Those people are starving for banter.

This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones. Welcome in. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. How about it?
Starting point is 00:02:56 We are now, what, less than 48 hours away from Christmas, and we're less than three hours away from tip off between Kentucky M. Bellerman on this edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Lemon and Jack Pilgrim here for you this morning. As always, Kentucky Sports Radio, sponsored by the T.J. Smith-Lawas, called T.J. He'll make them pay. We've got the Clark's Publishout phone number 859-280-287. Jack, kind of kind of abbreviated schedule today. We're going to have KSR from 10 to 10.30.
Starting point is 00:03:23 But then at 1030, we have to start the pregame show because Kentucky and Bellarmint tip off at 1 o'clock in the afternoon down here at Rupp Arena today. Weird, right? It is kind of weird. It's very weird. Before I left, Katie said the, my wife, Katie, said the traffic shouldn't be too bad. It's a Saturday. I said, it's Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:03:43 But I think just the scheduling of this is just throwing everybody off. It's a very, very weird time. But hey, I'm for it. Nothing like a matinee. These games that are, we'll get into a lot of the basketball game itself during the pregame show, but these games at Rupp Arena before Christmas usually has a really good crowd because the people come in for the holidays. Maybe mom and dad gives somebody, gives their family the tickets. it's usually a pretty decent crowd, even though it's 1 o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Yeah, and I think the local factor with Bellarmine, it's a name brand for us locals where some alums can come in and celebrate and cheer on their former school. So, yeah, I'm excited. I think it's going to be, and I think there's a lot to be excited about with how they won against St. John to get the debut of Jaden Quaintons. There's a lot of other stuff that went into just kind of the feel-good, bringing the feel-good vibes back to Kentucky. basketball. So our 30-minute edition of KSR, we're kind of like the pre-game show. You and I'll do it. Matt is course down in New Orleans, getting ready to call his first ever play-by-play on national radio of a college football ball game down in New Orleans today. I am very excited to see how that goes for him. I've loved hearing, you know, being on the plane and doing whispering the play-by-play under his breath, watching NFL games and stuff. But yeah, he's going to crush it. But I don't know how I would react. I were in his shoes, so I wish I was nothing but the best.
Starting point is 00:05:06 I told him, I said, dude, once you get going, you'll settle in, and you'll get into a flow, and it'll be all right. But I can tell you, he's legit, a little nervous about it. The interesting thing is memorizing the rosters and how, you know, the team dynamics and all those things. Like, he's got some homework to do. Like, I hope he's brushed up, and he's studied up, and he's ready to go. So that'll be later today, the UK basketball games at one.
Starting point is 00:05:33 then we'll the pregame show will probably get over about five-ish, and then I think kickoff for his game is at 5.30, so it'll kind of bleed all in together. So it's a long day of listening to the radio all day today. But what else you're going to do, man? It's at Christmas. Are you ready for Christmas in two days? I am one of the most festive people that I know.
Starting point is 00:05:51 You have your Santa sweater on today? I very much enjoy it. I'm the dude that puts my Christmas decorations up on November 1st. As soon as we get post-Holline, I'm all in on Christmas. December just flew by, man. It just feels like we snapped our fingers and it's here. So I'm trying to figure out that's why I'm wearing what I'm wearing today. Just because I'm trying to force myself into just a dramatic,
Starting point is 00:06:16 exaggerated version of my festive self. Because I'm not feeling, it doesn't feel like it's 48 hours away. Less than 48 hours away. Now your little boys will be getting up going crazy at 6 a.m. in the morning because Santa came to the house. Man, that's a special time when you've got little ones at the house. This is the first. Christmas that Billy, my two-year-old, grasps it.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Understand. We walk around the neighborhood, and he sees all the, oh, there's Big Santa, there's the Nutcracker, there's the polar bear. Like, he is just obsessed with all of the decoration. So that's definitely added. When you get older, as a kid, it's the most magical thing in the world. And then once you get kind of, you know, 20s and 30s, it, you know, kind of lose some of that magic, and then the kids bring it right back.
Starting point is 00:06:58 So I have very much enjoyed just the magic behind it this year. And then there's people like me. that I have to go shopping after the postgame show because I still have stuff I have to buy. My parents are coming down this afternoon and I have not bought them anything. I've not been to Kroger. I've not bought groceries. I'm that guy waiting to the last minute. Billy R. Sports, I think, is the same way.
Starting point is 00:07:18 We're out tonight and tomorrow on Christmas Eve finishing up. I have a couple of things that I see, my wife just does such a great job with getting every cousin and aunt and uncle and grandpa and grandma like if she does all of the, immediate family for me. Like, she does it back in November. She's so prepared, but I still have to do my own personal. Some of those things that I, you know, I'm the procrastinator. She's definitely the early bird. So since we're going into basketball during the pregame show, I'll ask you some other
Starting point is 00:07:49 questions. Did you be able to watch the volleyball tournament on Sunday? Man, I did. It just sucked. You know, it just sucked. How they won on Thursday, it kind of felt like, okay, well, they got the ugly, you know, Got knocked the rust off. You know, the big moment was, it felt a little big on Thursday in that first one against Wisconsin,
Starting point is 00:08:09 but they overcame it. And, all right, and now you're taking on a team that you've already beaten, and you can feel good and hopefully bring a championship back to Lexington. And then just came out flat, self-inflicted errors over and over again. You felt, okay, well, we've just got the ugly first set behind us. That'll be fine. And it kind of felt like Texas A&M got the momentum and said, oh, well, this stuff is sweet. Like, we can not only beat them, but kind of dominant.
Starting point is 00:08:33 them and just never were able to respond and it's just it sucks it doesn't take away from the magic that was the season I watch more volleyball this season than I ever have it was it was so fun watching this team and rallying around these girls but I wish they got it across the finish line it's like after they they jumped out of that first lead in the first set and once Texas A&M caught them and then won that first set it's like they were never the same after that they just didn't recover like you said hitting serves out of bounds hitting serves into the net returns easy returns hit hitting them out of bounds. It was just like they were thrown off a little bit, it seemed like. Momentum is just so real in volleyball where it's just one point turns into three and turns into five. And once it just kind of get unravels, it's really hard to kind of put the toothpaste back in the back in the tube. So they've done a great job, 8 and 1 on the year up to that point in matches where you fall behind 1-0. So this is a kind of comeback cat team, but they just didn't have it. You know, sometimes you just got to give credit where it's due, Texas A&M, just steamroll the entire
Starting point is 00:09:33 higher field and you know sometimes it happens it's that was the team of destiny and unfortunately it wasn't wasn't Kentucky well it's like you said still a great season finish national runner up but texas an m they beat three number one seeds in a row they beat Nebraska pit and kentucky back to back to back they kind of earned it man after reverse sweeping louisville to kind of you're right start the run so you're right so you know it's like yukon and basketball that 20 you know 2011 sometimes just those teams they go on runs and you just have to tip your cap and say, hey, that sucks that we're not in your shoes, but, you know, what can you do? So we'll, like I said, we'll get into basketball after the break, but I want to talk a couple
Starting point is 00:10:13 of football questions. You kind of got your finger on the pulse with UK basketball right now. Have you been able to keep up with Will Stein's staff and who he's hiring and you're bringing the guys he's bringing in? Well, I mean, we've got to feed the stud somehow, right? That's true. We got to go bowling, man. We're not setting expectations.
Starting point is 00:10:29 You know, we're setting the expectations high. There's good vibes in Lexington with football again. So, yeah, I've been following it super closely. I'm very excited for the portal to open up next week and really kind of see him take this thing and run with it. Yeah. See, all right, got a couple of late steals in the high school recruiting class, but what can you do that late in the game?
Starting point is 00:10:50 You're hired the day before National Signing Day. Like, you can only do so much. Getting Darby to sign on the dotted line was big enough as is. but this is where he can really kind of show his game off a little bit as a recruiter and kind of a hey let's go build something special it reminds me i go back to when when stoop's first got hired and just kind of selling the dream like hey we don't have anything to work with right now but come believe in me and let's let's make something special and we saw what that turned into with stoop's and hopefully with the floor raised thanks to what stoop was able to do
Starting point is 00:11:22 will stein's able to not just get high three and low four stars to start his his tenure We'll be able to get Will Stein to bring in some four and five star dudes studs. So are you in the boat? You were kind of hoping Oregon would get beat to get Will Stein on campus? Are you in the boat? You want Oregon to succeed to make him look even better and then talk about UK every time they talk about the Oregon offense? Go ducks, baby. No, we are rooting for them all the way.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Who do they play? Texas Tech? I think so. I just thought I had it. I'll look it up. I'll look it up while you talk to him. Yeah, we did this exact same thing when Stoops got hired. I mean, Florida State was in the middle of their national championship push,
Starting point is 00:12:05 and we kind of saw, like, hey, our defensive coordinators coming from a national championship winning program, how fun is that? Like, I mean, that's some real tangible success that we can kind of hang on to to build off of. Yes, it would be nice to get a little head start on the portal, and he wouldn't be so distracted if he got knocked out. But we're talking long term, the momentum in general with the attention on the program. with Will Stein at the podium being able to say whatever he wants about Kentucky. And, hey, you see what we just put up 50 points and 500 yards?
Starting point is 00:12:36 You want to come do that for me next year? Come do it in Lexington. I will take the long-term success, even if it means some short-term hiccups with juggling the portal with it. I'm with you. I'm the same way. They do play Texas Tech, by the way, this weekend. And I think that's why his staff was still important have guys here with boots on the ground in Lexington working on that kind of thing while he's got to fly back and forth between here in Oregon.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Yeah, and you got Joe Sloan, he's ready to go. We got Texas A&A, you have guys with boots on the ground here now, Anwar Stewart, you know, offering guys yesterday announced that he was coming back yesterday as well. So you can feel confident in the foundation with the guys to kind of relay the message to the people that need the message relayed to them while Will Stein takes care of business up in Eugene. You mentioned Anwar Stewart, former player, been on the Stoop staff, he's retaining him, he's retaining Mike Hartline, and I think that's good because he had... Believe Mike Hartline just took good job at USF.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I thought he was staying. I think he just left. Well, that takes away what I was getting ready to say. Never mind them. So when we come back from the break, though, I want to ask you what is Will Stein, what's on his Christmas list? What he's asking Santa for Christmas? Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Still looking for last-minute gifts? Yes. We'll make your loved ones feel great. Cornbread hemp has got you covered right now. Say $40 on orders over $120. Say $40 on orders over $120, I guess, what they're trying to say, with code K-Y-Cheer. That's code K-Y-Cheer.

Starting point is 00:14:28 And again, that code right now for the Christmas holiday is KY Cheer. All right, we'll take our break. Come back. We've got one more segment of KSR. Then we'll start the KSR pregame show. Kentucky and Bellarmine coming up. This is Ryan and Jack. We'll be right back.

Starting point is 00:15:58 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth

Starting point is 00:16:40 He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across.
Starting point is 00:17:02 When Jacob met Levant, this went to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody? coming after me. Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Life throws hurdles big and small. The question is, how do you conquer them? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going. from the WMBA standout Kate Martin
Starting point is 00:17:53 and rising hockey star Layla Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. Like, I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain. It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs, Gabby Thomas, and Katie Ladeki.
Starting point is 00:18:10 The ability to show a gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. at our level at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning.
Starting point is 00:18:30 It's about showing up, even when it's hard. Listen to Hurtle with Emily Abadi on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. I thought you were getting ready to say you were going to play Chuck Barry's Christmas song here, Gus. Thought you asked us what we wanted to hear. I'll play that one when we go to the break here. Oh, okay, gotcha. But this is an extra treat for you.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Oh, gotcha. All right. So Ryan and Jack Pilgham here, we are live at KS Bar and Grill. We are now open. We opened at 10 o'clock this morning. We're serving breakfast because Kentucky's playing Bellarmine at 1 o'clock. We opened a little hour early and it filled up. We've got a good crowd here already.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Like I said, a lot of these right before Christmas games get a lot of a different crowd. You know, you see some different faces. People kind of are in for the holidays, and we're seeing that already here as KS Bar is filling up. And the breakfast here is really good, by the way, so come on out. You know, Commonwealth Causes is creating a better Kentucky by shining a spotlight on local charities and inspiring generosity across the state. Happy holidays from Commonwealth Causes.
Starting point is 00:20:03 All right. You had a little minute to think about it. Will Stein's crawling up on Santa Claus's knee. Sandy asks what he wants for Christmas. What's Will Stein? What's on his Christmas list? Oh, well, if I were Will Stein, I'd say we got to get some studs. And I think the quarterback room is going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:20:20 I think there's so much to, he will have his pick of the litter for a quarterback, whether it's Cutter Bowley, whether it's somebody else that he wants to handpick. I think those questions are being had right now. Those conversations are being had right now. But you've got to have, whoever it is, have somebody to throw the ball to. And I think we saw the value of that this year, the lack thereof, not having kind of a go-to superstar in the outside for Cutter. I'm pushing all my chips on on the best receiver
Starting point is 00:20:50 Will Stein can get his hands on two or three I mean hit reset on that receiver room bring bring back the talent from last year the DJ Millers the you know Harley Gilmore's of the world and you know go find a true wide receiver number one you know they've lost every single offensive lineman now they had four seniors and with Farmer committing to the NFL going to the NFL they've lost all five of them
Starting point is 00:21:14 and they hardly played anybody in rotation at all. I mean, that's one thing that's got to be on his Christmas list. I think there's going to be a lot of presents under the tree. I think we need to understand that this is a total reset. Yeah, I was more selfishly talking about
Starting point is 00:21:32 the explosion of the Will Stein offense and getting carried away in that regard that I just personally want to see selfishly want to see a superstar wide receiver. But resetting the offensive line room is is make or break for year one for Willstein.
Starting point is 00:21:48 So that needed to be like the, like, pre-Christmas, like that was Thanksgiving. Like, we got to set the foundation there. And then Christmas is kind of, you know, where you can get a little selfish there. So, yeah, I think those are priorities, A, B, C, D, through Z. What is on Mitch Barnhart's Christmas list? Probably for me to shut up, probably, if I had to guess, just, you know, I don't know. I think that's...
Starting point is 00:22:16 I think he definitely wants a winning season for football. Definitely. Or at least some success in the football. This is his hire. Will Stein's maybe his legacy hire. And I think a turnaround to get... Because also the Mark Pope hire was his legacy hire as well. He needs this thing to turn around and continue to build upon what we've seen work over the last two weeks for this Kentucky basketball team as well.
Starting point is 00:22:41 We kind of heard him... unfiltered a little bit on the show that the last one I was on pre-Indiana where he talked about just kind of the you know hey you know the money is where it needs to be we like the foundation with JMI and you know the deals that we're able to secure but it's up to the coaches to build rosters that are going to compete it wasn't a shot at Pope but it was like a hey we're holding up our end of the bargain Pope now it's on you to make sure that the the $22 million roster you put together is a championship quality one so I think seeing I bet Mitch Barnhart was just as excited as anybody to see you. the Jaden Quaenz's debut to see that vision maybe come together a little bit more clearly. You know, it seems like the attitude of Big Blue Nation definitely has changed after beating Indiana and beating St. John's. Because it was about as low as it's been in a long time after that Gonzaga loss. And you were there, you witnessed it. Crowd was into it, electric, loud, and they just got waxed. And that's, there are two extremes with this, because that product was totally inexcusable, totally unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:23:42 that was a losing brand of basketball. I don't care who was in, who was out, who was hurt, who was available. I don't care. That effort, the passion, the want to, all of those things. When you have DeMarcus cousins publicly tweeting, these guys don't have. I know what Hart looks like playing for the University of Kentucky. These guys don't have it. When you're publicly called out by a legend like that,
Starting point is 00:24:03 and you have Mark Pope at the podium saying, hey, I'm a former player too, and I'd be mad at the coach right now as well. So when you hit rock bottom in that way, not just the score, but the how they got there compared to what has made these last two games so enjoyable with the passion and the diving for loose balls and crashing the offensive glass and just playing hard, tough basketball, they're easy to root for again. So, you know, got to meet in the middle somewhere. It's probably not sustainable to play this style of basketball. You've got to make shots eventually, but you also just can't play a losing brand the way that we saw leading up to. this little stretch. And you're the guy that asked the question. The DeMarcus Cousins quote, you're the one that asked that. Cudos to you, by the way. Well, it's the idea that that generation of
Starting point is 00:24:55 player was known as the, oh, these guys don't care about the school. They only care about being here for eight months and making, you know, nowadays it's being here for eight months and making as much money as you can win NIL before going to the draft. But for their generation of kids, it was, I'm using this program as a stepping stool to get to the NBA. And the old generation of Kentucky fans viewed that as like, oh, that's not real. You know, they don't care about the name on the front. They only care about the name on their back. That guy is saying that these guys didn't care for his program, you know?
Starting point is 00:25:26 It was kind of ironic and kind of a full circle moment that I think that was pretty revealing. That was pretty telling when a guy like DeMarcus Cousins, a fan favorite in the one-and-done era is saying that these guys don't have heart. Draft King's big sponsor of Kentucky Sports Radio as well, and I'm going to go over some Draft King's odds today. You tell me what you think. Kentucky over Bellarmine is a 35 and a half point favorite. Hammer it, baby. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Hammer it. Feel good about this one. We'll get into it more, but is Jalen Lowe play today? He did not practice yesterday, and there's no shoot around today. So I'm just my educated guess here is that they will correctly make the decision to hold him out. I would wrap him in bubble wrap and shove him away. keep him away from the basketball floor of practice. Do not
Starting point is 00:26:11 let him get touch for the next 14 days. Just leave him be. We saw plenty in the second half against St. John's. Keep him healthy is priority number one from our Pope. Why not? Like you said, there's a big drought now before they play Alabama again. You know, they play on what, January 3rd?
Starting point is 00:26:27 14-day gap between St. John's and Alabama. Why not? Why not just sit him right now against Bellarmine and let that shoulder heal up? Because it's going to get bumped again once the SEC starts. This is touch and go. You're going to have to delicately,
Starting point is 00:26:44 delicately handle Jalen Lowe the rest of the season. Pope said last night, and his call-in show, that he does expect Jalen to be available the rest of the season. He doesn't think that this is something that's going to linger and that's going to take him off the floor at some point. He thinks that they can manage this, which I'm all in on. But you've got to be able to manage it.
Starting point is 00:27:03 You've got to be able to pick and choose the ad, needed spots with Jalen Lowe. You can't just throw them out there and say hey 35 minutes a game buddy go go let her rip like pick and choose your spots when to use this very very valuable tool for your team so you say hammer the over at 35 and a half draft king yep the over under is 156 and a half ooh I'm going I think Kentucky will score a lot of points will Bellarmine score enough points to get over the over well and I don't want to share my secrets for the pregame show but I'm picking a big big win that does involve
Starting point is 00:27:37 Kentucky scoring enough points to make however many Bellarmine scores not matter as much. So I'm still slamming the over on that one. That Kentucky may hit 100. Will Bellarmine get 50? 55. There's your question. There's your question right there. So yeah, we'll get more into that.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Again, we're open here at KS Bar and Grill. Nice crowd. Kind of people coming in. I am getting salivating, looking at some of these plates that are coming out with the eggs and bacon and biscuits. It's looking pretty darned tasty. The breakfast is actually very, very good here. at KS Bar. It's kind of rare. We don't do it all the time.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Sometimes we have an early football game. Monique will open up a little early days of breakfast. So we're doing it here. A lot of new faces here. That's what's kind of cool about these holiday games. I'm enjoying seeing some of the morning beers as well. We've got to get some excitement at Rupp Arena for a 1 o'clock Tuesday game. So that does it for this edition of KSR 30 minutes. Gone. But stay tuned.
