Law, this you call T.J. I'll make them pay. A rare day where everybody's in Louisville.
Ryan drove up here. Shannon is always here and I'm here today and we don't often end up in this studio in Louisville.
Got to see our guy, Perrin Johnson, who's now sales guy for A-Heart. As I think I said when he got hired, didn't tell me.
I had no idea. I tell you. One of my really good friends,
in here one day, Shannon, and he's just here.
And I'm like, what are you doing here?
Yeah.
I work here.
Were you going to tell me?
I thought you were teaching chemistry at Fern Creek.
That's the last I'd heard he was teaching class.
I thought he was selling bug spray.
Oh, dude, he's had every job.
He's sold bug spray.
He's been a chemistry teacher.
He sold COVID test at one point.
Yeah.
Wow.
And now he's selling ads here at IHeart.
So it's nice to have him part of the team.
I had no idea.
I said, when did you start?
He goes, November.
Well, how do we not know this?
You know, he's making an announcement.
It is crazy that, like, two people I consider really good friends are so close to Louisville with Vince now.
Yeah.
And parent.
Uh-huh.
Like, how does that happen?
Because we don't like Louis.
And the mayor of Louisville, Shannon.
That's true.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's a big Louisville fan.
I think I have more friends at the Louisville side now than the Kentucky would.
You're going to throw the L's up?
No.
L's down.
You know, they play Duke tonight right here.
That's right.
Just down the road.
Yeah, it's in town.
Who are you for?
That's a game I'm probably going to have to root for Duke.
Yeah.
Duke.
I mean, we played Louisville, though.
It's better for our strength of schedule if Louisville wins.
And they need all the help they can get on that right now.
Well, you know, because they're best players out and people aren't sure when he's going to play.
I don't know what the –
Mikel Brown is he's?
Sounds like your L's up then if you're going –
You're going on the Lowe's up.
I'm like L's to the side.
Okay.
But I mean, I saw –
billboard as I was driving down Bartstown Road last night. Actually, I walked. Think about this,
Shan. I walked from my house to El Nepal out there next to the Waterson and back last night.
Wow. That's a hike. That's right. I'm getting your exercise.
2026 getting in shape. Out of boy. But on the walk back, I saw a billboard that said,
come to the Duke game. Which says to me, Shannon, they don't think they're going to sell out that Duke
game if they're having Billboard saying come to the Duke game. Yeah, I mean, if you got to ask people to come to
the Duke game. I mean, there would have been a time you would not have had to ask to come to the Duke game.
You're really, really good, and it's here in your home court and you got Duke coming in.
Come to the Duke game, getting a billboard. Wow.
It was kind of surprising. There has been better, though, this year, right? Yeah, but I mean, they didn't sell out any game but us.
We're the only game they sold out. They used to not handing out flyers like it was last year.
I mean, that's better. At least they get a billboard. All right. So there's a lot to get to. I mean, the Mark Pope's show, I think we could do a whole show.
show on, but I actually don't think it's the lead because I think the lead has to be football
because Kentucky got their new quarterback last night in a little bit of a surprise to people.
Kenny Minchie from Notre Dame is going to be the new quarterback at Kentucky.
He was committed, I mean, this is the new world we live in.
He entered the portal 48 hours ago, 24 hours ago committed to Nebraska.
and then last night flipped to us,
making Nebraska fans livid.
I mean, livid.
So let's first talk about who he is.
All right, because Sam Levitt is going to end up not here.
There are reports that he might decide today for LSU.
There are also reports he might visit Miami.
At this point, who cares?
He's not coming here.
McKinney Minchie was the backup at Notre Dame.
He was in a quarterback competition at the beginning
of the year with the guy who got picked, who I think it was C.J. Carr.
And the coach decided on like the last day of practice to pick Carr said it was the
hardest decision he'd ever made in his coaching career. Menci will have two years of eligibility.
He is the number 10 ranked quarterback in the portal. Just to give you a basis of comparison,
the number 12 ranked quarterback in the portal was Cudder Bowley.
Okay. So that's what you're talking about.
Yeah.
he is ranked 10th in the portal.
He is ranked second amongst the quarterbacks who did not start for their team this year.
Okay, so the other guys,
for all starters.
And I talked to somebody last night about how they do these portal rankings,
and they said it's really hard for guys who haven't played.
But this dude, I guess I don't remember who was ahead.
But this dude, they thought had the most potential of the people that hadn't played.
My view about it is, and I talked about this on K.
board. Levitt. So the coaching staff felt like this. The coaching staff felt like Levitt was their
top choice. He was the number one guy in the portal. They wanted him. But Levitt's brothers are
running his recruitment. And Levitt's brothers said, hey, we're not ready to decide yet. And Kentucky
says, okay, when are you going to decide? We can give you until tomorrow, which was today.
and they said, well, it could be tomorrow, but it could be end of the week.
Because we might still go visit Miami.
And UK felt like we just can't wait that long.
I think the UK coaching staff felt like there were about 10 guys that were really good in this class.
They were in on three of the 10.
Leavitt was their top choice.
Menchie was their second.
But they didn't want to risk getting neither because they felt like there was a big drop-off after
those 10. And Shannon, you might
understand that because they had the guy
at number 12 and let him walk. Exactly.
So they clearly think there's a big drop
off after the top
10 because they were willing to let number 12 walk.
So
I can understand in that
scenario, Shannon,
why you would say, if there's a big
drop off and you're not going to tell us
we just have to go ahead and take this guy.
Makes sense to me. I mean, some of these
guys, I look at like at four stars, five
stars, and you have to sometimes take
it with a grain of salt. But I mean, looking at what this guy has been able to do so far,
I mean, I think that he's going to be a good fit. And I think that Will Stein is a guy who can
develop him. And I think ultimately you have to trust Will Stein. He put Bo Nix in the NFL,
Dylan Gabriel in the NFL, and now Dante Moore will play in the NFL. His last three quarterbacks
have played in the NFL. He clearly knows what it takes to put a dude in the NFL.
Ryan, I think you have to say, if he thinks this is the guy, then who am I to say he's not?
Exactly. I can't pretend like I know anything about Kenny Minchie other than what you wrote and Luckett wrote last night, but you totally trust.
Stein's a quarterback whisperer. You think these top-level quarterbacks, they want to play for him to help get them ready for the NFL.
So if that's a situation where he was almost the starting quarterback at Notre Dame.
Who's pretty good. He's really good. He's really good. He's Will Stein's pick. I totally am happy with it.
And the guy who beat him out is projected to after next year be an NFL quarterback.
So, you know.
I think you got to be happy with it, don't you?
Now, there were people, yes, I do.
I mean, I'm not going to claim.
I don't know anything.
I didn't know there was a Kenny Minchin until yesterday.
So I'm not going to sit here and be like, you know what, he's got a great arm.
He can really sling it.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I talked to two different people last night, one who is a reporter and one who's just a fan of
Notre Dame, both of whom said, you all are going to love it.
Great.
Like, talent, you know, nearly became.
the starter here, you're going to love it.
I hope they're right.
Yes.
Now, I think the reactions online last night, Shannon, told me, I think you could see people's
reaction online.
Are you an optimist or are you a pessimist?
Because your reaction online last night was basically determining that.
If you're an optimist, you go, Will Stein's been a quarterback whisper, last three in the
NFL, let's go.
Trust him.
If you're a pessimist, you go,
that's what they told us about Brock Vandergriff, too.
And he wasn't no good.
But different coaching staff, though.
Exactly.
I think there's a big difference.
And by the way, I'll also note, if you want to do the,
well, that's what they told us about Brock,
Gantam, Fandingriff, right before him was a guy named Will Levis who had never played.
That's true.
He was a backup.
He was a backup.
Yep.
So when we take guys who haven't played, we're one in one.
Will Levis was successful.
Brock Vannegriff was not.
And I also like when people say they, Shannon,
because they're like,
that's what they said.
But it's a different they.
Who's they?
It's a different they.
I've told the story before,
but when my mom was prosecutor,
do you remember that?
Oh, yeah.
My mom was prosecutor,
and somebody got killed in Bell County.
And my grandmother said to my mom,
I don't think they're going to do.
anything about the guy who killed so-and-so.
That's not really how my grandmother sounds, but I'm going to do.
You're a rough grandma.
I don't think that's how they're going to do anything.
Okay.
And my mom looked at it and said,
Mother, who do you think they is?
It's me.
Well, there's a little bit of that.
That's what they told us.
Well, it's a different coaching staff now.
So many people, they got a, you know,
They're from Missouri.
You got to prove it to me.
This guy's not...
What?
Show me.
Not prove it.
Show me state.
Show me state.
Not prove it.
Sorry, if somebody from Missouri, you got to prove it.
You mean show me.
Show me.
Okay.
There you go.
I think they had to see it for themselves.
He was close.
He was close.
He knew that it was a state where you had something that, you know.
Prove or show.
He knew it was either prove or show.
He knew it was something.
So the prove it state, Missouri,
Go ahead.
Hell, I don't know what I was getting ready to say.
You were going to have to prove it.
Like, you got to, I got to see it.
I got to see it.
Yeah, okay.
Has it played a lot yet?
Has it proved it yet?
Because he's not from Missouri.
What?
I said, you know, I said prove it again.
All right, well, it will just let you go on that.
So they get this kid.
Now, the second part of it I thought was interesting.
So I talked to a source around the program, a very good source.
Uh-huh.
And I sort of, this was the first time I'd gotten to ask him,
what is your all's like philosophy around the port?
This is exactly what they said,
and I want to see if you agree with this philosophy.
They said, look, we have a budget of X amount of money.
The key to college football now is figuring out how to use it.
Right?
Right.
The NCAA allows us to spend this amount of money.
And then there's obviously an aisle that you could conceivably get on the side.
The philosophy we have is there's only a handful of guys,
the studs from his press company.
Feed the studs.
That are worth a lot of money.
Okay.
And we are going to spend our money on those guys.
And everybody else, if they're bleeding us for money, we'll say, sorry.
Because there's 10 guys that are, if they're not quite as good as you, are really close,
and we'll use them because we think our money is best invested on having a handful of studs.
Uh-huh.
Do you agree with that philosophy?
I like it.
You've got your center, you got your quarterback,
so now you're going to feed the stud, get you a running back, get you some receivers.
So in this class, these are the quote-unquote studs so far.
The quarterback, the center they got from Baylor,
who, by the way, is the number one ranked interior lineman in America in the portal.
So that's big.
So they got him.
I think they want to get the wide receiver from Texas, more.
He'd be one.
Yes.
I think they are probably looking at Ty Bryant.
who they had to get to stay.
We recruit as one.
Yeah.
And then maybe two or three more.
And those are your studs.
And then you build around them by the people that are willing to work at the price you would do.
Do you like that philosophy?
I love the philosophy.
You know, bring in your guys, you know, it can be your playmakers.
Rather than paying lots of money for 17 or 18 guys.
Yeah.
And then you just get whatever's left.
Uh-huh.
which has kind of been the philosophy in years.
They're basically saying, that's exactly right.
They're basically saying we're investing heavily in six or seven guys.
Studs.
Studs.
And then we'll give good money to another 20,
but we ain't getting in a bidding war for the rest of them.
And that may mean letting some good players walk,
but we need the studs.
Is the defensive linemen they got from LSU?
Is he in your stud category?
I don't think they would be in that category.
I think he would be a,
got a good price on a good guy.
Good. I mean, because I was impressed. I got him. He's a freshman starter in the SEC
at LSU on the defensive line. But they didn't play as much this year.
Didn't play as much as past year? Why don't do you think they went all in on Sam Levitt then?
Because I think they got this guy for half the money and they don't think he's half the player.
And he also, I think himself may have wanted to go to LSU.
I like that philosophy, though. I mean, you know, you're going to be going up against
studs every Saturday in the SEC. So you need, you know, your main guy is to be the best that you can find.
So I would rather do that than spread it out amongst 20 other players.
Because I do think Stoops' philosophy was, I'm going to give 20 guys really good money,
and then let's just, we'll get whoever else we can get.
They're saying we'll give elite money to seven guys, good money to another 25,
and then the rest of the people will, and I think that it makes sense to me.
Now, that means those guys got to be good.
True.
They can't be bus.
But I think that philosophy makes sense because Kentucky,
they got the number one interior offensive linemen in the country
because they focused in on him.
And that's probably the way to do.
And now that you've got your quarterback,
you can go get a stud receiver.
The Texas guy, I think, is what they're hoping.
Yeah, they want to see who's my quarterback going to be before I commit.
And then you get a stud receiver.
And then they're keeping a couple of those young guys that played well last year.
Harley Gilmore.
DJ Miller and Hardley, Hardley,
Gilmore.
Yeah.
So 859-2802287.

Welcome back, Tucky Sports Radio.
Is this why Tennessee stud?
Because he's a stud and he's from Tennessee.
Oh, is he from Tennessee?
I didn't know that.
National area, I think.
Okay, see, I didn't know he's from Tennessee.
There we go.
Sorry, my...
It's all right.
I mean, my headset's not working with.
There we go.
There we go.
All right, so he's from Tennessee.
Good to see.
This is, this on the text machine, the example, what I'm talking about.
One person writes, Matt, Minchie sounds like Brock Van derogryf.
I can't get excited.
Well, why can't you say he sounds like Will Levis?
Like, why do you pick Brock Van derogryff?
Listen, I'm not saying he's not...
I'm not saying he's going to be good.
I have no idea.
But what is it about your mind that goes to Brock Van deGryff instead of Will Levis?
Like, it's you, if you think that way, you have a tendency to just think to the negative.
Because Will Levis was an NFL quarterback that came here.
Same situation.
Penn State, lost a battle, didn't get to play, came here and was good.
Yep.
Now, Brock Grand of the Griff, same thing.
Came here, didn't work out.
But neither of those things don't have anything to do with what Will Stein does.
Nope.
So when your brain initially says, in my mind he's brought Vandigriff,
you're also almost helping me look into your soul, Shannon.
Right.
And say, I initially look for the negative.
Glass is half empty.
Yes.
It's a person that you are.
Vandergriff was a disappointment, but he was hurt.
He got hurt, you know, and he didn't have a good backup.
The other thing I would say, so like there was a, I saw on a Facebook, people, I don't, people send me
threads where people on Facebook are debating me. And Shannon, I know not to look at that.
They're debating you. Like literally, someone wrote me and goes, you should read this. They're
debating you. And I thought, no, I shouldn't. It's bedtime. But you did anyway. But I did.
Uh-oh. And, you know, usually it's like two different conversations. There's one of,
he's a liberal.
Stinky liberal.
Stinky liberal.
Joe Biden.
Kamala Harris.
Maga.
Okay.
So those people,
you're not going to win those people.
But then there's a second group that will say something like,
well, there's also a third group.
There's a second group that's like,
well, he's too arrogant.
He talks too much.
Well, it's a radio show.
What do you want for me?
With dead air?
I mean, you want me to just sit here and go,
well, that's KSR.
Like, I mean, I have to say something.
Yeah.
But then the third group will say,
They're sunshine pumpers.
They get everybody worked up.
Well, here's my question.
If we don't know this kid,
wouldn't it be better to spend these next six months
getting excited about him than to sit here and say and he stinks?
Absolutely.
Like, what good does that do?
Spend the next seven or eight months going, well, he sucks.
We don't even know.
None of us, no.
Not one person listening to this show knows if he's good.
Nope.
Not one person, unless you are Mr. and Mrs. Minchie,
and even then you're probably biased because it's your kid.
Yeah.
Now, you know, now I do like the Nebraska part.
I like making Nebraska mad.
I do.
Shannon, Nebraska fans, you want to talk about people living in a different generation.
Oh, yeah.
Right?
Yeah.
They're the people still hoping that rotary phones are coming back.
They're one step above Kansas for me.
Yes.
Well, that's just in the overall state.
Yes.
But they're people too, though.
But Will Compton.
Yeah.
nothing against Will Compton.
Don't even 100% know who he is.
I know he's on Bussing with the boys,
which is like two guys, him and Taylor Scherzer.
Yeah, a big tall guy, right?
Is it Scherzer or is it Lewin?
It's not even close to each other.
I know it's Max Scherzer.
Yeah, it's a pitcher.
Anyway, point being, I think they were former offensive lineman.
Is that right?
They used to be with Barstall.
That's how I knew were there.
And then I think they went and did something else.
I don't know those guys.
They may be wonderful dude, so this is not.
But Will Compton's like a Nebraska grad.
Yeah, he played it Nebraska.
And he gets online and he's like, he's yelling about this kid.
You blanked Nebraska.
You had a deal and just whines.
And I got nothing against Will Compton.
I don't know him.
He might be the best dude in the world.
But Shannon, I kind of loved listening to him wine.
Oh, yeah.
So I retweeted it because it shows called Bussing with the Boys.
And I retweeted and said,
Coping with Blumpton.
the boys. Which I have to say I was proud of them. Yeah, that was a good one.
It sounds like I don't like the guy. I don't know the guy, right? But I just like when
Nebraska, because you know, they took, they took Wondell at a high school. Yeah. And then we got
him back. Right. And then we took Dahl Dell. Yeah. But then they took Dane Key.
That's true. Yeah. So I like taking their guy because Nebraska thinks they're Nebraska, but they're
not Nebraska. If you're Nebraska, you don't lose a guy to Kentucky. Right.
I don't know where this rivalry started with Nebraska and us.
It was one deal.
I guess the first guy we had our recruiting battle with him.
And then there's the volleyball thing.
The volleyball thing.
We hate Nebraska.
Yeah.
And they have so much corn.
And I'm not a fan.
The other thing is I would say to Will Compton, again, no offense, man.
Get your money.
But you used to work for Barstool.
And then the gambling company offered you more money.
And guess what he did, Shannon?
He left Barstool and went to the gambling company.
You followed the money.
He followed the money.
The money.
And when he was asked about it, I remember they said something like, well, I mean, we love the Barstool people, but it was just such a good opportunity.
You would have to follow the money to want to live in Nebraska.
I mean, you couldn't pay me enough to want to go to Nebraska.
But, like, if you're going to be the guy that follows the money, how can you get mad at this kid for falling the money?
Like, you know, it is what it is.
The one Nebraska game I went to this year to watch Dane, he was there.
And when he went on the field, the place went nuts.
Like the student body went nuts.
They loved the guy.
He's very popular amongst younger people and good.
I mean, I got good for Will Compton.
But, like, yelling about this kid, I thought that was kind of low budget.
Like, that's why you're whining.
What do you call him, spine list or something?
Yeah, I mean, you know, he'd only been committed to him for a day.
It's not like his heart was there.
That's true.
I don't think, I think I read he'd never even visited.
Said what, Kentucky gave him a blank check.
Yeah, so?
And what's your point?
Exactly.
I mean, like, it's not like in the 24 hours he was committed he had like started a farm and was growing corn out there.
Like he had no love for Nebraska.
So now he's coming to Kentucky.
Things happen.
I hope we can get them in a bowl game next year.
That'd be awesome.
Plus, they're undefeated in basketball.
They are.
They're calling it Nebraska ball.
What?
You don't like that?
I don't like that at all.
Nebraska ball.
The coach, I think, after the game the other day,
looked at the crowd and said,
Who's your daddy?
Wow.
I'm just saying.
We'll be right back.
T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney.
Call T.J. He'll make them pay.
Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio
presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Matt Jones.
Is this Springsteen?
It is.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because he has an album named Nebraska, right?
I think so.
I think the movie about him that just came out is about the making of the movie
or of the album Nebraska.
Oh, it is.
I think so.
This song has the same vibe that you get when you drive into Nebraska.
As soon as you cross the state line, you just want to take a nap.
I agree.
There's a great movie called Nebraska.
Oh, I love that movie.
It's a great movie.
It's Will Forte.
And it's about his grandfather thinks he won the publisher's clearinghouse sweepstakes.
I love that movie.
In Omaha, and he can't convince his granddaddy doesn't win, so he just takes him to Omaha.
Really?
That's the best thing about Nebraska is that movie.
It is, to cash in, and the movie's all in black and why.
Really?
It's a really good movie.
It really is.
I think the older guy got nominated for an Oscar for it.
That's a really good movie.
Bruce Dern.
That's exactly right.
That's who it is.
Yeah, that's a really good movie.
859-2802287.
All right, I got a couple people on.
I want to talk to Mark Pope, but let's just, they've been waiting.
So Dennis, go ahead, Dennis.
Quick comment on Nebraska.
Not really what I call about.
I call about football.
in the volleyball tournament, I remember after one game, their fans are on Twitter talking about,
oh, it's talking about the beer ship and that.
Oh, it's the Nebraska effect.
And then after the Kentucky-Wisconsin match, they got a big high rating.
So they're volleyball fans just kind of get on my nerves.
They really do.
Their volleyball fans are very arrogant.
But go ahead.
Very arrogant.
They think they invented the game at the sport.
On the football, you say, you say,
DeAnd you think DeAndre Moore is one of the
Studs.
What about Malcolm?
What about Malcolm Sidd and then
C.J. Baxter, is he the stud running back at one?
I think they want C.J. Baxter, but there's a couple other schools going for him.
I think they feel very confident about DeAndre Moore.
Baxter maybe he feel 50-50 or something, so I'm not sure.
And as far as the other receivers, I'm sure there are many great receivers.
I just think that Moore is the one they feel like they got the best shot with.
All right, and do you consider the left tackle, the right tackle also stuff players that they want?
Yes, the kid from, is he from LSU?
Is that right?
The one that's visiting.
Whatever that guy, Nick Rouse reported, I can't remember what school it was.
It was 340 pounds or something.
It was LSU.
I think it was LSU.
Yeah, that's one of them, too.
I appreciate to call.
I can't remember what his name is.
By the way, I also heard a little bit about who we were paying last year.
I'm not like, because I don't know officially, I'm not going to say,
but I can't believe some of the money we were paying to people last year and who we were paying it to.
We had five guys on the team last year, three of which, two of which barely played,
three of which didn't start.
Yeah.
That are making, we're making more money than all but one person will make this year.
That poor budgeting.
They did not budget well.
No, they didn't.
Trevor, go ahead, Trevor.
All right, let's get to something else.
859-280-2287 coupon on.
Let's talk about the Mark Pope show last night.
Good way to start.
Okay, so listen, I read that Facebook thing, and they're like,
oh, he's already running off Mark Pope.
I'm not running off Mark Pope.
I like Mark Pope.
I still think he can work here.
I got, I am not.
I am not anything but wanting Mark Pope to succeed.
And there's almost nothing that could happen the rest of the year
that would not say to me,
Mark Pope should be back next year.
So I just want to give that caveat,
since everybody seems to forget that.
With that said,
I think you are doing a dereliction in duty
if you don't mention things as they happen and go,
whoa, this is weird.
Is that not fair?
Very fair.
I don't understand what that press conference was last night.
Or the coaches show.
Mark needs.
to get away from Shannon speaking like Tony Robbins.
Yeah.
Like he is literally just saying gobbledy gook.
A lot of words without saying anything.
I honestly feel like I'm listening to like a motivational speaker.
Yeah.
And you're a basketball coach.
I'm going to read you this quote.
And this is from the show last night.
Now this is someone wrote this quote.
So this is not, this might be a word or two wrong.
But this is, uh, Wyatt Huff wrote that this is what Mark Pope said.
This is what he said.
And I want you to try to understand what these words mean.
What's really important for us as coaches and as teammates is understanding the story that each
of our guys and each member of our staff is telling themselves about what we're going
through right now and then bringing it back to two things.
One is a point of truth and two, a point of common understanding about what you're experiencing
where the shortcoming is, where the pitfalls are.
There was actually a theme of our film today.
What does that even mean?
I mean, seriously, that's 15 seconds of words that I don't even know what to.
What does that mean?
A point of truth?
And me...
The question was, why didn't we play well?
Yeah.
Me, the theme of film session, but it should have been,
why can't we give up?
Why do we give up something open three pointers?
That's what I want to know the theme of the film session, not about writing you're re-looking at your story and rewriting your story.
I don't understand.
Credit to Tom Leach, who I thought asked him some good questions, but he doesn't really answer them.
And then we bring on Travis Ford for 30 minutes.
Who wants to hear that?
I love Travis Ford, but last night was not the time to bring him on for 30 minutes.
But once they do that, that's always when you know things aren't going well.
Yeah.
Right?
When you start going, okay, let's bring on the former player.
He needs a PR team.
He needs someone there to go, what are you doing?
What are you talking about?
He said that Jalen Lowe would start at some point, but him not starting is part of bringing him back and getting him ready.
What does that mean, Shannon?
How does him starting playing three or four minutes later in a game change his rehab?
I'm still trying to figure out his quote, which I've read ten times and still understand.
a point of truth and a point of common understanding.
What does that mean?
Come back to your story.
You know, here's what that sounds like.
In my life, I've had to go.
Okay, so from a, like, what I believe in standpoint, I lean left.
But from how I want to run meetings and life, I lean right.
Shannon, not everybody needs to talk.
That's true.
Not everybody needs to tell their truth.
That's a big thing liberals like to say.
We should all get to say our truth.
Some people's truth, Shannon, need to just stay in their heads.
Yep.
That's good sometimes.
Everybody doesn't need to speak.
Better off not talking sometimes.
So I've been to a lot of meetings over the years, especially when I was thinking about
running for Senate, where everybody had to speak.
And they would spend three or four minutes saying nothing.
And it would drive me crazy.
Usually listen to somebody dressed like a hippie go.
really what we need is passionate human understanding of the soul.
And I'm like, the question was whether or not we want coal.
That's what that sounds like.
It is.
It sounds like you're going to like a peace love guru meeting.
We're talking about basketball.
This is the UK basketball coaches show.
Seriously.
And although purpose is relating to your fan base, I think.
And our fan base does not relate to that.
Exactly.
you know why is he doing that i don't know who's telling him to talk like that i think his if you would
think his personality off the court reflects more of that side of is it just that when he got hired
and he was doing that it's beautiful and it's all that i remember drew said it once like
we're okay with this now because we're winning but when we start losing this stuff is going to sound
gets old quick i think that's what it is yeah i think when you go everything's beautiful
and it's an understanding.
When you're winning, you're like, oh, he's quirky.
But when you're losing, you're like,
dude, I just asked you why Jalen Lowe wasn't starting.
I've not heard one good reason why he's not playing his best lineup.
You said that one lineup yesterday played one minute together.
Yeah.
That's coaching malpractice.
His answer, when I asked why Cam Williams didn't play, was all over the place.
Yes.
I mean, it was all over the place.
Still don't understand that.
So, I don't know.
I felt like when this was over, I had joined a new age philosophy club.
That's kind of what it felt like.
And I wanted Shannon to be not in the club anymore.
Yeah.
I think it would have been better off to not even hear anything.
I kind of agree with you.
He needs someone to help him not talk like that.
Yeah.
Don't you agree?
Not just like that, but how he does postgame news conferences with Tom Leach after they lose.
He can't act that way either.
He's got to get it together.
So was he like this at the beginning and we just ignored it?
I don't remember him one time last year having that quarter reaction after a loss with Tom Leach.
No.
But do you remember him talking like a chef, you know, like he's taking us all into, you know.
He would go off on a tangent once in a while, but it seems to be more so now.
He's trying to, he's searching for answers.
That's probably what it is.
He just doesn't really know what to say.
And it's like that meme on the office where he just starts, he says like, I open my mouth and start talking and don't know where it's going to end.
There may be some truth to that.
That may be some truth to that.
Maybe.

Shane and I were talking during the break.
This is Even Flo by Pearl Jam.
There's a new wrestler in the independent circuit whose name is Stephen Flo.
And he comes out and he's re-sung the lyrics about him.
He goes, Stephen Flo.
Shannon, I actually think it's pretty good.
Yeah, good little gimmick right there.
Rocking the flannel.
Yeah, he kind of looks like Eddie Vedder back then.
He's dressed like him.
Steven Flo.
kind of catchy. Kind of catchy.
I think it's a smart idea.
Text machine, 772-774-5-254.
One person writes, Matt, I'm ashamed to say,
I know where those sayings come from from Mark Pope.
It's from an author's leadership book named Breen Brown.
And it's called The Story I'm Telling Myself.
Well, that's what he said.
That's a deep cut there, man.
Green Brown, B-R-E-N-E-Brown.
You have to look up Shannon and see if that's like a real thing.
I mean, I thought, why would you just make that up?
No, it is.
Another person writes, Matt, do you, I want you to read the phrase again that Pope said
and then imagine him saying it to DeMarcus Cousins.
All right, that's a good idea.
That's a good idea.
Let's act like this, this is Mark Pope is coaching to Marcus Couss.
Okay.
What's really important for us as coaches and teammates is understanding the story that each of you guys and each member of our staff is telling themselves about what we're going through right now and then bringing it back to two things.
One is our point of truth and our point of common understanding about what you're experiencing where the shortcoming is and where the pitfalls are.
Hello, Mr. President.
Hello, Mr. President.
I was thinking you were going to drop it there.
Can you imagine saying that to a group of college basketball players?
And DeMarcus says, shut up, coach.
Get out of the way and give me the ball.
I can't imagine going in a locker room, though, and saying that.
This ain't no spelling B.
Yeah.
While they're breaking down film, he says he's breaking down, rewriting their story.
Did you want me to cut left or right?
Well, do you think DeMarcus would even commit to Mark Pope?
No, I don't either.
I do wonder about how, I mean, it's clear there are players that really love Mark Pope,
but I do wonder, like, that's not going to work on everybody.
No, it's not.
You know, so I don't know.
Let's go to Cowboy.
What's up?
Hey, guys.
It's first time, long time.
Who up?
I got two questions.
First, I just want to preface to say, I think it was still the right move with Coach Pope at the right time.
But I don't want to discount what Coach Cow did, like the telethons, the Samaritan's feet, all of those little things that he would do to get the team together.
and bring the whole state in with the team and show them who they are and everything.
I think that's one thing that.
I think he's done a lot of that.
I mean, he took the team to London during the tornado.
I think, to be fair, he's done a lot of that stuff.
You may not have seen it.
It may not have been quite as big like the hoops for Haiti thing.
But he's, I don't think you can say he hasn't really tried to reach the team out to the state.
And they do bonding stuff all the time.
So I don't think that would be, I don't think he's done that poorly.
Okay.
Those are just things that I haven't seen, I guess, but they were obviously things that Coach Cow would.
Yeah, no, he's done that.
And I actually think Cal got away from that at the end.
I appreciate the call.
But certainly at the beginning, he did a lot of that.
I think Pope has too.
Dave, go ahead, Dave.
Hey, man, you know what?
Listen to that last night.
I thought, my God, we've hired Bill Walt.
I mean
He was just
The ramming and you guys touched on it
I mean
Can you imagine if that's the way
He tries to communicate with the players
I mean no wonder we've sucked
Well you have kids that age
Can you imagine Ryan saying that to like
Josiah and all of his friends
They would zone out and not pay
One lick of attention to what I'm saying
Not at all
You just zone out
You just like tune out
Yeah do you think that's what would happen sir
Oh I don't I have no doubt
It would happen if he said it to me, and I'm 61 years old.
But the thing about it is, you know, what has happened since last year?
I don't know.
I mean, he's like he's not even the same dude.
I mean, if you look at our schemes offensively, the way his manner is,
or the way he talks, the way he handles himself, it's like he's a different dude, man.
It's like he's been taken over by the ghost of Bill Walton.
But thanks for taking my coming up.
Appreciate the call.
I think I had a lot of people yesterday compare him to Bill Walton.
and I don't think that's exactly right
because Bill was more kind of like a pothead
but the like random just
you know this could go anywhere
Brene Brown my mom says is a woman
did you look up to see if that
is that a book she has it is an author
Barry on Brown
no no bring it's a different
he would have a different way of communicating
Samantha
go ahead Samantha
yeah
well
what I kind of saw with Pope,
I wonder if he just doesn't know how to handle
this team.
They're functioning more and morphed into like pro
instead of what college used to be.
And it's almost like,
I wonder if he came into it
thinking he was well coach a team like he was part of.
Well, maybe, but I appreciate the call.
But I mean, he's smart.
He had to know.
And he was coaching up until this point.
I know he was at BYU,
but he still, I mean, it is more
like pro, but he knew that, I would think, right?
He's obviously very, very smart.
And obviously he knows a lot more basketball than we all know.
But last night was his chance to kind of reconnect with our fan base.
And I just felt like he dropped the ball.
You know, we wanted to be, like Shannon said yesterday, we wanted our coach to be upset when we lose.
We want to know how you're going to fix it, not talk about, like you said, Tony Robbins quotes the whole night.
I'd say, I think Tony Robbins mixed with Bill Walton would be the best way to.
That's a good way to put it.
Yeah, Mark, go ahead, Mark.
Hey, how you guys doing today?
Doing good.
Before you say that, Mark, one more thing.
What was he talking about AI pictures of plane crashes and all that?
You're right.
What was that, Shannon?
I don't even know what he's talking about.
He said there were AI pictures of his wife being pregnant and plane crashes.
What was that?
I think that somebody had made those and maybe sent them and he had seen those online.
Did he think that every, I mean, nobody covers this more than me.
I didn't know what he was talking about.
I hadn't even seen the pictures.
I hadn't seen him either.
All right, go ahead, sir.
a couple of things and I'll get off here real quick Matt
you kind of stole my thunder there that's what I was going to ask
if this is bizarre to us
his actions and what he says
imagine how it is with his players and with recruits
and that could be a lot of the problem that we're seeing
could be I mean I think that's a fair
appreciate the call I think it's a fair question
you know again I have found myself in room
with people who talk like this.
They're usually,
it's usually political or it's like
new age hippie religion
stuff.
And they're not talking about what he's
talking about, but like just people who talk like that.
And I find it exhausting.
I really do.
Like it just rubs me the wrong way.
And I love Mark Pope.
But there was a part of me that was going,
hey man, just get to the point.
Yeah.
And just answer what he's,
Tom is not Mike Wallace.
Just answer his question.
We were trying to help you last night, I felt like.
I thought he was too, and Mark wouldn't take the help.
We'll come back.
