Starting point is 00:02:55 Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome everyone to Kentucky Sports Radio Thursday. February the 12th. I'm Matt Jones here at the KSports. Bar and Grill in Lexington, where we'd love to have you come out and see us and have a wing or two or a burger. It is Matt Jones, Ryan Lemon Drew Franklin. Clark's Pump and Shop phone line. What is it? 772.
Starting point is 00:03:16 That's not yet. 859-2-80-2287. A Vigin Auto Glass Text Machine is... 772-774-5254. That's impressive that you do that. And this edition spots about TJ Smith Law Office. You call TJ. He'll make them pay.
Starting point is 00:03:30 It is chilly, but still... okay outside. I can't really get out of my house because of the ice. Yeah. Like, y'all, I don't know if I'm more forgiving of the city of Lexington or what, because this, you know, I've been here now a couple nights, and you know how steep my driveway is. Pretty steep.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I now understand why people shuffle. I used to just, I used to just think, well, like, it'll melt. Well, yeah, but then at some points it turns to ice. And then like yesterday, when it gets wet, like when it starts to melt, forget it. So to get out of my house and get down that hill, so I can't even pull my car up to park it in the garage. Forget that. I'm not driving down that hill.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I'll slide into the lake, right? Yeah. So to get up the hill, I have to park on the street and walk up. But walking up, how do you walk up that hill? So one person in the neighborhood did their driveway. Yeah. So I already know what you're doing. I walk up their driveway.
Starting point is 00:04:42 I go and I Spider-Man from one house, tiptoe through the grass. And by Spider-Man, I mean, I get up against the wall and hold on the wall and then move through the thing. And then I get to the other place. and then I, like, almost crawl on my knees to the other house, it's a bad sight. And all I think is I'm glad nobody's filming. Because it takes me a good three or four minutes to get from the third house to my house. That's why we shoveled. But I really am Spider-Manning.
Starting point is 00:05:17 But I have no other choice. There's no other way for me to get in my house. I don't know what else I'm supposed to do. You know, a hotel? Would you do, like, bear crawl on the ground on what ground? I didn't have it. If we're being honest, yesterday afternoon, I had to bear crawl because I fell. Now the true story comes out.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And I had to crawl up the ice. But I felt like I was the dude that climbed the building on Netflix. I was like poking my holes into the ice. Yeah. Welcome to the reality of living in Lexington in the last few weeks. To take my trash out, I've basically been ice skating over to my bins. I don't really know what else I'm supposed to do unless I were to walk like four blocks around the block, which feels like a huge waste. Yeah, you can't put it.
Starting point is 00:05:56 parking front of your house. That's the street. You got to park behind and walk up that hill. I thought about just sliding down. But that would be... We do have to give a big shout out to the sun. It has done wonders the last 48 hours. No one has been happier to see the sun than our mayor. I'm a close second. It's done wonders from my neighborhood. I saw a pile of snow. Where did I see it? I think it was at UK football stadium. Have you seen that pile? I haven't seen it. I think when they did the parking lot at UK Football State. There's a pile that
Starting point is 00:06:24 has to be 25 feet in the air. That one's going to be here until opening kickoff. There's a pile over, I think it's called the warehouse district, mirror twin, all that over there, the new country boy. They have a pile, and on Instagram, they're taking guesses for the day
Starting point is 00:06:40 and officially melts, and it has like big prize packages, but they've turned it into a game, and when will the pile go away? Well, this, that one at Commonwealth Stadium is going to be there a while. But, but yeah, anyway, I'm here, and last night we did the KS Bar Pickham. First of all, really good crowd of people came up out here.
Starting point is 00:06:59 We had 75 entries into the thing, which is more than I thought we'd have. So we're going to do it again in a couple weeks for money. I think people enjoyed it. I learned kind of what worked and what didn't. I'd never done it for basketball. Probably gave people too many games, so it was a little hectic. But you know what? I think I got the flow of it.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Drew it ended Shannon in classic KSR fashion. Of course it did. Disaster. Yeah. Okay. I wouldn't expect anything less. Well, so here was my plan. Let me just tell you what my plan was.
Starting point is 00:07:28 My plan was people had 10 games picking the first half. Everybody did that. The finalist moved to the second half. The second half would all be the games that are on television, television so people can watch it, right? And that was six games. But the Yukon Butler game started 30 minutes after the first five. So here's my plan.
Starting point is 00:07:46 All right? I narrow from the first half to the second half. We eliminate like 30 people. then at the end, each game in the first half, or excuse me, in the second half, one finalist moves on. Drew, you get 10 finalists, and then they have to, whatever, they have to predict the end of the Yukon Butler game. Okay. So that the whole crowd is watching Yukon Butler cheering it on to win the money. You see what my plan is.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Simple enough? Here's where the plan goes awry. Stupid Cal Berkeley, Syracuse. Now, we were just there, all right? So we, like they should like me, Cal Berkeley, Syracuse decides to go into double overtime. First of all, what are those teams doing in the same conference? Can you find, are there two schools in the country, Shannon, in the same conference, farther than Cal Berkeley and Syracuse? Probably not.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Probably not. That's probably why they didn't want to leave each other. You travel all this way. Let's play as much as we can't play this worth. So Cal Berkeley and Syracuse goes and finishes after the U-Colm. run game. So that was, so now I'm like, what are we going to do? I got these people, they want to win this money from Cornybred Ham, what am I going to do? So I had to adjust on the fly, and I had to say to the 10 people that made the finals, predict these games that start at 9 and the end at 11. They did,
Starting point is 00:09:08 and I have a winner, but we all, I had to send, I could, I had to send all these people home. Like, we couldn't wait, right? We had to close, you know, so, so I have our winners, but people had to leave without knowing the winner, which I feel bad. Yeah, this one doesn't sound like it was on your fault in the format. The game went crazy, but I wouldn't expect anything different. This was 15 years of us trying to have a contest. I tried. And everybody was so excited.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And then, okay, so 70 people here, 10 finalists. How about this? A family comes. Mother, father, son, two daughters. One daughter's 12. Four of the five family members made the finals. Oh, wow. Dad got sleepy and left.
Starting point is 00:09:49 He didn't even get to be in it. Dad left him here. Let me just say, the 12-year-old, Shannon, came in fourth place. Wow. The 12-year-old. One of the first qualifiers was the 12-year-old. She doesn't get money. I'm sorry, Eloise.
Starting point is 00:10:01 You might be sitting at home trying to find out if you want. It's a family of ball-knowers. That's a family that knows ball. All these people had their science and all this, and this family, like, gets there. So here I know too much. This sounds like Insider Trading. He's a coach at Lexington Catholic. The dad is.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Sounds like a Terry Rozier situation. But he left. He left. So he didn't. get it. All right, so real quick, let me give you the top three. Okay. So they're hearing this for the first time. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:24 So big. And for those of you coming, you can come by next week. I'll tell you when to get your check. We'll have your money for you. But I know, I think, who you people are. Dana Stevens comes in third. Okay. She was around the top all the time.
Starting point is 00:10:41 She said her name several times. She was around the top. By the way, let me give a shout to Ryan Lemon. Ryan Lemon was a finalist, Shannon. He made the finalist. He made the final 10. And he was all over the top all night in game after game. You did amazingly well.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Thank you, sir. I know ball. I'm a great handicapper. What games did you pick last night? In the finals? Just in general. Name a game that was one of the ones you picked. Florida, Georgia.
Starting point is 00:11:08 There you go. Well done. Bamma Ole Miss. All right, see? Yeah. Now you see why he was so good. He didn't use his line for the first time in show history. I was waiting for it.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Yeah, you didn't say Holiday Ole Miss. Express. Good. We're getting it out of your head. So Dana came in third. Avery is second. He'll win $300. And then first place, and he was around the top all night, too. Lee, who came in first place. Congratulations to Lee. Lee, Lee, you will win $1,000. So Lee, Avery, and Dana, you'll come by next week and get your checks. And I would say to them, great job. A lot of fun. And now when we do it next time, Mama, have it rolling. I got to say, I was standing here watching it and Matt was so excited
Starting point is 00:11:52 everybody's kind of on pins and needles we get right down to it and when that Cal Syracuse game went into overtime I thought somebody had punched you in the belly You know you have all these At its core I'm like way too much of a people please I don't think you
Starting point is 00:12:07 If everybody thinks oh Matt just tries to make people mad for ratings I want to please people There's nothing better than seeing the faces on people When you make them happy So all these people are here, they're all excited, and Cal Syracuse just won't end. Won't end. Time out after time out.
Starting point is 00:12:25 And then I look at my staff and they're sitting over there. They're like, I want to go home. They were all sitting at the back table. They were all sitting at the back table like, oh, in. Wrap it up, Matt. But still, it didn't. But everybody was standing around and were so anxious. It really got anxious and exciting there towards the end, trying to see who those 10 finals were
Starting point is 00:12:44 and how they were going to win the big money. Two lessons from the game real quick. Number one, Vegas is good. Very good. Vegas is good. There were three times that there was a multi-person tie for closest in a game, and I'd be like, oh, well, that's what the spread was. There were some people that just picked the spread, and for at least two games, it worked.
Starting point is 00:13:05 So Vegas is good. Second, the more you know about the team, the worst you did in the game. The games people got the most correct. Shannon were like Wofford, Samford, because they didn't have any. knowledge. But then everybody out thinks themselves for Alabama, Ole Miss. I mean, we had a couple people pick Travis Perry as the leading score. Come on. Were they related to Travis? The only player they knew.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Exactly. So anyway. It was a lot of fun, though. A lot of fun. Thank you for coming out. Sure, I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed you getting anxious there towards the end. You like that? That's what makes these KSR contest good is when they kind of go straight.
Starting point is 00:13:40 You get so frustrated. Like we were, Jennifer and I were sitting there talking about because some many times you said, okay, this is what we're going to do. Okay, this is what we're going to do. Because I had to keep adjusting. You had to keep adjusted. Five minutes like, okay, this is what we're going to do. Yeah, well, sometimes you had to try to do what we're going to do.
Starting point is 00:13:54 What is Kentucky going to do Saturday when we go to Gainesville? Probably the hardest game on the schedule all year. You know, I didn't get to keep up with the game all night in the Georgia game, but they're so good. Those bigs are so. Well, they were up 10-0 to start the game. They jumped on right away. And those bigs are just so big and physical and good.
Starting point is 00:14:12 I mean, I worry about Malachi and Brandon and Yelovich, see if they can hand them. handle those are there Florida's big guys so if they can kind of match them up match up pretty well with we maybe got a chance but I don't I don't see it happening that's not very confident Aberdeen returns to his former stomping ground that's big I hope he plays well Ryan's right about Florida's front court though I don't know I don't remember one like this they had 72 paint points against Alabama that's a week and a half ago they've got a version of Oscar he's getting he leads the SEC and rebounds by over three rebounds and he's second country. I think you had 20 last night.
Starting point is 00:14:49 What's his name again? But he's just one of three big guys that they have. I don't think we're going to win, and I think Florida is a, as peaking and they're ahead of everyone else, kind of by a wide margin with that front court. But we have Brandon Garrison. That's right.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Yes. We have Yelovich, Malachi, Diabate. I mean, this is a show me game for those guys. It is. Right? Like, this is a show me game. I mean, who do we put on the guys? That's the Oscar-like guy. Deibate may be the best matchup, but he doesn't start even when coming off the bench, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:25 I mean, but you're probably going to have to play. I mean, you've got Condon. I mean, they're a problem. They are a problem, but we're a problem. That's right. I mean, they're beatable. We're a problem, too, Mario. Don't let him say that.
Starting point is 00:15:39 They just killed Texas A&M at Texas A&M. I think Texas A&M is good. But we have one-eight of none. Have one-eight of nine. And we don't duck any smoking. Shannon, why are these guys so negative? Why can't we be positive about this? I mean, they can win this game.
Starting point is 00:15:53 Yeah, they won at Tennessee. You didn't think we were going to win at Tennessee? I didn't. You didn't think we were going to win at Arkansas? I did. I picked us to win both those games by double digits. I don't remember it that way. Pull the tape.
Starting point is 00:16:06 I do think we have an advantage in the back court. I mean, Boogie Flan and that lead kid for them, I think our guys kind of match up pretty well with them. I agree. They were both awesome last night against Georgia. Okay, again. I'm just telling you, Florida looks like a unit right now. I mean, they look like a problem for everyone. They may look like a unit.
Starting point is 00:16:24 We are a unit. I'm not saying we're definitely going to lose. I'm just saying they are way above everyone else in the conference right now. You are way too negative. This is Kentucky, Florida, and we have won eight of nine. And they're the defending national champion. That's what they want you to win. Just a couple of weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I barely remember our last one. They got destroyed at home against Auburn just a couple of weeks ago. There we go. Look at that. See, that's what I need, Shaden. Me and you versus the war. There you go. 772-774-5-254 is a text machine.
Starting point is 00:16:55 859-28027. Stanford Boston College would be at two teams almost as far apart as Cal Syracuse. Yes. We'll take a break. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. Last night, a blown call changed a game.

Starting point is 00:18:57 This is Clever Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, the Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
Starting point is 00:19:05 We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42.

Starting point is 00:19:45 They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew. Pinky has financial issues. I like the bougie style of Housewives show. I think it looks like it's going to be interesting. On the podcast, Reality with the King, I, Carlos King, recap the biggest moments from your favorite reality shows, including the Real Housewives franchise, the drama, the alliances, and the team everybody's talking about.
Starting point is 00:20:08 As an executive producer in reality television, I'm not just watching it. I understand the game. As somebody who creates shows, I'll even say this. At the end of the day, when people are at home, they want entertainment. To hear this and more, listen to Reality with the King on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back, Tech East Sports Radio. I see you there, Shannon. 859-280-2287.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Text machine 772 775254. One person writes Matt, Jeff Goodman says Kentucky's going to get run by 30 off the court. Then he should hang out with these two, Shannon. Me and you, we will be more positive during our thing. We're going to run Florida out of their own building. That's what we're going to do Saturday. That's what we're going to do. I guess we haven't learned a lesson.
Starting point is 00:20:57 I mean, they did go into Tennessee and won. They did go into Arkansas and win. They come from behind. When are we going to learn our lesson? This team has a lot of heart and a lot of fight in them. We've also won six straight in the swap. It's big. Wow.
Starting point is 00:21:09 That's a pretty, it's kind of amazing our run in these road environments. We've won six straight in the swamp. We've won three straight in Tennessee and what five, the last six. In our road environments against teams that are considered our rivals, we've oddly done really well. Played well at Arkansas over the last several years. Yeah, I agree. I think only lost once in the last four or five at Arkansas. We've only lost to Florida twice since 2000.
Starting point is 00:21:37 2018. And that's a rival. That's a good team. And a team we usually play twice a year. I mean, last year they won the national championship and they lost in Lexington. We only played them once last year, but most of the time we've played them twice. So that's a pretty good run. So again, all the more reason to be confident. I don't think, I'm not on the Jeff Goodman path to getting smoked by 30. I just think Florida playing at home. They've been on the road a few games, winning those. I just think they're much better than a lot of all the teams in the SEC, really.
Starting point is 00:22:02 But not necessarily blowout. One person writes, Matt, you got to ask right about his creepy. uh, cameos he's making. I, uh, had a little, you know, put a little out there. I've do some Valentine's cameos for you if you wanted one. So there's been a couple that I've done that have, uh, so wait a minute, you, people can get you to give a message to their woman. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:24 I think I've done like four or five of them. And what do you say? I say, you know, Valentine's Day is for lovers. So people are now paying you to do that? Uh-huh. Yeah. And usually they'll say, make it as crucial. creepy as possible.
Starting point is 00:22:39 They say that to you. Uh-huh. Yeah, my instructions. So with permission, I don't even want to know what you're doing. So it's one of these gone public. Is that why this person knows that? Maybe he ordered one or for his. So people can go to cameo and get you to say something to their woman. Yeah, as. Or a woman could get you to say it to their man. Yes, yes. That's hard for me to imagine that that would be well received. I feel like that's when Homer got Marge. a bowling ball. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:12 It's pretty fun and up for fun stuff like that, but I think if I got her a Ryan London cameo for Valentine's, that might be a couch night for me. I think she would love it. She would love one. How many have you done? I think I've done four or five of the Valentine's ones. You used to be big into cameo, didn't you?
Starting point is 00:23:28 It was a good moneymaker for you during COVID. It was, but I think it's kind of one of like my space, and it's kind of just kind of slow to disappear. Like my space. It kind of slowly fades from our public conscious. You think it's like MySpace. Okay. Yeah, I used to do, I got during COVID where I had so many requests I ended up like I couldn't even do it.
Starting point is 00:23:47 I remember you saying that. And it was a good little source of money. I haven't done it in years. They keep writing me and ask me to come back and I just forget. It was good during COVID. We're stuck at home. You know, you can do that. Just kind of entertain yourself.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I loved ordering them for my friends. We sit each other some great ones. I loved it. William Hung. Yeah, that's it. That was the ones I did. All right, so I'm going to give you a little bit of your, well, actually, I'll do this next segment. Let's go the phone.
Starting point is 00:24:13 So who's up first? All right. Let's go to Adam. Adam. Adam, go ahead, Adam. Hey, what's up, guys? What's going on? I just wanted to say, Matt, loved your podcast with the field of 68 guys.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Thank you. What is your relationship like now with Jeff Goodman? You all seem to be getting along pretty well. Yeah, we get along really well. I mean, I had Jeff Goodman. Well, there were probably three people that for various reasons, the Cal era took either friendships or acquaintances I had and kind of ruined them. One of them was a really good friend. And then a couple of them were Jeff, like people in the media that I knew and we used to get along.
Starting point is 00:24:58 And then because of differences about Cal, we stopped. And, you know, all three of those I've reconnected with. and it's been good and Jeff was one of those I mean Jeff's always been Jeff but we used to really get along and then he was so anti
Starting point is 00:25:17 Cal and Cal was so anti him that people almost had to choose here's the thing about Cal and I it's not a criticism necessarily because I'm kind of like this too I forgive people
Starting point is 00:25:32 okay so like if you dislike me I forgive you. Like I'm not going to spend hate like in my heart. But I wasn't always like that. I used to be like you're either with me or against me. When Cal was here, I don't know what he's like now. But when Cal was here, that's how he was. You're either Team Cal or you're the enemy.
Starting point is 00:25:56 And even with his friends, like he wanted you, you picked us up. You know what I mean, Drew? Like that's just kind of how it was. and the people he didn't like, he really didn't like. And Jeff Goodman was one of those. So it was like hard to be Jeff Goodman's friend and to also be close to Cal. It just was hard. There were people who did it, but it was hard.
Starting point is 00:26:20 And I got so wrapped up in it that sometimes I would just be like, Jeff Goodman's the worst. And he's not the worst. And so, you know, it's been good to reconnect with it. Appreciate the call. I mean, you see this with like Seth Greenberg. Like watch Seth Greenberg now. Seth Greenberg hates UK fans. He hates us because he's Cal.
Starting point is 00:26:42 It's like he's Cal and that's just the way it is. Over the years, Mike DeCorsese is like that. Although Mike is nice, but you know what I mean. Like that's, Drew, that's just what happened during that era. Yeah, well, Greenberg, he ruined game day. That's my beef. But on Cal, especially in the early days, KSR did a lot of just defending anyone that tried to say anything about Kentucky won and done and Cal,
Starting point is 00:27:03 any national media guy, if they said something that we thought, was offensive We rode. We're even Cal. You know, we're right back at it. And he loved it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:11 He loved that about us. He seemed to have forgotten about that. Yeah, he loved that. He loved that about us. We rode for him kind of no matter what. And, you know, we were younger. Like, I said stuff back then. I wouldn't say now.
Starting point is 00:27:28 But you live and you live and you learn. So while we're talking about this, so do you think he felt betrayed when things started going south for, and we didn't defend him? as much as we thought we should have? I think in Cal's eye, when he brings you in, it's a betrayal to criticize at all, which is a weakness of his. Like, the way to be a good leader, you have to accept criticism from people who care about you.
Starting point is 00:27:57 You kind of have to shut off criticism from the world. But when people care about you, you can't get mad if they criticize you. So, you know, most of my public criticisms of Cal, I privately told him way before that. But he didn't want to hear that. He didn't want to hear any of it, ever. And to me, that's a mistake. When I see leaders do that, they're making a mistake. If you, if all criticism makes you a bad person, that's bad.
Starting point is 00:28:28 When you go 9 and 16 and lose the St. Peter's back-to-back. What do you want us to say? Exactly. You want us to go. that's good. Rambo's and Butterfly. We'll get them next year. Pupping rainbow and butterflies.
Starting point is 00:28:37 I had fun not going to the weekend. What are you supposed to say? You can't turn poop into filet mignon. Ice cream. Yeah. So we'll take a break. Very back. KSR.
Starting point is 00:28:50 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Great song. Matt Davis, right? Yep.
Starting point is 00:29:02 That's right. Yep. Willie Nelson did a version of this song, too. Oh, he did. That's the only version I think I've ever heard. 859-280-2287. Every time I do these sort of like cow thing, like the relationship thing, people are always lights up with questions.
Starting point is 00:29:18 One person says, Matt, don't you think there's a difference between public criticism and private feedback? Yes, but when your job is public criticism, you can't not do it. It's like asking a lawnmower not to mow lawns. Like, I have to say what I think. about this stuff so like you couldn't that's why it's probably hard for coaches to be friends with media members like i don't think media members in like i'm friends with vince merrill makes it very hard for me to probably completely publicly i don't think in the future i'll ever become friends with any of these coaches again i i really like i was friends of dwayne pv
Starting point is 00:29:59 friends with v friends i won't say we're friends of cow but like good connection i'm not going to I don't think I'm ever going to do that yet. I think it's a mistake, Ryan, to be friends with the coaches because you can't really be objective. I had a news director tell me years ago in Evansville, John Stern said, do you not be friends with the people you cover? Coaches, players. It's a mistake.
Starting point is 00:30:20 You can't because there's going to come a time where you've got to be critical of them. You have to. There's nothing you could. And like, I, I, it's just, yeah. So I think it's, I won't do it again. I think there was, it's just not, I'll be like acquaintances to get new. from them and I'll be nice to them but like I'm not going to be I just don't think it's a smart thing to do you kind of got to keep them in arms linked a little bit you do a little bit do you agree with that
Starting point is 00:30:45 yeah and I didn't have a connection with Cal at all really didn't need one I don't care to have one my whole thing was just and I've said many times wrote on the board last night it's very simple for me did Kentucky win did Kentucky lose and that's going to be my emotions there's no personal agendas with any of this I want Kentucky to be the best at everything and when they're not I'm going to sound like but you get away with stuff like it's funny is and I think it's just because you're so good-natured, both of you get away with things. Like, I can't.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Like, it's funny. Like, you, Ryan, will be much harsher with these coaches in some ways that I am. Drew definitely is. But they don't ever get mad at you. Because you're the host. They get mad at me for what you say. You're the host. You're the figurehead for this show.
Starting point is 00:31:34 OCR wouldn't. No, they're getting mad at me. I hear about it, but I just don't care. But they don't call you. Like, Mark Stoops once, I think it'd be okay with me saying this. He called me livid about something he heard I said. This was a couple years ago. And I said, well, first of all, I didn't say that.
Starting point is 00:31:51 Drew said it. But I said, I think what Drew meant was, ber, bra, bra, bra, bra, bra. And I go, but if you want to call Drew, I'm sure he'll talk to you about. And he goes, no, no, no, no. I'm not going to call him. Drew's a good guy. I was like, well, he was the one that actually said it. There's been things that callers have called this show and said.
Starting point is 00:32:09 People say they heard it on KSR. When the coaches get word of it, they think we said it because it was on KSR. All right, so it's time for my Matt Jones Daily Olympic Update. Are you ready? I'm ready. All right, so there's a lot of big stories. Okay. Number one, Canada plays hockey here in just a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:32:24 We're going to have it on here. We're going to have it on here. So Canada plays hockey. But those are not the ones that I think. think you're probably most interested in. The Finnish ski jumping coach. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Head coach of Finnish ski jumping. He was asked to leave the Olympics because he, quote, Shannon, had been drinking too much around the village. You can't be doing that. Can't be doing that. How much do you think the Finnish coach was drinking if he was drinking too much around the village? Clearly, they have alcohol there.
Starting point is 00:32:56 And they're getting wasted already. And he's from Finland, where I think people drink. drink like when they get up in the morning. Yeah, brush their teeth with that stuff. Yes. We can guarantee he wasn't the only coach out there drinking. But they sent him home, which also makes me think he must have really been going. Wow.
Starting point is 00:33:13 It's not the amount. There's a lot of people drinking in the village. I mean, there's Russians that just drink vodka like water. There's drinking everywhere. He had to have done something related to the alcohol. So send him home. So the ski jumpers have no coach. So if you see Finland ski jumping and they just fall off and fly into the air, they didn't
Starting point is 00:33:30 have a coach there to tell them, go down. I think they'll get better. They got their drunk coach out of the way. The coach was going to say, go down, and they're not going to do it because they don't have a coach there. All right, second. Breasy Johnson. Okay, I don't know if you saw. Breezy Johnson, she won the gold
Starting point is 00:33:46 medal in the downhill. She's an American. Her name is Breezy. Okay. So there's another event, the Super G. She's doing their Super G. She crashes and flies into the woods. She's okay. But when she gets, after she gets up and she gets taken to the bottom,
Starting point is 00:34:04 you know, she's sad because she crashed, can't win the gold medal, et cetera. Her husband or her boyfriend gets down on one knee and asks her to bear it. Is that the right time, Shannon, to propose after a crash in the Olympic race? No, absolutely not. I mean, I guess it could make you feel a little bit better about crashing, right? Well, that's the question. Does it make you feel better?
Starting point is 00:34:28 Is it, because clearly he planned to do it after she finished well. Yeah. So do you sit there and go, oh, no, I shouldn't, you know, I was going to do this to celebrate, but then do you go, well, no, wait a minute, this will make her feel better. No, I don't know. Do you go ahead and go through with it? No, I think you got to call an audible at that point. So you're a no.
Starting point is 00:34:54 What do you think, right? I'm sure there's a lot of thought going into this. She's in two events. I'm going to do it after the second event But she won the gold after the first event But if you give it to her then Then he throws her off for the second event I think his strategy was probably like I'm away when she's all done
Starting point is 00:35:07 After the second event It'll be a wonderful moment for us But she had flown into the trees I go even farther Dude go sit in the stands and cheer her on And let her be an Olympian this week You can get engaged another time It has nothing to do with her crash
Starting point is 00:35:22 This is a big moment for her Let it be her gold medal moment and then you all can have your moment and others. She'll get two big life days, but combine it all at once, you're distracting her from this personal achievement. I don't know her. I assume she's worked her whole life to get to this. Sit your ass down in the stands and do the ring another time.
Starting point is 00:35:39 This is about her and her Olympic gold journey. All right, strong statements. So he tried to insert himself in her situation. Be a supportive husband, cheer, give her a big hug, but don't make it about you and your marriage at the Olympics. Wow, I like it. Okay. Third, you remember the guy who cheated?
Starting point is 00:35:56 on his girlfriend and then at the finish line said that they were you know he had he wanted to win her back yeah after he'd won the bra she's made a statement oh I didn't see this she made a statement and said something to the effect
Starting point is 00:36:11 of he has caused me a lot of hurt basically said I ain't getting back together with him good for her how great is that the guy poured his heart out the guy to the world and she's like nope not happening She essentially says no.
Starting point is 00:36:29 And, like, leave me alone. Because like we said, I'm sure that guy thought I'm going to win her back over by pressing my mistake and my love for her to the world. She'll be so touched by, she'll take me back. So is this the worst decision of all time to do it? Not only did you embarrass yourself on a national stage, but she, international stage, but then she also says, no, we're not getting back together. Yeah, now the next girl you're going to date with him. like, hey, you're that, you're that guy that cheated on his girlfriend after three months and he told the world. And then, like, embarrassed yourself.
Starting point is 00:37:00 He managed a way to hurt all parties involved here, make it even worse for everyone. Yeah, he took the private cheating, and he not only broke her heart, he now publicly embarrassed. He may need to go back to the woman he cheated with because she may be the only woman that would take him at this point. She should be like, no, you went crawling back to her on to the world. That's a great. Great point. I think he's going to be alone with his ski. Finally, there was a Ukrainian skeleton rider.
Starting point is 00:37:29 That's the one where you go head first. Okay. He was wearing a helmet that had pictures of victims of the Russian attack on Ukraine, and he wanted to wear it. The IOC has a rule that in your uniform, you can't make a political statement. He refused to back down, and they wouldn't let him skeleton. What do you think? It was pictures of people who had died in the war.
Starting point is 00:38:02 So the IOC woman that made the decision was crying. She cried and said, I hate to have to do this, but this is the rule. What do you think? I'm hearing this for the first time. I admire the guy for standing up for something like this, but, you know, if they let somebody get by with it, then other people get by with it. I'm glad you said she was crying because that's a tough decision. to have to make, but it's the right decision. But I admire him for standing up for what he believes in.
Starting point is 00:38:28 What do you think? I'd tell him his message got out more than it would have. I heard this on the radio this morning. We're talking about it now. I saw it all over Twitter. I don't even know what sport he's in. Skeleton. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:38 If he had just skeletoned his way to the finish line with that, I don't think he would have. He was already getting a lot of media attention because he's from Ukraine. He's the only athlete, I think, from Ukraine. I'm sure he was. But I'm saying he got more now because I think even more people are talking about it. What do you think, Shannon? Should they have made an exception to the rule? No, but because they didn't exactly what Drew is saying.
Starting point is 00:38:56 We're talking about it on Kentucky Sports Radio. We would not have been talking about it otherwise. True. But you can't make an exception for that. I mean, it's a rule. Yeah. Well, his argument was this is pictures of people. That's not a political statement.
Starting point is 00:39:10 It's a tribute to the people that died. And the IOC was like, there's no way to say that, though, without, like, bringing up the fact that they died in a war. Right. Are there rules against pictures of people? I'll be honest, I've never seen them. I don't know if there are rules against pictures of people or not. I would assume maybe, but anyway, so there you go. That is your Olympic news.
Starting point is 00:39:31 Notice I gave you no results for many of them. More to come. More to come. I'm enjoying the Olympics of the stories. Those stories we all had today. I'm not going to go into it, but there's a story about, I don't know if you saw the ice dancing, the French, sassy, evil couple versus the American. Have you seen that?
Starting point is 00:39:46 I watched it live. I have a complaint. Yes. Our boy right here, where is he? Johnny Weir, before they started, said to beat America, France needs this. They've never gotten that high in their careers. And I went, he just announced her jinxed us right there. Well, but they also, they have an evil history.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Like they've all, like, you've got to go read. The French shouldn't have won last. It was an upset. Our American married couple were crying. They are, well, it's not good. You can go read for yourself all the issues. 859-280-2287. We'll take a break.

Starting point is 00:43:55 Text Machine, 772-7-7-4-5-25-4. One person writes, I feel good about Saturday. We're finally playing with enough consistency that I think Pope can focus on the game plan and not worry about effort, et cetera. Agree with that? I do agree with that. I just think Florida is just really, really good. Like, I feel better about our chances going to Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina.
Starting point is 00:44:17 So this is the hardest game left on the schedule. I think about far. I said before the season, I thought the hardest game on the schedule was at Louisville, but Florida is now better than Louisville. So I think you could argue the hardest game is at Florida, right? Florida's last four SEC games, two of them on the road against good teams. They won by 20, 21, 23, and this one's so much, I can't even do the math. That's like 40-something, 38. Those are the last four games.
Starting point is 00:44:45 It's a lot. And three of those were on the road. But this one's at home. I'm just saying they have turned a corner. The back courts were good. They're good. They're good. And Lee looked great last night.
Starting point is 00:44:56 And that three-headed monster of a front court is unlike anything. We'll see. Yeah. One person writes, Matt, your situation is different than things like the lawnmower. Cal blasted your career into the atmosphere and you turned on him. Well, I didn't turn on him. I judged what he did. But that's also, no offense to you, sir, a really dumb argument.
Starting point is 00:45:18 He did. without question have a huge effect on our career, mine specifically. However, that doesn't mean that you have undying loyalty to the point that you're not fair. Let me give you an example. If Donald Trump picks as one of his cabinet members someone, they owe him for that pick, am I correct? Yes. But does that mean that if they see him doing something wrong, they shouldn't mention it?
Starting point is 00:45:48 If so, then you end up with someone who has no checks on them forever. So you can't have that attitude. You can't have the attitude that, okay, well, I owe you a part of my career, so thus I'll never, ever say you did anything wrong. If you do that, you end up with what we had when Joe Biden was president. A ton of people who had their jobs because of him, and when his mental acuity was going, no one would say it. because they all owed him their jobs.
Starting point is 00:46:19 Right? You can't live like that. And with the cow comparison, you had one tournament win in five years. If we're going to be low, how many years are we going to go with one win until we can say something? Like, we have to speak up
Starting point is 00:46:30 when Kentucky basketball is not even relevant in March Madness. And let's say you don't even know Mark Pope, because most of you listening don't. Everyone loves him. Everyone considers him part of us. But that only gets you so far. He still has to win.
Starting point is 00:46:46 You know, that's the nature of this business and this job. It was not okay to lose to St. Peter's and to lose to Oakland and to have like one tournament win in five years. It's not okay to not get to the weekend of the SEC tournament. That was not Kentucky basketball. He deserved to be criticized. I think he was just so thin skinned he couldn't handle it. Starting point is 00:47:32 Who's next, Jen? Jerry. Jerry, go ahead, Jerry. Hey, man, I'm not saying about El Paso yesterday. I haven't flown down there a lot. A lot of people don't realize that that airport in Fort Bliss are like right on top of each other. In fact, when you fly into El Paso's airport, they will warn you to verify which runway you're on because the main north-south runways at El Paso and Fort Bliss are
Starting point is 00:47:58 parallel to each other, and people have made mistakes and actually land at Fort Bliss. By the way, El Paso, it turns out they say it was a party balloon that shut the airport. Well, yeah, the problem of Fort Bliss is... No, wait a minute. Hang on before, I want to focus on that before you go to. to the problem with Fort Bliss. Yeah, they said they were shooting like their lasers. At a balloon. At a balloon.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Well, I mean. Jerry, stop. We'll get to you. They just keep talking to us like we're idiots. We don't believe it was a party balloon. Well, what do you think it was? Well, I don't know, but a party balloon, that's the best you could come up with. If we're shutting down for a party balloon, we've got bigger problems.
Starting point is 00:48:35 Well, that's why I think that's what it is. Like, if it was not a party balloon, that makes us look stupid to say it's a party balloon. So the fact that they have not denied it was a party balloon makes me believe it was a party balloon. Because, like, the department, the government does not want to make us think our military
Starting point is 00:48:54 closes down airplace for a party balloon. So once that story comes out, if they don't deny it, Shannon, then to me that means it's probably true, right? We're talking about just a normal little balloon? I don't know how, it was, the quote was party balloon. I think they're bad at lying.
Starting point is 00:49:10 But why would they lie and want it to be a party balloon. So we'll be like, oh, it's a balloon. What's next? You're going to shut down for 10 days because of that? Yeah, I think they thought it was something else. They got fooled by balloon. And now they're embarrassed. We'll fire everyone if we're shutting down stuff for balloons. All right, go ahead, Jerry.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Well, what I'm going to say is the kind of, but what you're talking about, is that they're real sensitive to what goes on around Fort Bliss. Because Fort Bliss, in addition to being the home in first calf, is where the Army tests and develops all of its anti-aircraft capabilities like Iron Dome all this stuff and in fact you see that mountain range on the other side of that mountain range is white sands and that's what they test all this stuff
Starting point is 00:49:55 and they're hyper-sensitive to what goes on there and it's right next to the border yeah well I appreciate the call Jerry okay I can't do anymore Jerry if they if they if they're shooting down balloons that makes me a little conservative well they were saying I guess they were trying to use lasers and I think That's why they shut down the airspace. They said it was lasers?
Starting point is 00:50:14 There's a report out where they were shooting lasers. So that's why they shut it down. What does that mean shoot a laser? I don't know. I got test them. Yeah. But what does that mean? A laser.
Starting point is 00:50:25 Like, I mean, I think of like Star Wars. It's kind of like that. So we have that? Yeah. Why do we use bullets at all if we have lasers? It feels like lasers would be much more effective. Well, we don't want everyone walking around with lasers. That seems like a problemat.
Starting point is 00:50:41 Yeah, just have our military have the lasers. I didn't mean people on the street. I'm just saying, like... They have a lot of technology. We don't have access to. Yeah. I just didn't know, Shannon, did you know we had lasers? No.
Starting point is 00:50:55 No? I guess I didn't. I don't know what our military is up to. They probably all kinds of stuff we don't know about. I'm a little wazers for like 50 years. Those aren't that unique. We probably have much crazier stuff than lasers. Okay.
Starting point is 00:51:09 I'm not... I don't know anything about this. You focus on your birthday balloon and figure out what's really going on. I don't understand why they would let balloon be the answer because they're stupid. And they're not that stupid. I mean, somebody there would go, this looks dumb. I mean, the three of us as radio hosts are not smarter than everyone in the military. We're smart enough to know it wasn't a birthday balloon.
Starting point is 00:51:32 I think it was. Because I think if it wasn't, they would tell us that. So we'll agree to disagree. We'll take a break. Come back. Hour number two, KSR. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
