Starting point is 00:02:39 Broadway.com. This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now, here's Matt Jones. Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Tuesday, February the 17th. I'm Matt Jones. After we were off for President's Day, we are back, and it is a game day as Kentucky plays Georgia this evening. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line.
Starting point is 00:03:06 859-2-80-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass Text Machine is 772-7-744. And this edition is sponsored by the T.J. Smith Law Office, if you call T.J. I'll make them pay. I got Ryan. I got Drew and I got Shannon. And I told Shannon during the break, it is the start of the lunar New Year. And it is also the first day of Ramadan tonight at sundown. And Shannon and I were trying to to discuss what is the lunar new year and we found out that neither one of us knew so Ryan Drew do you know what the lunar new year is I have no idea I wouldn't even have a guess why they call it the lunar new year Shand uh Drew do you know that is it related to the Chinese new year are they the same similar no uh well actually it says
Starting point is 00:03:57 maybe maybe maybe you're right I can Wikipedia isn't clear because it but it says Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new year according to lunar calendars, but lunar calendars are 11 days shorter than solar calendars. It marks the first new moon, right? That's what I said to you during the break. What does that mean new moon? What's it's back to the first cycle. It goes in a big cycle all year.
Starting point is 00:04:24 This moon is cycling. But then, after 365 days, it comes back to the very point where it began. And that's the new lunar. The sun rotates around the earth. So what is the moon doing during this? It's just rotating. Excuse me, the earth rotates around the sun. It's spinning, moving, gyrating.
Starting point is 00:04:42 It's jirating. Yeah. Okay. And then after it tags the new moon and the new moon takes its lap around. That's right. It does a butt push to the moon. That's right. So none of you know what the answer is no one knows the answer to that.
Starting point is 00:04:55 And I don't know that that description. It says it mentions Chinese, but it also mentions is, and Afghanistan, so I guess there may be other places that celebrate the Lunar New Year. So I don't know the answer, but today is that day, and I hope everyone is enjoying their Lunar New Year, as they would like. Ryan, we were off yesterday, which means we didn't get to talk about the Kentucky, Florida game, but the Cats battled in Gainesville. I gave my thoughts on the game on the post-game show. I'll do it again after, but I'd like to give you two. a chance to kind of give your unfiltered thoughts before we start.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I thought they showed some fight. You know, a couple different times during the second half, they kept battle back, get it to four or five, maybe even two points, I think at one point. I thought they showed some fight. Just too many defensive lapses, giving up too many wide open shots, too many missed layups, too many turnovers, things you can't do and you go on the road and play in the SEC. But I left thinking, you know what, we get this team at Rupp. I ain't that scared of that team.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Bring them on. You're not scared of them. Not scared of them after what I saw. I think they're very, very good. I think they're very, very good. But I think we held our own showed enough fight that I think maybe on our home court, we might give them a battle. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Drew. Went about as I expected. I think I even said on pregame show, we'll probably be down eight like most of the game and just be in it, but never really threatening them. I kind of feel that's how it played out. But I'm with Ryan. I feel like we're a little closer than I thought we were. For me, the key wasn't even their front court.
Starting point is 00:06:26 It's that you let the other guys beat you. Clavzar and Lee had their best games of the season. and maybe even the best games of their careers. So to have two of the other guys beat you the way they did, you know, we don't do moral victories at Kentucky, but it was kind of promising knowing that the winning out at 8 and 9 the run Kentucky's been on, it wasn't like a fluke. They really have turned a corner and can compete.
Starting point is 00:06:47 Yeah, I was overall very encouraged. The guy off the bitch, Clavzar. Clavzor, yeah, that was the game of his career. Yeah, he had the game of his career. And we really struggled guarding those guys. guys, the guards, which I didn't suspect. Colin Chandler really, I mean, Colin Chandler played very well offensively. He really struggled on the defensive end.
Starting point is 00:07:11 And that hurt us. But I'm still kind of overall encouraged. I think if you could have Ryan done, I want to say, well, let me get to the positive because I don't want to lead with the negative. Positive. That was a game they easily could have quit. Yes. And they have sometimes.
Starting point is 00:07:33 I mean, when they get, they get down 15 now every game. I mean, you just have to assume we're going to be down 15. If we're playing a good game, we're going to be down 15. And a lot of times they fought back, an unbelievable amount of times. And then a few times they've absolutely quit. And when it was like 3217, I think pretty much everybody watching probably was like, well, this is headed towards the route zone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Uh-oh. And they turned it around. They made a couple big shots. I think Jasper Johnson hit a three that cut it to like 11, and then we got a basket, and then it was nine, and it kind of stayed like that to half. And then we started the second half on fire and cut it to two. And that little period, you know, we always used to talk in UK football about the final two minutes of the first half and first two of the second half, and how bad Mark Stoops was often during that.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Ryan Mark Pope, we were really good in that period in this game. And it took a game that was getting out of hand and made it manageable. So I like that. We were not able to keep them off the glass in the second half. But you kind of expected that. I mean, Florida came into the game, rebounding over 40% of their missed shot, Shannon, which is a crazy number. Yeah. That's a crazy number.
Starting point is 00:08:52 But the disappointing part to me was the starts because we laugh about them because we keep coming back. But Drew, we lost this game because of the start. If you don't fall 15 down at the beginning, if you just keep it within three or four, you might win that game. And I think this was a game where the start really did them in because most of the time when we've started poorly, we've either gotten blown out, which means we weren't going to win anyway, or we've come back and won. This was the first game where I think you saw how these starts hurt you because the start, in my opinion, is what kept them from being competitive as the game went on. Yeah, two things in my mind kept them from getting over the hump and maybe winning it.
Starting point is 00:09:35 It was the start where, again, it was Lee hitting threes. I mean, he averages won a game and shoot 25%. When that guy has six points right where, I think he had three threes in the first five, ten minutes. He had two back to back and right at the beginning. Yeah, when their fifth or six best player has ten points in the first half, all right, you're in big trouble on the road at Florida. But then in the second half, if Malachi Marino is not in foul trouble, I wonder how much closer the rebounding is because he had 11 in 20 minutes and he had more rebounds than
Starting point is 00:10:02 Florida's whole team five minutes into the game but when you got he got that fourth foul a couple minutes in the second half and he just couldn't be as aggressive he as good as Aberdeen was with 19 points even though he felt like 500 shots I thought merino was the star but foul trouble just held him back late I agree and garrison was really bad when he was in and so you just felt that gap uh when they were when those two were different I thought Diabate played well Chandler hit good shots. And the other thing, Ryan, is you didn't get a good game from O-Way. I mean, regardless of how many points he ended up with, it was not a good O-Way game.
Starting point is 00:10:36 We missed 15 layups. 15 layups. There's the difference in the game right there. Yeah, you hit five of those. I mean, we missed 15 layups. And I would say six or seven of those were relatively open. Now, we had some that were contested. and they're good at contested in the rim.
Starting point is 00:11:00 That may be Florida's best thing. But they, we just missed. I mean, Oway had three drives, Ryan, I can think of, where he beat his man and had a lap, and he just missed it. And I think that was a huge part of it as well. Yeah, out of those 15 laps, it felt like O'A missed most of them, and he missed some that were usually just gimmies. When he gets to the hoop, he finishes all, finish those.
Starting point is 00:11:23 He just didn't get it done. I feel like he misses those a lot, though. I mean, I have been. season seems like. For a guy that is really great getting the basket, I think he misses more than his share of layups. But go ahead. But he hits those, yeah,
Starting point is 00:11:38 it's a totally different game. And I think Florida did a good job trying to keep him, you know, off the three-point line even. They honored his shot. But the thing that I was kind of surprised about, you already mentioned it, like Chandler on defense. You know, Chandler on Nate A-Mint was one of the reasons they won that Tennessee game, but yet
Starting point is 00:11:54 he was getting beat time and time again against Florida on defense. He got beat a lot. And then they switched him up in the second half, and they had him a little bit on, what's his name? I keep wanting to call him clavicular, Shannon, because that dude keeps showing up on my TikTok. Urban clavzor. Clavzzar. I keep wanting to call him clavicular. Call him whatever you want.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Do you know who that dude is, by the way, the clavicular guy? Have you seen that guy? No. No, I know. No. He's like a dude. Well, I mean, I don't. I don't want to get. It's not worth going into.
Starting point is 00:12:29 But he like, he like punches himself in the face until he becomes perfectly beautiful. What a gimmick. Sounds like a real intellectual you got there. Well, that's why I kept getting mad that he was making all the threes against Florida. You needed to punch him in the face, maybe get Brandon Harrison to do it. But anyway, Chalern was on him a little bit in the second half, too. I don't know what, Chalor really struggled. But now he did hit threes.
Starting point is 00:12:54 He did. He had a couple, he had a couple drew that if he doesn't hit, we're not in the game. I mean, he hit them at like key times. Yeah, with Chandler early, he was going under those screens. I think it was part of the game plan because Lee doesn't have a great percentage. But then the second half, Clavzar was just hitting some bombs. He got hot. I'm kind of wanting Chandler to shoot a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:13:12 I know he's already shooting quite a bit. But he's got the confidence. He's kind of waiting until late in the game to make his big plays. We all know the big plays down the stretch. But I think Oway and Aberdeen were like one from 10 from three and like 12 for 36 from the field. I kind of isn't as good as guys have been in other games. I'm ready to see Chandler maybe get a little more selfish with three-point shooting and see what that can look like.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I'm with you. I would love to see Chandler shoot more. I mean, I think a relatively open three from Chandler to me is never a bad shot. If you, I feel like him kind of like I felt, you know, last year about Kobe Brea or Antonio Rees for a couple years or whatever. Like if he's open, Ryan, shoot it. I'll live with if it doesn't go in. Yeah, especially on a game, like Drew said, when Aberdeen and O'A, not not able to knock it down, run some plays to get him set.
Starting point is 00:14:01 It was such a liability on defense. I think they were afraid to play him a lot of minutes there late in the game. He's 14 for 24 from three since that Vandy dud, so I guess four games. Two weeks. I think I saw that under one metric, like something like Torvik or something like that, he's the 19th ranked player in the country since conference play, like an individual player rankings. So shoot, you know, I mean, I say take as many as you can. Hey, what was your stat on the postgame show about them being behind in 25 games? They're behind like 15 of them or something by 15 points.
Starting point is 00:14:40 I mean, they've been behind by at least 14 points in 12 of our 25 games. That's crazy. And I want you to consider that seven games this year, we've played like all. awful teams. Okay. So take those out. All right. So that means we've played 18 games against teams that are from good competition.
Starting point is 00:15:05 And we've been down 14 and 12 of those games. And in the first half, all of which were, well, either first half or like first couple minutes a second half. It makes no sense. Nope, can't do it. You just can't do that. I mean, I bet you there are many years where that stat is like, Drew, three, or two, and now it's 12.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I mean, you can't have two of your three games where you get down that much. Now, with that said, it's amazing in those 12 games, we're four and eight, which is kind of a pretty good record when you consider being down that much. But you just can't do that if you want to consistently, Drew, get wins. I know. It is no way to live. It's been fun watching the comebacks, and I'm glad they've won eight out of 10 and turned a corner. But this cannot be the product of Kentucky basketball is just hoping the second half they flip the switch.
Starting point is 00:16:03 And they do a lot. It's fun. But this cannot continue. He has to fix this. We've talked about it for months. No one has the answer. This cannot go on or this will not continue to work. What happened last year, too?
Starting point is 00:16:14 I know. It was just what's happened since he's been here. And you're talking about being down 15. Like even being down eight that many times is a bit. bad. We're talking about being down 15 points. That's crazy for a team that's supposed to be good in Kentucky basketball. But I would note, I am encouraged that I think Florida is now one of the five best teams in the country. And we were in that game. It's not a moral victory. I had that guy called the post-game show, and he was like, you know, Kentucky basketball is now Indiana and
Starting point is 00:16:45 whatever. It's not a moral victory. But it does make me think that in an NCAA tournament, which we'll talk about little later, they can win games that I think if you asked me three or four weeks ago, I would have said they could not win. I now think in the right scenario, they can win them. But if they keep following behind by 15, they'll lose in the first round of the tournament. It won't matter anyway. So Pope's got to get the start of these games better. 8-59-2-80277.274. 274. We will take a break and be right back. KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind.

Starting point is 00:18:25 I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:18:42 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose. On my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. What's up, guys? This is Clever Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliver Show, I'm bringing you. conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:19:43 Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. If you're watching the latest season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, you already know there's a lot to break down. Gorsha accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man. They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew. Pinky has financial issues. I like the bougie style of Housewives show.
Starting point is 00:20:09 I think it looks like it's going to be interesting. On the podcast, Reality with the King, I, Carlos King, recap the biggest moments from your favorite reality shows, including the Real House Wise franchise. the drama, the alliances, and the T, everybody's talking about. As an executive producer in reality television, I'm not just watching it. I understand the game. As somebody who creates shows, I'll even say this. At the end of the day, when people are at home, they want entertainment. To hear this and more, listen to Reality with the King on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Welcome back. It is the Kentucky Slick, Chevy Dealer's. No, it's just KSR. I'm sitting here and looking. The problem was, somebody wrote me and said they didn't put the post game show on the podcast. And then I looked and we did. So I don't know what they're talking about. One person writes, Matt, you mentioned the Lunar New Year and you mentioned Ramadan,
Starting point is 00:21:11 but you didn't mention that it's also Fat Tuesday. And Lent starts tomorrow. You always try to help other cultures but don't think about the Christian culture. No, that one just wasn't on my book, Shannon. I have a book here that has the holidays. It does not have Fat Tuesday. It does tomorrow have Ash Wednesday. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:30 But it does not have that. So maybe it's not as nefarious, Shannon, as people think. It might just be what's on my little book of holidays right here. It's that liberal book you got there. It's what it does. But that is true. I bought the liberal book. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:42 She got the conservative planner. Fat Tuesday. I did. I was going to get the Lee Greenwood plant. And they didn't. They were out. of them. Well, amazing.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Speaking of that, Jesse Jackson died, which I was sad to see. Drew, you and I did our show once in Jesse Jackson Studio. Do you remember that? That's actually my photo
Starting point is 00:22:10 that was on Sports Center with the glasses and the big headphones. That's exactly right. I'm going to say, the very famous one where it looks like Drew is about to land a plane, that picture. Those are Jesse's headphones.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Those are Jesse Jackson. Jackson's headphones. We had to do, this was back before we could take these Comrex units everywhere. And Drew and I were doing a tour around the country. And we got to Chicago. And the only studio they could find us was Jesse Jackson Studio. So Drew and I went into Jesse Jackson Studio. He had these old headphones.
Starting point is 00:22:40 I think he had, Ryan, the same headphones from the, like, from the civil rights movement, from like the ones he used back then because they were huge. And we did the show. And that led us to talk about Jesse Jackson, which led us. to one of Shannon the famous drops in KSR history, right? Yeah, that's right, yeah. Red, yellow, brown, black, and white. Right, that one?
Starting point is 00:23:02 Here it is. There you go. That's right. You remember we used to use that all the time? And you said we lost it. I guess you had to look that up online, right? Yeah, somebody deleted it. You know, we had this big collection of drops over the years,
Starting point is 00:23:19 and I guess some of them got lost throughout the years somehow. Yeah. But you would play that all the time. All the time. If there was like, if we were talking about the color of a, of a team's mascot or something. Or any racial issues. Red, yellow, brown, black and white.
Starting point is 00:23:35 So RIP to Jesse Jackson. He spoke once, Ryan, at Transylvania, when I was in college. And this is kind of a unique part of history, in my history, at least. He spoke at Transylvania. And a fraternity there, the KAs. You know them, Ryan, Kappa Alpha Order. Okay. You ever heard of that?
Starting point is 00:23:57 They do that. Heard of them. Wheat barley alfalfa, give them hell, Kappa Alpha. What a great slogan. It's not a bad slogan. They got in trouble at Trancy. I don't remember what they did, but it was something that people felt was insensitive racially, and it probably was at the time.
Starting point is 00:24:16 And Jesse Jackson was coming, and as their punishment, they had to be the bodyguards for Jesse Jackson's speech. Uh-huh. to security, which I always drew thought was a weird punishment. Yeah. Because it's like, well, how do we know that you're going to be the ones to actually
Starting point is 00:24:35 step up and, you know, but that was, he spoke at transit and he was very good when I was there. Yeah, he gave someone in trouble way too much responsibility. That seems to be a job where they need to. It's like if you got in trouble, it's like, security if you get in trouble. That seems like a weird thing. You're in trouble. You have to
Starting point is 00:24:53 be a fireman tonight. Like, that they need, that's a pretty big duty to provide security. They need training. I don't think we do. Do we do that when people go to prison, then make them policemen? Shannon, when that happens? I don't think so. I don't think so. The punishment is, you may have to take a bullet today, so stand in front of Jesse Jackson. I always thought that was an odd punishment.
Starting point is 00:25:14 But anyway, rest in peace. And there was another famous death, which we'll talk about a little later. Kentucky plays Georgia tonight. Drew, Georgia's leading score has been. out the last two games. Was it Jeremiah Wilkerson? Is that his name? Wilkinson. Is that right? Wilkinson. And he's been out the last two games, but he is playing tonight. So they will come into Rupp at full strength. How do you feel about the game tonight? They're on a pretty big slide after, I mean, they were ranked to start conference play.
Starting point is 00:25:42 I think they picked on an easy schedule. Now they're getting to the hard teams. But surprisingly, they're one of the highest scoring teams in the country. You're not used to hearing that from a Georgia team. Play with a lot of tempo. And then they call themselves the dunk yard dogs. Most of what they do is at the rim. No, they don't. They don't. Yeah, one out of five made baskets is a dunk. That's pretty crazy. Samto... Who calls themselves the dunkyard dogs? They call themselves.
Starting point is 00:26:04 I'm not calling them that. I'm just telling you, when they look in the mirror in the morning, that's what they say to themselves. They say, I'm a dunkyard dog. Yep. But, I mean, one in five made baskets being a dunk, is pretty wild. And Sompto, the big man, who was a former Kentucky commit, he has 30 more dunks than the guy in second
Starting point is 00:26:20 place in the SEC. So, rim protection is a lot of what they do. They're number one in shot blocking and they're number one in dunks. They're going to be all around the rim all night. I believe he played well against us last year too, Sompto. And he was, you know, he was supposed to go here at one point. And I believe when we played down there, Ryan,
Starting point is 00:26:40 I think we got crushed down there last year. Because we had a watch party, I think, at the bar and everybody showed up and I think we got destroyed, if I remember correctly. It was over quickly. Yeah, I forgot the watch party. I remember they played poorly. It was one of the, maybe one of their worst losses of the season. But yeah, we had a watch party that night. We were not doing well.
Starting point is 00:26:56 They also have Blue Cane who had a big game last year. Yeah, they tried to do it on the wing. Blue Kane, who he's back. Oh, I don't like Blue Cane. I haven't seen Georgia play this year. Blue Cane is back? Blue Cane is back. He and Sompto and Wilkinson are the players to know really well. Blue Cane. Yeah, well, still, Kentucky's an eight and a half point favorite. And Ryan, to me, this now is the, you look, with six games to go, this is the one you just
Starting point is 00:27:21 got to have. This in South Carolina. I'll talk about the schedule later, but there's six games. I mean, I think they're all winnable, but two of them, if you want to do what you want to do now this year, you've got to win. And this is one of them. You have to go tonight and you have to take care of business and you have to beat Georgia at home. You have to beat them at home. Both games this week, you're playing teams that are kind of on the downward spiral. You have Georgia tonight and at Auburn on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:27:46 If you're able to lock both of those up, yeah, you definitely put yourself in great position going in the SEC tournament. But Georgia's a team, like Drew said, I remember they beat Arkansas. already in the year. They were rolling there for a while. Be Florida? I think they beat Florida. Didn't they beat Florida there? No, that was Missouri that got Florida. That's an expected. But they were on a roll. They beat Auburn, beat Arkansas,
Starting point is 00:28:06 but they are going the wrong way. Just last Saturday, they went to Oklahoma who isn't very good and got killed. That was when the popcorn got on fire. Yeah. You need to, okay, Shana, we got to play that in the next segment. You got to play the audio of the announcer with the popcorn on fire. It's
Starting point is 00:28:23 great audio that we played on ESPN Sunday. They're announcing and the popcorn machine catches on fire. Blazing fire. By the way, burnt popcorn smells the worst. It does. And it gets stuck in your nose. So it might be stuck in their nose when they play tonight. They might be a little distracted.
Starting point is 00:28:42 T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Our, tonight is our last 9 o'clock game. That'll make Ryan happy. Although I'm not making Ryan stay up and do this game show. I'm doing it.
Starting point is 00:29:01 Thanks, Dad. You know, you, I could stay up for it. It's fine. It'll be a late one. But it is a home game at Rupp. You guys feel good about the crowd for a 9 o'clock game after the team's been playing well? I mean, it's only three home games left, so you need to go while you can. I feel good.
Starting point is 00:29:21 said three games left. There's also double header potential with baseball starting at four today in Lexington. I think we'll see a good crowd with a new excitement. You could do a complete UK day. Oh, yeah. Baseball, KS Bar pregame basketball. And I am. What's the more big blue game than that?
Starting point is 00:29:41 Yeah, perfect. And the weather's going to be great today for baseball's opening day. You know, they tried to keep us from watching them in Greensboro over the weekend. We let us see it on television. So now we can actually go watch them. the lead up to our 9 p.m. game with, I think, is Tom Hart tonight, too. Big day. All right, let's talk about UK baseball for just a second. Beats UNC Greensboro by like a million in all three games.
Starting point is 00:30:02 But Ryan, Tyler Bell, the all-everything player who was supposed to be one of the best players in the country, he gets hurt. They say he's out indefinitely a lot of rumors out there, maybe out for the year. It's a tough, tough loss for this team. The first game of the season, like in the sixth inning, to lose maybe your best player. I hate it for the kid. First game of the year.
Starting point is 00:30:26 He's your leader. They voted him the hardest working player on the team as a freshman last year. And for this guy to come back to Kentucky, try to dedicate himself to be a better pro, going to be in the big league someday. For this to happen to him this year, another shoulder injury. Also, another star player at Kentucky has another shoulder injury. That's three of them. But it's still random, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:30:48 But that's three of them in two years for major. U.K. players. I mean, not just secondary U.K. players. Major players. Lamont Butler, Jalen Lowe, and now the star baseball player, all on the shoulder. Just bad luck, right? I mean, I don't think you can blame the strength and conditioning coaches on this. It's just things that happen.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Now, they did have a positive stat that's crazy, and I need you baseball guys to tell me how crazy this is. All right. Over the course of the three games, Kentucky attempted 23 steals, and they got all 23. They
Starting point is 00:31:21 stole 23 bases on 23 attempts in three games. It's got to be a record. That has to be a record, right? Either this team is going to steal a million bases this year or the catcher at UNC Greensboro is the worst player. Maybe he had a shorter injury. He can throw the ball, you know? But is that not, I mean, Ryan, you were a base stealer.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Is that not one of the crazier stats ever? I just think about that seven or eight steals a game. that's amazing just in one game to steal seven or eight bases in one game. They did it three games in a row. Of course, I love it. I love everything about it. Maybe they finally took my advice and, you know, going to run the bases a little more,
Starting point is 00:32:01 steal some more bases. That's how baseball is won. What do you mean? What do you mean? What do you mean? I've been pounding that drum for years that teams don't steal enough bases anymore, man, run. Put the pressure on the defense to make a play.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Have you, Drew, do you remember him pounding the table that Kentucky should steal more bases? I don't have like an instance that comes to mine right away, but I'm still running through the timeline of Ryan Limon. It might pop up, but not right now. No, I don't remember that. So if you said that, you said that they listened to you. Have you been telling Nick Mingey own that? Well, I don't remember you ever.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Like when he did those motivational Mondays, Shannon, do you remember him saying steal more bases during that period of time? Ryan never cut off a motivational speech to talk about stolen bases ever. And I feel like isn't Nick Mingeon known for stealing bases? Isn't that his thing? Yeah. Yeah. They're very aggressively.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Look, I've left him... That's like his thing. Why are you trying to take credit for it? I've left him some messages. I even sent him a fax trying to you need to steal more bases. They did... So you're going to take credit. For Nick Mingeone
Starting point is 00:33:08 playing the style of baseball that I think he's played from day one. I think he studied some Kentucky Wesleyan tape back in the day when I stole five bases against Lindsey Wilson in one game. Do you think you could maybe send him a cameo to encourage him to still more bases. That's actually a great idea. I think I will. I feel like since he stole 23.
Starting point is 00:33:26 I feel like they're on the right path. I just feel bad for the catcher here. I mean, they're picking on the poor guy. He clearly can't throw the ball from home plate to second base to get anybody out. I mean, if you're Greensboro. You think it had to be that the catcher was there. It's terrible. You steal the base off the pitcher, though, not necessarily the catcher.
Starting point is 00:33:42 I'm just, I'm trying to play with Ryan's suggestion. I'm looking last year in Kentucky led the SEC by over 30 steel attempts. I mean, they're already doing quite a bit of. stealing as it is. You want them to do more? You literally are jumping on and taking credit for something that I think Min Gione's been doing for years. Yeah, I think he finally
Starting point is 00:34:00 saw my messages and that fax I sent over like years ago. Like, hey, we know what? We leave the SEC. We need to leave the nation. We need to steal more bases. Interesting. Okay. So you think it's not because of the catcher. It's because of the pitchers? Are you still the bases off the pitcher? Not the catcher. Got to get a good jump. The catcher has a weak arm and that doesn't help. True. It doesn't
Starting point is 00:34:18 help. I just wonder why Greensboro. didn't put a new catcher in. Anyway. Well, Ron didn't tell him to. Ryan's got to get the plan and get it out there, I love that Ryan is, I had no idea. He played such a crucial role in this record. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:34:34 Dave. Dave, go ahead, Dave. Hey, just one more point on the Florida game. I know you've already finished the recap, but the play where he pulled him down by the shirt and tripped him. Yes. If they were going to review that call, yeah, you said that they couldn't change the call, but it wasn't that they couldn't change the call. They didn't call the flagrant, which it definitely was by the letter of the law there.
Starting point is 00:35:08 No, wait a minute. I thought they called the foul on us, right? They did. But when they did the review, they could have called the flagrant on the Florida player. Yeah, I don't think they can. I don't, I think, and I could be wrong about this. But I think if they don't call the foul on the floor, I don't think they're allowed to change it unless it's like a, what do you call it?
Starting point is 00:35:33 Like unless it's a physical harm. Well, yes, but I don't, I mean, you may be right. Because you're right. It is when it's a flagrant, but I always consider it like a fight. I don't know that you can just call an in-ball flagrant if you didn't call the foul. Either way, it's a terrible call. I'm with you. Definitely met the criteria for a flagrant one.
Starting point is 00:35:57 Yeah. But it was like during the game, it wasn't after the whistle, right? So it was, I don't know what the word. Yeah, that's a momentum killer, too. We had momentum at the time. It was, I agree. Yeah, it was a terrible call. I appreciate the call.
Starting point is 00:36:12 It was a terrible call. And, Drew, it was a momentum killer. I mean, you know, they called that foul on Diabate. Diabate gets pulled to the ground. and it ends up being a foul on him. And then I think the fact that it was reviewed just makes people even matter, but you took the time to look at it and then didn't change it. It's a good home whistle.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Everybody should have a good home whistle. It makes me mad that Lexington does not have one. That's a call that we wouldn't. Florida gets at home. If we're flipped, we wouldn't get that at home. Do you feel like we don't get the home whistle other teams do? Every team thinks their team, every fan thinks their team is wronged. But I think it's a fair complaint for Kentucky fans to think that the
Starting point is 00:36:50 refs aren't helping us out at home a little bit. Okay. I'm not saying you're wrong. It does feel like to me, I don't feel like, it does feel like to me that we, the negative whistle we get on the road is greater than the positive we get it rough.
Starting point is 00:37:07 But that makes me sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it does feel like it. Like, you know, I felt it, I certainly felt it in that game. Think about the Arkansas game, right? I mean, with all, with all that happened during that. That felt like the momentum of the crowd carry Doug Shows to go down in direction.
Starting point is 00:37:24 And I don't always feel like we get that at Rupp, although I'm sure other teams think we do. I've always felt like the home whistle is real, but I agree with you guys. It's just not as evident in Rupp Arena. I think because the refs, they walk into Rupp, they know it's a special place. Just like when players walk into Rupp, they know it's a special place to get to play in, so they want to be, they don't want to show any favoritism at all to the home team.
Starting point is 00:37:45 But I do think the home whistle is real, though, on the road in other places. Well, I think the, I think refs get into the energy of the game. And the reality is if you make a call when the energy is good for the home team, if you make a call against the other team, everybody cheers. And like you're kind of a star for a moment. And I don't know if there's been research, but I have to think there's, there has been research, Shannon, that you get better calls at home. I just have to think that's true.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Yeah, it does feel like they get caught up in the momentum of the excitement and energy. and it's almost like they're cheering for them or they feel like they're at least cheering for them. And especially back when they used to call a lot of charges. Yeah. Right, because they love to gyrate and throw their hips and, you know, yeah, yeah. It's a Pat Adams game tonight. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Oh, we have Pat Adams tonight? Oh, good. Here we go. Who's next? By the way, I don't know the guy's name. We know Doug Shows and Pat Adams' name, but the guy that we had Saturday might be my least favorite SEC official. Is his name core?
Starting point is 00:38:45 Is it Jones? Something Jones? I'm not sure. I think his last name's Jones. Was it Chuck Jones? Jones. That dude, I feel like hates us more than anybody. It's just we don't know his name.
Starting point is 00:38:57 I remember it because it's Jones. But every time I see that guy, I'm not happy. Bluegrass is next. Bluegrass. You got about a minute. Go ahead. I hope this take is good, man, because I kept getting cut off. But anyway, I just be quick.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Haven't you guys noticed that we were having some trouble with really speedy guards, man. I mean, we've got good guard defenders, but we're having some trouble with the speed. Like the Vanderbilt guy kind of diced us up. Lee was too quick for us. I'm not saying our guards can't defend. I'm just saying it looks like that quickness. That's my first thing. It's got a little bit of, like, we need some help on that, and I don't know what we can do. And my second point is, don't go ahead. No, go ahead. No, I go ahead. No, I go ahead. The second point, the second, the second, the second, the second,
Starting point is 00:39:47 point is Chandler, I think he might be better at guarding a three, and just let OA hit the two just for a little bit more quickness. Because look at the job he did on A-Ment. He did good on Hugh the second half. We could do. We could. Well, it's hard to do because you got to guard, because the Florida had three bigs. And always our best chance at having a guard to guard a big.

This is Jane's Addiction. Yeah, we saw that story I told
Starting point is 00:44:19 about when I had to go to the Metallica concert by myself, and then I lost you and Perrin. You remember that story? Yeah, louder than life. These guys played too, right before Metallica. That's right. Yep, that was before they punched each other in the face on stage and broke up. That's right.
Starting point is 00:44:35 Yes, but this was at larger than life. Yeah. And it was, I saw James, I thought they were great. I thought Metallica was great. Yeah, they were. I just was by myself and, you know. We'll get you back out there again. The lineup comes out.
Starting point is 00:44:49 Monday for this. Do you know what is tomorrow? No, I don't know. They don't tell us anything. So bourbon and beyond and larger than life. They're coming out soon? Louder than life next Monday. Burbin and beyond is tomorrow at noon right after the show. Yeah. Okay. Always do it after the show. I don't understand that. One person writes, Matt, I do agree teams get home whistles.
Starting point is 00:45:09 Who do you think gets the best one? Well, Duke gets the best. Duke's home whistle is crazy. And it's It's less now than it was during the Coach K years, but it still exists. And then I think the best home whistle actually, Duke is the most consistent, but the best home whistle, Drew, is Kansas on Monday night. Oh, yeah. Kansas is easy the answer for me. On Monday nights, Kansas gets the craziest homewitch.
Starting point is 00:45:37 I will never bet against Kansas on Monday night because they get the craziest whistle of all time. Yeah, those are the easy answers. I'd even give Kansas a slight nod. I can't think of an exact moment, but I feel like I've been watching games. There's just been some blatant calls. It's right at the end of the game, too. I mean, Kansas on Monday night is the easiest bet in sports. I'm trying to play it back.
Starting point is 00:46:01 I was there. The year Kentucky played there and went to overtime. Ulyss was the point guard. Didn't we get kind of hosed at the end there on something, or am I making that up in my head? I remember a tight game, and it felt like at the end, they got one of those bounces that was pretty questionable right in front of us. You know, I don't remember.
Starting point is 00:46:16 You know what? I think I think you're right. Sounds right. I know we played them really close there. That was the Ulys Murray game, right? Uh-huh. I feel like something happened there that really showed off the Kansas. There was something that happened in that game, and I don't remember what it was,
Starting point is 00:46:31 but you are exactly right about that. So maybe somebody can remember. But we did get host at the very end. We were very mad. I do remember that. One person writes, Matt, one of things I've never understood about Jesse Jackson is why he and Obama never got along. Yeah, that's an interesting thing.
Starting point is 00:46:47 They didn't like each other, really, even though they both were, like, black leaders from Chicago. But I always thought, Shannon, sometimes you can be, like, somebody can be, like, too much like you. Yeah. Do you think maybe it was like a robbery or something? I think it was, you know, I'm the guy here. He wanted to be the first black president than Obama did.
Starting point is 00:47:06 Yep. So a little professional jealousy sounds like. Yeah. I mean, that happens. You know, that can happen. Ryan Lemon, you've seen that in our world where people have like a jealousy that leads to them being kind of not getting along, right? Yeah, people are human sometimes. I remember Jesse Jackson who ran for president like twice in the 80s, it seems like.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Keep Hope Alive. That was the big slogan. Yeah, he did. And at one point was a real contender one of those years. I think so, too. We have to talk about Obama and the alien, Shannon, but I'm going to wait to do that. Yeah, I heard what he said. Because when I saw it, I thought, uh-oh, I'm going to have the answer for this, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Then he clarified. And then he, well, he did. And thankfully, because I was worried about it. When I just saw the clip, I thought, uh-oh, Shannon's not going to let me live this now. You should still be worried about it. You still said it. All right, we'll talk about it. We won't spoil.
Starting point is 00:47:57 We're going to do that to start the second hour. Well, we do have to talk about Obama and the aliens because it almost, well, it made my argument tougher for at least 24 hours. Yeah. Who's next? Let's go to Bryce. Bryce. Bryce, go ahead, Bryce. Hey guys, love the show.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Quick question. Have you all seen circling around on Twitter last night about Tyron Stokes and how Kansas might be drawing a line right now with a Nike deal? Have you seen anything about that? So I did see that there was someone tweeted out. And Drew, you may have to clarify for me what I heard and what's reality, because I wasn't online a ton last night. I heard that there was an account that said that Tyron Stokes, Kentucky, had re-gotten momentum. That's the number one player in the country. And that Kansas, for whatever reason, it might not be working out, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:48:50 But then I was told that the guy who did the accounts like a 17-year-old kid in Indiana, and people didn't understand why they were listening to him. Is that true, Drew? I mean, who is that guy that wrote that? I didn't recognize that. There was something behind a paywall, and I'm already out of paywall money. I have too many paywall. I'm paying for. So I didn't see the full quote. But my
Starting point is 00:49:08 understanding is the new kind of development is Kansas is still the leader, but the Stokes are like, all right, let's get this done. If not, we're going to reach out to other people, see if they're ready to get something done. So it's kind of like they're putting pressure on Kansas to meet the number, I guess,
Starting point is 00:49:24 and get this over with. If not, they are going to re-intertain some, or entertain some other places they were considered before if Kansas keeps dragging their feet. Yeah, so I don't know the answer to your question, sir. For me, that story all comes down to who is the person that wrote it. And I don't know this person.
Starting point is 00:49:42 I think their name was like Mike Vernon. And I don't know who that is. Yes, it was. But somebody told me that's like a 17-year-old kid in Indiana. So it doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about. There are a lot of young people. Like when Evan Daniels was in college, he was killing it and he was in college. So I'm not saying he doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:50:00 But like, for me, just because I see a story that's on like an Instagram, UK page, I need to know who the person was that wrote it. And since I don't know that guy, I can't really say one way or the other. I got to, yeah, Kansas fans are actually going crazy. They were like, we don't want him anyway. So I was just like, everybody always says they don't want him. People want him. He's number one player in America.
Starting point is 00:50:25 Appreciate the call. You know, in a freshman class that is considered to be much more down than most freshman classes, he's the number one player and he's the real. Now, he comes with a lot of, like, he's, He's got, if he comes here, I mean, I think he's going to go to Kansas. But if he comes here, like, people are going to have to be, like, he comes with a lot of baggage. But we don't have any recruits, Ryan. So, you know, I don't know if you're a beggar if you can get too picky as to who you get.
Starting point is 00:50:57 I think there is some baggage. I think there are some personality issues that come into play. But you're right. When the number one player in the country has a chance, you have a chance to get him. You have to go get him. You have to overlook that. And hopefully you can work with him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:08 And, you know, if Kansas wants him, I don't know. I don't know if we're in a position to go. Well, we're too good for that. True. But again, I don't know how much I believe that story. Because I don't know who that is. Maybe he's right, though. Like, again, I just don't know the kids.
Starting point is 00:51:21 So I can't, I can't say. 859-280-2287. Text machine, 772-745-254. We'll come back, take a break. And I'm going to see if Shannon has one on me on aliens. We'll be right back. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
