Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories,

This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, Hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Quarterback on office blue 42. Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifford Show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam?
Starting point is 00:01:44 It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was hiring. You just understood. That's how personal it got.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming until he's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just like this review from Joshua, who says this about his experience with Stockton. They were super professional. Always answered my questions I had and streamlined the process. I've even used Stockton Mortgage myself on my own home loan. for your home loan needs stockton.com and click get started stockton mortgage nmLS 8259 equal housing lender nmLS consumer access dot org welcome to hour two of kentucky sports radio presented by stockton mortgage now here's matt jones welcome back hour number two kutki sports radio 859 2807 27274 75254 one person writes matt this show it's a little bit depressing nothing you guys have done, it just feels like the facts are depressing. They are. I mean, they are.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Like, this is what happens at the end of every year that doesn't go as you want. Like, you know, it's hard to be happy, go lucky when things are not happy or lucky. So, but I mean, we'll get over it. We'll keep going. You know, I don't want, this show is not going to just turn into a bitch and moan fest. I don't think people want to hear that. But it's also, I think, important for people to understand the issues at play. you know, I got a text message during the break from someone who works at UK who said to me,
Starting point is 00:04:11 Matt, keep up with what you're doing. The morale in the athletics department is the lowest it's ever been. And I think that's right. Now, part of that is there are loyal people to Mitch Barnhart kind of sad to see that he's leaving. There are people who worry that forces within the university that will be more negative are going to start running things. And then there are just those who just kind of don't like what's going on. But sometimes the only way you can have change is when you acknowledge when things are bad.
Starting point is 00:04:46 And because Mitch is leaving, there's going to be a change. So let's just hope it's a good one. Yep. And as you all said, we need someone with some juice in here and some excitement and want to try some new things. Mitch was a big reactor to everything. That's how we fell behind an NIL, which I think hurt Stoops and Cal. Whoever's next.
Starting point is 00:05:01 I hope they come in with some ideas and trying some new stuff and try to get this place to having fun, having some success again. Let's talk a little non-U.K. stuff from the tournament real quick. You happy for Ricky Petino? Actually, I am. I can't believe I have switched to flip the switch that I have with him, but I am not only for him, I am pulling for him to win it all now. Come on, he's got to beat Duke.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Be Duke in Washington, D.C. How about the guy getting, didn't make a shot the whole game and gets the winning layup? And they call him church bells. Called his own number. Like he went to Patino and wanted to make the, call that play for me. I've hit a shot all game, but I'll hit this one. You like the nickname Church Bells? Love it. Yeah, I don't know how you get that, but I love the nickname. I don't either. I also love Patino saying that he wants to get a buzzer beater over Duke next week so he can avenge that later shot.
Starting point is 00:05:45 I've got to, I'm pulling for St. John's. I'm even thinking about going that Friday. Are you really? Well, I mean, think about it. That's a final four in Washington, D.C. No doubt. Duke and Patino, Yukon and Michigan State. Awesome. I mean, that's better than what the final four will be. won't it? Sure it will. Like that's all. Like when are you going to get four coaches? I mean, Shire's new in his career,
Starting point is 00:06:06 but when are you going to get four coaches like that in one building? It is. That's a final four. It'll be a better setting than the final four. You should go if you'll credential me, but I'm going to go, I'm going to go Shannon. Matt Jones,
Starting point is 00:06:17 ESPN Radio. They're going to be like, what are you doing for ESPN Radio? Here, well, nothing, but you know what? Don't ask, don't ask, don't tell. Those four letters will get you in anywhere. That's right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:26 No, I will be crazy. I was rooting for Rick. A, I don't want Kansas to have any success. And I have them beating Duke in my bracket. But my favorite moment of that game is when they made the buzzer beater, Rick just don't cold walks towards self. I don't get that, man. Everybody was like, look what a G.
Starting point is 00:06:40 He doesn't get excited. Man, you got to, now he did pump his fist after. What about Florida losing? Happy? Very happy, yes, because I don't know, Todd Golden's a snot-nosed-thead. I thought Ben McCoham and he might go to blows there. A lot of F-bombs going their way. I thought Hurley Mick Cronin would be the one to watch.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Those two were going at it more than those guys. Does anyone like Todd Golden? Like anyone? For Florida to lose? You like him. He is getting a little over the top, though. He's getting into Hurley territory, which I think is too much. Yeah, I mean, I do think you got to slow down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:07:17 I'm losing him a little bit. He's fighting everybody. I like the fire, and I even like when he tells opposing fans to sit down and shut up. I like having a villain, but he is getting a little too much. It'll be an interesting year for him next year because he's going to lose that core group that has been there the last two years. But to lose in Tampa as a number one seat, that was a big loss
Starting point is 00:07:35 for Florida. How about Iowa, by the way? That guy was a D2 coach like two years ago. But he said he won a D2 title? He went to Drake, then went to Drake, had a good couple years there, and then, and this is first year at Iowa, I think, yeah. And as good as Florida's front court is, we figured
Starting point is 00:07:51 that back court would eventually get him in Lee, not the best. I mean, even if he had it off that pass, I don't think there was enough time for Halk to lay it up. I mean, he just dribbled to the baseline and lost time. Yeah, so that's good. We listened a little bit to the UCon thing. Are you four Nebraska, Shannon, having never won a tournament game? They say they may have 40,000 people in Houston next week. They had so many people at that Vandy game. It felt like they were playing the game at Nebraska's home court. But yeah, what about that shot?
Starting point is 00:08:20 Did you think it was? It was halfway down. It was almost another Oway shot that Tanner just missed their at the bouncy ball, kept it from going out. I think you're right. Yeah. I guess I'll pull for Nebraska. Can we also note Ryan Lemon is in the 99.5 percentile on brackets on ESPN? Wow. All know we're over here.
Starting point is 00:08:41 I filled it out in like three minutes. Maybe that's what that's the key. I think the thing with you. Don't think. Don't think. Don't think. Just fill it out. Natural brain.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Remember I tell you don't try to be funny? Natural brain. Don't try to think. What's my other brain called if it's not natural? Whatever comes out of your mouth usually. just natural brain natural brain is your is your is your foul floor like still alive do you have a chance to go on a okay he's got a chance to like he's like on our ESPN people contest it's like a hundred different ESPN personalities you would be in first what yes why didn't I enter that contest yeah I don't
Starting point is 00:09:17 know too late there's one perfect bracket on that bracket uh challenge on ESPN there's one one still perfect yeah one one guy still left it's pretty impressive if you're still perfect you'd have a chance. How bad do you want Arizona to beat Arkansas? I am all in on Arkansas. What? I'm all in on Arizona. There we go, that brain.
Starting point is 00:09:40 That's the brain. Who do you want to learn again? I tried to give you a compliment. Yeah. And then that's what you do. That's the Ryan Limit experience. Let's go to Mark. Go ahead, Mark.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. Church bells only plays on Sunday. That's the nickname. Oh, okay. Church bells only play on Sunday. I like that. Okay, gotcha.
Starting point is 00:10:06 So that's the nickname. But talking about UK basketball and what's going on and some stuff, just had some conversations with some people. And, you know, the kids are kind of frustrated. A lot of them want to go to Duke because of the experience in Kansas because of the experience. And what they're talking about is, is, you know, when you play in Rupp, we got the eruption zone, and that's really it.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And then you got the eruption zone, which is on our end in the second half. Yes. They can't go out and do anything because everybody knows who they are, and they're all under 21. So they can't go anywhere and do anything and, you know, get into a little bit of trouble. So we're having to pay these guys a lot more money to come here. And then the other thing is nobody's back at Wildcat Lodge. So they're not together anymore except for basketball practice, kind of like a high school team. You know, at basketball practice, when they see them at school, they're there.
Starting point is 00:11:05 But they're not together after hours. No, they're not. They were up to about three or four years ago. They were together. And this is all part of the environment around. Go ahead. Go ahead. No, that was going to say.
Starting point is 00:11:20 The whole point of what I'm talking about, about the overall leadership. is. No one has taken the things you're talking about seriously. No one has really set and thought about how do I make Rupp Arena better? Like how do I make it to where that environment, A, is inviting to fans, B, makes players want to come here. The question has always been, how much money can we make? Like, that's been the question. And when I hear Eli Capiludo say, cuts, more revenue, that's, you know, that is all the part and parcel of make money and that and I think that gets to what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Build your own gym. You control the revenue that way. You do. That's true. And you could build it the way you wanted. I appreciate the call. You know, these are little things. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:14 And I use them as an example, not to complain. I know it sounds like it, but to just give me an example. Let's take Mario. Mario has a big social media following. If you walk on campus with Mario, if we go to a game, the second most known media member probably besides me is Mario. Yeah. With the younger people.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Oh, no doubt. All right. The amount of hassle over the years UK has given Mario, when he tries to do things at games with students, is crazy to me. You have one media member in this entire state who relates to the students and who the students like. They have kicked him out of the gym before, escorted him out once,
Starting point is 00:13:03 which they did apologize for, but it was ridiculous. They just constantly are trying to stop him from doing something that ultimately helps them. It helps the university. But all they see is we own everything that happens in this building. Mario is costing this money. Mario out. Instead of going, we've got this dude who gets our students involved. Why? Because they don't think like that. They just think money, money, money, money. And the key to money is keep everyone, everyone should make no dollar unless it's us. And that's a terrible mindset. And I see it with him. But it applies to a million other things. Why are we watching? all these commercials during March Madness
Starting point is 00:13:55 and the Kentucky logo is not anywhere because we ask for more money than these other schools and these other schools get the benefit of Duke and Yukon being on every commercial. There's value in that. Of course there is. There's value in kids. A lot of kids, the only time they watch college basketball
Starting point is 00:14:13 is the NCAA tournament. And if you watch it during the NCAA tournament, you'd think Duke and Yukon are the place to be because they're in every commercial. Yep. And we're sitting there going, we're going to need $150,000. to use your, like this, it all, the chickens come home to roost after a while. Yep. And I've brought this up for a while and it's gotten better, but there were several years where
Starting point is 00:14:33 I go to websites with hats or t-shirts. They have all the colleges and I've DM them like, hey, you're going to get Kentucky stuff? Probably not. They're the hardest school to work with. It's like you got 110 schools, but not Kentucky. That's improved a little, but that was a problem for a long time. All merchandise people will tell you Kentucky is the hardest school to work with in the country. And that's why, again, it's gotten better.
Starting point is 00:14:53 But it's been hard to get those cool, like, throwback or retro things because we wouldn't do it. And, again, I hope that is a change. But all of those are, like, little things that showcase, I said to one of the UK media people, I can go to the Super Bowl and get better access than you will give me at a UK scrimmage. Fax. Crazy. That's crazy to me that you guys, like, Ryan and Shannon didn't get credentialed for the SEC tournament,
Starting point is 00:15:27 and Ryan sat next to the scorekeeper at the NCAA tournament. What is wrong with you people? But that's just how they look at it. On three brought a bunch of all, like all their websites to Nashville last year, and we had a big dinner, and you had to sit with people you didn't know. So I sat with the Florida site, the Alabama site, and they're talking about going to practices, and I was like, I haven't been to a practice in five years.
Starting point is 00:15:47 They're like, what do you mean? You don't get to go to a practice. Pat Kelsey invited me, Shannon, to a Louisville practice. Yeah, that's unbelievable. I want you to think about that. Pat Kelsey was like, man, you ought to come watch us practice.
Starting point is 00:16:01 We can't even get to a Kentucky practice. What? That's crazy. Jay and Lyndon, go ahead. Shout out, Mario. Hey,
Starting point is 00:16:12 Todd Golden is your buddy in college. It starts fights and disappears when something goes. That's a really good call. You're right. Hey, I got two quick things, and I got a favorite ask of you. first, I'm sick of the national media
Starting point is 00:16:25 telling me my expectations or two. I agree. And Matt, you touched on this, and I don't know if you have any insight in this. The difference in Pope's interviews this year compared to last year are so stark. Last year, I thought he was the smartest guy on the planet.
Starting point is 00:16:40 It's like a hostage situation this year. It does feel like that. Jay, I just go watch the videos of Mark Pope during the season in post-game press conferences last. year, but this year. It's like there's two different people. Here's my favor. I want you this summer to do a podcast on NIL and its whole relationship. I follow stuff and I don't even understand it, Matt.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Yeah, I will. I will. I'm trying to be fair. I'll be honest. And I appreciate the call. I'm trying to be fair to an entity in JMI that really isn't fair to me. I'm trying to be fair because I don't want to blame things without really knowing. And I'm spending this spring after this portal season trying to learn so that when I say something, I'm educated completely on it. But I will do that. We need to do it. And on the national media part, I don't want to hear anyone that's not a Kentucky fan tell me what Kentucky fans should expect. Right.
Starting point is 00:17:42 I don't care. Like the quote from the CBS guy, Kentucky fans, just shut up. You don't know. I don't tell North Carolina fans what to expect. I don't need people telling Kentucky fans what they should want. That dude's probably never even been on UK. Like, stop it. Yeah, I mean, it's different here.
Starting point is 00:18:00 We inherited this. It's our lives here. We'll decide how we want to live. I don't listen to any Kentucky fan's opinion about expectations. I'm not listening to the guy who has no connection to it. Big news for our listeners in North Carolina. Your team lost. But Cornbread's award-winning seltzers are on the shelves.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Raspberry limeade, blueberry breeze, peach tea, which rinds. stole four of them from my house. Go to cornbreadhimp.com. It's cornbreadhemp.com. Get yourself rest and relaxation with cornbread hemp. Cornbread hemp grown for the good life. We'll take a break. Be right back.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Highlights are trending. Opinions are flying. And nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo. Every episode, we're cutting through the noise.

And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you here on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:20:04 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app.

Starting point is 00:20:36 This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office, Blue, 42. A rep. My mom, I want you. shoot away better. What?
Starting point is 00:20:52 Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Cliverts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, I'm Jared Adano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than that. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream of chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is Help for Mare. Hippocrat, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Listen to Help from Hypocrite as part of the Mike Cultura Podcast Network available on the IFAR Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back, Techiesports Radio, 859-280287. Text Machine 772-744-552524. Folks writing in, a lot of interesting comments, actually, of people with their own personal experiences. One said, Merson says, Matt, I blame a lot of our environment on our studio. Our students are not very into it.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I'll take up for the students. Our students are fine. The issue is not the students. You have to make the student. Like, you got to help. Complaining about the students is sort of like, I listened to Pope twice during this last week and complain about modern media. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Maybe you have a point. Maybe you don't, but like this is the world you're in. So the question is how do you best utilize it? Right. Our students are, like all college students, Are they distracted by their phones? Sure. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:22:56 These other schools have students distracted by their phones and they got great environments. So what do they do? Right. We stick our students in a little pin right behind the bench. We put the rest of them in these corner seats and then we don't really do it. And when they try to bring in fun signs or do something, they have them take them from them. Right. What do you expect?
Starting point is 00:23:17 I mean, like you ask that you make that job hard to be a, student fan, then you're not going to get the reaction. All I know is when we get away from Rupp and we get away from what UK athletics controls, we actually have some pretty damn good environments. Britchstone Arena, I know got killed there by and Zagga. The moment we get away from you all being in charge, we're good, right? Y'all didn't have much time to have that Pope Press conference pretty awesome, right? When KSR goes places, we have no problem getting crowds. We have no problem having raucous environments. You know, again, no offense.
Starting point is 00:23:56 Go to an official B Kentucky pregame pep rally. Seriously, just do this sometime. Come to the SEC tournament. Come to the KSR pregame show. And then walk down the street and go to the official UK pep rally. Tell me which one's more fun. Not even close. Not even close.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Not even close. The one in St. Louis. God love them. but what are you doing? You have a basketball goal little children playing in like two horns. French horns? What kind of horns are talking here? So this is all part of you.
Starting point is 00:24:33 You got engaged with the fans. Curtis, go ahead and Curtis. Yes, sir. Yesterday was probably one of the most horrible defeats we've had since we lost to Wisconsin and whenever that was, 2016. team. But Mark Pope is a great person. He ought to be a youth minister, not a coach. He's not going to get any better. If he hadn't played at Kentucky, if he played at Valpo or Purdue and won a championship,
Starting point is 00:25:04 he wouldn't be back next year. And we're just going to keep him. It's horrible. Well, I appreciate the call. Let's do this. It's Curtis. We let Curtis do that. I got a bunch of people on here. Let's go through here and I'll do, you get 30 seconds to say what you think about this without Matt Jones or Ryan Lemon or Drew Franklin. I like it. You can just say it unless I have to cut you off because of whatever reason. All right. Let's do this, Shannon. You're ready? Let's go. 30. You get the clock for each of these people. Okay. Ready? Chris, go. Okay, everybody calmed down in the state. I don't think the media covered this enough, guys.
Starting point is 00:25:47 And that last caller was a perfect example. Take Caleb Williams off of North Carolina. Take Condor off of Florida. Claimants, we forget, was a potential lottery pick. So we've got to look back and say what teams could have performed. I think Polk deserves a Mulligan. I mean, we lost our starting point guard. That's it.
Starting point is 00:26:12 One person might respond. Iowa State lost their best player. and just by 20, but I'm not doing that. Give everybody their time. We're just going to give everybody their time. Yes. David, go, David. 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Very frustrated. Okay, go, David. Okay, I just want to say I'm very frustrated with Pope, and I don't know if he's the guy. I will give him next year, but if he doesn't improve next year, he's out. He should be out. All right. David, there you go. Denise, go, 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Hey, I agree with it. The university needs to take a look and look up. If you don't change, you get stagnant and you die. And as far as Mark Pope, he's a great guy. But we rushed. We rushed to choose the coach. Just because you're a basketball player and you win a national championship does not make you qualified to coach basketball.
Starting point is 00:27:12 And there was no excitement in that game yesterday, not by our Wildcats. No excitement. Mike go Mike I've never been as most forced frustrated in the world there's no accountability there's you know players doing I mean 20 turnovers Mark post and on the sidelines I didn't see any any emotion in him I didn't see any coaching in him I saw him trying to be a cheerleader even times we were but what those what those players need is accountability and they need they need to when they do something wrong they need someone to get in their face and hold him accountable for it.
Starting point is 00:27:52 He's not the guy. Joe. Matt, Mama Stokes, we love you. You don't want to go to Kansas on an airplane. Comes election soon as you can drive. And quickly, Matt, I am a liberal athletic director. I am ready for a liberal athletic director. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Goodbye. Adam! So, the fact that anybody, you know, who would blame the students is crazy. You know, they, they came up with that structure. When Petino was here, fans were on the sidelines, and it was awesome. It was rocking.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Then they limit the number of students to get more money, and then they say they need more money. Like, it's ridiculous. Appreciate it. So there you go. That's six straight calls, and I'll do this again in the next hair. I just, you know, it ain't just us. Are you all right? Good. Deskis falling apart.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Just don't break things. I didn't really move. That just fell into me. The desk just fell. Something underneath it. All right. We'll take 859-280-2-8287. We'll let some more folks go. Also talk about the women's team plays at 5 o'clock against West Virginia. Yes. Chance to move to the Sweet 16. They try a big game for them tonight.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Huge game. We'll be right back. KSR. T.J. Smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. He'll make them pay. Now, more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan said something during the break that I'm sorry if I'm just distracted this segment just you know guys talking yeah well let's not do that again I had a good healthy laugh on
Starting point is 00:29:35 that did that was one of those true story very few times it takes your legs out one person writes Matt do you think there will be changes in our coaching staff I have no idea Jack Pilgrim certainly thinks so I mean Jack Pilgrim said he thinks what three to four assistance he wrote that on the board this morning three to four assistants I mean worrisome going into portal season. Yeah. No GM. Three to four assistance leaving.
Starting point is 00:30:03 You know, they're going to have that documentary in two weeks. I don't know how much they'll show. I forgot about that. Yeah. Are you excited to watch that? Oh, yes. I want to know what happened at the Louisville game. Please include that in the documentary.
Starting point is 00:30:13 You know, they're not going to show any of that, though. Like, the stuff we want to see is not going to be in there. Like, I want to know what happened in the Louisville game. Yes. I want to know why for a few weeks it seemed like they wanted to be. in different cities than each other. I hope they have the clip of the Auburn when he's in the hallway talking about the mother
Starting point is 00:30:30 cheated us. I want to see what the three to four, why the three to four assistants were leaving. This is just not been a cohesive anything. Got better as year went on, but it's not... Do you and I talked on the post game show? It was just an odd season. It's an odd year from start
Starting point is 00:30:46 to finish. Just an odd year. It really all started with the you know, what did he say? We talked about the Louisville locker room before. What did Mark do before the game that he said he screwed up on? Yeah. It's about flipping a switch or something. Yeah, I mean, that's one of those fascinating what ifs.
Starting point is 00:31:04 You hear like seven different answers. I've never really gotten a straight answer. Me neither. And we know of at least twice Rick Petino had to call him and be like, what are you doing? Yeah. I mean, Rick Petino called, I mean, there's, I know a person who knows Mark very well that said he had a couple times during the year that people were like, dude, what is happening with you right now? nobody really knows the answer. So, yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:29 I mean, I feel like I say I don't know a lot, but I really, I don't know. But part of it is also a well-run organization understands that, like, they have to get stuff out to the public. This has become so shut off. We've talked about this. Yeah. Everything coming from basketball or athletics is silent. And silence leads to the void filled by rumor. and it's hard to know what rumor is true, right?
Starting point is 00:31:57 I didn't see that coming from him or this program. Let's go back to what, let me just go back to when things were rolling. Let me just explain how things worked. From 2010 to 2017, on basketball, John Calipari disliked Jerry Tipton in the local media. And he also had people nationally he disliked. He disliked Pat 40, he disliked Jeff Garvey. Goodman, he disliked these handful of people.
Starting point is 00:32:26 So he wanted his narrative out in the public. And so he did it various ways. If he wanted Kentucky fans to get information, my phone would ring at any time of night. I would see the name come up. I knew it was him. And I was like, here we go, an hour. Now, I loved it because, like, he was fun to talk to. But I knew.
Starting point is 00:32:46 And then he would go, you know, you ought to say this. You ought to say this. You ought to say this. He was getting a narrative out there. Sure. And sometimes I would say it. I wouldn't. It depends. But, you know, then if he wanted a national thing out, he would call Mike DeCorsi or Andy
Starting point is 00:33:01 Katz. Those were these guys back then. And same thing, right? If Mike DeCorese or Andy Kat said it, you knew where he'd come from. Then later years, Kyle Tucker was one of those. But Cal was very clear. Anything I mean, anything happened, he wanted to make sure there were people in the media giving his side,
Starting point is 00:33:25 I don't know what Mark Pope's side is about anything. And I don't think anybody takes up for Mark in public. We have no idea. I think Matt Norlander was that for a little while. He got pretty critical as the year went on too. But as he got critical, then they cut him off. And so, like, I don't know what Mark Pope thinks. Does Mark Pope think the roster, he didn't get enough support from Mitch Barnhart?
Starting point is 00:33:48 Does Mark Pope think he picked the wrong players? I have no idea. And I don't think anybody else does either. I don't either. You know? One thing I look back on is when Pope's, you know, question narratives in the 22 million, I want to be like, dude, you said you have a Ferrari
Starting point is 00:34:03 and you compared it to your 96 team. So if the bar was raised too high, you kind of started that early before the year even began. And the only thing he ever brings up in public is that somebody made an AI thing about his wife in a plane crash, which I didn't even saw that. Did you see that? No, I don't even. No, did you want to ever see that picture?
Starting point is 00:34:20 No, when I was listening. Shannon? No, I don't even know what he's talking about. I don't even know what he's talking about. I don't either. And I think most people are in agreement that the Facebook AI stuff, we know it's slop. I mean, there are some people falling for it, but that's not a big narrative in the fan base at all. The only thing I ever see is that Colin Chandler donates all his money to like Preston'sburg Middle School. Good for him. Colin Chandler would literally be Elon Musk rich if the amount of money he's giving to people on Facebook was true. I saw he and Oway split Pope's fine to the SEC. So that I see, but I never see this other stuff. All right, let's do what we did a minute ago. 30 seconds for all these people. Are you ready, Shannon? Yep, let's do it. Brad, go.
Starting point is 00:35:03 UK athletics and university leadership has started a major feud with the fans. That's just a fact. Every campaign needs the slogan. The slogan here is, UK athletics does not prioritize winning. The only reason we're having a year three of Mark Pope is because of mismanaged finances. botched tires and poorly negotiated contracts out mike go mike that's not mike there's two different mics okay mike go let's try this mike he doesn't understand the assignment in 365 days or sooner we're going to be having this same conversation if something doesn't change all right mark go
Starting point is 00:35:49 mark everybody you have to be ready to go you have to be ready to go Like when I say go, I don't need you to switch it from your Bluetooth to your phone to your Blu-ray to your X-ray. Just talk. TJ, go. I understand that Pope might not be the guy, but you have to take into account. He has two years. Todd Golden lost in the first round his first two years.
Starting point is 00:36:21 Shire made the round of 32, Sweet 16, his first two years. And maybe Pope isn't the guy, but he was 8 and 1 his first year with a healthy team. This year we never really saw them fully healthy. So maybe he's not the guy. Maybe he doesn't have that dog in him, as people say. But right now, I just don't see how people say to fire him or he's not the guy. We don't. All right.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Appreciate it. Debbie, go, Debbie. Very staff. So that will offset all his analytics. He's got to balance out with common sense and not just use analytics. Also, I think Capiludo's new slogan should be touch money. How about Debbie? Wow.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Spicy. Spicy Debbie. Look, who knew Debbie had that in her? BP, go ahead, BP. Matt Jones, Mark Pope is a good dude. He could date my daughter. He can take my wife on a date. But 46 and 26 in two years at UK is not acceptable.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Thank you. Appreciate it. Take your wife on a date. He's allowing her. He's lying today his wife and his daughter? And he's daughter. And he's a daughter in relationship. You need to listen to our podcast about relationship advice.
Starting point is 00:37:40 Yeah. You do. By the way, a lot of good feedback from that. Yeah, it was fun. You and I, I made Ryan and Mario listen to it on the way back. Ryan, would you think of our advice? It's very interesting to hear two single 40-year-olds talk about relationship advice. For me, really, I'm not kidding.
Starting point is 00:37:59 Coming from a different perspective, a guy who's been married, lived that side of it, to hear you guys side of it is totally different. You know, the best feedback we got, Shannon, was from women. Because they agree with us. Yeah, because we understand. Women. That's exactly. Matt, go ahead, Matt.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Hey, every organization needs like multiple channels, right? Multiple communication channels. We need some leaks. Somebody's got to leak some information. Otherwise, we're making up our own narrative about what's happening with Mark Pope and they're going to date our daughters and wives or something. something, I guess. I totally agree with you.
Starting point is 00:38:41 I totally agree with you. Appreciate the call. I had a conversation with two different people, actually, over the course of the last five days at UK, both of which said, our plan going into next year is for us to control more of our information than how we get it out to people, meaning essentially, rather than give media stuff, it's going to be BBN network. Absolutely horrible ideas. And I said to one of the people, you can't interview yourself.
Starting point is 00:39:09 You realize no one gives credibility if you interview yourself, right? No one will believe that. And they were like, well, we believe that's the way to increase revenue in the future. That's just, that's horrible. And they will realize that. You know, why do you think we were at the, again, at the Super Bowl? The NFL is allowing every Tom, Dick, and Harry with a phone to come. Why?
Starting point is 00:39:30 Because they bring eyeballs. There's a reason they let, you know, stress. come in and interview, is that a person? Sketch. They let Sketch come in and interview Roger Goodell. Because they know Sketch can relate, like, if they just bring in, hello, this is Frank from NFL.com to interview, like, everybody's going to go, but if Sketch comes in and he's like, babidi-do, then, but the UK doesn't get that.
Starting point is 00:39:59 UK is living in the 1970s. It's completely fair. They are. And leaks are part of it. Leaks are part of life. It's what works. You don't think that these like the president, like when the president wants something out, he tells like Andy Bashir, when he wants something out, they leak it. Like, you just talked about John Calipery. That's what he did. John Calapary was the best at it. And the moment John Calgary stopped doing that was in part coincided with his fall because he became so inward. Especially if there's already a narrative out there that's not true or you don't like it. One text to a media member. It doesn't have to be anybody.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Anybody just say, hey, by the way, that thing that's going around is not real. Will you help get the right thing out there? There's a rumor two of your friends are, two of your players are fighting over a woman. Text somebody and go, that's not happening. Can you shut that down? Can you please shut that down? And that ends it. Yes.
Starting point is 00:40:50 Yep. But if you're like, oh, they shouldn't do that, ignore them. They stink. That just keeps going. That just keeps going. Just shut it down. One texting it ends, but they don't do that. Serve pros is the number one choice in cleanup and restoration, whether it's mold, fire,
Starting point is 00:41:03 storm or water damage, we've got a pro for that. We're the ones that make it like it never even happened. If you have a fire or a flood or something like that, it stinks. But serve pro will come in, fix it, and it will look just like it did before. It's SERV, PRO.com. ServePro, servepro.com. We hope you never need them. But if you do, go to ServePro.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Final segment, we'll be right back. KSR. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:43:37 Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:43:57 If you're watching the latest season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, you already know there's a lot to break down. accusing Kelly of sleeping with a merry man. They holding Kay Michelle back from fighting Drew. Pinky has financial issues. I like the boogie style of Housewives show. I think it looks like it's going to be interesting.
Starting point is 00:44:16 On the podcast, Reality with the King, I, Carlos King, recap the biggest moments from your favorite reality shows, including the Real Housewives franchise. The drama, the alliances, and the team everybody's talking about. As an executive producer in reality
Starting point is 00:44:32 television, I'm not just watching it. I understand the game. As somebody who creates shows, I'll even say this. At the end of the day, when people are at home, they want entertainment. To hear this and more, listen to Reality with the King on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back, Techies Sports Radio. We have some breaking news, Shannon.
Starting point is 00:44:58 Ronnie Nana! Dwayne Peevee has signed an extensive. with the University of DePaul, six more years is AD. I guess that means not going to be the Canoe Kentucky AD. Would have been my probably top choice. So I'm bummed about that. I think he would have been perfect. I think he knows this university, but has a different perspective.
Starting point is 00:45:21 I think he would have been perfect. But he must have thought that he was not going to be considered for this job. Or maybe they can't. Who knows? I haven't actually talked to him about it. So I don't know. But that's a bummer to me. he would have been really good. There were going to be many other good candidates, too, but like, he would
Starting point is 00:45:38 have been a good one. Yeah, I was hoping he'd be high on the list of people to consider as they're still just getting that rolling. I know Eli said he's on his listening to us. Listening to where. You got you were talking to me. 30 people, he said. I don't know who they were. But I guess good for Dwayne that he's getting a new deal at DePaul, but selfishly would have loved to have seen him here. I'd be interested to know how many of those 30 people represent the average fan. How many of those 30 people are like the lineup of callers we've had? I wonder how many times Eli, I've talked to right now I see Terry John, Andrew, Brandon, Mark Martin on the show. Because I bet he's not talked to anyone like that.
Starting point is 00:46:13 And I'm not saying those people, these six people should decide, but they should have a voice. And by the way, on the listening tour, he hasn't mentioned anyone he's listening to. He said they have credentials, though. We don't know the credentials, but they do have a credential. Yeah. Yeah, well, it wasn't Sean. It's not Shannon Ryan. They didn't even get a credential.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Fair point. We're watching it, Ken Roof. One person says, Matt, you don't seem as upset as I thought you'd be with the athletic department stuff. Did you just see it coming? I've seen this coming for a long time on the athletic side. I thought the basketball side would be a little better, but I've seen this coming for a long time. I've been talking about it for years. Like, these guys have been more and more out of touch, and it's the chickens have come home to roost in the last year.
Starting point is 00:47:01 and this is stuff that privately I've been telling them for a decade. You could feel it. You know, you talked about Brett Setser. Brett Setser's one of the biggest donors of the university. Go look at his social media. This is a guy who literally takes one of our UK teams and like transports them to and from games, one of the secondary teams.
Starting point is 00:47:22 And he's done so much for football too. He's done so much. And just go look at the stuff he's tweeting. And this is one of your biggest donors. Just go look. And like you'll see that there's this sea of discontent that has existed for a long time. And now it's just kind of pouring forth a little more. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:41 People seem to like this just rapid fire. So let's go 30 seconds. Brandon, go. Another year. They need to understand it. They need to accept it. There's a standard at Kentucky and we all know it. Good stuff, Terry.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Terry, go ahead, Terry. Good call. I was born August 28, 1962. I'm 60, three years old. Yeah, we've won four titles in that year. UK fans, check your sense of entitlement at the door. Terry, that's not what I wasn't expected to affirm. Andrew, go ahead, Andrew.
Starting point is 00:48:45 Let's stop beating a dead horse. Pope's going to be the coach next year. Todd Golden is the worst. All right, Mark, go ahead, Mark. Mark. All right. Martin. Martin, get it?
Starting point is 00:49:03 Martin, go ahead. Montmartin? Yeah, Martin. Hey, it's simple for me. The athletic department only cares about one thing, and that's money. And when you prioritize money to a degree to where if it comes to end all, you forget about all the things that got you to where you are. You forget about the student environment, the fan environment, a Rupp Arena.
Starting point is 00:49:23 And in regards to Pope, we need a leader who needs to be respected standard. It isn't so worried about being liked. and doesn't lay where it's hard on. All right, there you go. So lots of different opinions you've heard. We probably heard 15 in a few minutes. And I kind of hope the folks at UK are listening, so they get a sense of where people are on the fan base.
Starting point is 00:49:45 Now, tonight, Mark Pope's show is at 6 o'clock. The UK women are playing against West Virginia. So let me just say going into that. The number one sports book for live betting is Draft Kings. Had a good weekend on Draft Kings this weekend. You can as well. You bet what happens. Possession by possessions, use my code KSR, bet five, get 200 and turn five bucks into
Starting point is 00:50:05 $200 in partnership with Draft Kings. The Crown is yours. If you have a gaming problem, going to hear, GameWare, 18 plus Kentucky only, algebra, six, supply, seven days after Israel, for additional term, responsible game resource, see DKNG.c, CO, slash audio, limited time offer. Katz and West Virginia against the ladies in Morgan Town. West Virginia is a three and a half point favorite. Drew, what do you got?
Starting point is 00:50:26 Oh, I like the women here. They're going to give us a longer one, though. Which team? Well, Kentucky women, excuse me. They're going to give us a much longer run than we got from the men's team. The madness is still alive. Let's get behind them at 5 o'clock. I think they play well, even though that is a tough road game.
Starting point is 00:50:40 Yeah, we'll have the game on at the bar. No, actually, we're closed today. We will not have the game on at the bar. I forgot. We're closed. You know what, Mario? Thank you for saving me. Who you got?
Starting point is 00:50:50 They said a lot of West Virginia fans filled that arena over the weekend. So it would definitely be a true, tough road game for Kentucky. A man they knocked on the door last year didn't get there. They get there this year. They get the win tonight. What do you think, Shannon? Kentucky covers and Kentucky wins. Going to the Sweet 16.
Starting point is 00:51:06 They're going to keep March alive for all of us. They don't have an answer for Clarit Strach. She kind of got to take it easy against James Madison. I pulled back a little bit in the second half. I think we get a huge game from Clarit's next. As I told Charlie Cream last week, Kentucky should be hosting this game. It should be.
Starting point is 00:51:24 But that's okay. They can be biased against us. The cats will go into West. Virginia win the battle of Appalachia, right? Or were we the Hatfields or the McCoys? The Brooks is in the streaks. Well, one of them was in Kentucky and one of them was in West Virginia. Which one are we?
Starting point is 00:51:41 I don't know. Whichever one we are, that's the one that's going to win. And we are going to beat West Virginia today and go to the Sweet 16. Give thee the cats by six. I like it. Thank you all very much. We're here for the next few days. May go to opening day Thursday.
Starting point is 00:51:57 That's right. Well, I am going, but we may do it. the show there. Nice. That's exciting, right? We'll see you later. This is being Kentucky Sports Radio.
