Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Life is full of hurdles. So how do you keep going? On Hurtle with Emily Abadi, we're talking with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness from professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions about the challenges that shape them and the mindset that keeps them moving forward. At our level, at this scale, being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Starting point is 00:01:36 Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Listen and learn the hard way on the IHare radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome, everyone. It is the local Toyota dealers KSR postgame show. A heck of a win and a heck of a night for Kentucky basketball as they come back from an 18-point deficit and hit a shot that'll go in the regular season archives. for Kentucky. Malachi Moreno with our own Christian Leitner shot to get the victory, 75, 74, on the road in a game that I'm not sure Kentucky really deserved to win, but they needed to win anyway. And it's now 11 and 6 on the season, 2 and 2 in the SEC. I said, I tweeted after the game, this was a season
Starting point is 00:02:49 saver, and I genuinely do think it was a season saver. I kind of was of the opinion that, that I was already thinking when we were down one and they went to shoot the free throws. My assumption was, as I'm sure everybody's was, that we were probably going to lose the game. And I kind of thought it is more likely than not now that we will not make the tournament. That was my mindset. And now after that win, I think it is a season-saving win. Now, it's not like a season-clinching win. I mean, you still have a lot of stuff you're going to have to do to even make the tournament.
Starting point is 00:03:26 but a loss tonight, I think, would have been completely a different situation. And the cats had a miserable first half, miserable first half, 22 points, offense scored two field goals in 14 minutes. It was just, it was horrible. But in the second half, you saw the makings of a team that can be really good. Now, it required them to shoot the ball really well. They hit a bunch of threes. I think they hit eight in the second half, maybe nine.
Starting point is 00:04:02 But they started to share the ball. They started, they went with the lineup that I think is going to be what they have to do. I think they have to play three guards and then either Camer Yelovich at the four and Moreno at the five, maybe a few minutes here and there for Garrison. I don't know what you do with Diabate. I really don't because I don't think he fits in now with what this team has. to be, but it is clear that the smaller lineup just works more. It allows these guys, it gives, maybe more, most importantly, it gives Oway and
Starting point is 00:04:35 Aberdeen driving lanes because that's clearly what they're better at. And I thought they played really well in the second half. Now, LSU hit some shots. Defensively, it wasn't great in the second half. And so you had a chance for the game to end up where you played really well in the second half, but because of your first half, you weren't going to win. But they get this play. And that play will go down in the UK kind of lore.
Starting point is 00:05:02 I mean, I always love these moments where something happens and you go, okay, I know that's one like kind of for the books. And that Malachi Moreno shot, Malachi has kind of put himself in a history part of UK sports where there'll be collections of shot. to win games, and Malacod's now in them. I mean, just think about all the ones you know over the years. A lot of times they are, you know, these SEC games, Julius Randall's tip in against LSU at home.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Reed Shepard a couple years ago against Mississippi State. Eric Daniels on the road against Mississippi State. You know, there's obviously the ones over the years that have been in the tournament. But that one was pretty awesome with a cross-th century. you know, full court pass. I cannot remember a UK game won on a full court pass ever. I would ask Billy, but he's many things, but he's not really a UK basketball historian. But maybe somebody can tell me on the text machine.
Starting point is 00:06:13 I can't remember a full court UK pass. I remember guys dribbling up the court like Nazi Muhammad against Fandy. Kelton Johnson hit a half quarter, but it was to send it to overtime against Seton Hall. I can't remember a full quarter. So that one goes in the lore. And what a huge shot. I mean, that might be the difference in making the tournament and not, is that play. And Colin Chandler, I said what happened, that was one of the great passes of all time.
Starting point is 00:06:42 And then they said in the post game, Malachi Moreno said that Billy, that it was not intended for him. One for him. Overthrow. I think he meant that the play wasn't. design for him because he was the third option. I don't think Colin passed it so badly that he was trying to throw to Moreno on the other side of the court or excuse me, throw to O.A. on the other side of the court and hit Moreno. I'm going to say he was trying to hit Moreno.
Starting point is 00:07:06 I'm going to give Colin the benefit of the doubt because that's a great pay. If it was to Moreno, that was a great pass. And the guy mistimed his jump. And then a huge shout out to Malachi for the like, you know, peace of mind to catch it, turn, not rush, shoot, and it was pure. He almost has like a Bill Cartwright jumper, purer right from that free throw line. And now Kentucky is, if the tournament were decided today, I think they're firmly in. And I said they needed to win seven more.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I think now they would need to win six more. You get a big victory, two and two in the SEC, and now you play at Tennessee on Saturday, in a game you're probably not expected to win, but you've won, what, three last four down there. So who knows? I want to give a shout out to some people I thought played really well. Obviously, O way. O way, four straight games to start SEC play with 20 points. The last person to do that for Kentucky was Jody Meeks. I think a lot of people, myself included, kind of were disappointed with OA in the non-conference. This has been the O way we want. And it's an OA the way.
Starting point is 00:08:21 the O way he needs to be, which is taking it by brute strength to the basket. His play where he got fouled at the end when we were down two, and he only made one free throw. But that play is so him. He basically just, you know, barreled into him, drew the foul, and even though he missed the free throw, that's what Oway needs to be. I thought Denzel Aberdeen was really good in the second half. Not a great first half, in the second half, not only did he make threes,
Starting point is 00:08:49 but he also was able to get penetration. That's the Denzel Aberdeen that they want. Colin Chandler hit a three. Obviously, Malachi was very good. Yellowvich, double figures for the game. I thought all five of those guys played great, and then Cam Williams hit a couple big shots. I mean, this is not the roster.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Okay, this version of the team is not what Mark Pope thought this team was going to be. I don't think anybody who drew this team up expected that you would be running at the end of the game, Oway, Aberdeen, Chandler, Williams Moreno, with Yellovich as the Sixth Man. I don't think anybody saw that coming. But you know what? These guys have found a way to make it work.
Starting point is 00:09:36 The rotations have gotten smaller by necessity. Pope has done something that I don't think is easy, which is to put Diabate on the bench. That is very tough to put a guy that you paid a lot of money for and that is an older player and playing 12 minutes, but it's the right thing to do, at least now, and these guys come together, hit 10 threes,
Starting point is 00:09:58 which that's the most we've hit. I think it gets a good team all year, and get a huge road victory. And for those of you that can remember, that's two buzzer beating wins at LSU, one for the men's team and one for the women's team. And also, by the way, you probably just got that coach at LSU,
Starting point is 00:10:18 fired. Well, yeah, what did the AD say today? He said if they didn't make the tournament, they'd have to evaluate. And start in 0 and 4 with, I think, three losses at home. I think it's going to be hard for them to make the tournament. So great win for the cats. 75-74. When we come back, since she was such good luck last time, Billy, we're going to lead off with Malachi's bomb. Oh, awesome.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Okay. How's that? Yeah, I love that. All right, 859-2-8027. The rest of you get on. If you want to talk about the things that didn't go right, we can. But I also think we should acknowledge that we won, and that was a big-time victory. And it could end up being the highlight of the season.
Starting point is 00:11:05 We'll see, but I'm going to at least enjoy it for tonight. 859-280-2287. We'll take a break and be right back. It is the local Toyota dealers, KSR, post-game show. And now they've got the ball. Chandler will play it in. Got three players in the front court. Aberdeen standing just inside the mid-court line.
Starting point is 00:11:25 Now, Yelovich will go into back court. Chandler, looking, throws it way up into front court. Marino catches, shoots for the win! Oh, he got it! It's a blue-class miracle! Oh, my! Oh, my! They're going to look at it.
Starting point is 00:11:43 But the young fella, oh, man, what a great pass. Nothing better than hearing Tom and Jack call big time play. Tom getting the reverb on the mic because he's so excited. Jack just saying, oh, like, that's great stuff right there. The call of the big time victory. Right now, by the way, Vandy is down seven at Texas. If Vandy were to lose tonight at Texas, Kentucky would only be a game back. The SEC there would, after four games, not be any undefeated team in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:12:18 already. We'd just beat Missouri, Billy. We'd be tied for first. But I'm not going to be upset because we won tonight. And that is the key. All right. Now, we had good luck last week when the show ended with Malachi Morano's
Starting point is 00:12:35 mom, Sarah. So why not after her son's big time shot bring her back? Sarah, you got to be on cloud nine, right? Oh my goodness. I don't even know where to say. I think cloud 10 or 11. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:52 My throat hurt from screaming for loud. Where were you? Well, I was actually sitting on my couch at home. Okay, so now paint the scene for me because I need the scenes. All right. So you're watching the game. It's been nerve-wracking, I'm sure. Last play, what's in your mind before Chandler inbounds the ball?
Starting point is 00:13:14 Please let it just hit somebody who has enough wherewithal to let it fly. that's all I was thinking. I was not thinking, oh, give it to Malachi. No way. I was thinking, just get it to somebody so they have enough time to at least touch their fingers and let it fly. And then when I saw it, you watch the ball and then you see it go into Malachi's hands. What happens? Well, I, like, immediately stood up and then I saw the ball go in.
Starting point is 00:13:41 And I think I screamed so loud that I'm really surprised that, like, my neighbors didn't call the police. Well, and then I called Malachi and so he has on his voicemail me screaming. So I'm just waiting for him to hear that. Oh, I would love to actually get to hear that. So it's got to be weird though when you're at home and you have this great moment with your son. But he's down there. Are you like sitting there like trying to listen, read, hear anything? Like, what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:14:12 Oh, I was all over. Well, first off, my phone started blowing up. And I had like over 100 texts in about, I don't know, like two minute time span. So I'm just like, okay, I just need to kind of take a moment. Because, you know, with him being a hometown boy kind of thing, as they say, and, you know, being from Great Crossing, 20 minutes up the road and all of this. And everyone claims him, which I'm okay with that because they all love him. And so even when he's having a down moment, they still love him. And I'm so happy for that.
Starting point is 00:14:42 But I'm sitting there and I start looking. and then if you want to know the truth, I actually went to your page on Twitter to see what time the postgame show was going to start. So I didn't miss it. Well, I'm glad you did. Well, I'm glad you did. Listen, it's an awesome moment for the team, but it's also an awesome moment for your son. And I have to tell you, just on a personal level, and I didn't even know you until four days ago, I think it's very cool for you. As soon as it happened, I said, we got to get his mom on there.
Starting point is 00:15:18 So, uh, Sarah, thank you very much. I hope you tell all those hundred people, if you can't text them back, you want to send them a message right here, the people that texted you? Well, just so you know, I am one that does respond to everything. So I've already sent blue hearts to everybody or at least a little thank you or something. Okay, well, good. I already responded to all of them. But I will say it on your show too.
Starting point is 00:15:39 Thank you to everyone in Georgetown that has loved both of my boys through their. basketball careers and of course malachi is just beginning and elevating and it's very much appreciated definitely from this mama's heart to everyone that has supported both of them that's awesome all right well listen have a great night sarah and uh go cats absolutely thank you so much matt all right there you go how sweet is that billy even a cold-hearted person like you has to enjoy that moment that is that is really awesome and i know sarah would love to hear that malachi marina was Johnny Rocker, personal injury attorney, moneymaker of the game. Is that two games in a row?
Starting point is 00:16:19 Or did you do Oteg-Elegated? That's two times in a row. And that's the first ever to win two in a row. So injured, get small-town compassion with big city results. When you call the Rocker at 2703-21-44-9, Malachi, 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and 20 minutes. He was plus 10 and the plus-minus tonight and the game winner. Johnny Rocker, boy, that's got to be your biggest honor about the game. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:16:41 The Johnny Rocker role player of the game. That's great stuff. All right, 859, 2807. Let's get started. Who's up first? Jared. Jerry, go ahead, Jared.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Oh, man. How are you going to put me on after Malachi Marino's mom? Sorry, that's just how it's the way it goes. Oh, gosh, I was the first one to call in. Well, number one, congrats to Marino. Dude, it was awesome. I mean, I don't know how you can,
Starting point is 00:17:13 even, I just can't imagine what she's going through right now, but Malachi Moreno, awesome. He's grown so much this year. It's just been awesome to watch. Proud of the Cats. I'm one of the few people that was actually telling everybody that the Cats were going to win this game, even when they were down by 18 in the first half. Really? Wow. I thought the, well, I just thought the offense looked different. They missed a lot of shots in the first half, but it wasn't like you know you'd get four or five passes out of the out of the offense before a shot went up and that was just different from what the offenses looked like over the last few games and i was telling people like this you were the one i watched the first half and i actually thought the offense looked pretty terrible but i'll but you know what i'll take it if you were if a lot of shots yeah well if you're optimistic about that's good that's good i don't know if i agree but that's every single thing
Starting point is 00:18:13 went LSU's way in that first half. Every bounce went their way. And I just, I mean, I told everybody, we're going to win this game, man. Like, it's going to turn around. But, but congrats to Pope. Hopefully, everybody's not calling for his head anymore like they were at half-time. And last thing I want to say, my buddy Phil, he is, he's calling out Kentucky. He's got money.
Starting point is 00:18:38 He wants to play any of them in a game of horse. He thinks he can beat them all. All right. I appreciate the call. You're a fit. Wait, that's enough. That's enough. I gave you a long time.
Starting point is 00:18:46 We don't need to talk about your friend, Phil. The key that coming back was that they cut it to seven so quickly. And then LSU hit some shots now in the second half. You know, that's partially why I'm kind of impressed we were able to hang on because they hit some shots. I mean, it's not like LSU just collapsed. LSU scored, I think they scored 38 in the first. first half, 36 in the second half. They were basically the same team in the second half. So, you know, Kentucky, they earned it in the second half, even though there was never really a
Starting point is 00:19:23 moment I thought they were going to win. But when they took the lead on that Cam Williams dunk, I was like, all right, now you can win this. Let's do it. I didn't think it would be like that. Who's next? Tyler. Tyler, go ahead, Tyler. Oh, well, Matt, it's good to talk to you. I'm shocked that I got in. I figured the phone lines would be absolutely packed tonight, but I guess I got lucky. First of all, I just want to say, if we're being honest with ourselves, Tom Leach is the greatest announcer in the history of sports. The way that he calls those big moments,
Starting point is 00:19:53 I still go back and watch the Harrison's, or the Aaron Harrison shots from, I guess, now over 10 years ago, which is really depressing to think about. But I, if we're being honest with ourselves, and when I watched it, and I ran to the room, I was like, they had won. But I think you tweeted something about it, but that reminded me a lot of a wakner shot.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Like, that was, I don't know if it was. It wasn't. The only difference is they played better defense than we did on the Leitner shot. And what I mean by that is they put a guy on the ball, and then they had a guy in front of Malacca. So like, remember, our Feldhouse was behind Leitner, and we didn't put anybody on the ball. But they actually had some, it was almost as crazy as this sounds,
Starting point is 00:20:38 a better play because, Chandler had to throw it over the guy, and the ball had to go over the LSU defender's hands. So it was the exact same as Leitner, except they played defense a little better than we did. Well, to your point, I think Rick Petino tweeted something about it, like saying, nice play cap, something about, that's why he put a guy on the ball or something like that. So I guess he was watching the game and realized, oh, hey, maybe I should have put somebody on the ball. No, no, he was saying it worked even though you did put somebody on the ball. He was almost taken up for himself. Oh. He was like, see, it can still work even if you put somebody on the ball.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Gotcha. Well, glad the cats won. I didn't think it was going to happen until Malachi hit that shot. I was like, we're going to, because I'm like, we're going to somehow lose this. But we didn't, and it's a good night. So good talk to him. Appreciate the call. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:21:27 It was, it is a good night. Who's next? Justin is next. Justin. Go ahead, Justin. I just wanted to bring up. It's almost like Pope three hours. his analytics that he uses in the second half and went with the lineups that most everybody
Starting point is 00:21:44 wants, which is like Cam Williams at the four, and then, you know, Yellovich at the four. And I ain't going to say everybody wanted that, but Cam Williams at the four just changes the whole the whole way the team can play. And then you have Chandler that's hitting threes, and then all of a sudden it opens up for O.A. Aberdeen plays better, and it's just like he kind of threw. It was like, This is all I got left, and it worked. I agree with you. And I think Yellovich can do it at the four as well because he also can spread out like Cam.
Starting point is 00:22:17 But I tend to agree with you. I think the long-term best version of this team is Oway Chandler, or excuse me, Oway Aberdeen, maybe some Knight's Chandler. I still am not giving up on Jasper playing a little bit. uh cam williams at the four and then i mean maybe it's yellowitch or moreno at the five which is not what anybody would have said but i think that's kind of true i think it's the case i think it is i'm now becoming a hundred percent convinced that you have to play either cam or yellowvitch at the four i just don't think you can play diabeti at the four i just don't like at least with the
Starting point is 00:22:59 team we have and we don't have a lot of knock down shooters with our guards although they hit shots tonight. I'm kind of, I just think you've got to have somebody who presents a threat out there at the four. Yeah, and I also thought that he didn't play the lineup very long, but when Diabate came in and he played the five, they switched everything, and it seemed like the defense, and they ran that little where they threw it to Diabate at the top of the key and done like a dribble handoff.
Starting point is 00:23:30 And the floor was just so spread that there's no chance. anybody can help on the drive. Yeah. I appreciate the call. I think Diabate can play the five, okay, but I think he has to play the five. I think you just, you cannot play Diabate with Garrison. I don't think you can play Diabate with Quaintance, if Quaintant, you know, if and when he comes back. And it stinks because there are things he adds.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And let me say this, we've been on Diabate about attitude, et cetera. I did watch at the end of the game. Nobody was celebrating more than him. That's good. went back and watched the bench to see okay what's Diabate's reaction i was glad to see that it was good as was jane lowes but in quite so uh who's next it's adam that's adam go ahead adam what's going on a great win tonight two things i noticed as i think that pope absolutely tore into them at half time because their whole facial expressions their demeanor everything they came out with some intensity
Starting point is 00:24:31 right at the half. And then also the pick and roll play, I think it was about the two-minute mark with VA and Marino out of the timeout that pulled us within one, I believe. I think those were two big key plays of the night. And we almost dug ourselves too big a hole to get out of, but I'm just glad they showed fighting that second half.
Starting point is 00:24:50 And hopefully we can spark the rest of the season. Yeah, I agree with you. I appreciate the call. I think that we almost dug ourselves too big a hole. I mean, the most frustrating part of this game would have been coming back and then not winning. That would have been very frustrating. But we won. So it's okay, right?
Starting point is 00:25:13 I mean, that was ultimately, that was big. You know, this is a huge win for this team. I mean, if we, if we, A, turn it around, then this will have been the point it turns around. but B, if we don't turn it around and we just grind our way into the tournament, this will be the reason we grind our way into the tournament, in my opinion. Because if you lose this, I don't know exactly what happens at that point. Let's do one more, then we'll take a break. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:25:48 Chad. Chad, go ahead, Chad. Hey, how you doing? Good. Let me tell you. We're doing great. We're going to be fine. We're going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Okay. Everybody's going to be fine. I was closed the door. I yelled at everybody in my house today. And I turned the TV off when it was 1.8 seconds ago, and I turned it back on and we won. And I was so surprised. Can I ask you the question, Chad? What do you mean you yelled at everybody in your house?
Starting point is 00:26:25 house. Well, I got a wife and a dog and an older kid. I yelled at everybody. Get out. I don't want to see nobody. I was mad at the first quarter. So wait, but you yelled at your wife, kid, and dog?
Starting point is 00:26:45 Yeah. Because the team was playing bad? Yeah. Well, it wasn't their fault, though, Chad. It wasn't their fault. I know. But I was pulling around. Ryan. I was mad.
Starting point is 00:26:58 I don't think Ryan Yousson did you. I understand. I don't think Ryan Yosson. We scored 6 points in 12 minutes. Yeah. I mean, and then I was like, fine. I turned
Starting point is 00:27:13 it off. And I sat in my living room doing nothing but looking at the walls. Turned it back on. Be one. Well, I'm glad for everyone involved that we got the victory. More specifically, your wife, child, and dog.
Starting point is 00:27:34 And how? He's still mad. Who the dog is? No, the wife is bad. The wife is bad. All right. All right, Chad. Well, you have a good night.
Starting point is 00:27:48 I appreciate the call. And there you go, Billy. Basketball in the bluegrass. Or dog, for kid, or wife. Yeah. But, I mean, who knows who Ryan was yelling at. He was pretty angry in the group text at about half time. He was angry in the group text.
Starting point is 00:28:06 See, Mario, though, has a great video at KS Bar. A lot of people left KS Bar. Yeah, yeah. And the ones that stayed got to see a wild celebration, and Mario videotaped it, and that was cool, too. All right, well, we'll take a break. That was quite a second segment there on the local Toyota Dealer's KSR post game. We'll have more right after this.
Starting point is 00:28:28 It's a big win for the cat. Welcome back. It is the local toy dealers KSR postgame show. Great call there by Malachi's mom. I want to, if you haven't seen it yet, I retweeted this. Everybody should take a chance on Twitter. I bet it'll end up on KS, Kentucky Sports Radio.com as well if it's not already. the Stephen Peake Jr., who works for KSR as our video guy, his grandfather had been keeping stats for Kentucky every game since 1974. He would watch the game and he would keep the stats.
Starting point is 00:29:11 And he's gotten older last year he had to stop doing it, but Stephen convinced him tonight to keep stats one more game. And he watched the game. I don't know if that's with Stephen's dad, but another person's there, but Stephen is with his grandfather. And they watch the game and they film the ending of them seeing Malachi shot with his grandfather.
Starting point is 00:29:37 And it is a really beautiful video. So if you haven't seen it yet, like it's awesome. Steven, Stevee, S-E-V, and P-E-A-K-E-K-S-R. I hope he'll put that on, he'll put it, I'm sure I'll put it on the blog, but it's on Twitter now. I hope you all get to see it. That's really, to me, like, that's, that's Kentucky basketball, and that is a very cool, cool video. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:30:02 That's what it's about, man. Mike is up next. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Hey, guys. So, tonight, first half, my son lives in Spokane, Washington, you know, We're big UK fans. First half, we're texting each other like, you know, bad stuff, to be honest. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Everybody's group texts were bad. I think that's probably fair to say. Yeah. And then the second half, it looked like a completely different team. They looked like they came out with some motivation, some hunger. They looked like they had a plan. And they executed in a lot of ways. Yeah, we missed some defensive plays.
Starting point is 00:30:45 But, you know, I want to say this, Malachi is, he's a dog, and he is going to be a beast in the next two years. And I'm just praying, man, that this kid comes back to UK next year because I think he's going to own it. And, I mean, he's going to be the face of UK. And that's just me. And that's how I feel. And I think the rest of the season, I think this is going to push him forward. And I think his confidence level, he's going to own it the rest of the season. I believe that.
Starting point is 00:31:16 I mean, I think, I don't know why not. I mean, he's, listen, he has been, uh, appreciate the calls. You know, we've heard me say. Like, he's been so much, uh, not just better than I thought, but just been such a huge addition, um, for this team. And I, uh, I, I love the fact that he's versatile when he,
Starting point is 00:31:36 I think during the off season, he'll pick up and start shooting threes. And when he does, he's got a potential to be an all-American. When you take his, he's already got a good mid-range game. He shoots free throws well, so there's no reason he's not going to be able to step out and learn threes if he doesn't already able to do it. And then, you know, he can, some of our bigs just kind of throw it at the rim. He shoots it and that he has more success that way. And I think I'm with you. I think he's got an amazing, amazing future.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Who's up next? Mariah. Mariah, go ahead. Hello, hi. My name is Mariah, and I'm here in New Orleans. I just wanted to say a few things really quick. First, I want to give a shout out to The Love of My Life being separate. And here's brother, Jess Seppard, who are a huge Kentucky fans.
Starting point is 00:32:26 So shout out to you guys because they made me a Kentucky fan. And then I also want to say that we were at the game tonight and it was electric. I mean, I think there was probably only 30 of Kentucky fans in there in that whole place. But you know what? That win was huge. I think my starting lineup would be number one, number two. sub-out three in and out and also 24 and 5 I love him like I'm gonna just make my whole little lineup and I just want to say that that shit was excuse me that was very exciting and then
Starting point is 00:33:01 okay I got to ask you a question for a hang on just a second hang on go ahead go ahead go ahead go I want to ask you a question all right so first of all do you know these guys names or just their numbers no no honestly I have the paper in my hand because I don't know anybody's name, but also I'm really bad with names. And sports, it's like, go sports. I don't know sports, but, like, I was so into it, and I know the people in front of us was, like, so irritated by my screaming, but I was so into it, and I love
Starting point is 00:33:30 Kentucky. But they've, like, you know, they kind of had a fluster this season because I'm down for my honey, so I'm watching it every time he's watching it, you know. So your honey, wait a minute, so first of all, go sports, I agree. Your honey is a Kentucky fan, and you became a Kentucky fan because of your honey. That's right, because he is a Kentucky fan through and through. So you and your honey go to the game, and you said there weren't very many Kentucky fans.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Yeah, there wasn't. So when he made the shot, did you just lose it? Oh, completely. And I'll tell you this, we lost it so bad. I broke a nail, and that's a serious deal. Oh, no, you broke a nail. And I don't play that. What did your honey do?
Starting point is 00:34:23 Well, screaming, like, I don't want no parts of it because I'm out of control. But screaming, jumping around, we were very excited. There was one, we were next to maybe four other Kentucky people and everybody else seemed like they were just on the other side. We felt very alone while we were down. But then you were together when you were. excited to come back and win. Well, Mariah, that you're a joy. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Oh, sorry. I was going to say it was very excited to win this one on that last shot because we were also there when we lost, what was that two years ago on that last shot as well. Yeah, that was the, that was a very, it was a beautiful, full circle moment. Yeah. Well, Mariah, you're a joy. You're a joy. I hope you and your honey have a wonderful evening.
Starting point is 00:35:13 and thank you for giving us a call. Thank you so much for having me on your show. I love you guys. Thank you. Bye. Bye, bye. I got to tell you, when it comes to, like, a day of phone calls, when you go, when you start this morning with Bob and James Town,
Starting point is 00:35:31 you go to the mom, and then you have whatever that was with Chad, and then you have this. Like, it's been quite a day of phone calls. And she seems fun. I want to go to next two. When we go to LSU in two years, I want to go to the game with her. Her giving the numbers was great.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I like. She likes one and two. Five is her favorite. You know, she may know the numbers better than me. What is it? Let's see, what do you got? One is Aberdeen. Correct.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Three is Cam. Uh-huh. Right. Two is Jasper? Correct. Five. See, I don't, I don't, the numbers go on. Is that Colin?
Starting point is 00:36:15 It is. Correct. Okay. You're doing good. Okay. And then is Malachi 24? Malachi is 24. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:36:27 And then I don't know what Yelovich is. How about O-Way? Garrison is 10. O-Way is 22? Double-0. Oh, I knew it was two of something. I should know, no way. That's a mistake.
Starting point is 00:36:41 I should have gotten down. All right, who's next? Butler. Butler. Go ahead, Butler. I mean, that's a given. If I thought about that, I was right. I had in my mind, I was thinking about, yeah, that's double zero.
Starting point is 00:36:55 I should have gotten that one. Go ahead. Yeah. Okay. Anyways, first of all, I want to say thank you, Billy, for taking my call. I listen to the pregame show and you all every single day. I can't live without it. That's what gets me through my workday.
Starting point is 00:37:12 You know, I got my earbud in. I'm listening to y'all while I'm cooking all these kids at Dacre. Well, I didn't explain that. Well, I'm a cooking at a daycare. Well, first of all, that's an awesome gig. I mean, that's both got to be difficult but also rewarding, right? Yeah, it's, you know what? It's the first job I've had in a long time where I got the weekends off.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Okay. And, you know, I get, I get vacation paid off. If I get a snow day, sometimes, you know, they'll pay us for that off. So it sounds like a good gig. Well, good. So, well, thank you for listening during all that time. Yeah, I've, well, you know, I've been calling since. Oh, I know your voice.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Yeah, of course. Yeah, I've been calling for probably 15 years now, 14, 15 years. I think about 20. 2012 somewhere in there. Okay. Yeah. Well, I was starting it in 2010. So, so big win tonight.
Starting point is 00:38:17 What do you got? Okay. All right. Here's what I was going to go with. Pope, I get it that he's not meeting the standard at this point. But if we look at it and we break it down and we really think about it, like, honestly, within ourselves. he has came back from so many deficits. He has.
Starting point is 00:38:45 And so many games. I mean, does that not? Well, no, I mean, like, it's one of those things. It's like in football practice when we hear in the, when we hear in the off season, defense is playing really well, offense is playing really well. And part of you go is, well, is the defense good because the offense bad? Or is the defense good because it's good?
Starting point is 00:39:08 It is awesome that we keep coming back. back. But part of the problem is we're so far behind. Right? So, you know, so, but yes, I completely agree with you. One thing that is clear about the Mark Pope era, the teams do have the ability to fight back. So my question is, does that not, does that not kind of, I mean, it don't solidify, I get that, but does that not kind of show that he does not know what he's doing? He's just not maybe he's not a first half coach i i don't know but he's he's kicking but in the second half the game yes but we're going to have to get a better first day i don't know what it says and i appreciate the call what it does says to me and thank you i enjoyed uh enjoyed hear from you
Starting point is 00:39:55 it does say to me that we've that they don't the game is not over when you fall like let me give an example. Our UK football team this year, I felt like as soon as we fell behind, it was done, go to sleep. I don't feel that way about this team. They can come back. They have come back, you know, even in this year's team, which has been disappointing at times, big comeback against St. John's, big comeback against tonight, and even comebacks in losses to North Carolina, to Missouri, and to Louisville. So, But we just can't keep getting down by so much at the beginning, but, you know, they did come back. Let's do one more and we'll take a break.
Starting point is 00:40:40 Tim. Tim. Go ahead, Tim. Hey, what's up? Matt Jones. First off, prayers continued for your father. Man, we were thinking about him. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:40:51 It's just, you know, first I want to say, it's just an honor to be on the air again with Billy the real dude. And I'm excited about that. Thank you for letting me do that. I just wanted to make us. state, I wanted to make a, hey, Billy, Billy wants to talk, I will be quick. No, go ahead. Go ahead. Okay. I'd make it sure. I just make a sure. All right. I just wanted to say something real quick, and then I'll leave it. I'm going to say a question at the end, and I'll hang up and you
Starting point is 00:41:15 guys can answer it. My statement I want to say, first off, is, you know, just being real, all jokes aside, a lot of crazy stuff pop it off in the world right now. Let's all just, you know, take a breath. Let's be kind to each other. B, B, B, B, N, is more important than anything else. So be nice to your BB and friends online. Let's all be nice and kind. And unless they're a little fan, you can be as lean as hell you want to them. I don't care. So with that being said, though, this game kind of looked like to me, I'm not going to lie, like I watched it. I was like, it looked like I was watching a game at a YMCA, you know, because like neither coach really called any plays. They were just one-on-one basketball on both ends. And I just thought that was
Starting point is 00:41:56 interesting. And the question I'm going to leave you with, because I get off, is Matt Jones. honest, do you think next year with this coach, we could be a national championship contender? And I'll hang up and listen. I love you, Cameron and Kennedy. You know, I'd have to see the roster. I think it would be very hard to say that today. But, you know, I mean, when we get into the offseason for next year, there's going to be a lot of questions. I mean, there's going to be questions of who do they get in the portal?
Starting point is 00:42:27 Are they able to get anybody in the recruiting class who comes back? you know, to me, there are a lot of questions still to come, but those are off-season questions. The questions right now are about can you get, what's the best you can get out of this team? And for that, this game was a necessity. And Stanford hits another three while they are up four against North Carolina. 7-0 run for Stanford last minute and 20 seconds, and they are up four against North Carolina. I don't know if that's good or bad for us because North Carolina, of course, beat us.
Starting point is 00:43:02 But in Texas beats Vandy. So we are only a game back in the SEC, Billy. How about that? That doesn't. I can't comprehend that right now, honestly. Well, hey, nobody's undefeated. Arkansas is good, too, tonight. They did, but they also, they lost, just to lose.
Starting point is 00:43:19 So, you know, I'm not giving up. 859-280-2287. We will take a break at very back. This is the local Toyota deal. KSR Post Game Show. Welcome back. It is the local trade dealers, KSR Post Game Show. I have multiple requests for Mariah.
Starting point is 00:43:39 Hopefully you're still listening, Mariah, to join the Ladies of KSR Facebook Group. By the way, for those of you that are female listeners, there are two active Facebook groups of KSR listeners. There's Bond That Bridge, so to speak, which goes back to a famous Ryan Lemon interview with NPR. Billy, do you remember that one? Was that before your time?
Starting point is 00:44:01 That was pre-Billy R Sports. Did you know that's where that came from? No, I knew it was a Ryan saying I didn't know what it was from. Oh, you didn't know that's where it came from? No. Wow. So there's people listening who know more about KSR's history than you. One time, MPR did a feature about me and about, like, a sports show that occasionally talks politics, right?
Starting point is 00:44:25 and they interviewed Ryan and I think because it was on NPR he wanted to sound smart you know so he said Matt likes to bond that bridge so to speak that makes a lot of sets in that context but that's like not the same
Starting point is 00:44:44 right but the problem is because that's not the same I now can't remember the real sayings because I just say that all the time he's ruined what we're supposed to be, you know, the same, right? So point being, we named that the Facebook group. So that's spawned that bridge, so to speak. But then Mariah, there's one called Ladies of KSR. It's like 2,200 women.
Starting point is 00:45:09 They're awesome. They do the sweetest things. They send us Christmas gifts. They sent my dad, all these cards. And like, you should join it. I've had multiple people in that group request you to join it. So you just Google Ladies of KSR. And if you're a female listening right now,
Starting point is 00:45:24 they'll accept you. They will not accept men. I'm the only one in it, and I promised Billy not to read it a lot so that they can have their privacy. Oh, okay. All right. Who's up next?
Starting point is 00:45:36 Logan. Logan. Go ahead, Logan. Logan. All right. Well, Jack. Jack, go ahead, Jack. Hey, Matt. The last two minutes of the game
Starting point is 00:45:55 at a movie theater on a date, and I almost turned the game off when O.A. missed a second free throw but i'm glad i stayed in watch them i think almost how the date go filled the pop one everywhere how the day go it was watched uh it was good what that what date was this like second third uh this i think so how is this going to be a real thing like are you going are you taking this seriously yeah i mean i'm trying i think once you get to five like it's either be serious or not you can't you can't play around after five okay so we're you're you're good
Starting point is 00:46:34 George tried to make this work. I'm taking it seriously. Okay, good. Yes, sir. Good. All right, now go ahead. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:41 And then my second thing was, I don't know if there will be a sophomore Malachai Moreno because I think he was projected second round to start the year. And he's been climbing up draft boards all year. And, you know, he's got a lead shot blocking. And if he puts on 40-50 pounds in an NBA nutrition system, I think, could be a solid. I think you get another year out of him. I mean, first of all, and I appreciate the call. This is an elite draft.
Starting point is 00:47:11 So, you know, there'll be a guy go 10th or 11th in this year's draft who might go second or third in next year's draft. Like, this is an elite draft. I also think, you know, I think you probably get a second year out of him. Again, I don't know. We only had his mom on the show. She didn't say. So I don't know for sure. But I would think he'd be back.
Starting point is 00:47:34 But listen, he's got a pro future. There's no doubt. He definitely has a professional future if he keeps improving at the rate he's been going. Let's do four more. We'll call tonight. Who's next? David. David.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Go ahead, David. Hey, Matt Jones, I've called you a first time since 2012 championship game. All right. Well, that was an exciting night. I sat on the floor of the, I believe it was the Radisson in New Orleans. and stayed up into the night taking calls and listening to, well, actually the show started in the Superdome, where I walked around the back halls and had people on.
Starting point is 00:48:15 And, man, I wish we could find that show. Oscar Combs was on it. It was a great show. And then it ended in the floor of the Radisson. Yeah, but go ahead. Yeah, I was taking my kids downtown because they happened to be spring break when we won that game. So anyway, I had a funny happen tonight.
Starting point is 00:48:33 I'm actually in the hospital at the UK. And I was watching the game and the nurses was working on me. Yeah. And we won. We won. I thought, I made both of them jump. It's like,
Starting point is 00:48:48 what happened? I was like, we won the game. It's all right. No, wait a minute. Wait a minute. You had.
Starting point is 00:48:53 No, it didn't look good. So you, did your, did your vitals do something that made them run in? No, no, they didn't run in.
Starting point is 00:49:02 They was just working on me. I think every couple hours I got to take all my numbers, you know? And so you made them jump. And it was at, you know, it was at the end. And I was like, and I can't believe that guy missed both those free throws. I thought, you know what? So you're saying there's a chance. So I, first of all, you don't have to tell me what you're in the hospital for,
Starting point is 00:49:24 but I hope whatever it is, I hope it all turns out okay. And do you know how much I love that you're sitting in the hospital and you're calling the UK post game show? Well, I had to text my boy Brent, and he's like, dude, you have to yet. He hadn't called in since 2012, so shout out to the handies for coming parents next month. Super excited for them. Well, listen, get better, and don't wait 14 years for the next one, okay?
Starting point is 00:49:56 Well, you know, this has been a down and out, and I think that's the exact spark we need. I think maybe it'll put a little fire under my hope. I hope you're right. I appreciate the call, sir. Thank you very much. I mean, what a legendary night of day and night of calls. I mean, seriously.
Starting point is 00:50:17 Mariah, you know, Sarah, Sarah, the mom, date, hospital. Chad. Chad. What is happening tonight? They got to get it out after a big win. Three more. Who's next? Angus.
Starting point is 00:50:38 Angus. Hey, my gosh. How y'all doing tonight? I'm doing great. Good, me too. Happy to be calling after a win, so I'm not going to be super negative. Malacomarino for president, first of all. My question is, what, if anything, can we do to prevent these slow starts on offense?
Starting point is 00:50:55 What line-up rotation can we use? I went through every rotation I could think of in my head and cannot get a lineup that can prevent these. You know, 12-0 runs to start a game. Well, you know, I think, I don't know that there is like a magical, like, these are the people because they've started lots of different people and it hasn't started well. And then they've, I do think the one consistent theme, if you look at all the games where we have played well for big stretches of time, it has required us to have four people who can shoot in the game, whoever that is.
Starting point is 00:51:32 Right. And that kind of leads to my second point. I miss having elite level basketball players and an elite level basketball team. Like, I'm not saying these guys aren't good, but they're just not what we're accustomed to at Kentucky. And they have their moments of brilliance. Don't get me wrong. We don't have, no, we don't have the elite superstar NBA level talent. I would agree with you on that, certainly on the perimeter, which is where I think it's the most obvious sometimes.
Starting point is 00:52:01 but I will say this. We had a lot of those guys, and it came a point that we were losing the Oakland's in St. Peter's with those guys. So there's got to be a balance here where we find a way to create a roster that has some of that talent,
Starting point is 00:52:18 but that also has guys who are experienced, et cetera. And I hope that's what ends up happening. I appreciate the call. Two more. Who's up next? Let's go to Jose. Jose.
Starting point is 00:52:31 go ahead Jose. So I want to say that I'm glad that we finally cleared up how to pronounce Malachi Morano's name. It was really bugging me. All right. I would hear it on the radio and the TV broadcast. But man, what a game. I had to watch it on replay, recorded. So I was working.
Starting point is 00:52:57 And so I'm fresh off all the emotions. Oh, really? So you actually finished it late. So for you, it just ended. I like it. Yes, yeah. It did maybe 15 minutes ago. I immediately got on the postgame show. I love it. I love it. Shot out Malachi. What, what a game. I'm glad that he's paying out better than we thought. And regarding our other Kentucky freshman, Jasper Johnson, man, I hope he stays for another year. He grows a little bit better. I'm glad he can get his shot, but when he gets a shot, it just hits the side of the backboard. I still think, though, if this team – I agree, but if this team – and I appreciate the call, if they're going to be good,
Starting point is 00:53:44 if they're going to take another jump from where they are, he's going to have to be part of that thing. He is, and I think Pope knows that. I think that's why he's trying to fit him in. Tonight they got so far behind that they just had to roll with what they had. But they're going to need him because right now, I mean, think of it. about it. If you believe like I do, you've got to play three perimeter players. If you don't play Jasper, then Billy, you only have three perimeter players. Yeah, you may need-O-A Aberdeen and Chandler. You don't have anybody else.
Starting point is 00:54:15 You may just need them for some short spurts to give the guys some. So I think you've got to play some because you don't, I don't think this team can win without playing three guards. And right now we only have three cards. So unless Jasper play. So I think you're going to have to play Jasper, and I want to see him get better. Let's do one more and call it a night after a heck of a heck of an evening. Chris. Chris. Go ahead, Chris. We can't end with that. So just the next person that calls in, Billy. Yeah, I got him. Hold on. Let him through. Just let him third. All right. You're on. Just go wrong. Who is this? Who is this? Tony, you're going to finish strong. Go for it.
Starting point is 00:55:03 I'm a good call to finish on First time, really, really long time Who was? 40 years ago 40 years ago No, where did he go? He's on, he's still on, he must have muted his own Tony, did you?
Starting point is 00:55:17 You might have muted it, try to fix it. Oh, he hung up. Oh, Tony. Well, we can't end on that. All right, hold on, hold on. You're just going to throw somebody else on? I'm waiting. I'm waiting.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Okay, 859-28027. Don't leave me hanging. This has been a great night of calls. We can't finish with somebody who accidentally hangs up their phone. He had 40 years worth of history ready. While he's getting ready, let me go through the week real quick. Tomorrow is my trivia at KS Bar.
Starting point is 00:55:45 7 o'clock, get your team out there. We will be at the bar for the game during the day. We also have our Cover Zero podcast and a news podcast with me and Drew and Billy as well tomorrow. Do we have someone? No, no. What are you doing, Billy? Are you hanging up on people? No, I'm not hanging up.
Starting point is 00:56:05 But you know, I can't get off. Here we go. Got it. Okay. Somebody's on. Who is it? I don't know. Who is this?
Starting point is 00:56:14 You hear, mute. Turn down your radio. Turn down your radio. All right. All right. Go for it. Hey, I just think it was a great win tonight. But I had a couple questions about why we seem to be confused on our defensive switches.
Starting point is 00:56:32 whenever we're playing defense and still just confused by what you can't make goy-ups. Well, they do sometimes switch poorly. I thought they did a really good job in the second half. There were a couple times where we gave big shots in the second half to LSU guys. One of them was Diabate. He played like five seconds of really good defense and put his hands down and his guy made a three. There was another position where I thought Brandon Garrison
Starting point is 00:57:03 and slid his feet and played really good defense, and then at the last second, fouled the guy. Same thing with O.A. I thought he guarded the guy really well, and then at the last second, fouled him. So some of it was just like we were close to a really good defensive possession, and then it would break down right at the last minute. And, you know, it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:57:21 And they shot 53% from the field. So I think it's also worth noting, we beat a team that shot, I believe they shot 53%, or at least they, with a minute left or something, and they were 53%. That's, you win a game like that, especially when you're down 18. That's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:57:39 Well, listen, thank you all. Great. Go ahead. Well, gone. Got gone. Thank you all very much. Hope you have an amazing evening. A game winning shot that will go in the history books.
Starting point is 00:57:51 The Cats, take a victory in LSU, on a buzzer-beater against the Tigers. Cats win. This has been the local Toyota dealers, KSR, Post-Gam Show. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
Starting point is 00:58:24 This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
