Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
A rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

Welcome, everyone.
It is the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show.
What a game.
I mean, what a game.
Wild win.
91 to 89.
The cats in Starkville get a huge one.
You can give us a shout.
We'll open it at the end.
of my little monologue here.
You know, there are certain games.
I think I said this after the Louisville football game this year.
And I've said it a number of times in football.
I've said it in basketball too.
It's more rare in basketball in the regular season because we expect to win.
And so oddly, I think in basketball, sometimes we remember the losses more in the regular
season because we expect to win.
but I there are about one game every two or three years in the regular season that you really
remember right like that I can sit here to people of a certain age and say a game and you you can
remember it like you can remember exactly the end or the details you know for me those
games started with like the LSU come back in
I guess that was 94.
You know, Cal Airas had a bunch of them.
And so a lot of them have been at Mississippi State.
The DeMarcus Cousins called me game.
You know, that John Wall team had a bunch of those kind of games.
The first game against Miami of Ohio, the Yukon game, the Carolina game,
then the Carolina game, Anthony Davis's year, Julius Randall's team against LSU,
Kevin Knox year against West Virginia.
I mean, I could go on and on.
For all of you, there's different games.
Well, I think tonight's going to be one of those for Kentucky.
I mean, I think when you look back and you think of this season,
we will clearly think about whatever happens in March.
That will be the first thing we think about.
But then the second thing I bet we think about is this game tonight,
because this will be like the Eric Daniels put back game many years ago
and the Call Me game to Marcus's year.
Mississippi State has produced another regular season.
in game that we'll remember.
Heck even the Billy the COVID year, the best game was Dante Allen at Mississippi State.
He could not miss that day.
There's something about playing in Starkville where we just create these moments,
and today was definitely one of them.
I'll just kind of go through the game as it went for my take.
We started poorly, both halves.
And, you know, the question, I have always been Cal's biggest advocate on the lineups
don't matter, but it's starting the game.
I'm starting to switch this year because in the first and second half,
our starts were what killed us.
But even in the first half, throughout the first half, even though we were down
six to ten, most of the first half, I still kind of felt pretty good about where we were
because they were hitting, they were kind of hitting everything, including DJ Jeffries
hitting two threes and he shoots 26%.
That's a guy.
I still remember the day he decommitted from Kentucky to go to Memphis.
I was in Jackson County for a radio show.
So, you know, I still felt good about where Kentucky was because I felt like they can't shoot like that the whole game.
And then they didn't.
And in the second half, you know, again, poor starts the second half.
The Reeves foul and the three, that was a little bit of bad luck.
I think he got shoved into him, but still unforce.
Then we're down 14.
But I still thought they could come back because I just felt like Kentucky kind of had their number on offense.
And it was just a matter of getting a few stops.
and then that's exactly what happened.
They went, I think, six minutes where Mississippi State only scored two points.
We were able to get back in the game and then a really special performance in the second half from Reachep.
I mean, just a special performance, well, mostly offensively, but also defensively.
You had a couple of blocks, had a couple big steals.
It was special.
And that's why people will remember it is how good he was in that second half.
I mean, it wasn't just him.
Rob Dillingham went on a little seven-point run.
Reeves had his normal 20 to 24 points every single game.
But, you know, Reed was special.
And so then you get up eight with a minute to go, and you're like, what a win.
I was literally composing the tweet that said,
this is a major win that could propel the team to march.
I mean, I already had it written.
and then we give up back-to-back-threes and an an one, turn it over,
and all of a sudden it's a game.
The last minute is one of the wildest minutes of college basketball you'll ever see.
If we didn't care about the outcome, it would have been great theater to watch.
I've been a lot of people that aren't Kentucky fans turned it off and didn't even get to see it
because they were like, well, this game's over.
but the Hubbard kid from Mississippi State
I haven't watched them play much
and he didn't play particularly well against us
in Rupp but man he's good
hit some big shots
we did some really dumb things
including not guard in the three point line
Reed had a terrible turnover
I'm not I'm not going to argue of people
Billy I still think we should have fouled on three
especially when the big guy had it
because you know the big guy had it at the top of the key
and he shot 52% from the line.
But you know what?
None of it matters because we won't remember anything.
What will remember is Reed.
And then the shot at the end of the game.
I mean, you know, for a team like Kentucky with a program like ours,
they're oddly, Billy, aren't a ton of buzzer beaters in the regular season.
You know what I mean?
I mean, we have the amazing shots in the postseason.
Right.
The Aaron Harrison shots, they're not buzzer beaters exactly.
but end of game shots. Tyler Hero had that shot against Houston. Brandon Knight had a couple
shots. DeAndre Liggins. I mean, we have those. But in the regular season, if you say here and say,
okay, well, what are the buzzer beaters? There aren't a ton of them. Now, I know technically this one
is not one because I guess there were 0.5 seconds left, but it really was. I mean, it was a buzzer
probably the last one was E.J. Montgomery.
Yeah, that's one I thought of.
Florida. I think that's the last
one that I can think of.
Somebody said Quate Green had one.
I don't remember that one.
I mean, I'm sure it happened. For some reason, I can't remember
it. But E.J. Montgomery's the last one that comes to my mind.
But this one was great because
Cal has always taken the view on the last
play,
especially if they have to go full court
to play it out with no
time out. And, you know, people have different views of that.
I generally have been fine with it, especially when he's got the best players.
The last couple of years, besides this year, I'm not sure we've had the best players,
so maybe we needed to set something up. But this is an example of why he likes to do that.
Because DJ Wagner gets down the court, he drives, he really doesn't have a play,
and he kicks it out, that's actually a very good pass. A lot of guys take that shot right
there and probably miss it.
And he flips it back to Reed, who hits an awesome floater.
We got to be between Reed and Reeves.
We got to have the best floaters in the country.
Right.
I mean, we have to.
And it's an awesome ending to an epic performance.
I mean, that is a signature performance.
You sit there and go through the various Cal-era single-game performances.
He's going to be up there, you know, with Reeves last year against Arkansas, Oscar,
when he went for 20 and 20.
You know, you can go through.
Jody Meeks.
Like there's a lot of mine.
I know 32 points, but it was, they were all clutch.
They were all big shots.
They hit their free throws at the end.
Three different guys, right?
Reed, Reeves, and Robb all hit big free throws.
It's a great win.
And now you set yourself up to where you have a really good chance.
Even if you lose to Tennessee, you have a really good chance of getting a buy.
if you beat Tennessee, you're certainly going to get a buy.
And actually, if you beat Tennessee, you've got a chance to win the league.
We are set up now to where if everything plays outright, we'll play Tennessee for the SEC title.
Now, we need a couple of things to happen.
But we now have the tiebreaker on Alabama.
Alabama plays at Florida, and they play Tennessee.
They lose those two games.
Auburn beats Tennessee tomorrow night.
Yeah, we got a shot.
We got a shot to tie for the league and maybe even have the tiebreaker.
So this was a great win.
It was fun.
And this team, this team has been can't miss like excitement drama this year.
It's been very frustrating at times.
We've been through it.
But it's such an exciting team to watch.
And I saw a tweet right before I came on here, which was from Justin Rowland.
who runs Cats Illustrated.
He had a child today, by the way.
I think he's got Billy 37 children, I believe.
Oh, that's a lot of kids.
I don't know how many has.
He has a lot.
But he had a child today, so congratulations to him and his wife.
He had a tweet that I thought was really good.
He basically said, you know, Caliperi is the perfect coach for Kentucky,
and there's nobody that would be better because.
And I thought what he said was really good.
Calipari makes it.
to where these all, it's always excitement, especially this year.
I don't know if you all follow ratings, but the Kentucky games this year.
Every time they're on are the highest rating games of the night.
Every night, it'll be that way tonight too.
Every night, every Saturday, the Kentucky game is the highest rating game.
And it's consistently higher than, really Duke is not the same since Shoshchewski,
but we still are.
And we still are can't miss drama.
And this year has been quite a ride.
And I think what has been frustrating at times the last three years is not only if we
underachieved, it's kind of felt a little boring at times.
Well, this team ain't boring.
This team is exciting with likable guys, with historically great shooting for Kentucky.
I mean, this has to be.
this is probably the best three-point shooting team ever in Kentucky history.
And it certainly has the best top three three-point shooters ever.
And every night you just don't know what you're going to get.
And there's something frustrating, but also exciting about that.
And tonight is a perfect example.
And now with this win, I think they're set up to where
anything can happen in March, anything.
And we won't know until it happens, and it'll be a roller coaster,
and it's going to be fun.
And that's what I do love about this group.
It is completely fun.
So congrats to the team for winning.
And congrats to Reed Shepard for getting to have that Kentucky kid dream kind of night.
Because, you know, this is why you come here,
and this is why seeing him succeed is so awesome.
And I had somebody who is a very prominent UK fan write me that never writes me after a game and say,
isn't it cool to see a kid from Eastern Kentucky do this?
And it really is true.
Like, for those of us from there, it's just cool.
And I think that's partially why this team is so awesome.
All-American candidate in Antonio Reeves, one of the most exciting players I've ever seen in Rob Dilley.
and then a Kentucky kid who brings it night in and night out in Reed Shepherd.
It's just an awesome group.
And hopefully it has a finish that is what we all want.
859-280-2287.
Billy, my Hurricanes just won.
So it's been an awesome night.
KSR Parlay hit for the first time.
Wow.
Is that the first time ever?
It has not hit since we started with draft gigs.
It hit tonight.
Drew.
Drew does most of the basketball ones,
but I didn't even get a chance to look at it.
I said, Drew just pick one, and he hit it.
And when he sent it, Billy, I thought that's a good one.
He had, it was, what was it?
Reed Shepard more than like eight points.
Antonio Reeves, more than 15, win the game,
and more than 76 and a half scored.
And so actually hit pretty easily.
So, congrats if you played it.
We'll take a break.
I'm excited to talk to people on a happy night.
We'll take your calls and be right back.
It's the local Toyota dealers, KSR, post game show.
Murphy, Murphy, drives across into front court, hands it back to Hubbard,
rolls right, long three, got it.
With eight seconds, comes into Wagner at seven, at six, Wagner,
Wagner pulls up over to Shepard.
Shepard penetrates, floater, yes.
Way to go reach Shepard.
Go ahead.
Why not?
Why not Reed Shepherd?
Reed Shepherd rescues the cats with a floater in the lane.
Oh, man.
They're going to check the monitor, but it was good.
It was good.
Screaming Leach, right?
Getting it done.
Tom Gah has such excitement as well.
You got to get Jack to amp up his excitement there at the end, Bill.
You got to tell him, like, I need him yelling too in that moment.
I don't know.
Jack's happier than anybody in that.
He is the happiest guy, but it's like he stays even keel.
But Tom does not, and that's why I love him.
Great call there at the end of the game as the cats get the victory.
Billy be honest, when they made that three were like, were you guys going as crazy?
The whole post game show flashed before my eyes.
I thought it was all going to be, they didn't foul, up three, the whole last minute.
Yeah, the last minute.
I mean, I'm obviously glad we won.
no matter what. I'm really glad we won
so we didn't have to relive that last minute
because that last minute was a disaster.
But I will tell you the one thing
they did that last minute.
They made their free throws.
Consistently,
I don't think they missed a free throw in that last minute.
They had a turnover and a bad foul by Ugo
and then whether or not you think you should foul on the three
or not, three point or not. I would have,
but other people don't. But
they made all their free throws. When they got
fouled. I think Reed made four or six. Antonio made two, and I think Rob made two. You know,
they made their prethrows, and that's how you make sure you get a win like that. We've had a lot of
years where it felt like we didn't make those in those circumstances, and this time we did.
All right, let's get started. Who's up first, Billy? Buffalo. Buffalo. What's up?
Hey, Matt. How are you doing? Doing good. Hey, shout out to Billy for let me on the Billy and Matt
post-game show. Appreciate you, pal.
No problem.
Hey, what I want to really give
Cal credit for tonight is, you know,
Cal went zone for a few possessions
there, and it really good. He went
for two. I wish it was more.
Honestly, he went
for two, but I actually thought it was some
of, now we played a lot better defense
in the second half. We really did.
I actually thought we played pretty well for six or seven
minutes. But in the first half,
the zone, those two possessions of zone
were our two best defensive possessions.
They missed a rush three the first time.
And the second time, I mean, he made a three with a second or two on the shot clock.
And that's a guy you're okay shooting.
So I wish he had stayed.
But I knew when Jeffries made that we weren't doing it again.
Yes, sir.
Both of them were quality defensive possessions for sure.
And, you know, the only thing I'll say about fouling up three, my man Cal lost a national championship.
He ain't going to do it.
Now, there are people who are.
will say there was, okay, so I think even Jim, and I appreciate the call, even Jimmy Dyke said
there's too much time on the clock. He's right when you imbound it. So I, I think when, again,
we want, but I think when there's 16 seconds left, you don't foul on the imbound. I agree with that.
But when the big guy got the ball, we did a great job, Antonio Reeves got, Antonio and Reed
doubled him and got him to get the ball out of his hand to the big dude.
And I think with like 10 seconds or nine seconds, that's when you found.
But we didn't.
And then he made, you know, when he went up for that shot, you knew it was going in.
But again, that's what's so awesome about, about Shepard ice in his veins, right?
He made the turnover that caused the, that basically kept the game close.
And then they hit that three.
And he still comes right down the court and makes a big play.
It was awesome.
Hubbard can play.
I have to tell you, I have not, I've only watched Mississippi State twice.
I think I watched them beat Auburn and then the game in Rupp.
And he didn't play well in Rupp.
But man, he was good tonight.
Who's next?
Alan.
Alan.
Alan, go ahead, Alan.
Hey, man, just excited about the game, excited about the outcome.
And the only thing that I'll say about it, that I wish.
I just think Reeves and Shepard should be on the floor every second they could be on the floor.
I mean, those two are just awesome.
Well, and they make each other better, too.
Like, I think, you know, I mean, we've talked a lot about it.
I like Reed, Reeves, and Rob together.
But there are times Rob gets out of control, right?
And so sometimes you do have to sit him down.
But the thing about Reeves and Shepard together,
because they are both such good shooters,
A, they cannot leave those guys.
There's a play that I'm sure somebody will break down on the Internet,
there's a play that happened that I thought that happened on the court because Reeves and Rob or Reeves and Shepherd were in.
Adieu had a drive to the basket and two men, Shepard and Antonio's man, could probably would have cut ball, but were told to not leave their men.
And Adu got a wide open layup.
That doesn't happen if those two guys aren't in because then their men would have collapsed down.
those two guys together, and then they make it where the third best defender has to guard Dillingham who can abuse them or Wagner who can take them off the dribble.
It's just those two guys on the court together just make us so hard to guard.
Yes, 100%.
That's all I got.
Go catch.
Appreciate it.
And I can't believe I've gone as far, not noted Z.
I mean, Z was great.
I didn't think you could play Z in this game because I thought it'd be too physical.
And he did get thrown around a lot, but he held his own.
And you know, we won by two, Billy.
Z was plus 22.
And scored two points.
So I'm going to do it without a lot.
I mean, think about that.
Z had two point.
If I told you that Z in a two point game would be plus 22 and only had two points.
Because if I told you it was plus 22, you'd have thought, Billy, you hit like five three.
Right.
But to make that impact and only scored two points against.
maybe the most physical team in the league, that's crazy to me.
And he did a really good job.
I mean, I give him a lot of credit.
And he's another one that because he's an offensive weapon,
they have to account for him,
which gives people more space.
I'm told we were 15 of 15 from free throw line in the second half,
nine of nine in the last minute and 10 seconds.
That's pretty good.
That's pretty good.
That's pretty good.
Who's next?
Ryan.
Ryan.
What's up, Ryan?
Hey guys, I appreciate you taking my call tonight.
I just got a quick question for you.
I know we still got a bunch of ball left,
and this is a great, exciting team to watch.
You know, they're exciting to watch this year,
and these boys can shoot the ball.
I was just curious on your take on who would stay this year.
You know, who would, honestly.
You guys love to talk about who would stay.
I mean, I have no idea.
It's all going to depend.
First of all, I think we talked about this a little bit today
on the show. It's all going to A first, depend on the draft projections. I think for those of us that
would love to see Reed for another year, as good as this was tonight on prime time in a game where he
had 20 some points in the second half is the reason he's probably not going to be here next year.
Because he'll, games like this make him a lottery pick. Dillingham will definitely be gone.
Reeves graduates, Mitchell graduates. Beyond, and I,
I would assume Wagner goes kind of no matter what.
The questions will be Edwards, Bradshaw, Z, Hugo, Adieu, Berks.
And I got to tell you, who knows?
You know what I mean?
Because it's not just the draft.
There's also the thing about the transfer portal.
So I don't know that there's any way to know.
And so I would encourage people to just enjoy this next four or five weeks.
because I think from now on in basketball,
we're never going to know who's coming back
until they just do it, you know?
Yeah, well, I appreciate that, Matt.
Like I said, I would just curious on your take of it,
you know, because we're just one of those linger
that we always ask because, you know,
we haven't had a team like this, you know,
and I can shoot the ball like this in a long time,
like you mentioned, there is the best people you ever have.
I mean.
I know it's been a long time.
That's why I only asked because you, I mean,
could you imagine if they did all stay,
we would have a,
killer team. Well, Reeves graduates. Reves graduates. So, yeah, you wouldn't be able to have him. I was just
excluding. I was just the only one leaving. We would have a killer team next year. But I appreciate
you guys. I appreciate the call. That's not going to, that's not going to happen. But probably the
most likely player. I think we said today, the most likely player to come back would probably be a
if I were to, if I were to guess. I don't think we've had a bet. I am certain we've never had a
better team, the top three shooters.
We have never had a team where the top three shooters from three were better than
Reeve Shepard and Dillard.
And the team as a whole, you know, Mitchell, who's hurt right now but can shoot,
Adieu has become pretty good.
Wagner hit, I think, two threes tonight.
You know, Edwards hit, what, four in the last game?
I don't know.
Isich hit four against Georgia?
I mean, how many times?
Think about that for a minute.
I mean, we've probably had seven guys hit four threes in a game.
Maybe Petino's Bombinos did that, that first couple Petino teams,
but I don't think anybody else has done that.
Who's next?
Edward.
Edward.
Go ahead, Edward.
Hey, Matt, how are you?
Doing good.
Hey, listen, just two quick things.
I know you're trying to get a lot of people in.
First and foremost, the nuclear lineup.
does it again. I was so impressed, kind of like you said, I didn't know how Zee was going to be
against Tony Smith. Well, it was more Thierro instead of Edwards tonight. So it was the foul trouble.
And it was also Wagner some instead of Dillingham. But, but yes, in general, to me, the nuclear
lineup really means you got to have Shepard Reeves in together. And then, and then a Vich has
been an added addition in the last couple games.
Yeah, no, absolutely.
But I wanted to be mad at the end of the game about how we finished it, but to be
honest, I couldn't find it.
I mean, I'm just so happy we finished it.
I think we've been looking for a game probably since Florida, where we could close,
especially on the road.
And it kind of reminded me of 2019, that team that was trending upwards, that win to end
the season at Florida.
Just a gritty win.
It doesn't matter how you come by it.
You get it.
And now this team can go into the next three games, hopefully win the next two, and
and going to Tennessee with hopefully some house money.
So, hey, thanks to make my call.
Appreciate the call.
Thank you, Ben.
It reminded me of in 2011 that Brandon Knight team,
you may remember we had like game after game,
where especially on the road,
where we would like be in a close game and lose.
And oftentimes I think Brandon Knight might have missed the final shot.
We had like three or four games that were like a one possession game on the road in the SEC
and we lost them all.
And then I can't remember which game it was.
Maybe somebody can remember and text me.
We won one towards the end.
And it was almost like at that point, it kind of switched, right?
It was like at that point, oh, wait a minute, here we go.
And then during the tournament, they had the Princeton game, which came down the final play,
the North Carolina game, and the Ohio State game that all came down the final.
play and we were money in all those games after having been bad at them early i kind of wonder if
this is like that in uh 2011 who's next page page how are you page uh hey first time long time
who asked um um i just got two things to say um so i i know that dealing him can uh score in a clip
really quickly but i felt like tonight we're down and we went to him we probably should
went to read because, you know, he was kind of hot hand.
What do you mean?
What do you mean? Hang on just a second.
That was 71-67.
We went to a timeout.
Mississippi State's PA system told them not to storm the floor if they won.
And we came back and we scored seven straight points, five of which were Dillingham
and one of which was a Dillingham assist.
He didn't have a great game overall, but he did the stretch that gave us the lead.
Yeah, but I'm talking about when it was like 13 to 8 minutes in that span.
When he threw it away, kind of missed some shots.
I thought we should have gave Reed a chance at that point.
And then otherwise, I feel like.
Listen, I think Reed had plenty of chances.
He did really well.
I mean, he obviously made the – but listen, Rob, look, Rob, we don't win that game without that little stretch I'm talking about with Rob.
So you got to give him credit by that.
I agree with that.
The only other thing is, no matter what percent three-point shooter you are,
you can't just back off of a man three times.
He's going to hit one of three no matter what.
So I've got to say, man.
Thank you.
I appreciate the call.
Not satisfied tonight, Paige.
She won it.
Reed Shepherd had 32 points and scored 20-some in the second half.
Page wanted more shooting for Reed Shepherd.
They didn't shoot it enough.
I'm glad you said that about Rob, though, because, I mean, he played not that great and then had that huge sequence near the end.
He didn't play well at all, but then I think Antonio Reeves had not set out at all in the game, like at any point.
And so he gave him, I thought this was smart a Cal.
He gave him like a minute break knowing the under four timeout would come.
And Rob came in and in that little stretch got the points.
And then we had a possession where we were kind of stagnant, and then they put Reeves back in, and that was, we made those plays.
Well, really, Shepard made those plays down the stretch.
Who's next?
Justin.
Justin.
What's up, Justin?
Hey, how's it going, guys?
Doing good.
There's a couple things that might be obvious, but, you know, Shepard coming in, I had no idea that he was this good at his overall game.
It's just, he does things that I'm like.
That's not normal for a freshman to do.
He is, what I think is so amazing about him, we've had freshmen, not many,
but we've had a couple freshmen who could score like him.
What I'm really impressed with is, and Jimmy Dykes, I think, said this,
he is Scott probably, and it's such a stereotype, people say,
well, he's got a basketball IQ.
They always say that about little white dudes.
But he actually, his basketball IQ really is unbelievable.
And even though he makes a lot of mistakes,
he makes more ridiculous mistakes than you would think for a guy who plays like that,
he follows them up with good plays back.
You know what I mean?
He throws that ball away at the end, but then he makes a shot at the end.
I just, I have a lot of respect for him for that.
Yeah, my second thing is, is that I know in the past Calipari's been able to do it,
but I just think it's amazing how he gets all these players to,
care about one another. Bradshaw not getting as many
mess. He's over there hugging Hugo after he
makes the ridiculous foul. Dillingham wanting the ball to end of the game
and he didn't get it on the wing. I don't know if you noticed or not. He was
the happiest one when Shepard hit the shot. I just think that
I think that might be his greatest skill of all. I mean his
two greatest skills as a coach and I appreciate the call. One is
recruiting. He's obviously maybe the best to ever do it in terms of
recruit. And then his ability to get all of these dudes who are highly touted to come in,
be unselfish and play for each other, that really is maybe his most impressive trait.
And I don't care how big of a critic you are of Cal. You have to be impressed with how he does
that. Aaron Bradshaw, that's that caller made a, that's a perfect example. That's a kid
who could be disgruntled if he wanted.
At one point he was the number one player in America,
and now he plays a handful of minutes.
He was the third big off the bitch.
And he's up as excited as anybody the whole time.
That's Cal that does that.
And he's done it pretty consistently.
He's had very, very few people who no matter what their role was
didn't buy in, and that's a testament to him.
Because he can do that in a way that I'm not sure any other coach in the country
can with really high caliber guys.
859, 280, 2287.
Let's take a break and be right back.
This is the local toy dealers, KSR Postgame Show.
Back, it is the local toilet dealers, KSR post game show.
A couple things.
Vandy right now leads at Arkansas, 78, 75 with two minutes to go.
Those are our next two games, and they are playing each other right now.
Two home games, hopefully we can take care of both,
but it is a, Vandy's led this entire game.
They're two and 12 would be.
another disappointing loss for Arkansas if they lose.
Also, how about Mark Pope, Billy, goes into Kansas and gets a road win with BYU.
Yeah, do we want that?
That's great for the former cap.
It doesn't help our resume.
But, you know, Kansas never loses at home.
They ruined my 18 parlay, but Mark Pope did deny with that win.
The Kansas never loses at home.
But Pope, not only did he win, I watched the second half of that game.
as always, horrible whistle for the road team in Kansas, and still overcame in one.
Mark Pope got a technical.
I don't think Mark Pope is a Mormon.
I thought he was like never cussed.
Well, he certainly cussed tonight.
I watched him.
But a great win for former cat Mark Pope.
And a couple people wrote me in 2011, it was against Tennessee.
So Kentucky was two and seven on the road that year.
They won their first road game, and then they won their last one.
and the last one was at Tennessee.
And so, and that was, I want to say, they made a play at the end of the game to win.
And it was kind of like, all right, they finally gotten over the hump to win one of these close games.
All right, who's up next, Bill?
Kenny.
Kenny, go ahead, Kenny.
Hey, guys, how you doing?
Doing good.
Good, first time, a long time.
Hey, couple points.
Reed Shepard was his composure throughout the game.
game.
And another point, it got down to a plate, and a three-point shooter, wide open state, but they
still converted.
Yeah.
It's just a great win.
Well, I appreciate to call.
You know, I have a request.
All right, Billy.
I'm going to make a request.
All right.
To announcers that are calling the games.
I'm making a challenge to you all.
just once compare Reed Shepherd to a player that is not also a white player.
Can they do it, Billy?
Probably not, but...
So far this year, I've counted.
He's been compared in games to his dad, which is understandable because it's his dad,
Steve Nash, JJ Redick, and Grayson Allen.
A wide variety.
And none of those players are alive.
like each other.
I think he got both JJ Redick and Steve Nash tonight.
And I don't know what basketball people watch, but those two dudes didn't play alike.
So can you think of any more?
Well, I mean, he plays a lot like his mom, if you haven't heard that one.
They do say that one.
That's true.
They do say his mom.
It just feels like just once.
You can do that.
You don't only have to compare lefties to lefties.
You don't only have to compare white players to white players.
I know you can do it, but no one ever does it.
Who's next?
Aaron is next.
Aaron, go ahead, Aaron.
Hey, what's going on, man?
What's going on?
I'm just actually happy because I hit my parlay,
one like $600 because I put $75 on that Kentucky would go over
or both teams will go over, and then I hit the spread.
And then I put another 100 on the over.
I mean, are you buying the Reed special Donato's pizza for everybody tomorrow?
honey and banana peppers.
Dang, I didn't plan on it, but if you want me to, I can.
I don't care to.
All right.
I think you should buy a Billi and I, a Donato's pizza tomorrow with all your
winnings.
Well, I mean, I work at UK hospital.
I got to be there at 2.30 if I can make it.
Well, that's okay.
I'll tell you what.
We'll take a rain check, but congrats on your win.
Yeah, I got a question, too.
It's off subject.
But do you know who Carlos Tumor is to eat the play in the 90s?
I do know who Carlos Tumor is.
Yeah, I didn't think anybody would,
but that's my dad.
I'm his son.
My name is Aaron.
So I just wanted to, I want to introduce myself one day when I see y'all at the bar.
Well, I would love to meet you.
I, of course, remember your dad.
And he was on the early Patino teams, right?
Yeah, yeah, but he didn't get to play like that.
So I didn't think anybody would know who he was.
Listen, let me tell you something.
Let me tell you something.
I guarantee you.
You know your stuff.
Not just me.
I guarantee you there are a ton of people.
Do you say your name's Aaron?
Yeah, Aaron.
I don't want you.
you to think that people have forgotten your father.
Did he pass away?
Am I right about that?
No, he's not.
Okay, good, good.
I don't know.
Good.
I'm glad.
I had that wrong.
But I guarantee you there's a lot of people that remember your dad playing.
So, listen, he was on those teams when I was a kid, when Petino's first years, we were
obsessed with those teams.
And I actually, I think your dad came to my hometown.
one time after he finished with like a group of players and played at my at my high school
yeah like i got a lot of people tell me a lot of stories about him like random stories like
even though he didn't get to play like that much get that many minutes he's still part of the team
and still got to do everything you should be very proud of you so nice to hear from you a
yeah i'm going to do myself next time i see you please do i'll be there where i'll be there a lot
of times with lennie bluebird so okay well i can always i can always smell when lennie gets there it takes a
for a aroma when he walks in.
Appreciate it, Aaron.
Appreciate it.
Billy, you do not remember Carlos Tuma, right?
No, no.
He was on the team and it was about the time that kindergarten cop came out.
So people would call him, well, but people would call him Carlos, it's not a Tuma, because
that was from kindergarten cop.
Have you ever seen kindergarten cop?
I think I have.
Have you ever even heard that line?
Ryan says it all the time, too much, actually.
I think maybe that's where I've heard it from is Ryan.
Well, that's a reference from Arnold Schwarzenet.
Now you're in kindergarten cop.
All right, who's next?
Heather.
Heather, how are you, Heather?
Well, man, that was just, I was sitting here when you asked him if his father had passed.
I got that wrong.
Don't give me a hard time, Heather.
I honestly, I was trying to be complimentary to him because I do remember his dad.
Don't say it was not awkward.
He corrected me, and now I know.
Okay.
Well, first of all, read, I just want to say 606 in the house.
I'm so happy for it.
Well, good.
And, you know, one of the previous colleges was talking about Bradshaw.
And he was my favorite in the McDonald's game.
And it is weird how it's like a whole different person,
but he still got the best personality.
and maybe for all these teammates, so I love that.
We overcome the rule of 71.
We did.
We did.
You know, this year, the rule of 71 hasn't been as easy to apply because we score too much.
I know.
We score too much.
Like, I think it's probably like, if we were to do the numbers, it's probably this year,
like 80 or 79 or something that we score too much.
We hit 71 so early in the games that it doesn't, it's not as scientific.
Right. I really like really make some of the craziest shots. He could stand on his head and try to gargle pink better and make it.
He makes me smile. No matter what he does, it's pretty amazing.
He always looks, I mean, like he is, his legs spread open or he's jumping up with one leg out. I mean, but it goes in and I love it.
All right. Well, I appreciate it, Heather. I think he's.
very much. I now remember
Billy what it is
besides playing. I remember Carlos
Tumor for. What's that?
Dwayne,
my friend, Dwayne, making
ball fan. He reminded me
Carlos Tumor. This is
early KSR website.
Aaron, if you're listening,
early on in the KSR
website days, we discovered that
Carlos Tumor writes poetry.
I don't know if he
like had a book of it,
or he wrote it online, but we discovered that he wrote poetry,
and we would post Carlos Tumor's poems on the website.
As a matter of fact, Aaron, if you were to Google,
I bet you would find an old KSR post with your dad's poetry.
How about that, Billy?
I totally, now that Dwayne says that, I remember,
but I'd forgotten that was early.
I'm talking like 2006 KSR website content.
And I found it.
Did you find it online?
Yes.
I'm going to have to read that.
I remember being very tickled to find out that he wrote poetry.
So see, Aaron, your dad and now he played in Kentucky.
We remember him and we remember his poetry.
Who's next?
I'm just glad everybody's still alive and doing well.
Yes.
Let's go to Johnny Versace.
Johnny Versace.
Hello.
St. Reed Shepard, second of his name, Stormborn.
he is our savior.
I don't know.
Are you being biblical?
I think so.
I mean, he needs, you know, at least I think he earned the right to start the first half and maybe the second half tonight.
I think I'm going to give the first half a pass, Arkansas with a three to top.
Missed it.
So Mandy wins at Arkansas.
I'm going to give a pass with the first half.
That's going to be what it is.
I do think, though, Cal used to have a philosophy in the second half.
He would start whoever had played the best in the first half.
I'm for us doing that, Johnny, probably now.
Yeah, I mean, you know, it may not matter.
It matters.
It matters.
I mean, it matters.
It does.
I mean, look, we beat them by double digits if we start the first and second half better.
Well, here's why I'm encouraged.
You know, super hostile environment.
Correct.
Dude goes for 34 throwing up.
Did that guy have 34?
Wow, he had 34.
Yeah.
You know, in the post, you could jump on somebody's back.
On the offensive side, you could catch the ball in the paint,
elbow twice, push off once, you know, go, you know, lay it up.
I mean, the pace was extremely slow when they wanted it until the end.
when they were down seven and then they had to throw up crap that went in.
I understand, but listen, to be fair, Johnny, to be fair, Johnny.
You can't go, he throws up 34, he gets lucky.
Reed had 32.
Okay, now I agree with you about some of the other stuff.
But sometimes we have to remember, we act like the other team has bad luck and we have no luck.
Like, I mean, yes, he had 34, but we had a dude score eight more points than he ever has as a career high.
So it evens out.
Well, I tend to disagree, but all I'm saying is if you win in that, if you win in that situation with this team, with, you know, this was our kryptonite, 34 on the road, you know, physical team, which physical is a euphemism for I get to, you know, elbow you end up.
Listen, we won. Johnny, we won. Why are you being so frustrated? We won. I agree with.
everything you just said about the physicality.
That's why I thought we would lose this game all year.
They are so physical.
And I agree with the hostile environment.
And I, and they, but you understand, like when you play that team, that's how they play.
What I think's exciting is we can't whine about refs letting physical play because you know what happens in the tournament, Johnny, you've watched it.
They let physical play, don't they?
So we won a game with that physical play.
That's what I like to see.
No, that's the point I'm trying to make, Matt.
This is a turning point.
This is we have, you know, we went into the lion's bin.
We survived all that stuff in a game that's not set up for what we do and we won.
And I think it's a turning point.
I think it's great.
I think it's we proved that we can win in those situations.
which is super important in March.
I agree with you, and I think it's even more important for, yes, I agree with everything
you just said there.
And that's how games are going to be in March.
Pretty much everybody we play is going to play.
If they're capable, they're going to play like Mississippi State did.
And that's why, you know, there were a couple calls I really didn't like.
I tweeted about one of them where he threw a V-sitch to the ground.
But the thing is, I noticed Cal really didn't.
complain at the refs a ton tonight.
Our fans were a lot, but if you notice,
Cal didn't a ton, and the reason
is he knows, this is how it's going to be in March,
and that's how they're going to call it.
That's how they're going to call these games.
And the reality is we're not as physical as these other teams.
So to go and win a game,
so to go and win a game,
that physical is important.
Because we can sit and go, hey, refs,
you ought to call it. They're not going to.
They don't call it like that in March.
and we won a game the way they ref games in March.
I disagree in that I agree with you that they don't in March call the touch fouls on a perimeter,
but they do call fouls in a paint when you're pushing and elbow in.
I can give you a game that got me sued where they didn't call those files.
So, you know, I think I appreciate the call, Johnny.
You know, I love you.
I think if you watched Cal tonight, he probably argued less than I've ever seen him argue in a road game.
And I think it's in part because that is how they rep these games, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Now, the first half, there's that Justin Edwards got destroyed on a layup and they didn't call it.
That should have been a foul.
There's a lot of stuff like that.
But in those last 10 minutes, that's how they play.
That's how they call it in March.
where they should is different.
That's why the game is almost different in March
because they don't let people go up and down the floor in March.
It's great to see us win a game like that.
Who's next?
Casey.
Casey.
How are you, Casey?
Hey, Matt Jones.
This is Casey Clark.
Listen, this game is exciting in its own right,
but this is why I was especially exciting for me.
You know, you always talk about fandom at a specific point in a kid's life.
Well, I've got four girls, 10, 7, 6, and 4.
And my two oldest, I finally kind of gotten into it, specifically got into it on the bandy game this year.
And tonight, they stayed up with me.
And we were watching the game and we're high-fiving.
And it was just, it was that point of it from being a dad where I know my kids solidified their fandom tonight on a game that was already so exciting.
But, man, holds an extra special meaning for me watching it with my girls Haven, Della.
That's very cool.
Glad to hear it.
I appreciate the call.
That is what it's all about, right?
That's the different generation.
That's why Kentucky's different than everything else, the different generations of fans.
August 7th, Billy, 2006, Carlos Tumor in his own words is my post.
Do you have any of the words you'd like to share?
Let's see.
He wrote, this was one of his poems, Unity in our community.
I was able to jump from the free throw line when Rick Patino came to visit me in high school.
I have newspaper clippings to prove it.
I went from 175 to 190, and it may be the difference from the...
I think I spelled something wrong.
I didn't have the best editing back then.
That was beautiful.
It's so weird to read.
Oh, he wrote a poem called Jared Carter.
Would you like to hear that?
Yeah, let's do that one.
Jared Carter.
Like an open book, my heart is to your interpretation.
You read and all is clear.
Touch the individual words and feel their majestic quality.
Oh, I felt that.
So he would write, this is all coming to me now that I see it.
He would write a poem and then name it for like a player, even though it wasn't about the play.
Does that make sense?
Yes, it does.
And that one was called Jared Carter.
and every time he would put a new one, when we started posting about him,
he would then post them in the comment section, right?
And then we would make them post.
2006, KSR.
That's before almost anyone listening here was reading it,
except my friend Dwayne.
But great memory.
Thank you, Aaron, for calling, and I'd forgotten that part of the history.
859-28027.
We will take a break and take your calls for the final segment.
This is the local Toyota dealers, KSR post-game show.
It is the final segment, local toy dealers, KSR postgame show.
So now I got some people here, Billy, trying to give me a, trying to give me a comparison to Reach effort.
That's not just why you got, right?
Okay, what do we got?
There's some that are, you know, it's kind of back and forth.
But I do like, he's, I mean, obviously, look, he's not as good as this dude.
but I do like saying a taller kind of like Isaiah Tom.
Because Isaiah was a great passer, was Shifty, pretty good shooter,
and could find, and really got his teammates involved a lot.
I don't mind that one.
I don't, the reason I don't like, like, Steve Nash, he wasn't as fast as Steve Nash.
And then, you know, a dude like JJ Redick,
JJ Rick was just different kind of
player. He just shot
for the most part, although he was an amazing shooter.
And I'm not comparing
anyone I like to Grayson Allen.
That's not nice to anyone.
So I kind of like that.
Isaiah Thomas. Again, Isaiah is like
a Hall of Famer way, way better.
But if you're trying to say, okay, well, what could
he be?
The thing to remember about Reed, when he was
the best version of Reed
was always in the AAU. He was really
good at North Laurel. But I always felt like he looked better in AAU than he did in high school,
because I think the better the player he was playing with, the better he was. And that's exactly
what's happened at UK. He is the better the guys he plays against and with, the better he plays. And to
me, that's a sign of a dude who's a real player. And that's why I think he's going to be good in the
pros. And I would not have, I probably didn't believe that. Well, I know I didn't believe that,
but I certainly believe it now. Who's next? Chris Paul, maybe?
Chris Paul, I like too.
Chris is more physical, though.
Chris Paul, actually, Chris Paul's just bigger and, like, plays more physical than Reed does.
But Chris, he plays like Chris Paul, but he's not as big, and he might be a better shooter than Chris Paul,
who's kind of been hit and miss in his career.
But go ahead.
Kramer.
Kramer, go ahead, Kramer.
Hey, Matt.
I kind of relate this game to the Florida game.
I know there's probably too much time left tonight,
but I feel like when you're up three, you've got a foul.
I know that when Reed hit the shot, it was awesome,
but I feel like when you're up three,
you just have to file.
Well, there's too much, there was too much time when they imbounded it.
But I do think when the big guy was about to hand it off,
that would have been a good time to foul.
But, you know, let's just put it like this.
thankfully we won and that didn't have to be the conversation after the game you know
thankfully we were able to get that win but honestly it should have never been to a point where
they had a three to tie you know what i mean it was the other mistakes that were kind of the issue
yeah um i just i mean i i just feel like that if imagine reed didn't hit that shot and it went
to overtime but he did do you feel confident that we win i don't know
I don't know. I don't know. That's why it was so big that he hit it. I don't know if we don't want it
overtime. But that's why you need a guy like him, right? I mean, that's been our problem in the last few years. We haven't had a dude who can go and make that shot at the end of games. And now we got a bunch of them. Dillingham can, Reves can, Shepard can. I think even Wagner can take people off the bounce and do it. So that's what's exciting about this group is we got guys to make those end of game.
place.
All right.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
Let's do, Billy.
We'll do five more, all right?
Well, we've got five on the line, so that's a good number.
Perfect.
Who's next?
Todd is next.
Todd.
I wish the Cleveland hadn't hit a half-court shot to win or we would be leading
sports center, but a 60-footer to win the game is probably going to lead.
But go ahead, Scott.
Todd.
Todd.
Yeah, Matt.
You were preparing a player to read
Shepard what come to mind a black player would be Dale Brown.
You mean from Kentucky?
Yes.
Oh, he's a lot better than Dale Brown.
I mean, I like Dale Brown a lot.
But Dale Brown was like a defensive first guy.
Reed, I like Dale a lot.
Don't get me wrong.
Dale was our defensive stopper on the 93 team, but Reed's better than him.
And Dale could, he could, he could, but he wasn't a point guard.
He's a point guard deep down.
Yeah, okay, okay. Now, I wanted to make a comment about our big guys, you know, seven toll rebounds between the three of them.
And I would think we need to get Oscar back in here to give them rebound in less.
Well, they're not as big as Oscar. Oscar was a big dude. I mean, Oscar was not only, he was strong and he could, you know, a lot of the stuff that Tolu Smith does to people down low where when they're not.
not look at he kind of hip chucks them into the stands.
That was the stuff Oscar used to do.
Oscar was really good at that stuff.
And I did notice tonight that Big Z seemed to play a little more aggressive.
He did.
I agree with that tonight.
Totally agree.
He did.
He was a lot more aggressive.
And I like that about it.
And aggressive, not necessarily on offense, just aggressive defensively rebounding,
etc.
Right, right.
And when we had that eight points.
lead with 50 seconds to go.
I told my wife, I said, if we lose this game, I'm not going to watch them
the more.
You work, but that's not true.
You were going to watch them.
You were going to watch them.
You can't quit.
You can't quit them, and neither can I.
So we shouldn't act like it.
But I appreciate the call.
You're not going to quit.
Stop.
You're not going to quit.
Appreciate the call.
None of us is going to quit.
This is too much a part of our lives.
We're not quitting this.
Who's next?
Braxton.
Braxton.
Four more.
What do you got, Braxton?
What's up, Matt?
Great game.
Me and my buddy went to the game, coming back home.
Feels great to go through the end of the game, walking through the stadium.
No one could say your name or say anything to you because we came to your town on your t-shirt night.
We packed your stand and we kicked your ass.
Go big boo!
See, I like it.
That's exactly right, though.
That's exactly what Kentucky is supposed to do.
We come to town.
There's that famous clip of Cal, I think, when they were doing that documentary.
And he says, we come to town and we.
beat you, you know, come to your city and beat, that's what we do.
And actually, they're five and three on the road this year.
So while we've had some disappointing losses, what they've done on the road this year
has actually been really impressive.
Who's next?
Thomas.
Thomas.
The last two games have just been, oh, my gosh, the two most incredibly exciting
different types of games.
Yes.
I mean, I can't remember time outside the tournament.
These have been awesome.
two games.
They have.
And this whole season, if you think about it, has been exciting.
Not always exciting in the most, with the best results, but has been exciting all year.
Sometimes frustrating.
But if I'm in the NCAA, if I'm Houston, Connecticut, nobody wants to play us in this
tournament.
You might get frick or fracked.
We might crush you.
You might crush us, but I would not want to play this team in the NCAA tournament,
no matter where we're seated.
I think Jimmy Dyke said that during the game, and you're exactly right.
If you're Yukon, as good as you are this year, or you're Houston,
if you look and see Kentucky as your four or five, you're going to go,
are you kidding me?
It'll be like when Wichita State was a one and saw us as an eight.
So you're exactly right.
I wouldn't want to, if I was them, I certainly wouldn't want to play us.
Funny how quickly we get back because we were so frustrated.
No, we do.
I'm as guilty of that as anybody.
Appreciate the call.
Two more.
Who's next?
Trey.
Trey, what's up, Trey?
Hey, what's up, Matt?
Hey, I got two things tonight.
First of all, everybody stays safe out there.
I know there's some bad weather moving back in towards Kentucky.
I don't know how much more Western Kentucky can take, but.
Yeah, I've heard that tonight, like in the middle of the night,
is potentially some dangerous stuff, especially just south of Louisville and in Louisville.
So I'm in Louisville.
everybody stay safe tonight and prayers to everyone yeah everyone everyone stay cognizant and yeah just
stay safe hey so i got a good comp for reed shepherd and i know he's not exactly the darkest guy
but i still think this is a good comp jason kid jason kid i think reeds a better shooter than kid
was but i think it's a much better shooter yeah jason kid by the end of his career was a decent
shooter, but at the beginning of the year, they used to call him Aeson kid because he had no J, right?
So, uh, that's exactly. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think that's, I don't know that that's a great
one, but, uh, but, but, but yeah, well, I listen, he's awesome. And, uh, man, tonight was fun.
So I just saw on the bottom of, uh, the SEC network, we combined these past few games that
score 208 points. That's the most total by Kentucky since 1996. How ironic is that?
Oh, wow. That's interesting. I appreciate to call. Well, that was the last team who could put up
points in buckets like this one. That's the only 96 was, that team was much better than this
team is defensively. But I think, I've said a lot this year. The only team that can compare
with Kentucky offensively this year was the 96 team. And that 96 team was a lot bigger than this
team.
Like the dudes were, like, we had like four forwards playing, but, but they're the only team
that could put up points in bunches like this.
To give an example, what I was saying earlier, Billy, I had one guy in the same comment
comparing him to both John Stockton and Austin Reeves who don't play at all like each other.
Yeah, two different players.
Two completely different players.
All right, who's next?
Final call, Tim.
If it's him, how are you, Tim?
Hey, what's going on?
Mr. Tim Seasucks, I just wanted this first off, say it like I always do.
Thank you to you and Billy.
Y'all do an amazing thing for the Big Blue Nation, and I appreciate it.
Second thing I want to say, I have two really quick points, and then I want to tell you a fun story.
So my quick points are the person that I think doesn't get enough credit is a du Thierro.
Okay, that dude is a beast.
Like, Trey Mitchell is the glue.
Yeah, but a du Thierro is the, he is like the elements of that glue.
I mean, like he, anyways, I'll stop.
I love, I listen, I love a dude.
No player.
I mean, there's a lot of dudes who've been better than I thought they would.
Antonio Reed, but nobody is better, more better than I thought they'd be than a do Thierro.
And my other point real quick was, I think before tonight we were peaking,
I think five of the last six halves of basketball, Kentucky has played their best ball by far all season.
And then tonight, we finally did what we haven't done, which is we got over a hump and we won a close game that we were losing.
So that is my two points.
My fun story is, okay, so I'm a huge Kentucky fan.
I live here in Nashville, right?
And sometimes people forget about, you know, like the big Blue Nation is big here in Nashville.
I live in an apartment building, okay?
And I have a little dog named Josie.
And this game was crazy.
People were coming and banging on my doors with a big shot.
I mean, big shots, banging on my doors.
Okay.
So we score, Reed Shepherd scores, we take the win, and I run out of my door, okay, and I slam my door behind me.
And immediately after I do that, I realize, oh, my God, because I know my dog Josie's right behind me.
And I push my arm into the door, and it just, I mean, I probably need, I mean, it's bad.
My elbow is really a bad shape.
And I crushed my arm.
And the great thing about that is, is right when my arm's being crushed in the door, I look,
and my dog Josie with her Kentucky Wildcat jersey on is seven feet in front of me down the hall.
And I could not feel pain because that was what we call big blue blood.
And go cats.
We aren't done yet.
Let's go.
All right.
How about that?
Wow.
Billy.
That poor dog.
He's excited.
He needs to take cornbread hip if he's going to go to sleep tonight.
I hope it, but I love the excitement.
That's great.
I have the best read comparison, at least in my opinion, is Wildcat Corey, my guy from years back, Kevin Johnson.
That's a great call, former Phoenix Sun.
That's the best one I've seen.
A lot of people listening to this may be too young to remember Kevin Johnson, but that is a great call played with Charles Barkley and Dan Thunderdan Marley and all of them.
All right, so tomorrow we will be back for the morning show.
I'll be in Louisville.
The other guys will be in Lexington.
Thank you folks very much.
Two awesome wins back to back.
Got Saturday.
Final weekend home game at Rupp against Arkansas should be fun.
We'll see you later.
