Well, well, well, look who they let in the postgame studio
for the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show.
I am not Matt Jones, nor am I Ryan Lemon.
They each have the night off.
I think Matt has a load management day,
and Ryan had the Auburn post game,
so he's certainly did a night off.
So they left the show with me,
Drew Franklin,
hosting the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show
for the first time.
I'm here with my good friend, Billy R. Sports,
the man who lives in this studio.
I think he's been here since the pre-show this morning.
That's what he does on game days,
and he will be with me for this hour
as we recap yet another.
fun dress rehearsal for Kentucky basketball down the street.
They beat Minnesota State University Mancato, the Mavericks,
98 to 67 in the final exhibition game before it gets really real next week.
Cats start on Monday, but they had these two tune-ups to get ready for that one,
and tonight was almost as fun as the Wesleyan game last week.
Got off to a little bit of a slow start.
We'll get into that, but overall, a big win as they win by 31 points.
Lots of standouts in the game.
I'm now convinced Jackson Robinson is the best three-point shooter of all time.
Lamont Butler is still the man.
Great defense, the assist, the few turnovers.
We know what we get from those guys, had a few other players step up, some surprises.
I'll start just at the top.
How about we talk about how Mark Pope rolled out there tonight, Billy R Sports?
At the same lineup we saw five days ago.
He did.
He had some Devin Booker shoes on as well.
Some Devin Booker.
I saw he just took his – I've been down here.
I didn't get to go to the post-game press conference as I normally do,
but I was trying to fall along on my computer.
Looks like Pope took his shoes off at the press conference.
That's new.
To show him off.
Be careful, Pope.
Be careful with that.
It's a slippery slope.
He was telling Tom about it in the pregame interview.
By the way, it's good to see you, man.
And I cannot believe this is your first postgame show.
First time.
Phil's natural.
I'm sitting where I do, fade this.
That's right.
Other shows, it's you.
You're a comfort level.
If you weren't here, I would struggle with this a little bit.
But it feels normal.
I've been in here for one post game show in the past.
Ryan was hosting, and I was walking by.
and he still had three segments left, so you all called me up to come join.
I even hosted a segment.
If anyone remembers that, I think it was the first game last season.
I got downstairs.
You all were going to hand the reins over to me, and my key card didn't work to get in the building.
That's where I learned where I fit within the company.
Took you a couple weeks, but you got my key card to work after hours.
That sounds familiar.
I know another KSR member that doesn't have a key card and can't get into the building to do shows.
I think they just didn't give me after hours access being in downtown Lexington.
But yeah, I made that one appearance in the past.
We had fun.
I remember that one because a caller, I want to say Matt G.
Could not, if it's not Matt G, I apologize Matt G.
But it was the first game last year, maybe New Mexico State.
And he called in and said Reed Shepard should be the starting point guard.
I called him an idiot, said you're overreacting.
Let these guys play out a few games.
I don't even know how special Reed wasn't that first one, but Matt was calling for Reed Shepard a year ago.
A little foreshadowing there from Matt G. I love it.
By the way, I've got to say, they put you up there pretty high in Rupp Arena with the new media seating.
Oh, buddy, you know, I don't complain.
I have a great job.
It's free.
Let's just say when people were talking about
Kirk Crease's name on the back of his jersey,
I couldn't read it.
I'm up a little bit higher.
You're up in the nosebleeds.
Oh, we are.
Actually, you know what?
I'm going to start there.
I had this in my notes,
but since you brought up the nosebleeds,
shout out to Rock Castle County Middle School basketball.
I sit up at the tip top of Rupp Arena
with my fellow media folks.
We're up in Section 236.
We couldn't be any higher.
I see a big group of people.
It's all empty seats around me, but then one clump of kind of kids about the same age,
a few adults with them, and I assume, hey, this has got to be school group, something.
I'm going to go talk to them.
It was Rock Castle County Middle School.
They went to practice tonight, and their gym was rented out by the school choir, the chorus.
So they didn't get to get any shots up.
So their coach, being a good coach, KSR, a listener, he said, boys, we're not going to let this get us down.
We're going to do some team building.
We're going to drive to Lexington.
We're going to go to dinner.
And then we're going to go watch the cats.
So up in 236, at the very top with the backs against the wall,
was the Rock Castle County Middle School basketball team.
There were a lot of them, and Rupperoon was so empty.
They actually got upgraded to lower level as the game started.
But I got to sit with them a little while, so we're starting with a shout out there for them.
Yeah, shout out, absolutely.
Yeah, good seeing them.
Not a great crowd in my building, being honest, the people there were excited.
Good, passionate group, but a lot of empty seats up top.
Let's get to the basketball, though.
Started the same five as a week ago against Kentucky Wesleyan.
Got a little Lamont Butler, Otega Oway, Jackson, Robin.
Andrew Carr and Amari Williams.
Going into the season, four of those spots I was pretty sure about.
Butler, Robinson, Carr, Williams.
That too really could have been anything.
Last week, Pope rolls out Otega O'Way.
He looked great last week.
Seven straight points right away, two rebounds.
Looked like he's the one that needs to be in the spot.
Pope leaves him there again this week, and he does the same thing.
He was the energy guy early with four quick points,
two quick rebounds in the opening minutes when things weren't really going that well.
I love him in that starting role.
I hope that continues.
Otega will get to him a lot more as the show goes on.
But one of the early bright spots in a game that didn't have a lot of bright spots early,
including Amari Williams getting injured three minutes into the game.
He kind of walked towards the tunnel where I'm sitting.
Not going to lie, the look on his face did not look good.
I had major concerns.
However, Pope has since provided an update.
Let me get this exact.
Pope said in his post-game press conference, I think Amari's fine.
X-rays came back solid, but we'll get some more imaging tomorrow.
Hopefully he'll be back soon.
He spent most of the second half on an exercise bike,
which is comforting once he came back out.
But Billy, it looked pretty scary there early on,
and it's good to hear that he could be right around the corner
that Pope's confident he'll be okay.
Yeah, that's great to hear.
I mean, you don't want to rush him back in a meaningless game.
It's a great opportunity to get better,
but obviously it doesn't matter.
So I think that was the right call.
And hopefully he's okay, because he is a big part of what they want to do.
I know he's a great passer and the big.
seem like they're all pretty good pastors this year,
but that guy specifically, I think he's got a lot ahead of them.
Yeah, they did good backing him up, but didn't like seeing it,
Mari go down.
I forgot to give out the phone number, Billy.
You were supposed to help me.
I get so excited, see my first time.
They're already going to fire me after this one.
Well, we're not answering the calls yet.
That's true.
You can wait until the end of your model.
So call me 859-280-2287 on the local Toyota Dealer's KSR post-game show.
You got it.
859-9-2-287.
Please call me.
We would love the help.
Also, I don't get to hear the KSR post-game show a lot.
I'm usually still at the stadium football.
You're still working, I understand.
I usually catch the last segment.
I time it just right getting in my car,
but I know there's a lot of regulars that call this that we don't hear in the morning.
My understanding is you hate kids or something like that?
Oh, come on.
Is it that?
I love kids, but it's just the parents have to announce that their kid is on the phone.
It's like the parents that take over that say, hey, it's Chuck,
and then they hand it to their kid as soon as they answer the phone.
That's what drives me crazy.
But you know what?
It's an exhibition game.
Drew's hosting for the first time.
bring on the kids. Okay, well, I brought that up to say, if you are a regular caller,
maybe I don't hear from you in the morning, call me tonight. Let's talk about the wildcats.
Let's have some fun. It was a great game again, 198-67, but I want to start by just getting away
the bad parts. Let's put those aside so we can have fun before we go to bed a little later on.
Billy, first half, a little concerning there early. At one point, it was 22 to 20, and Minnesota
State had a three-pointer to take the lead. Didn't love that. Luckily, it bounces off.
I think from that point
Kentucky went on an 18 to 18 nothing run
they hit three unanswered threes
right after Minnesota State had a chance to take it
Trent Noah hit the first one
Trent Noah who was in before Travis Perry
I don't know that was an interesting tidbit about the freshman
then Lamont Butler and Jackson Robinson
they opened up back up to about 30 to 20
and they turned it on but early on it was not looking good
two for 11 from three to start
Mark Pope said the shots we were taking
weren't the shots that we love
said they weren't earning their teammates
weren't earning the shots for their teammates
They also turned the ball over a lot.
In the Wesleyan game, that was kind of one of the best things about them, didn't turn it over.
They had the same amount of turnovers four in midway through the first half as they did in the entire game.
Yeah, maybe the Amari Williams thing kind of disorganized the group.
Mark Pope said that they were fatigued.
They were struggling rebounding.
But then like you said, the 18-0 run, Jackson Robinson, best three-point shooter in the country like you've called him.
I mean, all he did was shoot threes tonight.
Yeah, and you know, you want your team to win.
win by 100 and make every shot.
But, you know, showing a little adversity early.
Could be good for them.
You know, I never felt like I was worried this could be a close game throughout.
But seeing 22 to 20 early on against a Division 2 team I didn't love.
It didn't help.
Andrew Carr did not have a great first half.
He was a little concerning.
He had two free throws, two rebounds, and two fouls.
Didn't play much in that first half.
You're kind of wondering if he would come back and do anything.
Second half played well.
I think he finished with 14.
But in that early stretch wasn't looking good until Jackson Robinson,
caught fire. 15 points on
five threes with four rebounds and three
assists. I went to get my
barbecue tacos
at halftime. Of course. And while I'm sitting there,
you know, I just thought I'd look through some stats.
He was a plus 26
at halftime. Wow. Jackson was? Jackson Robinson.
Dude, special. I mean,
he knows the offense too, right?
He's been around Mark Pope.
Not trying to overreact anything in these two games,
but what do you go? Eight for 12 from
three for the game. And his shot,
kind of little Antonio Reeves
kind of a little Duran
not just with consistency
he seems just so calm and cool
and collected when he's letting it go
he's kind of that silent assassin
not even a lot of emotion when he makes it
but he was huge tonight
he was the game's leading score
what did he finish with
24 points 8 of 13
8 of 12 from 3
6 rebounds 3 assists
Billy I'm not I'm not
I'm not even going to ask for your ballot
I'm just going to name him
our player of the game
the Drew Franklin Player of the Game
sponsored by Billy R Sports
is Jackson Robbins
Well, really him and Otega O'A have just been really pleasant surprises.
I mean, maybe it shouldn't have been since Jackson was an NBA prospect and he has spent
some time in the offense, but those two guys I could really see driving this team forward.
So, and think of this, Drew, in the first half, they shot 24, three-pointers and they only shot
11, two-pointers.
Now, that balanced out a little bit in the second half, but I mean, live and die by the three.
Get ready for it this year.
Yeah, their last six field goals of the half, all threes, as they stretched it out,
got to a big lead before halftime.
I will say in that run where it wasn't great early on, some interesting lineups.
I know Pope had to get creative with Amari Williams on the exercise bike, but at one point,
we saw our first real small ball, and it's not what anyone expected, I think.
He had Lamont Butler, Kobe Brea, Colin Chandler, Trent Noah, and Ansley Almanor.
Then Otega checks in for Almanor, which makes them even smaller.
And Brea was defending the paint on defense.
I mean, he's six, seven.
But I don't know.
What do you think of that small ball lineup?
It was interesting seeing out there.
They immediately gave up an open three.
It didn't last long.
But I guess when your big man, your three-time defensive player of the year's starter,
is sideline with an injury.
You've got to make do how you can.
Yeah, I'm okay with it.
I mean, this is the game to try those type of things.
So I'm actually glad.
I'm not glad that Mari Williams got hurt,
but I'm glad it forced this team into some situations
that maybe they weren't prepared to play in.
And so they have some things to work on.
Is Kobe Brea kind of the odd man out if Otega Oway is playing
well at the two. I'm not
again, not doing any overreacting.
However,
would love to see a little more from him. Yeah.
Athletically, I think
he's just limited. He is what it is, but what did
he shoot tonight? Who? Kobe? Yeah,
the three wasn't following.
And if he's not hitting threes. Yeah, he's two of eight
from the field, one of five from three. Yeah, one of five from three.
I saw Evan Maya. Is that how you pronounce that guy's name? He's kind of like a
new stats guy coming up? Yeah, I'm not sure. Does that ring a bell?
No, not sure. Okay, well, earlier this week, he put out
the expected three-point field goal percentage for everyone in college basketball.
And he had Kobe at number one, like 49%, with a pretty significant lead.
But one for five, not a great shooting night for him.
Like I said, get a lot more out of him.
And it was just interesting seeing him play the paint a little bit.
But I guess it had to do what they had to do.
I'll bring up one guy for you before we need to take a break and start to get some of these phone calls.
Yeah, breaks calls.
You got to remind me to do these things.
With Amari Williams going out, Brandon Garrison, man, 12 points.
He obviously had the dunk of the night late in the game.
had a couple good passes too.
That's a guy that's probably going to get some more playing time, don't you think?
Why did number five jump?
Dude, you got to know.
You're in Rupp Arena playing a D1 team.
This is Kentucky.
You don't want to be on a poster.
Or maybe you wanted to be on a poster.
Yeah, he can frame it, put it in his house.
I played a Rupp Arena.
But there was also a sequence where he drove the length of the court,
thought he was going to have an easy layup.
He missed it, man.
I think the whole bench wanted that one to go in.
But I was encouraged by what I saw from him as well.
Yeah, the dunk was to play of the game.
that coast to coast could have been the second play of the game.
He ended up with 12.6 of 9 from the field.
Looks like about four rebounds.
He's got really good hands.
We think of Williams as the good passer.
But Garrison, he's got some flashing some pass,
and he looks very comfortable inside,
kind of finished with both hands.
The three-pointer, though.
Let's just keep that in the bag, maybe.
You got to try it.
You got to let one fly.
One was enough.
He went 0 for two last week against Wesleyan,
missed one tonight.
Overall, a good game for Garrison,
though, filling in for Williams,
who, as we noted, will hopefully be back soon.
Speaking of being back soon, were you saying it's already break time?
It is. So let's give the phone number again.
Yeah, this flies by.
We'll take some of these calls.
859-280287.
Local Toyota Dealer's KSR Postgame Show.
Drew Franklin, Billy R. Sports, after Kentucky just whooped
Minnesota State, the fighting Myron Metcalf's 98 to 67.
We'll be right back.
Welcome back to the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show.
This is not the voice of Matt Jones or the voice of Ryan Lemon.
It's the voice of Drew Franklin.
I'm filling in for those guys hosting the show for the first time with my dear friend, Billy Rullidge.
Give us a call at 859-2-80-2287.
We want to hear from you about the game.
All the things you thought were fun in this 31-point blowout of the defending Division 2 national championship.
Billy, I hear we have full lines.
But first, just a couple notes.
Shout out to Alan Keller.
Alan Keller, who sits by me at the game, gave me a piece of advice, you know,
hosting a post-game show, having to do a little bit of monologue.
He just texts me and said, you could do a radio show if you wanted to.
It's almost like you do one every morning.
Well, I'm the sidekick guy.
I just kind of chom in when I have to.
But no, I appreciate that.
No, you're doing a great job starting off.
I'm also watching a video of myself on YouTube right now recapping the game.
I think I work too much, Billy.
I'm on YouTube.
Watch our rapid reaction later.
Don't watch it now because you should be listening to us here.
There's just a lot going on in this postgame.
While he's doing the postgame show, he's working on stories to publish on Kentuckysportsradio.
dot com and right now Brian and Houston chimed in and said if Drew was any higher in the
stands we should call him Snoop Dog.
They got us pretty hop there.
That actually reminds me of story from tonight that I don't know if I should say on radio,
but here we are.
What time is it?
1010?
Yeah, that's fine.
Next to the Rock Castle County Middle School basketball folks, after they headed down,
there were still a few people up in Section 2306.
Still a couple up there with their binoculars?
Older man comes up to me.
I sit right on the edge of Press Row up there.
He grabs a hold of my arm.
Kind of startled him a little bit.
I'm sitting there.
I'm on K.
K is bored typing and now I got this guy holding my arm and he looks at me and says, Drew,
took a gummy before I got here.
I don't know if we're higher up here or if I'm higher up here and tapped on his head.
And that was our conversation.
So I hope that man got home safely.
I hope he had a good time at the game.
Oh, wow.
Exhibition games at Rupp Arena.
You never know.
I don't encourage that, but that happened.
Let's go to the phone months.
All right.
Let's start off with Josh.
Josh, thanks for calling in.
Did you enjoy the game?
Oh, man.
Yeah.
How are y'all?
We are excellent.
What would you like to talk about?
Well, I really enjoyed not hearing the coach on the sideline scream go the entire time.
I don't know if you've noticed that, but on the TV, well, I guess you've been at the game.
But on the TV broadcast, you don't hear him screaming go the entire time.
You don't hear him at all, and it's awesome.
Not a lot of goes.
Seems to be a lot more encouragement, a little positive reinforcement.
I don't get close enough to actually hear the Pope Antics.
as Billy just noted.
They look fun down there, but it is a different experience.
He crashed Brandon Garrison's interview afterwards, had fun there.
As we mentioned before, took his shoes off in the press conference to show off those new
Devon Bookers.
It's just a different experience with Pope out there.
Oh, yeah.
Like, I've been watching, I watched both games on the computer, as Matt says, and I have not
heard him yell one time.
And it's honestly refreshing.
Like, I'm here for it.
I'm here for every bit of it.
I love it.
Well, we appreciate that call.
You know, there's not a lot of yelling to do when you win 9867, Billy.
Might have yelled a little bit in that first stretch,
but there might be days where Pope has to turn up the yelling.
Yes, and we kind of talked about this off the air,
but probably a good idea that Pope doesn't pull somebody from the crowd
during his post-game press conference every time.
You know, maybe if somebody's taking a gummy,
maybe I asked the wrong thing once or twice.
So while that was a great gesture, the first game, we may not see that again.
I did enjoy that.
you if that was going to be a routine, you did note that putting random strangers from the crowd
on the radio is not something that the UK Sports Network wants to do all the time.
With the dump buttons there, but everybody at Rupp Arena would still hear everything that's
going out. But this has been a fun start to the Mark Pope era. There's no doubt.
I did catch a little bit of his postgame stuff. He said, wasn't the prettiest game we've ever
played. When they went two for 11 from three, though, he said he wasn't nervous. That's going to
happen. He said fans were panicking a little bit, but that'll happen.
from time to time. Also called out offensive rebounding, says that needs to improve.
And then, of course, the Amari Williams update we gave earlier was the biggest news at a
Pope's press conference. Williams will get some x-rays, but Pope's pretty optimistic that he'll
see him again soon. Who will we see again soon on the phone line, Billy?
How about UK Greg? Oh, it's a great name. How you doing, UK, Greg?
Hey, man, it's such an honor to be on the Drew Franklin post-game show. Remember
Chevrolet gets you there and Toyota gets you home. Hey, two things real quick, Drew. How about
that dunk Perry Stevenson like, but I mean, he just come down the lane and he just threw it
down, Garrison did.
Loved it, loved it.
That was our play of the game.
We were just wondering why anyone would jump and try to defend that, but that young man
number five from Minnesota will now have a photo he can show his kids later in life.
And one other question, I don't know if you know this or not, and I don't know, it just,
my son just said it to me.
Kreeza having his first name on the back of his jersey.
You think it's a European thing to where a lot of soccer guys do that?
I mean, that's pretty interesting.
It is.
We appreciate the call.
I can't remember seeing that in college basketball.
Someone told me I'm trying to get evidence here.
Adam Luckett chimed in that said, yeah, here it is.
Here's a picture.
He did it at Arizona, too.
Oh, he did.
Yeah, so Kerr's going with his first name on the back of the jersey.
Didn't know you had an option.
I thought it just had to be your last name.
Could be European.
Also, it's weird seeing the number 77 on the basketball court.
the white headband too.
He is just his own animal,
and I absolutely love it.
He hit a three at the end of the first half,
and probably the reason why you didn't see a lot of Travis Perry tonight.
That's exactly why I didn't see a lot of Travis Perry.
Kerr did not play against Wesleyan.
He had a tweaked hamstring.
It was a game-time decision.
I thought they might even hold him out.
Just, you know, it's an exhibition game.
We'll get him next week.
But no, he checked in early, played a lot.
Six assists, zero turnovers.
We like that.
had a beautiful no look pass to Andrew Carr for a dunk.
So is he like the closest to Lance Ware on the roster
than anybody as like in that enforcer role,
like get under your skin,
get a technical foul?
I think we're going to learn that he is one of a kind.
I don't think there are going to be any comparisons.
He's not going to play defense like Lamont Butler,
but his defense is get up under your chin,
take charges,
clap in your face,
taunt you,
annoy you to death.
We didn't see that tonight,
but do you know who they play on November 12th,
November 12th, who's that, Drew?
That is the Duke Blue Devils.
Oh, yeah.
I want him to out Duke Duke at their own game.
I want him to be so obnoxious in that game that they hate him.
Yeah, I'm going over.
Point five punches thrown at Kirk Creeza this year.
I mean, that's over.
You think so?
Oh, way over.
Before we even get to Christmas.
What about the headband?
I love it.
I mean, more, I'm a headband guy.
Me too.
I used to rock a headband.
DeMarcus cousins?
Was that with the Madison County Maroons golf team headband?
Madison County, I'll give you a chance to fix that.
Yes. Hopkins County.
Madisonville, Kentucky, the best town on earth.
Who are some other Kentucky players who wore headbands?
DeMarcus cousins?
Yeah, I got DeMarcus, Willie.
Willie's a good one.
Michael Porter wore one for a game.
Do you remember Michael Porter?
It's okay if you don't.
Tie-tie Washington wore a headband.
Good call. Tie-tie.
That was recent.
That's the best I can do.
That's four.
I didn't even think I'd get that.
Who's next on the phone list?
James is next.
James, do you wear a headband?
What's going on, Drew?
How are you doing tonight?
I am wonderful because I'm here talking to you about a Kentucky 31 point win.
It was a great win.
First, I want to shout out, Ms. Kelly McDowell,
the Bond That Bridge, so to speak, Facebook page.
It wasn't for her.
I wouldn't be able to be at the game tonight.
She had an extra ticket that I bought up of her.
It was a great game.
And then I was able to watch KSR Rep, Rep, Reaction outside,
which was probably the best part.
Love you and Jack Pilver,
and the stuff you all do after the game.
Thank you for following along.
Saw you out there.
Saw Kelly out there.
I'm glad you got to go to the game.
That was very nice of Kelly to share the ticket with you.
We appreciate the call.
We had a lot of fun doing that rapid reaction.
Like I said, everyone, check that out later.
Our friend Jacob Polichick, you know, Jacob?
Yeah, yeah, of course.
He signed an autograph tonight.
I was so happy.
It was beautiful.
Jacob out there sounding autographs.
That's just how big the rapid reaction is getting.
We got Jacob out there signing things from KSR Plus.
Yeah, you guys do a great job,
and who knows what's happening in the background of your video.
We had a lot going on.
The moment you try to get a thought out, someone's jumping in.
We had our friend with a mullet come back tonight.
Lots of fun out there.
But that's for another time because we're having fun right here.
Who's up next?
Lee is up next.
Lee, thanks for calling in.
Hey, Drew.
Good evening.
How are you doing?
Doing well.
Lee.
Hey, good.
Listen, it sure is nice to be able to listen to all the post-game show and then coming to KSR.
I couldn't stand listening for the last few years
because for certain reasons,
but it's good to have you all on.
I enjoy what you're doing.
I want to talk about the key of this team,
and I think you're going to agree with me.
I think it's Lamont Butler.
What a beast on defense.
You know, point guards are most important things.
You know, it gets hands on a ball,
goes through screens.
What do you think about that?
I think you said exactly what I'm thinking,
and I appreciate that call.
I love Lamont Butler.
I think I'm still going to.
to go with a Mario Williams will be my favorite player.
Just got a little soft spot for Mario Williams,
but Lamont Butler is going to be special
defensively.
We're talking going back to Rondo, and even
Rondo, we're kind of looking at what he was in the
NBA. He was even flawed at college.
But Mark Pope
said on KSR earlier this summer,
I think his words were, I don't lose sleep over
guarding SEC guards. And when he said it,
I was like, well, you know, a little worried
about defense. If he's saying it, maybe
it's good. But after just watching
Lamont Butler, no one has passed,
is an all defensive player in his conference.
He is incredible.
The Stills records in jeopardy.
That's what I was about to say.
I mean, Rondo, watch out.
That Steele's record might be in jeopardy.
And he is just phenomenal.
He really is.
And with the experience that he has,
I'm sure that's helping the group a lot,
plays without fear,
and is somebody that could absolutely be the key.
Sam on Twitter wanted me to mention to you
that Lamont Butler ended with a plus 41.
That's nuts.
It's not just the steals, too.
He just, he's got the last.
lateral quickness and the strength just cut you off.
You're not going anywhere.
So, I mean, Kentucky, we'll see what the defense is going to be.
I think we all think that can be a weakness at times.
But there are many guards that are on,
that Lamont Buller is matched up with that are going to have a good night.
They'll be mismatched throughout the season.
I think Cooper Flag is going to be a big problem in that Duke game.
But I trust Lamont Butler guarding a lot of people.
He is going to be special defensively.
He is special defensively.
And then keeping his turnovers down, having the assist.
We'll see what that looks like as the.
competition gets better on the offensive end, but that defense is going to show up nightly.
Let's take one call, and then I think it's down for...
Thank you for leaving me. Thank you for holding my hand through this.
Who's next?
George.
Hello, George.
Hey, so one thing I saw tonight, actually, I guess I heard Coach Pope after the game saying
we earn all the baskets we get, and then he went right into player analysis.
And I can't wait for that season for a coach that looks at delections and everything else.
and he's looking at the numbers, and that's what he's going to coach.
I'm very excited about that.
I'm excited about that, too.
I'm not going to do too much looking backwards tonight.
We're looking forwards and about what happened in that game,
but the answers and press conferences and explanations of what happens in the game,
they're a lot clear.
In the past, it was, hey, how'd so-and-so play tonight?
Well, let me tell you about this other person.
Well, that's not what we asked about.
But, you know, we're getting a lot of...
What I meant was that he's going to take those numbers and go forward
and be an analytical coach.
I'm very excited about that.
Yeah, thank you.
Yeah, I appreciate the call.
I was about to add to that too.
And he is letting you know the game plan.
He's letting you know what their plan was coming in before.
Even Andrew Carr in his interview yesterday,
just so detailed in the other team,
what UK is trying to do.
Pope and this staff has given them so much information
and so many analytics.
I think the biggest difference in the change it's made
is the preparation for these games.
Now they obviously have to do that to overcom,
and they don't have the athleticism of past teams.
and different here and different there.
But I think the biggest difference where they'll find success
is just how prepared and how much information these guys have.
Yeah, I'm sure probably a little overwhelming at first,
trying to learn a new offense like that.
Jackson Robinson's alongside to help with that.
But it seems like they're starting to even now starting to get comfortable.
And Mark Pope was very candid about what they needed to work on,
especially rebounding in the offense of glass.
So it's night and day.
There's no doubt about that.
Combining our last talking points,
I just remembered Carr had a good quote on Lamont,
Butler in those interviews yesterday about his defense.
He said, he's a dog, he's an amazing defender, not just physical ability, it's mental,
and he's able to read someone on the ball, off the ball.
He's the best defender that I've ever seen for sure.
This is a guy that played ACC basketball.
He just does a great job of impacting what the other teams trying to do.
He's likable.
I mean, all the San Diego state fans I've seen are saying like treat Lamont Butler well.
We love him.
We want to see him well.
And he can do a Rubik's Cuban 44 seconds.
That's maybe the most impressive.
He said he's committed to defense because his AAU coach would bench him if the guy he was guarding scored.
So it's a pretty good training.
It's like Rick Petino asked.
Yeah.
He said, I wanted to stay in the game, so got to stop throwing on me.
On that note, let's take a break.
We've got to get these phone lines full again so we can hear from more of you on the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show.
That phone numbers 859-280-2287.
Let's say more exciting things about the cats when we get back.
Welcome back to the local Toyota dealers KSR postgame show.
Drew Franklin here with.
Billy R. Sports and downtown Lexington on a Tuesday night.
Got some corrections to make Billy.
Not correction, some additions.
UK players that wear headbands.
I forgot Oscar. That's embarrassing. How do you forget Oscar?
He just played. He's a fan favorite.
Seemed to always wear the headband. We dropped the ball on that one.
Yeah, those years feel like a fever dream. But that is a definite one. Oscar. Do you have any more?
I do. I owe someone an apology. I doubt he's listening.
But the victory cigar, Sam Malone.
Sam Malone. Our friend Sam Blanton.
submitted Sam Malone.
Both those guys, maybe the top two
headbands in Kentucky basketball history
and I have forgotten. Yeah, those are two big omissions
but you know what? You're worried
about a few things right now, Drew. I know you're locked
in, but did you happen to see the Yankees fan
try to rip the ball out of Mooky
Betts' glove during the World Series tonight?
I did that. I mean, ban that person from
just all events. What makes you
I mean, we had the guy reach over in L.A. in game
one. I kind of get it. You're in the
moment. You're wearing a glove as a
40-year-old man to a game. Ball
coming your way, you lean over, you shouldn't have, it happens.
This dude tries to pry it out of Mookiee Bet's hand.
Like, did his friend, it looked like it was a team effort,
it looked like somebody had Mookie's arm and he's reaching in his glove.
Yeah, his buddy came over and started holding his wrist.
What did we do?
Like they were just trying to get the ball out.
It was unbelievable.
This is Game 4 of the World Series.
And they just spent $3,000 a piece to get kicked out after a half an inning.
I'd say they won't be coming back too.
That was pretty aggressive.
They'll be millionaires in a week.
I understand the phone line's got a little funk.
What's going on over here?
I'm confused by these names.
Okay.
We got full lines.
Yeah?
But we have two guys on the phone, both named Kyle,
and they both said that they were named after Kyle Macy.
So let's take these guys back to back.
How about that?
All right.
Kyle Macy won.
You're on the line.
I'm Jay Shadler.
How you doing?
So I guess that I'm Kyle Macy one here.
Yes.
Kyle is on the line.
Yeah, I was born in 83.
My brother's a lot older than me.
He remembers watching the 78 championship team.
And so he convinced my parents to name me after
Kyle Macy. So your
full name is Kyle Macy?
No, I didn't get the middle name.
No, different middle name, but no,
they named me after Kyle Macy.
Beautiful.
Yeah. You rocked the socks?
Yeah, so, what's that?
Got the long socks?
Yeah, long as I rubbed my socks for every free throw.
Yeah, right?
Yeah, for sure, for sure.
What you got for us?
Hey, that's what I call in. I wanted to say,
talking about the game tonight and watching this
first play exhibition games, you know, when I watched
this offense, and somebody might have said it before, but they remind me of like the championship
run San Antonio Spurs where just they kept on driving. They had a good shot. They kept on passing
for another better shot and a better shot and a better shot. And it is just so nice to see,
especially after, you know, I love Cal, but he wasn't much of an ex with another's coach and just didn't
have that kind of offense at all. And so it is thrilling to see. I think honestly we can win it all
with this team, even not having top tier talent like we've had in the past. I think we can win it all
easily just because everybody can shoot just about and they're totally selfless with the with the
game and also i watched highlight um i saw where brandon garrison dunked on that dude it reminded me
a little bit it made me sad reminded me a little bit of uh dandre jordan dunking on my boy brandon
way back in the day but that was crazy to see i'm so psyched this year and excited and it's great
to see especially how much after watching a really crappy football team all year long it's great
to see our boys in blue basketball uh balling out like that's great to see our boys in blue basketball uh balling out like
Well, I have a question for you before you go.
You think they can win the title.
Well, Kyle Macy won a title, and you were named Kyle Macy.
If this team wins a title, which player would you name a future kid?
Wow, good question.
Oh, my goodness.
I would probably name my future kid after Kerr.
Kerr-Kreisa all day.
Dude's got attitude.
I would name my kid.
I might have another one.
If we win the title, I'll have another one.
I'll name him Kerr.
All right.
And I'll raise my little Otega Oway.
with you at the same daycare.
You can get one, Billy.
Well, all our friends will play.
All our kids will play together.
Thank you for calling in.
Appreciate the call.
And I completely agree with the ball movement.
You know, Cal's dribble drive works really well or worked really well.
Not going to hate on that too much.
When he had the right players, the dribble drive, it worked.
This is completely different.
And it is beautiful to watch.
I'm sure the basketball, purists, or love it.
The callers right.
Spurs was a good comparison.
They seem to always make the right pass.
The extra pass goes back to what Pope said, or while they were struggling in the first.
half. He said we weren't playing for each other. That's what he means, Billy.
I'm just excited for all the little Otegas and curs across the Commonwealth after a national
title. I'm excited for another Kyle named after Kyle Macy. Kyle Macy number two. Let's check him out.
What's up, Kyle Macy number two? This is Rick Roby. What's going on, Drew? What's going on, Billy?
I'm going to have to give it to Kyle Macea number one. That wasn't born until 94, so he's got
he's got the heads up on me on that one. Well, you're still named after a great wildcat.
absolutely so I had two two players that came to mind on the headbands didn't uh Tyler
Uis and Devin Booker rock him every once in a while oh Booker threw one on did you did
Eulus have one I don't remember one but I'm gonna believe he rocked I think I thought he rocked one
a few games he could late in the season possibly but I don't know I wasn't sure but I'm
Googling it right now I see him wearing one for the Kings I'm still looking for one when he
was with the cats but go ahead what I wanted to add was uh what do you think about Lamont
butler as a comparison to like a Chris Paul type player um I need to say if we're thinking
offensively and distributing the ball I think Chris Paul is pretty special and I need to see a
little more competition with Mont Butler but defensively yes I like that comparison yeah that's what
I was thinking I just wanted to call in for the first time since it was your first post game
show so I just want to appreciate both you all and Billy I tagged you in Facebook last night I was at
malones for the uh Mark stoop show oh yeah yeah that's uh
That's good on you for seeing that.
Unfortunately, Stoops was not there, but Vince Mara held the fort down.
So we appreciate you support, Kyle.
Absolutely.
Thanks, guys.
Thank you.
We appreciate the call.
Yeah, five assists, one turnover for Mont Butler.
He is sharing the rock and not turn it over.
With that kind of thing, I need to see it done against some different competition.
So far, so good for sure.
Yeah.
No, it's nice to have a defensive enforcer like that.
I'm really excited to see him go up against some of these bigger schools.
Yeah, tonight he had six points on four shots.
It is only three.
Pope even said he's special.
I think that's what I just said.
Pope stole it for me.
Who's up next?
Chris is next.
Chris, who are you named after?
Chris Gettlefinger.
Yeah, there it is.
Where you got for us from the game.
There you go.
There you go.
Hey, you're still there.
I think.
Yeah.
I forgot what I was going to say.
That's okay.
We'll just talk through it.
It's about a certain player.
You're doing a great job, Drew, and you haven't screamed at anybody for talking in the background that I can't hear.
But I thought Tyler summed it up best than I in a tweet when she said this team has spurtability.
What was that word?
Furdability.
They can spurt on you.
Oh, I'm with you.
Spurability, okay.
Yeah, I had a hard time catching it.
They can struggle, and then they blow you out to them nothing.
It's a great point.
We appreciate the call.
Like we were saying, they almost gave up a little first half lead,
almost a little 23, 22.
Then you look up an 18-0 run, one of those spurts.
That spurtability you're referring to.
Like I said earlier in the show,
their last six field goals were three-pointers as they stretched that lead out
and put them away before halftime.
That was a nice spurt.
Got any more calls, Billy?
Or is it break?
Let's take two more, and then we'll take a break.
Okay, two more.
Who's up next?
Austin.
Austin.
What's up?
What's going on, guys?
Hey, how's it going, guys?
This is my first time ever calling.
Hey, it's my first time ever hosted.
A lot of first time.
Look at us.
Who would have thought?
I know, this is great.
So I just kind of wanted to get your thoughts on, like,
now that we've had a little bit more competition, I guess, in a way,
how do you think we're going to do against Duke,
and who do you think is going to guard Cooper Flag?
And I'll hear you guys' thoughts on that.
Thank you.
We appreciate your first call.
That is a great question,
and that is one I've been thinking about often, Billy.
Cooper Flag is going to be a bit of a problem for the cats.
I'm not like a lot of the fan base who's just surrendering that game to Duke.
We know people in our lives, some even on our radio show,
that just think the cats are in trouble in that game.
I think the cats have a good chance,
but Cooper Flag, no doubt, will be a problem.
To answer his question,
you put Lamont on him?
He's 6-8 versus 6-2 in that situation.
I know. Lamont's got guards to log down.
Duke's got three top 15 picks.
and the latest mock draft, so Lamont will have his own price.
I mean, I've heard Amari Williams mentioned,
but the way he can stretch it out and his athleticism,
I don't know, like you said, he's 6-9, 205, maybe Otega can hang with him.
It's honestly going to be a team effort,
but I mean, that's the big question mark in that dude game.
I don't hate the matchup overall,
and I think Kentucky will be in that.
But Cooper Flagg, that dude was a robot that was made in a laboratory,
projected number one pick, and it's just going to be a mismatch.
Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about that guy.
And he's from Maine.
You were just in Maine.
I was.
It's weird
having elite basketball
player from Maine.
I was up there.
Not a lot of basketball
being played.
Some elite lobster
catchers.
You taking lobsters
straight from the ocean
into the restaurants?
Fade this,
people know all about that
about my lobster history,
my crimes.
Your crimes
against the lobsters.
Listen to Fade this.
Who's up next,
Billy?
Roman is next.
Roman.
Thank you for calling in.
What do you got?
Hey, Drew,
first of all,
you're crushing it.
I think you need
replace Matt full time. I love the vibes right now. It's awesome. Thank you. I appreciate that.
We won't time. And I know it's an exhibition game and, you know, we're all excited and stuff.
But how nice is it to have a coach? Not only that lets the players figure it out whenever things aren't going right,
but then also to have a system that allows the players to figure it out. You guys touched on it on the YouTube stream.
And I think that's perfect, you know, point you guys made on that, which is like Cal in the past with just yank a kid out.
If, you know, he wasn't performing well and it would just kind of reject his whole confidence and stuff.
And it felt like tonight Pope just really let them figure it out, let them work through it.
You know, having juniors and seniors, I mean, that's what you get.
And I think that's a nice change of pace.
You know, I'll happily trade some of the superstar guys that we've had in the past for just a team that can go out there.
And when it's not, the shots aren't falling, can actually, you know, work through that.
And I'll hang up now.
Thank you.
It's a great point.
I think you nailed it.
It's a combination of the experience guys who are coachable.
It's not freshmen that are just getting here.
They're a little wide-eyed.
they're in Kentucky.
They're looking at the mock drafts.
You've got guys that have played a lot of basketball.
And Pope's just got that positive energy.
A lot of it's just his personality.
It just comes out as coaching.
These players absolutely love him.
Not that players didn't love Cal.
I'm not trying to make this a cow thing.
But, I mean, they love playing for Pope and the way he coaches.
Yeah.
And I think that, you know, that trickles down from Mark Pope to the rest of the team,
the appreciation of the Jersey, understanding what it means to play at
Kentucky. You know, I think that definitely
trickles down to these guys and they
and they really see how much it means to Mark Pope and then
then when you have a
motivation like that, you take pride in your work, Drew, right?
You do the little things right.
That's right. You hit the line.
You hit the line with your hand or your toe instead of
stopping just short. That was a talking point for
Pope early on, wasn't it?
Pope even motivated me with a quote
in one of those practice clips we got back in August.
What do you say? Do you remember? I'm trying to Google it so
I don't butcher it because I would definitely butcher it.
Something like gratitude is a skill.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
And if you practice it, it will give you a joyful life or something like that.
He talks a lot about gratitude.
I was driving around like, yeah, I need to be more grateful.
Gratitude is a skill.
We should work on our gratitude.
That's just an example of Pope.
It seems like he's a big quote guy.
You've been in the building.
It used to be, look at all our NBA draft stars.
They have like those motivational posters everywhere.
Like those cheap ones you used to get in the office have like a golf course.
And then it says, you know, whatever.
It's a little cat and it's like hanging there.
Yeah, yeah.
Pope reads a lot of those, but he's got some good lines.
And I think that bleeds out in his coaching, and it's why players like playing for him.
No, I agree.
Gratitude is a skill, Billy.
So is producing this show, and you're looking at me like we need to go to break.
We do.
We do need to go to break.
Well, I'm grateful for this break.
And when we come back, we'd like to hear from more callers on the KSR Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show through KSR in there twice.
859-9-2-8-7.
Drew Franklin and Billy R Sports.
We'll be right back.
Welcome back to the local Toyota Dealer's KSR postgame show.
8, 5,9, 2802-87, although I think we have full phones, and this is our last segment.
Got a lot of more people to talk to, Billy, as we wrap this up,
after your University of Kentucky Wildcats beat the Minnesota State University,
Mancato Mavericks, the Myron Metcalf's, a lot of Ms, 98 to 67,
another fun blowout for the cats in their final tune-up preseason game
before it gets really real next Monday with the season debut.
let's just get straight to the phone lines and then we'll wrap this up and call today on this 16-hour workday, Billy R. Sports.
All right, we got six callers. Let's go through them and we'll call it tonight.
Who's up first?
Cat Daddy.
Cat Daddy.
Good name.
You over there doing the Cat Daddy, Cat Daddy?
Hey, really excited that I got through on your first post-game show.
I'm excited you did too.
I just want to share again why I'm excited about this season.
Mark Pope got given a unique opportunity and the fact that he had no roster.
And so the 2015 team was the best team I've ever seen.
But Mark Pope got to go out and build a roster where we have a answer for everything.
Now, it's not a superstar answer.
And there's going to be nights that we're going to get out talented.
But we scored on an inbound split.
We ran an in-bounds play tonight.
What?
I stood up and had a parade in front of my TV.
We scored on an in-bounds play.
We did, and he has a Swiss Army knife of a coachable team
because he got to build it,
and we have one or two people at every position.
Now, they're not superstars,
and there's knives that we're going to get out talented,
but I think this is going to be a fun game,
a fun team to watch.
And the other thing is,
I'm already excited about watching
how fun it's going to be to see Coach Pope
coach this team
because he has so many possibilities.
Well said, Cat Daddy.
We appreciate the call.
Thanks for calling in for my first post-game show.
He's right about the inbounds play.
For a while, I didn't even think those were legal.
I didn't know you could do those.
What is this witchcraft out here?
It's something new.
But let me ask you, as much as we loved Aduthierro and Big Z,
Are you kind of glad that it was a fresh slate for Pope to build the roster,
or do you think these guys would have had a place here?
I'm not going to change my tone just because it didn't work out that way.
I wanted Big Z and a do back.
I said that when they were considering it.
They had a beautiful highlight at Arkansas that I won't lie,
tugged on my heartstrings a little bit.
I wish those two and DJ Wagner the best.
Not all of the best.
I know I wish them like the fifth best.
I want them to do well.
Not too well, though.
But I do miss those guys and no hard feelings for them.
I don't really know why I do made that move,
but I know why Big Z did.
Cal got him over here.
Kind of had to follow Cal.
But yeah,
I would have enjoyed seeing them stay,
especially Big Z.
He would have thrived in this situation.
And, you know,
he's still a cat.
Did Arkansas get him a billboard?
No, no, that's true.
In the middle of the semester,
did Arkansas do some paperwork to get him in school
when that,
I don't even really know how that works?
Did Arkansas put a billboard up?
To get him eligible from the NCAA, no.
That's why Big Z is still a cat to me.
He's just on loan down there in Fayetteville,
and he would have thrived in this Pope system.
We still had that behind the back pass.
We still had that.
That was, that was nice.
That one didn't finish, though, right?
I feel like...
No, it did.
Yeah, it was part of a magical moment.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Tonight there was a behind the back pass.
I think it was Lamont hit Cobbubria, I think,
and couldn't finish,
but that could have been a highlight reel tonight.
I was getting my behind the backs there confused.
Who's behind the next?
phone line. Doing good. Doing good. Good names this segment. Drew, so glad to be honored, to be on your first,
your first post game call-in show. I mean, that's just, it's like the birth of my children,
you know, getting married and being with you on the post game show. The top three moments of my
entire life, man. This is fantastic. I'm going to remember this phone call for the rest of my life,
so thank you. I got a couple of things here just real quick. First of all,
Usually by like the, you know, two exhibition games, maybe the first or two regular season
games, et cetera, I'm like zoned in on, like, who my absolute one or two favorite players
are going to be.
I have seen two full exhibition games, and my plate is like 12 players deep.
Can you all help direct me in a certain area at all?
I mean, who am I going to root for this year?
I'm a fan of everybody, and that's not how you.
usually am. I'm with you a little bit. I have narrowed it down from 12. There's 12 people on the
team. You do have to chisel out a few to have this conversation. I'm leaning a little towards
Amari Williams for my favorite, not saying he's the best, but I had fun interviewing this summer
talking about English breakfast and the Beatles. And then I love the way he passes and how they're
going to run the offense to the high post with him and what he brings defensively. I hope he gets back.
So I'm not committed to Mari Williams. I'm leaning that way a little bit. But I mean,
Lamont Buller would be a good pick. I think Kerr, we have a good pick. We have a
I haven't seen enough of him yet.
He'll be a good pick.
Jackson Robinson looks like Clay Thompson.
He could be a good pick.
You have so many options.
Well, I figure Robinson is like an automatic for the NBA.
So I kind of want to root for someone that maybe won't be like a top,
you know, like a first round pick or something.
So I'm like definitely Butler.
I mean, he's got to be in there.
But Garrison, I mean, there's like, they're like 10 guys that's like
that are going to be so much fun to root for.
I don't know where it's going to be.
going to go. And I just want you guys to know real quick. I'm going to be rectifying a wrong to make a
right because I think that Billy winning the hay bell tossing contest this year was amazing. I'm going
to call in on Monday morning to the pregame show. And at some point from like Tuesday to Friday,
we will be making that a huge, a huge sport story because it deserves its spotlight. I don't think
it was given that because I think Matt
kind of like wanted to overlook it,
but we're going to bring that back to the forefront.
So, but long story short,
Drew, thank you so much for hosting, man.
You're a great job. I hope you do a few
more. I'm proud of you on here with you
tonight. And Billy, I got your back.
We'll talk to you later on, man.
Thank you for those kind words and for calling in.
Call the night. A lot of kindness here. Also,
I'm looking right at
Billy's Haybill trophy. He is in this studio.
Yeah, it lives in this studio.
It looks good, Billy.
You know, I left for vacation that day.
I didn't really get to tell you how proud I was.
I picked you up.
You did.
And I'll admit my back hurt for three days, not from the throwing mine a couple yards,
but I think from picking you up.
But I was proud of you that day.
I'm glad we found that alternate camera angle of you picking me up like we had just won the Super Bowl.
You deserved it.
It was a great moment in my life.
Do you think Shannon could have even picked you up?
Please, Shannon couldn't even throw it.
Two yards, let alone pick me up.
What a great moment.
Billy R. Sports History. Who's up next? Don.
Don, thanks for calling in.
Drew, first of all, I want to say it's an honor and a privilege to be on with you tonight.
You're doing a fantastic job hosting your first post-game show.
I especially love your little shout-out to Mr. Jay Shadler, the bomb bomber.
I had a lot to talk about the game, but to be honest with you, when you mentioned his name,
I had the great honor and privilege of working with that man for three years in the first three years of the
Lexington Legends baseball team.
He and I worked together in the Maker's Mark Club.
He was kind of a manager overseeing.
I was the bartender in there.
And great guy brought back a lot of great memories of getting to hang out with him
and getting to hear him to tell old UK stories and even got to play a few rounds of golf with that guy.
He's an amazing guy with a lot of UK history.
And hearing you say that brought back a lot of great memories.
I like the shout out.
I read his book, Blondon.
Balmer, a ride was shot. One of my
best friends, his dad, Bobby Bird
Townsend, shout out to Bobby Bird Townsend.
I asked him his UK Mount
Rushmore last year at the North
Carolina, Kentucky game in Atlanta.
We're just hanging out afterwards. Just, you know,
boys chatting. He had Jay Shodler
in his all-time Mount Rushmore. I thought
that was pretty unique.
With Anthony Davis, Danisle,
and somebody else.
And some of the stories
he regaled to me about UK basketball,
you know, I was, I wasn't
alive when they were putting their little run together.
But, man, hearing him tell stories about all those old ex-UK guys and Joe B.
It was pretty great.
And I'm very thankful for that time of my life.
All right.
Glad you could share that.
Do you have anything you want to share about the game?
They're just a blonde bomber.
Yeah, I tell you one thing that I was really oppressed about that nobody's really
brought up yet is every game.
I'm more and more impressed with Colin Chandler.
not only his athleticism, but the guy has got some handles.
I mean, he took some guys off the perimeter tonight, whether it led to an assist or him scoring a bucket.
And I thought, wow, this kid's got some potential.
Oh, yeah, I completely agree.
He had a couple of flashy assists tonight in the second half.
Seven points, two and five.
His three-point shot wasn't falling.
I think it went one for four there.
But there's a lot of potential with him, especially for a guy that's just coming back from two years off from basketball.
Yeah, even though that three-point shot's not falling just yet, he's got good form, and I think
that's going to come around, and I think his athleticism overall is going to get him some
playing time this year at certain points when we need a little spark off the bench, and I'm
really impressed with his overall game.
Me too.
I agree, and I appreciate the call.
He hasn't really flashed in the two exhibitions, but in the blue-white game, that shot was
falling, Billy, and he dunked on somebody's head, so I think the blue-white preseason event was
the biggest moment for him.
for Chandler. I don't know where he'll fit
in because there's so many pieces, kind of in that
similar position. A lot of guys, a lot of minutes, and I think
Pope's going to share as much as he can with all those guys.
But Chandler, you're looking to the long term. That dude's
a player. Yeah, I think many thought
there may be a little rust, but there's
a reason why this guy was such a highly
rated recruit coming out of high school.
And, you know, who knows, he may play
his way into some playing time. But that's a guy
that could develop and be a pretty good
player at the next level maybe one day.
Yeah, speaking of developing, Trent, Noah's playing a lot of
minutes. Can we talk about him for a second? Because you guys were talking about like favorite players. And I keep thinking he's not going to be a factor. And then he does what he does in the first exhibition game. He hits a three to start the big run in the first half in tonight's game. And while they may be exhibition games, you know, him coming out to the Harlan song. I don't know. I'm really liking me, a little Trent Noah and a little Travis Perry as well.
Listen, Trent Noah doesn't need any more fans because half of Rup Arena is from East of Kentucky cheering for number nine.
I can't.
He has a long line of fans due to his hometown.
That's great to hear.
I like having these Kentucky guys on the roster.
There's no doubt.
He's another one.
His numbers throwing me off.
I'm not used to it.
He's number nine.
We all know why.
Also adding to him being a fan favorite.
But this is the first year you can wear numbers above five.
And it's weird seeing nine out there.
Andrew Carr, number seven.
And Kirkreeza, number 77.
Take us some getting used to.
But we'll see him on the court a lot.
We got any more calls?
Yeah, we got three more, and we'll end it.
uh, Ian is next.
Ian, thanks for calling in.
Drew, West Kentucky shout out.
I love having you on here because, uh, it's just, it's just a shout to the
western end of the state.
Um, one of these days, you're going to have an old man post game show at, at Farrell's
and either Madisonville or Katie's or somewhere and you're just, it's going to be,
it's going to, yeah, okay, well, that, that'd be good.
But the thing that I was impressed about tonight was that we did not look good in the first quarter, and we looked out of sorts, and yet when we came out of the quarter, we were still up.
We weren't down 15 points, and we didn't have to come back from a bad start.
We looked out of sorts, and yet we were still ahead.
Does that make sense from what we've been from the past couple years?
Like, we weren't playing great, but yet we were still playing good.
And I am so happy about that and where we are.
And I'm just so, I can't explain how happy I'm about where we are right now
as a program.
And I can't wait to beat Duke.
Love the call.
We appreciate it.
And you don't have to explain how happy you are because a lot of us are feeling
that feeling.
We're all very happy.
And you're right about the slow start.
again I love winning by 100 but that could be good for him
they had to learn how to play with out of Mara Williams
we don't want anybody getting hurt but it was good for them to have to see what
that's like hopefully he's back soon Pope said he's optimistic
it's 20 to 22 you give up a 3 to almost go down luckily it clings out
but then you go on a half time it's 43 to 23 I mean they had that 18 oh run
just completely lit them up and I think showing that diversity will be good for
well yeah just showing something that you can work on now Pope has some numbers he's
got some film. He can teach the guys for another week. And then you hit the ground running because
we're less than a week away from this season starting. The shots that we were taking weren't the
shots that we love. It's what he said. Let's take those shots that they love. Well, they're shooting
deep shots too. Jack was talking about that in the post game interview. He was like, I have to
readjust what I think is a good shot because Mark Pope wants a guy like Jackson Robinson to shoot
it from the next county like he did. I heard a little Jack on my walk over here from
Rupperey into the studio caught that part. I think Jack and Jay Shadler and all the
Kyle Macy's we've heard from. They didn't have the green light from that far out, but
Pope's given the green light to about everyone on this team, and Jackson Robinson has all
of the green lights. Get out of his way, let him shoot. We had somebody drop, so we just have
one call left, Drew. I got tired of waiting. I'm sorry. I thought we were going to have a moment,
whoever you were. But we have Nate on the line to finish things out. Nate, you are the last
caller on my first post-game show. I will remember this forever.
Wow, man.
Well, it's my first time calling in, so I appreciate you taking my call.
And, yeah, and so I just wanted to end it by, honestly, I want to get better at the skill of gratitude.
So just thought I'd practice a little bit of thankfulness with you.
I was just able to take my eight-year-old boy to the game tonight.
It was just like a really special moment.
It was a lot of fun.
It took me back to when the first team I started watching and really falling was at 96 team when I was 10 years old.
So had a buddy give me two tickets from work.
shout out PV. I appreciate you.
Appreciate you giving us the tickets.
And it was just like a really special moment.
We stuck around after the game.
Got to listen to Coach Pope's press conference.
He was able to, my son was able to get a Owen,
was able to get a ball signed by Pope.
And just watching Pope interact with the fans and just the way he was acting after the game.
I'm just really thankful.
I don't know if this is the Final Four team.
I think it could be.
I mean, I think we're on 40 and O.
I don't know.
But at this point, that's how I'm feeling.
But in the end, I'm thankful.
because I think this is going to be a really fun team to follow.
I'm thankful for that when they were missing a bunch of shots at the beginning of the game,
they didn't get tight, they kept shooting,
and you could just tell the way they're coached,
the way they kind of play with one another,
the way they're fundamentally sound and they, you know,
help side defense and making the extra pass.
It's just going to be a lot of fun to watch.
I'm thankful I'm going to share that with my son,
and it's something that we as BBN get a do together.
What a great last call.
We appreciate that call.
Thank you for sharing that.
I feel like there was a lot of kindness, a lot of gratitude.
I got a lot of compliments, made me feel good.
A lot of people said a lot of nice things.
What a great way to end on that, Billy.
I'm going to read Pope's quote one more time.
Can I do it?
Gratitude is a skill that if you practice will give you a joyful life regardless of your circumstances.
It's a skill we need to practice.
You can practice it every day because grateful people and joy.
Wait, we're grateful people and joyful people.
There's no way around it.
If you're grateful and joyful, it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor or famous or anonymous.
Are you grateful, Billy?
I'm very grateful.
I'm very thankful that you can't.
in to studio with me, Drew.
And all the first time callers tonight, I think they saw that you were doing your first
hosting job and they wanted to be a part of it.
Look at us.
All doing this together for the first time.
I enjoyed doing it with you.
Are you grateful you get to finally leave this place?
Oh, yes.
I've been here a while.
But, you know, it's double dip season, Drew.
We've got football.
We've got basketball.
It's not the time to shy away from something like this.
So we're ready.
We got the trophy right here.
A great philosopher once said Team No Sleep.
Duran Lamb.
It's kind of what we're having to do
this double-hutter season.
Not getting a lot of sleep.
Today was a long day, but it was a lot of fun.
I enjoyed Matt giving me this opportunity.
I appreciated that.
I like getting some shots up.
This is new to me, but I like the practice.
Had a lot of fun doing it.
Again, the cats won big.
98 to 67 beating Minnesota State.
Manit-something, Man-a-talk.
Help me out.
Man-a-toe.
Whatever.
The Mavericks.
It's good seeing them.
I'm sorry, Myron, Metcalf, for what we
did to your team. Up next, it gets real. No more playing around. No more exhibitions, no more
blue-white preseason events, madness, no more fancy courts with the screens. We get to
play in real basketball. The regular season begins on Monday at 7 p.m. in Rupp Arena, the real
debut of the Mark Pope era. We've had all these first, first media day, first pro day, first
interview, first everything, the first season, the first game, it all goes down Monday, playing
in Wright State, the fighting Julius Mases.
You remember Julius Maze?
Uh-huh, yeah, I'm familiar.
Came from Wright State.
A little thing about them, they got a lot of players back.
Oh, they're experienced.
Oh, yeah, yeah, they're pretty good.
Led the country and field goal shooting percentage last season.
Just a little, I don't want to give away all my secrets before Monday's show.
But it's a little look ahead to Wright State.
But for now, Billy and I are going to shut it down.
It's getting late.
We had lots of fun.
Thank you for listening to us on the local Toyota Dealer's KSR post-game show.
Have good night and go cats.
Great job, Drew.
Thank you.
