Starting point is 00:00:00 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where SportsSlice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories,
Starting point is 00:00:52 their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your And for more, follow Timbo Slica Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Clivert Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game.
Starting point is 00:01:16 This linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue 42. A rep. My mama want you to wave at her. What?
Starting point is 00:01:31 Where's he at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clifferts show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:01:50 We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was hiring. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Marquis come until he's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love.
Starting point is 00:02:05 This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Well, that stunk. I mean, there's no way to sugarcoat that. That was a tough one. That was a tough, tough loss at your home court. Rup reading of the crowd brought it.
Starting point is 00:02:25 It was rocking. Introduced your new head football coach. And you stunk it up. I mean, it was bad. It was a bad loss. It was a bad performance. Another way to say it. This is Ryan Lemon entered the local Toyota
Starting point is 00:02:38 to his KSR postgame show. For those that missed it earlier, we mentioned that Matt is out. His dad had a couple procedures today that he wanted to be there for his dad and with his mom. So he took the night off. And once again,
Starting point is 00:02:51 we got an ugly, awful postgame show to do. I mean, they couldn't score. In the second half, well, they went almost 10 minutes without a field goal. O for 13th from the field at one stretch, finish the game two of 16th from the field. Billy, you and me and Dave Baker
Starting point is 00:03:10 could get two guys off the street and we could score one bucket within 10 minutes. Yeah, and a team that's supposed to shoot 35-3s a game only made one tonight. And who had on their bingo card? The one three-pointer was hit all night was Brandon Garrison. DG. I'd tell if anybody predicted that one,
Starting point is 00:03:30 they need to go put all their money in the lottery. So look, we heard all summer how this was a great shooting team, how they couldn't miss, how Trent Noah, Cam Williams were just hitting 100 in a row, shooting 80% in practice from three. Where is it? Man, it's not around right now.
Starting point is 00:03:52 That stretch where they went 10 minutes without scoring a field goal was brutal, absolutely brutal. And here's, this is just, my opinion. You know, my dad was a coach. So I've watched a lot of basketball. And I've heard him say a million times. You're playing like you're behind.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Play like you're ahead. We had the lead. Yet we were playing like we were behind. Coming down, jacking up shots early in the shot clock, jacking up shots out of the offense. I mean, we could call some guys out, but it's obviously knows who it is. And if you watch the game, you saw when they had a six-point lead, We made one pass and shot a three-pointer.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Next trip down, we drove baseline through the same guy. His last name rhymes with Babberbean. So I don't know, man, it's frustrating. I mean, we can try to be funny about it, but nobody's happy. Nobody's in a good mood. My Twitter feed is just blown up with people upset with the coaches, with the players. You know, when you can't, you're not shooting the ball well,
Starting point is 00:05:00 and then you can't make a stop in crunch time on defense. you're not going to beat anybody. Or it's going to be hard to beat people. And I think that's just what happened. So now their first three big non-conference games, you lost all three of them. Louisville whooped you, Michigan State whooped you,
Starting point is 00:05:18 and North Carolina beat you on your home court. So out of the six non-conference games where we all pointed to, when most of us all said, they got to be at least four and two, maybe even five and one, you're o' and three. And oh, yeah,
Starting point is 00:05:31 you got Gonzaggotts coming up on four. Friday, maybe one of the top two teams in the country. I know they got beaten in that tournament out there, but they're still super, super good. So I don't know. And here's the frustrating thing is I don't see any answers. You can't go to the waiver wire. You got some of your stars sitting out there hurt still. I don't know what the heck's going on with Diabate.
Starting point is 00:05:57 So there's, how do you fix it? that second half Brandon Garrison and Cam Williams hardly played it all in the second half they may not even played a minute in the second half they may have been out there just briefly but Pope just went with
Starting point is 00:06:12 Aberdeen, Otega, Chandler, Yellovich and Marino and he ran with those five guys I think Noah got a little run out there and I don't know what's wrong with Trent man he's he's supposed to be your shooter I don't know if he's lost he's lost when he got heard, if he lost his confidence
Starting point is 00:06:32 and he's trying to find it again. I don't know. Just a heck of a lot more questions than answers right now after what we just watched. Billy, what were your thoughts on running the board listening to that mess? Well, it's our late one, right? So these late games we're always in for a long haul.
Starting point is 00:06:49 We get a little slap happy at the end. It's the first loss under Pope where the opponent scored less than 70 points. So it's a little bit of an odd game than what we've mostly seen. but you said how is this what's going to change? I mean, doesn't getting back a Jalen Lowe, Jaden Quaiton, Sinimo Diabate changed this team, or was this still a game that Kentucky should have won?
Starting point is 00:07:12 I think they definitely should have won the game. Without a doubt. You got a six-point lead. You got to protect instead of come down and jack up shots out of the offense early in the shot clock. You've got to be smarter than that. We made some not very smart decisions. But you made it a good point.
Starting point is 00:07:26 The question is, how do you fix it? You got to get low in Quaton's back. I don't know about Diabate, what's going on with him. But if you get those three guys back, I think you're a different team. You really are a different team. So maybe that is the answer. So I want to read this tweet. It came from Cody Couch.
Starting point is 00:07:42 All right. He tweets a lot of pretty good stuff. And their last eight ranked matchups. So when they're playing a ranked team, Kentucky is one in seven. This year, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina, lost, lost, loss. They were one in five last year, one in four last year,
Starting point is 00:08:07 0 and 3 this year, one in seven in their last eight ranked matchups. Got to win the big games, man. I mean, early in the season last year, we beat Duke, Gonzaga, you know, got some of those non-conference wins. Then we got to the SEC, Tennessee, Bama, Missouri, Auburn,
Starting point is 00:08:25 they beat us all. So I don't know. It's not going to be in a pretty couple of days. You know, we had all this great celebration. I mean, Will Stein was there, Billy. They introduced Will Stein. He set courtside with his wife watching his first game as Kentucky head football coach. Tashon Prince was there, Billy.
Starting point is 00:08:46 They did two whys. It was such an exciting night. They did a Y in the first half with Will Stein. They did a Y in the second half with Tashon Prince. And you still stunk it up. That second half was awful. I mean, that was some awful basketball in that second half. Well, Kentucky couldn't grab a rebound.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I mean, the offensive rebounds, UNC had 20. 20 offensive rebounds, and they got like, what, 22 second chance points, something like that. And Kentucky had eight offensive rebounds, five second chance points. Eight assists to nine turnovers for Kentucky tonight. That's huge. We thought this team when they played Purdue, they were passing the ball so well. The assist to turnover ratio was great. That's awful.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Eight assists, nine turnovers. again, that may go back to we need Jalen Lowe. We need that point guard. Aberdeen is a better guard off the ball. What was he tonight? Who? Denzel? He was 4 of 13. It felt like he was 4 of 20. He takes some bad shots.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Jasper probably needs some more minutes. You know, Jasper, I think, took a couple shots. Maybe he shouldn't have, but he's so good he can get in the lane. And once he gets in the lane, then he's got either shoot it or lobby. it up to somebody. Yeah, I don't know about Jasper, but Yellovich is somebody that should be seeing a lot more minutes. I thought, you know, he needed to rebound better, but he played some pretty good ball tonight, Ryan. He was the player of the game and sat down with Jack Givens and deservedly
Starting point is 00:10:12 so, because not only did he do what he needed to do offensively, he was the guy on Caleb Williams most of the game, especially in the second half. Caleb Williams was quiet. What do you end up with, like 13 points? He had nine most of the game. He couldn't even get double figures. And a lot of that is due to Yelovich's defense. Yeah, Caleb Wilson had 15 points, 12 rebounds, 5 of 19 from the field. He was plus 4 and 35 minutes. I mean, for the most part, you did what you needed to do against him. But that's the tallest team in the country, according to Ken Palm.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And you could tell by the rebounding numbers tonight. So we want to hear from you. If you're still up, if you're driving home, I saw the traffic back up on Newtown Pike that was coming in. I'm in studio with Billy. We want to hear from you, 859-280-2287, 859-2-8-8-9-2-8-8-9-2. 8-0 cats. Yuck. Awful.
Starting point is 00:11:02 This is what I said after the Louisville football loss on Saturday. We've had a rough couple days. Going with the Vanderbilt football loss, the Louisville football loss. Now there's North Carolina loss. Pitiful. Pitiful. We'll be right back. This is the local total leaders.
Starting point is 00:11:17 KSR post game show. All right. Welcome back. The local total leaders KSR post game show. Apparently the 630 a.m. feed is maybe. be on the alien show right now, Billy? It's late.
Starting point is 00:11:32 You know, the alien show needs to be played. It's late. The Gremlin's in there in the control room or running on the spinning wheel as fast as they can. We're working on it, though. We're working on it. So the 630 feed was having some issues, but the 84 WHAS feed apparently is fine. Is that right? Yeah, yeah, I believe so.
Starting point is 00:11:49 So are we on like the regular signal on 630 or is it just a streaming feed? Yeah, that I don't know about 630. but you know I understand the transmitter is as frustrated as we are tonight Ryan well the transmitter must be a Kentucky basketball fan and we watched that game and decided to check out like and here one more thing I wanted to get for go to the phone line yeah we got a good shot at the end of the game Chandler Beatty's man went baseline he had he you know he got to the rim just couldn't get it to fall he you know that left handed but he hit one left hand and coming underneath just right couple minutes a couple seconds
Starting point is 00:12:26 before that. So I felt, you know, I'm not upset with the last shot we got. It was there and he just couldn't get it to drop. And I thought we saw some signs of the old Otega Oway. The old Otega, I saw glimpses of him tonight, you know, where as soon as he gets the ball, boom, straight to the basket, went hard. Now, he missed a couple that he should have, I should have hit, but I think old Otega is coming back.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Yeah, Goose was talking about that and how he wasn't getting the ball enough. Yeah. In that 10-minute stretch where Kentucky really didn't score. So maybe look for him to continue to do that moving forward. And that's where I'm telling you, man, they were playing like they were behind. You had the lead. You had a six-point lead. You're at home.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Play smart basketball. All right. I ran it enough. Who's our first caller, Billy? Mark is up first. Mark, go ahead, Mark. Yeah, we keep talking about missing three of our starters. But, you know, I think one of those guys wasn't with us last year, hasn't started a game
Starting point is 00:13:26 this year, Carolina's out there point guard. You know, there's no crime. There's wins and losses. And we're just looking bad, guys. Thank you, Mark. Appreciate it. Yeah, their little point guard at, what was he named, Derek Price, hit the last shot there at the end of the game,
Starting point is 00:13:45 Derek Dixon. I mean, he just does his job. You know, he's a past first point guard, but he hit the big three, then he hit the drive to basically win the game for him. Tough, tough competitor, man. He was good. Our point guards are taking bad shots, Russian shots.
Starting point is 00:14:03 We need Jalen Lovac, desperately. Can he play on Friday? Yeah, this Friday might be ugly. Gonzaga scares me to death. I mean, when we did our preseason predictions, I thought they would beat Michigan State. Obviously, Michigan State now is one of the best teams in the country. Beat Louisville and beat Indiana and beat North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:14:25 I had a four and two losing to Gonzaga and then St. John's. Well, I've already lost the first three of these games. Please, Jalen Lowell. Hey, at least you got IU coming up. Well, we go 10 minutes without scoring. It's going to be tough to beat anybody. That's true. Who's next?
Starting point is 00:14:44 Robert. Robert. Go ahead, Robert. Hey, thank you guys for taking my call. I know this is a tough, you know, time to, do this, but I just wanted to say, I think Mark Pope just doesn't have it. He, like, we've had, like, how many games now, and he just does not have the game knowledge to lead it, like, Kentucky, to, to be the, like, to win. So, after this, like, where do we go? Like, where do we go? Like,
Starting point is 00:15:24 It was such a tough loss, and, you know, I just don't know what we do. It was so bad, and I don't know. Yeah, Robert, we appreciate it. Corey Price just sent me this stat. Kentucky now has a losing record versus power four teams under Mark Pope at 14 and 15, excluding the exhibitions. Wow, that's surprising. I mean, they started so hot, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:52 And then didn't they break a record for, like, wins? versus most ranked teams. Ranked opponents last year. They did. But then it kind of fell apart late. And then this year it's just been a collapse. The SEC last year was so strong. You heard Jay Williams.
Starting point is 00:16:05 By the way, was Jay Williams and Dick Vital on the broadcast tonight? They were. Did they happen to mention when Jay used to play at Duke against Kentucky? Did they mention any of those? I only hear the radio broadcast. Huh.
Starting point is 00:16:17 So you tell me. Well, see, I'm with you. I was listening to radio. So I wonder if Dick Vitow and Jay Wham talked to any about the old Duke Kentucky games. during the broadcast. I just wondering. Who's next car?
Starting point is 00:16:27 Sounds like they did. Big Don. Big Don. Go ahead, Big Don. Hey, Ryan. I'm on my way home from the game. Ever since the game ended, I just can't get my mind straight.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I've cried. I've cried. I've spent my hard-earned money. $300 on tickets. We went, hey, before the game, we went to Jeffree, it was $200. And I went there and I watched that crack show.
Starting point is 00:16:53 I watched it. I just thought, why am I here? Why am I here at 10 o'clock at night, driving home on I-6-4 right now, 1.30 in the morning, and we're losing the UNC at home. This is Kentucky basketball. We don't do that. And I'm just, I don't know. I don't know where you go from here.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Pope just, I don't think he's the answer, and I don't see how it gets fixed. I think it's over. I'm sorry, I'll hang up. Big Don, a great call. I mean, that's you, the feeling we can feel it in your voice and you probably represent most of the fan base tonight after this game. And here you are, you're driving home on I-64
Starting point is 00:17:31 dark parts of the state where there's no lights. Oh, go ahead. If you got more to say, Don, you go right ahead. Yeah, give me a minute. I'm just, I don't know. It's been for the last, what, six years, bull crap. Bull crap. Ever since COVID, we haven't got anything doing this program. It's went to hell. One, week 16. I can't do it no more.
Starting point is 00:18:00 What's the point in watching that team? Please, just give me answers. Big Donnell, appreciate it. I wish we did know answers. I think our answers are sitting over there on the bench in low Jaden Quaitons. I think those guys have got to get healthy for this team to turn it around
Starting point is 00:18:16 because right now I just, there's issues with this squad we got right now. Yeah, I don't want to jump the gun. I mean, I get the emotion. But you're without your starting point guard, your utility guy that was a prize catching the transfer portal. And Jane Quaitens, who was a top five pick? So could it change? Could it turn around?
Starting point is 00:18:36 Yes. But there is some question marks. I mean, you should have won that game, even without all of those three guys. Mark Pope's roster construction needs to be questioned. There's not enough shooters on this team. And we thought this summer the way everybody talked about how good shooters they were, we're going to be okay. We'll be okay with Trent and Cam Williams and Yelovich. Aberdeen's shooting well.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Otega's got found he shot. So I don't know. I love Big Don's call because I think that a lot of fans going home tonight feel the exact same way he does. And you had all those point guard injuries last year. And now you're going through the same problems because your primary point guard got hurt. Where's the depth? Maybe we now know why he was so mad that Travis Perry left. That was your third string point guard.
Starting point is 00:19:23 They could have used him. But, you know, Jasper paid like, what, five minutes tonight. I mean, he's not ready for this. He can play the crappy teams, but right now he is not physically ready to play against these teams right now. Who's our next caller? Man, I'm starting to feel a little anger from the last caller. Big Don got you fired.
Starting point is 00:19:41 I think so. Luke is next. Luke, go ahead, Luke. Hey, Ron. I first just want to say thank y'all for being on because y'all bring a lot of positive energy, especially after a loss that bad. I was there tonight, and I'm on my way back to Owensboro, actually, right now.
Starting point is 00:19:58 During warm-ups, Otega Oway, out of the 15-3-pointers, I've seen him shoot. He made 11 or 12 of them. I mean, it was like he was barely missing, and then it's like once the game started, I mean, the proof is in the box score. Brandon Garrison was our only player to hit a three, and it's just, it's starting to make me wonder the way they've been playing recently if Jaden Quintence and Jalen Lowe and Mo Diabate are truly enough. I guess I'll let you all get off here and see what y'all think.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Well, be careful going back to Owensboro. That's a long route going on in the middle of night here. So, but yeah, in the first half, they were 0 of 3 from 3 point range. 0 of 3. I'm sorry, 0 of 8 from 3 point range in the first half, 0 of 8. Second half, 1 of 5, and your 1 is Brandon Garrison. took a couple ill-advised three-pointers. Like I said, when we had the lead early in the shot clock.
Starting point is 00:20:59 I don't, I think they're better shooters than that, but they got to be smarter than that when they take their shot for sure. And if Otega, I don't know, I'm not going to complain about Otega because, man, we saw signs of the old Otega tonight going to the basket. Did he even, she didn't even try a three-pointer tonight? Yeah, he was O for one. O for one. After the game, I didn't hear a ton of Pope after the game.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I did hear one quote he said on radio in which he said, these guys have got to learn the concept of learning to make plays for each other. Yeah. Yeah. So are they just out there trying to get their own, trying to play me ball? At times, I think a couple guys were. That's what I'm saying. And they just were playing like they were behind and took some bad shots.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Want to take another one for a little break? Yeah, let's take one more. Here we got. Super Stein. Super Stein. Is this the new coach, Willie Stein? William. William Stein?
Starting point is 00:21:49 Hey, what's up, fellas? I am glad to be on and thank you all for having me. Unfortunately, I don't know that I can save us from this one, but I am here, so that's good. I wanted to just say, if y'all don't mind, I have a couple questions and then comments, then I'm going to have a happy ending if that's okay. Yeah, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:22:15 I'm going to say, I was just, I think the biggest thing with me about this team is, is forget like, you know, that we, if we get our guys back, if we're 100% healthy, just that's great. Forget what happens the end of the rest of the season. What I don't understand is, you know, average knee.
Starting point is 00:22:34 So take Nick Thompson, average guy, six foot, 190 pounds on a good day. And, you know, no real basketball athleticism. But I kid, I love Kentucky. So I'm searching the internet. And I'm watching UK practice from the moment I can see it on YouTube, just the first minutes that I can see them practice. I watch. And here's the problem. I am who I just explained. But I could see in the first minute of watching this team like, oh, man, they really, they can't shoot very well. And then I'd watch a couple more minutes. And then I'm like, oh, they're really bad at shooting. And then, you know, you watch for a whole five minutes and you're like, okay, this team cannot shoot at all. And my question is, how did Mark Pope sign off on all of these players knowing that we brought him here for offense and for shooting?
Starting point is 00:23:37 And how could he, the orchestrator of all of that, you know, kind of miss that? And that's the question I feel like has to be asked to him. And, you know, I'll respect whatever he answers. And the other comment I want to make is, is O-Way, you're right. He kind of looked like he was showing flashes tonight. But, man, have you all not noticed, like, from the beginning of the season? It's like somebody took his cape. It's like, it's like Superman's out there.
Starting point is 00:24:04 But he's like, has no girlfriend. His girlfriend was taken from him. And he's, I, where is his moxie? Where is the guy from last year? Well, that's what we're saying. I know. I'm running out of time positive, positive. positive, hey, we're volleyball school.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Let's go Eva Hudson. Let's go Brooklyn to lay. Let's go UK volleyball. That's what we do. Shout out Kennedy Thompson. Safe trip to Kentucky, Owensboro. Thank you. All right.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Appreciate it, Superstein. Yeah, the volleyball coming up on Thursday, that made me snap us out of this funk after the Vanderbilt, Louisville, now North Carolina trifecta we just went through. But the guy, you know, he brings up some good points. I think Pope made the roster. Basically, he looked at, what was we, week last year. Correct. Toughness, defense, rebounding. So he went out and tried to find some guys he thought
Starting point is 00:24:57 he could count on defensively. And they're a much better defensive team. I mean, they held North Carolina to 67 points. Most of the time you're going to win this game. But like he said, where's your shooters? Well, he missed out on something. He tried to get some and he just didn't get any of them that he was trying to get. They thought maybe Cam Williams and Trent were going to be the answer. Yelovitz, they were all going to be the answer. But shooting one of 13 from three, it can be hard to beat a lot of teams in the SEC. Well, I mean, we've been screaming for him to shorten the rotation and play guys over 25, 30 minutes,
Starting point is 00:25:28 and then tonight you've got four guys over 30 minutes. Yeah, that's second half. He left those five guys, just ran with those guys. And why? I mean, they went 10 minutes and didn't score a basket. I don't know. Well, change the lineup then, Mark. Frank Rutledge has joined us in the studio, and Frank Franklin is also here as well.
Starting point is 00:25:47 So are you going to join us next segment? Is my mic on? No, Mike's not on. Now it is. Is Frank Franklin going to join us next segment? I have a lot to do for the websites, but I can blog and talk. I'm multitasking. I already work all day anyway.
Starting point is 00:25:59 What's more? We at least, after a commercial break, we need to get you your thoughts on the game. All right, I'll try to wrap up this blog post, hit publish, and I'll be ready next segment. Go to kentysportradio.com. Frank Franklin is in the house with Frank Rutledge. And the Kentucky Wildcats stunk tonight, 67, 64, lose to North Carolina. Carolina at Rupp Arena when Tashon Prince was there. Willie Stein was there.
Starting point is 00:26:25 Rondo was in the crowd. Rondo was there. The hammer was sitting on courtside. He was there. Darrell Isaacs. Gosh. We're right back. This is Local Thorleaders' KSR Postgame Show.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Welcome back. Local Tour Leaders KSR Postgame show. It's Kentucky Laysa Tird, 67, 64 to UNC at Rup Arena. Listen, I got to say something real first. Billy R Sports has been here since 9 o'clock this morning. Did the pre-show at 9 o'clock this morning, and he just saved the show, put it back on 630 WLP. Well done. We're having some issues where the show was not on 630 WLP.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Billy fixed it. I think it's back on there. Well, I mean... Well, I'm bragging on. You thought you said it was on. No, it is. I'm just, you know, don't know anything nowadays. I'm just so tired, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I'm just glad it's on the air. Well, you'll be back on the year? While Shannon just sleeps there, getting resting up for the pre-show, I'll tell you how much he works. And I'll hear about how he had to stay up late to watch this one. So that other voice you hear is my son, Frank Franklin, who has joined us. He unfortunately was at Rupp Arena for the game tonight.
Starting point is 00:27:32 I'll just open the floor to you, Drew. What are your thoughts? I thought about throwing a Christmas tree off the top of the escalator. No, not that bad. Very disappointed, though. It was such a great atmosphere. I mean, they just wasted Rupp's fastball tonight. The 930 start did not sleep.
Starting point is 00:27:48 slowdown Big Blue Nation. They were late in the game, I believe it was tied. I just kind of looked around during a timeout, and it is midnight, and that place was on fire. Not just that. I'm sure you've already mentioned the Will Stein introduction. Rondo, Tashon, volleyball team, one thing after another, bringing the energy, and then the team can't score a field goal in the second half. Have you seen a drought like that where they went 10 minutes without a field goal,
Starting point is 00:28:13 finished the game two of their last 16? I hadn't seen a lot of things. one for 13 from three on a team, I'm told, is going to take 30 a game and it's full of shooters. One for 13, and your one is Brandon Garrison. Do you have that in your bingo card? I did not. My bingo card got wotted up early into the game. You know, the three-point shooting and that scoring drought stand out.
Starting point is 00:28:36 But on the glass, I mean, the numbers are crazy. 20 offensive rebounds, but it's not like North Carolina. I mean, they have size. They're good, definitely. But Kentucky was just standing around looking at them. They weren't even trying to rebound. And I believe it was late in the game. I'm there and I'm trying to process all this here on the fly.
Starting point is 00:28:53 But I think Yelovich got a block up by one. But then North Carolina got two offensive rebounds and hits the three that I believe was the final go ahead. I think I'm clear on that. Regardless, it was just one offensive rebound after another offensive rebound. And it was purely effort. Yes, they have size. But I could have gone out there and rebounded against that Kentucky team. Malachi Marino was bringing it.
Starting point is 00:29:13 But he didn't have any help. He was doing everything he could on the defense. defensive end, you know, blocking shots, trying to get some rebounds, but he'd had zero help. I think Yelovich did a great job on Caleb Wilson tonight. He did. He's got to start. He does. We were talking about that on the pregame show. I've been trying to speak that into existence for a few weeks. Jack Pilgrim was big on him on pregame show, and he did a great job defending Wilson. I mean, he's, we all had the worry about him coming over from European ball after having Big Z a couple years ago looking like you didn't know how to guard. We throw that
Starting point is 00:29:43 narrative out the window. Yelovich can play some defense. And in a game like this, they need his size too. So most of the calls, the theme seems to be, how do they fix it? How can they save it? Fix it. Good luck. Is there a way to fix it, Frank? Franklin?
Starting point is 00:30:00 Unless Quaintance comes back and he's just Anthony Davis good or something. It's just that's so bad. There's nothing to be excited about. This squad they've got right now has issues. Yes. I mean, I you know, they're still lingering whatever is from Louisville. But, I mean, they just have, like, the team's not even built well.
Starting point is 00:30:21 No. Like, you're a three-point shooting team, but I'm not sure you have many three-point shooters. Denzel Aberdeen, I don't know the record for airballed threes in a season, but I think he's already doubled that up. I don't know how someone can airball so many three-pointers. And if your best three-point shooter is Colin Chandler, where you've got to give him more shots. Yeah, and he got a good look. That's the end.
Starting point is 00:30:39 I sit on there at the end, and I thought he had it. I mean, it was a great lane. He needed to finish that. That was a tough loss to cost him. I had no problem with that last shot. He got to the rim with the left hand. He'd hit one pretty similar to that just right before that. I had no problem with that last shot.
Starting point is 00:30:53 In O-Way, kind of had a breakout game, played with some energy, 16 points. The guys hit their free throws. They missed a few critical wins, some front ends that cost them. But overall, shot decently well. But, I mean, when you don't score in the second half and you just watch the other team rebound their own misses, we're lucky it was only three-point loss. You're exactly right. go 10 minutes without scoring and they get 20 offensive rebounds, how would they be able to keep it close? Even when Kentucky was leading in the second half for a little bit, I kept thinking like, how are they winning?
Starting point is 00:31:21 This feels like North Carolina has control of this game. Part of that's because Yellowville-Chon Wilson, he really didn't dominate them too bad. He had some flashy moves there late, a little turnaround. I was like, ooh, that's one of those dudes. But other than that, I thought they defended him pretty well. The other big guy was unstoppable. Since you were at Rupp, I wanted to tell you that, I don't know if you know this or not, but Dick Vitao, He broadcasts some games that Jay Williams used to play in when Duke used to play Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:31:47 So just you may have missed that. All right. So I was there and I haven't heard the broadcast. I was getting a lot of Dick Vitell complaints. And I don't like that. I mean, he's Dick Fattel, but I'm hearing it might not have been his best. Well, he just wanted people to know that he did a lot of Jay Williams games, especially when they played Kentucky. Okay, brought that up a few times.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Yeah. It was kind of the good little love fest there for a while. Yeah. Well, I didn't hear much of the postgame show. I was just walking by here and thought, I see a light on upstairs. I'll go check on, Billy. I thought you were at home, actually. You know, I forgot the equipment at the restaurant.
Starting point is 00:32:21 That's why you're here. I didn't expect you. I wouldn't have come up if I'd known I was getting tricked into being on the radio. Just kidding. Good to be here. But I was going to ask you, I did hear a caller right before I walked in the building when I turned it on my headphones, that he seemed to be very upset. Has that been the theme?
Starting point is 00:32:33 I don't want to take up all the callers times here. I want to let everyone vent. But I heard one that was pretty upset. Big Don was upset, driving home on I-64. That's the one I heard. He went to Jeff Ruby, spent $200, spend $100 on tickets, and then they lose again. And Big Don kind of summarized what a lot of fans are feeling tonight, I think. Well, let's get me out of the way and get to more Big Don's.
Starting point is 00:32:53 That's what people want to hear. All right. Phone lines are open. 859-280-2287. If you're going to work on your blog, if you're going to chime in, just chime in. Okay. All right. Can we cuss?
Starting point is 00:33:03 No. There's certain words you can't say. Just checking. Just checking. And we do have to end by two, or the grim ones really take over. Oh, my. What time is it? Oh,
Starting point is 00:33:11 we've got to get out of here. Okay, let's take a couple calls and we'll take a break. Who we got for? Mandy. Mandy, go ahead, Mandy. Can I be Frank?
Starting point is 00:33:19 Frank's here. I'm in a dark place. I feel like, okay. I just feel like last year, Pope, I feel like Pope had something up his sleeve. Like in a game,
Starting point is 00:33:28 if we were down, like, all right, Pope's going to call the timeout. He's got something up his sleep. Like, this year I have no confidence in that whatsoever. I was like, what in the world is going on?
Starting point is 00:33:40 But at least I got some, Sissy cakes today. So that's positive. There you go. There's the bright spot for you, man. You appreciate the phone call. Yeah. Pope, for all the analytics,
Starting point is 00:33:51 I don't know how your analytics are going to help you when you can't hit a three-pointer and you can't get a rebound and you can't score within 10 minutes. All right, I'm back. Sorry, I couldn't shut up any longer. Good. Since you brought up his analytics,
Starting point is 00:34:01 what do the analytics say about taking out your best players early in the game when you have a lead? That stinks. Okay, I'm going back to my blog. You guys are doing great. That's the number, on social media, the number one complaint, I think, is still the mass substitutions. You know, substituting two or three guys, usually at the first TV timeout.
Starting point is 00:34:18 You can't have a hot hand. Nope. Time to make a change. And I know his, Pope has said his point is, I want to have fresh legs at the end of the game. I got to give my guys a break. And plus, the subs, I need them to get in the game a little bit in case I need them late in the game. He needs to have some difficult conversations with a few guys. One of them might have hit a three tonight and that's good.
Starting point is 00:34:37 And, you know, I want Jasper to work out. but Pope's really got to get away from the play everybody, especially when O.Way and Chandler in that group kind of have it going early, and it's like you do a line change to get everybody their time. I used to coach Hudson Automotive, third grade. We made it to the championship game. Great team.
Starting point is 00:34:54 But, you know, we'd line up at half court, and you'd like point to the guy across from you, and everybody had to play a quarter, and every mom had to be happy. That was third grade. We don't need to be doing that right now in Kentucky. You need to have some difficult conversations and some minutes need to be changing a little bit.
Starting point is 00:35:07 That is Frank Franklin. Frank Rutledge was here while I go as well. We got one more break, one more second. We have to get out of here by 2 o'clock. That's not our decision. We have to. So we'll take our final break. Come back, our final segment.
Starting point is 00:35:19 This is the local total leaders, KSR postgame show. All right, welcome back. Final segment, the local total leaders, KSR post game show, Kentucky, North Carolina, Rupp Arena, great crowd, loud crowd, Will Stein, your new football coach is there, Tashon's there,
Starting point is 00:35:38 Rondo, Zes. there and you can't score a basket for 10 minutes. Finished the game 2 of 16. We've kind of talked a lot. We have to be out of here by 2 o'clock. Let's just run through some calls real quick and then we'll try to get as as means as we can. So who we got first?
Starting point is 00:35:52 Well, quickly, Ryan, it's time for our Johnny Rocker, personal injury attorney moneymaker of the game. Oh, this is going to be good. Injured, get small town compassion with big city results when you call the Rocker at 270321-4429. We try not to pick the MVP on this segment. Tonight we're picking Andrea Yellovich
Starting point is 00:36:10 6 points 3 of 6 shooting had 4 rebounds not the best effort but I thought played good defense at times somebody that should probably be getting more minutes
Starting point is 00:36:18 and while he probably needed to rebound a little better Ryan he is somebody that stood out to me and is our Johnny Rocker personal injury attorney money maker of the game I get a great call
Starting point is 00:36:27 because like we've said he did the job on Caleb Wilson kind of shut him down a little bit tonight and that kind of gave him a chance to stay in the game so good job good pick all right who we got first
Starting point is 00:36:36 uh, bearclaw, bearclaw. Go ahead, Bearclaw. Hey, how's it going, guys? I'm not going to be all doom and gloom like everybody else. We only lost by three. We didn't have our starting point guard. We didn't have our best defensive player, Mo Diabate. And come in January, probably we're going to get Jaden Clayton's back. We're going to be a completely different team SEC play. We're going to be great. We're still final four bound. We're good. Go cats. Wow.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Mr. Bearclaw, Mr. positive there. I think we needed to hear that a little bit. I don't know if it's going to come to fruition, but he brings some of our better players are not even playing right now. I guess we need some good balance. I don't share the enthusiasm and the optimism, but we need that. We need that, a little boost.
Starting point is 00:37:24 When Mark Pope said Jalen Lowe was going to be day-to-day forever, I didn't worry about him playing through it. I want to know what's going on Diabate. Something's going on. You don't have a spraying dank on miss a week and a half, yet you still practice. Why didn't you play in? I don't have that answer, but I don't like that it's December 2nd, well now third at this hour.
Starting point is 00:37:45 And we're having all these what's going on questions. Yeah. Who's next, Billy? Mike. Mike, go ahead, Mike. Hey, guys. This is Mike from Knoxville. And I just want to say that I don't understand the last series of the game
Starting point is 00:38:06 where Chandler, is taking the ball out of bounds when he and Oway are our best options for shooting a three-pointer to tie the game. Explain that to me. All right, appreciate it, Mike. This is why I'll explain it. Their analytics will tell you
Starting point is 00:38:25 the guy who takes the ball out is the easiest to get the ball back. So that's why sometimes your best shooter will take it out because he can easily get it back when he comes in bounds. But he just threw it away across the court. I mean, at that point, it was over, but I agree with the caller. It was like, what are we doing?
Starting point is 00:38:42 Why is Chandler, throw it into Chandler? There's only a couple. Oh, you're talking about the last play. Oh, is that what he was talking about? Because I was mad about the last play. I mean, you don't have a shot, really, but like, they didn't even give themselves an opportunity. They just lobbed it up to North Carolina to dribble it out. Totally stand corrected.
Starting point is 00:38:59 If he's talking about the absolute last play, then yes. That's where my brain went. There could have been another. Sorry, I'm back to blogging. You guys are doing great, though. Who's next? Who do you give the last shot to it? on this team. Is it Chandler?
Starting point is 00:39:10 Is that who got it tonight? No, Chandler threw it out of bounds. That's what the guy is what the caller was saying. Chandler threw it from the end zone, threw it out of bounds, trying to throw it to somebody. Well, he missed the layup. Yeah. To tie the game. And he had a good look. He had a good look.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Let's go to Steve. Steve, go ahead, Steve. Hello, Mr. Lemon. Frank Franklin took a few of my things, but I just want to say, Marlopold's got 22-niond-dollar roster designed to be, beat up on what sub 300 teams unsee out rebounded offensively they were just killing them in the pain
Starting point is 00:39:46 and then yeah even more pope touched on are they playing for the front of the jersey or the back of the jersey and who's to say when jaylin clinton comes back that he's going to play for the front of the jersey and then also you got low I mean can he still red shirt didn't he close to that it was also 13 minutes and eight seconds without an offensive field goal
Starting point is 00:40:08 who was going to be the OT lineup, and then also NCAA positioning. I mean, you've got to have quality out-of-conference wins. The SEC-ACC matchup, the ACC's taking it. So you're not going to get the quality wins that you need in the SEC, regular season, and then out-of-bounds plays. I don't know what Mark Pope's doing. Steve, we appreciate it. You know, he's right about the NCAA.
Starting point is 00:40:32 They have their best win is what? Eastern Illinois? Loyola, Maryland, Tennessee Tech. Our resume ain't looking too good right now. I don't know if any of those are in the top. I know they're not in the top 200. I don't know if they're in the top 250. But we did win a tournament championship.
Starting point is 00:40:53 Oh, man. I really tried to make that a thing. Now that just frustrates me that I even pretended. That was fun. Good thing you didn't smoke those cigars and go through with the whole celebration you had planned. Yeah, it's hard to smile about anything. right now. I'm heading to Nashville Friday.
Starting point is 00:41:08 That's supposed to be a fun weekend. I have concerns. That could be ugly. If we're not at full stream. Can't go 0 and 4. In our first four non-conference games. You really start having tournament questions at that point. Who's next, Billy? Jerry. Jerry, go ahead, Jerry.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Hey, Ryan. Ryan, can you hear me? Yeah, go ahead, Jerry. Yes, Jerry. Listen, we need more callers. Is this Jerry? Yes. Okay, go ahead, Jerry. We need more callers, Ryan, like Big Don, than we do Bearclaw. Okay, he's talking about all this, you know, we're going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:41:47 I'm telling you, Ryan, his team, they ain't going to the NCAA tournament. They're not doing it. This team don't have it. I mean, I was there tonight. I'm driving home just like Big Don. They're not doing it. Two o'clock in the morning. am not home got to be at work at six and we go down there and watch a snooze fast
Starting point is 00:42:14 it's all what Jerry appreciate it man be careful driving home and especially if you're going to work at six o'clock in the morning I mean everybody they got a right to be mad you got it right to be frustrated got a right to be upset with what we saw tonight and there's like I said there's no I don't think there's an easy answer until those guys get healthy because there's good this this squad we got right now there is obviously some issues and some things going on that I don't know if it can be worked out without getting our guys healthy. We got two on the line in like four minutes. You want to get through? All right.
Starting point is 00:42:45 Let's do it. Let's do it real fast. Tyler. Tyler, you got, I'm sorry you just got a minute. Go ahead, Tyler. Yeah, I was there at Rupp tonight. Took my 14-year-old son there as a birthday present. It was a rough night.
Starting point is 00:42:56 And I know I got to be quick, but this team has no offensive identity at all. I know we got to get healthy. but that's if these guys get healthy. There's a lot of if and ifs and buts were cherries and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. And I just feel like this team has no offensive identity. There's more questions and answers. And at the end of the day, if these guys do get healthy,
Starting point is 00:43:17 I mean, you still got to put quality wins together. Gonzaga's coming up, and this looks like a team that could beat us by 30 on Friday. It's just not a lot of optimism. So I'm hoping for, you know, hoping for something better, but we'll see what happens in the future. Go catch. Good call. Thank you, Tyler.
Starting point is 00:43:31 a great call. Good one right there. We got one more then. I'm going to wrap it up with this one. Who we got? Yeah, David. David, go ahead, David. You're our last one if you're a good one. Thanks. I'm going to you know, I'm going to try to be positive even though it's hard to be because we've been done this before 2014. I'm not saying that will happen
Starting point is 00:43:55 again. I'm just saying I'm not giving up on the season again. Well, David, hang in there. Appreciate the phone call. Hang in there. That's kind of going to be the rallying cry for all fans because they could lose another one on this weekend, Gonzaga on Friday. What's our record right now, Drew? In games that matter? We're five and three.
Starting point is 00:44:16 Yeah. Oh, and three to me. Even though those other ones were fun, that didn't do anything. That didn't move the needle. And it's just the fact that Louisville Wamped us. I'm almost cussed. And Billy said we can't do that.
Starting point is 00:44:32 I got a quick no when I asked. Not that I would have done it. I was just putting villains out. There are certain words we can't say. We can say some words, but there's some words we can't say. Michigan wonped us. And tonight you stunk at home against North Carolina. So all three of these non-conference games, you played horrible in three of them, all three of them.
Starting point is 00:44:54 It was fun picking on the other teams. But when you run into some size and some physicality, I mean, they just wilt away. When the lights come on, Kentucky goes the other direction, or at least so far. But Tashon Prince was there. Willie Collie Stein was there. Well, not Collie Stein. Willie Stein was there.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Wasted a good Rupp night. Can't lose games like that at Rupp. Should never lose it Rupp. Glad they hired a new football coach before this loss. And looks like Justin Burke's coming back to Lexington into Bionni's staff. And my boy, Pat Biondo was there. You had the scoop. Yeah, Kasporden.
Starting point is 00:45:28 Oh, he was there at the game tonight, too? Maybe, was he? I don't know. You tell me. I don't know, was he? You tell me you were there. He was. I want to forget about everything that was there.
Starting point is 00:45:35 We got to get there. Billy has to be back on the air in seven hours for the KSR pregame show, pre-show. Then KSR will be live at KS Bar and Grill. It's Wings Day. It should be a lot of fun. We rehash what was a wonderful night at Rupp Arena, introducing our new head football coach and watching our basketball team stink it up. 67, 64, lost in North Carolina.
Starting point is 00:45:56 Final words, Frank? I'll see in a few hours Might sleep, might not We got a couch here There is a couch I got more work to do So you still got some blogging to do I'm just getting started on the blog
