Welcome, everyone.
It is the local Toyota dealers KSR post game show.
Kentucky.
Well, let's just go ahead and say it.
Best team in the country, 7865 with a win at home tonight in a preseason game.
that I would suggest is probably the most hyped Kentucky fans have ever been for a preseason game.
This is the local Toyota dealers, KSR postgame show.
I met Jones.
It was, you know, a lot of people are going to look at this result, especially non-UK.K.
fans and even some sort of down in the dumps or Debbie Downer UK fans.
And they're going to say, oh, don't overreact.
It's a preseason game.
etc, et cetera, et cetera.
I say fooey to all that.
Let me overreact for one night.
After tonight, we can all take a break.
But let's give ourselves tonight and let's give ourselves through the weekend and Monday.
And then we'll stop.
Then we'll slow down.
But for tonight, let me give you some numbers.
The number one team in the country just came into your arena.
And not just a number one team, a team that's been consistently good.
for a number of years.
Has a returning lineup where four of the five people starting are guys that were on the team
last year, on a good team last season.
I believe they were, what were they a Sweet 16 team last year?
They have the returning preseason national player of the year playing point guard and their
experience, mostly juniors and seniors.
Kentucky was without what I would say is the second best player on the team.
We may have to adjust that over the course of the year, but Jalen Lowe, and without the number one ranked NBA prospect on the team in Jaden Quaintons.
The preseason All-American on the team played 17 minutes and is coming off an injury, played the sixth most minutes in the game of any UK player.
And with all of that happening, Kentucky dominated the game, won by double digits, and by any eye test that,
that you watched was clearly the better team.
More athletic, better rebounding, more explosive,
shot the ball better.
Now, I don't know if that would be true in every game this year,
but tonight they did.
And defensively, even though I think Kentucky,
especially in the second half,
had some defensive lapses,
significantly better defensively.
All in all, I don't know how you couldn't be excited.
I'm not sure you could have drawn that game up better
from a Kentucky standpoint.
7865.
I'm thrilled.
I mean, we needed after what's been going on in football
to have excitement around this fan base,
and we had it.
You saw it at the arena.
Pretty much full, loud, people into it,
louder than most regular season games.
I can tell you at my bar,
people were doing Mark Pope chance.
It was full during the game,
an excitement that's there only occasion
in regular season games, period.
This city was lit up for this game, and Kentucky delivered.
And you see when you listen to the Mark Pope after the game, you see the confidence he has in this group.
You know, not only did we win, we played 10 guys, and we played them a lot.
I'm going to go through here because I honestly think everyone that played needs a mention.
I'll start with Otega O'A.
he was big early on, scored seven of the first, I think, 14 points.
He finishes with 10 points.
He only played 17 minutes.
Of all the players on the team, the person you're the worried the least about is O'Way,
because you saw him do it last year.
Denzel Aberdeen led the team in minutes.
29.
He led the team in plus minus with plus 14.
He was great.
This is our backup point guard.
When Jalen Lowe comes back, I don't know if he'll start or not.
He might.
Drew thinks he will.
We'll see.
But tonight he had to play 29 minutes, and I thought he was great.
He, I thought, controlled the offense well, played really good defense.
He and all the various people that were on, Braden Smith throughout the game, I thought, did an excellent job.
He did as well.
He had nine points.
Trent Noah, 10 points.
He had one banked in three, but I thought, I was surprised.
He started, to be honest with you.
I thought he handled himself really well, played good defense.
his guy. Brandon Garrison was your regular Brandon Garrison all over the place. However,
defensively, I actually thought he was pretty good. He had some foul issues, but otherwise good.
Diabate is exactly what you want from a senior you bring in to play that position. He controlled
the glass, nine rebounds. And by the way, Kentucky is a whole controlled the glass. I mean,
that is, Purdue is a really good rebounding team. I mean,
I mean, they're very tall.
They played two bigs most of the game.
They should have kind of killed Kentucky on the class.
And honestly, until the very end of the game, I thought Kentucky completely controlled the glass.
As a matter of fact, we had more offensive rebounds than they did, 10 to 7.
If you had told me that before the game with the lineup they put on the floor,
I would have never imagined that was true.
I think Diabate was a big piece of that.
the two guys that stood out to most to me as like the wow are the two freshmen jasper johnson led the team in scoring 15 points
six of ten from the field three of seven from three point line and really a lot of wow plays i mean it seems
like he played more he only played 19 minutes he had 15 points in 19 minutes and took his man if i'm perdu
and you sit there and you sort of say, what do I look at that game?
I'd look at how you had no chance of stopping Jasper Johnson off the bounce.
He completely dominated whoever they put on him.
I thought he was excellent.
But the story of the game to me is Malachi Moreno.
Because I have to tell you, I saw that kid play when he was a junior in high school
in the state semifinals here in Rupp Arena.
And I thought to myself, I don't know how that dude is going to play in Kentucky.
You know, I knew his brother when his brother played there,
and I just thought, look, Malachi obviously got a lot of potential.
I don't know how he plays at Kentucky.
I'm kind of surprised he's ranked that high.
Well, clearly that's what the scouts see that sometimes we as fans do not.
Because he has improved exponentially in the last 18 months,
but he was great tonight, and he has all the potential in the world.
Matt Painter was saying after the game, Purdue recruited him hard.
It may have been the second choice.
And you could see how he could play at Purdue.
He kind of plays their style.
And he said, that kid is a great kid with a ton of talent.
The sky's the limit for him.
And it's going to be hard to keep him off the floor.
If I was Brandon Garrison, I would say, hey, man, stay out of foul trouble and work hard
because you got a dude sitting behind you who, if you're not careful,
will steal a lot of your minutes.
So for me, the two Kentucky kids that are freshmen were the stories of the game.
Yellovich thought played really, really well.
He had 20 minutes.
He was much better on defense than I would have thought.
I kind of thought defensive, he would be a defensive liability.
Maybe some of that is me just sort of thinking about the weaknesses Z had and then imputing them on him.
But he actually played really well defensively.
Slid his feet.
I was impressed.
He's going to get pulled.
playing time. Colin Chandler only had two points, but Mark Pope said he was the MVP, said he did all the
little things. Pope probably watches that stuff more than I do. He did have the highlight of the game,
Billy, that dunk. He almost did, I'm not saying it was dirt men of field, okay, but he did
do that thing where it looked like he wasn't going to rise anymore, and then right at the last second
seemed to rise again? You know what I'm talking about on that dunk? Or did you watch it? You have to listen
the radio feed. Do you see it?
I saw it.
That dunk was very, very impressive to me, like, very impressive.
And then Cam Williams, you know, I think when Jalen Lowe comes back,
I think Cam Williams is going to be spotty.
I liked what Jimmy Dyke said, which is there's going to be three or four games
next year or this year where we're really going to need Cam Williams,
and that's what I'm going to judge.
He was two for six from three.
My issue is not shooting with him.
I think he'll shoot the ball fine.
He struggles on defense, and he struggled on defense a lot in the game.
But when Jaylon Lowe comes, he might be your 11th man.
So if your 11th man is a guy that's on NBA draft boards,
then you're going to be pretty good.
So my takeaway from all this, we are good,
and we have a chance to be really, really good.
This team can be great defensively.
if they rebound like they did tonight, that's even more exciting.
And then offensively, the sky's the limit.
I mean, I know they scored 78.
I think they can be more efficient offensively than they even were tonight.
They were nine for 29 from three point land.
That percentage, I think, will be higher in a lot of games.
And you don't have your point guard.
That's the big thing.
You didn't have your point guard.
If you have your point guard, I think a lot of that stuff is different.
So I may sound excited in my voice.
That's because I am excited.
I love Kentucky basketball, but I also love when the product kind of represents the fan base and the state.
And to that point, it hit me towards the end of the game.
You know, Purdue made a run.
I think they cut it to maybe five or six.
And then all of a sudden we pushed it out to 14.
Trent Noah, I think, hit a three.
Jasper Johnson hit a three.
Malachi made an and one.
And it occurred to me that against the number one team in the country,
a team that's got a chance to play, you know, for a national championship,
a team that two years ago was in the championship game.
Kentucky put it away with three Kentucky kids on the floor.
I'm always one who says, hey, I love Kentucky kids,
but we need to have the best players.
But when you can have the best players,
and then they are from Kentucky,
and two of them are freshmen,
one of them's a sophomore,
and you're able to get the performance you did
to win a game like this,
I don't know how you can't be thrilled about that.
That's what this whole thing is about.
So, yes,
this doesn't mean the team's going to be great.
A couple years ago,
Purdue lost to Arkansas in a game.
didn't even make the tournament, Purdue went the national championship game.
So this doesn't mean anything in the big picture.
But in the short-term picture, we are really good.
We are really fun, and this is going to be a really exciting year.
And maybe most importantly, this is a group of players that if everything goes right,
can have a shot to win the whole thing.
I loved the team last year.
I thought they were a team that had a shot to do something exciting if they got some breaks.
But I don't think I ever thought they could win the national championship.
I certainly haven't thought that in the last,
you probably have to go back for me to the team that lost to Auburn in the Elite 8.
I believe that was 2019.
the Tyler Hero Keldon Johnson team.
That's probably the last time that I thought,
you know what?
Things go great.
This team could have a shot to win it all.
I think that's true about this team now.
We'll see what happens.
They're going to have to play better than they did tonight,
and they're going to have to do a lot of stuff well.
But you have a team now that's going to be in that conversation,
and that's really exciting.
859-2-80-2287.
We're going to take your calls.
This should be a fun night.
Cats, first game on the floor, look awesome, beat the number one team in the country.
How can you not be happy?
We'll be right back.
It is the local toilet dealers, KSR post-game show.
Welcome back.
Local toy dealers, KSR post-game show.
Louisville has a big preseason game in their arena tonight, too.
They are playing Kansas.
Kansas is ranked 19th.
Kansas is up 13 on Louisville, 5946.
Darren Peterson, this was supposed to be a big matchup against two guys who have dreams of being the number one over all pick.
Darren Peterson and McKell.
Is it Mikel or Michael, the guy from Louisville?
I think it's McKell Brown.
At halftime, I don't know what it is right now.
At halftime, Darren Peterson had 24 and McKell Brown had zero.
And McCall Brown was 0 for 7.
So I think the early advantage goes to Darren Peterson, who looks to be like Kansas may not be good,
but he is going to be really, really good.
By the way, if you hear tittering in the background, Billy, Tall and Hubby are here.
We've been going all day at Keenlin, and they went to the game.
So if you hear a humveeons in the background, that's who that is.
Do you win any money today?
Did I win money?
No, I did horribly.
I wore the cowboy hat, and while it gave good luck to the basketball team,
it did not give good luck to the gambling.
One person writes, Matt, I need you to give me your unrealistic right now record prediction for the year.
Okay, so I think I said something like what, 24 and 7 or something before.
All right.
Let's assume Jalen Lowe's back.
for game two, then let's assume we get Jaden Quaintance by conference play.
If you give me that set of parameters, now I'm going after tonight, Billy, 26 and 5,
and a 1C. That's what I'm going.
So he says 40 and O.
Billy, what are you going now?
I think it's closer to what you're saying, four or five losses, probably.
Yeah.
I think they're better than I thought.
I do.
And the reason I think they're better than I thought is, I think there's a couple dudes that are, that are, I think Malachi Moreno is better than I thought.
I think Jasper Johnson is going to have some inconsistencies, but he's going to have some games where he is unstoppable.
And then, you know, if this team can look like that and Colin Chandler can have two points, and Otega O'A can play 17 minutes, and Jalen Lowe's not in the game, then, like, sky's the limit.
All right, who's up first?
Josh.
Josh, go ahead, Josh.
Well, how are doing, Matt?
If we would have been healthy tonight, do you believe it would have been a blowout?
We would just blow them out?
I think it had been the same.
Well, I ain't been probably a similar result.
I mean, you look at the minutes.
Pope played pretty much everybody except Aberdeen equal minutes, which was clearly what he wanted to do.
So my guess is if low plays he does the same and then low plays 20 minutes and Aberdeen plays
20 minutes. And so you probably get a similar result.
Well, I'm really happy. And I hope we do beat Tennessee tomorrow in football.
I don't see it happening, but I hope we do.
I hope we do too. Appreciate the call.
Somebody reminded me, and then I tweeted it out, Billy, it was four years ago this game
when we played Kentucky State that John Caliperi asked Kentucky State to not play zone.
Oh, yeah. Do you remember that? Yes.
He said, we haven't worked on it, so I'm going to ask you not to play zone, which in hindsight is one of the weaker things I think a Kentucky coach has ever done.
Come along a lot.
Yeah.
To Kentucky State, by the way, not to, you know, not to Purdue.
And tonight, I mean, besides the top three guys, Purdue kind of distributed its minutes, but they left their top three in over 30 minutes each.
that so few here Purdue people say well we didn't play but we played more guys more minutes than they did
who's next Tyler Tyler go ahead Tyler
on the second one I'm glad you brought up Cal because one of my talking points of the two that I have
is about him but not and keep in mind when I say this I'm 24 years old
when I think of Kentucky basketball Matt it's still so weird
for me to think that Cal isn't here anymore.
I understand that because you're 24, right?
So like your people's fandom is formed strongest,
I think in their like middle school,
high school years,
and you had Cal that whole time.
Oh, yeah, my first memories of UK basketball or John Wall.
So anyway, and then my second point is,
so I didn't get to watch the game tonight.
I listened to it and heard the crowd.
Tom and Jack were getting into it.
And I'm thinking, man, you know, I'm a pretty realistic fan.
I'm thinking, man, we're going 40 and O.
And then I realized that the final four is in Indianapolis.
Yeah.
And Indy, as we all know, hasn't been kind to us.
So I'm like, is this the revenge tour?
Like, does this revenge, does this avenge 2015 last year?
Like, I'm like, it kind of destroyed me because I'm like,
Indy is like the worst place for Kentucky basketball,
but then I'm like,
huh,
maybe we make that 2015 loss and last year's loss kind of go away.
Anyway,
I mean,
it is something to think about.
They're going to have it in Indy.
Billy,
look up for me.
I always care less about where the final four is,
because if you make the final four,
uh-oh,
that really good kid for Louisville just went down.
I hope he's all right.
Okay.
Yeah,
he just went down.
Hopefully it's hope it looks,
looks,
He's walking, so hopefully he's all right.
I always care a little less about where the final four is than where the regionals are.
Because if you can get, I've always thought it's important.
It looks like he just turned his ankle.
If you can get a one seed and the regional is like in your backyard, that makes a big impact.
Do you, will you look up where the regionals are?
Yeah, I have it here if you want.
Where is it?
Houston, San Jose, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
Okay. So, I mean, Chicago's relatively close, but none of those are, it's not like when it's in Louisville or one of those.
Where's the, does you see where the first eight ones are, the first and second round?
Yeah. Buffalo, Greenville, Oklahoma City, Portland, Tampa, Philly, San Diego, St. Louis.
Okay. Yeah. None of them, we don't have one in our backyard. I guess St. Louis would be the one that would be the closest. 859, 280, 20, 22, 87.
who's next. Parker. Parker.
Parker.
Hey, Matt. So I'm a senior
at UK right now. I went to the game.
I'm actually driving home for a fall break,
and I'm just grinning ear to ear.
I'm reminiscing about all the little plays,
and I could talk about it for a while.
But what you said that I love is
just give me one night to be delusional.
Yeah, I haven't been able to be delusional.
I haven't been able to be delusional about Kentucky basketball
since, like, middle school, man.
So I'm just happy.
I'm just happy to be happy
about something Kentucky basketball, man.
It's so awesome.
The defense was great.
College handler is the man.
Jasper is Rob Dillingham.
I love it.
Go catch and go Big Blue.
Thank you, Matt.
Be delusional.
Tonight's a good night to be delusional.
I totally agree with you.
There's no reason to,
there's no reason to not be delusional.
The Jasper Rob Dillingham thing, I think, is actually a really good analogy.
Because Rob Dillingham could have moments where he, like, took your breath.
way in a way that a lot of players just don't like just an excitement and uh you know just a thrill
that you don't get a lot and jasper's going to have jasper has some of that too um and rob could get
hot jasper i think can get hot you know rob could also do crazy things i think we're going to see jasper
has some games where he does crazy things i do but yeah i think the jasper being a lefty
Dillingham is a pretty good call.
And I tell you, I love our defense.
You know, last year, we just didn't have the athletes to have a good defense.
We just didn't.
And there wasn't going to be anything we could do about it.
And I love that team last year.
That team last year is going to be, end up being one of my favorites because I just
liked them.
I just liked the kids.
And they got the Sweet 16.
I think they maximize their talent.
But man, this team is so much more athletic.
And like you can just see it.
And it overwhelmed Purdue.
and they always have that problem.
When they get to the tournament, Billy Purdue always meets a team like this and it screws them over.
You know, always.
And we were that team this year in the preseason.
It'll be interesting to see if they're able to fix that during the course of the year.
And Kansas is just putting it on more than right now.
Who's next?
James.
James.
Hey, Matt.
Thanks for taking my call.
I like what you said earlier that we're the best team in the country.
Well, I mean, why not?
If they were number one, if they're number one, if they're number one,
number one, then why not?
I know it's exhibition.
Old Miss beat number two, Houston in an exhibition.
Like, the thing is, I understand Jimmy Doc said, well, Purdue didn't scout.
Well, they chose not to scout, right?
That's their choice.
But you know what?
That's not an excuse.
You don't get to say, well, I didn't study for the test so it doesn't count.
No, you still take the test.
If you choose not to study, then that's on you.
I don't think it would have made any difference.
What were they going to study?
Most of our dudes weren't here last year.
As far as Purdue, they played their three.
They have three really, really good players, really good.
And they played all three of them 30 minutes a game.
One of them had a bad game.
So be it.
Brayden Lewis missed a lot of shots.
Well, we probably had something to do with that, right?
So I'm not taking the excuses from Purdue folks.
If they were number one, then I'm going to in my mind say we're number one now.
So what I was going to say is I just told my cousin,
I just watched the number one team in the country, beat the number one team in the country.
I'll take it.
Why not?
Why not?
Right?
Why not?
Exactly what we're not.
We can be unrealistic tonight.
We'll have real conversation next week.
But tonight we can be unrealistic.
Appreciate the call.
59-280-2287.
Bill, you haven't said a lot.
Do you feel, are you unrealistic about this?
Well, I had a lot of question marks about this team, and a lot of those were answered.
I mean, Mo Diabate was incredible.
He was great.
He was somebody that can play a ton of minutes this year.
I mean, I'm just more thinking of what this team is going to look like.
Who's going to be on the outside looking in when Quaitons comes back and Jalen Lowe is here?
Yeah, I mean, if you were to do the, okay, my expectations versus what we saw in one game,
there were two guys, three guys, if you throw in Jasper Johnson, although I knew he could have moments of greatness.
But how good Malachi Marino and Yovicay and Yovic played really, really.
surprised me. I knew Malachi had it in him, but I just thought he was a freshman, whatever.
Yellovich, I don't know. I wasn't sure how much he was going to play. Well, now again, this is a team
that he probably matches up pretty well. There's a lot of Yelovitches in that game, to be honest with
you. But I liked him a lot tonight. And he didn't, and on offense, he didn't particularly shoot the
ball very well. I think he'll do better at that. Remember, Otego, he only played 17 minutes. Like,
He only play
Our best
Our preseasonal American
Play 17 minutes
Goose and Tom
were fawning over the stat
That in the first half
11 assists on 14 made baskets
That's great
That's great
Without your starting point guard
So again we shoot under
33% from three
We should probably under 30%
What do we shoot like 29
Is that what that number is
29 30 something like that
From three point land
You know
That's
I don't
I don't know, man.
There's a lot you left on the table.
We fouled a lot.
I think we gave them.
How many free throws do they have?
I think they have like 22 free throws or something like that.
They had 18 of 22.
18 of 22.
So think about that.
They scored 65 and we gave them 18 on free throws.
We fouled them a lot.
So I don't know.
I'm sure there's something to be bad.
I guess the one thing you could say is, well, we fouled them a lot.
That's a negative.
But otherwise, I don't know.
you could really complain about.
What's next?
Stub.
Stub.
How are you stub?
We're hanging number nine, man.
Also, I don't know what you can take from this game.
I know it's too early of an assessment, but they're really good.
They're long and athletic.
If I had one criticism, I don't think this team needs to shoot so many three, so early
in the shot clock.
That's the only thing.
They're long and athletic and good enough.
They don't need to do that.
I don't think that's a bad.
I don't think that's a bad analysis.
I will say, you know, we play in the SEC where the strength of the teams in that conference
is athleticism, right?
So I think we were a lot more athletic than Purdue.
We're probably going to play some teams this year, sir, in the SEC.
Like, we're not going to have that athleticism advantage.
against them a lot. Now, Purdue probably executes better than most teams in the SEC do,
but I don't think we're going to be able to just take guys off the bounce like we were doing
sometimes tonight. But Jimmy Dykes, and I think accurately described Purdue in a very nice way,
he said they're slow twitch. They are slow twitch. They are. You're exactly right. And I think
they always get hurt every year. Like,
The fact they're so methodical allows them to beat bad teams.
But when they play good teams that are athletic,
I feel like they run into this every single year.
I appreciate to call it.
Yeah, that's all I got, thank Matt.
I do feel like this is, I don't want to, you know,
it was one game for Purdue, but I do,
and they were on the road, which is part of it,
but I do feel like Purdue runs into this every year.
You play the way they play,
and you get the personnel they have,
and this happens.
I will say that brain Lewis kid's really good.
He didn't shoot the ball well tonight.
He's so smart.
It seems like he always makes the right decision.
He's athletic.
He's really good.
I don't know if he'll be national player of the year,
but he's got a real shot at.
I was Tom and Jimmy tonight.
I love Tom and Jimmy.
You know, Tom Hart, Jimmy Dykes,
he can annoy you with, like, his plane and all that stuff.
But there's no announcer in the country that does college games
that knows more about Kentucky and their team than Jimmy Dykes.
So I like that.
And if you listen, he says stuff that we've not heard about how they play.
Like when he talked about Cam Williams, he said publicly what I've had some coaches tell me privately,
which is they're really worried about his ability to guard people.
Well, Jimmy said that.
And he said it because he knows it because they told him.
And then Tom's awesome.
He had, Billy had a couple of KSR references I heard.
He mentioned Picasso.
He mentioned Ken.
Palmeroy the singer.
Okay.
I kept waiting for Annabelle or for Ryan or eating alone because I thought that might come,
but we didn't get that one.
Maybe that'll be the next game.
Let's do one more and we'll take a break.
Who's next?
Dylan.
Dylan.
Go ahead, Dylan.
What's up, Matt?
What's up?
Tom caller here.
Who off?
So I got a question and a thought for you.
Well, I'll start off with my thought.
After watching tonight's game, you know, it's just we're so athletic.
You know, that's so apparent within the first two minutes.
You can just see it physically at every position.
And it's just so refreshing to be able to see it all five spots that, you know, head-to-head,
our guy is better than your guy, or we're at least competitive.
It seems like in past years, we're always probably going to give up something,
whether it be on offensively or defensively.
We've got a guy who's better at offense, but we're having to give up something defensively.
So that's just so refreshing, and I'm excited about that.
My question, though, here, I just want to do your thoughts.
So how do you think Mark Pope is going to be able to manage all this talent?
I mean, you take in consideration quaintance and Jane Lowe, two of our best, in my opinion,
three players was out tonight.
It's a great question.
I mean, there's going to be dudes who don't play, right?
Like, there's going to be dudes who don't play.
So in particular games.
I think, I mean, this team is essentially when you get Quaintance and low back,
you got 12 guys who will expect to get minutes.
And I think it's just inevitable that at least two of those guys are not playing in games
or only playing a couple minutes.
So it's going to be, I think, a constant fight.
When you get past low away,
I mean Diabate, Aberdeen, and Garrison.
Because I think those five dudes will play no matter what.
Garrison, now his minutes can go down, but he'll play.
But those other seven guys are going to have to fight.
And there may be games where a dude like Cam Williams plays 25 minutes,
and then there might be a game where he plays two minutes.
I think that's going to happen.
And so Pope will have to be careful.
You know, I don't know how many Kentucky teams have had it to where there's this many guys who will really expect to play.
I mean, you know, the 2015 team, the platoon team, it was still only 10.
Right.
You know, this is 12.
So it'll be interesting to see.
I appreciate the call.
I mean, it's a good problem to have, though, because you'll get injuries, Billy and stuff during the year.
And so now you've got a lot of guys.
Yeah, there was a lot last year, so it can always change.
But, I mean, if I had to guess today of those 12, it's, I mean, I don't know.
I think it could change game to game.
My initial inclusion would be Cam, but it's hard to see him not playing Yelovich if he plays like tonight.
So I don't know.
I ain't going to be.
And how about Tritanoa starting?
I didn't see that coming.
I thought he did really well.
859-280-2287.
We will take a break and be right back.
This is the local toy dealers, KSR, postgame show.
Welcome back.
It is local toy dealers, KSR postgame show.
Billy, I think you have, what is it, the Johnny Rocker, what?
Yeah, so post games for the basketball season,
we have the Johnny Rockers role player of the game.
Injured, get small town compassion with big city results
when you call the Rocker at 270321-4429.
Tonight, Matt, I'm going with Mo Diabate,
eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals,
and a slam at the end of the game.
He was good on defense.
He was great rebounding, despite the early foul trouble.
He's our Johnny Rocker role player of the game.
All right.
I'll accept that.
But are starters allowed to be role players of the game?
Well, I just figured it was not the MVP of the game.
That's really the only person we don't.
Who would you have picked us our MVP?
Jasper.
I think it probably has to be Jasper.
Yeah, he was great.
Which is crazy.
uh because i wouldn't have thought that it's braiden smith by the way i get it it's not braden lewis
yeah everybody's got to give people a break to you know say mistaken words everybody was getting on tom
or uh of jimmy jakes for saying trevor noah he knew it was trent noah
but trevor noah is a famous person noa also starts with tea that can happen right billy
oh believe me i know better than anybody i got ryan isms as me too yeah
Trevor Noah, I just listened to his book a few weeks ago.
I've probably come close to calling him Trevor Noah.
They're doing The Daily Show?
I don't think he does a daily show anymore.
I don't think he's done it in years, actually.
I don't think he's done it in like four or five years.
But nevertheless, yeah.
So, all right, who's up next?
Josh is next.
Josh, I have a question for you, Billy.
Yeah.
The MLS Eastern Conference playoffs are going on.
I will give you $20 if you can name both teams in it.
enter Miami and Nashville.
You looked it up.
You looked it up.
You're not getting the 20 yards.
I didn't look anything up.
You looked it up.
You're cheating.
I saw a graphic earlier in the day.
I knew it.
I'm glad you're being honest.
All right.
Go ahead.
Josh is up.
Josh, go ahead, John.
What up, Matt.
Listen, what about that Boiler Muse guy on Twitter being an absolute goober?
Being like, oh, this is personal.
Like, what are you talking about, dude?
like we don't think about Purdue ever.
Yeah, I don't think anybody does, really.
Probably only Indiana fans really think of it.
Yeah, it's weird because, you know,
Purdue has been a power for the last five years.
You could argue next to Yukon and maybe Houston,
the most consistently good team,
but I never think about them as one, honestly.
Yeah, for, but yeah, other than that,
I'm going to eat like three Papa John's pizzas
tonight in honor of Yellowvich.
So, y'all have a good night, go cat.
Appreciate it.
And how about, I mean,
I mean, Louisville's down 15.
McHale Brown, one of 13 in his first game.
It's one game, but that's not good.
In a game I know he was hyped up about because of the playing against Darren Peterson.
Darren Peterson, by the way, 24 points in the first half, two in the second half.
It's crazy how that goes.
There's Jacques Vaughn.
There's a guy.
Point guard you.
Yeah, who's next?
Avery is next.
Avery, his point guard you.
Avery, go ahead.
Hello, first time caller.
Who are?
I just wanted to say that my favorite play was when Jasper Johnson had the crazy dunk,
and me and my dad went nuts.
Yeah, Jasper, he's really athletic.
Now, is he your favorite player?
Yeah, yeah.
All right, see, I appreciate the call.
I think you're going to get that from kids.
the same way that Dillingham kind of had that thing where Dillingham was every kid's favorite
player even on a team with Reed Shepard kids still were like Rob Dillingham.
I think Jasper Johnson has the same thing.
Then you throw in, he's got a TikTok presence, that whole 6-7 thing that he was a part of.
I think you're going to see, I think Jasper Johnson is going to be little kids are going to be
big-time Jasper Johnson things.
And I love that he's a kid from Kentucky.
I mean, I continue to say, the fact that we have three kids from Kentucky on the team,
and we don't have to, like, force them to play.
Like, they really deserve to play is awesome.
Who's next?
Lucas.
Lucas.
Lucas.
Hey, Matt, I am so pumped about this team this season.
I think we're going to have such a great year, and I think we can make a big run in the tournament.
Quick question for you here, though.
How do you think Jane Quayton's, do you think he'll have a big impact coming in later
the season? Yes, I do. I mean, he's too good. He's too Atlantic and he's too, he's too good. I think his
impact is, I mean, he'll be a great defensive player. But, you know, I mean, I think he was what,
third team or something preseason all SEC. I don't know if he'll be that in part because I don't
know that he needs to be that. I don't know that he's going to need to get those kind of minutes.
You know what I mean?
Like I, but I do think.
Here's where he's going to be really important.
He's going to be able to guard guys that really no one else on our team can.
And he's going to be able to do some stuff athletically.
And more importantly, he's going to provide matchup issues.
Like, like, imagine anyone on Purdue trying to guard him.
You know what I mean?
Like, who's guarding him?
I don't think anyone could.
Nobody's going to.
Right.
So that's the thing.
And a dude built like him, he will just, they'll be a game or two where, like,
the other team just won't have a guy who can handle him,
and that'll be the difference in the game.
So I appreciate the call.
I think that's where he'll make a big impact.
But, like, the good thing is, you know, if these big,
if Malachi Moreno is as good as he's been so far, like, you know,
what if Malachi Marino can be 75% of Jake Quaint's?
Well, that's pretty good.
Yeah, that was the surprise of the night, honestly, Malachi.
And I was surprised how good they look playing two bigs a lot.
Because they got so many bigs with these guys that you want to play to
because you've got, you're going to have Garrison, Moreno, Yelovich, Diabate,
and then you may also have Quaintance.
So there's good, like, to get all those guys' minutes, you're going to want to play two.
But I was worried it would screw up the offense.
Well, it didn't tonight, at least for the vast majority of the game.
Who's up next?
Another Josh.
Josh, go ahead, Josh.
859, 280,000.
2080.
Hey, man.
So I was so worried tonight that our threes wouldn't show up.
And I was worried, you know.
Well, they did really, and we still won.
They really did.
But we still did quite a bit.
But, you know, we shot 9 of 29.
Yeah, we shot 9 of 29, but still won by 13.
You're right.
and we looked amazing.
But me and my daughter wanted it,
she's super nervous.
So let's give her a second.
But here we go.
We want to go.
Love it.
Thank you.
There you go, girl.
Thank you very much.
Appreciate the call.
Billy, your kind of thing there.
What's up next?
Destin is that.
Destin.
Go ahead, Destin.
Matt, I got a couple things.
I'm going to go real quick.
Me and the 233.
UK future point guards here in the truck.
Hadn't even got to watch the game yet.
Left the football game of Hoptown County,
they were getting blowed out.
Okay, let me ask you a question.
Was that the final Hoptown Christian County game?
It's supposed to be, yes.
It was 22 to 6, and they were waiting on a drone to leave the field.
I was like, I've had enough.
But like it had to be cool for the community.
I bet it had a huge crowd, did it?
Oh, it was, it was,
It was the most people at a Hoptown County game in 20 years.
It was amazing, honestly.
Well, I mean, I hate that that whole thing, I mean, it's probably good or maybe it's not good.
You would have a better opinion to me on the schools combining.
But I'm glad they got to have one more kind of send off with the whole community there.
That's good.
Yes, sir.
And, man, I just, I had to call in.
I love what Pope's doing.
We've got our team back.
It's amazing.
I love the Kentucky kids playing.
Let's go get number nine.
and shout out to my kid, Kaylin,
her in the Christian County Colonel Bay.
I'm going to play for a state title tomorrow.
Well, good luck to her.
Appreciate the call.
Probably a lot of empty seats in this crowd, Billy, for Louisville, Kansas.
What's that about?
I don't know.
That's a lot of empty seats.
You're going to have to hand out more tickets.
That's kind of amazing for a game where you're,
I mean, I know it's an exhibition,
but you're playing Kansas.
When's Kansas is going to come to Louisville?
All right.
Who's next?
Bearclaw.
Bearclaw.
Go ahead.
I'm excited for this team.
Really excited for this team.
I was glad Billy called up on Diabate earlier.
I was one of my favorite players to watch in Alabama, and I was so excited we got him.
We needed him on defense, and this is going to be a great team this year.
He's going to have a lot of games this year where he has like a double-double.
I mean, again, part of it will be a amount of minutes he plays, but if he gets the minutes, he's a double-double machine.
That's right.
And I like to see Colin Chandler on Smith there.
He shut him down a couple of times.
That was nice to see.
I thought the guys guarding Smith.
It was Aberdeen, Chandler, a little bit of Jasper.
I mean, they played really well against him.
I mean, because that kid is good.
And I thought the way they play, I thought that's about as good as you can guard him
in a course of a game like that.
Yeah, I thought he was going to tear us up.
But we shut him down pretty good for the.
most part. Yeah, you're right. Yep. I appreciate the call. How about the stat, Billy, that Purdue has had a
seven-footer on their roster, 14 straight seasons? I didn't know that. I love that stat. And I think
their seven-footer hit a three-pointer tonight. He did. I think they said what he was seven-foot
seven-four. Yeah. He actually looked pretty good. I felt like he scored a bunch.
Yeah, he actually looked all right. Might be the Zach. Where do they find these people?
The pipeline.
They just keep finding Zach Edie's all over.
They had a couple before him, and where do they find these guys?
All right, let's do one more.
We'll take our final break.
Who's next?
Alex.
Alex.
Alex.
Alex.
Hey, Matt.
First time, long time.
Who are?
I got two quick points.
First of all, draft teams has this team 14 to 1 and win the national championship.
That seems crazy high to me.
How many teams are ahead of them?
Like, which teams have better odds?
I'll be honest. I only focused on Kentucky and I went on to bed.
I mean, I can tell you, I would not bet on Purdue to win the championship.
Just because they'll find a team.
Absolutely not.
They'll play a team like us.
I mean, Mike, I do think before he's done, Kelvin Samson's going to get one.
So if you were to say to me, who would I make the favorite right now?
I would probably say Kelvin Samson.
I think they play like Purdue, but they're tough and play good defense.
I mean that like they're seniors and they're, you know, they stay in the system.
but they're defensive and physical.
Went to championship game last year.
So, yeah, my initial pick would be to them, but I'd have to look.
It's Houston and Purdue at plus 950.
Those are the only teams ahead of us?
Duke is plus 1,300.
Yukon's plus 1,300, Kentucky plus 1400.
See, those are all just because of names.
I mean, Duke, Yukon, and probably Kentucky are their cousin names,
and they're trying to kind of get people to bet them.
But yes, 14 to 1, I agree with you, sir,
not a bad bet.
Great.
Yeah.
And then the last point, I don't know what
you think of this,
but 14 years ago,
you wrote an article on Grantland
in the fall of 2011
detailing how it was Kentucky's time.
We were ushering in the Calgary era.
I forgot that.
I did write an article on Grantland.
You did.
You did.
And it was time for Kentucky
to win the national title.
Well, here we are,
14 years removed from our last national title.
We're ushering in the Mark Pope era.
it's our time again to go win the national title win number nine that's all i got cast by 90
appreciate the call you know what that's weird because that's one of those things in life that for
some reason had completely escaped me until he said that billy i think i'd forgotten i did that
14 years ago yeah we i think a lot of those grant land articles are not online anymore
but i did write that i don't remember why no i mean i don't remember who asked me
somebody asked me to write that and I actually think it was pretty good and I honestly have not thought
about that article in 10 years until he just said that huh well if it's online corey price will find it
cori price find that article for me because I'd like to have that I've completely forgot I did that
85928027 Louisville is down 81 71 to kansas with two minutes to go in a two-thirds empty
center in an exhibition game, whereas Kentucky's arena was, what percentage?
I mean, what percentage full?
95% full Rupp Arena.
We'll take a break and be right back.
This is the local toy dealers, KSR postgame show.
It is the final segment of the local toy dealers KSR post game show.
Do you remember Billy the last time I had the audience of these guys?
Do you remember what happened?
It was after the Oklahoma game in the SEC tournament.
After the Oklahoma game in the SEC tournament.
But what happened during that hour?
You guys were on the roof.
Well, no, that was the Oklahoma game.
The game actually afterwards we lost.
Who do we lose to in the tournament that year?
Alabama.
We lost to Alabama.
And if you remember after the game, they were all sitting on a couch
and the weight of the couch collapsed during the middle of the show.
And they all ended up in the floor.
I'm hoping.
That didn't happen again, did it?
We were in an Airbnb for that one, so I didn't care about the couch.
I'm hoping my couch has survived this one.
859-280-2287.
Did you know the NBA is on Amazon Prime tonight?
No.
It's the debut of Amazon Prime.
I will ask you, it's Nick Celtics.
Can you take a guess who the two big announcers on Amazon Prime are for the NBA?
You've heard of both of them.
I have no clue.
Who is it?
Iron Eagle and Stan Van Gundy.
That's your main announcing crew for Amazon Prime.
I love a little eye, and I'm surprised you're not watching the World Series.
I'm going to do, I'm watching Louisville right now.
I was just, I hate watching.
I am going to turn on, I am going to turn on the baseball.
859-280-2287.
That's the guy for Louisville.
That's the guy that Pope coach, right, the Egyptian guy.
What's his name, Ali Norani, I think.
Who's up next?
Trey.
Trey.
Trey, go ahead, Trey.
Hey, Matt, how you doing?
Doing good.
I just wanted to say that I was,
was really impressed with our defensive rebounding tonight.
I agree with you.
They usually killed teams with offensive rebounds.
We held them to seven.
Yeah.
And it seems like over the past few years that we've really had trouble with that.
And also, O way after the game, saying that he really wanted to have the team defend
the home court.
That was really nice to hear also.
I like that.
He did say that on the SEC network, said defending home court was important to
him. You know, these guys, look, this is not to say that the other way didn't work because it did,
but it is cool, and I know UK fans like it, that the way Pope sells this experience to players
is not, hey, use this as a path to your next spot. He sells the time they're here, the fans,
and things like defending the court, and I agree with you. I think that's very cool.
Yes. Thank you. Great game tonight.
Appreciate the call.
You know, the other way work, too, and we love those players.
So I'm not trashing that.
But this way, I do think, connects with fans in some way more.
We'll do six more and call tonight.
Who's next?
Chris.
Chris, 899-280-2287.
Go ahead.
Hey, first time, long time.
Who are?
What's up?
Hey, you know, this was an exhibition game, but I took this as a season opener game.
I mean, I, man, I was impressed how many weapons.
we have on offense this year.
You know, we went to O-A last year and seemed like this.
I kept on trying to figure out who was scoring.
I don't know the players yet.
Well, part of the problem is Jasper Johnson and Aberdeen look exactly the same
like they from far away.
They're both left-handed.
They're both point guards.
They both have the same hair, and they both kind of play the same way.
And so, like, it's easy to sometimes not be able to tell.
And they're one of them's number one.
The other one's number two.
And so it's sometimes hard to tell which one's which.
And number two, Chandler, after his layup or dunk, he did a little header.
Like, I saw the header.
Did you see the header after that?
What do you mean the header?
Like where he taps his head?
Yeah, he tapped the ball with his head after the, after went.
Oh, you mean a header like a soccer header?
I didn't see that, no.
Yeah, go back and look.
He does a little, I mean, he does a little soccer header on that.
Okay.
I look.
I did not see that.
I did not.
Yeah, he had butted it.
and then they called delay a game, I think.
Oh, is that what they called?
I didn't see why I saw they called delay a game.
That's why they called delay a game.
Okay, gotcha.
I didn't know what that was for.
All right.
Well, I appreciate the call.
Yeah, two great dunks, the Jasper Johnson and the Colin Chandler dunk.
Chandler dunk to me, I got to go back and look at it.
It had some, like, he's kind of floating in the air parts to it.
Who's next?
Cannon.
Cannon.
What's up, Cannon?
So I just got home from work, which,
means that I had to listen on the radio and let me just say that Goose Givens might be my
favorite person on this whole earth.
He gets so excited, doesn't he?
I mean, he's like the, he gets excited, but he's also like the proud uncle when he's calling
the game.
Yeah, and then just let me share this little interaction just to show what BBN is like.
I work at the automotive center in Berea Walmart, and this lady got a flat tire on 75,
and I asked where she was from, and she was coming from Williamsburg, collection
for an exhibition that just shows what BVN is.
I hope you, were you able to get her tire done so she could get there?
Of course, because I know if it was me in that situation,
I don't want somebody to do the same.
I love it.
Appreciate the call.
Good man.
Four, uh, four left.
Who's next?
Todd is next.
Todd, go ahead, Todd.
Hello, Matt.
What's going on, Todd?
The game, doing well, been a while since I've talked to you.
go for it tonight as the game started i thought kentucky looked like the best team from the tip
till the end and that totally surprised me i i just thought by perdu being ranked number one that
it would be a a really tough game but man a lot we just really look great and perdu just didn't
look like a number one.
No, they really didn't.
They really didn't.
And I didn't want to like, you know, I don't want to crush them because they,
uh, they did not look like a number one team.
I mean, I, I think we played really well.
But I don't think we played Todd like insanely well.
Like I thought, you know, I thought we, I thought we were really good.
But yeah, they don't look like a number one team.
But I think we're also used to Todd playing teams with like great athletes.
And they're just a different kind of team.
And I think it bites them in the.
the tournament. They're a big 10 team. Like, they are, big 10 teams play like that, right? And they're
the best big 10 team. And we play like SEC teams. And I think SEC teams really give them a hard
time because they just, they can't guard them. Yeah. I'm just looking forward to a,
real good year, hoping we'll go 40 and 0. Well, let's slow down. We're not going to go 40 and no.
I mean, we're going to lose games. I appreciate to call. I mean, we can
I know Louisville lost tonight.
We could lose them.
That's on their home floor.
You know, road games are hard.
We have a hard road conference schedule.
Like we play all the hard teams on the road.
We tend to play the easy teams at home.
We got kind of a weird draw with that.
But nevertheless, we're going to be good.
Three more.
Who's next?
Don.
Don.
Don't.
Really trying to temper my excitement tonight.
Don't temper.
A little bit hard to do.
Don't tip.
No reason to do.
And I don't care.
that this was preseason.
We just beat the preseason number one team
with arguably our two best players not playing tonight.
Or two of our five best players not playing them.
So I think two of our five's fair, yeah.
And I'm super excited about this.
I mean, it's been a while since we could get this excited
about one of our top two sports programs.
And I am.
I love it.
Well, I mean, I was really excited last year
when we beat Duke in that first game.
Probably too.
because it felt like Kentucky basketball was back.
But I never really thought that team could win a title.
I think this team can win a title.
I think this team can win a title.
And I think that's really exciting.
That's great, man.
I'm just,
I'm glad to be in this state right now.
I agree with you.
Appreciate the call.
When did they start having ads on the helmets?
Is that,
Billy,
how long has that been going?
I'm with the World Series right now.
Is that normal?
First time I've seen it,
but I haven't watched a ton of days.
I'm sure they've been doing.
I mean,
games but I don't really focus on the
Yeah, you do have season tickets.
I do have season tickets.
You think I would notice.
Behind home plate.
But yeah, I haven't really noticed.
Who's next?
Two more.
Elijah.
I actually watched more baseball in the last two years than my whole.
Hey, Matt, how you doing?
Maybe this should have been going on the whole time.
I should have.
It's never really processed it.
Go ahead.
You there, Matt?
Yes.
Last year, our card play
was extremely concerning.
and probably lost us a few key games.
Do you think that's a concerning point moving forward with this roster?
Well, we don't have Jalen Lowe yet, though, right?
I mean, if you believe like I know, I know that.
That Jalen Lowe is our second best player.
And maybe in like the initiator of our offense, he's not here,
then I can't be concerned yet, you know what I mean?
So, no, I'm not concerned.
Let me watch a couple games with J.Low and then maybe I'd have a different view,
but right now, no, I'm not concerned.
Is the guard play the key for this year, do you think,
or will it be other ways to kind of facilitate and win?
I think the key for this team is,
I always think the key is what we don't do well, right?
Because we've got to make it better.
So last year we knew we could shoot.
My question was, are we going to be able to create offense?
In key possessions, are we going to be able to create shots?
This year, I think we're going to be able to do it.
The key is going to be, we're going to get open three,
and when it's not Trent Noah and, you know, can those,
can Jalen Lowe, Otego, the Bigs, you know, can those guys, Aberdeen,
can they hit the open looks that they get?
That'll be the key to the season.
And let's see what happens.
This is one game.
But if we're hitting three with this team, if we're hitting threes,
we're going to be really hard to beat.
Yeah, I agree.
Thank you, Matt.
Appreciate it.
I mean, you saw we had a ton of.
open looks tonight. And we took some bad threes too, but I bet you we were like nine of 17
or whatever from open threes. That'll be, that'll be the question. One more and then we'll call
tonight. Who's next? Chris. Chris, go ahead, Chris. Hey, Matt Jones, first time ever. Who are?
You know, just real quick, you know, I really think that this is finally a great moment. You know,
after all the Cal years and in the last few years that we just had some concerns,
and now we're seeing this team.
We beat Purdue, regardless of its exhibition, but to reiterate the rest of the fans,
Go Cats, you know, we lose six games.
We don't win the SEC, but we tough it out.
We win the National Championship.
God bless, take care.
Thank you, Go Cats.
Appreciate the call.
I like that prediction.
And I like tonight.
Tonight was a great night.
Tonight is great for the program, great for the fan base.
packed house, exciting win against a good team.
Lexington has a buzz about it.
Who do we play tomorrow in football?
Doesn't matter.
Yeah, it doesn't matter.
For tonight, everybody enjoy it.
And at least until Tuesday, we're going to say this team can win the national championship.
Cats beat the number one Purdue Boilermakers at home,
7865 in an exhibition game.
And Kentucky basketball is back.
And it's going to be a great year.
