gang that's amazing say that again the lady gang things are about to change around here each week
we catch up with hollywood's hottest girl posse kelty knight becca tobin and jack vanik
hello hello hello welcome to lady gang i am becca tobin here with jack vanek and kelty knight
hello oh my god wow we do not have that much energy that was forced friend that was really
forced it's wonderful for me well not for me i naturally feel high as a kite really how are
your energy levels lately pretty terrible yeah okay i'm improving you keep it together yeah
your spray tan feet are not keeping it together i'll tell you that right now honestly it could
be worse jack i don't understand i apply sunless tanner once a year and my application is still
better than that you literally do a weekly do you go to a person this is this is self-done clearly
you need to buff that out you know i never think about it when i'm doing it but yes i know
i just like kind of like push it down and which obviously it gives me the sock you have to go all
the way down to the top you just have to let it like blend and like taper it out nobody's seeing
my feet except everybody right now it's summer everybody on footfinder.com that's gonna be
you just gave us free content it's a preview you better get this before you're wearing white for a
week i know wait this is not related but like can you do just feet on only fans or does it have to
be sexual yeah you can just two feet for sure should i get an only fans yes i don't think so
i don't i think it's a slippery slope i think if you need it here's the thing it's like anything
risk first reward yeah you know that's true if you need the money and this is a way for you to
make it no harm no foul but you don't need you have a job jack you've actually a couple jobs
so i don't know why we're acting as if you are i need the foot money are like about to be yeah
you know it's true all right on tough times whatever she's anxious for the wedding the
wedding finances get us i mean there's just big chunks of money leaving yeah you know
yeah i'm not used to so it's energetic money is just energy yeah easy come easy go that's true
that's what i've been trying to think every time i get stressed i'm like don't think about it no
it's just money it's like what you can't even see it you can't even feel money is not real
anyways it's not real and honestly i'm not having children and these nieces and nephews are not
being that nice to me so i'm probably gonna like just spend all my money and not leave them shit
do it you should do that anyway that's the beauty of not having children is you can blow your money
that's right go travel everywhere see ya see ya okay um well on that note it's time for
good week yes it is bad week oh no um since we are all demons who only talk about vapid things
every once in a while something really major happens in the lady gang community and we realize
that we are incredible human beings we're such good people the best the top notch i can see a
hello hello hello yep there you go no this in all honesty something happened in the lady gang that
I was sitting getting my nails done. See, I got a sprinkle in the vapid things for you. And I got a
message from beautiful Alex who works for us and she was flagging some stuff going on in the
Facebook group. And it was a conversation being had with a new mom who was kind of just reaching
out to get some support in her struggles with being a new mom, which let me tell you, they're
real yeah and um it was really just in uh her reaching out being like guys you know this is
going on things are hard um and everybody was jumping in being like it's gonna get better and
it's this is just really hard right now and you have to know that there's a light at the end of
the tunnel and all these beautiful messages from the leading community and i'm like that's wonderful
but words are words and sometimes we want to do more than just support one another with words
And so the three of us came together and we decided that we thought that this woman sounded
like she would benefit greatly from some talk therapy.
Um, and we turned to better help our sponsor for many, many, many years and asked them
if they would be willing to collaborate with us in gifting some therapy sessions to this
beautiful family.
And within seconds, it's crazy.
It was crazy. Within seconds, they responded, resounding, absolutely. Tell us how we can help.
Tell us how we can jump in. What do you need? What do you need? What do you need?
So I just, it's a testament to this community because everybody was so active in this
conversation that it came to our attention. And then a testament to our wonderful sponsors
and our sales team who made the connection and were willing to make this ask for us.
but um it's also just a psa because while it can be so dark in those first months first years of
having a new baby there is some beauty that comes from it and um i'm just so grateful that we were
able to do this for her yeah it was so amazing it's a real good week and of course this podcast
is sponsored by better help and so we're so excited we got to work with them on this and
they went above and beyond so yeah way above and beyond and our community is just the best
what's your bad week well my bad week is actually in honor of that conversation i was posting on
instagram about some trials and tribulations of being a new mom and juggling being away from him
and being sad and having a lot of guilt and just feeling all the things yeah um and then a mutual
friend of kelty and i's emily she wrote me in a dm she's like you've got this she's like motherhood
is a blessing and a bitch. And I was like, God, that is the absolute truth. I'm like, it is the
biggest blessing. It's the greatest thing ever, but there's nothing convenient about it. There's
nothing easy about it. Like it is a bitch. A bitch is a really good way to describe it. I'm assuming
it's so, it was so good. And I just was like, I have to say this on the podcast because it is
freaking true i have to say ford is getting cuter by the second thank you like jared and i every
time you or zach post a picture because you know it's few and far between oh yeah you don't get
much content so anytime we like watch the videos together we're like look at my cheeks
he's real cute he's definitely making some improvements in the looks department because
he was not necessarily cute he's always been adorable no this is what happens when you're a
mom you don't realize until it's later like it's hindsight where you look back at pictures where
you're like i posted that because i thought he looked cute and he didn't look cute like it's
like how i felt about myself in my 20s like now when i look back yeah i mean every baby's cute
blah blah blah shut up everybody shut up but some of them have their moments and i'm happy to report
that now he's hitting a stride with his, he has this weird, like Kentucky waterfall mullet thing
happening with his hair. He's got a lot of it. The back of it's curling from the humidity in
Texas. His eyes are staying like so light. I have no idea how this is happening. Zach has really
dark eyes. I have like pretty bland looking eyes. I wouldn't describe your eyes as a blend. No,
you have like bright blue eyes. No, they're great. They're like a greenish, like whatever.
well they're not buttholes they're dirty no dirt is brown like the color of my eyes
no but anyways he's really getting he's really getting cute oh i can't just i need to see him
again i was talking jared and i talk about him so much but i'm like the last time i met him he was
a blob yeah like he wasn't even a person he's very manipulative though because now he knows that i
like mouth kisses and so when he gets something he likes or if i'm wearing something exciting like i
I was wearing colored beaded necklaces the other day and he comes over to me and he starts
playing with them and playing with them.
And then he makes the connection that I'm wearing them and he looks at me and he plants
a kiss on my mouth.
I love him.
Cause he's like approving of my luck.
So no.
And I like let him play with a light switch that he wasn't supposed to and he plays with
it.
And then he looked at me and he kissed me on the mouth cause he knew that if he did
that, I'd let him stay longer.
Shut up.
Yeah.
Wait, I love this.
I love this so much.
This goes into my good week.
Great.
Please.
Okay, great.
so carmella christina's daughter is five and she's like going on 17 and i just like have not had a
lot of children in my life that i've been like really close with yeah and carmella's like my
girl like i go over all the time we live 10 minutes away so nice and like my good week is
that like carmella opens like you know like she was a baby for a long time so i opened there hi
it's auntie kelty like i want to explain who i am so she doesn't like scared or whatever
she opens the door and she goes oh my god you'll never believe what happened today
oh my god and her little leggings she's got like a little science tunic on and she's like and then
she like walks like she just opens the door and she's like hey you'll never believe what happened
today and like just walks me in like christina would you know and then she's just talking to
me and i'm like oh my god how's school like you're going to a birthday party is your boyfriend going
to be there and she's like which one and it's just like oh no no no no because i was like the
guy your birthday party that you were excited she's like no that's over oh my god she's gonna
be a terror i she's a little christina she got a little stripe in her hair like christina she's so
cute anyway so that's my that's my good week um bad week is that i'm an idiot do you guys remember
when we had the guy freery thing on lady gang tv i was like flavor town is your place or whatever
yeah i just posted it because i just found it again so amazing you're like so genuine is it a
place can we go there can we go there like no it lives inside you so my half sister lives inside
you my half sister and her husband were here from london and the whole time he was like yeah
like there was this word that the dan was using and he's like oh yeah that guy's a total hair
farmer and i was like oh and then i'm just like interesting and then and then i was thinking of
like what is a hair farmer and i'm like okay so we're from alberta like oh so it's like a farmer
but like maybe it's that new like chic kind of farmer that has like you know long hair but
they're a farmer like not an old school farmer and then whatever and then and then he's showing
me this he's like no no like a bit he shows me this band i'm like oh it's a band like the hair
farmers like i get that and then i was like what's the hair farmer he's like you know a guy with long
hair farming hair and i was like oh wow it's jerry the hair farmer you are a hair farmer
I felt like...
Oh, he's been called that before.
You have?
Oh, that must be bro talk.
Yes, by another guy.
So he's a real hair farmer.
Oh, there's no way a woman would use that term.
No.
No way.
He's a real hair farmer.
Anyway, Jack?
Okay, so mine is a new word for the dictionary.
Now, I don't know if we've used this before, but I re-saw it, and I was like, it's worth
talking about again.
I approve.
And it's sexual sorbet, which is a sexual encounter designed to cleanse the proverbial
palate before entering a new relationship.
Oh, that's good.
Like, everybody needs a sexual sorbet.
It's like a kiwi watermelon on a hot summer day.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's a sexier way to say rebound, too.
Exactly.
You need, like, a good rebound.
It's like a douche for your douche canoe.
And they're always douchey.
A sexual sorbet can't be, like, a good guy.
No, it can't be someone you're falling in love with.
No, it's, like, the hottest, douchiest loser.
Yes, yes.
Sexual sorbet.
I thought that was good.
I wonder if we've been anyone's sexual sorbet.
I don't think men feel the need to cleanse their palate sexually, though.
No, they're always more and more.
I've definitely been someone's like, I'm using this girl for sex.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
I mean, most of my life.
Yeah.
And my marriage, you know.
Same.
I have moments where I'm like, are you just in this for sex?
You don't really like me.
You couldn't possibly.
And then his answer is something like, wouldn't I be having to have sex to be using you?
I do that too.
I'm like, all you care about is the sex.
And he's like, we haven't had sex in forever.
he's like uh i think i got a shitty deal i'd put up with all this for that amount of sex
the way that we think so highly of ourselves okay my bad week okay remember how i was talking about
my face the facebook group and selling the stuff on face or not selling the stuff but leaving it
out we'll try to sell it leaving it whatever yeah so i posted it on instagram and then i'm
scrolling facebook and then all of a sudden i see my post talking about the facebook group
in our facebook group what some person had randomly seen it on instagram and posted it
into our apartment gang group no my apartment complex's facebook group and they're like oh
my god ha ha ha this happens here so much she didn't know that i lived at the apartment that
she was talking about wait i need you to hold on was it the facebook group for the lady gang

yes people leave shit out and they try to sell like shitty stuff on instagram you were doing
this on the podcast okay yes i remember this so you're talking about on the podcast people
leave shitty things in the lobby and people try to like sell shitty things yes yes i posted the
clip on my own instagram oh okay my clip on instagram got shared into our apartment complexes
facebook which is not knowing that i lived there so the girl follows you on instagram obviously
she doesn't even follow me she just randomly saw it on instagram it must have been like this
happens all the time in ours but you actually live there in that one did anybody make the
connection like this is jack vanek and she lives in this apartment no but i commented on it being
like that's me shut up and now she just tries to reply to me all the time on instagram but
new friends yeah i was like this is the most meta shit in the entire world like she had no idea who

our guest today is here to help our hormones baby she's a functional nutritionist hormone
expert author and founder of the flow living hormone center her work is based on the idea
that hormonal imbalances can be corrected through diet lifestyle changes and natural remedies
she's the author of a bunch of books but if you haven't read women code it is like life-changing
i think becca talked about it two years ago in the pod whenever it came out and then i read it
and then Jack read it. And then, I mean, it is Woman Code, Perfect Your Cycle, Amplify Your
Fertility, Supercharge Your Sex Drive, Become a Power Source is life-changing. She's featured in
various media outlets, including the New York Times, Forbes, MindBodyGreen, and you're about
to have your life change forever. Hormones is one of our most popular topics on Lady Gang,
and I'm so excited to welcome her to the podcast. We finally got her. We've been trying for so long.
Elisa Vidi, welcome to the podcast. Wow. Thank you. So excited to be here. Such
a fan of the lady gang thank you also we have a lot of girls in the community reading your most
recent book in the flow uh there's a lot of conversations on the facebook group all about it
so uh and the app and all the fun things we were just discussing the app before you came on yes
and you have become a like cyber phenomenon when it comes to talking about periods and we follow
so many girls that post, it's my luteal phase. This is my workout today. So thank you in advance
for all of that work that you're doing for all of us. Thank you. It's, um, it's been a journey
and it's fun. And I'm really happy that we are normalizing a conversation that basically says,
Hey, we have to include female hormones in the mix here. Otherwise women can't be
their healthiest self. You know, and that's kind of how we've been operating up until now is
we've been kind of keeping them siloed, keeping them in the box, keeping them like,
oh yeah, we only think about our hormones once a month or when we're trying to get pregnant or
during menopause, but really your hormones are happening every day. So if your self-care plan
isn't factoring them in, you just can't be healthy in the way that you're designed to be.
What I'd like to think is what we're doing is just normalizing this everyday hormonal care
kind of conversation? I read woman code and I was like gobsmacked and then I'm a boo-jower.
And so I made my whole flow chart and like had all the color codes that I was, basically I was
doing your app on paper cause I'm a writer. And, um, I gave up in, looks like December before the
new year even started. I'm still just tracking my period because I'm overwhelmed and I feel like
that's why I need the app. So, but I want you to explain if you can explain the mention, like the
four phases that you've, you, you really are the mastermind behind us knowing about this. Can you
just like give basic, you know, start us there and then we'll go into the high end thoughts.
The idiot's guide. Yeah. I mean, listen, I also want to just say no one should feel badly that
they don't know this stuff because I mean, I've taught everywhere. I've had ER doctors. So for
example, when I give workshops, I always ask, Hey, can anybody come up and draw me the chart of the
menstrual cycle hormones. No one can ever do it. And one time I asked that question, there just
happened to be an ER doctor in the audience and she raised her hand and she was like, hey, you
know, I just want to state for the record here that I'm an ER doctor. I can't even come up and
do this. So if I can't do this, how is anybody else supposed to do this? And I thought that was
a really powerful moment. I really appreciated her sharing that because it's not because we're
not smart that we don't know it. It's because we're not taught any of this information. And
that's why we don't know it. Once you know it, you can't unring the bell. That's what everybody
likes to say. It's like, once I read your book or once I understand this, there's now it's just
your new playing field. So here's how it works. You've got the cycle. It lasts approximately a
month. There's a range. There's no perfect day. 28 days is just this average amount of days,
but you can have a range that's, you know, anywhere between 26 and 32 days, as long as
it's consistent for you. And every month it's the same 26 days or 30 days or whatever it is.
Wait, is it bad if it's not? Yeah. If it's very, if it's sort of like,
sometimes it's 32 days, sometimes it's 24 days, you know, then we start to say, okay,
there's some hormonal imbalance at play here. That's beyond the average, you know, you just
having a special unique fingerprint of how frequent your cycle is. So then in the cycle,
you have four distinct phases, right? You have the follicular phase, which is where the little
tiny eggs are developing on the ovary and you have low levels of hormones, but a slight increase in
estrogen taking place. Then you have the big party moment of the cycle, which is ovulation. This is
when the egg breaks free from the ovary. You have a super surge of estrogen at this time,
and everything is feeling the way it feels for that three or four day period of time.
Then you have the luteal phase, which is the longest phase of the cycle,
eight to 12, sorry, 10 to 12 days of the cycle. This phase of the cycle is when we have the
introduction of a hormone called progesterone and we should have it be in more greater concentration
than estrogen. And when you have enough progesterone versus estrogen, you build a nice
thick lining to your uterus. It stays in place for the right amount of time. And you have no
symptoms at all of PMS of anything you have just feeling great. In fact, the progesterone,
we can get into all the effects of these hormones on our brain chemistry, but that progesterone is
my favorite hormone because it just makes you calm, clear, and focused, you know? But if you
don't feel calm, clear, and focused, you don't have enough progesterone, which is a lot of what
women are experiencing. If you have any PMS, for example, instead of having that golden ratio of
more progesterone to estrogen, you have the inverse. You have way too much estrogen and
not enough progesterone and you feel frazzled, irritable, you know, all the PMS kind of things,
right? Have you met this woman? Have you met a woman that has no PMS symptoms? Does she exist?
Is this a unicorn? We're looking at her. A, hi. Is it you? And B, all the women who start using
the cycle syncing method that I created and that deal with their hormones, then yes, you can eat
your way out of this improper hormone balance, right? Wow. I was just on a deadline for another
media article. Hormones are made from the food that you eat. There's two categories of hormones.
They're amino acid-based hormones and lipid-based hormones, right? Which are sex hormones. They're
steroid hormones, right? So that's estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol. Those
are the fat, the lipid-based ones, steroids. Then you have all the amino acid hormones.
Where do you get amino acids and fats, right? Not from the clear blue sky, from the food that you
eat. So the idea that we think that hormones are mysterious, confusing, need medication to work
properly is really just, again, I would say a lack of understanding of how these things work and how
things are made in the body. They're manufactured from the micronutrients that you extract from the
food you eat, period. Pun intended. This is really great. And I just want to say to our listeners,
we had an amino acid expert, which just seems very intense, but we had someone kind of explain
amino acids to us a few weeks ago. So go listen to that episode because what, uh, at least the
saying here is, is obviously has to do with this. It's like, there's stuff that can't be made in
your body. You have to bring it in through food. So keep going. This is amazing. So that's the
luteal phase. Then you have the bleeding phase, which I like to, I like to call it the bleeding
phase because I find that there's a, um, it's part and parcel of the confusion that we feel
around our hormones that there's not precision with our vocabulary when we reference this.
Like, for example, the word cycle, we use euphemisms to reference bleeding. We say it's
our cycle. It's the menstrual cycle. It's menstruation. I mean, you can say menses.
Menses would also be the correct term for bleeding. But then, you know, let's call the
cycle the whole month as opposed to, oh, I'm on my cycle. No, you're on your cycle every day.
you're menstruating. And that's when the lining of the uterus is shed because all the hormones
have now reached their lowest point. And that triggers the lining to be shed. This lining,
by the way, I just want to point out is also something that is very micronutrient heavy in
terms of its requirements, because you are 3d printing through the process of this hormonal
pattern that takes place over this special menstrual cycle. You're 3d printing this very
specialized organ every single month. It has endocrine function. It has immune function.
It is so special. So it's not this like, you know, and it always bothers me when I read it in the
text, like, Oh, and then, you know, when there isn't a pregnancy, this, this lining is just
shed. Like it's like an old shoe or something you pull out of a shoe box. Like, Oh, we don't need
this paper for the shoot you know no it's a it's this hugely specialized organ i mean there are
companies now that are like figuring out how they can harvest like stem cells from placenta
to like you know promote longevity i mean people are doing interesting things we should have a much
more like pride around what our bodies are doing and and the cycle in general especially
the super cool things that happen during it like this ovulation moment and and building this organ
I mean, I'm endlessly fascinated by it, as you can see.
I've been only thinking about this since I started the period club in sixth grade when I was a little girl.
That was the first time I ever heard about it.
I just thought, are you kidding me?
This gets to happen to me?
Oh, yeah, I was all in it.
I'm still all in.
I mean, you're making periods sound so fun.
Yeah, I'm like, oh, I'm so proud of my little 3D printer in there.
Also, I'm sure you're sick of telling this story,
but I don't want to deprive the listeners of your own personal journey with PCOS and how you
started this work. Cause I think there's a lot of women who are listening, suffering with PCOS and
endo and infertility and all of these things. Um, can you just give us a little bit of, of your
background? Cause she, she walks the walk and she made the change in herself. So you should probably
listen to what she's preaching. Well, I mean, I first want to say that there are so many as an
understatement. By our last count, there are 3 billion, 3.1 billion women suffering from the
collective hormonal issues that can be out there, whether it's PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis,
infertility numbers are on the rise. They track those every decade. They just published that it
went up from one in 10 couples to now one in eight. So it's getting worse. These problems are
not going anywhere and we need a new way to deal with them. And anyway, so it's a huge problem.
I first became aware of this problem, like you said, because I discovered that I was one of these
women and I didn't know for a long time. I went a very long time without a diagnosis, but
let's just paint the picture from the age of 12 to 22. I only menstruated six times,
three of which were chemically induced with synthetic progesterone as soon as I was 16
I started going to the gynecologist even though I hadn't I only got my period like two months
before that my very first period it was very very delayed and I was itching to go to the
gynecologist because but you have to wait till you're 16 or you have your first period or
sexually active so I was like I just want to go I know something is wrong I felt it even then
She was like, no, no, it's normal. And the gaslighting began pretty much right away. Like,
it's fine. You're young. It's normal to be irregular. So all the symptoms then just
started compounding. Uh, the acne was pretty intense and it got very bad. You know, I had
cystic acne, face, chest, and back. I went from, you know, I'm five foot six. I went from like a
normal weight, you know, one, I don't even remember what it was, 140 chubby teenager to,
you know, 210 pounds, you know, that the mental health impacts of hormonal dysregulation were
pretty impressive. You know, I was like anxiety, depression, insomnia,
and it just affected everything. Uh, I felt really, I remember feeling like very trapped
in my body. I was like, I just, you know, not the me that I'm supposed to be. I felt
tired and old and, you know, and in fact, my hormone levels being the way that they were
really were very similar to someone who was postmenopausal. So that feeling of not feeling
youthful and able to focus and think straight, just all got worse and worse. So there I was,
despite all of this, still, still a super nerd and somehow managed to get myself into Johns Hopkins
university. And, um, really the symptoms kind of reached their crescendo. Like I just, all of them
got to their apex in terms of the weight, the skin, the moods, the no periods whatsoever.
And I, um, was constantly researching when I had a free minute. I mean, I had access to this
incredible library there. So I was like, I bet there's something in here to help me because
pre-internet. Okay. And so, um, so I found a little journal that described, um, it was an
obstetrics journal and it just described this thing called Stein-Levinville disease. And I was
like, this is me to a T I had every single thing for classic presentation of this disorder. So I
went to my gynecologist the next morning without an appointment as the famous story goes. And I was
like, Hey, she, you know, scared her in the parking lot. And I was like, Hey, I'm pretty
sure I figured out what's wrong with me. Can we do the test today? And I think just, you know,
she had, she knew how earnest I was from interacting with me many times. So she's
like, yeah, sure. Let's, let's do it. Which was super cool of her. We did the testing.
When I came back for the results, she sat me down and she said, you know, you're right.
This is right. You have this. Sorry. We didn't know, you know, seven, seven years of, you know,
And, and I said, okay, that's fine. You know, I'm a New Englander, born and raised. I was like,
what, what do we do now? Very practical. So what, what's, what do we do? She's like, well,
there's nothing that we can do. There's no cure. What we can do is put you on medication that
hopefully might mitigate some, lessen a little bit, some of your symptoms, but you're going to
have increasing problems as you age with fertility, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease,
cancer, you know, all the big disease of inflammation. We'll just use medication along
the way to help you. And Oh, by the way, you may never get pregnant on your own, you know,
blah, blah, blah. And I, you know, I'm 20 something in, in her office sitting there.
And I had this very profound, very clear as a bell moment. She's talking, she's like,
I'm going to write you a prescription for the pill. And my whole body just said to me very
clearly, that's not your future. And it was so, I almost like looked behind me. So I'm like,
who said that? It was, you know, so I just opened my mouth and I just repeated what I heard. I said,
that's not my future. She's like, what are you going to do? I said, I don't know,
but I'm going to take my very expensively trained mind and I'm going to go figure this out.
And that's in that moment, I sort of made a couple of commitments to myself. One,
that I would figure this out for myself, but two, that if I did figure this out,
that I would build a hormone care platform for women so that no one would feel the way that I
felt, which was scared, alone, overwhelmed. And that just became the journey of the past two
decades, really. Restoring my cycle was an incredible experience to just watch that happen,
to figure out how to manipulate my endocrine system with food and then watch it. I mean,
just everything, just starting to work the way that it was supposed to the way, I mean,
60 pounds coming off, not in the way that conventional wisdom tells you like, Oh,
you got no pain, no gain or starvation or whatever. No, just get your hormones working
and your metabolism sorts itself out. Like, Oh, big surprise. Right. And then, you know,
the skin clearing up. I mean, I would have to sit down cause I was so heavy. I couldn't stand up for
half an hour. So you just sit down and put on, I remember it was prescriptives under eye concealer
was the only thing opaque enough to cover the red, I would put that all over my face
and would take a half an hour to spackle all this acne. And still you look, you walk outside and
it's so obvious that you're wearing too much makeup that doesn't match your skin tone.
That went away. I mean, and I love talking about my skin because it's one of those things people
can see with their own eyes. You know, it's hard to see your hormones on the inside. And then of
course my cycle, having the ability to ovulate and menstruate monthly for the past two decades
is such a gift that I don't take for granted because for the first 10 years where that was
supposed to be happening, I didn't happen. And I know how much I missed out on from a health point
of view, from a personal cognitive, you know, if I could get those 10 years back, I would love to,
but instead I just want to make sure that nobody else has to go through that experience to the best
of my ability. I mean, your story is so fascinating because it's like you had to be your
own advocate for yourself. And especially with women's health, I feel like we have to do that
all of the time. Because even when you said early in the episode, it's like I was being gaslit when
I was like 16 years old. And I think every woman out there has experienced that in some capacity
where it's like, no, something is off. I can feel it in my bones. Yeah. And I have to give credit
to my mom. I mean, people often ask me like, how did you have the wherewithal to advocate for
yourself at such a young age. And I think it was just growing up in an environment where my mom was
very much always asking questions and always very like, let's use medication only when absolutely
necessary. So there was so much pressure put on me in these conversations to just get right on the
pill. And I think that had I not just, and my mom was often not even in the room for these
conversations because at a certain point I was just going by myself to these appointments.
So I think it was just, you know, kind of having that be in the ether in my home growing up was definitely, definitely a part of how I ended up feeling like it was normal and safe and good and right for me to ask questions.
So your whole mission is basically these cycles mixed with the right workout and the right food and the right supplements.
And I know this is what you have a new project coming out, which basically is like this tech that analyzes this and then helps us decide what to eat, what to supplement.
Is that correct?
Yeah.
So after sort of putting together the protocol, the flow protocol that, you know, everybody knows from the first book, Woman Code, I started asking myself a question about what are we overlooking?
What are we still missing?
Why do women find themselves?
Like it's fine. It's great that we have a protocol to balance our hormones, but how do we just not
fall into that ditch in the first place? Right. What are we, what are we missing? What are we
getting fundamentally wrong? Because 80% of women at some point in her lifetime will have a hormone
problem. That's staggering. When you compare that to the male cohort, I mean, it's like
under 20%. They're not suffering from this at such a great degree. So I started asking myself,
why, what are we missing? And that's when I sort of stumbled upon the infradian biological rhythm.
Of course. Of course you just stumbled across the infradian biological rhythm. Of course you did.
You know, I am nothing if not a research nerd. And I said, oh my God, this is what we're missing
because we know how profound it is when we disrupt our circadian clock, right? We mess up major
systems of the body. People who do chronic shift work, you know, they have to struggle a little
bit more to stay healthy, it's a big deal. So here we are as women, A, we don't even know we
have this biological clock, which is active from your first bleed to your last, okay? And B, we are
unaware that we are disrupting this clock to a massive extent, which then just makes it impossible
for you to be healthy the way that you're designed to be. And this is why so many more women are
having hormonal struggles versus men, because we're all technically dealing with the same kind
of inputs, right? We're all in this environment that's full of endocrine disruptive chemicals.
We're all eating a little too much sugar. We're all not doing our workouts perfectly. This is men
and women, right? But for women, we're so much more greatly affected because we're disrupting
this infradian clock. And how we disrupt that at the most profound level is that we try to do the
same things every day while your whole hormonal system is changing four times a month, right?
So all the wisdom that you've heard in the fitness, nutrition, wellness rhetoric, which is,
okay, there's a perfect daily routine for your food and a perfect caloric intake that you should
strive to take in every day, or that you should do the same workouts every day to achieve your
desired, all of that is not applicable if you are menstruating because your hormones changing means
that you're having an infradian impact on your metabolic speed, on your cortisol levels,
on so many things. So you have to minimally synchronize how much you're eating and the
types of intensity with your workouts that you're doing to match each of the phases.
So once I understood this, I decided, well, we need a method to support this infradian rhythm, to support so that we can really get this right.
And that's when I created the cycle syncing method, which, yes, has gone totally viral on TikTok.
There's hashtag cycle syncing now has like 130 million iterations.
It's really great.
It's awesome.
And I think it's just because it's an idea whose time has come.
And it's because, you know, finally, as I always like to say, you know, the form of your self-care can actually follow the function of your biology.
And we've never been able to do that because all the research that's ever been done has been done on men or postmenopausal women because, ooh, you know, we're too complicated in our reproductive years and we just let's just leave them out.
and let's assume, I mean, this is the most unscientific reasoning you'll ever hear,
but this is what it is. They're too complicated. We don't understand enough about the cycle. Let's
leave them out of research and let's just assume that they're smaller versions of men and whatever
we find for the guys, it'll probably work for the women. God, amazing. Is that accurate? It's
insane. Does that even sound remotely accurate? But that sounds about right though. So like here
you are, you're trying to be good. You're trying to do something good for yourself. You're reading
me articles. Oh, this, and this was just three years ago. Now pit workouts are the gold standard
for, you know, fats loss, right. And intermittent fasting. This was like top news. Everyone was
talking about it. No one was talking about the fact that the studies only referenced men and
post-menopausal women. So all these women were trying it disrupting their cycle, you know,
disrupting their fertility, gaining weight, having thyroid effects. I mean, this is what happens when
we don't do proper disclosure of what is going on in the studies. Anyway, it's frustrating. We all
have the right to be frustrated, but just make sure that when you're reading something, you
click on the link to the study and just see who the cohort is. What are the three things that
like you walk around earth seeing women do that are the most disruptive one if you're not
modulating your caloric intake at the right times in your cycle which we can break this down we can
go through the cycle syncing method a little bit if you're not varying your workouts number two if
you're not very if you're doing the same kind of workout every day you will disrupt your hormones
and then three if you're not going out of your way to remove endocrine disruptive chemicals to
the extent that is maximally possible, then you're just shooting yourself in the foot, right? So
those are the three things that I would say. So let's break down each of those. Cause I think
they're really each interesting as like a way in, obviously, if you're listening, you got to get the
books, you got to get the app. I mean, there's so much we could never cover it all. There's no how
to that could happen in a 60 minute podcast, but can you break down each one of those worlds and
like kind of the things that women do. And so if they see themselves doing this, that they would
know, oh, I mean, now they're going to be like my cycle. I shouldn't be doing X. Yeah. So, so let's
look at our, let's look at our metabolic, you know, pattern just so that we understand it.
And that makes sense. Like why you would need to change your calories. So in the first half of the
cycle, follicular and ovulatory, your metabolism is slightly slower. So you can and should eat
fewer calories relative to you. So if you're typically eating a 1600 calorie diet, you know,
you're going to drop that. I mean, I don't even think people are counting calories these days,
but let's say that you are roughly, you're going to drop that down by about 250 calories. You're
going to feel better with a little bit less food during this time because you don't need as much
because of this slowdown in your metabolism. So that's the first thing. And you also want to,
this is the second piece, the second food layer piece within the cycle-syncing method. You also
want to use food strategically here, especially during that ovulation phase when you have that
super surge of estrogen. Your body has to metabolize or break down all of that estrogen.
If you don't have enough micronutrients stored in the tissue of your liver and you need a wide
variety from A to E to C to B, I mean, you need a ton, plus you need selenium glutathione,
It's hard for your liver to do that job.
So what I recommend, and this is the famous food flow chart in chapter four of In the
Flow, you're going to be using a lot of raw foods, smoothies, raw cruciferous vegetables.
You're going to be using these things strategically just to supercharge your body's ability to
break down all that estrogen.
But that's only a three to four day period of time.
This is the thing.
We all feel like we're being quote-unquote good if we're having smoothies and salads,
and we try to do that all month long.
But as you're going to see in a second, if you extend that beyond ovulation, you're really
not helping things at all.
You're actually going to create imbalance.
And so here's what happens.
Now we've finished ovulation.
We now cross over to the other side, the second half of the cycle, the secretory phase of
the cycle where the corpus luteum is secreting all these progesterone hormones.
you're building that lining of the uterus it's a very intense time it's a lot of activity that's
taking place in the reproductive organs you need a lot of nourishment and your blood and your
metabolism speeds up so that you can eat more digest more food and extract more micronutrients
to 3d print that organ you know it's like no big deal so that so your metabolism you have to eat
studies are pretty conclusive, 279 more calories per day. If you don't, guess what's going to
happen to your blood sugar? Not going to be good, not going to be stable. You're going to be
irritable and moody and you're going to binge eat. Binge eating is a symptom of not meeting
your metabolic shift in the luteal phase. If you eat enough calories, which is going to feel like
you're eating more, you don't binge eat anything during your quote unquote PMS time. You feel
good. You feel stable. Your moods are good. Your energy is good, right? But if you don't eat more
proactively and the right kinds of foods, which is the second layer I'll talk about in a sec,
then you're going to have all those stereotypical symptoms that are like the butt of a joke,
right? And you don't want to do that to yourself. So the second layer is like in the ovulation
phase, we need to kind of support that estrogen metabolism here. We really need to protect insulin
levels. Okay. And cortisol levels. We do that by selecting foods that are as slow burning as
possible. So cooked root vegetables, if we're going to do carbs or cooked grains, even, and
then also because the transit time is slower in the gut due to all that progesterone, we want to
use cooked leafy greens, as opposed to raw things. It's going to create a ton of bloating and gas.
if you don't cook them down in this phase, right?
Proteins, fats, you want to like eat aggressively
during this phase, eat like you mean it.
Start the day out with a solid breakfast.
I mean, I give lots of examples in the book,
but someone today just posted one of my favorites,
like a sweet potato toast with like some poached eggs
and avocado and greens, like eat with purpose,
eat passionately during your luteal phase
and you will feel so much better.
But if you try to do any intermittent fasting during this phase, you're going to feel worse.
It's going to exacerbate your blood sugar disruption.
It's like not the thing to do.
If you wanted to do a little bit of an extended fast in the first half of the cycle, you could.
But for women in their reproductive years, fasting beyond the golden 12 hours between
breakfast, sorry, dinner and breakfast is not really necessary.
And it's not even advantageous from a metabolic point of view.
you could just do an extended hour or two if you wanted to in the first half of your cycle.
So those are like the high level things about cycle syncing your food based on metabolic changes
and how we can really compensate for these hormonal patterns in each of the four phases.
Wow. You're the smartest.

i mean i just have the heaviest period of all time my mom had an extremely heavy period my
period is like hell on earth um and i just i don't know if it's normal or not yeah i mean
it's mostly i bleed like i don't think i think i bleed more than any person has ever bled in
their entire life during their period but like only in the two first two days and then the rest
my periods like, okay. Um, but yeah, I just have like a crazy period, but it's every 28 days on
the dot. So it's not like, do you have cramping as well? Yeah. Okay. So this is pretty straightforward
what's going on. We fix this literally every day. It's very easy. And I would love to get you on a
little protocol. So like in a month from now or two, you could be having a different reality.
It's not, it doesn't take that long. So, um, it's such a common problem that I created a
whole formulation for this particular issue, uh, called release to help women who are sort
of struggling with metabolizing their estrogen. So what's going on for you is a combination where
you have both too much estrogen unopposed by progesterone in the luteal phase, which is
causing an overdevelopment of the lining of the uterus, right? So then there's more to shed,
first of all. Second of all, you have likely not enough support to break all this estrogen down
throughout the cycle. You could also have an overabundance of the quote-unquote dirty estrogens.
So there's good ones, there's less good ones. And this can be supported best with food and
supplementation. So in the release product that I formulated, there are specific things that really
help the liver break this estrogen down every single day so that you don't get to a place where
it's now overdeveloping that lining of the uterus and causing this to be such a heavy bleed. So
that's the first thing. Then from a cramps point of view, cramps are caused specifically, unless
unless you know you have a structural issue like fibroids or endometriosis which do you have
not that i know of okay yes sometimes it's hard to know uh there's no no good testing for any of
these things like there's no test there's no test to determine if you have pcos there's no test to
determine if you have fibroids and it's kind of crazy i mean there needs to be a study anyway
that's a whole other that's a whole other situation but anyway so assuming you don't
have a known structural, let's say, issue that's causing the uterus to work hard to expel that
lining, then it's often really just coming down to the types of fats that are going in your diet.
If you eat the wrong fats, you're going to produce too much of this one prostaglandin. There are
three of them that control the uterine activity, PGE1, PGE2, and PGE3. Nature has designed your
uterine activity to be efficient and painless let me say that again you're designed to have a
painless efficient wow release of the uterine lining every month why because you have twice
as many prostaglandins that control uterine relaxation pge one and three control uterine
relaxation which i always do with this like gentle i love the hand motion it's like very
I love it.
I was like, ah, that's what it feels like.
That's what it is.
Like a flower.
Like a gentle massage, right?
That's great.
There's one prostaglandin that's like revving the gas pedal, if you will, to cause a little
bit of contraction just so that we're not totally relaxed the whole time, right?
And it's only one of them.
It's PGE number two.
If you eat seed oils, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower, or any of these seed oils,
You jack up the production of PGE2 and suppress the production of PGE1 and 3, which means during the time that the bleeding is starting, your uterus is just contracting and contracting.
It's not relaxing.
And for anybody who's ever been in labor, this is terrible, right?
In fact, this is important if you are pregnant.
You also want to omit all seed oils for a number of reasons, neurological development of the baby, your own hormonal health, but also to prepare you for labor.
You want to make yourself full of omega-3 rich fatty acids, which promote the production of PGE1 and 3 and keep at bay the production of PGE2, which means whether you're starting your bleed or you're going to go into labor, it's going to feel good and not super intense.
So what are some foods like?
Wait, hold on.
I just want to make sure.
This is blowing my mind.
No one's been able to answer this question for you, and I just answered it, and I want to make sure you understand.
yeah no I do understand but you feel excited and hopeful that this can change because I that's the
most important thing you have to feel positive oh yeah you can you this is not something and and I
also just want to flag that that belief that you have all of this happened to my mom and all her
sisters and this is very powerful hypnotism that you're doing to yourself but you're doing it and
so do so many women we all believe this toxic period narrative mythological nonsense like oh
I've inherited the worst period ever from my, all the women in my family and it's never going
to get better until I'm old enough to have a hysterectomy. I mean, it's all some flavor of
that. We're all operating under that hypnosis. Please everyone just know that that's none of
it is scientifically accurate and you can 100% manipulate your hormonal output by changing your
dietary inputs, period. There it is. Number two. I have, I have one last question about that
because um like as somebody who has gone through like disordered eating and stuff in my past and
i'm sure a lot of women you know also have yes anything with like diet and eat this not that
like that scares the shit out of me and like i'm always just like so anti it so is there a way to
implement this kind of stuff into your lifestyle without being super extremely restrictive and
getting the same, at least a positive result out of it. I'm so glad you surfaced that. We have had
so many women who've had disordered eating in the past come to us to share how the cycle-syncing
method, notice it is not a diet, first and foremost. It's a method to support this infradian
clock. It's an all-encompassing lifestyle program. I find that it has been such a healing experience
for their relationship with their bodies and food, because it is about you connecting with
what is right for me right now, as opposed to, um, following some arbitrary regime.
And fundamentally, and I talk about this in the book, in the flow, because it's just come
up so often in, in, in my work, um, the fact that we struggle so much more than men with
disordered eating, it could be argued, or at least it's worth exploring, you know, what happens when
a girl goes from a circadian only existence in childhood to then having an infradian clock that
no one's explaining to her. And she was living a reality in which it was okay to be the same
every day. And now she's got this new reality where she's supposed to change, but nobody's
telling her she's supposed to be, do different things to take care of herself. And you think
And then you're waking up at puberty also into the sort of, you know, as much as your teenage brain can comprehend that, like, oh, I'm a girl inside a patriarchal construct.
How do I survive that?
So there's this massive situation that's taking place.
And perhaps we are reacting to this stress of not knowing what our bodies are doing and sort of this whole existential moment that we're having.
And we say, okay, maybe the way for me to take care of myself and to survive is if I try to be the same every day like I used to be.
And then that sameness, we then equate sameness with, quote, unquote, perfection.
And then it's a slippery slope, you know, from there.
So I just like to surface that because it's a question mark you can start to look at for yourself.
what is the extent to which not knowing about how your cycle has worked has impacted you
emotionally and psychologically whether you have disordered eating or not even if you haven't had
that issue so many of us when we start cycle syncing feel a profound healing because we're
like oh yeah this is how my body works and it is safe for me to take care of it the way that
it's working and I don't have to do things to try to fit myself into some other system that
wasn't designed with my biology in mind. So I think it's my big answer to your question is that,
and the second part of the answer is do not use the cycle syncing method in a way to try to be
perfect. Do not. I will come for you. Do not do that. It's a method. If you even did it 30% of
the time, you would be benefited, but you're going to do the food and the fitness piece.
you're going to dial that in over months. You're going to become more comfortable with it. It's
going to become easier. You're going to use the app. It's going to be something that you don't
have to become a subject matter expert in. You can kind of just be guided through the process.
And then all the other stuff with the, you know, work and all the other fun things you can play
with around your brain changes. That's like gravy. That's fun, you know? But yeah, this is not like
anything else that you've been presented with in terms of, okay, here's the exact thing you have
to do every day. No meal plans. No, I think the app is actually quite the opposite. Like I think
it's given me this relationship that's less rigid with food because it's, you wake up in the morning,
you check the app and you're like, where am I at in my cycle right now? What is it suggesting that
I do a gentle yoga class? Amazing. It's like, you don't have to think. Cause I also have those days
where I'm like, what am I going to eat today? I want to take care of myself. I want to feel good.
I don't know what that's going to be. And then if I go on and I see that a smoothie is actually
going to serve me and my body the best, then I go and I seek that out. But then it's like,
it's these beautiful suggestions where you do feel like you're just sort of taking care of
yourself versus just following this really rigid, uh, you know, seven scoops of a cucumber.
Here's my wish, uh, Jack, because I love your vulnerability in this moment. Um,
because i know that's hard for you my wish is jack's getting married in france in september
so we have like three months about 140 days or whatever and like my wish for you is that you can
go into the month of your wedding with a 30 improvement on your heavy ass cycle so that
you can enjoy you're wearing your white you know what i mean like throughout the whole thing because
We have events planned and pre-events and, you know, and it's just like, I know we've
been through this with her for seven years.
Like it is, it's really life-stopping.
Like it's that bad.
And so my wish for you is that like, we can support you.
And, and this has been like a changing moment.
And then by the time we get to France, you're like, wow, I can't believe like, it's not
perfect.
Obviously you can't change your whole life in three months, but it sounds like Elisa
is saying you could be better.
You could feel better by the time you're getting married, which would be great.
And just for a fun fact, I got married on day two of my bleed purposefully because I was like,
I was like queuing up. I was like, okay, great. This is like a great time. Well, I know also,
I really wanted to be so present during my wedding and during your bleed, the two hemispheres of your
brain are communicating the most across this bundle of nerve fibers in your brain called
the corpus callosum. So I was like, okay, I I've heard from every bride that they just feel like
the day just flies by and like, it's almost out of their body. I was like, okay, what's the time
I'm going to be the most in my body in the cycle, obviously my bleeding phase. And I'm going to be
able to be able to sort the facts of what's happening and the feelings. Cause that's what
this cross communication empowers you to do during your bleeding phase the most. So let me schedule
it on day two. And then we can wait like after the wedding, like four days. And then let's hit
my honeymoon during ovulation for all the sexy time. Like that's, that was my game plan. It
worked out so well. And it was really fun. My best friend who was my maid of honor, I was like,
all right, you know, I got to go in and change my tampon. So I was like, you're going to hoist
up this giant dress. I'm going to do it. One tampon change for the day. It was great. It was
so fabulous. Wow. How do people find you, Elisa? Because I know there's women out there. Obviously
your, your app is my flow. Not it's the purple one. It's the purple one with a circle that's
broken into four sections, obviously for parts of your cycle and both of her books in the flow
and women code. I know you're going to the Amazon story or whatever bookseller you go to and getting
them right now. We're so excited about that. And then all of your, all of your flow living
is your website, which has supplements, cycle syncing, the whole thing. I mean, if you,
if you're having any hormone issue, you should come in. What's really exciting is that we are
launching a whole new platform for in celebration of our 10 year anniversary. I can't believe we've
been taking care of women's hormones for 10 years. We're like the OG femtech company.
And what this new platform is going to allow you to do is come in, use this very specialized evaluation, tell us what your symptoms are, either through the new app that's released or on the website.
And whatever your symptoms are, whatever you're dealing with, we're going to be able to, through the platform, customize a personal plan just for you and what you're dealing with, with the supplements, with food, all based on your cycle phases.
So it's really exciting.
It's the first of its kind.
We're so, so excited to be able to create that for everybody.
So, yeah, definitely check it out.
