Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, it's your Lady Gang, Jack Vanek, Kelty Knight, and Becca Tobin. Thank you so much for subscribing on iTunes, and thanks for supporting the great sponsors who make it possible for us to have this much fun with you every single week for free. Well, what is this? Welcome to the Lady Gang. That's amazing. Say that again. The Lady Gang.
Starting point is 00:00:20 Things are about to change around here. Each week, we catch up with Hollywood's hottest girl posse, Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to The Lady Gang. I am Becca Tobin, actress and blogger. Across from me is Kelty Knight, entertainment journalist. And to my right, Jack Vanek, CEO, founder, clothing designer of Jack Vanek Clothing. Cool intro, Becca.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Cool. Thank you. Very to the point. I've really been working on it. It's concise. I wonder if it bothers everybody that the hello, hello, hello is the same since the beginning. Or should we do like... No, people love it.
Starting point is 00:00:59 yeah i think it's hola nope speaking of languages what languages did you take in high school and what do you remember from them je parle de petite the francais that's pretty good uh i took four four years of american sign language oh sign is something i can only spell that's it yeah in four years all you learned was spelling i don't remember anything oh yeah and i know like a couple dirty words but that's it interesting I took both and I don't know anything sign and no French and Spanish I said both like an idiot both languages I'm like I think there's more languages because I'm saying both because when I was in high school there were only two offerings right which is I took mine in a community
Starting point is 00:01:44 college because I was smart is that because you really didn't go to real school you just went to like random classes I went to some random classes at community college because they had cool classes like sign language that seems so ambitious it's so jack to go to a community college i know you know um great uh so it's time for good week yes it is bad week oh no who wants to start sorry wait i have to start because we need to talk about this yeah kelty so oh god last week we were at meeting and we're well we're going into a meeting all three of us and we walk past this group of guys oh god this is embarrassing they walk past us and kelty stopped in her tracks she turned a 180 around was staring at these guys with her jaw on the floor and she's like oh my god who is that
Starting point is 00:02:40 is that writer strong from boy meets world freaking out i've never seen like so loud that He and his whole entourage heard it. I used to love Ryder Strong. I've never seen somebody so starstruck by anybody. It wasn't even Ryder Strong. It wasn't even Ryder Strong. It was who? It was the Lawrence brothers.
Starting point is 00:03:01 One of the Lawrence brothers. The young Lawrence nobody cares about with a ponytail. I was wrong. My eyes are bad. You freaked out. Who, by the way, looks nothing like Ryder Strong. I know, but the ponytail threw me off. I don't even know who Ryder Strong is.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Yes, you do. He was the hot one with the long hair on Boy Meets World. Thank you. He was Shane or Sean or something. Yeah, he was kind of like white trashy. Yeah, he was, but he's hot. He was like really dumb but hot. It was like that 90s guy, like Joey.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Yeah, like everyone loved him. Everyone loved a dumb guy. Yeah. That's great. Everybody, I still love a dumb guy. Okay, so that, I guess, is my... Your good week? That was your good week?
Starting point is 00:03:36 We saw Celebrity Sighting with Kelty Knight. No, it's your reaction was the good week. Yeah, I just had to talk about it. It was fantastic. i'm gonna throw it in the good week spot thank you honored my bad week so because i drive a jeep i'm always like taller than everybody else and people can't really notice that i can see into their cars so the other day i was driving down the street and this really hot guy drove up next to me like a beamer whatever sedan kind of thing and you know i was like looking at him like oh this
Starting point is 00:04:08 guy's super freaking hot and then he goes and sticks his finger so far into his nose pulls out the longest booger booger that i've ever seen booger and sticks it in his mouth no you're kidding me mouth is a kicker he didn't flick it out the window he ate it i'm gonna throw up it's so gross i'm gonna throw up and he was like a handsome man like handsome i have a question what percentage of people do you think eat their boogers i bet it's higher than you think i think it's harder because i think it's a it's a thing people do is it yeah i think so oh my god it's just i'm really horrified if i found out that zach ate his boogers in private like you mean that means you're eating the boogers well regardless like the deeper issue is like i'm
Starting point is 00:05:00 going to be really upset i think i'd rather find out he's cheating on me than that he eats his boogers in private yeah i think it's a deal breaker oh my god that's so gross kelty um i just want to bad week in general it's a very generalized bad week but i was hit by some of it on an airplane this week i cannot stand loud earphone listeners if you have your earphones in and i can still hear every word to the song or your game of thrones or whatever you're watching you a either need a new headphone or to turn it the f down it drives me you in a headphone masking that sound i know get some noise cancelers or ear or earplugs i first of all i had earplugs in and you could still hear it so loud and sometimes it's like when you're on the subway
Starting point is 00:05:48 or you're yes it was so loud but you're like on the subway or you're like you know sitting next to someone or whatever and it's just like obnoxiously loud in places that should be quiet why can't people turn down their headphones just a little bit maybe it's time for me to read on the plane and i don't want to have to listen to your movie while i'm that's rude they may be hard of hearing anyway i just wish you a good week um okay well i have some big news i have landed my dream job tell us everything everyone it's official i can't tell you yes it's official i'm not going to say what it is because you're going to see that on my instagram but i do want to just lightly say that for many years i really wanted to be on this show and i was kind of always
Starting point is 00:06:36 in the background and every year my agent would ask and be like can she come over and they'd be like no she's not good enough or no she's not ready and I worked my ass off this year and I really made some real changes to the like way I dress to the way I like believed in myself the way that I talk to people of power and like the way the way that you are styling your eyebrows my eyebrows are styled better um and I really like sort of spent the whole year as one big audition for this dream job like every single day and then I went to them with like this whole plan of like all the things i would bring to the show and ideas i had for different things and um it worked out in my dreamiest way and i'm so happy and proud and also i negotiated like a boss yes i really thought
Starting point is 00:07:24 about you thank you because old kelty would have been like the first thing they offered me i would have been like yes no problem i'll do anything what and i'll give you my first five children like and then i really sat back and i was like you know what i'm good at what i do i work so hard i bring so much to the table that i deserve to like go back and negotiate this until it really works for me and i did and like i have not one complaint i'm so happy yay hell yeah so girls always go back what did becca tobin say to me like when i first started doing this she was like girl there's always more money there's always more money always no and i feel like people that are above you appreciate that that you actually like have value to yourself and you're not just like
Starting point is 00:08:06 Oh, yeah, okay, okay, totally. Because really – And you'll screw yourself over. And also, like, in this, like, women's situation we're in with, like, equal pay and all that stuff, like, it's a disservice to other women if you're doing a job for less money and you deserve more. Yeah. Like, you're then setting a precedent that every woman should be accepting this mediocrity. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I was really proud of myself. So good for you. Thank you. Yay. I was really proud of getting the job, and then I'm really proud that I get to, like, walk into it knowing that, you know, I got a great deal. and, like, that they saw the value that I was trying to present. That's awesome. Good.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Yay me. But don't listen to your iPhones loud when I'm on the plane this year, okay, bitches? Do you have to travel as much? Yeah. But word on the street is that we're going to be taping the show around 2.30, 3.30 p.m. Oh. So I will not be getting up as early. So I will have nothing to – I have nothing –
Starting point is 00:08:57 Except Hashimoto's. You'll still be able to complain about that. Yeah. You need to find – I'm eating. Oh, my God. She's, like, fully having a salad. piece of like a pound of corn in her mouth no i don't know who i am without my wake-ups so i'm gonna see what it's like yeah you need something else to complain about i'll probably still wake
Starting point is 00:09:14 up at 5 a.m and start texting you guys about lady gang stuff no thank you that's a treat unsubscribe unsubscribe silence do not disturb um so my my good week bad week is like so lame compared to that um my good week is that i saw my favorite comedian live who ali wong she is the funniest bitch on the planet i fell in love with her when her netflix special baby cobra aired um last year and she was pregnant she's like this little teeny teeny tiny tiny asian girl and um she was pregnant for the first stand-up special and she was hilarious and then she's had her baby since and now she's touring again and it was amazing. Was she funny?
Starting point is 00:09:58 I didn't stop laughing. I feel like sometimes you'll see stand-up and you're like, oh, there's funny parts and you can name the parts you laugh. My stomach hurt. Oh, I love that. I'm going to check it out. She has a special on Netflix. Baby Cobra. We need to get her on. Seriously, I want her on so badly.
Starting point is 00:10:14 I met her after and she seemed very sweet. That was my good week. I'm putting in my to-do list to text you tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. For what? To get Allie long i can't get her well how do we get her i don't know how do you get everybody else that's your job i'm not friends with her i mean i met her you didn't like slip i wasn't like come on the lady gang like i'm not very good that's what i do i know i also want busy phillips on okay i'll
Starting point is 00:10:38 add it to the list thank you so much i love her um my bad week is this i have like this this cough from hell we hear it um well here's why i think i have it it's a theory but i'm pretty sure it's real um zach and i came up with this genius plan to sleep with the fan in our room because like the noise is nice and it's just like we always get so hot no matter how low we turn our air conditioning on so he's like oh i have that fan downstairs i'll go grab it and he brings it in the room and he turns it on it's like this mega fan and it's like awesome it's great we have the best night's sleep i wake up the next morning and i can't breathe i'm coughing up a storm and i'm sneezing and i look at the fan it's on high he had used it to paint the inside of our garage
Starting point is 00:11:27 to like dry it in like while he you know there's paint particles you have like lead poisoning like i think i'm dying oh shit there's paint particles inside of this fan and so i'm like first of all biggest husband fail ever yeah come on zach zach you of all people like the handiest person who knows about everything in the world like you're gonna bring i am ready to kill his wife he's gonna kill me is he trying do you think oh my god yeah it's like it's too early it's like a nip tuck when that girl like kept putting like poisoning in the cake and and i don't remember but it was something like that it's terrible so i'm dying it's my husband well maybe when i die he shouldn't get my money because he did it so does that come on the lady gang once you're dead
Starting point is 00:12:13 no i have a specific prenup saying you don't own part of the lady gang did we have a winner just kidding oh yeah we did have a winner this week okay let's do those the winner of the bad week for this week is laura and she says she had a man look at her in the hall at work and say i would ring that rag out what what rag i don't understand i think that's sexual harassment like i would bring that rag out like a period like a but that sounds like a rag like on the rag like period no i think he means like a wet rag i don't know what it means either but it sounds bad sorry bad week um and then our good week winner is casey ann and it is my legs had one day of looking amazing in leather
Starting point is 00:13:00 leggings, and I rocked them hard. How do you have one day of looking amazing in leather leggings? I'm proud of you. I really am. But I'm not sure how you can only have one
Starting point is 00:13:16 amazing leg day in your whole life. Maybe wash them and do another day. While wearing leather leggings. I don't think you can wash leather leggings, but anyway. Starting point is 00:14:27 new place called instagram she is the founder of something social the social media agency that is comprised of a group of individuals whose collective desire to put their talents creativity and innate abilities to work isn't just a daydream it's a mission they help major brands and celebrities slay their socials and build their brand she's here to help all of us today but mostly me learn how to be better at instagram and also help all of you becca and jack don't need any help please welcome she helps me callie kolodanko is am i saying it wrong sorry i should ask you that before you start anyway we're friends so hey callie what's up how's it going welcome thank you okay we're so happy you're here so first of all tell us a little
Starting point is 00:15:06 bit about something social and how you started and how you even get to be like a social media expert well let's just can i say preface this with the fact that she's 26 years old yeah and you and you're annoying. It's annoying. It's amazing. Thank you. Thank you. So happy to be here. Really, I got started because I had all these internships and all these different things throughout college and nothing stuck. And then after college, a friend of a friend was hiring in social. And at the time, I was like, what do you mean social media? And on my first day, they were like, go take photos of this smoothie and croissant and, you know, send them to us. And I was like, this is awesome. So that's kind of how it started. And then honestly,
Starting point is 00:15:42 I just realized that everything that I enjoy doing from creativity and photography to brand development and marketing and brand voice and communication, and they all just kind of like magically converged with social media. And it was somewhere that I could kind of play with different industries from fashion and fitness and health and wellness and beauty and all these things. So I started my first job out of college was out of, you know, social media agency, which kind of wasn't a thing at the time. Um, and then about six months later, a company asked me to help consult for them, which turned
Starting point is 00:16:16 into a job offer, which turned into a, why don't I just start my own company and you guys will be my first client. And then through word of mouth and referrals and everyone and their moms needing help with social media and Instagram, it just grew from there. What do we do when we feel sad about our Instagram? I'm just kidding. Oh my God. No.
Starting point is 00:16:32 Okay. You hire me. First of all, what is your top three Instagram tips to sticking? These are all questions that came from a Facebook group, by the way. Great. needs to know. How the F do I stick to an Instagram theme and what theme should I choose? Okay. So when it comes to theme, the biggest thing kind of across the board with social is keep it consistent and authentic. And I know those two things can seem kind of vague,
Starting point is 00:16:57 but at the end of the day, everyone's doing something different and not everything's going to work. It's not like a one size fits all. And we see different looks and aesthetics and edits and this and that and themes across so many different accounts that it's kind of like you choose one thing that you like and as long as you're always looking through the lens of what's authentic and consistent for me it's always gonna match but sometimes when you're me and you're like i want to post a picture of my niece now i want to picture a post a picture of my fashion no i want to pick so like how do you never posted a group photo yeah how do you edit out your life from like what you want to share with people to what should be shared on social so instagram stories actually
Starting point is 00:17:36 has changed that for a lot of people because you can kind of use each platform kind of has its own thing. And I think the great thing about Instagram and Instagram stories now is you can kind of keep your feed pretty and aesthetically pleasing and sharing like the things that, you know, kind of fit your fit your whole aesthetic. And then you can use the story for more of that live messy in the moment content. And I think that's really why they ended up introducing that feature is because people were starting to have this toggle between real life and aesthetically pleasing life um and it can be they're not the same they're not the same and it can be hard to try to force everything in there um and i know this is you know happened to me where there's things that i want to share
Starting point is 00:18:15 but they literally don't fit my feed and you have to make those decisions um so i think it's also just always looking through the lens of like who am i what am i trying to put out there and then and then sometimes you do have to edit out some of those little moments post on facebook but also you taught me that sometimes if it's like a photo that's not necessarily like in line with your brand if you edit it visually as beautifully as the other things in your feed you can cheat this is true i love a good visco filter for this yes um what's your fave well c1 um same that i mean that's lady gang's fave um my personal fave is i love a good e3 or a good hb1 for all you idiots yeah tell all you dummies like me when i hired callie i was like i don't know about this
Starting point is 00:19:09 i don't want to know about this do it i don't care about that i mean i care but i don't care enough to educate myself and that's why i'm coming to a genius like you she was like so i use these things called visco and snap seed yeah and then sound like it's apps that you can do on your phone they're free they're free and you basically filter your photos with it it's not like the old school like what filter do you like on instagram well it is but it's it's the next level do you like edit your levels on snap seed and do the filter on visco cam yes okay so here's take us through like a photo? So my process is typically for the photo, I use two apps like Becca mentioned, Snapseed and VSCO Cam, which is V-S-C-O. And it's kind of your way. Yes, in a perfect world,
Starting point is 00:19:56 lighting in the world is always going to be perfect and you're always going to have a camera and that's just not realistic. And so when you can't always be shooting with these high res photos and whatnot, editing apps are a great way of just blending it all together and making it look consistent and aesthetically pleasing. And so I typically do Snapseed first and I use it to adjust like the contrast and the saturation and the details in the photo. And you can use a little select tool and like change a little the best thing. So if like the sky is too blue, but you don't want to adjust the rest of the photo, you can like just edit the sky. You can do it on somebody's face like if your face is dark your face yes it's magical shadows or whatever so i
Starting point is 00:20:41 do that to kind of touch up the whole photo and then i put it into visco cam which has filters kind of like your instagram filters but like on steroids and if you pick one for the most part you can usually stick to that and then everything will seem like consistent and just flowing aesthetically pleasing now what so sometimes people do the cork board where it's like a close up a far away a close up a far away what do you think about that like the checkerboard thing is that real i what do you mean because like okay so if you look at jack's instagram it's always like picture of jack picture of jack vanek product picture of but i don't have it in any sort of order you know i just do that so it doesn't look like i have like three pictures so it doesn't
Starting point is 00:21:26 of like unbalanced i guess yeah mine's more random but some people do it they'll do like a meme and then a picture of a sunset and then a product or like so yes we call these our editorial calendars and we'll plan out like on monday we do this then on tuesday we do this but to make it way way way easier there are two apps that we use one is called planally and one is called unum u-n-u-m and they're basically a feed planning app and i think there's a couple other ones um and so you can put all your photos into that before you post them and see like what the flow is going to look like and that way you can make sure that you're not putting like a black and white on top of a black and white or like two photos that are too similar next to each other and if you just
Starting point is 00:22:07 kind of spread them out it usually will also lend to like a nicer flow of your feed when is the right time to post on facebook instagram and twitter so there used to be great posting twitter still exists for news people okay jack and then the algorithms came in and just messed everything up so with twitter algorithms freaking algorithms so with twitter i always think like when am i on my phone right before a meeting right before a lunch so if you do like 10 20 or 10 50 like 10 minutes before the hour that's usually your best time on twitter because it's right before when people are like going into a waiting room dang damn expert in the morning when you wake up because i always check my phone in the morning or in the morning but the thing is so instagram's no longer
Starting point is 00:22:55 chronological so with the algorithm what do you mean so what used to happen no okay becca needs a lesson it's so annoying no i don't i just pay you so when when you post on instagram it used to like if it's 10 o'clock and somebody posted at 9 30 and you go on at 10 like the last photo that was posted was right there and it is no longer it's all mishmash now and so instagram weights content differently especially for brands if you're a business page it like pushes all your content to the bottom and that's why people always complain that like not as many people are seeing my photo or my engagement's a lot lower than it used to be it's like screwed up brands engagement oh yeah or anybody i feel like it also is like people with a lot of followers
Starting point is 00:23:37 that like you get way less engagement than you yeah because less people are seeing your content and a lot of people that have so many followers are also have probably switched to a business profile so that they can have like the contact and the insights and all of that, which helps you see your audience. But if you're a regular person like me, should I switch back? Is yours a business? I switched over because I wanted the contact, but maybe I should switch back to you. Or if you're a business, should you switch over to not be a business? No, it's good because you can see the insights and that's honestly more valuable. So what insights
Starting point is 00:24:06 are is it shows you like when your audience is most active, what's performing the best, the demographics of your audience, which I actually think is super important because if you're uh let's say hot girl influencer but your whole entire audience is men versus like you're the people that are actually going to be buying your products you need to know that and so do the brands that you're working with um but what instagram actually favors now is engagement and community management and so as a brand the way to kind of hack your way out of not having to pay for people to see it is to be super super super engaged with your audience because the more you're responding to comments and commenting on photos and liking other people's photos and like
Starting point is 00:24:43 getting in the mix, the more people are actually going to be able to see your content and then it's going to continue to grow organically. Okay. Next, what's the best way to use social media to get traffic to other sites? Honestly, promoting, kind of cross-promoting. And so if you have like, I don't want to say clickbait because that can get a little cheesy, but if you have like some really cool blog posts or website or like amazing thing elsewhere in the world doing like a little bit of a teaser maybe not finishing the sentence or telling people everything but saying like hey if you go over you're gonna see the one thing that like we can't live without and then people are like what's that and then they click on it and they can go over to
Starting point is 00:25:24 your website or your blog or your other social channels it's like you won't believe what happens next i hate those links i always click on them i'm the worst like a boy went to school with pants on you won't believe what everybody thought and then it's the stupidest thing ever there's a website called Bored Panda that is like the clickiest bait of all time on my Facebook page and I will literally look at anything
Starting point is 00:25:48 they're like there was a baby panda you'll never believe what happened I'm like oh my god what happened it's just eating lunch I want to know how to spot this is not me this is one of our Lady Gang members she wants to know how to spot the not so obvious social media
Starting point is 00:26:04 advertising and how people manipulate their post to make it seem like it's real and not an ad well lucky for you lady gang member they are getting a little bit more cracked down about this whole thing um right now just for anyone who doesn't know legally if you're being paid or even gifted by a brand which a lot of people don't know they think it's only paid you are supposed to put hashtag ad on your posts but a lot of people get like fancy with it and they'll do either hashtag sp which is for sponsored or they'll put like Or Smashing Pumpkins. Or that.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Love it. I wonder if that helped them at all. No. Or Simple Plan. Canadian. All right. Or you can do, people will put the brand, hashtag brand partner. So those are two definite giveaways.
Starting point is 00:26:51 And then also sometimes you just have to look in the layered. And if at the way, way, way, way, way end of a long paragraph they put hashtag ad, obviously that's that. it can be a little hard because sometimes people will post and they genuinely just like something and they want to push it and now everyone thinks that everything is sponsored why would it be illegal though like why do you have to put ad because it's it's misleading to an audience if you don't actually like or endorse the product and you're getting paid to do so then it's skewing your perception or your opinion of it okay people want to know what's the next up-and-coming social
Starting point is 00:27:24 media app they should know about so they can be ahead of the game why does everyone hate literal captions because they're not funny what like here i am on the beach yeah because it's awful it's boring no people love a like skipping into work like oh people see looking back at the weekend like i get so crazy because we see them and get sick of them before like the majority of the population has seen those types of things so like my one of my biggest is a cotton candy sky nope what i'm done cotton candy skies absolutely not is that like a sunset or something yes and the other one is like a ripped jeans and coffee type of day type of day i don't like a type of day oh or like a shit i have to tell you something like literally three weeks ago i did
Starting point is 00:28:13 it's a red pantsuit kind of day but it really was you know what i wore a red pantsuit because of like yeah you know what i do for living like hillary clinton in that moment you know like a pantsuit type of day i hate it i'll let it go a power suit type of day but like a ripped jeans and a coffee well it's just so generic types of day times a day don't really i mean like figuratively kill yourself okay um wait what are the next apps because here's the thing if i did an early adopter of instagram i could be so famous right now this is true there's there's a reason you'd also have terrible you'd also have terrible engagement so why because everybody that had instagram in the beginning has like shit engagement why because there's because they
Starting point is 00:28:56 kind of there's we call the power middle um kind of like the middle audience size i know it's like in a threesome the one in the middle right exactly and they actually get the most engagement or action if you will in a threesome so this power middle is the group that has maybe 20 000 to like 200 000 and their engagement is sometimes the best not always interesting unless you're becca and you have more than that um okay uh how do you this is the best question and really something i'm dying about how do you promote yourself in a fun but professional way you can't yeah i know you kind of just have to no shame be your own hype man a little bit healthy i am my own hype Yeah, you do. You have to just be your own hype man and put it out there. And at the end of the
Starting point is 00:29:44 day, if you have a service or a product or something interesting to say or something to give to the world, in a way, you're kind of taking away other people's opportunity of engaging with you and getting to know you. And you're almost doing your audience a disservice by not sharing it with them. So I kind of always think about that. If I'm in my head or people ask all the time, but I don't want to self-promote myself. It's like, well, if you believe in what you're doing put it out there and other people are probably going to believe in it too nobody else is promoting you so there'll be a lot of haters too oh yeah but that's okay yeah becca tells me all the time that everybody hates me i do yeah i remember who never mind uh my office loves you
Starting point is 00:30:24 i don't know if this podcast is already is going to air before or after the one that we did last week yeah it's going way after do you know you remember what i'm talking about we can take that out i don't remember okay pause never mind um okay what's the deal you already started talking about this callie but is there a way to beat the instagram algorithm community management which is engaging with your followers is the best way to do it so you know there's like that little heart feature responding to people's comments getting out there and liking other people's photos and commenting and being active not like trolling but being active with people that are your relevant audience is really the only way of kind of hacking the whole algorithm and system does this work
Starting point is 00:31:04 for like somebody with becca's account that has like almost 700 000 followers or is it more 705 000 thanks cool um or does it work better because obviously you'll see that that the results from that if you have a smaller account because you know you can tell if like you're getting like a couple followers but does that also pay off for like huge accounts yeah i think the rules in general kind of stay similar it just is at a scale so when you have like the ratio of followers to your engagement. Your engagement ratio is always going to be higher when you have a smaller amount of followers because more people are engaged and active and the chances of having fake accounts or fake followers is a little bit lower. So the higher you get, yes, there's going to be a little
Starting point is 00:31:45 bit of a drop off, but it's still the best way to continue to grow with people that kind of care about what you're talking about. How do you get a ton of followers without buying them from those accounts that always like and comment on my pictures? Oh, yeah. Engagement. I know I keep saying i sound like a broken record but really engaging with a relevant audience so for example let's say you are a fashion brand of some sort you can think of all of the other types of brands that your girl would either shop at or eat or go or wear or anything like that and then going to those accounts and not engaging with the other brands but the followers of the other brands because you know that they're gonna have the same audience i've seen this happen people poaching on
Starting point is 00:32:27 yeah i used to do it i do it but i have to say like you'll go on like a photo on like somebody i'll go on lady gang's instagram and like comment back but lady gang is you it's not like you're poaching from like yes some other celebrity for like a second before i realized how much work went into it and i got over it but i would look at other yeah other brands like mine but i found it to be really good to do it to smaller brands because their followers are more engaged rather than going to like mega urban outfitters and going through their followers because they probably have a shit ton of fake followers and people that aren't relevant to my demographic but it's like the smaller kind of kitschy brands that would make sense for like my coaching yeah yes i mean
Starting point is 00:33:12 maybe do it with brands that aren't like your direct competitors so that it's not you know so but you'll also or that nobody's gonna know you'll also see that's why so many people use like apps because it gets very time consuming and so a lot of the times like all those like fake comments that are like love your gallery awesome feed oh yeah those are apps that people have enlisted to do that they become automation tools but to do that engagement for them in like a automated robotic way but you can usually tell and it's very inauthentic so i wouldn't recommend using them i thought most of those got shut down the big ones did but there are so many of them that i think they'll just keep popping up interesting wow
Starting point is 00:33:54 how can a c looks defeated like no i'll say this so when i post a picture of my husband and i i'll get like 2500 likes and i'm feeling good about myself and lots of comments and then i'll post a picture of me in like a pretty dress and i'll get like 1500 likes and it's so disappointing i don't want to only pick post pictures of listen to your audience people love to see him yeah make get a joint account you know people love a good couple's photo they do they do i bet zach does well zach uses me for his instagram he'll be like we should take a picture together right now and i'm like you just want a photo that'll get a lot of likes no you can't use me yeah but sure yeah it's the one thing that sucks about being single can't get a couple's photo anymore
Starting point is 00:34:38 yeah but then you can post like a bathing suit photo or like something else sassy and you know photos get a lot of likes so it's good it's true um okay how can small businesses use social media to attract new followers and have it translate into goods sold well i always say social is really the quickest fastest most direct authentic way to reach your audience you're controlling the narrative you're controlling the story you're the one that's putting out everything that makes your brand new into the world and it's really like the most intimate relationship you can have with your audience outside of kind of an in-person one. So with small brands, again, I would go back to keeping it consistent and authentic and then using these engagement tools and going, not tools, but
Starting point is 00:35:25 the ones I've mentioned and going in and really finding other brands, other people where your audience is hanging and where they're eating and engaging with them and commenting and kind of joining in in the conversation and creating like really authentic relationships with your followers And then influencers are honestly also a great way to do it. I think that as a small brand, finding the right influencers to work with who can message out your brand in an, again, authentic way. It's not about the number. Don't look at the number of their followers.
Starting point is 00:35:56 Look at how people are responding to them. Ask them for like when you're going to work with an influencer, we always say like ask them for their demographics, ask them for their insights, ask them for their analytics so that you can see if it's a match and then figure out creative ways to work with people and that should start to drive your brand awareness and ultimately your sales hire us i don't know i've never seen kelsey why are you so defeated i know you don't have a brand no i know i'll say this like as a regular person no no no here's the thing as a as a regular person who like you're not but continue i'm not regular but you know what i mean okay so here's here's
Starting point is 00:36:36 where I'm at in my professional life all of these people executives whatever they are above the fray of understanding fake followers engagement like all those things they just look at a number and they go oh my god she's a million followers we have to you know and here I am trying to be like the good person not buying them and just like being a normal person and then it's like I can't compete with the other people but I'm trying so hard and I feel like I'm very authentic and I'm very real and i write back to everyone and i just feel like it's so disappointing that's all buy yourself some followers you'll feel better i i really do feel for you and i think that's not something like that's something that we hear often i'm above the age of frustrating yeah and i think
Starting point is 00:37:24 that all i can say is that for the people that are building everything off of bot and fake followers, people can tell. They might not think that other people are noticing or talking about it or seeing it. We can tell when you have the same comment 20 times on a photo. But I don't think the executives of the world can tell. I would agree. I would agree. But what I do think starts to happen, and it sucks because they kind of ruin it for everyone. I think that the executives of the world are going to choose to either pay or engage or hire or work with whatever those types of people and then there's no return there's crickets after they do something or post something and it doesn't convert and i know for our brands when we've when some of our clients
Starting point is 00:38:07 have paid people to post or done something if there's zero return they're upset and they share that with the people that they work with and so it is one of those things where you have to stay like stay the course keep doing you keep doing you keep doing you and i truly believe eventually it will all kind of come out and fall apart but do you think for my birthday i should like invest five thousand dollars no just saying i don't know how much uh like three thousand no like a thousand dollars like and i should go around and pay some influences to just be like please go follow my friend kelty you're gonna have to pay them a lot more money than that kelty my rate is way more than that and we work with you um but i think that like even now executives
Starting point is 00:38:50 are getting they might not be getting smart but the people working for them are getting smart and they're like just because you put a kardashian on television does not mean instant success like you they're seeing that like all these people even if it's people with real followers not even bought like it doesn't translate just because someone's gonna look at you on instagram does not mean they're gonna want to watch you on their television like it's a totally different audience and i think that it's very quickly becoming something that everybody's figuring out so they're going to see like you're this authentic person and people are excited about you even if it's a small group of people it means that you've like captured even relatively small you know what
Starting point is 00:39:28 i mean i i've been told that it's they're starting to figure out even brands like i've lost out on deals to girls with a fraction of the following that i have because they just they can sell a product and their engagement is insane so it's like more followers doesn't always mean you're gonna get more like i understand what you're saying though because it's like you've talked about like not getting jobs to people with a larger amount of followers you're like well just if i at least just had like 60 000 followers that'll look at me differently i think it will but i understand that it's not really so much like somebody pay me blah blah blah money to post about this it's like dude if the executive saw i had a hundred thousand followers i'd be like way more
Starting point is 00:40:10 of a shoe in then yeah if i i do think people are getting savvier and smarter with it and more and more and more research and studies are consistently coming out with looking at engagement rates and looking at audience demographics versus just paying attention to the numbers and i think the more savvy that like the longer the industry is around the more savvy people will get with it it's so crazy that this is like an industry it's insane it's so important it's like and honestly it's not even just for us because we're in show business I'm talking to, like, you in Alabama and Philadelphia and wherever else you are in the world. Like, when you go to apply for your job, when we have interns that come in, the first thing we look is their Instagram page.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Like, you have to be so careful about what you're posting because it really is forever. Thank God social media wasn't around when I was in my early 20s and I was, like, in a bikini at the nightclub. It was when I was younger. You know what I mean? Google Jack Bannock. So here, how do you have a great feed and like have a fun life and like have your boozy brunches without like scaring off future employers and future mother-in-laws? Keep it classy.
Starting point is 00:41:15 I think you can show your life and show that you're having fun and show that you're out of Vegas day party, Jack. Which she just attended. It was my first. It was amazing. It was amazing? Well, I saw Kygo. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:30 Sorry to interrupt. I just was floored. i mean we look at that first too when anyone applies to work for our company obviously we're in social media we have to look at that but it is the first thing that we check and there's a very big difference like if i see a glass of wine in a photo fine like enjoy your life but if i'm seeing like you know tongues out sloppy on the floor like i might question it i think everybody just needs to remember that the internet's forever forever what picture you're posting sometimes it gets me so annoyed though the girls that are just like in a thong bikini in every picture and
Starting point is 00:41:58 they have so many followers but all their followers are men men and what types of jobs are are you know you're not going to be able to sell relevant products to yourself okay well on that note ask the lady gang is coming up soon um but before we do please follow something social on social and callie just at callie oh god i hate you you at becca and at callie and then jack and at kelty i just thought kelty's head and at the lady gang i know please don't leave me alone with the tube the full name all right bye bad day hey ladies funky ask the lady gang okay and we're back we're back before we start ask the lady gang if you want 20 off of jackvanek.com use code lady gang or my new code ladies first
Starting point is 00:42:51 for 30% off and get yourself something sassy. And Callie likes it, so that means it's great. And you know what we're doing now. You're helping us. Stop taking selfies. Take as many as you want. It's time for advice. Alright, you know the drill.
Starting point is 00:43:09 Okay. Our first question comes from Lauren. I downloaded Snapseed. I just want everyone to know it took me this long. I feel like I've told you about it before, haven't I? I'll give you a lesson. She's the bomb. Okay. Our first question comes from Lauren, and Lauren says,
Starting point is 00:43:24 I'm currently in my longest relationship of 10 months, which at least doubles all of my past relationships and longevity. However, after close to a year of dating, I still feel no kind of intimate feelings for him, causing problems between us. I have not said I love you, even though he has, and I avoid talks about feelings, which makes him think I'm no longer interested. But obviously I am because I've kept him around much longer than anyone else before. He's still patient and willing to wait as long as it takes, but it does hurt him that I still can't feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:43:54 Will I ever develop those types of feelings for him if I haven't by now, or is this a good sign that we should break up? Lauren. Lauren. No intimate feelings after 10 months? I don't think he, I don't know he's the one. He's not the one. I don't think so. And also, why is he still in it?
Starting point is 00:44:15 No offense to this guy. Yeah. Lauren, you must be awesome. Way to be awesome, Lauren. Lauren, you're probably super hot, super independent. Sex is great. Good for you, Lauren. You have a platinum vagine.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Yep. Do you want to go? Yeah. You're doing that thing that a lot of guys do, and it's like you just stay. I know a lot of guys who just stay in relationships because it's just kind of like, why not? You can feel that way about the lunch you have. I might as well eat it. It's there.
Starting point is 00:44:47 but like when it comes to a relationship if you're feeling that way like i could take it or leave it i guess i'll just take it today like that's a really sure as shit way to know that he's not your person 10 months that's nothing right and i'm kind of coming from a position where most of my relationships have developed like it went from zero to 100 in like two seconds and i'm at a point now where i'm like okay slow burn is good but even after you know you're seeing somebody for a couple months i'm like okay like you know if this isn't happening it's not happening and i think that especially after almost a year dude if you're not if you don't love somebody after a year of being together and you're like yeah you should be in that intimate space that's
Starting point is 00:45:27 a that's a red flag no you deserve to have like a firework relationship so go out there and find one at least for the first two months until you get real and find and he smell his poop for the first time and then you're like oh yeah i thought i loved you but i loved you get to that weird place later yeah get to the start hot and then in 10 months and be like me right it's only gonna kind of go kind of flat yeah so if it sucks in the beginning then shit back callie i'm i'm with you guys i don't think i don't think this is your man lauren sorry lauren being single is not that bad okay second question comes from anonymous anonymous says basically i'm engaged which i don't really understand what that means but i think this girl's engaged my fiance ish ish
Starting point is 00:46:13 my fiance is perfect but my concern is i have a best friend from high school and a best friend from college who i've been extremely close to in the last six years or so of my life my best friend from younger days and i have drifted apart and aren't as close as we used to be but we swore that we would be each other's maid of honor when we were young she brings it up all the time and it's awkward so the day has come to finally choose and i really think my relationship with my new my new bff warrants the title how do i have the conversation with my high school friend do i make them co-maid of honors does none of this actually matter help first of all the maid of honor thing is not your problem and non the sentence basically i'm engaged is your problem
Starting point is 00:46:56 so confused okay girl are you so you're either engaged i think she's saying like basically i'm engaged oh like this is the story basically here's the story okay i'm hoping that you are engaged because if you're already having these thoughts and the engagement hasn't happened yet okay you think you're like basically here's the story okay fine um i was confused here's what i think neither find someone else split the difference ever no that's great advice terrible advice don't have a wedding party that's what i did she wants it though if you want a wedding party is there a third person a sister a cousin a brother's girlfriend that you can put as maid of honor and then have them be on the same place okay that's bizarre that's bizarre bizarre advice
Starting point is 00:47:38 i think it's great advice okay like that is my worst nightmare to find the third most important person in my life to be my maid of honor no there's gotta be a terrible have your fiance's sister's sister call your second grade she's gonna lose a friend no no she won't not if she handles this in a in a like an adult way here two options okay well you already have once the three options two options okay the the first option is there's no rule anywhere saying you have to have one maid of honor so a maid of honor at all yeah but she clearly like wants one and i know that there's girls out there that are like i want my maid of honor like the girl holding my bouquet while i'm saying my vows and yada yada yada whatever you can have two and that's not that
Starting point is 00:48:24 big of a deal and just explain to both of them that they're very important to you and you can't choose just one or if if it's actually pretty good yeah or okay here's the other thing i have to tell you this anonymous you're in hindsight looking back at your wedding you're not going to be like it was perfect except i didn't have the maid of honor i wanted your maid of honor does nothing extra special other than deal with all the other bitches and that's the worst job ever so you're kind of doing whoever a favor like by not making them the maid of honor anyway where am i the where i'm going with this tell us where you're going i'm brain dead i have like the worst cold ever so it's not going to affect your life or your wedding and if you think it's going
Starting point is 00:49:08 to be a friendship ender which i don't then just like suck it up and have your best long longest best friend be the person like longest best friend should always trump newest best friend yeah like i think if you're worried about not making her your maid of honor if she's your best friend probably something to look at with the friendship but i i don't think there's anything wrong in having two maids of honor and i get the feeling of having a new friend that you really really want and is in your life now and maybe knows your fiance better and is part of your world so if you have a new friend and she means that much to you and you want her up there with you but you're so concerned about this other older best friend just make them both yeah right no there's
Starting point is 00:49:52 no rule or have none i'd say have none or have them both like it's you don't want to like ruin your friendship with somebody it's true and sometimes this is like very important to people like and they both can do a bunch of shit so meanwhile like my two best friends from the my entire life weren't even able to make it to my wedding so like clearly i'm not the right person because i really i missed them but i didn't give a shit all right our last see you at the next one the wedding is not about you and your friendships the wedding is about you and the person you're getting married to and i feel like i say that all the time but i feel like bitches don't understand this it's not about you and your girlfriends but that's why i'm like just i don't know make it the
Starting point is 00:50:30 easiest way that's not going to piss people off and cause drama okay last question comes from megan megan says a few months ago my cousin don't date don't date your cousin a cousin oh my god okay uh a few months ago my cousin cousin are you having trouble with that one i'm having a stroke we're all struggling a lot today today's bleak my cousin who i've always been super close with decided to elope with her now husband they've been together for about three or four years but the whole time they've been together he's been extremely mentally abusive at one point he told her she couldn't see me or a few of our other cousins because we were bad influences she calls and texts me once a week crying that she's scared or upset i've always wanted to talk to her about
Starting point is 00:51:15 the marriage and leaving him but is it really my place any advice on how to go about this oh man this is her journey this is your journey no no no no no megan's journey this is her cousin's journey journey megan this is bordering on you being a righteous friend and some here's the thing if you but she's calling her and crying to her 100 but she's not leaving i've had so many friends call and be like my marriage is over i'm getting a divorce this is it he does this and this and this and then in a week right in a week later it's like you cannot come between them she has to do it on her own you can give advice and give it through love here's what i would do but you
Starting point is 00:52:00 absolutely have to keep your secrets close to the chest i'm with kelty on this one i think unfortunately in these situations and i've had a few friends in these situations at the end of the day until it's their decision they will always choose their boyfriend fiance husband and you can be there in a loving way and say you know when you are ready i am here for you if and when you need me i am here for you so that she feels like she has a safe place but if you go in there with judgments and concerns and interventions you may lose a relationship right and then she has no one except for her abusive husband oh shit it's dark ditto i had a friend who's had like a real crazy husband moment and the mother-in-law like it got so bad that she like the mother of my friend was
Starting point is 00:52:57 like yo like on facebook or whatever just like hey you gotta chill like this is crazy and then it like ruined her relationship with her right yeah then you're gonna reach like reached out to the husband and she was like you know this is insane a message to a message like are we okay like how can i help and like this is a mess and then it like ruined their relationship right between the mom it ruins relationships here's the thing if she's not smart enough to leave this terrible relationship nothing you can do or say is going to change anything right and i think in a position like that too it's like even if it's like messed up love like love is still blind and she will end up resenting the people that are trying to like control what she's doing with her
Starting point is 00:53:31 life so kelty stop texting sorry i'm just i'm so excited about snap seed thank you callie for being here i'm literally posting an instagram i am because i'm so excited she's not paying attention to where callie how did she do okay well actually here callie why don't you right now look at it okay so i'm thinking that my caption is going to be floral leg day for the win because i have floral leggings on you told me not to be literal the only thing i can say is here's my leggings body glove thanks for sending them to me sp body glove hashtag ad um nothing bad floral leg day for the win i feel like we can do better we can okay well you guys will have to tune in flower power floral frenzy i'll think about it i hate all these all right well anyway um thanks
