podcast one presents the lady gang the hollywood girl posse with lady gang quickie here's kelty
knight becca tobin and jack vanik let's make this quick
hello hello hello welcome to lake and quickie i am becca here with jack and kelty and we have
an extra special guest with us today kelty how did we get so lucky well the cool thing about
this episode is like what i love about when we're going to have a guest on a lot of times we have
like a pre-call right we're just like hey what do you want to talk about and because this is
specifically health related like we need to get on the phone and be like what are you going to
teach us today so before i introduce him um we were on the call and it was clear that he had
been listening to lady gang to like get ready for this appearance and so i'm like yeah like
we're just so crazy. And he's like, I know Jack and her wedding dress. Oh, that's where you went
out of all the crazy. It wasn't a Kelty thing. Nope. So on that note, in 2023, we are all about
getting our shit together. And since I Kelty, I'm on a health journey. Now everyone's on a
health journey at Lady Gang and all of our listeners are on a health journey too. I'm
very sorry. Today we're welcoming Angelo Keeley, co-founder and CEO of Kion, a supplement and
functional food company dedicated to helping health and fitness enthusiasts live long,
active, joyful lives by providing clean energy enhancing solutions. Now, a few months ago,
I mentioned to everyone on this podcast, we had her on the podcast. I started working with our
health coach and a nutritionist, and she actually recommended me this product. So I wanted him to
come on today to explain to us how our bodies work because I'm 41 and I have no idea. So today's
quickie is all about the importance of muscle protein, amino acids for body composition and
overall health. And Angela is going to make it really easy to understand. So hi, welcome. Hello.
Welcome. Hi. Thank you for having me. Great to be here.
Angela, first of all, tell me your background. Where did you start and how did you get into
the psych health journey? We were just talking before the Zoom started and I was talking about
how much I hate phone calls. And he was like, I always do phone calls because then I can walk.
And I was like, that's a true health person. So where did this all come from?
So yeah, I think lots of people who end up working in the health industry or make a health company,
like maybe they identify like some specific problem that existed. My story is a little
different. I was basically just raised in it. I was born into a family where my parents were in,
they owned a natural health food store, a natural health food restaurant when I was born. That's
like what they were doing. And before that, my dad was in vitamins and herbs as a business.
And so I was raised very, very hippie just outside Austin, Texas in Wimberley. I was born at home
and um yeah i just had like super hippie parents so i was given vitamins i wasn't taken to the
doctor but my parents were also super into fitness and they were really into trying to eat well and
they were pescatarians meaning we ate fish and um plant proteins we didn't really eat like meat
proteins i do eat other meat now and so with that they thought a lot about like how do we eat and
so amino acids are actually one of the main things i remember my mom giving me when i was a little
kid. I actually remember being like three years old and her being like, Angie, can't you feel
them? Like the hippie mom, like giving her kid these vitamins and be like, aren't they amazing?
And, and, uh, so I might just be brainwashed in this whole thing, but like, I can still feel them
and I still have just, you know, super positive memories of, of how committed my parents were to
health. That said, I think like most people you grew up in an environment, you maybe don't even
know, like that, what you believe is weird. I think I did know because I was raised in kind of,
a nicer part of Austin with a bunch of more suburban, normal people. And I was the one
weird hippie kid. But as I got older, I started to explore. My parents got out of the health
business but stayed entrepreneurs. I have a more traditional, manic entrepreneurial spirit.
And with that comes a lot of experimentation. I experimented with a lot of drugs,
a lot of bad behavior. I got into a lot of trouble. When I was 16, I took way too much LSD.
I basically had a psychotic break. I've never been violent in my life, but I provoked
a fight with these people who are much more hardcore than me. And they, they beat the
shit out of me and they stabbed me twice in the back and in the knee. So it severed my patella
tendon. I'd have emergency abdominal surgery, stuff like a huge scar down my abdomen. And I
mean, I got beat so bad that I didn't wake up for, for days. Um, so coming out of that,
it kicked off for me, like my own health journey. It's not my parents, you know,
like, you need to eat this way. And this is what healthy people do. And it was like, Whoa, like
I'm like my own person. I was 16. So I'm like, I'm like my own person in this life.
Death is real. Health is real. Like, what do I want my life to be? And at that point, I like
all this weird hippie mumbo jumbo stuff. My parents had pitched to me suddenly became much
more interesting. I was like trying yoga and meditation and acupuncture and going to the
chiropractor and trying to eat well, et cetera. So that really like kick started my whole journey
of health, like my health journey, not the one my parents gave me. That said, like I ended up
being nowhere really near the health business world for years. I ended up, I went to school
for, I actually went to school for like religious studies and philosophy because I thought that was
really interesting at the time, kind of a seeker. But it took me to where then I ended up having a
career. It started in France. I lived in France for a few years and then I moved to India, had a
career there. And then after all that, but kind of through this, my girlfriend who'd become my
fiance was like done. She was like, yo, I like want babies now. Like I've been saying this for
like five years, like for real. And so I quit my job and moved to Boulder, Colorado, which is where
her family was near and tried a few different types of businesses, was in behavioral healthcare
for a couple of years, a few years actually, pretty successfully. And then I just wanted to
do something new. And it was like, honestly, it was like coming back to my roots. And so I make
the joke of it, but it's almost like, um, I basically made the company that would make my
three-year-old three old Angie. This is what my mom called me. Like what would make his mom proud
to be like an amino acid company. So I think I just, I didn't like plan it. I just kind of went
back to my roots. What are the things I care about? What are the products I really believe in?
And so it's been almost six years now. Really? It's just been like really like building my dream
company? Like who, who are the most amazing people I want to work with every day? What are
the most, what are the truly like the highest quality products we can make? Um, what are the
products that I actually want to take every day? And I think most people should, who want to live
a vibrant life, not maybe what's like the coolest, hottest new made up thing that the health industry
thinks is great, but like really what's, what's proven the test of time and is an awesome product
that will add real value to people's lives. And, um, and I would say that's why essential amino
acids are our hero product because I really believe in them as they're the thing. And now
I'm going to ask the question that I know Jack and Becca are wondering, and also me,
what the is an amino acid? That was exactly the wording I was about to use too.
Yeah. So I have no idea. I've been taking this product, but like, I don't know what it is or
what it does. I love it. I love it. Okay. So the easiest, the easiest way to get into this subject
is just to talk about macros. So you guys know what carbs are generally, you know,
what carbohydrates are. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, carbohydrates are like, um, they're basically
sugars and then there's fats and then there's this third macronutrient called protein. There's
actually a fourth alcohol, but it's not really that one. Yeah. It's a good one. Um, but basically,
um, carbs and fat, their primary role in our life is to give us energy. We actually like take the
fat and where we take the carbs and we break it down into smaller component parts. And then we
transform it into this thing called ATP. I won't get any more science than that. And we use it as
fuel. And it like literally gives us the energy, like you like fuel similar to like, uh, that you
would use to drive a car or to light a light bulb. Protein can be used for that, but that's not
really its role. So protein is made up. Its constituent parts are amino acids and there's
20 of them that are literally the proteins in our body. What people don't realize though is in our
body, like you guys have probably heard over 50% of your body is water, right? Well, of the part
that's not water, that's solid mass, over 50% of that is proteins. And all of that is just a bunch
of amino acids grouped together. So amino acids are basically these building blocks of the proteins
in your body. But the proteins in your body aren't just your muscles. They're what make up your heart,
your kidneys your skin your hair your nails your eyeballs they also make up uh in anytime you hear
health people talk about enzymes those are proteins they're made up of amino acids the
neurotransmitters that basically create all the feelings and emotions in your human experience
those are made up from amino acids so proteins are like a they're a big deal and amino acids
are the building blocks of them so what the is an essential amino acid i think is what you asked
the essential amino acid are basically the nine out of those 20 that are super important
and the reason why they're super important is because they're the nine they're called essential
your body can't make them your body can actually make a lot of things if you consume those nine
it can make the other 11 but it cannot make the nine so you have to eat them so the reason why
you would ultimately maybe die in life is actually from a deficiency of never not eating enough of
proteins or the essential amino acids within them. And those nine amino acids are not only
important because they're the things that you can't make, but also they are the thing that
help to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. And it sounds fancy, but I'm going to break it down
super simple. All proteins in nature and in our bodies are in this really cool state of breaking
down and then rebuilding themselves. So a protein is not static. It's not like you just have muscle
tissue and it just stays that way. It actually has a half-life. It starts to break down and it
breaks down into the component amino acids and then it needs to rebuild. But when it breaks down,
it can't use all those amino acids. Some of them are like not good anymore. At least 20% are just
like you can't use them. So, you need more. So, that's where the essential amino acids come in.
Your body, the primary role of proteins and amino acids inside them is to help rebuild the proteins
in your body, to rebuild your liver tissue, your heart tissue, to be able to fuel your brain with
neurotransmitters to help you build muscle. So they're the super, super, super key thing that
basically makes everything in your body work. And if you don't have enough of them and you don't
eat them in the right doses or during the right parts of the day, et cetera, then you can have
all these other issues and problems. And we can start to get more into that and like, well, how
do you get the right amount, et cetera, but that's what they are. Oh, wow. We are learning so much.
I want to go right before we get into more science. I want to talk about the vanity of women, because for me, when my health coach was like, this is going to help you have more energy, it's going to support your systems and all those things that you're doing. And it's also like really good for aging and keeping your hair and your nails nice. And like we have been eating every gummy vitamin for hair, skin, nails, and like little, no one ever told us it was amino acids. It's building our hair.
So why is muscle and amino acids important for aging well and for like overall beauty
in a super vain way?
For being hot.
Not like for the hotness, not your internal, like your heart is pumping, right?
Like I'm talking about hotness.
Got it.
So I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that most women and your audience, that when they
think about being hot, part of that is having good body composition.
It's not being like – and that doesn't just mean like being super like skinny.
It's like having a toned body.
It's having a beautiful toned body that's like not too athletic, but it's not too skinny, but not too fat.
It's like everyone's trying to find this –
Goldilocks.
Yeah, the Goldilocks healthy medium.
So fundamentally, when you take amino acids, they will help you build lean muscle.
They will help you build lean muscle without getting bulky and without putting on additional weight because they're extremely calorically efficient, way less calories than something like meat or other types of whole food protein type things.
But on top of that, when you have the right amount of lean muscle, it raises your metabolism and helps you burn more fat all the time.
So if you maintain a good, solid, just consistent amount of lean tone muscle throughout your body, it'll make it easier to not gain fat.
Also, every single time you consume protein, but especially it's the essential amino acids in protein, they do something called diet-induced thermogenesis.
They increase your metabolism for the next three hours.
But not like in a kind of –
Not Adderall or like fat burner kind of like – honestly, they're kind of scammy and they tweak you out and they're not sustainable.
This is like the healthy, sustainable, like sensible way to actually raise your metabolism in a way that's helping you not just like be, you know, spazzed out, but actually give you also the body you want.
So I think at the most fundamental level, it's like body composition.
This is like the secret sauce.
When you start to get into hair, skin, nails, this is why a lot of women take collagen.
So collagen is actually made up of a lot of amino acids.
it's not a it's not made up of a complete profile of essential amino acids it's super high in
certain ones that are the ones that go into your hair skin nails etc and so it can be supportive
and good for that but it doesn't count as protein it doesn't help with lean muscle it doesn't help
with diet induced thermogenesis it doesn't do any of that stuff all it does is directly go to like
the hair skin nails essential amino acids on the other hand when you take them they support the
body composition and the metabolism benefits, but they also directly get converted into
these non-essential amino acids that support basically glowing skin, beautiful hair,
nails, et cetera, all of those types of things. And if you compound all this on top of aging,
which is, I think this is the bigger thing, it becomes even more significant.
because when you are 20, you are able to digest proteins and get the amino acids out of them
much more efficiently. And you're more sensitive and more efficient at processing those amino
acids to maintain the lean muscle, to get it transferred into your hair, skin, nails.
As you get older at 30, and then, sorry, but at 40, it really starts to slow down.
You simply can't digest the protein as much and you're not as sensitive to the amino acids.
So the benefits of taking something like an essential amino acid supplement in addition to eating healthy foods becomes dramatically more important.
It's somewhere between – and each decade, it basically gets more intense.
From like three to four to five and when you're 80 or something, six times more protein synthesis than a whole food protein.
Basically, it's three times as effective as eating healthy meats, et cetera, at stimulating
the protein synthesis.
So just think about it this way.
It's like a cheat code.
It's like a cheat code to lean muscle, to metabolism, to a sustainable figure, and to
healthy hair, skin, nails.
That's not a cheat code that has a bunch of downsides.
It's going to make you turn into a crazy at the end of the day.
Yeah.
Everyone knows in their early 20s, and we talk about it all the time, where you were
like, it was just so much easier. Like when I was 20, I could treat my body like shit for like,
you know, and I wake up the next morning and still feel good. And it wasn't hard to, you know,
there was always this thing and, and this is like trigger warning for anyone, but there was this
thing of like, you can just go on a diet for two days and then you feel better. You know what I
mean? You didn't have to like have these long, like it was just easier. Your body was more
reactive. So what you're saying makes perfect sense. Um, and then as you get older, obviously
everything goes to shit. So that's why we have people like you on our podcast so we can figure
out how not to do this. You probably know that the human body is mostly water. What you probably
don't know is that everything else in your body is 50% amino acids. These building blocks are
essential for health and fitness. No matter how you like to move, whatever you do to stay fit,
amino acids are essential. This is why Keon Aminos is my fundamental supplement for fitness. I drink
them every day for energy muscle and recovery kion aminos is backed by over 20 years of clinical

The Lady Gang. The next question I have is about dieting. So I know that when I was reading about
you in this product, it's like the yo-yo diets and cutting calories. We were taught in the 90s
that if you want to lose weight, you put in less than you're using and that's like the easy math
and whatever. But you're saying that without actually taking amino acids, nothing's going
to happen anyway? Cause your body's in shock. How does that all work? It's not quite that simple.
I think, but what I'll say is like more than one thing is true at the same time. And if you only
focus on one of the truths, then you could actually end up somewhere different than you
want to be. So if you consume less calories than you burn in a day, you will lose weight.
The thing is you will not only lose fat, you will lose muscle. So when you deprive yourself
of calories, about 3,500 calories, you lose about a pound of fat. Muscle will start to lose
about a pound of muscle at 750 calorie deficit. Now your body's always kind of prioritizing what
it uses, but if you just try to dramatically reduce your calories and at the same time,
dramatically reduce your protein and thus your essential amino acid content during that phase
of losing weight, you're losing fat and muscle at the same time. And then most people go back to
their subpar behaviors, right? Like where they splurge again and then binge eat and do something
and you put back on the weight, but you don't put that when you put back on the weight,
like you lost 10 pounds. When you put back on that 10 pounds, it's, you don't get any of the
muscle back. All you get back is the fat. So when you do this yo-yo dieting back and forth,
you keep cutting calories, you're losing fat and muscle. Then you eat poorly again. Then you put
only back on the fat. And after doing that many, many times, you end up with just the fat and none
of the muscle and if my sense is that most people when they're thinking about losing weight they're
not just talking about just fat it's an idea of it's a feeling of their body a way that they look
in the mirror it's like a sense of being in the world that like looks beautiful to them and feels
good to them and that includes being tone you know it's not just being you know super super thin
and so um the main thought is that if you are going to cut calories to lose weight which is
a great way to lose weight. You must maintain high levels of essential amino acids in your diet.
And to do that, it means you need to eat kind of only super lean meats. It's like,
it's actually quite hard. For example, you Kelty, if you're a pescatarian and you're eating plant
proteins, because we need a plant protein, it's got a lot of carbs in it in addition to the
protein. So when you try to cut down the amount of rice and beans that you're eating, you're also
cutting down the protein. And so if you deprive yourself of this protein, when you're losing
weight, then you will lose muscle. But if you ensure that you continue to have higher levels
of essential amino acids, you will only lose the fat. You will not lose the muscle. You can
actually even increase muscle mass while losing fat mass, which typically is like,
it seems kind of like it doesn't even make sense to people. Like, how can I be building this one
mass when I'm in a caloric deficit? If you're taking enough essential amino acids via supplementation
and food and you're exercising, you can actually be increasing your lean muscle while losing fat.
The simple story is if you just cut calories and you don't pay attention to how much protein
you're eating or how much essential amino acids you're eating, because that's really the thing
in protein that you're using. You pee out a lot of the non-essential amino acids. You're really
just using the essential amino acids from the protein. Then you're going to end up not with
the body that you're trying to get. It's being oversimplified basically. You really have to
think about essential amino acids, increasing that while you're decreasing your calories.
Well, and women are like bone density goes down by a crazy, crazy amount. And if we don't have
muscle, then we're basically just feeble old ladies who are falling down and breaking things
like Kelty. Which is why I'm on the health journey, bitches. That's why I'm on the health
journey. Can I ask you a super specific, selfish question? Cause I have you, um, so I work out,
I have this trainer guy and he's really wonderful.
And part of my program is that I have a,
like a workout pre-workout situation.
And in it is a regular protein powder and a,
and a it's called extend BCAA,
like a seven G BCAA.
Is that a version,
a shittier version of what you have?
Great question.
Simple answer.
Yes.
I thought so.
Okay.
And,
and here's,
and here's why I would just encourage,
you not to use BCAAs at all, but you could. And the specific way that he's advising you could
make sense, but it gets really complicated. And it's like, people are just trying to figure out
what to do. And it's like, if we overcomplicate it, then it becomes a pain. Quite simply,
if you take branch chain amino acids, that's what BCAA is. That's like, and I'm not going to name
any brands. I don't want to basically put anyone down. But if you take only the BCAAs,
it's from science 40 years ago where they measured that it increased the muscle protein synthesis but
what's become very apparent over the last 30 years i mean there's like hundreds of studies
documenting this if you take bcaas on their own they create no increase in muscle protein synthesis
and they're actually potentially catabolic meaning they're worse for you they yeah so you must have
all nine of the essential amino acids the bcaas are only three of the nine if you don't have the
other six at the same time that it doesn't work. The small reason why it could be working in the
way that he's advising you is because you're combining it with the protein. But what I would
just say is it depends on what your goals are. You literally could take just Keon Aminos or
similar brand like that of essential amino acids. No, you're a brand. Come on.
I mean, I just like, I want to make sure I'm like offering education and support.
You're offering education, but also you're here because I like your products. So you can talk
about it and i'll be honest the reason why i say or another brand like ours is because there's not
one like you can i can get it i can get into like you look for the transparency of the label
look for the amount of each amino acid that actually follows what the nasa nih all the
studies showed no one's doing it so right yeah i dare you i dare you to find one that's as good
but if you take if you take one scoop of keon aminos before you exercise it's equal to 15 grams
of protein. So whatever that big shake is that you're drinking combined with the BCAAs, it's
like, it's kind of like wrecks your gut. Just think you could just take two scoops of Keon
aminos and it'd be equal to 30 grams of protein. And you, I mean, I can't tell exactly how big
you are, but I don't think you need more than 30 grams of protein before you work out. Like that
would be max, probably even one scoop or one and a half scoops would be good for you. And you would
get pretty much like the most effective dose and then, and then take another scoop after or two
scoops after that was my question for after and then yeah i did hear through this weird community
um that taking aminos with a sugary drink like gatorade shuttles it through your body to the
part that you just worked out great question so if your goal is where are you on you went out of
space becca i'm just getting ripped for summer yeah but you actually but you don't want this
Becca. I doubt it. So if, if your goal is to build muscle mass and to look really bulky,
then drink sugar and take carbs with your amino acids. It will push more water into the cell
and will make you look bigger. So most women want to build lean muscle. I'm not saying you need to,
but most do. If you consume sugar or carbs, when you eat the protein, it will increase the amount
of muscle protein synthesis, but it'll make, it'll make your muscles more swole. It'll make
you look like more jacked. Like you're in the top gun. I would not like, unless it's, unless
that's the look you're looking for. If you're looking more for like the slim tone look, I would
consume, I would get away from the protein BCAA combination and I would just do Keon aminos before
and Keon aminos after. And like, that's, it's going to give you lean muscle, fat burning energy
through your workout, way increased recovery. So you can exercise again sooner and have more energy
and improve the actual development of the muscle the most over anything else.
And so I was given this product by Jess. Um, and even though like, I'm not doing a lot of
intense workouts right now, I'm just kind of doing my daily walks. And she was like, this is,
you'll have yours before and after your walk. So if you're just walking your dog or taking your
kid around the block, like it's also great. It does give you a boost of energy, which is actually,
I thought originally before we had talked, it was just an energy drink. So I was like,
oh this is amazing i had no idea i was getting like muscle build and stuff this is the story of
kelty's life yeah i was just like what i'll do anything anyone tells me do but i i gotta like
you know what else is a good time cocaine don't ask what it does but it's super fun
just before and after the walk i mean like when you're walking yeah you know but it's super easy
to take so tell us about the product that you invented what is in it how to take it and and
where we can get it so just to highlight something you said another amazing thing about kian aminos
is that even taking them outside of exercise stimulates muscle protein synthesis. And this
is kind of like really surprising even to like gym bros who are not, because those people tend
to like study all the ways to like lose weight and build muscle. And they think it doesn't work
that way. It does because essential amino acids do not have to be like broken down from the
proteins. They immediately enter the blood. They literally stimulate the muscle protein synthesis,
stimulate the the increased metabolism give you that energy and it's it's not as good as like
exercising like it's not going to be as beneficial as if you like went and you know did pull-ups and
curls and stuff like that but it it's it it creates benefits like exercise like resistance
exercise without even having to exercise and before a walk is great it makes it to where it
will stimulate even more of that and support your body better and it does give you energy it actually
gives you mental energy because as i said before the amino acids are what create either they
themselves are the neurotransmitters or they're the precursors of the neurotransmitters that
literally give you energy in your brain and that's why when people run really hard for like over an
hour they start to feel not just energy fatigue but like kind of brain fatigued it's because of
a decrease in certain amino acids an increase in tryptophan that then floods your brain gives you
more serotonin it makes you kind of like sleepy and tired so it directly affects your energy so
what's the product basically we just looked at hired an external firm to do a meta-analysis of
all the research got someone who was actually part of one of those nasa studies that's super
really interesting studies they did they analyze all the research what's the ideal formula and the
ideal formula is with i won't bore your audience with it but if you look at the back of our bottle
it is that it's based off of human skeletal muscle the exact tweaks you need to make to
certain amino acids to increase the impact um on protein synthesis it's in the exact dosages that
you need it's all third-party tested it's the most premium amino acids you can get it's super
clean label it's something my hippie mom would be okay with but also my um suburban wife likes to
drink i'm like between the two worlds and it's it's just the product that um it tastes awesome
it's the highest quality um there's really nothing that comes that comes close to it so
that's it what else can i say and where do people go i mean we're gonna link it because i do think
this is like really important for girls because we're i don't know we got we got stuck in like a
weird age diet movement and it's really important for us to learn even jack when she's going on her
treadmill walks now before her wedding like this is perfect for her um where can we get it get
kion.com slash lady gang. And there's a special offer just for your crew. So it's get key on his
G E T K I O N.com slash lady gang. And there's up to 20% off. I love this. And I think you should
get the color that I'm going to tell you to get. And I don't even know what flavor it is. I think
we discussed those mixed berry. It's purple and teal on the label. That's my favorite. Is that,
is it is it mixed berry that one is mixed berry and what i would just say is like it's tough
everyone some people people just have different flavor preferences there's mixed berry there's
lime watermelon and mango they're all natural flavors again super clean label and you just
like add it to your water guys you don't have it doesn't take a whole it's not a whole rigmarole
where you need a blender and you'd be making this thing in a special shaker like you literally just
put it in your water bottle you do want to shake it and we also have sand we have like a variety
bundle sample packets if you prefer and you can get eight of each flavor and see which one you
like but you basically just put it in your water bottle i suggest with very cold water it's similar
to like um other protein like a milk when you're a little kid like cold milk was always better than
warm milk so like i put ice and water in it and just shake the bottle and you know shake it for
30 seconds and it's it's like this amazing drink that also helps you drink more water yeah thank
you for this like kelty said women we got really no one was sharing any of their tips and tricks
