Starting point is 00:01:30 my emotional spiritual animal and i'm like not mine i don't drink diet coke someone actually sent me a friend of mine paul when i posted about the little girl chugging a diet coke in the waiting room of a doctor's office that i was recently in um he messaged me he's like hey here's an article about why it's actually not so bad and i read the article about diet coke and listen at these days i can fall for anything but i sort of believed it you know what on the internet there's an article about anything that will uh tell you whatever you want to hear so just go ahead and choose your own adventure you know it's like you want to murder someone it's okay because yeah yeah no it's true confirmation bias okay i need to start okay well it's time for good week
Starting point is 00:02:18 yes it is bad week oh no you guys in the history of lady gang i have never had a skim like the skim i had yesterday this is my bad week oh god i hate these stories when you are like kelty is not thinking straight she skims her life you're like ah whatever she didn't read the email yesterday to go get some blood work done drove to burbank at 4 p.m found a parking spot was very excited um went to go do my blood got my blood taken no line love it get back to the car i always have two sets of car keys one that's in my pocket and one that i keep in my car because i don't know why why i don't know why i left my car parked on the street in burbank running doors open keys inside you mean unlocked or open unlocked unlocked because i have an electric
Starting point is 00:03:23 vehicle so you can't really hear it and so normally when you put it in park you then have to press off for it to turn off right i didn't press off and because i had that extra set of keys in the car it didn't turn itself off or alert me like hey girl you're leaving your car on but you're walking away from it it just sat there someone could have stolen my it sat there for an hour running on open keys wow mail in the back also the lady gang suitcase from tampa with our merch leftover merch in it and two samsung tablets in the back i thought it was gonna be worse i thought this skin would be worse you are in store for a like life-changing skin oh i felt like that was pretty life-changing but okay it would have been life-changing if somebody if somebody stole
Starting point is 00:04:18 it yeah but even then you had some guardian angel who's in charge of taking care of all the idiots on earth looking over you definitely okay good week i have a new tagline for the lady gang i'm so excited to share this with you i heard it on rupaul's drag race all winners all stars all stars all winners which is the greatest season of drag race ever um i think it was but it is now lady gang the who's who of who's available wait what kelty knight is the who's who of who's available i don't you don't get it no no the who's who like it's like the who's who of hollywood was at the vanity fair oscar party and then they're like they're like the who's who of who was available is that the dog awards oh i get it
Starting point is 00:05:11 okay that's wow it's a little inside baseball expect no the who's who of who's available like you're so pathetic you're available no i was thinking you know who used that really really geniusly in her book casey rose wilson she was at a friend's wedding and it was all actors of her caliber which is they called it the who's who of who's that again yes the who's who of who's that again the who's who of who's available like i'm always available yeah i get it now do you want to come to the thing for five dollars yes do you want to come to the opening of this envelope sure the who's who of who's available yeah okay i like it i just think anything that you have to explain it's not i wouldn't have to explain it to him i swear to god everyone
Starting point is 00:05:53 listening this podcast right now they're like that's funny ha ha ha and you guys are idiots well let us know okay okay um i'll go next okay so zach and i have been watching a new show it's called blackbird and it's really good it's about this guy who's like a drug dealer who gets sent undercover to a high security prison to find out if the serial killer where the serial killer buried bodies of the girls he killed sounds like a me show yeah it actually is great i mean listen i don't really love shows that take place in jail because they're they gross me out because there's always like you know toilets next to that stainless steel toilets like always next to the bed crusty stuff next to the bed. They always make it really like real, very real. Um, but with that said,
Starting point is 00:06:41 where we start watching this show and I'm like, God, that guy is like so familiar, but he's also like, he's very attractive, you know, like he's got like the lead guy in it. And I'm like, why do I know him? Like he's, he's really like his body's hot, his face is hot, but I couldn't really place it so then i look on imdb and it's this guy who played elton john in the elton john movie taryn oh yeah he's wonderful egerton is that how you say his name yeah and i was like oh my god that was the last person to ever hit on me yes i was like this is not a very good story until just now wait tell us that so we were out in west hollywood he had just finished the elton john movie was the elton john movie out or finished filming it was out i believe because i think i had i
Starting point is 00:07:36 hadn't seen it yet but it was out okay and he was there with a mutual friend and i was introduced to him and this is gonna sound bad but i like it he really wasn't like exceptionally anything special that night to me in person he was like very very nice and like a norm normal and i was like oh that's sweet like i can't wait to see him play elton john i just kind of but he was like very cute subtle not like anything insane but i was like oh wow if i'd been single i definitely could have gone home with elton john tonight and and i it wasn't exciting to me because i was like he really doesn't do it for me well i'll tell you you were wrong he got me back he got me back because in this show he is fire flames really you could have been mrs elton tarrant john
Starting point is 00:08:28 agerton did he win the oscar i i don't know i don't think so but anyway it was just he's okay cute he's british you know oh he's british he's not british in the show though which is weird so the british him the real him didn't do it for me but then this guy that's not british on the show did it for me interesting it's usually the other way around i love an accent yeah i know okay um so my bad week is i was on tiktok where all bad things start and this girl went to chick-fil-a and got this salad and she did this she did her like remix of the salad her rendition of making this southwest salad and she put in like different dressings different sauces blah blah blah blah blah and it looked really good so i was like you know what i don't know what i want i couldn't figure
Starting point is 00:09:14 out what i was in the mood to eat that day and i was like i'm gonna try this salad rendition and i order the salad on doordash and i'm like waiting and waiting and waiting and normally things come very quickly here and i'm waiting and i'm waiting and i look at my app and it's like it's been delivered i'm like no it hasn't and i walk outside and i look around it's not been delivered and i'm like what the neighbors took it no then i file like a formal complaint with doordash and i'm like it didn't make it here and blah blah blah you know how crazy you can go on an app when you're really like hungry and pissed off yeah you're supposed to have your food well i looked at the app one more time and it got delivered to our hotel in new york city
Starting point is 00:09:49 uh where the last time i placed a door dash order was so uh someone ordered the southwest salad at the conrad in new york city and it arrived a skim a becca skim oh wow this was my skim you know it's not really a skim though because i have done that recently too and it's tough in those apps they do just put your last location, even if you're across the country, it's very, it's not an easy find. I recently accidentally ordered something from Amazon to my old address in Canada. I can't get it back and I can't return it. Yeah, no, no, no. It's, it's, it's definitely a flaw. And I feel like some of them are like, like I tried to order, order an Uber for someone that was like, not in my city. And that Uber app was like, it looks like you're ordering an Uber far away from where you
Starting point is 00:10:36 i was like thank you uber yeah they should thank you for noticing like what the door dash my location services are on you can have all of my information i'm on and available i'm on available you're taking all my personal information you're hearing me talk about door dash right now what are the odds i'm gonna get a door dash ad on instagram when i check my instagram in 10 minutes you know what i mean yeah jack um okay so mine is a bad week that turns into a good week so the last week we were kind of talking about how we're all irritated just all of the time. So I've been kind of in like a, not a great like mindset recently and you know, having a bad day. So Jared and I go out to lunch and we're sitting outside at this little cafe. I have my hydro
Starting point is 00:11:22 flask, my teal hydro flask at the table. And this woman comes up to us while we're waiting for our food. And she's like, Oh, that is the most beautiful color that I've ever seen in my life and starts freaking out about the color of my hydro flask it is a beautiful color i'm not a blue girl but live your life and it's a hydro jug by the way they're a sponsor of lady gang not hydro flask and i love it because it's huge but this lady's going on and on and on about the color and i'm like that's that's really nice the colors it's just a it's like a seafoam green like nothing crazy and then jared had one too and it had a uh yeti sticker on it she's like is it a yeti oh my gosh this is so crazy and we're like why are you guys going to restaurants with hydro
Starting point is 00:12:04 jugs it's very strange because we're doing it everywhere it's like we're doing a walk it is but a walk afterward that's something to that's large to carry with you on a walk she carries with it all time i carry it with me all the time but jared was carrying it we always take it on our walks so anyways this lady is like obsessed with it talks us for like five minutes and i'm like get it's enough i want to eat my purse like get out of here so then she goes to leave and she's like and she looks on the ground and there was a dog dish a yeti turquoise dog dish and she's like it's the same color what are the odds that there's two yeti things than this like seafoam green she's like this must be a sign from the universe it's going to be my lucky day
Starting point is 00:12:45 like blah blah blah what you get for living in venice okay very it was a very venice very woo woo type of a situation that was going on and all i wanted to do was eat my food and this lady was just could not leave because she was blown away it was a miracle she on mushrooms probably it was a miracle that she saw two turquoise things with yeti stickers on them right and she's like you know like whatever freaking out about it so i'm like well that just ruined my lunch but jared and i were eating i was kind of complaining about some shit going on and then i was like wow you know what it must be really nice to be in the mindset that this lady is where she takes something that is so like insignificant and like strings it together and then just is in such a good mood
Starting point is 00:13:31 so i decided that day i'm like you know what i'm gonna think like this lady like i'm just gonna like like a lunatic i'm gonna think like a lunatic for one day and then we went on a little walk and a little ladybug landed on jared which was like a sign of good luck and i was like well this is so nice like what are the chances that a ladybug would land on jared then we go out to eat we accidentally both got free drinks at the bar that we were at. And I'm like, this is our lucky day. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:13:58 you know what? We should buy lottery tickets. So we went and bought lottery tickets, didn't win, but you know what? That lady, she really turned around my day for like a good eight hours. And wow,
Starting point is 00:14:10 it was, it was a nice like end to my story. That's exciting. A run in with a woman on psychedelics can really turn your day around. I'm like, no, I was, it was crazy.
Starting point is 00:14:19 I've never seen anybody react to it. What, how old was she? i need like a visual with this woman was she wearing was she wearing like a cape no she was like she's like a gypsy like she's like works at hogwarts she's like she had hogwarts vibe like the the personality vibes were a little hogwartsy she was like in her probably mid-40s um but it was very it was very intense but i decided to you know to turn it around but then you know you wake up the next morning you're like i'm irritated again but it was a nice little run i'm proud of you for
Starting point is 00:14:50 being in an irritated mood and turning it around i've never been capable of doing that i need a full night's sleep between irritability and newness yeah well i woke up irritated so i have to be like this day is shit i gotta start a new day yeah all over it's always a new page in the boojo all right when we come back a special surprise from becca so before ford was born zach and i used to camp quite a bit and my favorite part of camping was just unplugging and sitting around a fire looking into the fire feeling cozy you can do that at home and we've started to with solo stove what's great about the solo stove fire pit they are stainless steel and they regulate airflow and burn more efficiently so little smoke you'll wonder how there's even a fire so it's the perfect

Based on the nationally representative sample of N500 customers 18 plus. you're listening to the lady gang so becca had a new baby ford was born in february yep april february all right so this is how it went down everyone we have been working on our new book lady secrets for two years basically
Starting point is 00:18:29 since act like a lady came out we had had this idea like because we had used a little bit of this idea at the end of the special Barnes and Noble edition of act like a lady. So we had had this idea to do like a secrets book. Um, and so we had to put it together. We had to pitch it. We had to go back to the publisher and be like, this is, we want to do another book. Do you want us to do another book? And they're like, okay, like, yeah, great. And then we worked on it for like two years. So within that two years, Becca has been through hell and back, uh, bringing baby forward into the world. And we had decided like how we're going to do the secrets and what essays we're going to write and then we were so so so lucky that at some point in this um we believed
Starting point is 00:19:14 that baby ford was going to come to the world and so we were really excited about it and so we saved a spot we had to work it out with the publisher special because everything has to be turned in when you do a book like so far in advance and we're like we're going to save a place and the whole time becca's waiting for baby ford she's like no no i'm gonna be fine like literally the week after ford's here i'll write an essay about motherhood and then like i'll put it in and she's He's like, it's fine. It's no big deal. And I was like, are you sure you don't want to take like six months off, like just to
Starting point is 00:19:39 be a mom? She's like, no, no, I got this. So we leave this hole in the thing. You can imagine the amount of countdowns I'm having about this unfinished manuscript going to print. Very stressful. And about two weeks after Ford was born, we tried to leave you alone. Um, Becca had written her chapter and her essay about motherhood and sent it in.
Starting point is 00:20:02 And, uh, this is it. Becca. Built Ford Tough Two weeks. It had been two whole weeks since Zach and I welcomed our baby boy Ford into the world via surrogate. Two weeks of vacillating between explosive joy and intense exhaustion. And two weeks of living what felt like every parenting cliche ever written, because apparently, they're all true. In the very beginning, i.e. the first week of Ford's life, we had my mom stay with us as an extra set of helping hands. Now it needs to be said that she is an actual saint and quite
Starting point is 00:20:45 possibly made of things ordinary humans are simply not. Because whether the baby was cooing, farting, or screaming his face off until he was the color of a tomato, her only response would be pure love and endless patience. Honestly, if child-rearing was all nurture, I'm pretty sure I would have turned out to be the world's most magnificent person because I was raised by this incredible woman. Lucky for you, my family history of mental illness, aka straight-up insanity, made sure I didn't turn out to be nauseatingly perfect, but that's a different story for a different day. So after an amazing week with my mom, it took only four nights of just Zach and I caring for this new creature, or as we lovingly refer to it, trying to keep a real-life Tamagotchi
Starting point is 00:21:33 alive for our house of cards to collapse. Here's a little rundown of how it went. Solo night one. We fed him every two hours as recommended by the pediatrician, and this angel baby slept peacefully between every feeding. I stared into his eyes during my designated feeding shifts and wondered what everyone was complaining so much about. Sure, I wasn't sleeping through the night anymore, but I had the privilege of waking up to this precious little face. I mean, weren't these the special quiet moments I would remember for the rest of my life? Solo night two. Ford started to get a bit fussier between feedings and took longer to soothe, but in the grand scheme of things, it was still a joy. Sitting in that dark nursery, I sang him the songs that my mom once
Starting point is 00:22:20 sang to me. I took deep breaths and reminded myself how lucky we were. I was conscious to just drink in each moment and enjoy this time because we had waited five whole years for this gift, so there was no taking it for granted. Not to mention, I didn't deliver this child and I wasn't breastfeeding him, so who the hell was I to complain? Solo night three. Okay, the wheels were maybe getting a little loose, but they weren't off the rails just yet. On this night, we maybe weren't our usual cheery selves as we passed each other between shifts. One of us didn't voluntarily stay awake anymore during the other parent's shift just to cuddle up and stare at the perfect alien in our arms. There were even a few moments where I pseudo-snapped at Zach because I
Starting point is 00:23:08 couldn't find a burp cloth or pacifier during Ford's little upsets. We had yet to hit meltdown status, thank God, but Zach and I both could sense that things were hanging in the balance. We knew that in an instant, the magical mood in our home could take a hazardous dip. Well, iceberg f***ing ahead. Solo night four. Things were tense. Sleep deprivation was real AF and it was taking its toll on us. In what felt like an instant, we had gone from a lifetime of sweet, uninterrupted eight-hour-plus slumbers to maybe a total of three hours of choppy sleep at night. The thickness in the air was palpable when Zach asked how we wanted to handle the evening ahead. This was the point where we realized there was no easier shift. His feedings were like
Starting point is 00:24:06 sitting through a four-course meal at 11 p.m., 1 a.m., 3 a.m., and 5 a.m. every single night. Each of these feedings would consist of us taking him out of his bassinet after what felt like an eternity of squirming and whining, then heating up the bottle as he screamed and squealed every second that the nipple wasn't in his tiny mouth. Next, we would sit down and inevitably forget a burp cloth, but it was always too late to get up and find one because he was already chugging the bottle like a marathon runner on mile 25. To make matters worse, Ford had started to spit up more after eating, so we had to feed him as upright as possible because of his reflux, which is really easy to do, JK, with a newborn who has no neck muscles and a core made of jelly. Essentially,
Starting point is 00:24:57 I would spend the entire evening covered in dried spit and flop sweat. After the feedings, if he seemed just drowsy enough to brave the bassinet alone, we would finally lay him down. This was when I was supposed to sleep, right? Sleep when baby sleeps? Wrong. Instead of taking advantage of the quiet moments and sleeping myself, I was wide awake with thoughts like, Are all these devices and gadgets we are using to monitor him actually just creating a brain tumor in his little head from all the Bluetooth technology? Or if this baby chokes on his vomit,
Starting point is 00:25:34 will I remember the CPR I learned from the $300 course I took? And as soon as I could calm my thoughts and start to nod off to sleep, the pattern would start again. Mr. Boss Baby was awake, and I'd better not fuck this up. the cycle went on and on and on. It was during one of Zach's shifts when I realized we had become a newborn parenting meme. I heard some banging around in the kitchen, followed by many exasperated breaths, and finally a grand slam of the door that goes out to the garage. I paused, took a beat, and for a moment thought to myself,
Starting point is 00:26:19 and this is what people mean when people say their dad left to pick up cigarettes and never came home had ford and i pushed zach to his limit and he had finally broke it turns out you can't run the bottle sterilizer bottle warmer baby formula dispenser machine and all the other bullshit we had in our kitchen at the same time because it would trip the circuit breaker so zach wasn't leaving us. He was simply going out to the garage to turn the power back on. Hallelujah. Honestly, it serves us right for being too lazy to do anything manually when it came to feeding and caring for our precious child. So yeah, it took me only four days of parenting to realize I shouldn't have spent years internally rolling my eyes every time a mom friend warned me about how I wouldn't
Starting point is 00:27:11 sleep again, or how Zach and I would be at each other's throats over the tiniest things in the first couple of weeks, or months, or years of parenting? I can't believe there was ever a time I assumed I'd be superior or more superhuman than all the other women of the world who raise children. But I consider myself a quick study. This arrogant and smug new mom may have learned her lesson the hard way, but thank God the learning curve was steep. This episode of Lady Gang is brought to you by Nutrafol. Starting point is 00:29:54 and we i threw out like two terrible ideas i wish we had them actually in front of me um i'm sure she remembers but she was like what about built ford tough and i was like yes yes yes yes it is genius yes so good it probably won't be the first or the last time that i use for like use his name in this kind of connotation or whatever um so yeah i obviously felt like i've got this under control i didn't have to like give birth i didn't carry him i'm not breastfeeding. Like this is going to be chill. This is going to be so chill. And it was in the beginning and everybody just kept being like, get ready. They start to wake up a little bit more each day. They wake up in like a newborn. It's a myth that when they
Starting point is 00:30:43 come home and they're brand new and you bring them, the worst part about that is you're afraid they're going to die at every moment, but they themselves are chill. They don't know that death is just looming over them. Um, one roll over one wrong decision by the parents and they can't even roll that's how tough it is they're so easy um so i was like yeah it's fine and mind you my biggest pet peeve and i am aware of this that i will never do this to someone i cannot handle the like doomsday parents out there who say those things to you where they're like oh just wait just wait till he's crawling just wait till this you think it's easy i'm like why are we doing this to each other just let us get there when we get there so it's very annoying
Starting point is 00:31:32 to me i can't stand it that's why that's a lot of why i haven't shared these types of stories on on instagram is because i hate the dms that come back and it's like unsolicited advice but more than that it's unsolicited like um judging not even it's not even the baby doom it's like baby doom yeah it's doom and it's like oh you think this part's hard wait for this i'm like shut the up i'm aware that raising a human is hard like night i've never been like this is gonna be a breeze i thought that moments would be harder than others and as i said in this chapter i did get a little surprised those days after my mom left us in the dust um but yeah there and i'm happy to report that that like these moments like with me and Zach just so tense and him
Starting point is 00:32:22 slamming the door to the garage and me thinking that he's left us forever few and far between um but I I wanted to get very real with everyone that you I this isn't me being a doomsday parent it's just me saying don't feel bad I also had a hard time not a shitty time a hard time um so yeah that's that's what this chapter was I think it's it's great that you shared that too though because especially like even like when my mom talks about like when she had me it's just like it's all there wasn't a neg there's never a negative word that comes out of her mouth it was the best day of my life and this and this and that and I'm like I'm sure when you try to remember those things in the past you're just like cutting out all of the trauma and the bad shit that's
Starting point is 00:33:10 going on yeah but like I think as especially anybody that's also a new parent or gonna have a kid or has kids like it's nice to see that especially because you've been given you know so much help with not carrying the kid and with your family and your nanny and stuff and it's like it doesn't matter how much help you get like it's still gonna make you guys butt heads no matter what for sure no I don't I like didn't even remember writing this that's what's so funny is that I wrote this right after he was born and we turn it in and a lot of things happen before we do anything and like before we do the next steps and because we write our own stuff the edits that happen are very minimal so we don't have to approve anything they just sort of happen
Starting point is 00:33:56 and um i i like was in the booth reading this chapter and i i didn't remember writing any of this that's how i know your mom's full of shit because i would have forgotten how hard this time was if I didn't write it and have to read it again, because you do, you block it out because there are so many good moments and there are so many like magical times, um, that you, you kind of save yourself from going through like the, you know, the negative memories. So yeah, it's, it's forever stamped in time. Thanks to the book. That's why I'm really glad. Cause I was kind of against um asking you to do this so early and mother like i was like let's just not like we want becca to stay in the lady gang you know what i mean so i'm like let's not like force her to
Starting point is 00:34:46 write an essay for a book that's going to go everywhere like two weeks after she has a newborn child and i remember reading it when you turned it in and i was like i love this so much because it reads like a journal entry you know what i mean and you'll be able to look back on that when he's you know six and 10 and 15 and 20 like all these things and be like this is how i felt right at the top and i don't think many new moms probably have i mean you know you keep a baby book but that's all outwardly like you're you know you're this long you're this thing like i don't know that that many new moms stop at the two week mark and write a huge journal entry of like exactly what they're feeling at that moment and i think it's like a very fresh take very like interesting
Starting point is 00:35:28 read and I remember reading it and being like oh wow like I don't know you're Becca's such a cool person that she's like pretty calm and cool I mean not in the last two months but like you know just generally like a very calm person and does it takes a lot to get her flustered and to have you write this and it be so real and raw I just know I think I'm just really proud of you and I'm so glad you shared it with everyone in the book and um and the other things that you shared in the book are pretty raw too like when becca gets an assignment she she she understood the assignment yes um well and i think that the the other thing that i wish i could have written about is that it was later and because if there's any people out there that are going through this current
Starting point is 00:36:17 like meltdown every night or current anything um just new motherhood in general those first like six weeks are just crazy. There is, there is like light at the end of it. I think what people didn't tell me when they were doomsdaying me was that once you find your groove in those first six weeks, that's like parenting bootcamp. Yes. They go through phases later and listen, I'm only five months in, I'm talking about baby, like in the first year. Yeah. That's like the bootcamp of just the rest of the time, because now even as things shift and as he gets bigger and as he's rolling over and he's doing all these things, I'm equipped. So it's not going through all of that all over again. Do you know what I mean? It's not the like starting from scratch. It's practically
Starting point is 00:37:07 like a new baby. Like you find your groove in the, in that time and it's different for everyone, but that's the other part of it that I found really like surprising and positive about this time because everyone in their doomsday, I would have thought that every phase was going to feel like those first two weeks. And I was like, I'm never going to make it granted other times in his life. I'm sure I'm going to feel that way, but not every time. Well, and it's like, you're obviously getting to know this little ball of mush too. Like when you're thrown into it, when they're first born, whether you carry it or not, it's like, you don't know what this thing, you don't know stranger to you. Like, so, and you don't know what it, what it is to be a mom either.
Starting point is 00:37:48 So I'm sure as it's going, you're going through and you're bonding with your child and you're learning how to be a mom. Like, of course, things are going to come more innately than they will in the beginning. So that makes a lot of sense. Well, Becca, it's your day.
