Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which means it's going to be awesome. Well, what is this? Welcome to the Lady Gang. That's amazing. Say that again. The Lady Gang. Things are about to change around here.
Starting point is 00:00:17 Each week we catch up with Hollywood's hottest girl posse, Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang. I am Becca Tobin. You're with Jack Vanek and Kelty Knight. We're off to a great start today. It's been a rocky start. We didn't know how to plug in the podcasting machine.
Starting point is 00:00:34 It's only been three and a half years. You know, it's kind of our first time. You guys, before you got here, I went and I laid on the ground for like 45 minutes and just put my face in the grass. Like probably in Callie's dog shit. Yeah, in the grass here. I just needed to give up on life for a minute. I put my sweater over my head and just sat in the grass. Did people ask you if you were okay?
Starting point is 00:00:56 I thought for a second I heard the security guard come by to be like, is this person dead? But I was alive. I have a feeling that somebody probably took a picture and you will be a meme soon. Oh. So. Yeah. Like, same. It'll be like, Monday, am I right?
Starting point is 00:01:10 Mondays, baby. Just like when you're like floating around and you're like, I have so much to do. Like, I should be so used to this by now. That's what I'm always surprised at. I know. like it's been years now of like us doing this and like having so much going on also like you don't know how to survive not doing this so i know the meltdowns are it's like it's just part of it and then like i just was it's kevin's birthday today so i was eating a piece of cake
Starting point is 00:01:39 like i know that's not gonna go well now my whole stomach is like like why did i eat a piece of cake i don't know but that cake looked really good was that funfetti yeah can i have a piece is there There's a little bit left on my desk. All right. I'll have your leftovers. And I have, like, the blue, like, that teal icing. It's, like, that buttercream. I have a funshetty cake.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Oh, I kind of feel like I'm going to throw up. But, like, God, I don't know. I guess it was worth it. I'm going to finish it. Well, if I have explosive diarrhea during KD, it'll be so embarrassing. But also, like, you'll know why. That's true. Well, now it's time for...
Starting point is 00:02:08 Good week. Yes, it is. Bad week. Oh, no. I'm going to start because that just leads a really good segue into my bad week. Okay. So, I was just traveling. And when I travel, I can never be regular ever, ever your poop.
Starting point is 00:02:24 And I was on tour bus. Can't go poop on tour bus. So it just adds another layer to like the stress, you know, my normal routine when I wake up in the morning. So last night I took a smooth move as one does. And you know, so by the way, we usually podcast in the afternoon. Sure. Right now for Katie podcasting in the morning, eight 30 in the morning, I have an hour and
Starting point is 00:02:47 a half commute in the morning. I'd wake up super early. That was the dumbest thing you've ever done. Took smooth move tea. Hit me at like 6.30. No. I didn't know if I was going to make it, you guys. Is that why you're late?
Starting point is 00:02:58 Yes. Because I was in the bathroom until the second that I left, just hoping to God that I'd be able to make my drive. That was poor planning, Jack. You know what? But I had to do it. I always have to reset myself because there's just junk garbage sitting in my stomach. You could have waited until tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:11 I know. But you know what? I couldn't. The constipation was not letting me go. That's real. Anyways, so that was my bad week. I wasn't really even going to talk about it, but it was a good segue. My good week, I haven't gone to a lot of concerts recently.
Starting point is 00:03:25 And my whole, like, identity is built. Your whole life, you live at the main concerts. Well, mine is Jared's. Okay, got it. But I don't go to any, like, real ones. Okay. We were just at Backstreet Boys. Other than the Backstreet Boys.
Starting point is 00:03:37 And Stagecoach and Coachella. Okay, moving on. Kelty, what's your good week? Are you insane? Have you lost your mind? No, I haven't bought a ticket and gone to a concert in a very long time. I'll go to festivals, but I won't be like, you know what? Mumford & Sons is in town.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I would really like to go see them and make a night out of it. But when I was in Nashville, I went to go see the 1975, and they were so f***ing good. Like, I have not been so impressed by a concert in like 10 years. Well, don't say that if Jared's listening. Well, I mean, he agrees. He's like, I wish that we were, number one, this big. number two had the money to have any sort of a stage setup or lights or fog but it was good it was so good like i highly recommend anybody going to see them like they did such a good job
Starting point is 00:04:24 with every single part of it they're such good musicians and i had a bust and guess who i saw there our mutual ex-boyfriend no oh your new favorite person that i've made out with in my life shay from dan and shay when i drink tequila had a little had a little run-in with shay and his wife was it awkward no were you like did you hear me talking about making out with you on the podcast i'm like i hope to god you don't none of his girlfriend's friends listen to her podcast and they're like uh jack's kind of crazy and i'm like we could really use that tequila okay and i did take a shot of tequila you know just for us for good times okay my bad week it's a real downer bad week oh god so i don't even know these two actors but a friend of mine worked on a movie
Starting point is 00:05:15 with these two actors recently i name names i can't because this friend of mine was like yeah and they are both having an affair oh with each other and i was like were they married and he's like yeah actually newly like i guess one of the people's were was actually newly married and i fell in a k-hole of these two people that i don't know their instagrams and i was furious because the thing that made me the most upset is i know when they were working together and when set affair went on and within that time neither one of them posted pictures of the other no worse they posted pictures of each other i posted a picture of his wife a little cute shot and like some sweet message and i'm like this is why if zach ever posts a picture for no reason it's not my birthday
Starting point is 00:06:05 or anniversary he cheated on me you always know like i have a friend and him and his girlfriend have a rocky relationship and anytime he posts something being like you're my rock I'm like this is in the dog house I'm like there's only one reason any guy posts a lovey picture guilt yeah that's it
Starting point is 00:06:28 wow oh I can't wait to find out who this is after we're done recording it's not it's it's but it's upsetting to me I'm like god gross it's gross yeah how can you live with yourself you terrible people I know terrible people anyways So that was my bad week.
Starting point is 00:06:43 But on a good note, Zach and I just booked our summer trip. We're planning our Spain trip. Hell yeah. And I'm very excited. If anybody has, you know, recommendations, I probably won't take them. But send them my way. Send them your way. I'm so excited for you to take a vacation.
Starting point is 00:07:00 We deserve a vacation. We do, right? I was supposed to be on one now, but we're writing a book. Oh, my gosh. She's never, never going to leave me. Never. Dick. Okay, good week for me.
Starting point is 00:07:09 I tried a new manicure type hot wax no the dip oh no you I've isn't the dip just gel let me can I just tell my story so I had for the Met Gala I did an acrylic tip plus the dip for the first time dip then the acrylic tip started breaking off and it was just like the long nail underneath that had grown out like a long really weak yeah a weak bendy nail yes exactly So before I could bite them all off Or like break them off I went and got them dipped And look at how beautiful they are
Starting point is 00:07:44 Is it just gel though? That's just No it's just the dip powder No gel Where'd you dip them? What's a dip? Nail garden What's a dip?
Starting point is 00:07:51 The dip is when they put the stuff on And then they put Dip your finger in the Is it faster than a regular gel? In the powder It's like a Yeah it's a little bit faster But I just think it looks so natural and beautiful
Starting point is 00:07:59 I like that color How do you take them off? I don't know yet This is my first time Okay please keep me posted Yeah let us know if it's the ingredients I actually came up with the life hack of a lifetime for nails. Yes. What? Sorry to interrupt, but my thumbnail gel was peeling
Starting point is 00:08:15 off. So I went ahead and just ripped it off in the car on my way to the manicure. But as I was soaking off my gel, I realized that's the key to success because I had one thumbnail free without aluminum foil on it. So I could still use my phone. I honestly, it's like the biggest champagne problem ever but i hate getting a manicure because i can't i just sit i'm like oh it's the worst i just think and you look watch whatever garbage show it's usually on the e-network and five minutes feels like five hours and then i always get like really important phone calls that i'm like trying to answer with my thumbnail out that's smart all right my bad week is a story that i told on our tv show but it never aired so i'm stealing it back um i recently did a
Starting point is 00:09:01 nutritionist's test thing and i had to scoop my own poop it never aired but basically what you have to do is you have to collect your own poop sample and so they give you one of those baskets that you get at like a dodgers game where the hot dog comes in it's paper like a paper cup but it's like a paper log thing and you collect the log of poop on this paper thing and then what they do we definitely know that guy he's an actor yeah from best in show best in show yeah anyway should you be the guest on the podcast anyway uh so then they give you a tiny spoon and because there's different levels you have to like go from front middle and back have you done it before i have you have to scoop a little bit of the front of the poop a mid log and a back you know it's
Starting point is 00:09:42 not all the same consistency all the same consistency or color it's disgusting so then you mix it all together it's and then there's like a liquid you have to put it and you shake I put it in the mail, and I was just like, this is... And then you have to ship it on off. Ship it on off to be taken care of. Anyway, it was revolting, and I can never have children. Okay, that's it. Goodbye.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Coming up, Lady Lowe's talks about flying with babies. You're listening to The Lady Gang. Our guest today is one of the most scandalous women we've ever seen on television, working for the best at Olivia Pope and Associates, this heartless female lawyer slash murderer could chop up a body and make you forget it even happened with her likability and charm. Her motto, it's only illegal if you get caught, truly goes against all of my rule-following ways,
Starting point is 00:10:33 but she makes me want to go rogue. She's been the voice of some iconic Disney characters in Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia, and Frozen, and has even dominated the Broadway stage with her performance in Waitress. She's also a fellow podcaster with her show Katie's Crib. All of our moms, go listen to it. And when she isn't playing a badass woman on TV, she's a badass mom and wife in real life she truly does it all please welcome to the show
Starting point is 00:10:55 katie lowes wow can i take you around with me yes you're like the hype woman of the century just like i need this up a little bit we're fixing my mic people no and i do want to add in a new caveat to this intro she showed up in a matching athleisure wear outfit gold you know the hell ever matches the sports bra to the pant listen i do but i don't work out i just do it so people can it's a fashion yeah it's a fashion thing yeah um i love this outfit like so much it looks like splattered pink paint on black workout pants but this is like not a thing around the rest of the country it's only in la that you wear workout clothes all day like yeah to run errands it's not right well right it's not right i love it look i'm a daily user but like
Starting point is 00:11:40 but at least you have the excuse that you worked out this morning i did i'm coming from my workout from eight at eight that was eight what did you do for your workout couldn't i have a personal trainer no you don't i do so hollywood i am you guys it is a full boat of la la land up in my life right now um no i i you know i really struggled i have a year and a half month old baby and i had a damn good time when i was pregnant i had a damn good time the first year of his life jessica yeah i just like really didn't give a crap and i was fortunate enough to be pregnant on a television show where my boss is the most glorious woman shonda rhimes and i just felt really taken care of and really supported and got to like experience my pregnancy and eat like fat burger on the
Starting point is 00:12:26 regular oh yeah um it was delicious um and so now i'm back out there and gonna be back on camera and was like oh let's um reel this thing in like fat burger not twice a day every day yeah yeah just reels it in and so i found this dude named simon carter he's my best friend because he's the only person i see every day i love him so much my best friend has he become your therapist as well yeah he is like a preacher vegan like just wizard of gene he's just really tough and yells at me and he's wonderful and i love him very much and now i'm completely obsessed and i go all the time and i have a ton of friends there and it's a blast and i haven't enjoyed working out in a very long time which is a cool and it's not about it's not about for me it's not like losing weight and getting
Starting point is 00:13:21 it's like being strong and being able to lift my kid that i had a kid later in life and i don't want my back to go out and i now that i'm like i never want to die because i just want to see my child all the time so if i could have done something like there are people there in my workout class that are much older and they're like your future you is thanking you your future you so i think about things in terms of like i just really want to be healthy and stick around for a while and see my kid do some cool shit nice how old were you when you had him 36 okay which isn't that's not by la standards but like iowa standards oh yeah they're like you should be dead by now yeah like i think that's you should be a grandma yeah that's like old la and also
Starting point is 00:14:03 when you watch american idol are you having a heart attack i am because the mothers of the people competing look our age are younger than me like it's no they have great grandmothers that are our age that's what i mean my friends from high school have kids that are in high school and i was like yeah so do my like could not feel older i'm super glad i waited i think you know i'm an actor i'm married to an actor we were able to like pay rent much later in life like you know what i mean right right sure i just think our 20s were like i was waitressing and babysitting and catering and nannying and assisting and all that stuff and i and i was really selfish and in a, in a, in a, in a healthy way of like, I just was really passionate
Starting point is 00:14:48 about wanting to be an actor and, and figuring out who I was. And I just don't think I was ready. Um, and it wasn't until scandal really happened that I learned to figure out that I was like, I was going to be okay. And I was going to have health insurance and then I could like maybe get pregnant in a few years. Um, everyone talks about it and you did already today about shonda and like just the magical what what did you learn from her that you like take in your life like when you hear like the shonda voice like in your back all the time all the time she about motherhood i always think about you know when people ask that horrific question how do you do it all and shonda's like you don't um any day that i'm kicking ass as a mom
Starting point is 00:15:33 is a day that I'm failing as a showrunner because it means like the day that I don't hand in a script on time is because I was at my kid's piano recital or the day that I'm staying late working is the day that I'm not putting my kid to bed so I just don't think it's a realistic expectation we put on ourselves and so I sort of take it like okay today I like totally kicked butt in the mom department and I just really was the struggle bus when it came to my career and moving ahead you know but um so i hear her say that stuff all the time in my head um she she's just the most like you really feel empowered when you work there to use your voice and to speak up if something is making you feel a certain way or you're unhappy like she's really and she really takes care of
Starting point is 00:16:22 mom's pregnant women when your child comes out of you the child is taken care of i mean just things that are like that yeah like i got pregnant and she built like a whole um deck outside of my trailer because it was they didn't like that the trailer stairs were like dangerous or in shondaland there's like a kid's playroom where like the kids come and play carrie's kids viola davis's kids like oh my god her kids my kids like there's like a playroom that has like toys in an app area and like it's just gorgeous and my kid was allowed to come all the time um breastfeeding completely you know but this is the motherhood sector but she's just really she's just a very very supportive and she encourages you to have like a full life do you know what i mean like
Starting point is 00:17:04 she gets really mad if you send an email like past 7 p.m wow oh my god oh my god don't tell me that she's very very i'm better i'm getting better you are getting better she's very good at boundaries and understanding that like if if the people that work for her are going to work really really hard they're going to do so from nine to seven and they're also going to live full wholehearted lives past 7 p.m and on weekends they also need vacation like you know so she's just she's just wonderful she's um the patron of the arts is her title i have a theater company in la called i am a theater company i started 11 years ago with a bunch of unemployed actors i went to college with we all moved to la we were working in the same restaurant we were like what the hell
Starting point is 00:17:43 are we doing with our lives we started a theater company but like example shonda comes to those shows she now very generously gives and supports financially um and she does that for a lot of the people on her show she supports their causes um she wants you to have a voice to use it to do good in the world um and it's sort of like working in utopia so i don't it was crazy when i was working the whole remember the academy awards it was like everyone being nominated was white and it was like such a yeah just a bummer and nightmare and and i remember being on the red carpet at the sag awards and things like that people were like asking what do you think and i was like it's so weird because i work in a place that like just i don't see this every day yeah like there are people in powerful
Starting point is 00:18:27 positions that are all different ages all different colors all different backgrounds all you know women men so i just she's sort of built this incredible empire that's like um heavenly well Don't go work anywhere else. I know. You look like a little bull. You're so scared out. Wait, is that what you're doing? Job with her?
Starting point is 00:18:46 I'm not saying anything. Okay. But I... Would you work with her again? I would literally be waitress number five. I would be her assistant. I would be waitress number five in any show for the rest of my life. I also developed a show with her.
Starting point is 00:19:01 It didn't end up... We made a pilot at ABC. Or we sold the pilot. It didn't get made. But I've worked with her on the development side, too. She's just incredible. and she's a wonderful mom and and but she's also very upfront about when she fails do you know what i mean like she's very real but but we always say like you you have if you're not failing then
Starting point is 00:19:21 you're not winning yes like did you not watch the brené brown netflix oh my god you're not in the ring if you're not in the ring and you're not risking it guys like i have a question did you have i know that scandal like it ended you know it's it hasn't been a bunch of years but did you go through one i think one yeah it's like i feel like we just went through that but do you feel like it's been hard to get more jobs because people are like oh you were quinn no wait you're quinn right yeah i mean i watched all the episodes i just like didn't want to know please oh please it's also been a year ago and it's like what it's like out of sight of the mountain but no yes it's like becca becca we're like after glee it was different though like playing a cheerleader
Starting point is 00:20:01 bouncing around singing and dancing it's way more like people to like hire you as a detective i sort of think over the eight years i think um quinn got to do a lot of things yeah it wasn't one thing your character was so dynamic yes and i also think that's sort of thank you that's also the thing i think when you get cast on a show and you're on a show for eight years i think you do the same thing for eight years on a lot of shows and i think the difference here is that i you started as like a naive little baby and then i started like pulling people's finger i had a ton of sex scenes and then i took over olivia pope and associates yeah the issue i come up against is comedy because i love comedy and i do a lot of talk shows and i love it love it love it and i
Starting point is 00:20:42 have a theater company and i do a lot of comedy there and a lot of you know one acts and funny people don't see you as that no so that's the stuff where it's like i literally guys i don't think i have like a single comedy on my resume that is like that's all i want it's just filled with like tears and like rape of the characters and like getting punched and beat up like it's that kind of thing so that's the sort of stuff that we fight where
Starting point is 00:21:05 we send like all my talk show tape and they're like we swear she's like can do it but then once you get that role then it'll probably no one wants to pop my cherry anyone listening you know again if you hire me yeah like available at some point whatever do you enjoy the Kelly
Starting point is 00:21:21 Ripa stint stand-in job do you crush it you're really cute and likable but also smart yeah i thank you yeah that's really nice i sort of fell into it i don't know i was in new york doing waitress they had me on as a guest i had done it as a scandal press stuff and they were like do you want to come back next week like kelly's out and you're living in new york right now doing waitress and i was like sure i came back and ryan and i really get along yeah i'm a huge fan he got me through some real dark shit in my 20s that sounds so weird i did not like personally no like was he like with a barricade idol or kardashian tour like no like or ryan's roses wait like carl kelly
Starting point is 00:22:02 clarkson helped you with some songs and like he helped discover kelly clarkson like where is the connection six degrees of separation of how ryan seacrest saved your life i used to cater he did guys i used to sob to this man um but how this is so insane and stupid but i used to deliver breakfast setups for photo shoots at like five o'clock in the morning for like huge actresses if they were doing or actors whatever if they were doing the cover of like some amazing photo shoot like brian adams is shooting like the new guest campaign and it has some fancy person whatever i used to bring their fancy ass vegan breakfast setup and i'd put the coffees and the espressos and like the like vegan quiches and like whatever the hell and that would be 5 a.m and then
Starting point is 00:22:45 right from there i'd go to a babysitting job for 10 hours and then at night i would come home watch american idol but at 5 a.m i would drive and i would listen to ryan seacrest on kiss fm oh yeah and then i would work all day and i'd meet up with ryan at night when he was hosting and i would say to myself this mother effer is the hardest working man in show business and if i want to get out of this cycle i'm in and keep pushing and hustling i better be prepared to work as hard as this man because so he really got me through some i mean i remember dropping off breakfast behind the wheel of a car just sobbing listen to ryan's roses and like how cool of a full circle moment is that then for you oh yeah so i met him i told him that the first second
Starting point is 00:23:25 i met him i think he was moved i don't know um and now i think i've hosted like eight or nine times basically anytime kelly has vacation or he's got to go take her girls like visit colleges or whatever like ryan's like get loads in here and it's a beautiful mom break because they fly me first class this is so amazing i go to new york for two nights which is the perfect amount of time to be away from my son i night three is when i start to like lose my shit yeah i'm away for two nights i see broadway shows i go out some dinners i see some friends and i come back first class and i sleep the entire six hours it's a dream it's a dream it's a dream and i hang out with secret and this last time my parents came oh and i ran out and they were sobbing because not
Starting point is 00:24:06 only that but i'm a new yorker so like i grew up on that show like sure they still call it regis i can't tell you everyone in my family is like you was so great on regis and i'm like guys it has been so many people since regis it's insane like it's been a lot of different people um so it's yes it's been a very beautiful full circle moment and like what a great gig i mean literally she's living the dream it's like an hour dude that's from nine to ten she gets ready eight to nine she's done and yeah i think they're making a dang killing yeah then she works of course they're making a killer they're making a killing yeah like she's crushing i've heard rumors about the salary i don't know what it is but i bet we could google it yeah i'm sure it's
Starting point is 00:24:48 a ton it's probably like what 20 million i think it's at 30 at this point for the year i hope you're getting paid i mean a little not like a lot of vacation i get a vacation that's really what it is dude my favorite thing people are like oh my god you travel so much for work I'm like, put me on a plane in a pod with no Wi-Fi. When did they have to put Wi-Fi on planes? I don't want Wi-Fi on a plane. Give me a break. The phones have to be off is what I heard in 1986, and I'm sticking with it.
Starting point is 00:25:18 I agree. I agree. By the way, I just looked it up. If it's $30 million, that's $82,000 a day. Yeah. Damn. That's a lot of work. Probably more because she gets hiatuses.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Right. Oh, no. And then she has, like, a washing machine commercial, too. Yeah. Oh, yeah. She's got brands out the craziness. Brands out the kazoo. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:39 And also, she probably doesn't have to pay, like, for stuff. Like, I'm sure written into her, I mean, I don't know, but I would think written into her contract are, like, the clothes, the workouts, the manicures, the haircuts. Because, like, that's big. Yeah, like, that's part of her job is, like, what she looks like. So, I don't know. It's an incredible gig. Ryan Seacrest is so lovely. um do you feel like when you're talking to him he's there he's present i do wow
Starting point is 00:26:03 otherwise he just doesn't like you what are you talking about no i think sometimes like when you're really busy it's hard to like really like about herself i'm just focused i'm very focused on katie right now as our guest at lady gang i'm not thinking about all the other things we have to do that's what ryan does very hard but like it's i have to say though the people like you like the the people who i've come tell me about me katie well no i just think there are some people like you're looking right through me seacrest oprah ellen shonda these are the people who especially oprah it's like she looks into my eyes and it's all i've never been more soul looked into my whole life and ellen she she has a little
Starting point is 00:26:55 bit of a tough uh uh reputation yeah yeah like i remember the first time going on the show and i was sort of warned by other friends of mine who've gone i'm like hey just so you know like she's not going to come back and like say hello to you beforehand or like be super like you're not going to feel super at home you're not going to feel like so like bubbly like tell me all about your life blah blah blah and i was like um okay like i was glad i to know that but also um i don't know i i love women i respect the shit out of that like i'm like yeah you're busy like you're running a empire there are 3 000 people here whose lives and houses and mortgages and children's education depend on you kicking ass so like you don't have time to ask me how i am or like who made my shirt
Starting point is 00:27:37 like it's just a different thing but when she's on and the show is on it's like she's so right there and i feel like seacrest is like that too right like i just think they're so busy that like the in-between sort of quiet like they're just really good at their job like saving their energy yes yeah which i should probably be better at i'm terrible like i'm just like everyone be my best friend let's have a chat yeah also probably how you fuel yourself like i think right people feel themselves differently that's true my husband is a huge gatherer of energy but the more people the better and i'm like if i do this i need like two nights of freedom completely by myself no one talked to me for sure i'm dead for sure my husband's like we just were with 300 people and
Starting point is 00:28:16 i love it i could go rock off this for five i mean he's nuts yeah he's like the star in the relationship yeah it's like extroverted at our wedding it was unbelievable it was like he was should have put on tap shoes so did my my husband was it shot out of a cannon yep and i was like by 8 p.m ready for to wrap it all up i was like i love you all thank you i remember you being on the dance floor and you're like and we're dancing and you're like is it over yet literally it was like eight o'clock at the dj booth like throwing out like dollars i have a question for you about please from actor to motherhood thing please did you feel like honestly was it so hard going from being like this one woman show
Starting point is 00:28:59 like carrying yourself hustling hustling hustling to then being responsible for this little human while also hustling well and hustling like i think it goes through a bunch of different things at first i had i didn't have i kind of i had postpartum blues is what i would call it meaning like i was super upset that i had i was not connected to him at all okay the first like six weeks but i if it had gone longer i definitely would have gone on medication but it sort of lifted at week six um so at first i was like what the hell did i do to my life this is a terrible terrible thing that i have done um did you plan to have your kid yes okay and i was it was not great um at the beginning and then all of a sudden you i fell so hard in love and someone actually
Starting point is 00:29:47 said this to me i can't remember who which i found very helpful but someone said you know it's like falling in love some people meet their baby and it's love at first sight and some people meet their baby and it's a really slow burn and mine was a really slow burn same with my husband maybe that's just the way i do things yeah but i um i then felt so um relieved that i wasn't the center of my own world anymore to be completely honest like it's a real um and some people might listen to that and be like yeah that's just not for me or or somebody might listen that and be like wow it feels refreshing and maybe that was because I was
Starting point is 00:30:23 36 when I got Adam and I had already spent 36 years being the center of my world you know and it just feels and like yeah my husband too but like not really sure sure sure like I say I would throw myself
Starting point is 00:30:39 in front of traffic for Adam but like no but like I know I think I would but like I know I would for my son like I'm very well aware that his life is 100% ahead of mine at this point yeah and it feels sometimes now he's a year and a half so what i'm saying okay first no super upset terrible transition nightmare nightmare nightmare nightmare then i fell in love and i started to be able to like handle it all and quality became over
Starting point is 00:31:05 quantity meaning like the things that used to take me all day to do because i only knew i had an hour of him sleeping to get shit done it was mind-blowing to me what i could get done in a small amount of time. And then it felt refreshing and relieving to have something be more important than things, especially in today's world. Like I would get so upset going down these Twitter spirals of the state of our country. And then I would just look at my son and I'd be like, well, we're putting the phone away. I didn't book that job. I don't like, let's go to the park and you're present and you're in the moment. So that felt very refreshing. And now I'm just starting to feel like myself again. I would say it took a year and a half. And I think that's pretty common
Starting point is 00:31:42 to other moms i talk about talk to is that at about a year and a half you start to remember like my old self is creeping in again where i'm juggling better like um hustling and and like why am i so emotional this is so inspiring oh you're so i'm like really like are you all right i don't know do you think you're menopausal i don't know probably do you think you want to have a kid that was really beautiful katie like i appreciate your honesty i do too yeah because it's like everyone's like oh my god it's the greatest thing ever and you're like no i had to figure it was really hard and it's still going to be continue to be really hard i mean it's not like i i don't know what i'm doing ah you know i'm trying to make like a a loving human who's
Starting point is 00:32:26 in some way shape form going to be like a good person it's a lot that's scary and i don't know the whole thing is really crazy i'm i'm so glad i did it it was the hardest thing i ever did breastfeeding was the hardest thing i've ever done in my entire life i've never worked harder I worked harder at that than I did in my acting career, and that was really bad, too. Yeah. I mean, the friend that we have in common, Kat. I'm sure she wouldn't have it. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I know her whole breastfeeding journey. Bye-bye, like, nipples, bye. Mine are gone. They're just disgusting. She was sobbing. It was a bloody mess. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then eventually she just had to pump every day instead of breastfeeding.
Starting point is 00:32:59 For forever. For a year. Yeah, and her pump sessions were like 30 minutes or something. Unbelievable. I've never heard of anything like that. Yeah, it's a real commitment. But I'm really glad I did it. I'm really glad to be figuring out, like, who I am now.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I don't know who that is. Like, I don't know. Because you do lose a little bit. Like, I do feel like my drive has shifted to what it was in my 20s. And there's a part of me that's really excited by that. and there's a part of me that feels like it's different but in some ways um i'll tell you my my acting got better really really wow i remember and it's cool that i was able to experience it because some people aren't on shows when they have babies but i went back to work when he was
Starting point is 00:33:50 eight weeks old and i remember talking to carrie washington she was like how deep is your well right now like because it takes you two seconds to get there yeah like there's no warm-up needed you have no time you're so used to just tapping in very quickly as a mom like you're just so connected to some sort of human flow it's probably gone now i bet my acting's garbage at this point but at the time it was so strong like and your instincts are so strong and you're able to like get emotional so quickly and you're just like i don't know it's like a whole other thing that's the other carrie was an amazing inspiration on that show because she had two babies on that show all those coats and all those bags
Starting point is 00:34:28 hiding her stomach hiding big Prada bags huge top handle Prada luggage my favorite episodes of Will and Grace are when they hid Debra Messing's belly
Starting point is 00:34:42 she had twins too she was very big they had to use couches to hide her belly I love it I love watching that stuff my character was pregnant thank god because there would have been no way in hell it's like when they yeah how do you hide your like it's incredible i just feel like i just get so puffy you some people do so you don't you
Starting point is 00:35:02 don't know like you don't know you know yes my ankles were like oh i was disgusted like no shots of my feet if you're trying to hide my but you know what's funny i thought i looked cute and it's only now like i was like oh like adam my husband i was like we should do like a naked photo shoot because it's so incredible to know what my body has done yeah like how freaking cool just for he and i i mean no one will ever see these photos but like i was like i just together no he had the camera i had just like an open robe with like a little nip slip oh i love that showing my belly yeah because i was like in 50 years i would like to look back and be like holy crap like my body did that that's crazy so i thought i looked so cute i look back on some
Starting point is 00:35:47 those photos i was like oh my god i was not a cute pregnant person but that's all right who cares not everyone can be you know those people who have like just they look the same from the back and by the side you're like wow you're pregnant i had no idea that was not my story also go yourself yeah also it was just yourself that was not my story at all nobody likes a thin pregnant person no it's not it's like the worst are the people who get thinner after after yeah that was not oh my god it's all the breastfeeding it's all the bread not my story either not my story either thank you sucks the light also the bad the i'm gonna tell you guys another thing this stupid hallmark or idea of a baby moon is so dumb i don't maybe that's just an la new york
Starting point is 00:36:26 thing for people who are no i think it's such a baby moon is thing it's you know it's like your last vacation you go on before you have the baby so like you and your husband can be together okay it's a nightmare you can't drink yeah wait yeah sex is terrible yeah you feel like shit in a bathing suit you feel like crap in a bathing suit are you supposed to go like right before you have the baby like you go like six months seven months like something like that it's so stupid and a waste of money i did one nightmare this is where i was thinking about when i thought i looked cute because i look at those bathing suit photos i was like in a string bikini it was disgusting oh my god to hawaii but the other thing was that was so bad about it was so hot and humid out and i
Starting point is 00:37:01 had adam my husband had to go to a store and get astro glide oh no that's a lube he had to get glide for runners to put in between my inner thighs because i had burns on my inner thighs from walking gaining 40 pounds and like my thighs touching in a humid location such that is hawaii so that was not romantic the sex was not great i couldn't drink and you spend money it's not worth it here's where the trip is great take your kid before he starts walking i felt like i had a honeymoon we took my son away when he was seven months old and they're just sleeping all the time anyway and they can be in a stroller all day long and they take stroller naps and if you're breastfeeding like that's very easy to fly with it was so romantic to like have
Starting point is 00:37:52 our little baby and we would like nap when he napped all day and then if he woke up at four o'clock in the morning because he would jet lag we would walk we were in spain we would walk around the city in the morning when no one else was up and like get breakfast then go back to the hotel and sleep all day it was wonderful to spain yeah that's a long flight great breastfeed breast if you breastfeed on flying look whether or not you're into breastfeeding like i you guys choose whatever is right for you and your body and your baby i was not breastfed and i think i'm great so whatever um but i really wanted to do it because i'm really a hippie and i was fascinated by the whole thing um but if you breastfeed on planes it's really really yeah the baby cries makes a
Starting point is 00:38:29 sound you just stick them back on your tit it's over and the baby just sleeps and eats and sleeps and eats as long as it's before walking as soon as your baby is walking moving crawling flying sucks that sucks you have to like walk them around the plane we do it all the time my son my son's taking his like 25th flight like next week he flies all the time it's horrible it's the most exhausting painful the only thing i can think about is that i must walk 15 000 steps on the flight because i'm up and down for four hours and then he's probably i also have a boy i have friends who have girls or maybe less active babies who are cool just sitting and like watching a show like that's not my kid my kid is a energy ball wants to play soccer like he just wants to walk
Starting point is 00:39:12 up and down he's he's like he says hi to everybody 50 000 times i know it sounds cute but then do they notice you and then it's like everywhere like we love your show all the time and the other problem is oh god you get really shamed sure if you go first class with a baby so no you know what i have shamed you yeah of course i have shame so i don't fly first class anymore so i'm back there with scandal fans no yeah why don't you go first because i've gotten huge rigmarole almost fisticuff fights with first class passengers why are they oh they're because you're in first class no my son is not crying he's laughing having a great time but they don't want to hear a baby and i say put in your headphones yeah yeah and they say my screen isn't
Starting point is 00:40:00 working and now we're in like a major fisticuffs and it's an insane like my husband we got into it bad i'm i got in so much trouble almost with um not trouble really but i was telling this story to shonda and her sister and they were like all you could have seen was the the you know like the the paparazzi photos and the headlines and one person taking video because my husband and I really got into a fight with the first class passenger who said that my kid, we weren't taking control of my kid and get your kid out of here. And it was really bad. And the flight attendants were on my side. They were all scandal fans. And it was like so intense. And all of a sudden, like 10 people were involved in half of first class was like, we think your kid's being
Starting point is 00:40:39 great. And the other half was like, kids, babies don't belong in first class. So anyway, if you go down a google spiral online there are some people that are very passionate that babies do not belong in first class my husband is so scarred from this experience that we no longer fly first class with the baby so i'm back by the toilets no um and everyone taking photos of me on scandal no i feel so flying crazy and they're like times are tough for katie lowe well i want to let hold on she's struggling yeah i know it's defend myself for a minute katie i have never publicly shamed a baby In your brain, you're doing it. In my brain, I've gotten on a flight and realized, oh, my God, there's a baby directly behind me,
Starting point is 00:41:18 and this is the only six hours of sleep I get because this is an overnight flight, and I have to go straight to the studio tomorrow. And then I go into my little bag that's pre-packed, and I put my earplugs in, and I take a melatonin, and I go to sleep, and you take care of your baby. Like, I have rolled my eyes at a baby in first class, but I would never publicly be like, get your kid together. I'm not a devil. Yes.
Starting point is 00:41:40 No. You have a soul. you're an m you have empathy honestly you're fine if you want to start flying if you whatever you my husband won't i'm telling you this was such a bad experience what about a business a business yeah i don't know i i give you permission now i'm back there with the moms and this this shit show and to be honest it's where i belong i i don't think you found your place i belong in first class when you're alone work and someone's paying for me to do that but Like, when I'm with the family, it's like, we have flown a lot, the Scandal cast together.
Starting point is 00:42:12 We take vacations together, things like that. And we're all in the, me, Foley, Bellamy, Jeff Perry, we're all back there. I kind of love that. We're just like, you know, I don't know. You're not in your seat anyway. Well, with the baby, I'm not in my seat anyway. So, and I never even turn on the television. It's just a disaster.
Starting point is 00:42:29 If I'm going to turn on anything, it's going to be on my phone and it's going to be like, he loves just watching an hour and a half video of garbage trucks picking up garbage. oh my god he's gonna be a garbage man he's i would love a lot of money i agree yeah and it's very important our country our world is going under because of garbage is going to be the thing that kills us people oh my god if it's not kids are so much garbage guys my saturdays are spent at la sanitation department parties oh my god has he met like the garbage man excuse me yeah you can find once a month in la all the la sanitation recycling trucks find a parking lot they all line up and you can get to ride in them and go in them and honk the horn and this
Starting point is 00:43:09 is what i did on saturday and i did this three saturdays before my life has completely changed and i even went up to a garbage man and i said how much what would it take for you to pull this garbage truck in front of my house for his second birthday party like i need this garbage truck here and they said i can't do it it's illegal it's illegal it is like a fit you should start a company i know you know that like a lot there's a lot of little boys that like think that garbage there was just garbage is packed yeah don't tell anybody else they're packed fire trucks and garbage trucks are his reason for being someone said something on there's like a meme or something that was like oh great you spent 10 grand to take your kids to disney well i brought my kid to the
Starting point is 00:43:50 front door and he watched the garbage truck for three hours and had more fun my kid loves that stuff i love it so much okay on that note wow katie is gonna fix your life when we come back hey ladies funky ask the lady gang so we're back so this last part of our podcast i drew that it's such beautiful handwriting it's jack's little victory it was for a section on our tv show that never aired we actually never even saw a cut of that we never even saw a cut of it yeah it's my favorite matt nathanson song he writes about like i'll get no one knows who he I know he's a singer songwriter and his song I was sitting here being like am I supposed to know he's also my celebrity crush he was on this podcast I peed my pants a little bit
Starting point is 00:44:36 a little bit like I'll learn to get by on the little victories like not the big things the little things and then I we danced at my wedding to this song as well and so there's just a lot of things do we not think about the Brene Brown special yet again where she says when people have gone through major trauma what they think about are the small things that they miss the most oof god took it to a dark place so let's bring it back katie's gonna now answer your questions i'm skipping our game because we had so much i mean the garbage truck story was so much i mean that's all save that for another time okay so we just have girls writing questions and we try to answer their lives with bad advice oh so okay okay you're ready bad advice or do we give them oh we're
Starting point is 00:45:15 trying to give them good advice but it's not great okay great it's like drink a bottle of wine okay Okay, so first question comes from Grumpy Gills. Grumpy Gills says, I graduated from college about a year ago. I got my dream job right away, and I have been working ever since. I'm in digital marketing, and I love my job. That employees, and there are over 3,000 employees. I work on site five days a week and sit in a cubicle where I am surrounded by a co-worker. I'm a positive person who strives to be the baddest bitch, but these people are slowly dimming my light every single day.
Starting point is 00:45:44 The people I sit by are super negative about everything. i stand up for myself and try to lead them what this sounds like are you there are we dimming your light are you there my god it's me margaret i try to stand up for myself and lead them towards positivity but they put me down for it almost every time yeah these people have worked here for 20 to 30 years she's just adding zeros to that yeah my boss is an is an executive and is remote but is definitely a supportive dude do i tell him about my situation and ask if i can move and get in the office away from these grumpy gills while i sound like a baby am i throwing these people under the bus so basically she likes her
Starting point is 00:46:25 job but she works around a lot of get used to it get used to it the world shall dim your sparkle yeah i think the same and i definitely know that you should like tattletale on that no i don't think that's gonna help unless they're doing something that's like hr this is all i can say you should probably work your ass off and get out of there get promoted and the quickest way It should just drive you to kick ass, to be promoted, to move that way. Well, and the sad reality is you're probably always going to be working around somebody that you don't like. Or somebody that's annoying as fuck. There's going to be somebody around that's not your bestie.
Starting point is 00:47:04 And just don't interact if you don't have to. I think you can very easily create your own world and pick and choose who you interact with. I mean, that's life. Put on some headphones, listen to the Lady Gang, and keep your head down. Keep your head down. Love it. Yeah. Okay, second question comes from Anonymous.
Starting point is 00:47:24 I'm 29 years old and just got married earlier this past spring. I'm enjoying married life, and I do believe that I have found my person, but here's my dilemma. Okay. Fimble dick. I don't feel like that sexual gal that I once was, and I don't want this to harm my marriage. my husband would have sex 10 times a day if i let him and lately it's been one maybe two times a week because of me my initial attraction to my husband was not that immediate physical i want to jump on you kind of feeling i always had in my past relationships and i'm worried that that
Starting point is 00:47:55 could be my problem i just want to get my groove back again and i want to actually have sex with my husband and enjoy it and make him happy please help me in any way and give me some good honest all right ladies oh wow let's have at this here we go here's the good news once a month you get to enjoy it the rest of its business sex in my opinion oh my god yeah sure um i think here's here's a word to the wise you do not want to be in a sexless marriage it's the fastest way for it to end yeah so i'm glad you're writing in i'm glad you're realizing this is an issue because this is um it's no joke like what you're playing around with is no joke i would also empower you to get on it as far as how can you make it fun for you like it's not all about your husband and what
Starting point is 00:48:41 he's able to do is there shit you can bring in like why don't you go on a date to a sex store and get yourself a bunch of vibrators and things that you can bring into the bedroom that excite you um so that you're helping him help you to like have newer different better bigger smaller weirder orgasms and shit things that you look into look up you know because honey you're married like this is going to be a long road. I also don't think it's bad to have sex one or two times a week. Like your husband's going to want to have sex with you. What we were like pulling our girls.
Starting point is 00:49:12 Like there was one of the husbands in our lady gang Facebook group. There was like, uh, my husband wants to have sex four times a day. That's not working with our regular lives. We have jobs. Every guy wants to have sex four times a day. Right.
Starting point is 00:49:22 Like don't feel guilt one or two times a week. Like that's great. I think so. That's great. Yeah. That's totally great. And a great, yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:30 But like you want to enjoy it. I think it's, I think it's right. Like go explore yourself, like find out what gets you off and then transfer to him. He's every guy is going to be like, yeah, great. A dildo or whatever. Like guys are excited by those things. So find something that works for you and bring it in and you'll be stoked.
Starting point is 00:49:45 And as somebody who like was attracted, is attractive to my husband, sometimes I actually have to like step, step back and take myself out of the years of being together and be like, Oh my God. Right. Like, yeah. And your husband's hot. When I watch my husband walk through like a room of people and I see girls check him out and I was like, everyone wants to f*** him.
Starting point is 00:50:08 I should want to f*** him. Here's the good news is that even if you didn't marry the most attractive guy on the planet, at the end of the day, you don't see it anymore. Like, I don't want to jump on my husband the way I want to. Also, it all goes away. It all goes away. No matter how hot you are. And I don't want to jump on my husband.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Like, don't worry. Even if you married the hot guy, you still would lose a little bit of that like excitement. And Oprah had this interview, I will never forget it, where it's, like, the hot sex that you had and, like, those butterflies that you feel, it's actually insecurity. It's actually, like, your body's response to not feeling completely safe and secure. So, like, a lot of times that passion is you're thinking it's passion. It's actually just, like. Trying to prove yourself. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:54 Yeah, I see that. And so you actually don't want to have butterflies for your husband anymore. That's a weird thing. like no butterflies are scary it's scary and like you're unsure nervousness yeah yeah so it's like you're the passion sometimes it doesn't go hand in hand i mean you have to find it and you have to find the ways to find it but you're never gonna have hot sex with your husband like you did the stranger in the bar who you weren't even sure if he liked you or not or you didn't know his name yeah well yeah you know so hot no it doesn't need to be but you could role play and pretend
Starting point is 00:51:21 as that guy i sometimes have to close my eyes and pretend of course everyone does that everyone that's like well come on that was like year seven i'm on year 13 guys oh wow yeah yeah yeah it's amazing though i mean i i'm so yeah like it oh i i i really encourage you to figure out ways for you to grow sexually oh hey oh shit oh okay last question all right last oh god well i told a story the other day about how she had 90 minute sex with her husband sometimes oh my god i don't think i've ever no i don't think anybody 90 minutes of his penis in there okay yeah no 90 minutes of like a session she had to break it down i don't know i broke it down but now i have a uti so oh god what did you say you're
Starting point is 00:52:12 like the first 10 minutes was a was a was a grace sexual correct wow wow i'm impressed she doesn't have children that's how she can do 90 and my husband and i were like ships in the night we hadn't seen each other in a while how long he's basically a stranger now 10 years listen but we have sex like once a month it's good that they're having sex never see each other yeah she just she has to brag about it an hour and a half sex is really good it's really not now my vagina sores i just sit here and i have a uti and i had to go through the old you know where you keep all your old medicine you never finish and i was like was it googling like hydro glycol so i could like fine so like you're like how long does monistat stay good for so maybe it doesn't work do you
Starting point is 00:52:53 need new shit no i feel better this morning but yesterday i was doing that thing where you're like cranberry juice that is the worst and then you pee it's fire of a thousand suns in one drop yeah and then you come back to every girl's come back to work and you're like i have to pee again oh i have to pee again and then it's truly yeah it's the worst feeling fire pee fire pee is no joke all right last question i don't know how this always comes back to my long sex every podcast it's inspiring i it is my god also it like you talk about it so much that like it can't now get off my mind i can't look at you anymore yeah not think about like i don't want to hear it intercourse but then here it is i hope zach never hears that episode he'll be like why
Starting point is 00:53:32 don't we ever do 90 minutes we do 90 seconds and it's like i great no i went home to chris and i was like i have a uti and it's your fault you're not having sex with me for more than four minutes anymore four minutes is the tops and he was like oh my god okay and i was like putting on a timer absolutely no more of this because by the time we got to minute 60 i already had a uti okay anyway 60 no one should get there okay all right next question okay i was gonna ask a follow up question but i'm not going to do not all right last question comes from roland stone i need your advice you have all become very successful in the entertainment world i recently graduated i know i recently graduated and i've been trying to break into the entertainment
Starting point is 00:54:14 industry for a while it's part of what i studied in school and an industry i knew i wanted to be a part of since i was five years old i've written directed produced and more i've walked into tons of company buildings handing out my resume writing specific cover letters sharing my work and still nothing i've managed to find a couple of freelance gigs but not much else how did you guys get your start in this industry and do you have any advice on what i should be doing oh hey i wonder how old this person is and also what's the is the entertainment industry are they a writer actor what is it it doesn't say and it doesn't say i'm assuming they're in la i'm not saying i've written directed produced and more so this is probably like more behind the camera okay yeah
Starting point is 00:54:50 you just have to keep going you just have to do what you're doing and continue to do it and meet as many people as that's what it is because getting that job is like having a bunch of other jobs and then being in the right place at the right time with the right skill set and like but just what you're doing don't let these rejections and this like it's not happening for me like i'm sure every single person at this table like you just do it for like a decade and then you get one teeny little hit and then and three more years later well it was i don't know who said it but exactly right you always talk about the quote it takes 10 years to make an overnight success that's exactly right all the behind work that everybody's doing until that
Starting point is 00:55:28 they've actually made it yep so it's like everybody is hustling their balls off that's exactly right and as many rooms like you don't know what straw is going to break the camel's back like you don't know what is going to be the thing like for example scandal and i know i'm i'm talking about in front of the camera but i do think it's uh you can apply it is that like jeff perry who played cyrus on scandal was my acting teacher when i was 19 his wife linda lowey cast Scandal. She had brought me in probably 15 times in front of Shonda before I booked
Starting point is 00:55:57 Scandal, and I never booked before, but I had a small guest star in Private Practice, and I had a small guest star in Grey's Anatomy five years earlier. Do you know what I mean? And it was like this slow, over 10 years, still getting in front of Shonda every time, but it was because I had known Jeff when I was 19. You know, it's like, you don't
Starting point is 00:56:13 know what that thing is going to be, but you keep going, keep putting your work in front of people, keep going to events, parties, screenings, talkbacks, Anywhere where you can surround yourself in a room with people who are also doing what you're doing, because at some point those people are going to have gigs and jobs and you're going to run into them again and it might work out that they have something for you. So it's like the more people you can collect in your life that inspire you or in doing similar things, I feel like that is also very helpful. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:41 And don't be afraid to ask somebody to like shadow them for the day. Like, people actually get very flattered most of the time and less inconvenienced if, like, you say, I will get your coffee, I will do whatever to make your life easier, if I can just sort of step in for a couple hours or a day or whatever it is to watch you and be around the thing that I'm trying so hard to get to. Because that also makes a big difference. I've seen people go from shadowing a director to, like, show running a show within seven years. So it's very cool. That's exactly right. It's possible. I love it.
Starting point is 00:57:15 All right. On that note, Katie has to go home to her son. Yeah. We have to continue our days. You guys, you can follow. The garbage truck is around the corner. The garbage truck is around the corner. Guys, hurry up.

Starting point is 00:57:41 Is Q your middle name? Yeah. Quinn. Quinn. The character I play on Skittles is my real middle name. And that was not, that wasn't a hint. Coincidental. Such a good name, too.
