Hello. Welcome, welcome, welcome. P.S. I was in an audition this week, and they were like, can you say welcome just once? It's really exciting. and if you're listening to us on an android we love you can always check out the podcast at podcast1.com we're very that was so hard for you it was the android i know because i wanted to act like it's okay that you have green text bubbles but it's not it's not okay guys but i still like everyone you know um p.s we have like almost 6 500 instagram followers i know i think we're growing faster than my instagram grows i think so too for sure the day that lady gang has more
Starting point is 00:01:45 instagram followers with me will be so sad and i think we're gonna do it that's my goal um we're very excited about our guest today because i remember meeting this girl many many years ago when her vocal group pentatonix was playing um on a reality competition show and everyone was like what's gonna happen how on earth is this group with no sounds going to be famous and they have slayed the damn game they have become so popular they've won two grammys and kirsten malden holy shit i don't know how to say your last name maldonado maldonado can you can you cut that in stace focus on the first one maldonado um and we're very excited because kirsten maldonado yes say that three times fast is here from the grammy award winning group pentatonix and she's
Starting point is 00:02:38 so rad you guys and she's always around boys so we're gonna let that girl talk go crazy oh yeah yes so let's kick it off with good week yes it is bad week oh no okay i'm gonna be selfish and start good week bad week oh great rising i never do i don't i always let you start first so my bad week is this i've been talking about my new vegan diet yes yes i was wondering You look amazing. Thank you. Since watching Forks Over Knives, the documentary. But here's my problem.
Starting point is 00:03:12 It's going really well. The cheese sneaks in every once in a while. So it's like sort of vegan. So are you like 90% vegan? I'm probably like 90% vegan and I've had a little bit of fish here and there. So like, yeah. So I'm not like super committed. I never do anything right.
Starting point is 00:03:29 But my problem is this. For all the vegans out there, and Jack, don't answer this because I know you're going to have something rude to say about it. I, I find myself eating so many carbs and I know everybody is sick of hearing us talk about being skinny. This is not about being skinny. This is about being healthy. So before you jump on me, I am talking about like, I want to be eating so many vegetables and fruits and like quinoa, but I don't cook all that much. I do my blue apron vegetarian and meals which are great but it's like for lunch i'm so sick of eating salad yeah so i eat like salad and then like a whole baguette how do i stop doing that that was my problem that's why i gained
Starting point is 00:04:10 weight when i was vegan it's really a bummer carbs are the only thing that fill you up when you're not eating a lot of protein it's true i don't know what i'm gonna do i'll keep you guys posted you look amazing though you really are glowy and i feel like your mood is lightened so i feel like you should oh keep going might be that happy necklace you're happy um good week okay my good week wait so that was your bad week you miss carbs i mean you know i'm eating too many carbs too many carbs bad week okay and i'm having trouble if anybody out there has any helpful suggestions please do let me know my good week is that i bought into the hype i drank the kool-aid and i ordered a charlotte tilbury makeup have you guys heard of this wait is that that really
Starting point is 00:04:51 expensive hold on i'm obsessed it's not what did you get that i got the under eye concealer yeah and the contouring kit the contouring kit is life-changing the film star oh hold on we can't talk about this we can't talk about the contouring kit no we can't talk about can you cut that out okay sorry from the oh i i got the under eye concealer yep and um i basically bought out nordstrom because i was so excited it's the only place you can get it in california so for those you who don't know charlotte tilbury is this mega mega mega probably the most famous uh makeup artist she started with like kate moss she does amal clooney's wedding yeah she's like the makeup artist and normally when makeup artists um i can't talk about this because the fucking fabfit fun
Starting point is 00:05:42 okay okay we were having a lot of oh my god smoother than this we just had that meeting that really fucked us and i chose to talk about cosmetics today which is like the dumbest thing ever okay where should i go from just start it my good week okay so i got the under eye concealer yep i spent a ton of money at north very expensive it's it's it's expensive does it hide all the bags or like i'm telling you i used it and then i had to go to an audition later that day and my manager saw the tape of the audition and he was like what have you been doing you're like well it's not my vegan diet it is the vegan diet it's probably a mixture of the vegan diet but also charlotte tilbury for you guys who don't know is the most famous makeup artist on the planet started with
Starting point is 00:06:28 like kate moss and amal kaluni's wedding so she's like the real deal and i thought i would buy this stuff and be a little bit disappointed however i love it it is amazing she's not sponsoring this podcast we are not important enough for her to do that right we're mere mortals i do wear her lipstick it's called bitch perfect it's my go-to it's amazing so if you guys are near nordstrom like maybe just go pick some up i want to go you'll be beautiful like becca exactly she's not even paying us to say this can you believe that fans can you believe it okay jack go okay guys so my good week she always pulls out her phone jack every time i have to have a reference okay so my good week is i got a dm the other day from uh-oh maddie allard and she informed me that
Starting point is 00:07:18 one of my shirts is being used on the kylie and kendall game what yeah excuse me what's the shirt it's this shirt that i have like a peace sign and it says peace off on it can we then scroll hold on is a real shirt do you get money for that well no of course not well no because i don't have money and they're like bajillionaires yeah they'll chris jenner shut you down so fast so hard yeah she'd be like no you're like a commoner are you kidding me with what money that's pretty cool you're so culturally relevant last week becca was on family guy you're on kylie and kendall yeah nobody knows it's all happening you guys all all i want really is to get a freaking kylie lip kit so whoever if they're listening they follow me somebody on kylie and kendall's team
Starting point is 00:08:04 follows me okay in exchange for using her hell brain property my ip really yeah in your kyle and kendall game we will take three lip kits yes please i don't know what color all of them i don't think i wear enough makeup to wear a lip kit all it is is lip gloss i know but no it's like a full liner it's a full lip like you have to wear like a lot of makeup on the rest like you're giving me lip i have a liner and lip gloss on right not lip gloss cream lipstick on right now i know but you can pull that off not many people can okay thanks guys anyway okay so my bad week also happened at nordstrom which is kind of weird weird yeah so um this week i've been shopping for samples for my clothing line like we go to store or i go to stores
Starting point is 00:08:48 buy a t-shirt that i like kind of edit it or whatever and i'll put it out like a copy i mean it's like you know right it's like a soft you're getting inspired a soft steel so i was at nordstrom shopping and i saw this shirt that i loved i'm like this is amazing long sleeve super cute little tunic kind of shirt but it was a size extra small i'm like i'm not an extra small but like the shirt looks good i'm gonna try it on and see how it fits so you guys don't know this but i have like crazy hyper extended elbows my oh my gosh oh my god you guys they're huge wow wait yours are not yours are not that bad actually becca's are mine are mine are like big though that's not hyper extended that's just a big elbow it is hyper extended i got
Starting point is 00:09:35 in trouble in cheerleading because i didn't keep my arms straight anyway okay anyways so i'm trying on this shirt this extra small shirt with tight little sleeves and i get the damn shirt stuck on my elbows and i could not get it off for like 10 minutes what'd you do i had to have like the dressing room attendant no you did not you had to ask for help because like every time i tried to pull it off it was like a those like chinese finger traps it would just get like more stuck and more stuck on my arms i had to have help so she pulled it off of me and it was one of the most embarrassing moments i've had in the recent past can i be straight up you guys are wimps this week i'm about to throw down a bad week that is going to top everything that you both said i can't
Starting point is 00:10:17 wait good and bad mixed together go for it another one of those i love those here we go no this is this is my bad i'm going to leave us inspirational with my good week here's my bad week so i get a call from my agent who I love. She goes, you know, cause we're like in my contract is up soon. And like, I want to stay where I am, but like, you know, there's, there's always like other calls coming in. And so I'm meeting with other people and, and, um, she's basically like, Hey, so aside to that, um, you know, you might want to like really just tone down the Botox because people in the news, they just like really like a natural face. And she's like, you know, and like the fillers and i was like oh my god i'm like well i don't get fillers so um this is weird and i was
Starting point is 00:11:00 like you know i drink a lot of water and she's like yeah and you could tell she thought i was lying but then i was like this is also my agent and it's her job to be like tough love so i was like totally like i get it i won't get my summer sprinkle of botox this year so anyway then i was like asking one of my friends and i was like do you think i look like a housewife like do i look like i've been injected and she goes oh yeah like everyone's always asking me like what you've done to your face what yeah wait but you look you don't look any i'm gonna say this in person i'm gonna give you truth town in person you do not look like you've had a lot of stuff done in pictures on the red carpet you do which is why someone thought you were melissa rivers
Starting point is 00:11:38 what yes twice i walked the golden globes red carpet and another red carpet you just pulled it back and pulled it out and getty images like the company that puts the photos out on the wire for the magazines to pick up i couldn't find my photos and i was like where's my beautiful green dress from the golden globes and then search melissa rivers and then it was melissa rivers who p.s melissa you're beautiful and you're your own unique flower but like we're not the same not the same age right and now wait isn't she like in her 40s i don't know but anyway i mean anyway so then i was like i was like no and she goes yeah everyone's always asking like because you don't have any wrinkles and like you don't have any lines from where you smile
Starting point is 00:12:17 and I was like, so then I was like really upset about, so I wrote this whole blog that I haven't posted about what I do do, which is like a drink, a ton of water. I haven't been in the sun since I was 21. I always wear SPF 50. I do get a sprinkle of Botox every year. I get IPF photo facials. I use like, I've used a retin-A for a decade. So like, I just don't, I'm a little waxy, but it's because of all the things I do, you know? So then I was like, okay, I've gotten this out of my system. I'm okay with it. Like I know I have wrinkles. It's fine. So then I sit down to get my makeup done this morning by a different makeup artist at work and i was like telling her the story i was like that's so funny she's like oh i definitely thought you had cheek implants
Starting point is 00:12:52 what the heck i just want to clear the air everyone i have not had injections into my cheeks and my mouth and my face like i am just a botox girl i need everyone to chill out it's just my face and you're hurting my feelings this is just my face maybe i have too much highlighter powder on i don't know i think you're doing the kardashian makeup plot maybe that's what it is i have very smooth skin because of the retin-a so like sometimes i know i can look a little waxy but like i don't know what to tell you this is my face the end bad week it is kind of a good compliment because at least you don't have a ton of wrinkles it's just my face it's this is it do you understand how she feels though because you got your boobs done and yeah and you know what you want to admit
Starting point is 00:13:42 it you guys i'm wearing my third love bra right now do you love it yeah that's great um okay good week i want to tell this story very quickly so i was taking an uber home from my friend's wedding and i was kind of tired and it was uber x and the guy that picked me up i was like just a regular guy and i first mistake i hate checking i hate uber i hate uber x at night for a female i know whatever i like to take risks i am life on the edge i don't like small talk because i'm an introverted extrovert and small talk makes my soul hurt a little bit, which is why we have a radio show. But, um, anyway, so I actually did feel like happy in my heart. So I started talking to him. He told me the most amazing story. He said, you know, I used to live in the projects
Starting point is 00:14:19 and my dad left with, my mom has five kids and I started working when I was 12 so I could support them at the Taco Bell. And then I got my mom a job at the Taco Bell. And then my brother worked at the Taco Bell. And then my sister worked at the Taco Bell. And I was like, this is such an insane story. And he's like, and we saved up our money and we all worked at the Taco Bell for like $6 an hour. And we finally just got an apartment for all of us. And then I felt like everything I've ever complained about on this podcast, I'm a terrible person. Like these, this whole family is working together for people so they can make a collective $21 an hour. And they like got themselves out of the projects. And it's so interesting to me because so many people are
Starting point is 00:15:01 like, I just had this hard life and I can never save myself from it. But this is proof. This guy, he was like, I drive the Uber at night to like make extra money to support my family. And he was talking about like, it was just insane. He was so inspiring. And if I had never opened up and I had this conversation with him, I would have never now Becca probably thinks he was lying to get better tip. Wait, wait, you tip him. I don't know. Sometimes I tip Uber, but I don't tip on Uber. Hey, my agent's calling. You think I got a job? Probably not. Um, okay. Anyway. Um, perfect i don't have their number saved as my agent that's how busy you are in your acting career too busy acting all the time it's a real problem um i really like that story because
Starting point is 00:15:38 mostly my uber drivers are farting and denying it okay swear to god i got in an uber the other night dead silent dead silent i'm with my boyfriend and we're like going to dinner and all of a sudden he goes one me and rolls down the window the uber driver said that yeah and it was not us. So there you go. There are three people in this car. And I was like, sir, I think it was. Well, I like your story. Thank you. Those are inspiring. Time to move on. I'm so excited to announce that Kirsten Maldonado is here from Pentatonix and she is amazing. Now back to the lady gang. Okay. We're so excited. First of all, it's going to be extra hard for you to become the next Adele
Starting point is 00:16:22 because your name is impossible. So let's like get it out of the way right now and let's give us like the, everyone will go by the Lady Gang pronunciation. Kirsten Maldonado. It's not that hard.
Starting point is 00:16:34 That's actually not hard at all. K Maldonado. Kirsten Maldonado. But I was just talking about with somebody, you know, like when, how all the words and the vowels
Starting point is 00:16:41 and the consonants don't have to be like all lined up and people can read, but they still know what exactly the words are, even if they're misspelled. I think people automatically
Starting point is 00:16:47 think my name is Kristen and they're like McDonald or something i think that's what their brain goes to it looks hard and then you say it and you're like whatever i've got to be honest it's very daunting it's a pretty long daunting name i've got to be honest with you idiots not you kirsten but looking at this as an english speaking person this is actually not that hard at all at all like it is phonetically written it is exactly how you say it whatever okay let's move on to more interesting but the cool thing is is that for a long time you were just known as that girl with the guys like because my name is so hard
Starting point is 00:17:21 they're just like you know the girl you know and so now but now you were like you're branching out you got your own thing going well when you have like two grammys sometimes people like remember your name um i want to mention a couple things about you that are amazing number one which always is number one on my list the cutest effing dog you've ever seen olaf how many instagram followers does Olaf have now? Oh my gosh, I haven't checked. I think he had like 90...
Starting point is 00:17:46 90,000 Instagram followers. I want to see the dog. What kind of a dog is he? 80. Oh, he's 80. I'm sorry. I think he's around 80. It's a white husky.
Starting point is 00:17:52 I'm going to show you. Oh my gosh. Absolutely mind-blowing. I'm obsessed. She also has her blog at Kirsten Maldonado, but you can also go to shopkirstenmaldonado.com
Starting point is 00:18:03 and buy all the merch and deliciousness that you're making. Which there is a shirt that has all my names spelled wrong. It's called A for Effort and it's Kirsten
Starting point is 00:18:10 and then it's crossed out like krista and christy and the other day though for a grammy part a grammy's party i got called carson carson c-a-r-s-o-n which is like a new level of by who i don't know it was like a picture and it had it was like my boyfriend and me and it was his name and then carson maldonado and i was like wow whatever question that's embarrassing for the person who wrote that what is the worst starbucks name you've gotten when you've like oh my gosh i had a picture of it i think it was like kurti kurti that's nice um and so pentatonix is slaying the game you guys have single-handedly changed the music industry which is like insane um and you're heading back on tour in april but
Starting point is 00:18:53 in the meantime you've been in the studio and you've been writing like yeah is this new yeah i mean i feel like we all started writing an original album last year and so that's kind of the first time all five of us had ever individually gone and were writing with people and kind of figuring out like who we were and um i don't know it was such a cool learning process that i i've been doing it myself and it's just so fun it's really really cool just to like get your ideas out there and and you mesh with different people it's kind of like a blind date every time um and so i've i found some people that i just absolutely love and it's just really fun to just be creative and be in the studio and um be singing do you take that music back to the guys or is that for you
Starting point is 00:19:29 we haven't we don't have any new plans yet to take back music but um so really it's just for me would you do like a solo girly record at some point are you allowed to is that against the rules like are there rules contractors because i know that they're probably i've never like really gone into just because i mean to be honest like until last year i was very um i wasn't very confident in myself and what i could do so i feel like last year i kind of like blossomed and like you know i yeah i came out of my shell was really trying to um write started my blog and i feel like now i've really developed an opinion like the four years that i've been out in LA and like been doing this so um now I like really believe in what I have to say and really
Starting point is 00:20:05 want to showcase it and share it with the world so I want to definitely one day um it's very interesting though that you're like I didn't have the self-confidence and yet I see you on the Grammy red carpet and you're like so how do you how do you pull that out like you just fake it till you make it um yeah I just had to tell myself what my mind is like you know like every girl's mind like overactive overanalyzing piece of crap um so i just kind of have to remind myself and just really believe in what i could do and like i'm my own worst enemy like for sure um and i definitely like on bad days will go immediately to that negative dark place totally but like you know ultimately i am in charge of how i feel and i really truly believe in that um and so i
Starting point is 00:20:49 have to make it happen for myself because no one else is going to make it happen for you what's the hardest thing one of our big topics is always like the Hollywood heartbreak what has been the the thing that has been the hardest in this whole Hollywood world for you um I think just really adjusting to LA at first I feel like when it all started happening it was really exciting and it was um like a bunch of friends like coming together and doing this group and for and for fun but um when I came out here I think I don't know I kind of like walked too far ahead of myself and when I got here I was just like wow oh I don't know if I'm ready for this I'm a little overwhelmed I was like 19 and I still like was like oh but like I have college and my friends there and like
Starting point is 00:21:28 I didn't know anyone out here and um it was really hard to meet people as it is just moving out to California um where did you move from Texas okay yeah and I went to school in Oklahoma um Arlington Texas like Dallas Fort Worth area but um yeah that's a move yeah it's a shock yeah and the thing is you're the only girl in the group so there's you guys are spending so much time together there and there's no time to just be like are you feeling this way girl yeah i am too you don't have anyone to have your period sync up with i know you're right you're so right and when initially it was the four other guys and one guy that was driving in a um like a little suv and so i was like literally the only girl in a van when we were driving around our first mini tour and i was like
Starting point is 00:22:08 i think i'm miserable dark times what has been the moment the ish moment we always talk about the ish like where you thought i am the bomb.com i have made it i look fierce i am owning it i mean there's been a couple of things i can think of that come to mind for me but um it's like star wars grammys that tree opening when you guys were all dressed up like christmas presents at the boz lerman thing i don't know oh my gosh yeah what like do you have a moment where you thought i'm a superstar i'm mariah carey right now baz lerman that's a good one because i feel like that was kind of the first one that happened because I, yeah. So, um, Baz Luhrmann did the, uh, Christmas tree, uh, windows at Barney's, you know, they have, they like decorate the windows every year.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Um, and so we were part of it. We made the music for it. And, um, then he dresses up like Barney's like dresses all up and like beautiful dresses. And I had like a custom made dress for me and I felt like I could little fairy princess. And I wore my first Louboutins for the first time. and that's like a little girl like oh yeah and they like they were um silver and sparkly and i was like oh my gosh they're like my cinderella shoes and after i was like thank you guys so much for letting me wear these like i always wanted to wear louboutins like that's like my like fashion drape you know my first like fashion step yeah and they were like oh you can keep them and i was like oh my god i was like so excited and i mean and the entire thing was just like like baz
Starting point is 00:23:31 Baz Luhrmann has done Moulin Rouge and the other one, Nicole Kidman. I don't even, oh my gosh. Wait, you're going to have to edit that out. Baz Luhrmann's done like Moulin Rouge, which is like actually my favorite movie ever. And so he's like really theatrical and whimsical. It was amazing. The entire thing was just like really fun. Okay.
Starting point is 00:23:50 This week's like a lady question for the whole gang here is what is the most convenient time you've ever gotten your period? Oh, my gosh. intercourse like during i just said intercourse like an 80 year old woman intercourse you didn't know and then it it i feel like it does that not like like open the it definitely it's like no you know it knocks down the dam it breaks down the dam jack do you have one god um i mean i can remember in high school i got it once when i was wearing white pants oh my god me too never a good time i gotten like did you guys ever have this probably
Starting point is 00:24:35 only in canada where karate pants were really cool no club monaco made like a white karate pant and i remember like saving up 60 so i get the white karate pant and then i was sitting in english class and i looked down and like my whole white karate pant like it was i've never actually i didn't even understand how that much like could come out and then i had to like wrap my sweater around my pants and go to my locker and drive myself home and change and that's like grotty pants no more devastating in high school because you're just like it's so weird you you want everyone to think you're having sex because it's cool to have sex when you're in high school but then you like don't want anyone to know you're having your period so it's like a mix of like
Starting point is 00:25:12 here it's still maturity i don't understand do you have one um it was when i first got it and i was backstage i was about to go on stage but it was just rehearsal thank goodness but i was in my costume and all of a sudden were you i was it was like 13 so it was before high school and i was like oh my god freaked out went to all my friends and i was like hey holy crap like do any of you have a tampon or something and they were like no no it hasn't started so i was just you were the first so i was like i don't know what to do here you're like totally did you guys i was like embarrassed because like no one could like coach me and like embarrassment why is that i like cried i also was in my costume and i was like please god like don't get this on the costume god yeah
Starting point is 00:25:53 did anybody else not experiment with tampons before they got their period i never i didn't know what it was at all what you experimented with the tamp yeah i was at my friend's house and her mom had like tampons under the sink and i was like i want to try this you put it up before i got in so much trouble yeah yeah i don't know it's hard to put up when it's like a little bit it didn't i mean it really didn't go i have a kind of embarrassing story but i was practicing we'll take one more embarrassing story i got a tampon stuck when i was like 15 and i had to go to the er oh my god what and it was like one of the light ones it was the smallest little thing but like as a 15 year old when i just got my period oh my gosh did you forget that it was
Starting point is 00:26:33 i know i knew it was there i couldn't get it oh no so he had to like put me up in the stirrups and like lube it up i'm like this is the most embarrassing thing it was a guy it was a guy doctor oh that's so mortifying okay back to real life um it happened to me but i was like 25 and i smoked weed and i think my vagina freaked out and it wouldn't come out it was like yeah maybe you just didn't know what you're doing no i was 25 and i i was so stoned because you're a stone yeah i was stoned and i couldn't relax the muscles in my vagina this is why i don't smoke and i called my mom you called your mom your mom was the first person you called yeah of course who else do you call when something's probably 9-1-1 dude like i did and probably told my mom too really yeah
Starting point is 00:27:12 everybody right i mean no i mean i call her she don't even massage my vagina um send a warm bath speaking of there's no good segue for this next question i want to take you back to real life back to real life for a second i think it's very interesting that you've created this life for yourselves and this success and you've done 100 your own like there was no way you could have pictured grammy awards and sold out tours when you guys were just getting together singing right oh no absolutely not and so i think a lot of our listeners are out there and they're like i want to do whatever it is I want to do in my life. And it's so scary to just start because when you start anything, much like starting this podcast, like there's no upfront awards, money, success. Like
Starting point is 00:27:52 you have to work for a long time before that comes. So like, what is the, what was your, I think I'm going to give up moment and that you push through. Um, it's a nice question. I think it was on talk. I think, I think it was just like a year in. I, because I can't, I'd come to LA and I was like, still a little like, ah, how do I feel about all this? I kind of got that sense confused with how I felt about music and how I felt about performing. I kind of mixed them together. And so for a while I was like, you know, how can something that I've loved for so long be such a sad thing for me now?
Starting point is 00:28:28 Um, because I've always loved music and like, if, you know, if this outlet isn't doing that for me and if it's making me feel so sad, then like, I want to like not do it. You know, that's what it is. but um i think i i just really had to separate the two and and again like over and over i feel like you are in charge of how you feel like yeah i may have been like really sad and upset about a lot of things but like i also to a certain degree chose that and i didn't try my hardest to really get myself out um i try to like rely on other people to like help me out of there but at the end of the day like i and i think for starting things too you have to be the one to really push
Starting point is 00:29:05 yourself and to really go for it. And I think you're going to get a lot of no's and a lot of disappointments along the way, but, um, you're going to be in charge of your success. And at the end of the day, if all your success is built up by anyone else, anyway, you're not going to be happy with it or it's not going to be aligned with your priorities or your views. And you're going to, you know, you're very inspired. Do you by happen to chance have a mirror message? A mirror message is like when you have a mantra that's on your mirror written in like Sharpie or lipstick or like a life mantra that i love a life mantra these girls think i'm stupid um it's not on my mirror okay um it's a negative mind will never give you a positive life that's a good one
Starting point is 00:29:46 such wise words where do you keep your grammys um i have it on my dresser so it's in my room now we moved um so it used to be like in a different room like on top of a bookshelf you have two you haven't got the second one yet i haven't gotten the second one yet they have to give you all like every member one they do because we were nominated individually like it's all our names as people as the arrangers it's not like pentatonix it's under all our names which is great because then we all got one does that happen sometimes where they only get one for a group i think if it's if you're nominated as the group then you get one did you ever take a shot out of it just for fun take a shot no everyone that's what everyone always asks me you gotta do it yeah all my
