Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which means it's going to be awesome. Hi, I'm Barbara, aka your nursing educator on Instagram. I'm a registered nurse and I create content to help nursing students feel ready to take on anything and everything that comes with the job. And trust me, it's a lot. Here's one of my favorite and simplest pro tips. Upgrade your scrubs to figs.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Figs are designed for us. They are super soft, lightweight, and breathable with four-way stretch to keep up with your every move. Polished professional silhouettes? Check. Functional details and pockets in all the right places? Check and check. No matter what your day has in store, Figs has layers to match. Their underscrubs are perfect on their own or as a lightweight base layer to help keep you cool and dry. And when the temperature drops, their outerwear styles are made for everything from chilly commutes to freezing hospital hallways. If you're in healthcare or love someone who is, check out figs head to where figs.com and use code figs ca for 15 off your first order that's
Starting point is 00:01:02 where figs.com code figs ca well what is this welcome to the lady gang that's amazing say that again the lady gang things are about to change around here each week we catch up with hollywood's hottest girl posse kelty knight becca tobin and jack vanik hello hello what it wow hello hello hello and welcome to the lady gang i am becca towin here with jack vanek and kelty knight we gotta keep that in that was weird yeah something happens to me when we record in a different like day and time than usual and so like i'm off we're because we're recording in the morning we usually record in the afternoon yeah yeah i also have my invisalign in which i think makes it very hard you know to talk you really don't have a lisp when you talk like
Starting point is 00:01:52 Jared has a really, it makes his, he kind of has a lisp already, but then like it makes his lisp worse. Yeah. No, I, I was, I've been working with it and trying to make sure no one can hear it. No, you're good. Kelty hears it. I don't hear it. Really?
Starting point is 00:02:06 Oh, I think you're great. And you would be a great Roxy Harden Broadway. Oh my gosh. She's starting already. I know. I think that we need to retire this debate after this episode. Are you sick of hearing about it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Like so sick of hearing about it. I'm not. She's so bitter. Yeah, is it because you feel left out? Let's have our listeners write in. Yeah, are you sick of hearing about it? Because they seem to be posting a lot about it. They do.
Starting point is 00:02:29 I mean, you're probably talking about the same five people posting over and over about it. Okay, well, we'll see. Okay, well, in that case, it's time for... Good week. Yes, it is. Bad week. Oh, no. I'm going first.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Whoa. Okay, go. I never go first. Go for it. Okay, my good week. oh so i read was reading this book and it came and it had the best term for something and i've never heard this term used for it before it was skin hunger so it's like that like need to be touched like when chris is out of town all the time and then he comes home and i'll be like
Starting point is 00:03:06 falling asleep and i'll put his hand on my back or like he'll rub my head or something there's that skin hunger like you just it's not sex right and it's not like it's just a massage from a stranger it's like that hunger of just needing to be like coddled yeah skin like affectionately touched skin hunger i like that isn't that so good then it's my good week um i just finished this book called uh maybe you should talk to someone it's about this oh yeah i just heard her on dax shepherd's fabulous she's so good the book is incredible it's huge it's like 500 plus pages and i finished it in like two days it's like such a good read all right here's my bad week i've come up with a game that technically i love but i know you're gonna hate it involves
Starting point is 00:03:48 lying lying so you guys know how my foot's broken and everywhere i go someone's like how'd you break your foot yeah and i've started doing a thing with all the celebrities i interview and making up lies to do with them so like i'll be interviewing kelly clarkson and she'll be like how'd you break your foot and i'll be like it's actually your fault kelly and she'll be like what and i was like i'm on the treadmill and i'm like what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and she's like i broke your foot and i was like yeah you did kelly clarkson and then in the next five minutes gwen stefani comes by and she's like how'd you break your foot and i was like gwen i was on the treadmill and i'm like i know he's no way to end up your ex-girlfriend i was like
Starting point is 00:04:21 it's too fast to run to and she's like oh my god i feel kind of honored but like weird so i've started telling all the celebrities that they broke it you can't do this i love this so much what about if it's a celebrity that's not a singer so i get that any singer no i'm like i was watching pose on netflix and i got so gagged by the category that i fell on the treadmill it's so easy and fun that's i kind of like that thank you very much i know it's good no it's a good week for me but it's a bad week for you okay go ahead okay i'm gonna go um my good week so i was with tanya rad last night and i was helping her set up her like merch store or whatever and after we're done working she's like i'm going on a first date i'm like oh this is so exciting
Starting point is 00:04:59 like he was coming to meet her so we're like finishing up all of her work and i'm like getting up to leave and she's like no you have to stay and like feel this guy out and like let me know what you think I like this so I was like this is weird because I would never bring a friend on a first date but I was like all right I'll do it I'm like drinking some wine whatever so the guy comes he's so nice great job like super cute great and I feel like I was on the first date like I was on a first date myself and i kind of miss dating so i feel like i have like circumvented this problem of being in a relationship while also getting the excitement of a first date and that is being a third wheel jack's dating service hooking you up i kind of liked it it's kind of
Starting point is 00:05:44 fun because like there's there's such an excitement to a first date but it's usually because you don't know what the other person's thinking so it's a way to like get that excitement while also being in a secure relationship into it yeah so that's my good week my bad week um is simple i think i'm getting a bunion on my foot i am old why the side of my foot like on my bone kills how do you get bunions i don't know what a bunion really grow it's is it it's a bone it's a bone yeah so i don't know extra bone every time i put on any shoe my foot kills me and i think i have surgery for that i know it looks like a full-on surgery yeah it's intense it sucks okay becca all right so wait so your foot hurts that's what you're saying your foot hurts i think i have a bunion okay i just
Starting point is 00:06:26 want to make sure so like on a scale of like one to a broken foot how bad is it oh i get it okay but see no your foot will heal bunions only get worse you can get surgery for bunions i know but i don't want to have to i've never knock on wood have had to get surgery i'm scared of it all right i love surgery because i love just being knocked out being knocked out it does like a lot a lot a lot it does it would probably be the only time i'd actually actually yeah the best moment before you get um i was about to say put down no put under is the propanolol is that no that's the beta propofol that they give you a shot of like inject like a quick little shot like a morphine i don't know but you feel amazing oh hell yeah like it's so good it's
Starting point is 00:07:16 It's like a warm water. But that doesn't put you under. It's before they put you under? It's to get you, like, chilled out and relaxed before they actually... It's like massive Xanax. Yeah. Okay, so my good week is that the woman that I have admired since forever is on the Lady Gang today. That's a very exciting day.
Starting point is 00:07:36 She's the only person I care about in Hollywood. That's not true. I like a lot of people, but you know what it is? They always say, don't meet your heroes. But I did. And she's better. Like, you guys will see. Kelty knows her.
Starting point is 00:07:50 But, like, she's even better than what you could possibly imagine. And that literally never happens. That never happens. And I just love her so much. Okay. Bad week? Well, I am suddenly, like, a teenager again where I can't predict my cycle. Oh.
Starting point is 00:08:09 And I woke up in the middle of the night and it was, like, a gusher in the bed. It's so gross. But like to the point where I had to take the sheets off to not ruin my mattress. And I just heard that it gets worse. Like your periods get more aggressive. As you get older? Yeah. I thought they were supposed to be slowly disappearing from our lives.
Starting point is 00:08:33 I think they get worse and then they go away. Great. So, I mean, being a woman is just brutal. It's a dark time. It sucks. So what's wrong with me? This is the second time this has happened. Well, remember when I got my period twice in one month?
Starting point is 00:08:45 Yeah. My period is usually every 28 days on the dot. Yeah, me too. It sucks. My period's been shorter. I've been getting it like every 19 or 20 days. And I'm like, wait, does this mean I'm going to have more periods in my lifetime? Yeah, well.
Starting point is 00:08:56 I think they're going to come really close together and then poof, they'll be gone. I feel like I must be going through menopause. Early menopause? I'm old, but I'm not that old. Okay, when we come back, Becca's about to poop her pants. Now back to the Lady Gang. our guest today may very well put an end to our ongoing who should play roxy heart in chicago battle as an accomplished actress singer and author she's conquered broadway film and television
Starting point is 00:09:26 with roles in the west wing pushing daisies glee and the good wife but it was her broadway roles sally brown and you're a good man charlie brown and glenda and wicked that left us feeling all the feels and a little jealous that she will definitely become an egot winner before i do Now, after just releasing her seventh studio album, For the Girls, that features, no big deal, Ariana Grande, Dolly Parton, Jennifer Hudson, and Reba McEntire, please welcome to the show, Emmy Award winning, Tony Award winning, Grammy Award winning, way too good to be here, Kristen Chenoweth. That was the best intro. How do we get you that Oscar, girl? I know.
Starting point is 00:10:01 What are we doing? You're so close. No, I mean, I don't know. I've really, I've been a part of cast albums that have won Grammys. I would love to have my own there. Okay. It still counts, though. I was part of a cast Emmy, and I call it an Emmy.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Emmy award-winning Kelty Knight. It does. It counts. It counts. You're close to the EGOT. I mean, you are. How do you figure it out? No, you write an original song for Lady Gaga.
Starting point is 00:10:27 That's what I think. I think it could be your musical Lady Gaga. Oh, that is such a great idea. I just wrote a song for a Hallmark movie. Not quite the same, but getting there. Can you win an Oscar on a Hallmark movie? No, because it's television. No.
Starting point is 00:10:39 God damn it. but next it's there thank you for putting that into the universe it's good well let's talk about the Hallmark movie
Starting point is 00:10:45 because we love Christmas movies December 7th yep a Christmas love story yes okay are you falling in love
Starting point is 00:10:53 of course and with Scott Wolf no Scott Wolf is my high school's what did you get to kiss him
Starting point is 00:11:01 I can't confirm or deny if I got to kiss him in the show do you remember the Scott Wolf haircut yes everyone had it I would run home
Starting point is 00:11:08 on Wednesday nights to watch Party of Five oh my god i definitely kissed a pillow saying it was oh me too and you know when you walk in and you meet him and you're like okay be cool be cool and then of course i got to like chance to like talk to his wife facetime and who i really really love a lot and she's so cool that and you see them together and just you know you just like oh stab my stab you but he is just so sweet and so funny he's a good guy but there's something about holiday movies because there's this one and then in 2020 there's holiday on netflix do i have christmas right yes you are wearing a fuzzy white
Starting point is 00:11:44 glove right now too so i'm feeling like i'm not really helping my car you're not helping your cause i'm like um but i love a holiday movie and i don't think we've made enough of them in our life weren't you in four christmases i have done four christmases which i love i loved it too i loved being in that film and reese was so good and vince vaughn and all of the people all of the character actors deck the halls and 12 men of christmas oh my god uh uh christmas i did a christmas album maybe 10 years ago and then a christmas love story and then holiday so it'll be six you really do like exude christmas spirit i know thank you that makes me cheery i love christmas yeah yeah i love it i've been doing christmas though all year y'all so
Starting point is 00:12:30 you're over it you're like i'm starting in february so two months and then the break and then two more months and then yeah now we're here talking well listen well the good thing is is that we can break up the christmases with a shirt only cover of the album yeah okay let me tell you something i love this i love this for so many reasons a you're hot you're like ageless which is like a whole thing but the fact that you're like you know what i'm gonna do this record i'm gonna bring all the girls on it and then i'm gonna be pantsless on the cover it's next level it's like the risk like there's no risk she does whatever the fuck she wants she does was there a blowback to that or you were like they were like what are you gonna wear i was
Starting point is 00:13:16 like maybe just a t-shirt but on the bottom i'm like nothing i think nothing and then i took some with just wrapped around the t-shirt wrapped around you know and then i took one naked with no with no top and just jeans and you know covering myself like janet stuff yeah but i just thought it kind of was a throwback feel for me but also i i was tired and i didn't want to put on pants that day pants suck they suck they just suck and i thought why can't i not have pants yeah well and also i think it's very funny or interesting that ariana grande is on the album she also hates pants it's like a pants list i did not realize that right she wears the big hoodie sweaters and just a jean and an over the knee a boot a boot no jean no
Starting point is 00:13:58 a boot and a sweater and you just had just a shirt just a shirt yeah just a shirt and like no bra just went for it tell me the conversation that goes on between you and no big deal my icon queen dolly parton i think my head would explode if i was in the room with you there's a picture of me and dolly on this and it's a terrible picture of me it's the only one i have my neck looks so old and i'm like well wrong it's going up wrong again i saw it right when i walked in the room and i practically genuflected i like bowed okay good it's like at the altar of dolly she's way above kim kardashian you know she's at the top she's at the top at the top top um you know i didn't think she would say yes i had a different song in mind for us to do together um
Starting point is 00:14:39 here you come again oh yeah better than a body has so i thought maybe that song and then when my manager reached out to her manager because we do know each other but i didn't i wanted her not to feel pressure you know yes she said well if I'm gonna do something with Kristen I want to do something I wrote and I thought no she's not gonna get she is not gonna give she is not gonna let me have that and when she said let's do I will always love you I thought oh my god so um I sent her my cut and then she sent me her cut and I did the ugly cry oh I sent her a video back going I can't believe it I was unable to speak and she videoed me back and said well Christy I don't know if you like it or hate it oh I'm like I love it are you kidding you could read the sing the phone book and
Starting point is 00:15:20 and I would celebrate it. Wow. So that happens. It's next level. I can't believe it. That's like... I want a movie with you, too. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:15:27 I want a movie with you, too. I would love it so much. You know, I'd love to play her. You're going to be Jolene. Oh, my God, Jolene. Because they're making the movie, right? Jolene. Did they make it already?
Starting point is 00:15:37 I think they did. I think they did it for Netflix. God damn it. Dolly, I love you. I mean, I need to play her. She's staring at the picture right now. You do need to play her. That's your Oscar, babe.
Starting point is 00:15:46 That's your Oscar. That's the Oscar. You're playing Dolly, and then there's a new original song you write with Dolly for the film. You win the Oscar. You all are each other's dates to the Oscars. Dolly, are you listening? You need to chin with this up. Dolly, can you hear me?
Starting point is 00:16:01 Dolly, are you with me? Come on. Yeah, it's it. It's so good. So good. I just feel like there's a part of her spirit. I mean, I have searched the world over, and I cannot find anybody that says, I don't really like Dolly. Have you met a person that says that?
Starting point is 00:16:15 Never. Me either. Never, ever. But I feel like you have vibes You have Dolly vibes You do Have you taken Did you watch her
Starting point is 00:16:21 Was she an icon of yours Oh the one Yeah And I mean Cause you have the same vibes Thank you I take that as a huge compliment I mean when I was
Starting point is 00:16:28 Little bitty bitty bitty I started singing And this guy at our church Goes you sound like Dolly Parton And I went I just always remember that And then I just became Of course growing up in Oklahoma
Starting point is 00:16:38 Country music was Huge All we listened to And that's just my queen She's the queen She is the queen And then I asked the other queen Reba
Starting point is 00:16:46 I mean, Reeve. Reeves. Reeves. Who looked up to Dolly too as well. And then, you know, it's just like generational, right? And then I was like, it would be cool to do such three different voices on I'm a Woman and get Jennifer Hudson to do it. And she sings her face off.
Starting point is 00:17:00 No, Jennifer Hudson. She has an insane, I mean, insane voice. Insane. Here's my next question. You do so many things. Like you have your hand in so many, I would say, divisions of Hollywood. I want to know which one has the best people and which one has the worst people
Starting point is 00:17:17 music people worse than TV people or movie people worse than music people there's good and bad this is the truth and I would tell you the truth there's good and bad vibes to both and what they are is just different when I'm in New York on Broadway it's no joke
Starting point is 00:17:32 if I walk in and I'm tired and a bunch of people are there to watch a workshop I better deliver as a producer it doesn't matter who you are it's going to come up and say Like, oh, that wasn't, we have to, you know, we need to talk about that. Yeah. We need to workshop that.
Starting point is 00:17:47 We just need to workshop it. In L.A., I get the feeling that people are like, of course we want you to do la, la, la, la, la. And then you find out it was never even. Right. So I just feel like it's just different. However, I will say that the speed at which things can get done in L.A. is quite impressive. Look what you've just done in one morning of your day, girl. We had a busy day.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and then, you know, in New York, I tend to sort of just do Broadway. Right. You know, or concerts. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaking of your ageless wonder, are there roles that you would love to do, like, on Broadway that you, I mean, I'm assuming you can get anything you want, but, like, is there, like, the, right. She has, like, a bat phone to Broadway. I know, but she's like, I'm ready to come back.
Starting point is 00:18:33 But hold on. I guess my question is, like, okay, take Chicago, for instance. Are you ever going to go be Velma? No. You're Roxy. I know, but are there roles? She's not going to do Chicago. No, I know.
Starting point is 00:18:43 She wouldn't do Chicago. But, like, are there roles that are dark and big and... Oh, we are getting back to Chicago. No, like, are there roles that you... That I would like to play. That you want to play like a mother f***er. You know what I mean? I kind of do.
Starting point is 00:18:55 And you're too sweet. What are they? I kind of do. Yeah, what's your ideal role? I kind of think if I got myself back into shape, like real shape, The Kiss of the Spider Woman would be fun. Uh-huh. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:04 It's candor nipped. My favorite. Um, there's roles, I mean, obviously we're talking about Dolly. She hasn't gotten her due yet on Broadway, really, with her own story, and I would love to, I would love to delve into Broadway there for her, because she deserves it. Also, I've said the same thing about Reba. Just as a sidebar, just for the girls, I think Reba deserves her own show. Think about what all's gone in her life.
Starting point is 00:19:31 But, you know, there's the Mames and the Hello Dollies, for sure, but Tammy Faye Baker is one that i i'm thinking of which which is a very dark and light person of revisit of i have i'm attached to playing her so that would be something cool and we're doing death becomes her as well yeah so there's a lot oh my gosh you can get whatever you want but it gives you i know i know and i'm worried about i need to get in yoga asap because you know all those maryland goldie even though they were a lot of it was cgi'd and trickery they still had to get themselves you know who can help you with the yoga poses i know she almost she almost gave up she was like i'm moving to seattle to become a yoga teacher and then the next week she got glee i left broadway and i was like
Starting point is 00:20:15 i'm so tired i'm so done i feel so like disenchanted with it all and so i started doing yoga and i was like this is my next calling and i'm doing it and i'm doing it and then i get a call from my agent they're like glee's looking for a bitchy cheerleader and i was like of course they are and you know they've been casting out in new york for a long time and i think because i didn't care i got it yeah that's why you're right i'm so happy that happened me too because honestly when i i will say this when i got glee the only person i cared about meeting was you that's it i swear to you i think there's an article somewhere that i did for some stupid magazine it's not stupid they probably are listening um and they're like who's the person
Starting point is 00:20:56 it was Vogue hardly they're like who's the person that you are most starstruck to work with and it was you
Starting point is 00:21:03 thank you this morning this week when we were like I was like guys E.T. comes first and I get in trouble if I miss
Starting point is 00:21:09 like E.T. and I was like I don't know guys I gotta go do this dance at Disneyland and Becca's like not this up for me
Starting point is 00:21:17 she's like we're doing it if you're not here it's the first show in 300 shows that you're not a part of but like we're doing it without you
Starting point is 00:21:25 we haven't had a show we're all three of us weren't we've had one one in the history yeah so it's like are you serious yeah so we made that we can't i was like you're very important to dropping our gauntlet but man okay what's the worst show you've ever seen on broadway oh really i'm giving it to you she's sipping the tea she's sipping the tea i'm getting nervous she's sipping crystal light getting nervous i saw a show and i had a friend in it it was off broadway and it was about like um dance with a vampire that's mine dance with a vampire no it was like the beach boy it was a there was like the age of the aquarius yes um it was like all this it came from japan they started a workshop
Starting point is 00:22:05 in japan i was dating a guy doing it and then they brought it to and it was like it was like all that 60s music like i can't remember groovy things or something anyway jack have you ever seen a show on broadway yeah we talked about it earlier i've seen joseph and the technicolor Dreamco. Amazing. Amazing. Or whatever. Yeah. And Phantom. And Phantom of the Opera. Okay. You've got to come to Broadway, girl. And a visa. You have to see Kristen. Let's all go.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Let's all go. We'll go to for the girls. She's doing November. Yeah. I want to go. She's doing two weeks. We're going. November 8th. It starts. Like, on actual Broadway in New York? Yeah. Well, that's the only thing she does. Yeah, she's not going to be off Broadway. I don't know where it is. Do you know where this woman is? She's not going to be at, like, there's not a Broadway. The Tapper
Starting point is 00:22:47 Theater. She's not at the pub down the street. So you can't do Broadway in L.A. It's only in New York. It's only in New York. But this is an honest question, Jack. I appreciate it. There are relatives of mine still wondering that.
Starting point is 00:22:57 So thank you. Not all of our listeners know about musicals. That's right. So I'm asking a question about that. So Broadway and the theaters are not actually on the street Broadway. No, they're not. They're a Broadway caliber theater. They could be on 56th Street.
Starting point is 00:23:09 But that's what I was wondering. There's not Broadway caliber theaters anywhere else other than New York. It's only New York. No. Only New York. Wow. There needs to be. There needs to be.
Starting point is 00:23:16 You need to do. I'm so glad y'all are having this discussion. We're here. We're here. We're coming. We're coming in November. We're coming in November for the girls. And we're coming backstage.
Starting point is 00:23:24 And we're wearing just t-shirts. Well, I may or may not be doing the same thing. That's hot. Oh, my God. Yes. You better have a fucking expensive pair of shoes on. Listen, have we met? Have we met?
Starting point is 00:23:34 Look at her shoes now. I know. What are you wearing? And what I love is that she's a little teeny tiny. A sparkle. This is a Louboutin you get when you're rich. Because this you can only wear with this one outfit. It's true.
Starting point is 00:23:44 You know what I mean? Like, you have to be rich to have this Louboutin. It matches your shirt. This is not an everyday Louis Vuitton. What size is this Louis Vuitton? That's five, I think. Five. Thirty-five and a half.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Oh, it's five and a half. So they're a little big, these shoes. Oh, my God. You're the tiniest person in the government. Before we run out of time, we have to play our game. I have prepared it importantly. I'm excited. Queen Chenoweth.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Okay, here we go. Okay. We're going to play a game now called the Chenoweth Casting Couch. Oh, gosh. Oh, my God. Now, Kristen, I'm asking you to put your casting cap on since you're the greatest icon queen goat of Broadway. and Becca and I will each be now pleading our case as to why we should play Roxy Hart on Broadway.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Oh, are we? Yes. You should have told me this. So begin. Becca, we're going to start. First question. What is your Instagram following? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:24:29 800,000 something? 840,000. Okay. And mine is 126.5. So as far as ticket sales, you would... Ticket sales. Okay, that's the first clue. Okay, got it.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Next. Now we will review our Broadway performance experience. Becca? rock of ages on broadway i was the swing and the sherry cover and then i toured with the 50th anniversary of west side story i can't remember which jet girl i was an important one what about um none of them are that's why okay and anything else you want to add you know just tours and regional theater okay what about the trans-siberian orchestra i did tour with the trans-siberian orchestra okay that was big um i had that's a christmas thing you
Starting point is 00:25:13 haven't done yet i would love to hello don't give her any ideas probably because that's cool hey i've also seen that so that's another way in vegas you are cultured in vegas oh yes we did do vegas what if you might have seen me holy shit yeah that was our tour did hit vegas okay back to the casting okay but back to the cast my broadway performance experience is none i would be a fresh new star i was a radio city rockette fresh new star that's right that's not a broadway No, but it's still. It's Broadway adjacent. It's discipline.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Yeah. I know the stage. Yeah. I know how to wear a heel on stage. Stage left and stage right. I know stage left, upstage, downstage. I know that. And I think what would be really exciting is that the headlines, I just want to add this in, could be like Kelty Knight in her.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Debut. Broadway debut. Okay. She's going to be back on Broadway 10 years after she said. And no one cared about the swing in Rock of Ages. So they're going to be like back. Who, where, did she ever. Yeah, but they care about Glee.
Starting point is 00:26:10 True. What's a swing? Okay. Okay. A swing is the ensemble member who covers every female ensemble track in the show. So basically, it's the hardest job in the show. She has to understudy all of the people, all of the ensemble, and be in the show. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:26:28 So just in case somebody gets sick, then you can take anybody's spot. Yeah. So you're like the MVP. MVP. Okay. Next, training. Where did you grow up? How's your training?
Starting point is 00:26:38 Oh, my gosh. I grew up in Atlanta. I went to Pebble Brook High School, which was for performing arts. Did you get kicked out of school? I did get kicked out. Yes. But not because I wasn't talented. It was because I smoked cigarettes and skipped class.
Starting point is 00:26:50 You got kicked out? Yes. For that? Yeah, they were mean. They were out to get me. They were flavored cigarettes. They might have been jealous. They were.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Were they cloves? No, they were like those fancy ones. I don't know. It's the equivalent of the Juul these days, like, you know, the mango-flavored Juul. I got got. I got got. And then I went to AMDA in New York City. Yeah, which is no joke.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Which is no joke. I didn't get into NYU. I was not smart enough. I feel like you're being a little biased. I feel like your band is a little biased right now. But we haven't gotten to you yet. Yes, well, we will. And then, yeah, I continued training in New York, you know?
Starting point is 00:27:24 That's wonderful. Yeah. Okay. What about you, baby? I went to the Sherwood Park School of Dance. What was the name of that? The Sherwood Park School of Dance. Okay.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Um, and I, uh, took hip hop and, um, it's a recreational class of hip hop. And what year was this? This was, um, 1956. Um, I studied tap jazz and ballet. I moved to New York, uh, at 18. It took me three times to get into the Rockettes. And, um, even after I had paid someone to teach me the exact routine, so I knew the routine and still couldn't get the job.
Starting point is 00:28:02 And then also Jerry Mitchell said, please stop singing It's a Good Thing You're So Pretty at an audition to me once. I love Jerry. He didn't. Well, see, that's going to give you a few points with me right there. Because I feel bad. Dedication. Resilience. I feel bad.
Starting point is 00:28:18 You'd be a horrible casting director. I would. This is not going good. The worst person you get the job is the underdog. Okay, we have three more things. The haircut. Roxy haircut. I have it now.
Starting point is 00:28:29 It's very short. Doesn't she have? I mean, Renee Zellweger had the short one. Is it a bop? It's a bop. It's already a bop. Yeah, I've got it. It's true.
Starting point is 00:28:35 You wouldn't need a wig. I do have poop brown hair at the moment. That's expensive. Did Roxy have blonde hair? That's an expense. Saves money. Okay, next, vocal range. Show us a run.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Come on, Becca. No! I'm telling you, you have to see a run. Hello. I told you that I was going to. You know I had a dream last night. Wait, I had a dream just last night. No, I'm not.
Starting point is 00:28:54 I'm going to do it for you, but here's why I'm scared. because I had a dream last night that I had to go do Rock of Ages again and play Sherry and they wouldn't give me rehearsals and you just had to go on and I went on and my voice cracked my mic fell off and I had to hold the mic
Starting point is 00:29:09 the actor's nightmare I had it and I was like why last night because you knew mama was coming to audition you today there she goes wait is that it I gave you a little warm up give her us a line No.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Becca. Don't make me do this. So rude. Your icon's right here. Okay, I'll do mine now. Can you tell how good somebody can sing by doing that? Well, she's definitely got some high notes. Yes, thank you.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Okay. Becca, I think you need to show us. Yeah. I'm not doing it. I love you so much. I'm not doing it. You're so mean. Sing us a song you sang on Queen.
Starting point is 00:29:45 This is like asking a 14-year-old boy who loves Michael Jordan to shoot some hoops for Michael. Yeah, and they would. Not at all. Yes, it is. If you want to be Young Dolly in the Dolly Parton musical, you will audition for Young Dolly. No, she's going to be Young Dolly. You're right, actually. She's going to be Young Dolly.
Starting point is 00:30:01 If you want to be the understudy to Chenoweth on the third national tour of Dolly. I'll swing it. You'll be my swing girl. I'll swing it, yeah. You want to be Dolly at the Pantages in L.A.? Yeah. I think Dolly younger years myself. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Maybe. And then I can narrate as Dolly now. Oh, my gosh. Please. Do you want to be Dolly's bitchy sister, Hilda? Does she have a big sister? She has sisters. She has so many.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Okay, last thing. Shoe size. Oh, my God. We wear the same. I know. That was a joke. That was a joke. We wear the same shoes.
Starting point is 00:30:32 I'm very sad. Do you need a small shoe for Broadway? Jack, I love you so much. You guys, I don't understand the requirements. No, you know what? There is no requirement. You can have any size foot you want. But sometimes if you're going into a world that's already existed, they will find someone
Starting point is 00:30:44 that has the exact same foot so you can wear the old shoes. I wanted to be Belle in the Beauty and the Beast, and I never would fit the costume. Right. I wasn't really right. Was Belle on Broadway? That was one where it was like a 5-6 requirement, right? Yeah, and I was like kept auditioning. And they were like, you're good.
Starting point is 00:30:59 I was like, maybe you could be a fork or something. But, you know, I could never really get in. So I think to the girls out there especially who feel like weird about their size, who cares? It's what made me different. I'm sure it hasn't. I know it hasn't gotten me parts, but it has gotten me parts too. So to you both, I don't understand why you can't switch off. One of you be Velma, one of you be.
Starting point is 00:31:19 I do. Because nobody wants to be Velma. That's the problem. There are moments in Chicago that I like Velma's role. Is Velma an ass? Velma gets to do the cell block tango, and Roxy doesn't. You're right. But Roxy, hot, da, da, da, da, the name on everybody's list is going to be Roxy.
Starting point is 00:31:40 She's got the passion. See, look at her. Now she's going to remember me. She's tone deaf. I am tone deaf. Okay, Becca. It's okay. Let's hold hands.
Starting point is 00:31:48 You have a good spirit. Who is the next Roxy Hart? Because now you know they're doing a Facebook watch, like, trying to find it. And we were going to enter, but we can't. Okay. My team won't let me. I'm going to say this. Wait, your team won't let you?
Starting point is 00:32:01 It's, like, below her. Okay. I think it's with all due respect that I speak to both of you. And, Jack, I think you could actually understudy. But I'm thinking I'm going to go with. I probably have a better voice than Kelty does. I'm going to go with Becca on this one. But Kelty, first runner up is my favorite spot
Starting point is 00:32:17 Because I've been there many times And you have a cash scholarship To go to my Broadway boot camp With 13 to 17 year olds next summer There's some training You know what my problem was And I'm just going to go out on this I really thought that my Broadway audition song
Starting point is 00:32:37 Should be Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood Why can't it be That was such a bad song You have to really be able to sing. I could have picked an easier song. That's our third song. I know. This guy I'm paying $150 an hour on 54th Street led me astray.
Starting point is 00:32:55 Yeah, he's not right. There's so many good songs. You do have a voice, though. I have a voice. She has a voice. It is incredibly grating as speaking and singing. Okay, before we run out of time and we get to the Ask the Lady gang, I do want to remind everyone that you are going to be joining the tabble.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Temple, I'm going to say this wrong, Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square for their annual Christmas concert September 13th, 14th, and 15th. So we're very busy this fall. We're busy. We're doing a lot of Christmas. Love it. We love you so much. Love y'all. You're never going to stop.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I hope not. You are like the hardest working person in this business. Thanks, Becca. Do you like to do it like that? I want to know. I want to know. Do you need breaks? Yes, and I'm going to have to get better at them.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Okay. Because I'm just speaking truthfully. I'm 51, and I need more rest than I used to have so that I can continue to do what I do. And also, I need to be an artist. So to be a better artist is to have more of a life. So I'm getting there. The problem is when you're good at everything, you're not just getting calls from the TV people. That's the thing.
Starting point is 00:33:53 You're getting calls, movie, music, touring, Christmas, Christmas tree, Mrs. Claus, Santa. Like, you're getting a lot of fucking calls. I look up and I'm looking on Marvel. I feel grateful for it. Because I also have showbiz ADD, so it works out. Okay, well, we can't wait until you get that Oscar. Oh, wait, I didn't tell my favorite Kristen Chenoweth story. Oh, please.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Oh, my God. Oh, my God, I'm nervous. I'm nervous. So we shot in the observatory. I'll never forget it. In Griffith Park. I'll never forget it. And it was you and Matt's duet.
Starting point is 00:34:25 Yes. It was, what was it? It was a heart, was it a heart song? It was a heart song. And we were there for a thing ever. I mean, maybe 15 hours. 15 hours? but Kristen walks in with a sheet cake just because it's no one's birthday it's nobody
Starting point is 00:34:43 nothing exciting is happening but she's like y'all I brought sheet cake oh my god and she just walks in walks in you're so cute I think you had Maddie at the time I did I had Maddie you had Maddie your little dog yes and she comes in and we're she's like we're gonna eat sheet cake and we just sat there and ate sheet cake while we shot this fucking beast of a music number that got cut from the episode. Oh, they got cut. I want to see that so badly. Me too.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Should we ask for, let's call Brad Falchuk. Please, Brad. I got the lovely email the night it was airing. So sorry, this isn't going to make it. And I was like, what? But at least we had some good sheet cake. We did have sheet cake. There's something so trashy and delicious about sheet cake.
Starting point is 00:35:23 I know. It's so good. I love it. Don't give me fancy cake from my birthday. Like, I don't know what this is made of. It's Crisco. It is. I'm putting it in my mouth.
Starting point is 00:35:30 Now I think I know how that tingles. Yeah, I know. I want some sheet cake right now. Well, the sheet cake queen is going to fix your life when we come back. Oh, my gosh. You're listening to The Lady Gang. Okay, and we're back. So for this part of our podcast, we have our listeners writing questions,
Starting point is 00:35:47 and we give them questionable advice, but we feel like you might give a little bit better advice than we will. We'll see. Low bar. Very low bar. Okay. Our first question comes from Fancy Nancy. Usually it's anonymous, but sometimes we get a fun name because people used to write in their real names in the beginning, and then we accidentally ruined people's lives.
Starting point is 00:36:11 We didn't realize how many people were listening. Ashley Johnson from Georgia says, I'm cheating on my boyfriend. Their life is over. Exactly. Now their life is over. So this is an alias, I would hope. Oh, yeah. Fancy Nancy says, I've been seeing this guy for three-ish months.
Starting point is 00:36:28 We hang out once or twice a week. he's a real gentleman and i can't complain about the d every time we're together i usually end up having a good time but when i think about it we don't really talk much at all i wish i could say we're too busy kissing or getting lost in each other's eyes but it's mostly just silence neither of us are big talkers and i never really feel like it's an awkward silence but i'm starting to notice it more and more we definitely have things in common so i don't know what the issue is i've never been good at dating and would usually have phased him out by now but for some reason i want to keep seeing him and would even consider making things official soon could it be that we're still
Starting point is 00:37:02 warming up to each other or is this the universe telling me i'm an awkward whore that can't handle a mature relationship whoa harsh words fancy oh my gosh fancy nancy oh fancy fancy so seeing a guy for three months they don't talk but she wants to make things official yeah i think she okay first of all fancy fancy nancy i would like to know your age yes secondly i say if you're below actually i'm not going to put an age on it if you're having a fun time and he's treating you nice don't worry too much about the awkward silences right now but let's say in a year if you're still with him and it's awkward silence i don't know eventually all that that love and awesome like as you say the d all of that things all those can go away and you're stuck with the personality so
Starting point is 00:37:54 you really want to get to know someone's personality because that's who you have to imagine being your best friend and stuck on an island with and all that stuff and if you have nothing to say it's gonna get real boring yeah that's yeah i mean i get frustrated after zach and i have spent a ton of time together like on a vacation say and it's just the two of us like At the end of our honeymoon, the final dinner, we were like, I have nothing left to say to you. And that's after five days of constant togetherness. Yeah. And that was hard, you know.
Starting point is 00:38:24 It's hard. That's reality. But I can't imagine that off the bat three months in. Yeah, you should probably be. Well, you should still be in that honeymoon phase where you're, like, obsessed with each other. And, I mean, if you're both bigger talkers, you never run anything out of things to talk about. And it's exciting. so if you're already noticing try asking him questions yeah engaging conversation yeah what's
Starting point is 00:38:47 his interest yeah i think and does he talk about her interest i mean i know that's another big thing well it's hard when you have two like introverted people dating and neither of them are the ones that are like initiating conversation then it can kind of get hard so i don't know if it's just maybe an interesting match and you need somebody that's gonna like pull info out of you Yeah. Yes. Second question comes from anonymous. Anonymous says I am 23 years old and got out of a long-term relationship a few months ago. I've typically typically been a boyfriend girl and haven't been single for a long period of time, but I want to take this time in my life to be single and really figure myself out. I'm absolutely loving my independence and having the opportunity
Starting point is 00:39:24 to be completely selfish and learn about myself. My only issue is that my entire group of friends consists about nine consists of about nine couples. So every time we do anything, I am the third sixth or nine wheel and it's making me start to doubt myself any advice on embracing being single and independent while being surrounded by couples oh i mean i have a lot to say about that okay dive in i've not been married i've had serious relationships but i've had many times in my life where i've shown up at family functions and they're like oh crazy aunt christy she's not going to have anybody and i've been the third ninth fifteenth my i mean it's a family joke now i say you're at the age that you should it's great that you have all these married couple friends
Starting point is 00:40:10 but get out there and meet some other people who are like you yeah yeah and that will also open your dating pool up and just you know if you want to date and date when i say date i don't mean get in a relationship I mean date yeah we try on jeans why don't we try on men or women or partners we must date so that we can find out what we like yeah that's my opinion preach do you want to get married or are you like me I know I was always never kind of led with that yeah I always made me feel a little bit of shame almost like I'm from Oklahoma and the Bible Belt and you should get married right gauge twice and did the runaway bride thing now I might be a late late bloomer but now I could see myself like eventually it making a little bit more sense but then I wasn't there
Starting point is 00:40:56 right but I I've had great relationships right you know I just wasn't I didn't want to just necessarily get the white dress the diamond and have that and then I've seen so many of my friends do that too soon and then divorce and I think I really want to be of course I'm 51 I probably know what I like now so oh yeah maybe do we ever I don't think I don't know I think our tastes change throughout our lives. I think so, too. I'm marrying for a third husband at this point. I'm like, what do I want for my 40s? Someone with a
Starting point is 00:41:26 jet. There you go, baby. Jet sounds good. God damn it. Number one was for a green card, number two was for love, and number three's for a jet. You know, my grandmother said my grandmother always said, Mary, the first marriage was for love, second one was for money, and third was just
Starting point is 00:41:42 a companion. That makes sense. It's true. That makes sense. But hopefully you Keep the money for number two. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And say you have it. Marry a dumb, rich guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Dumb and rich. No, I was going to say, this girl's 23, and all of her friends are married. So statistically, half of those are going to get divorced. Yes. So they're going to be the single, third, sixth, and ninth wheel when you probably have found your dude in a couple years. That's right. I also think that I was single a lot in my 20s, but I still feel like I could have done
Starting point is 00:42:13 it more. I could have dated more. I could have had more fun. I could have sampled more jeans. i could have tried on more jeans different sizes at the denim bar you know um so i i don't think you'll ever regret taking that time no it's really important and it is true it's to wait it's a way to find your person later down the line yeah and you'll really know that this person's right for you once you've experienced all these other men yeah and all the other genes just dating
Starting point is 00:42:40 all the genes i like that jeans is now really just coined something the d yeah the d okay Last question, also from Anonymous. Can you blame them? I know. She says, I'm a 30-year-old teacher who recently became the head coach of a varsity dance team at my high school in town. When I was hired for the job a few months ago, I was confident, inspired, and hopeful to make positive changes to the program as a new coach. Unfortunately, that outlook has changed in the past few weeks, mostly due to drama with the parents of the girls I coach. In all modesty, I look very young for my age.
Starting point is 00:43:16 I'm often mistaken for a high school student when on campus, which has led parents to undermining me and assuming I am too young and immature when it comes to dealing with their teenage daughters. How do I deal with the judgment and assumptions made about me based clearly off of my looks, and how do I prove I am worthy of this position regardless of my age? I feel like this is a good Kristen question because she still looks like she's in high school. From far away, I guess. Not up close. I love you, Becca. I would say to her, I did go many, many years, not anymore, but many years looking way younger. And also being petite, I understand that.
Starting point is 00:43:52 And also sounding a certain way, I understand that. And not being taken seriously. I think what you're saying, Anonymous, is that you feel that you're not being taken seriously by the parents and therefore they're overriding you. I say to you, not to pretend, but maybe you take on a new persona, if you will. You are the dance teacher. When you come in, you are going to kick ass, and you're not going to take any crap, because I know how hideous the parents can be. There are shows called Dance Moms for a reason, okay?
Starting point is 00:44:25 So, girl, decide your character, your inner character, how strong you're going to be, and you're not going to take any crap. And that doesn't mean, no matter how tall or short you are, be a character, be a tough ass, coach, and go in there and kick butt. Yep. Amen. Amen. I think so, too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Do you? No, I was thinking about this show that you were on that I loved so much, Good Christian Bitches. Thank you so much. I love that show. It was so, that was like, they, I know it got canceled or done or whatever for no reason. That was one of the best shows. That was the best show that came out that season. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:45:01 It was so good, but you were like so sweet, and then you were like so malicious inside. She needs to go watch the first season of Good Christian Bitches. You changed it, right? Yeah, it was actually called Good Christian Bitches, which they should have kept it. I love that. But it's called GCB, but go watch it. Yeah. Be her.
Starting point is 00:45:18 Yeah. Take on a break. Get tough, girl. It was really good. Also, it's going to be really nice down the line when you look this young. So young. Amen. I know.
Starting point is 00:45:25 Never complain about looking so young. Never. Exactly. All right. Well, Kristen, we're so glad you took time out of your amazing press tour for this record. I see you with all the real famous people. And then you came to the Lady Gang. And I was like, oh, my God.
