it's time for a quickie podcast one presents the lady gang the hollywood girl posse with
lady gang quickie here's kelty knight becca tobin and jack vanek let's make this quick
hello hello hello welcome to the lady gang quickie i am becca here with jack and kelty
good morning i just shoved chocolate in my mouth because is that what you're going to get
Yeah. I needed a sugar rush. Sugar hits me so much.
Really? It's so crazy.
Yeah. Speaking of a sugar rush, somebody in this group is having a birthday or had one. I don't
know when this is airing. Oh, is this the Kelty birthday episode?
It is the Kelty birthday episode. It's a bravaganza.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
She planned her own birthday episode.
Is there anything more on brand than that?
Jack still won't get a birthday episode because it doesn't happen in my birthday month.
This is airing the day of your birthday.
Happy birthday.
Thank you.
Oh, my God.
Happy birthday.
Are you – how old are you now?
I'm 39.
It's my last year of my 30s.
The year of hot.
Yes.
There's been – I've had a couple revelations.
I'm so glad we're having this episode.
Okay.
Not only because it's my birthday, but some big life revelations have happened in the
past three months leading up to 39.
Because 39 feels like a wrap-up.
Like 40, I think, is the start of my 40s.
Like it's fresh.
It's new.
And I refuse to be sad about that.
Like it is going to be weird for sure to be like, I'm 40s.
Like my mom told me she's like 69 and she's like, I still feel 12.
And I was like, I'll probably feel like that forever.
But anyway.
Yeah, my mom says that too.
so I think it'll be weird to be 40s for sure, but this is the end of 30s. And so there's a level of
melancholy because I'm like wrapping up the finality of my 30s and I'm looking back at
what I've achieved and what I've done and what I've learned. And what's crazy is that I have
this big dream that I really want to do like the sex in the city version of the 40th birthday party
next year, like one year from now and like take all my friends to like a resort and have them
like, just get yourselves there and I'll pay for everything. I mean, I don't know if I'm going to
be that successful. I'm hoping we have an incredible year, but like, I just want to do
something like that. And it's funny because for all of my thirties, my goal on my birthday was to,
I mean, I didn't have a birthday goal, but I've lived my life with it being like,
all these people will notice me. Everyone will wish me happy birthday. I am successful. I can
show you all the things I've done in my 38th year. Like, blah, blah, blah. Like, it's been a great
year. Here's what I'm going to prep. And then, and like, now I'm just like, I just want to go
somewhere with my friends. Like I'm at that point. That's a great revelation to have.
Yeah. Which is kind of exciting. I'm like the most meaningful thing that I could do. I mean,
obviously we can't because of COVID for this birthday, but the most meaningful thing that
could happen is just like girlfriends in sweatpants around drinking margaritas. Like that
is my life goal now. And I still have other goals and those are still as shiny and I still want them
to happen. But I think that it's exciting to like do this 39th year and also know that like I'm
excited for what that 40s is like. Where should we plan the trip? I know. I mean, in my dream,
it's like, there's so many different places. Wait, are we considered your friends?
Well, I have, yes. I mean, I have, here's the thing. I'm torn. Obviously I have a year to
planet. I'm torn because I don't want to mix friends groups. Cause it was like, I was like,
maybe my sister could come from London. It would be so fun. I think mixing is fine for that
situation. Yeah. It's like your one, it's your one time you're going to do it. Also we're not
22. Yeah. Like we, we all get along now. Like we're all grown ass women. Right. And the one
friend you have that I don't like, I'll just send a fake email to her address, giving her a job
opportunity for the same weekend there you go and i'll catfish her no but i was like do i want my
dancer friends like do i want my do i want to be couples like i just i don't know we have to figure
it out in my dream world i hate a cruise because obviously cruise ships are not coming back in any
big way i just literally saw a commercial for norwegian cruise lines yesterday yeah but like
aren't you ready to do it again and jared and i were looking at the tv like horrified so they are
coming back well maybe they will be back because i think a cruise is or something like that is
great because you can all hang out but then everyone can be doing their own activities
yeah i've never been on a cruise but we're gonna have to do some research on the cruises
yeah but we'll figure it out i think it'll be so fun and i had a huge 40th birthday plan for chris
and it was at darren chris's um bar in hollywood and i put down the deposit and i think it went
out of business or I don't even know if they have it anymore. I don't know. And I also put
a deposit down for a caterer and I'd like to get that money back. Uh, cause we never had the party.
Bummer. Was it right before COVID or was it right after COVID happened? Yeah.
This is April 25th. This is birthday. Oh, but, um, do you guys want to like wish me happy birthday
or like, do you want to say like little speeches about me? Yeah, I'm going to, I'll give you like
a, like a speech as if we're at your birthday dinner. Okay. God forbid. I don't miss those.
No. So let me see. So I've known you now for, well, when I first met you, you must have been
22? 22, 23. Yeah. 22, 23. And I didn't really know you that well. I had preconceived notions
that you would be somebody annoying that I wouldn't want to be friends with. How wrong was I?
But seeing you grow into a full-blown woman and also seeing you in the journey of the past five years, I think you've had the most growth of the three of us and the most like an evolution of womanhood.
and this is my favorite Kelty because you still bust your ass and you still work really hard and
you still, all those great things apply. But I think that you have become more empathetic.
I think you've become, you've slowed down a little bit. You actually listen more when we talk now
to you. You're fun. I think you're more fun now because you've let go of the crazy self-judgment
a little bit. Uh, and I'm just really happy to know you in your 39th wrap up year. I would say
too, like when you're talking about what you want for your 40th birthday, I think that you
have benefited most, not that COVID anybody should benefit from COVID, but I think that
you've done the most self-reflection over this year and really benefited in a self-growth type
of a way because you would have never said that that's what you want to do for your, or that's
what you want your birthday goals to be of that year, even a year ago. So I think you've really
taken the time of this, the silence of last year and the self-reflection and actually become
a way better person. Cause I can't say that for myself. So I think that that is, I can't,
I'm just like when the shit can be over so I can go out and have a beer. I haven't thrived. No,
I haven't thrived at all, but I think that you have, and this situation is for the three of us
is the best for Becca because she likes to stay home and do nothing. But I like to go out and do
shit. And then you like to go out and do work. So it isn't great for me or you, but you have
truly benefited and thrived in this situation. And I'm really proud of you for doing that.

cold case files every tuesday on podcast one spotify apple podcasts and anywhere you listen
to podcasts the lady gang i think that the aha moment that i had in year 38 about my personality
and my person is that you know my my therapy like really honed in on you are not either all bad or
all good. And I have spent most of my adult life truly just believing that when you're a good
person, you're that person that has friends and goes to birthday parties and has hobbies and you
have a full life. And when you're bad, bad equals hard worker. And those two things are completely
separate. And you've always considered yourself a hard worker. I've always considered myself a hard
worker and ruthless and the go-getter bitch and that. And like, I really lean. And then as I got
more successful in my life, I like leaned into that. Cause I was like, that's who I am. I'm only
that there's nothing good about me. Like I really stopped believing that there was anything lovable
or fun or, you know, free. Like it was like, I'm chained to this version of like, I'm the bad one,
you know? And so it's funny. Cause I look back at like, even when we were doing lady gang TV,
I mean, that was a crazy stressful time for us. We had way too much on our plates and
there was just a lot, but it's like just the way I acted, like I'm actually embarrassed to like
know that there are people who had an experience with me that I don't think is my true self and
they'll carry that for their lives. They'll be like, oh, I worked with her. She was awful.
You know, like I hate that a little bit. Well, but everybody has those moments in their life,
you know, and whether it's with a job or a relationship or a friendship or whatever,
you can't always be on your best behavior. And if you were, it would be really boring.
Right. And I think there's way more to be said for somebody like you, who's made such a,
such an evolution. It's really hard to change, especially when nothing looks broken.
You have everything going for you. You're happy with your success and minimal friendships and
not having to commit to things that was working for you, but you made this crazy, these crazy
steps in improving what to you wasn't even something that needed improving. You're also
somebody who people, we give you such a hard time on this for being crazy. Um, but you're probably
the most thoughtful person. I think of all of us when there've been big moments in our business,
you've been the one coming with cards and Larry David stickers for me and Jack or coming with
gifts or wanting to celebrate us. And if I get a job, you're the most excited person of anybody
in my life. You're you still get giddy when I get an exciting job. So you are such a good person.
And we give you a hard time on this because it's so fun to do that. Totally. And you're just an
easy target. And because you can take it. Jack and I would be we can't take it. I am too fragile
for that. But to, to Becca's point too, you've always been like that. Like, I think that you're
too hard on yourself because that's not something, it's not like this year you've turned into a good
friend, but Becca and I, you've always been such a fantastic friend. I mean, you were there when I
was going through my breakup and I was like on your floor crying. So, and that was four years
ago when we first started the podcast and I barely knew you that much. You know what I mean? So you've
always been like that. I think that maybe now you're starting to realize that you have these
qualities that were always there, but you never saw in yourself because you're too busy being
like, I'm in this corner of a person and I can't have any of these qualities. So I think that you
need to give yourself a little bit more credit because that is who you are on the inside. And
it's always been that way. There's times I think about, I was thinking about a birthday party I
went to in New York City and I was probably like 23, 24. And it was just like, my friend slept with
my other friend. And it was like, I mean, it was just like a riot, you know? And there's a part of
me that like, I'm sad because I know that that era of like celebrating our birthdays and that
kind of thing is over. And it's like, like, I probably won't ever be that wild again in my
life. I'll be wild in a different way. It'll be like in a safe, bougie way with like a nice
margarita. You know what I mean? It's never going to be like, I'm two bucks at a dive bar in the
East village and like, not sure how I'm going to pay my rent tomorrow, but I'm going to spend
all of my cash, which is $40 on drinks. You know what I mean? It's like just that level of debauchery.
It makes me sad that like, I, I wasn't more present in it. Although I guess maybe I was
present. I just, and maybe I won't feel like I was present for this, but I feel like in my
thirties and later thirties, I've been more present in my life. Like, I feel like I know
what happened in my thirties where I don't remember half the shit that happened in my
20s. Like it was just such a go. 20s are traumatic. That's just how it should be though,
right? Like your 20s should be a train wreck in whatever way that it is for yourself, whether it
is because you're partying a lot or you're doing all these things, you're traveling. It's, it should
be a big mess in the 30s or when you start picking yourself up and then the 40s, you're going to
thrive. I feel thrivey. I feel like I'm thrive adjacent. You're thrive adjacent. I'm thrive
adjacent. Like I, I feel excited. I, you know, there's obviously things that I'm going to work
on forever, but I feel like I have a better grasp on what will bring me actual happiness.
Um, and that's a very fulfilling thing. So happy birthday me. I think that we're done.
What's your birthday wish for this year? Wow. The one thing you want more than anything. I want to
be hot. Oh, Jesus Christ. All right. We didn't get anywhere. No. So back to square one. You're
still the little psycho 22 year old that I met. You know, I have, I think my birthday wish has
something to do with the word courage because I, I, it's been easy for me to be courageous during
COVID during all these changes, because every single person in the world is having to be so
courageous right now. It's like, we're just all trying to overcome all the things that are going
on, you know? And it's easy to have big lofty ideas and make shit happen when you can't leave
your house. So I hope that when the world opens up and I do am able to go to someone's dinner or
go to a thing or go on a trip that I have the courage to step away from my work life to live
my personal life. And why I say courage is because it's very hard for me to say no to work things
or to only do things that will better my work. Like go to a party because I know there's people
going to be there that I need to see. Like, I want to continue to have the courage that I've
had to kind of like be like, all right, it's five o'clock. I'm not doing any more work. I'm
going to call a friend. And like, there is no outcome, which is helping me in any way other
than that friendship, you know? So like, God, just don't let the world open again. And we get
like sucked back into the tornado of like achieving and wearing tight. Well, that's where you just
have to be very conscious about and thoughtful with how you're going to live your life once
because I, who knows how everybody is going to assimilate back into society. It feels
strange that that's even an option, you know? So I had to go to Walgreens to pick up a prescription
and i was like i haven't been out of my house in three weeks like i don't know how to socialize i
like walked i've walked my dog but other than that like i haven't been in a place with like
fluorescent lighting i mean becca you probably feel different because you're on set and stuff
but like i was like oh my god i used to come into the walgreens and like snack out card out
whatever and i was like this is so strange and then this person was like i like your dress and
i was like like i haven't talked to anyone that's not so strange i know you're like get ready for
social anxiety times 10 for some reason. Now, when you have exchanges, then you walk away and
you overthink every single piece of it. I don't know what that is. That's added social anxiety
that I had a little bit of, but more now it's weird, but it's going to be so weird when people
go back to what was sort of like talking to strangers within like a foot of you. It's so
awkward it's gonna be so crazy well uh we wish you the best happy birthday um i love me happy
birthday healthy we weren't here for a good time we're here for birthday time for a birthday time
