Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. let's make this quick hello hello hello welcome to the lady gang quickie i am becca here with
Starting point is 00:01:03 jack and kelty and you guys i can't really figure out who kelty looks like right now but it it's a it's a look she's in it looks like a four-year-old is what you're thinking of it's like you know what it is it's like if josie siwa we're 40 jojo siwa jojo jojo she's josie siwa um it's like chasing youth is the look yeah no you look like a like a child which is problematic um no because this is this is why i well first of all everything happens for a reason in lady gang right so today our episode is brought to us by european wax center so their whole thing is about just like being unapologetic and empowered to do the thing that makes you feel best. So if you want to get a bikini wax, it doesn't have to be because someone's going down
Starting point is 00:01:57 on you. It can just be because you feel great when you're like, have a fresh wax or have your grays colored or whatever, or a nail nail polish, like whatever that thing is for you. We're going to talk all about it. But since I moved to the new house, I had to pack everything up and then unpack everything. And one of the things that I found was my bow box. And you're right. You have a bow box wait I don't even know what a bow box is a box of bows I thought it was like some kind of a workout equipment no it's literally a box of bows so I have so many scrunchies that have bows and ribbons and headpieces and I love to wear a top knot with a bow and a ponytail with a bow and And I, I feel okay about it because that's today's episode is this, but I want to let
Starting point is 00:02:51 you know that I wore this scrunchie to sleep and I wore this scrunchie to Ace Hardware yesterday when I was picking out some plaster. So, and I wore it with a pair of sneakers and a baby doll dress. So I am Josie Seawolf. Oh my God. You wore that. I need a picture of you in a baby doll dress, sneakers, and that bow. And a baby backpack, a baby backpack.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Oh my God. Kelsey, this, I don't know. we need this this is 2021 summer of 2021 is age regression expression and age regression when your neck sucks like the skin on my neck is so there's it's not a dr diamond thing it's just my neck no it's your skin i have an old ass neck and when that starts hitting everyone you're gonna want to put a bow in your hair and bring the eye up too listen what this is what this is called is peacocking. And it's what men do sometimes when they wear like a fancy hat or like a sunglass because it catches your attention and makes you want to talk to them. So you're
Starting point is 00:03:54 really, you're peacocking Kelty. This is a pick up artist technique. Yes. This is your fedora, the bow, the four-year-old bow. And like the child look is your fedora. And also for so many years, I had to be on TV and Kevin Frazier, my old co-host would tell me you can't wear a hair accoutrement no one will take you seriously when you're saying the news which is probably true but also you guys aren't talking like politics you're talking about van jones you know what i mean like i'm like no i'm talking about the the latest celebrity marriage but anyway so i didn't wear a hair accoutrement only to like maybe the grammys when i let clay put those glue on rhinestones on my braid this is your new life your new life is bows this is who i am this is you know
Starting point is 00:04:41 welcome to the lady gang wow this is great thank you so much for coming to my ted talk okay i do want to talk about european wax center because i actually went last week and i had a and i don't want to use this pun but i had a rip-roaring good time it was my first wax that i've had in over a year since the pandemic and my first time ever going to a european wax center i have been waxing wrong my entire life i went where they put the wax on with the with the dental stick what do you call like a tongue depressor the time the wooden stick yeah and then they put the paper on it and then they wax that off right yeah no not at the european wax center no you do the comfort wax and the difference is i asked my waxer i was like oh i was like tell me about the comfort wax like
Starting point is 00:05:27 i just thought maybe it had more honey in it or something yeah so the wax when they just put the hard like comfort wax on your skin but not the paper it just pulls up the hair when you go to any other waxer and they put the wax and then the paper it rips off the hair and the skin oh yeah oh yeah no so that's amazing um i just want to tell everyone that european wax center is the country's leading wax expert the salons are super welcoming beautiful uh if you've always waxed or if you felt super embarrassed about someone like maybe seeing your vagina or other parts of your body and you're like i don't know if i can do a wax looks no further be brave it's totally fine our friends at European wax center are there because they're offering every single one of
Starting point is 00:06:10 our members. If you're listening to this right now, I want you to find the European wax center in your town because they're giving you your first wax for free. You can go have a bikini wax right now for free, free 99 free.com free the bikini wax. They do 7.5 million bikinis a year. Um, and the comfort wax is amazing. So go on, follow them. You can use their tracker at European wax. I'm going to tell you a story about European wax center. Oh, okay. I was always to me going to get a wax was like the worst thing you could possibly think of. Like I would dread it. I would do, I would Google every best wax around. I would ask friends and I would always be super disappointed. I started going to the European wax center when I was on tour with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Starting point is 00:06:56 because they have them in every major city for the most part. And I'm telling you, it's the place that turned me into a regular waxer. Cause it's like, it was good. It was clean. It's not as painful. And if you, if you listen back to our podcast from the very beginning, Becca has always been team wax, team wax, team wax, because of the European wax center. I've been going for years and years and years. I'm a frequent flyer. And guess what? I have like a 10th wax free program. Um, it's the first wax free. It's even better. But, um, there's one right outside my neighborhood here. There's one down the street. I can ride my bike to it. It's so exciting. You better start taking hair supplements so you can go all the time. Oh, I do. And it's insane. The amount of
Starting point is 00:07:42 hair that I'm sprouting once a week, sprouted, sprouted may need happen. So waxing is one of those things that I think we think you know we're supposed to do or we have to do as part of like our lady bouquet I'm calling it um but it's secretly kind of empowering like I do feel like it's one of those things that you can do for someone else but you can also really do it for yourself to kind of like feel like you're getting your shit together so today's the topic of today's episode is the things that you know that you do just to empower yourself that you love just because you love it. And it doesn't mean it has to be popular in style like this bow. Okay. So let's start the thing in your closet that you wear constantly. Um, and you love it, but when you
Starting point is 00:08:30 wear it, you know, that it's not chic.com bucket hats. And I have a whole problem with my Instagram followers because I have tried to really make bucket hats a thing. I've tried to make it a thing just like, are they cool? You were like bucket hats. And then it's like 99%. Do you want a lady gang one? I've done so many polls and every single time it's come back 95% no and 5% yes. But you know what? I don't care what anybody thinks because I love a bucket hat. It makes me feel not cool, but it protects my face from the sun. And I think it's cute. So I'm going to continue you wearing them? I don't care how much my followers hate them. Mine would be my very modest dresses. So every time I put on one of my really high neck dresses and really below the knee
Starting point is 00:09:20 and a long sleeve, there's a small percentage of people who appreciate that look. But I'd say the majority, especially of the male persuasion, they don't love my modesty gowns. I love Zach like your modesty gown you know have you ever come out and he'd be like oh you look cute Zach is the first person that I've ever been with who truly appreciates my fashion sense oh so he actually prefers like I think I've talked about it before I'm always like do you want me to wear skimpy things like is that something that's like cool to you he's like no I actually kind of feel like it's kind of cheesy if you do that like for me for me yeah so you know he's into my mom can you imagine like becca in a nice um what's it called high
Starting point is 00:10:08 slit skirt like any clothes that i wear no oh my god no but i was just thinking like one of those like the little spaghetti strap like kind of it's made out of like scuba material like mini dress that girls wear to the club or oh my god love like can you imagine you in a club dress no i i don't even know yeah i mean i wore those back in the day yeah for sure i wore them in my 20s but even in my 20s i wasn't like a huge fan of skimpy skimpy skimpy stuff yeah kelty what's yours i'm going skimpier the better i'm okay um oh i have my my um uh uh festive night sequin jacket that you guys know about oh yes oh my god no it has like uh lots of sequins and i wear it i literally wore it to my friend's wedding i was looking through the photos and i was like
Starting point is 00:11:01 what am i wearing at your wedding oh my god it's a great like just summer jacket when you can't wear a jean jacket you don't want to wear a leather jacket i don't want to wear like a bolero sweater like it's in 2006 what do i wear a wrap a wrap feels old so sequin jacket feels right yeah okay maybe we need to figure out what that is maybe that's the missing piece in our wardrobe and we need to make it that is it is missing it is missing for everybody you're going to but i do a blazer i do like an oversized i wouldn't do it a blazer doesn't work for me but i i don't know what would because it's your other option is like a big shruggy kind of sweater but then you go so casual at a black tie yeah we need like a fancy shrug i love this so much but i will say um i did
Starting point is 00:11:50 have a real big revelation i think it was just a couple weeks ago we were on slack and we're talking about clothes and stuff and jack said something to me that really i have thought about like i could almost cry now thinking about it because it touched my soul so deep we were talking about style and stuff and like what we wear and then she goes yeah but kelty like have you ever really been known for being fashionable and she means that like we're saying this yeah it was on a text i think i remember seeing it and or was it me that said it no it was definitely yeah it was definitely jack and then i was like oh no i mean i i it's not for lack of trying to be fashionable but I'm a fashion follower. Oh, you know what? I think it was something like we were trying to
Starting point is 00:12:42 choose between a couple of things and like Becca and I liked one thing. And then you were like really strongly about something else that like nobody was going to buy. Right. Yeah. That sounds about right. So I, you know, and I was like, oh, and then I realized that like, no, I'm just a show girl. I don't have a fashion sense. I just like to play. That is your fashion. You know what Kelsey, I'm going to go back to this peacocking thing because that's kind of, I feel like that's what you do. The sequined jacket is also a peacock, you know, you're always, you're wearing something that's very standout ish that people are going to comment about. That's your fashion sense. So it's just another reason to go to therapy. Great. Okay. Um, what do you wear in
Starting point is 00:13:26 your closet that you, it looks great, but you secretly hate it. I feel like I did away with all those things um jeans for me like I just I really am over like I I have a couple pairs of jeans where I like to just do a jean and a t-shirt but I was into jeans for a bit and then I've started to put pants on again and I was like you know what I'm meant to be in a baby doll dress these legs yeah these legs are your legs yeah out your legs are meant to be out all right baby dolls forever i also hate a jean i went through a period where i tried to make jeans happen but i get way too claustrophobic in them um mine would be a bra i only wear it on occasion when i must and sometimes when you're on good morning america just kidding she didn't want to
Starting point is 00:14:14 sometimes i don't even do that it's honestly the only time i wear it is if a nip is popping out but I hate it. I hate it. Um, I, I know mine. Okay. Bathing suits, period. Every, every single bathing suit, period. End of story. I hate a bathing suit. Can we go back to wearing swim dresses or like swim costumes? I hate a bathing suit. What if you just showed up in a scuba suit every time you went to the pool? I would, I really would. I was actually thinking about um for perfect attendance in ninth grade this is what this brought this up this swimming um you got to choose if you wanted to go on the day trip to the amusement park or to the water park this is weird as for me i chose the water park which is like i hate a public pool but i
Starting point is 00:15:10 also hate roller coasters so it was like i didn't want to do either i wanted oh you're so fun i'm like can we just stay and go to the library and work on our notebooks like that's what i really wanted for reward day but anyway no we went swimming and i was with my friend tara and i remember she had like huge boobs she got her boobs so early and then i never got boobs and i remember us going but we were like 14 15 and so insecure about the bathing suit of it all because it's like such a weird time like are you doing pubes like are you like my body is weird like we're not sure what nobody's talking about it you don't feel empowered enough to like have those conversations yet with your friends yeah now people do but at the time I didn't and I remember
Starting point is 00:15:51 us going and wearing boxer shorts and huge t-shirts over our bathing suits to swim the whole day like we're literally walking around like wet rags I like that the only problem is once you get it wet and then you're like 50 pounds heavier and it's just dragging all this wet weight on you and then if you really go into it and you think all the stuff that's in public pools now you're just in a sponge of public pool yeah anyway okay this is a question that i think is so fun the makeup makeup item you wear that makes you feel super empowered but it's not like it maybe isn't cool or it's not the look or whatever it is i started doing i mean listen this is not the look a thirties woman doing any tech talk trend makeup look is probably not the
Starting point is 00:16:42 look that you should be doing. However, there is a trend of putting blush over the bridge of your nose. I love it. It makes me feel young. It makes me feel sun kissed and I would have never thought to put blush on my nose. So that's mine. Wait, what do you do? You just, you literally just put blush like right here over the bridge of your nose with the rest of your with the rest and then then blush right here and then over the bridge of your nose and it kind of looks like she did the finger she did flutter fingers she was like and lightly flutter finger here here here here and then here here here here um it's really cute i honestly i looked at it on tiktok i was like this is stupid but then when you do it i do it with like very minimal makeup and just like a
Starting point is 00:17:21 little bit of blush and loving it loving it becca um see i don't really do anything fun and exciting with makeup. However, I have always been a fan in the colder months of a really dark, dark lip, like a dark berry. I knew you were going to say that. And I don't care if it, if it goes in and out of style, I kind of consistently keep it in my makeup and I wear it a lot. I love that. I love a hot pink lipstick in that same way, like a child. And it's like, sometimes it's cool. I probably shouldn't be wearing it at my age but whatever i also think a lash is very empowering like i chris knight is like please don't put those lashes on and i love a lash i love a big lash i love too much lash i love to be one of those people that you're like oh i can really tell
Starting point is 00:18:12 those are fake that's me i love it congratulations good for you ever had a lash extension or you're just like the fakies i've had every lash you've done the last lash extensions don't work for me because I'm very hard on my face and my sleeping. And so they last like two days. Okay, when we come back, more empowering things. Welcome to the OC Bitches. I'm Rachel Bilson and I played Summer Roberts on the OC. I'm Melinda Clark and I played the iconic Julie Cooper on the OC.
Starting point is 00:18:44 We were the OG bitches on Fox's hit show, The OC, back in the early 2000s. Every week we'll go through an episode as we rewatch the series together. We'll discuss the stories, the people who made them, and the drama on and off camera as you've never heard before. Joining us will be former cast members, writers, musicians, and the many people that made The O.C. the cultural phenomenon that it is today.
Starting point is 00:19:06 So be sure to rate, review, and follow Cast Media's new podcast, Welcome to the O.C. Bitches, wherever you listen to your podcasts. You can also check out the video releases each week on YouTube. The Lady Gang. All right, a band or musician you listen to that are not cool, but whenever the music comes on, you're like, yeah. That's a good question, isn't it? I was in hardware yesterday and I heard Ed Sheeran and then Matt Nathanson.
Starting point is 00:19:34 And I was like, they played Matt Nathanson at Ace Hardware. Matt Nathanson is the premier Whole Foods, CVS hardware store, target music. He literally on tour. Jack, you were with me. Oh no. Did you stay for the concert? No, I left. Oh yeah. Okay. well at that concert that you left me at he had a wheel of hits and he spun the wheel to all the songs and one of the um categories was songs you hear at whole foods really and he would just play that coin yeah i don't know if he's getting coined from that but good for him okay anyway um mine is
Starting point is 00:20:10 like literally what my answer has been for any music question that would be machine gun kelly love him so much still he's actually cool now but uh not according to jared so that's my answer jerry's jealous he's jealous he's jealous you know but what can you do jared is so much better looking than machine gun kelly hell yeah i mean machine gun kelly's pretty hot now but no he's cheesy hot he's i mean he's also lengthy talk about regressing in age he's like in his mid-30s and acting literally like a 17 year old but somehow it's working and it works for me because it makes me feel nostalgic and angsty yeah i understand pecca um mine the other day i don't know if this is it's not uncool but it's uncool for me and i was driving down the road and i had
Starting point is 00:21:00 the windows down and i was blasting justin bieber and i think it's sad to see a 35 year old woman i get my peaches out in georgia that's the only song i don't enjoy i don't like his new record i don't like it i i just think you know i have some issues i could do a whole podcast on this new album which is also embarrassing um that's a great idea we should do like a track by track review one episode okay put it in the calendar embarrassing um also i love steely dan i love and i think people might think it's uncool but i love i love steely dan are you jealous of my signed steely dan poster i mean not really i feel like signatures on things this is a little weird like i've never really been like oh i wish i could get that steely dan autograph i don't
Starting point is 00:21:47 understand a signature it's never made sense to me no no okay well that's rude first of all and second of all uh what if your husband worked for the band so that's different like a signed thing as a gift that's more personal that i understand that it's like yeah it's a gift it's not if it was left over in the mail room and no one else wanted it so he just took it home that's amazing still technically a gift and it's sentimental for him he worked on it you know there's a reason i guess so it used to be fun when chris had cool clients and i would go in and i just like go to the merch store get their stuff that is fun okay um tv show that you watched because everyone else was like oh my god are you watching palmer crash and then you actually thought it sucked
Starting point is 00:22:35 oh i have a very controversial one it's but everybody knows that yours is bridgerton isn't it it was bridgerton but my actual controversial one is friends and i stand by it you hate friends she hates friends i think friends is the most unfunny show in the entire world i'm team seinfeld forever even when it was that thanksgiving episode and reese witherspoon and brad pitt were on it listen i it's not the type of humor that's like funny yeah it's tough it's tv humor it's like multicam tv it's like fun it's like a big bang theory humor that was that's what i would equate it to big bang theory is actually way wittier like it's smarter humor smarter comedy than friends friends is it i get it it's not it's not laugh out loud no it's just not good anyways
Starting point is 00:23:30 next person wow I know it's controversial but literally our entire fan base just left thank you for being in the lady gang we'll miss you I have the Seinfeld half that's all I need oh I have something that could literally get me kicked out of the business if I admit to this but I'm gonna do it what is it I never finished it so I probably didn't stick it out long enough for everybody that's like but you have to finish it fleabag oh I've never even never watched it it's like the biggest very critically acclaimed though yes very and i think she is being talented who's in it phoebe uh waller's waller yeah i don't think that's it she's a singer i mean it's i think it's it is critically acclaimed i just i couldn't do it no okay i have two both shocking
Starting point is 00:24:21 number one Handmaid's Tale I got to the episode when he was having sex with her and then the wife was on top and I was like so disturbed that this is not for me if I'm gonna watch something on television if I'm gonna sit myself down and not be doing something I enjoy like crafting or embroidery then I better be enjoying this it was too upsetting for me so I couldn't finish it game of thrones watched one episode oh yeah too dark i can't watch something that's that dark too dark they're in caves too many times having meetings with a bunch of people that look the same i can't i could not get the characters together because it needed to be a little bit lighter a little bit like for my eyes i felt like i needed that light that becca had in vancouver
Starting point is 00:25:13 so you don't get seasonal depression while i was watching the screen because it was so dark i was like is the contrast up chris i'm like i can't tell are they on a dragon are they in the daytime nighttime like everything was that color of gray and i was like this is not gonna work for me i watched one episode there is a you know what other show is like that but is amazing is ozark ozark has this like blue lens on it it's like a dark blue everything is blue but you can the characters at least look differently and they're not in a cave while it's blue so that's the difference it was such a sad time for me when like the end of game of thrones was happening and everyone was taught like it's all everyone i couldn't leave my house i had nothing to talk about with people i was like
Starting point is 00:25:54 i was so annoyed i felt so stupid i'm like i can't wait that's how i feel about the bachelor every season um okay two more questions most empowered powering thing you ever did for yourself mine is just making my own money and not having to rely on a man i've had too many to even count oh what make it rain becks um i would say you're trying to snap into the mic jack but you just did a little swish like you're putting blush on again No. Oh, okay. Snaps. I'm snapping. I mean, I feel like every day I make a decision that feels empowering for me, but I'd say the fertility stuff is pretty empowering. Like not being a victim to it and just taking control. I love that. I love that. Yeah. I remember after
Starting point is 00:26:53 you got kind of done, you were like, I feel like a weight is like off me. Yeah. Once we froze those embryos, I was like, damn, you know what time you don't, you don't have to be on my side, motherfucker. Yeah. Time. That's right. I will wear a bow and a little dress and freeze my embryos. You know, those are very comparable, the bow and the dress and then freezing embryos after having fertility problems. It's basically the same. Okay. The last thing I wanted to ask each of you that i think we've never talked about in the history of lady gang is where do you get your confidence from oh i'm sure we've talked about this yeah i know um instagram likes oh my god i'm joking couldn't be further from that is honestly the best 12 hours of my life
Starting point is 00:27:46 is when they turn the likes off accidentally that like one day they turned them off and wow i'm so free and they're like never mind just kidding back on just kidding you're in psychological prison again yes um awful i love that meme though that's like hey if you're gonna take a break from instagram you don't have to tell everyone and yeah yeah the best gonna take a break yeah it's not a what is it it's not an airport you don't need to announce your departure like also i would never notice like the algorithm doesn't i went through the other day and i was looking at all the people i want to see things from and how i never see that so i went in and liked and commented on their post so they'll like go to the algorithm but i was like i'm literally
Starting point is 00:28:33 seeing josie because he was on the podcast like last jerry had a baby all i see is his post i met the guy like four times like i'm deeply in his family life so random i know and we should all say the person that we're deeply in their lives, but we're not sure how that's a great topic. It's so crazy. I'm like, what am I like? Why am I so invested in you? Ashley Spivey is another one. She went, we were on the bachelor together and I have never seen her since it was 15 years ago. I'm like the dog. I watch it run to the hallway every day. She is the baby. I know so much. I know what book she's reading. I'm like, where did you get that desk? Like west elm well you're obviously probably commenting on her shit i don't know what is
Starting point is 00:29:19 happening is so wow i'm trying to figure out like who my person is like me too and then i and then i got to a point that i hated people so much i started muting all the people and now it's literally just home decor like my whole instagram that i wake up in the morning like let me just look at couches here for a second yeah mine's home decor and dogs but i'm like do i need anything other than that nope no not really becca where do you get your confidence from i mean i don't know i think did you get it from the peaches down in georgia no i didn't get it from the beaches down in georgia um i mean my friends and my family make me feel pretty confident anytime i'm my confidence is wavering i'll usually make a phone call to someone like that you know my sister when
Starting point is 00:30:05 my confidence is wavering with my personal life and then other friends in the industry that deal with the same like professional insecurities so yeah friends and fam what's it called when you are like a nut bag and like you get your confidence because you have a a high level of self-confidence like a narcissist narcissist yes yes thank you for coming isn't it like a is this psychological disorder when you have like born or created narcissists are born oh really it's like a mania like you live like kind of above the fray of like a psychopath yeah like narcissistic tendencies you just you're you have it's like you're just born with it yeah but my therapist would disagree and she says that i'm
Starting point is 00:31:00 the way i am because i didn't get enough in love in my childhood shit because i don't think because my brother was a lot a lot of stuff was going on with my brother always and i was always hiding in a corner and i was always like looking for people like i just wanted to be perfect and have everything great so that people would be like oh my god in this corner we have perfection and celebrate her but she never got celebrated because we were like in let's keep the you know let's let's focus all the energy. And that's not my parents' fault. It's no one's fault. It's just the way it is. And like, there's always a dynamic like that in families. I don't think you're a narcissist because I know many. Um, and, and I think that there's a, a through line with all of them that
