It's time for a quickie.
Podcast One presents The Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie.
Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek.
Let's make this quick.
Hello, hello, hello.
Welcome to the Lady Gang Podcast.
This is Kelty.
I'm sitting here with Christina Perry.
We have just recorded a 35-minute long podcast.
We laughed, we cried, we talked about everything.
And I just realized we didn't have the SD card in the machine,
and it possibly is lost forever.
I want to tell you that I don't know what the f*** is going on with this year,
but I told you a few episodes ago that I'm at the end of my f***ing rope,
and i can't take any more drama and here we are so we are recording this episode as a safety
in case i cannot find this episode um let me do your intro again christina has a new record a
lighter shade of blue it is out now it is so wonderful it's her first album since 2014's
had her heart for album albums she's had lullabies since for both carmella and rosie um and if you
don't know christina you obviously do but you know she wrote your wedding song the song you
walk down the aisle your first dance a thousand years she wrote that jar of hearts she's a diamond
selling artist my favorite artist on the planet and um i'm so excited to welcome her to the podcast
because we have a new record christina perry hello do you just want to like cry no it's okay
it should happens i mean we i had we had a great conversation even if it was just for us
it's just that you're so eloquent in the stories and everything so okay so we're going to give the
abridged version all good here's what i want to know yes a lighter shade of blue a because it's
a lighter shade of blue i know you're still sad which is good so anyone who thinks christina has
grown up and that she's not passively aggressively heartbreakingly going to write you sad songs
we're covered yes um the truth is that um honestly life has been so hard since my life seemingly got
good that, um, I'm, I don't think I'm going to disappoint people with my content and what I'm
singing about. I feel like, um, my version of like, like my filter that I see the world through
is always going to be a little bit crooked and a little bit blue. Um, and so I've learned,
I don't mind Kelly kisses. I, um, I have learned that, you know, I don't know that I keep growing
and turning into this person that I really want to be, but only really through pain.
And so the songs that I'm writing about, um, the things I'm writing about on this record
really, uh, are genuinely painful, you know, um, surrendering to the fact that everything
I planned doesn't work out and, you know, being married, but like not being sure if
I'm going to stay married.
Um, you know, having a daughter grow up in the scariest version of our world ever, uh,
miscarriage.
i have a song you know about death grief i mean you know there's nothing i'm afraid to sing about
um and so honestly i feel like it's totally my lane too like i feel like i've stayed
somewhat in the uh same realm i've always been in so like my record from 2011 and from 2014
and this record all feel connected they feel like you know i'm the same person i'm just like
growing up a bit and like sharing about it maybe in a more deeper way but i also feel like all the
people listening are growing up with me and so like right now we're dealing with possibly you
know marriage or possibly children or possibly grief um which you know no one told me and when
i was 20 that i'd be singing about that when i'm 35 but like here we are and i've never not told
the truth so i feel like this record is a collection of you know the past six years of my
life and we've all had a really hard six years like i don't know anyone who's like i've had the
best couple years it's really going well for me obviously me um yeah so i like i like your
explanation of the title a lighter shade of blue and the song that finishes off the album and like
because i think one of the things that i i always i think of in therapy always is like we are never
all happy or all sad or all good or all bad like anyone that's waiting for their life to be like
okay when i get the job when i get this money when i find my person when i have this baby like
then I will be happy, but that there's no destination where it just stays good forever.
There's like, it has to be up and down. And so a lighter shade of blue is like just such a
brilliant way to look at it. Thank you. I feel like it explains so much to me about, um, Kelly
just wants to sit on my lap. Um, to me, a lighter shade of blue feels like the, when I wrote the
song blue and the lyric is in that song, it's sort of the moment I knew what I wanted this album to
be about because I did realize that I had changed so much from my twenties, right? But I stopped
trying to be a completely different person, if that makes any sense. So I grew up, but I finally
accepted my true self and my, my nature, right? The part of me that I've been trying to change
all of my twenties and into my thirties and only through pain and suffering that I finally
surrender. But that is where I found the freedom. And so I realized that like, you know, I was
always trying to not be the sad girl, you know, and not be like, you know, the one blue, I just
didn't want to be that color. And I was super against it and tried everything I could possibly
try to change the color I am. And then I realized it's cool. You know, this is just, I don't know,
something happened. I don't know if it was just motherhood. I don't know if it was just getting
older, if it was trauma, you know, I don't know what exactly, uh, changed it completely. But I
just remember the moment where I was like, wow, I'm, I'm actually pretty awesome the way I am.
And you know, I'm sensitive for a reason and I'm a songwriter for a reason. And I just stopped
trying to be someone different and then all of a sudden that was acceptance and then I was like
oh and so if I am blue then let me just try to be a lighter version of myself and so like
I have gone from a very dark place to a very bright place but I'll never change you know who
I am in my core and my guts you know are definitely as emo as they come and um but I I am so I'm so
much healthier, you know? And I just also think that it's a good trajectory to show people that
you can be that and you don't have to be a different person. You can just work on who you
are and, uh, and get to be the version of you that you kind of dreamed about being.
Well, it's interesting. And like, when I hear you say this, I think about like even our friendship,
which is like, and female friendships in general, which is something we talk about on the podcast
all the time. And like in your twenties, it can be really hard because everyone's like figuring out
and putting on different pieces of themselves. And there's something in like a long-term adult
friendship where you're like, you know what? I know Christina doesn't want to make a plan.
Like she doesn't want to be like, Hey, three Tuesdays from now, like we're like my favorite
thing. Christina does is just like, I'll find you later. Like there's no pressure. Like I may need
to crawl in a hole for a few days. I may not be able to, uh, take in anything, but like, I'll let
you know i'll find you later you know and it's like there's just something about kind of sitting
and realizing the person that you're you are and being okay with that even if it's like
you know like whatever that is funny that you this is a good example of like you make that
room for your friend but you never make that room for yourself right like you don't right like you
like i i accept you in every way you are and i know you know you're not going to tell me the
truth until at minute 45 of us hanging out yeah you know what i mean like there are things about
us that we know and love and appreciate and and support and allow to just be right and then like
we end up spending our whole lives not doing that for ourselves and so it's weird i feel like i've
like been surrendered like i've kind of just been been i don't know cut down in so many ways like
with everything that's been going on the past couple years where like i just had to make room
for myself to accept who I am or like to be gentle to myself, which sounds so cheesy,
but like, I love the word gentle.
Yeah.
Just give yourself some grace.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
I don't think I did that until I was like 34 and a half.
And then all of a sudden now I'm 35 and a half and I'm like, Oh, this is what it looks
like when I'm like not the meanest person on earth to me because I'm not mean to literally
anyone on earth other than me.
I know.
and uh and so it is really nice to see that in your friendship because and you do have to be
friends for long enough to be able to do that but i feel like that's a really good point like
that's kind of what this album has been for me too it's kind of like a coming of age but like
not the cute coming of age stories that we read like the perks of being wallflower when we're 15
right like coming of age like in our 30s like and accepting who we are so it really is just that
in like you know song form so i was recently on a boat out in lake travis and austin having a
wonderful summer day sipping on what a cores light that's right it's my favorite summer beer and fun
fact cores introduced the first recyclable aluminum can in the 50s and later introduced
cash for cans kicking off aluminum recycling in america now they're removing plastic rings
entirely and using a new more sustainable cardboard wrap pack instead that's why we
love this beer. We love a chill beer that cares about the environment, don't we? So according to
National Geographic, 91% of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced since the 50s still isn't
recycled. That's why Coors is committed to becoming the largest beer brand in North America
to remove plastic rings by 2025. We love them so much. And also, all major Coors Light breweries
are zero waste landfill meaning 99.99 of waste is reused or recycled reach for the beer that's
made to chill and made for a more sustainable future get Coors Light delivered straight to

So I want to jump in a moment.
I'm going to ask Christina to tell you a Chris Martin story,
but because this is so important,
I kind of want it to be right at the top of the show.
Many of you know, but I'll give you the Kohl's notes, I guess.
But Christina lost her daughter, Rosie, at eight and a half months.
And it was pretty public.
And I can't imagine you had to go through that in the public eye.
And she was a dark shade of blue, a very dark shade, and has kind of a year and a half later
kind of come out of that and is now sitting across from me in Los Angeles four and a half
months five months pregnant five months pregnant with a new baby um which we're so excited about
but you like we always I always say like you're like an Erin Brockovich but you've been like that
forever like when I first met you you were like really investigating why the Beatles broke up or
like then you were like investigating why the pipes in your house had mold and then you're
investigating like the best leafy green to eat and like where the farm is and how you're gonna get
the leafy green from the, you know, like you're an investigator and you really put yourself into
action. So take me to Rosie. Um, and then, you know, what has happened and what you have found
out and what you want. Every single woman who is planning on getting pregnant is currently
pregnant is thinking about getting pregnant in the future. Know someone who is possibly getting
pregnant. Basically all of the women except the Kelty's of the world. Why do you want them to
know? Well, even the Kelty's of the world know people who want to have a baby or are pregnant.
So yes, basically everyone on earth, listen up.
Um, so yeah, so I did lose my daughter Rosie at 34 weeks pregnant and, uh, it was absolutely
the worst thing in the whole wide world to go through.
Um, I will say that when it happened, um, I was very shocked and I did not turn into
Erin Brockovich right away.
I went through, um, you know, EMDR therapy.
I went through a lot of therapy and family therapy. And for me, my husband, my daughter,
one day I woke up and I was wondering what happened. And, um, I will say that, you know,
some people don't want to know. And I, my personality, I was like, oh, I must know.
Um, specifically because I have a healthy Carmela, my daughter, who's four is completely perfect.
And my pregnancy was very normal. And then I had two pregnancy losses in a row, one at 11 weeks,
one at 34 weeks. Um, both were difficult. Um, but obviously losing Rosie was way harder. And, um,
I refused to believe that there was nothing wrong and I did all the tests. So all the tests that you
could do in an autopsy for her, all the tests you could do for me, for Paul, I had had every test
in my pregnancy that was normal and everything was normal. So I was so confused. And when all
my doctor said that there was nothing odd, um, I refused to believe them. And so what I did is I,
I moved back to Los Angeles. I was living in New York. I moved back to LA to this, went to this
doctor who I had been seeing for years, who I knew was like a genius OBGYN. And she also just
liked me. We were friends. So I knew she would sit with me and take the time to hear me. And,
you know, as I tried to advocate for my own health, that she would be helpful. And we sat
down together and she said to me, she went through all my paperwork and she said, Christina, I have
a hunch. She said, they get mad at me when I do this, but I'm going to test you for, for something.
And at the time I, I, I heard her and I was like, what did she just say? Like who, who gets mad?
Yeah. Who? Right. And, but I, I honestly like went in and out and I was just like, well,
I probably don't have that because like, well, how could we miss something is sort of my,
thinking. And, uh, and so she called me a week later and she said, um, you tested positive for
a blood clot. And she said, and what that means is that that would be the cause of death in her
opinion for my child at 11 weeks and Rosie at 34, not what I thought it was. And then she said
that, um, the protocol is that you don't test women for this unless they've had three or more
losses. She said, that is normal. That is the, what everybody follows. Um, and she said, but I
have, I had a feeling that you might have this. It's just bananas. Like if you really sit and be
like, you have to go through the, Oh my God, I missed my period. Oh my God, I'm pregnant. The
celebration, the whatever's happening in your life, three full times, three times until, you
know, basically everyone in your life is affected and potentially any time it could be first
trimester, second trimester, third trimester, there's no even saying when.
And so she said, I tested positive for this.
And so there was a part of me that was relieved that I figured out what, because then I said,
well, what do you do about it?
And she said, well, you just take blood thinner next time.
And I was like, that's it.
And she's like, yeah, you would take like a baby aspirin or, or Blovenox or Heparin,
you know, there's all these things and there's no risk to taking them.
and like, she said, don't worry, we'll get you pregnant again. We'll give you blood thinner and
you can have a baby who's alive. And I was like, okay. And so I take on this information and I
remember I was, I was like walking on a treadmill and I got so angry and I wasn't necessarily angry
that I didn't know about this, even though of course, like, I wish I did. I became angry for
like every woman in the world. And I was like, you're telling me that people don't know about
this because you know and I'm not even talking like I try to do everything all the research I
try to know everything I'm very healthy and I still miss this so that means everyone doesn't
know if I didn't know it means mostly everyone doesn't know unless they have it in their family
history or whatever so that's when I started my investigation and I and I like hired a team
and I was like okay so it's probably super rare and it probably doesn't affect everybody and then
my research came back weeks later, actually 55% of women with multiple miscarriages is caused,
you know, by this blood clot issue. And I was like, Oh my God, that's it. So I immediately
started petition like me, a couple of lawyers, a couple of healthcare professionals. I interviewed
OBGYNs and some experts. And I looked at the finances cause I was like, well then surely it
must be expensive. That's why. And then I looked and it's one CC of blood and it's one extra test
in the prenatal screening, then you already do 25. So it's absolutely no extra money. So I was
just blown away every step of the way. And I was like, okay, so I presented my case to the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and we are working together to get this changed. Now,
the only issue is it's going to take a while because everything is slow. So as we're working
on this, I still wanted to tell the whole world, Hey, this is what I found out. These are the facts.
I don't know what's going on and why a lot of women are having stillborns, why a lot of women
are getting these blood clotting issues but it's an issue that nobody's being tested for
so all you have to do is ask your doctor for the test ask them to test you for blood clots
and genuinely this could be the difference between life and death between your baby
I just like I don't know how what I'm supposed to say after that because it's just like
I know it's a lot it's not a lot it's like it I get so angry and then I get so sad and then I
kind of like, kind of can weirdly picture like Rosie dancing in heaven being like, um, yeah,
I got the memo. I got the, like, I'm the smartest girl in the world. Like I, you know, I think it
was her, her, I don't think it was why it happened, but I think that someone said to me one time,
like, what if Rosie's life was only supposed to be 34 weeks? And I was like, well, that's not,
you know, I didn't like that. And then I sat with it for a while and I was like, wait a second,
Like maybe, like maybe Rose is onto her next thing and her entire purpose was to come and
teach me this so that because I am strong enough, I am like ballsy enough to go and
present this stuff and not care what anyone says.
I will never stop until this changes.
I said this to like the board.
I was like, cool.
I don't care if this takes 30 years.
I have nothing else to lose and only babies to save.
I was like, so literally move over, we're going for it and it's going to happen, but
it's just obviously really slow.
So that's why I'm also like, you know, shouting it from the rooftops now, but I just feel
like maybe that is Rosie.
That was truly her purpose.
And, and it was given to me because I thought that, and I was like, wait, I can't be the
only person that has gone through this and that is speaking up about this.
And then I realized actually, because of my platform, people take me serious.
People are listening to me, people, you know, I'm going to go on people magazine and good
morning American today show. So it is me. I have to do this. Like I, I want to, it's all I want
is to help women not go through what I went through families, not to go through what I went
through. Carmela was in therapy because of us losing Rosie and we didn't have to lose her.
If I had blood thinner, we potentially would not have lost her. So I don't want that to happen to
literally anyone else. And the only way to change this, just like women's health progresses as it
needs to, when it needs to, this is the time for every single woman to ask their doctors about this
blood clotting issue and get tested for it. And if their doctors say, I don't think you need that,
you'd be like, well, I heard about it from Christina Perry. So I'd actually feel safer
if you just did it since it's free. And then they could be like, oh wow. Okay. You, you might get a
blood clot. So maybe you want to take blood that like, whatever, just, it's all about giving the
women the information. I'm we're over this season of life where women don't get to know it all.
So I am, you know, helping further this narrative and moving the needle that, Hey, whatever it is, the woman still deserves to know. So if you have antibodies in your system that might make a blood clot, might not, whatever, you can decide what to do. You have to decide for yourself. Yeah.
so everyone listen up, share this episode. It's very important. I mean, I know that you're going
to see this, but you're also going to see her in people magazine. So it's like, you know,
share one of those two things. Um, and, and let's support Christina, a lighter shade of
blues out now, go take a listen. Tell me what you love. You know, I'll be posting the crap out of
it. I'm so, so excited for you to hear the record. I'm so sorry that, um, I deleted the first version
of this, but then I got, it's like actually my secret way of getting Christina to stay and look
me in the eye for 10 minutes. I'll talk to you forever. Um, okay. Christine. Oh yes. And if you
want more information or you're not following Christina already head over to her Instagram
at Christina Perry. She posts a ton and she's always taking, you know, doing question and
answers and stuff about her Aaron Brockovich. I can't wait for you to change the world. Thank
you for coming. We're here for a long time, but we're here for a good time. Thanks for listening.
