Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which
means it's going to be awesome.
It's time for a quickie.
Podcast One presents The Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie.
Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek.
Let's make this quick.
Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to The Lady Gang.
We have a special guest today.
Sometimes you don't get one and you might be sick of the three of us by now.
So Kelty, who do we have?
Oh, we're very excited.
Our guest today is someone that I met during a life-changing weekend at Create and Cultivate.
She's a mom, a nutritionist, a wellness coach, and an Amazon best-selling author of the 1-1-1 diet
who has personally inspired me.
It is the summer of health.
We are getting back on track this summer.
If you're sick of counting calories, endlessly working out, or discouraged by never seeing results,
She is your girl with one simple solution.
For every meal, eat one protein, one carb, and one fat.
Craving pizza?
Eat it.
Pasta?
Eat it too.
If you stick with the ratio, nothing is off limits.
She's also been quoted in Oprah Magazine, Women's Health, and Glamour.
Please welcome to the show, she's also wearing a leopard print V-neck.
Jack Vanek wants to rock.
This is a me outfit for sure.
It really is.
Rania Bataina.
Perfect.
Yeah.
I'm just so embarrassed that like, I know it. And then I like, I'm no, I'm going to screw it up.
And also Kelty mispronounces normal words. So the fact that she got your name right
on the first try, I did practice all morning. Yeah. I love it. Thank you.
Congratulations on the book. Thank you so much. So where did the inspiration for this come from?
Well, basically in my practice, I was finding that clients were coming in with seemingly
healthy food logs. You know, they thought they were eating all the right things, nuts and avocado
and oatmeal and granola, but their meals were like cluttered, right? So like they had two carbs or
two fats or, you know, three proteins and you didn't need it, right? You don't need a burrito
with chicken and beans, right? You can pick chicken or beans and you're going to get your
protein. So when I started looking at their food logs, I started slimming down their meal plans.
And so their breakfast would be a combination of one protein, one carb and one fat. So if they had
the oatmeal, we take the fruit out and then put in a fat like nut butter or almonds and then have
a protein like a latte or a Greek yogurt on the side. Well, that sounds delicious. Yeah. Like a
latte into the diet. Right. I mean, you can drink coffee and lose weight. You don't have to give
coffee for a lot of people. Isn't really the problem. That's true. Well, I drink coffee.
That's not, that's not a problem. Yeah. Yeah. And so then you came up with this and you'd been
practicing this for a long time before the book came out. Yeah. I've been using this strategy
with my clients for over 13 years now. And so it's been working. I've had experience working
with patients in bariatric clinics who had gone in for lap band or gastric bypass. And by using
this formula, they opted out of surgery. I mean, it's absolutely life changing. Yeah. It's life
changing. Yeah. And I know that you have been in magazines and stuff, but you had brought in this
woman lost like 150 pounds or whatever. Tell us about that. My client, Jeanette, she found the
book, her sister had referred her to connect with me, um, and to check out the book. And so one day
I got an email from Jeanette and she said, I've lost a hundred pounds in the last year. And I was
like, this is amazing. Like, I was like, you're incredible. And so she was interviewed in a
magazine and, um, she actually has lots, 152 pounds and has kept it off for four years.
I mean, and she's running, uh, she's running and her life is changing. She quit smoking.
she quit drinking. I mean, this woman has transformed her entire life on the 1-1-1 diet.
And I spoke with her a couple of weeks ago and she's like, I have to thank you so much. Like
you've changed my life. And just hearing that from someone is just so amazing. And I feel so
lucky to be a part of these women and men's journeys, you know, but the majority of my
clients are women. But let's talk about the headline on that magazine. Yeah. All right.
So unfortunately they said that she lost 152 pounds on keto for carb lovers and there's nothing
keto about the one, one, one diet. And so this really upset me. I think it's a shame that,
you know, media wants to promote, you know, false hopes, especially for women. Like if you can't
lose 10 pounds this month and you're a failure, like that's terrible. And so I think when we,
you know, reign this whole idea of quick weight loss back in, we're going to be more successful
because if these diets work, then women wouldn't be overweight or struggling or on a different diet
every 10 days. So it's unfortunate they used a false headline. Um, but when you read the story,
you really learn more about Jeanette and how she restructured her meals and started building them
using one, one, one. Wow. And so, but keto, you can't be on forever because people right now it's
that it's the, it's the juice cleanse, right? It's the, like, I'm going to try keto because
there's a million keto recipes right now and I can Instagram it, but, but you know, it's not
sustainable and that's the problem. And the thing with diets is you go on and off of them. The one,
one, one diet, although the word diet is in the title diet actually means what are you eating?
So some people have a vegetarian diet.
Some people eat meat.
Some people are gluten-free.
Some people are vegan.
That's the nature of your diet.
But then you can put one, one, one into practice.
And so you pick your protein, your carb, and your fat.
You're actually very, everything you eat is intentional.
Like nothing's random anymore.
Like you make the choice.
Like do you want a cocktail tonight?
Skip the carb at dinner.
It's that easy.
Do you want pancakes at breakfast?
Don't get the mimosa.
You have to make choices.
And so when you're in charge of your food choices, you're actually more successful.
Why does it work?
It works because over the course of the day, you're naturally going to reduce your caloric intake.
So like I said, if you are slimming down a meal, like getting rid of what I call a double, so like two carbs at dinner would be like bread and pasta.
You have to pick one.
So by picking one, you eliminate the calories from the other food.
So just over the course of the day, you're naturally slimming everything down and you're going to lose weight.
but you're still going to eat the foods you love and you're going to learn how to eat and that's
what i really focus on in my practice is teaching women how to eat because you can go online you
could pick up a new book they'll tell you what to eat but like then what yeah it's like well it's
like sometimes i want to eat the birthday cake of course you do and i want to eat cupcakes with my
son yeah so you just don't do that on pasta night that's right you you have like salmon and salad
and a cupcake and you're happy and you're alive and well and i like that because it's an attainable
way of living it's sustainable and it's not scary and you're not scary and you're not cutting out
cookies for the rest of your life right like how long can you deprive yourself it's only so long
and like i had to binging when you're depriving yourself totally i had a reader um send me a
message she said i cannot eat another spoon of cauliflower rice like she can't do it she's like
She literally wrote that and I was like, you poor woman.
Well, like you've gone, right?
Oh, I've done like keto.
I've done.
And that was the thing.
It's like, it's just not sustainable.
It's like, you have to be so hyper-focused on that one thing that everything else in
your life sort of falls away.
And then you realize that every thought, all your energy, all your money, like everything
is going for this one niche thing that you can't even sustain.
And then it makes you sad.
It does make you sad.
See, that's the worst part.
And also you're cutting a very healthy macronutrient, carbohydrates, right?
So the macro diet is also very popular.
The difference between one, one, one, where you're building your meal with protein, carb, fat, and then counting macros is on one, one, one.
You don't count anything except counting to one, one serving of, one cup of oatmeal, one serving of protein.
What about veggies?
Veggies are free foods.
You can eat as many as you want.
Wow.
It's so great.
So then at the, so then are you having, so one, one, one, you're having three, say for breakfast, are you doing three one, one, ones?
No, one protein, one carb and one fat.
But three times a day?
Yeah, and you can have snacks too, of course.
So like fueling between meals is really important because if you get to lunch and you're starving, that's not a good idea.
So you want to snack between lunch and dinner as well because what happens is if you're hungry, maybe dinner will satisfy you, but then it's like eight o'clock and you're like, what am I going to eat?
I'm so hungry opening up the cabinet you're going to the fridge like you're starving and that's
because there's some imbalance during your day so you just have to really look at what you're doing
and and understand how it's impacting you so I also say like no food is good or bad each food
has a different benefit from a health perspective but also like if you eat this way you're either
going to maintain your weight you might lose you might end up gaining so when you look at it with
that mindset you become more kind to yourself you know you're going to stop punishing yourself
And even the other day, a woman emailed me and she said, can I eat fruit on this?
It's like, of course, like that's natural, like antioxidants, fiber, like sweetness.
People haven't been eating fruit for decades.
It's really so terrible.
I just don't understand.
What is the fruit?
Fruit.
Carb.
It's a carb.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There you go.
So smart.
People are so afraid of it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's terrible.
It's crazy.
Enjoy an orange, bitches.
God made it for us.
Eat some berries, girl.
Eat some berries.
Can I just ask one more question?
Obviously, like, I'm thinking of if I was told I could eat one carb at every meal, I'd probably have, like, a heaping bowl of macaroni and cheese.
Like, you obviously, like, serving size plays in.
Of course.
How do you do that?
So portions are illustrated in the book.
There's lists, protein, carb, and fat lists, and the portions are in there.
Got it.
So one cup of oats, one tablespoon of nut butter, one ounce of almonds.
Everything's there for you.
It's so easy.
Okay.
Yeah.
Cute.
Thanks. All right. When we come back, we're going to answer your questions about diet
and lifestyle and eating. The Lady Gang. And we're back. Consuming alcohol.
What is the best alcoholic drink to order? If you are going to use it as your carb of the night.
Right. Is there, I mean, I know the mimosa full of orange juice and like high fructose
grenadine is probably not the best choice. So what, like, what do you think people should
drink? Well, I think like you want to keep it simple and clean. I'm not saying like
throw back some shots every night. You know what I mean? But like something light, I mean,
I don't know, Jack and Coke have the real Coke though. Don't have diet Coke because it's just
full of artificial sweeteners. I'm off the sauce right now, but she has a diet Coke. I'm two weeks
off. Oh good. You know, just soda is a carb fitted in. Yeah. Don't drink a bottle a day,
but stop with the artificial stuff. All right. Next question. People are asking,
what's the verdict on low fat, fat free versus full fat food? So I know you're saying you got
to have a fat, right? But you're meaning like avocado. You're not meaning like Doritos.
Well, okay. So there are certain foods that fall into the carb fat category and that would be like
a pastry or chips or, um, I don't know, brownies, cookies, all that stuff. They fall into the carb
fat, right? So you're going to pick like, okay, I'm going to have a salad and then they have a
brownie that's my because that's your cob and your fat yeah exactly now i yes i want you to eat real
fat i want you to eat avocado i want you to eat nuts i want you to eat seeds and nut butters and
everything but fat falls into our diet from different foods you know like desserts or even
red meat has fat so i don't go either way if the food you're eating is lower in fat like low fat
greek yogurt that's fine you don't have to go to a full fat greek yogurt okay yeah all right i like
that um what is the worst food for bloating or and does it vary for everyone i think everybody's
body is different um i think it's how you eat actually like if you're eating like let's say
you're like overeating at night after you've gone out drinking you're gonna feel bloated right it's
the behavior of it's how you're eating it's how fast you're eating um i think when you don't drink
enough water you might feel bloated i think if you don't have enough vegetables you feel bloated
I don't like to ever say that one food is good or bad.
That's really my thing.
I love that.
Good.
I'm glad.
Pros and cons of intermittent fasting.
So intermittent fasting has gained a lot of attention for multiple reasons.
I think the one of the benefits is that it actually stops you at the end of the day,
right?
There's this certain time you're like, I'm not going to eat after this.
I'm just going to stop.
And so whether that time is four or five, six, and then you're going to do that 16 hour
fast, that's totally fine.
but remember during the day you you do want to eat healthy you don't want to eat junky and then say
oh i'm fasting and then you stop at four so i'm not opposed to it some of my clients they do have
it integrated into their program i'm not against it it's not in the book but it can be something
you incorporate into your life and when you do that are you still having those three meals a day
oh yeah definitely they're just closer together they're a little closer together and so maybe
your portions will be less because you're eating more frequently closer in time but that's also an
advantage right but what does the fasting do it just allows your body to like poop well no not
it kind of i can't reach that right in some ways it can like yeah like reset you it gives you more
time to digest that can also be good for bloating um and minimizing that um a lot of people are
burning fat longer right so like i said if you eat good during the day you're going to have that
opportunity to burn fat longer um and then that that stop time is really important for a lot of
people because sometimes it's after six and you just don't know what to do with yourself you can't
Control yourself.
You start eating.
You know what I mean?
That's kind of one of the benefits.
I think in our life with our, you know, in our age group, that's kind of what the advantage
can be.
If you're older, there are many different advantages.
You know, as you're aging, like you don't want your body to be processing all night
long.
You want to give it a break.
I had the craziest sex dreams last night.
But anyway, that's a whole different conversation.
What on earth?
I'm so narvelated.
No, because I think it's because I ate anyway.
Oh, because of like eating too close to bedtime?
Yes.
And I like ate something that gave me like, anyway.
it was you had some oysters as you were going to bed it was wild up in my head last night okay um
hormones what what is your thought on like what how hormones impact weight loss and like what we
eat and because here's the thing i'm good i'm good for 14 days and then that 21 day it's not
even the week that i'm on my period it's the week right before right it's where you feel it goes to
i want to eat all the food yes i'm like give me a chris is like are you gonna eat the whole box
some macaroni i'm like yep no here's it's so funny because we still wonder what's going on
every month why am i so hungry why am i no i'm always like why do i feel like a disgusting blob
i'm like oh my period exactly it's like we still wonder like what's going on and it's every month
right like 20 doesn't change yeah it doesn't change 40 50 years however long so okay so yes
i mean it is hard to manage and and curb those cravings and also maybe think about that week
is maybe not a weight loss week just focus on maintaining get to the gym you know calm your
cramps eat something you really enjoy even like one solution could be starting your day off with
something that you really like versus waiting for those cravings to set in so that's just a way to
manage things because psychologically if you eat something you really want in the morning you're
less likely to crave it later in the day oh yeah be kind to yourself you know okay cookie for
breakfast yeah why not i know dairy is it bad what's the real truth again same thing like people's
bodies some people's bodies are more sensitive to it others aren't um what's important is that you
look at your diet how much dairy are you eating right i mean if you're having cheese at every
meal and a latte three times a day that might be a lot of of dairy take it down once a day even
have it in your latte um or in your cup of coffee or whatever in your bowl of cereal but i mean it
could be the amount you're eating that's causing that discomfort too so if you have a true lactose
intolerance of course eliminate it completely if there's a medical reason yes get rid of it but
just to jump on again i'm very you know moderate in my approach i'm not going to tell you to get
off dairy if you really like greek yogurt it's just not going to happen and there's a difference
between i guess eating a greek yogurt and then eating like a pint of ben and jerry's of course
that's right it's about being smart you know yep moderation isn't that weird that it takes
it's taken us this long to like get to that place yeah because we've like i'm so 33 years old and
i'm just figuring it out and you're like oh maybe just like a handful of a cheese it then the whole
box yeah and i won't gain a ton of weight yep yeah honestly like this might sound funny people
laugh like if you want pizza for breakfast you can have pizza for breakfast think about in college
right like you might have had i do too yeah i mean i heat it up in the oven but like you know
it's like just eat it there's it fits one one one you know real food you can eat real food and lose
weight and feel good and and what i always tell my clients is like the guilt you feel physically
is heavier than the weight you might gain you have that feeling of like yeah yeah like you feel like
you've messed up. You're screwed. Yeah. Monday. Yeah. Like I'm done. I'm no, calm down. You know
what I mean? I I've never had a woman come in or call, you know, talk to me on a consultation where
she had a great date and she complained about dessert. She's only complaining about dessert
when she eats it by herself. Oh my God. And then when I got, I was screaming, I'm, I feel so
miserable and I'm disgusted with my, you had a great day. Oh, we had dessert. It's in the food
log. Fantastic. I'm glad you had fun. You know what I mean? Just relieve yourself. I mean, it's,
it's, you know, and Becca brought this up, like people actually eat one, one, one. They have,
it's just natural to them. They make choices, right? Like you were bringing up an example.
Yeah. Like if you wanted to have a cocktail, like you would just skip the pasta. Like it's
a normal approach. I remember when Leah was on the podcast and I have gone back and thought
about this a lot. And she, one of her good friends and she was like, I love to work out
because I love to eat. Right. Like, do you know what I mean? And like, if you want to be one of
those people that's like, I want to eat. Like then you gotta, you gotta like work out, you know what
I mean? Like I have friends that are like, I don't eat at all. Like then you just sit at home with
no energy, but you're so thin, you know what I mean? But like, if you want to be someone that's
like, okay, like I just went to this wellness camp and it's like, they really feed you. Like
you're eating all day long. You've never pooped more in your life because you're like having the
greens and the protein. And like, essentially it's like the one-on-one where, but like at the end of
the meal, there's like berries or there's like a little snap snickerdoodle or whatever. But you're
like i'm hiking in the morning like yay right i mean you have to be active of course exercise is
part of the big picture because as human beings we need to move right but yeah if you're you know
if like the problem with that is if you're trying to lose weight and you go and do a ton of cardio
to burn off the calories that's just not working yeah you've done it for years or every week you
start on that cardio um bandwagon but eating right and exercising like you don't have to
train for a triathlon to lose weight, right? You can go to the gym, do a class, go outside and then
eat right. Slim it down. One, one, one. Ooh, I love that. Um, what's your favorite? We have a
lot of working ladies that are like running out to get lunch or packing their lunch at home. What's
your like go-to lunch? Well, I love sandwiches at lunch cause it really does fill me up. And
yeah, this is the best language. I only eat sandwiches exclusively in life. Yeah. Oh really?
i mean a lot yeah i love sandwiches so like her rap name is little sandy yeah
you guys are so funny um so i love sandwiches at lunch and even a strategy women can start
to implement is like eat the sandwich right away like half of it at lunch yeah and then save the
other half for like an hour later that way you it's called redistribution of calories so you're
still eating the same amount but you're breaking it up so you actually feel like i'm eating again
right so if you have that luxury at your office or your desk or your job break it up but i love
i mean anything from like uh like what's your go-to sandwich yeah i love like a mozzarella
with basil and tomato baguette i love um like i like rubens you know what i mean but just eat
half now half later i'm really like a woman that likes to eat you know i love this falafel pita is
also great for vegetarian options the lady gang now you talked about having your clients log
things. And this is my next question. Do you have to log everything you eat daily to be successful
in a diet? I think it depends on what phase you're in. Initially, you probably want to become more
aware of your patterns and the foods you're eating and really examine and say, okay, why am I craving
this? Or an observation like, God, I crave something sweet every afternoon. Maybe you're
not eating enough carbs during the day and that's just the reality of why you're craving the sugar.
So yeah, I think in the beginning, yes. I think when you're in maintenance, let's say you've
reached your goal weight i would continue keeping a food log for a good six weeks after it keeps you
on your toes and you still are aware of like okay i'm still doing this the other advantage of having
a food log is that's like data right so like let's say you know a couple months later things are
stressful or what have you and you find like the scales going up a little bit go back and look at
your food log and say well what was i doing what was working for me because likely something has
changed and so you have that data yeah fat burger right i know exactly what's changed
a skinny fry on the way home it doesn't count if i'm on my period right no um okay uh i think
we'll finish with this one question which i love um what is the best way to cleanse your body after
indulging too much you know like you go out and you're like you want to reset and you know that
you like you lived you went to vegas right it was the italian feast in new york all right so here's
what you do so you've got this like crazy three days and likely you're carved out i mean that's
we're not binging on protein most of us are not right no so you've carved out a whole weekend of
steak yeah so this is how you reset so the next morning try a carbless breakfast just start there
right? You're going to lighten up the, you're going to lighten the load in the morning. You're
going to have a focus on protein and vegetables with a little fat to hold you over. And that's
a good way just to kind of feel a little lighter and then maybe opt for a carbless lunch or dinner,
depending on your energy and motivation, but stay hydrated, get good sleep, even try to get like
some kind of activity and to reset your body. Cause if you've stayed up all night, you're
probably like exhausted but you have to go to work the hydration is my is my question how important
is this water thing all right so we all say you know drink by the way drink your uh drink your
half of your weight in water is per ounces yeah right yeah ridiculous i mean most people can't
do that right it's just too it depends how much you weigh it's hard though it is hard right i mean
we've all got our water here so stay hydrated so here's the thing if you're hungry after a full
meal you're probably and you're still you're like why am i hungry you're probably dehydrated
if your lips are dry you're probably dehydrated you know if you are um you can feel it right like
you know when you haven't had enough water and also if you're keeping a food journal you can
track that and you'll say got it i've had like two cups of water today so one goal is like have a cup
of water every time you have a meal that's five go to the gym have another bottle you're done like
rest assured that you can be hydrated without drinking tons of water okay i drink some days
no water same same i literally brought my hydro flask to try to drink water because i'm like i'm
so dehydrated but having one around i drink like three times more water than yeah well how come
you guys i don't drink it i don't yeah yeah i don't and also if you don't do it then you don't
do it right yeah drink a coffee then i'll have a tea then i'll have an iced tea in the afternoon
right let's just infuse some water yeah right like a coffee every other beverage a coffee I mean
think about it how it's like you're caffeinating and then dehydrating and then you need to
rehydrate yeah I just keep drinking more coffee just start with a cup of water okay I will um
tell everyone I know that they can get your book on Amazon and then if they want to work with you
or tell us about like that so you have personal clients right yeah I work one-on-one with clients
in my nutrition consulting firm, Essential Nutrition for You. And basically when we work
together, again, we look at your food logs and then we really developed, we developed specific
strategies based on your eating personality, your food preferences. Like, do you like cold food,
hot food? You know, what's your day like? You know, what time do you get home from dinner?
I mean, it's really like, just, it's a, there's a lot of attention on you when you work one-on-one
with a nutritionist. And so I take some of the strategies from the book and we apply it to your
lifestyle um and it's just like a really fun and engaging process like a lot of people don't ever
reach out to a nutritionist and they just keep trying diet after diet but like if you finally
connect with somebody and you like their tone like a lot of women have read the book and then
they reach out to me and they just feel so comfortable talking to me i think i always
like to say like i'm a real woman like i eat you know i'm i'm not you know gonna be like enjoy your
bowl of air you bitch sadness that's why i used to eat when i was on all the diets yeah
no you are you're like the you're the every woman i am i'm a mom i lost 53 pounds after having my
son i mean i you know i've done this like most i mean we've got to do it together yeah i love this
so we're gonna we'll link to your instagram we'll link to your site um but and we'll also link to
the book which is available on amazon and i'm assuming all the other booksellers right yeah
Yeah. So it's available. Okay. And again, it's called the one, one, one diet. And I, this is
your, from us to you ladies, this is your sign. If you were waiting to get your shit together for
the summer, this is it. Welcome to the podcast. This is going to start you on a new thing.
