Terms and conditions apply. time for a quickie podcast one presents the lady gang the hollywood girl posse with lady gang quickie here's kelty knight becca tobin and jack vanik let's make this quick
Starting point is 00:02:26 hello hello hello welcome to lady gang quickie i am becky here with jack and kelty and it wouldn't be a Kelty birthday if it didn't mean taking over your month. Some of us get our favorite singer of all time in one episode. It's Paul Abdul waiting for you. So I just have to give myself two birthday quickies because I have nothing else to live for. Wow. It's true. So if you listened last week to the lady gang quickie you know that it was my 40th birthday and i'm now deep in my 40s and i was making a list of the 40 things that i wish i had known before i turned 40 and we got about halfway through because we really discussed them because they were brilliant insightful amazing and so we're gonna do the second half of the list i hope that you guys loved it i hope this episode didn't
Starting point is 00:03:22 completely bomb so now we're doing another one of like people being like we just won't air it um but but yeah like i i'm feeling gracious that i'm 40 and i wanted to celebrate in a good way and uh okay so here i'm back at it here we go all right guys ready okay so i'm starting off with something very vapid uh unless it comes naturally avoid your red hair phase at all costs oh my god yes amen my red hair phase king men i know a couple non-natural redheads that i couldn't see them as any other thing for them they're those are unicorns though well that's like anna rose she i can't imagine her she's gonna have red hair until the day she dies and she should have been born with fire engine red hair yeah like i have a friend who's strawberry
Starting point is 00:04:08 blonde naturally and has red hair and it looks amazing so yeah but they have the skin tone like if you have strawberry blonde hair you're like kind of gingery already and like anna is very freckly so there's like a ginger within you yeah for me my redheaded phase was bright orange and then like a butternut squash this is not great it might have been the worst period of my life looks wise my red hair phase was also the worst period of my life looks wives i think when you're like why don't you go red it's so sassy god it never is like a deep void in you if you're going Do not take a picture of Emma Stone to anyone and ask them for that color. It won't happen.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. All right, next. When someone breaks your heart, the best revenge is to just disappear. Yeah. Man. I really, really wish I had learned this earlier. So you mean like not stalking our mutual ex-boyfriend after we broke up? I didn't stalk him.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I tried to take him the fuck down. oh for revenge it was different um but like the most hurtful thing ever is my first husband just like peaced out of the world and has never contacted me ever again ever yep ouch you know even like a little blockage on the iphone all of it just gone bye phone number nothing is sweeter than when they try to contact you and that text turns green it's like oh and then you don't have to deal with like getting a text from your ex you just on christmas merry christmas hope you're well yeah it's christmas don't text me go yourself um all right next lesson no one's actually thinking that hard about you yeah so true everybody's head is so far up their own ass that nobody is noticing
Starting point is 00:06:03 anything else but themselves 100 true so don't even worry about it yeah unless they're hate watching your instagram yes which i do i did do a quick hate watch this week so i understand but um but then that's just like that's like a it's like a it was back right like bitch eating crackers it's like you get to a point where like well if you either don't care about anybody at all wait what's back it's when okay it's called bitch eating crackers and it means that like somebody annoys the shit out of you so much that even them eating crackers like is so annoying like everything that they do is annoying and you know you have those people that you hate you hate watch them so it's either you don't care at all or it's like well you care so much and you hate it
Starting point is 00:06:53 at the same time there's one that i follow that it's not that i hate this person so much i'm just so enamored with the idea of how they operate on social media because it is so far from the way that I could ever yeah but this person's going through a big public breakup and and it's like I can watch everything they put every every direct thing they put up towards that alludes to this thing or even every other sub like a subtweet but what is it like a passive aggressive repost of something i'm like i know what this person's last five days have been i could give you a like if i were in the fbi i could map out their whole king life right now based on what they're posting can you text us who yes i want to i feel like this could be a hobby for me it's a
Starting point is 00:07:49 great i love it there's nothing better than somebody like a really public person going through a breakup on instagram it's like they can't help themselves they can't help themselves but you guys do you think this happens to everyone like do you think if zach left me for like you know some soccer mom in my neighborhood i would be doing these weird things on instagram you wouldn't jack and i would i absolutely would not absolutely would not i did in my last relationship yeah what are you talking about our proof our proof is in the pudding baby yeah but that i was a different i was very broken and very sad leave you yeah i wouldn't do it now because i know that we just talked about this the best revenge is just to disappear but based on our
Starting point is 00:08:34 past actions we are a passive i didn't no no no i was not i was very it was very passive i never did anything outright but there were some passive aggressive things going on but like like every insta story about like how to spot a narcissist every single person that posts that right now i'm like jesus christ we get it your ex was a narcissist or that's what you're diagnosing him with oh like feels so good though i'm sure it feels good it's just everyone watching we're like oh it's such a journey it's a journey you'll get okay baby you'll be okay um okay next please and Thank you always. Next, you're going to work really hard to get all the things that you're supposed to have.
Starting point is 00:09:19 And then you're going to want to throw it all away so you can act like you're 21 again. Yeah. Totes. I haven't gotten all the things that I want yet. I need a house. And then maybe. And then because like I'm at the point where Chris and I, when we are on our trip, we're like, should we sell everything and go live in a van? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:09:39 We're like, we could work remotely. Don't do that. and we could just van around well i want to do that i think a way to do that just test it out is just test it out you know spend a month in a van with chris your nine foot tall husband who never gets off the phone enjoy it's true we're gonna have to make some really other big life changes um okay uh it's okay to let go of friendships that no longer serve you man i really felt like i needed to stay friends with everyone from high school and when i planned my 20-year high school reunion and only nine people showed up i realized i was trying too hard to be
Starting point is 00:10:13 friends with these people obviously i don't matter to you the way that you matter to me name her love it named her you know i just the thought of kelty who didn't have time to do anything this was a period of your life where you were waking up at 5 a.m wasn't it i mean i wasn't at five i was like 6 30 yeah okay but you were really hustling like it was during lady gang tv yes peak kelty still had the energy to plan a high school reunion just to show people how amazing she turned out there was nothing more kelty than that like that's it that's it wrapped up in a bow done this is so jenny mullen of you it really is and and you know what and i'm done because after that after that well you can't do that again no i'm not doing 25 and i'm not doing 30
Starting point is 00:11:09 because that was the greatest that was the end because now my neck is crepey and i will never see any of those people again their necks yeah that's fine same age you're the only one that's gotten a neck lift so far exactly um okay anyway oh god i'm loving this so when you were young when we were young we used to moan and groan when our parents wanted to listen to the oldies station on the radio and now i want you to know that everything you love will eventually become an oldie too i know it already is all the time it already is they jared saw on ebay last night that they he was looking for like van halen teas or something like that and in the vintage section there was a shirt uh third eye blind no well third eye blind is vintage because that's from the 90s
Starting point is 00:12:07 there was like a shirt of a band from like the warp tour days and they're like vintage say anything shirt he's like this is officially vintage and it's on sale for 150 bucks like we are now we're so old that our shit that we actually enjoyed in our prime is considered vintage wow help yeah i have to go when i'm on spotify and i'm trying to find something to listen to today's top hits is not it for me i'm afraid i didn't know a single artist at the miley cyrus new year's eve show who played i don't know i still don't know that's crazy because it's on tv usually someone named sweetie sweetie saw weedy i mean she's got a mcdonald's meal i don't know either but like i only know the mcdonald's you
Starting point is 00:12:55 I don't know who anyone is. We're so old. Saweetie? What is it? Saweetie? Saweetie. How do you say it? It's Saweetie, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:13:07 It's S-A-W-E-E-T-Y is how you spell it. Saweetie. Saweetie. Saweetie. Whatever. Okay, next. Invest in one good handbag, one power pair of shoes, one pair of jeans that make you confident, high quality jewelry, and get everything else as cheaply as you can. Sure.
Starting point is 00:13:25 That's good. Good lesson. You're going to lose every pair of designer sunglasses you ever buy. So just get the knockoffs. Amen. I have successfully kept my two pair of Louis Vuitton sunglasses for three years. Shocking. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Especially the amount of time you day drink. Every time I've lost a pair of sunglasses, it's been because it's been the day time and I'm drinking. I know. I don't know. I really, whereas I don't. Good for you. You would. Knock it on wood.
Starting point is 00:13:52 resilience is the most important skill that you can learn i don't think that's a skill you learn is it i think you learn to be resilient i think i think it just humans are resilient oh well oh keep being resilient because it's important i think that there is no option for you to go through life without getting the wind knock the out of you in some major way once or twice a year and you just have to be able to be like okay we can do hard things we can get through this we can get back on track whatever it is that you're going through got to be resilient okay here's one that's really happy learn to get good with learn to get good i don't think this is english but here's what i wrote learn to get good with loss you're going to lose jobs you're going to
Starting point is 00:14:42 lose animals you're going to lose people and you're going to lose hope learning to soothe yourself and dig your way out of your own grief is important or else you'll spend all of your adulthood being sad about some losing something back to that resilience yeah let go of the things you should do and do the things you want to do this is inspired by my mom sheila sheila is the queen of things that you should do i should go to this person's house even though i hate them because that's what you should do i should should should should i really should call this person no do what you want to do and stop doing the shoulds like you should build the birthday cake from scratch for your kid or else you don't love them no go to carvel get an ice cream cake call
Starting point is 00:15:31 it a day it's the power of no there are things you should do though you should rsvp to everything you're invited to even if it's a no but you can you can rsvp no you don't have to rsvp yes yeah i'm saying even if it's a no you have to rsvp to everything because that's 41 things i wish i had learned before and you should go to that funeral even though funerals make you feel weird yeah um they make you sad uh you should there are things you should do some people should remember to pick your kid up from school yeah the only reason i'm saying because don't give the people out there free reign to do whatever they want because there are selfish assholes out there who are going to hear this and be like you're right i shouldn't i'm going to just do me and you're a dick yeah
Starting point is 00:16:25 all right moving on um sometimes you have to say sorry for something that you truly are not sorry about and you gotta just say sorry anyway can we have an example of something you had to say sorry i know exactly what what's the example i have so many give one give one no well i can't say it on the air okay on the air like we're on fucking ryan c chris in the morning on air will i baby no it's a it's a lot of things sometimes you know in your fucking hearts of hearts that you are right about something and you are spiteful and you are feeling like you know what strike this person down with a fucking laser beam because they suck but you have to just be the
Starting point is 00:17:17 person that is just like learn to do an apology do a good apology whether you mean it or you want them to rot in hell just say you're sorry and move the fuck on the withholding the sorry is no bueno okay pick the nice guy yeah yeah the most valuable thing on the planet is time spend wisely oh did you that's like an oracle spend wisely my dad has a fucking insane retirement shirt you guys that he wears around my house when he's at my house it says i'm i'm a senior citizen the only thing i can't buy is time how depressing is that super dark but it makes people really hurry that are in front of you in the supermarket i guess this guy's going out soon all right when we kept back my my last
Starting point is 00:18:12 seven things i wish i learned before i turned 40 and then we're gonna circle back and talk about what a retirement shirt is today's episode of lady gang is brought to you by Coors Light so January is finally coming to an end it seemed like the longest month in the world and whenever I want to just take a moment and chill because there's so much work going on I grab a Coors Light and there's only one beer out there that's literally made to chill and that is Coors Light the mountains on the bottles and cans even turn blue when your beer is cold which is my favorite thing in the world so that way you know when it's time to chill because there's nothing worse than a warm beer. Starting point is 00:21:32 All right, we're back. What's a retirement shirt, you ask? I was thinking the same thing. I'm like, this is bizarre. A retirement shirt. A shirt you wear after retirement? Yeah. Couldn't you have just worn that on weekends?
Starting point is 00:21:48 The retirement shirt store? What would your retirement shirt say? Another year closer to death. It's like what I want on every, uh, what's it called? Birthday cake. Like a retirement shirt there. This is a thing that exists. I want everyone to know and back me up on this.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Like men, especially when they retire, people start buying them like ridiculous, like joke shirts about their age, old fart. you might remember such classics as the old fart shirt or the over the hill or gone fishing you know gone fishing is not a retirement say like i've had 99 surgeries but my neck still won but my neck still needs done wow you need to that needs to be written down in our book somewhere put that in the doc there's nothing you can do about your neck anyway okay should that be the name of that last episode or this episode probably there's nothing you can do about your neck no i've got 99 surgeries but my neck's still one wait is that what i said i don't know yeah but
Starting point is 00:23:00 it doesn't really make sense i gotta be my neck's still one w-o-n like oh my neck's still one yeah yeah got it get it okay next learn what are you doing with your bang well guys you know my the birthday came and she was emotional she almost cut bangs herself oh no yeah yeah i even have the picture i let me see if i deleted the text but i sent a picture i was having a conversation with clay oh i deleted it i was having a conversation with clay um i don't remember what we're talking about and i was like hey can i get these bangs and i said should i cut my hair or should i keep growing it he said babe keep growing it it looks so good and then i said can i get these bangs and then he didn't even reply he was like no but here let me show you this is you still attempted it
Starting point is 00:23:51 don't you think i should get that you want a curtain bang i don't think your hair is thick enough for that no offense but that girl has like but like that girl has like the thickest hair i've ever seen yeah a curtain bang is very tough okay i know we've talked about this before i know i know okay buy you know what you should do is buy some clip-on amazon curtain bangs like i did yeah and try them out and realize that you it was the best seven dollars you ever spent i bought a ton of curtain bangs and they oh no i bought short bangs okay i'll go buy a curtain bang i i have some i'll send you the link it was the best money i ever spent a curtain bang it's horrific it's truly terrible i'll go get it should i go get it yeah please one second happy birthday
Starting point is 00:24:37 me here we go becca is the cameras on well first of all you got the wrong color that's not no that's not a curtain bang that's not a curtain it's too short too short oh oh no it's not great could i be any uglier i think let me take my headphones off okay okay well first of all it's the wrong color for your can you put your hair down though too yes because by itself it's disastrous but i actually think it could be why are they strawberry blonde i don't know because amazon isn't exactly where you should buy fake hair hello world i mean i don't hate it are you kidding me it's not for you it's not for you you've had bangs yeah i have i have but i was younger it's more youth i was more youthful i think if they weren't orange it could see that looks pretty right there oh yeah
Starting point is 00:25:33 that does look good they look very penny lane you're out of your mind no it's beautiful let's have a vote please instagram should becca get these this looks beautiful it is cute it's really cute and now i want to do it okay i'm ordering my bangs no i need to try that this is not what i i literally put these on when i was facetiming with my sister and my sister goes you should never cut bangs it actually looks pretty but but you are beautiful yeah i will okay they don't have the right color though this was the only like even close to blonde color they had you have to make your own you know what i mean like take whatever clip that is and then take your own extensions and make it oh that sounds like a weekend project bitches sounds like it's not gonna work okay keep
Starting point is 00:26:18 going all right next learn to confidently explain your strengths to others in a workplace setting without apologizing like sorry i'm so amazing at this thing like super awesome at photoshop no people are like okay well both of you bitches that have never really worked in a corporate office before it's like sometimes you want to go and be like hey um you know i just had an idea but like you don't have to like like it or use it but i was just thinking about this thing and i was thinking like it could be cool but like whatever you know just go in and be like hey guys i have a great idea and this is what i think we should do yeah confident and also be confident and be able to speak about your skill set and what you bring to the table without being like i don't like
Starting point is 00:27:06 there's a mix between like your folk healthy and you're like a pathetic person who has no self-confidence and like in the middle of there is where you should exist so between me and you somewhere between a becca i did a movie but i don't want to tell anyone and kelty i did a movie and i bought myself a billboard she got offered 30 000 dollars we can talk about that in a different podcast big deal okay next try not to say anything behind someone's back that you couldn't say to their face i don't know sometimes i like to just get things off my chest i love to talk some shit okay make better mistakes tomorrow my like i mean it's so good i think it you know you can even buy a coffee cup that says that yeah it's a classic
Starting point is 00:27:53 it's a classic printed it out off the internet had it at my desk because i always your retirement shirt motto retirement shirt make better steps mistakes to mopes you're dead okay um it's okay it's okay if people don't like you it's okay if people don't like you yeah totally just like maybe but like see how many people don't like you like if it's everybody that doesn't like you maybe it's you like common denominator i actually heard laurie gottlieb the woman who wrote that what was the name of her book kelty i mean i can see it i can't remember at this maybe you should talk to someone yeah yeah she's a therapist and she was saying with her patients that or clients whatever that she has people like really take a good look at their the patterns the
Starting point is 00:28:42 things that they're always coming in and complaining about uh-huh and if it's more than a like if it's you like about other people happen with every person that's your friend oh yeah it's like take a look inward and find out if that's maybe you uh-huh there are so many people in my life who have that it's probably me too I mean I'm probably also in the same category but I have friends that are constantly complaining about the same thing but with different people and it's so clear to me yeah that it's them and like their expectations are or it might be something that they're doing or something they're causing something to happen it's the same thing in relationships it's like if you keep dating people and the same thing keeps happening to you like
Starting point is 00:29:27 it's it is like a common denominator thing it's like you're in a shit sandwich and you're the meat yeah yes exactly yeah um okay i have just two more on my 40 for 40 list so get ready for this brilliance you can't change the outcome of things by just trying harder true always always maybe if you're like i'm gonna put some work into my marriage or my sex life or my job or whatever but in general like just because you really want that relationship to work out you can't just love harder if someone doesn't love you yeah the way that they need to like you extra loving is not gonna is not gonna work and you know like Becca could make herself nutso bananas but if she loved like if she just took every audition and she went on every like thing that she was asked to do and
Starting point is 00:30:23 went and did like the free youtube commercial about the craft just because she needed to be like in front of a camera like it's not going to change the outcome of her career like you have to be patient you have to wait and sometimes just what's meant for you is meant for you yeah you know when to you have to know when to quit and when things are like out of your control like you can't control things that you can't control i know that was deep wow is that your retirement shirt? You can't control things that you can't control. I mean, it is true. Amen. Okay. So the last one is something that I learned in therapy this year, and it has been revolutionary into my life and my family's life. And so I'm sharing it with you. It is that we all have a window of
Starting point is 00:31:08 tolerance. So I know I said tolerance before, but the window of tolerance is this idea that we all have a breaking point in our lives and that can be with anything with health with relationships with people with sleep with how far you can push with how much you can take and we have to respect our own window of tolerance and we also have to respect other people's windows of tolerance so like for me this is the best lady gang example i can give you is that alex and i we are people who like we just want to work until it's done because getting something off our list is like the most important thing so i could text you from eight in the morning till 10 o'clock at night every day and just like keep you guys on a constant text chain because my window of tolerance for that
Starting point is 00:31:58 kind of thing is like i don't have one like it never bought it never like irks me right but i've learned that you guys do have a window of tolerance like you have to stop doing the work at some point and go live your life to be okay the next day wow becca this is beautiful my window of tolerance for becca's mustache is very high bring that to me every day the most you can beautiful oh and a chin you look kind of sexual the goatee oh it was like when kelsey had a mustache so good anyway window of tolerance do you get it yeah yeah that totally makes sense completely yeah it's like your thresholds are just you've different than everyone my therapist yesterday said something that blew my mind what get comfortable with the uncomfortable
Starting point is 00:32:42 so if you feel like your life is a little bit out of control there's things that are out of your control there's unknowns there's and that's like i don't know the whole state of the world right now there's a lot of unknowns and it's scary and there are some people who do not do well with that myself being one of them and i want everything to be tied up in a pretty bow and taken care of and know that it's good and know that this is in place and know that this thing is happening and this is confirmed and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And it's like, well, there's, that's not an option right now. So you can either live in that discomfort or just accept that it is what it is and be comfortable with the uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:33:23 I like that. It's been helping me a lot lately. Yeah. It's kind of like a stupid idea. Cause like you don't have a choice yeah but when you think about it you're like oh you know i think when you're an adult you do start to spend a lot of your time saying okay well once my kitchen renovation is done and i can start cooking again i'll feel better once i lose this 10 pounds i'm gonna feel better once i um once the spring comes and it's not so cold out i'm gonna feel better Well, it's looking to like external things to like make you happy and make you feel normal. It's like the human condition too is to like feel like something external is going to make you feel happy or make you content. Like we're always chasing for that thing and that thing.
Starting point is 00:34:13 And maybe that's like part of us being ambitious and like keeping ourselves alive. We're wired that way. but now we can all kind of relax hopefully and not be such psychopaths you know you can't control things you can't control it's so dark well happy birthday to me for a second week in a row um paula it's uh it's year six of my birthday here on lady gang um if you are listening if you're listening to this right now and you have a form of social media called instagram i dare you to leave a comment on paul abdul's page and say when are you going on lady gang why won't you go on lady gang for kelty she's your biggest fan and we'll see what happens
