Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which means it's going to be awesome. It's time for a quickie. Podcast One presents the Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie. Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Let's make this quick. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie. we are right now in the closet of my room which i've recently tidied up oh you did it oh look at
Starting point is 00:00:34 all my this is my sexual drawer actually your sexual drawers yeah these are like all my looks by the way kelty gifted me a sex which i assume that was just a free gift that somebody had sent us people sent them to us for you for me just for me well no and becca and me oh okay yeah but i was like we get sent honestly i don't know what it is about our brand but we get sent sex toys like it is raining down dildos right here it's a rain in dildos hallelujah i i appreciate a sex toy it's something that i will actually use so thank you but it's fun it was funny because she gave me the this wrapped gift and she's like jack i got you a gift i'm like what is it a dildo i was there you shook it and he said what is it like a dildo it was it was a dildo you're welcome we're very
Starting point is 00:01:18 on brand it's perfect um we have afton here again part two what do we have what are we doing with afton afton well so afton is your glam squad and she's glammed me as well she's very talented i want to know a little about your career and then because we had clayton on and he went deep into hair right i think we should like go deep into makeup okay i also have to say the i think it might have been one of the first times that afton ever did your makeup it was the youngest you have ever looked like it looks so good and it was pre-chin surgery pre-chin i know and everyone's like oh my god you've been looking so good and then people are like it's probably your chin i'm like you i looked good before you did look we did say that today but your chin helped you a lot you
Starting point is 00:01:58 well i love you're one of the most beautiful i love doing kelty's makeup because she has the skin of an angel and i like always i'm like i haven't seen skin like that ever you know why and i work with you know 14 year old models so how did you get into doing what you're doing so I'll do the spark notes version but I always wanted to do broadcast actually like I said last time I went to school for radio finished got my degree and was like I don't want to do this anymore
Starting point is 00:02:22 it's terrible as we all do I'm like I don't want to move to Oklahoma and started a radio station in the middle of nowhere and so I was in that post graduation slump and it was like two months after I graduated my mom was like I know you really want to do makeup if you're serious about it
Starting point is 00:02:38 and you're going to take it seriously we'll be supportive okay so the next week i was enrolled back in makeup school i got my first job two weeks in and i've been working ever since and what was rad was i had gone to school out of film school so a lot of my friends that i made at chapman ended up opening production companies or going into commercial and so i just you know i was networking without knowing i was networking so i had like a nice in one that's good because doing makeup and hair especially in the beginning is a grind it was awful i mean i started nine years ago and i worked like what are those first jobs oh my gosh well did you ever work for free like for free jack i i worked for free for three years
Starting point is 00:03:16 like i and you have to when you're that young i remember so i remember coming home from i did a black keys music video and i remember coming home and telling one of my friends somewhere i was like i did the black keys and she's like that is so cool oh my god you must have gotten paid so much how much you get paid and i said don't ask me how much i got paid for the rest of my life because when i do get paid you'll know right i'll be so excited about it that you'll know so it's like yeah you i mean you worked for nothing it was before instagram so like you couldn't go on and show that you were good and then have people want to come work with you it was like word of mouth you had to really go out and hustle and it was awful yeah working in a restaurant and then doing
Starting point is 00:03:51 that and then i got fired from the restaurant and it was like that was the moment where i'm like i'm not gonna look for another side gig i'm gonna make this one work yeah because i feel like once you rely on that not to say that you can't do both but i feel like there has to be something within you where it's like i'm not gonna try as hard if i have right there there has to be that fear of like well if i don't do this i'm not gonna make my rent or i'm like you know but it's a really hard thing and i i deal with it now being like on the other side of it too because when i first with dancing and also my broadcast career like when you're first starting out there's no way to get your foot in the door except work for free but you actually on the flip side now that i've been
Starting point is 00:04:29 on the flip side of both of those things because i did like a Kanye video when he had a huge budget for like a hundred dollars. Like, you know, and then now when I'm like, I need this salary to do the work that I do. Cause what I like, I'm a talented person. There is another girl below me that will work for free or like a horrible salary. And so what happens is you bring everyone down, but it's up because the only way to get into the business is by doing that. No one wants to work for free or work for shit money, but it's like, there's no other way. Sometimes the competition is just so hard. So it's so hard. And it's just like in that industry in both of ours and in yours, like, like you said, there's always someone
Starting point is 00:05:06 that's going to do it for less. And especially with Instagram, it's like, you can just DM someone and be like, let me come do your makeup for free. And then there are people that, that come, you know, have a little money to begin with, but they want to make it in the industry. So they're like, okay, well we don't have a budget to fly you to Florida. And they're like, no, no, no, I'll come to you. I'll, I'll fly to Florida. I'll bring my kid. I'll do your makeup for free. And then their career skyrocketed with Instagram. Well, in this day and age, so many people aren't going to school for these things anymore too. So it's hot. You can self teach yourself and which is fine. If you have the talent, you have
Starting point is 00:05:36 it. Like you, you know, I've, I've had, I've had producers before one in particular who like saw me, you know, you work your butt off as a glam, like in the morning and then you kind of sit around all day. That's just like how it goes. And I remember this producer like in the car and she was like, Oh my gosh, I wish I would have been a makeup artist because your job is so much easier. And I was like, yeah, just, you know, have a natural born talent and then go to school to refine your skill and then work for 10 years. And, you know, I'm like, like how, you know, like ignorant of you to think that like, I just got lucky, but that's the thing with luck and like the whole, I'm, I'm so sick of people being like, Oh my God,
Starting point is 00:06:12 your job is so amazing. Or you're so lucky. Like, yes. Am I luckier for sure? Like I've born into privilege. Like my parents would get like, I, I know that I am a privileged person, but every job is hard and every life is hard it's unright for sure you know what i mean it's like you can't compare apples to oranges like you really can't i'm like in rwanda i'm like yeah of course my life like i feel like a fucking dick being like oh my day was so hard i worked so hard like yeah i'm not picking a potato in and that's my only source of income for the month like i get that there's like a level of privilege but at the same time like there are really glamorous things about my job and then there's things where i just like want to scream and cry and be like i wish
Starting point is 00:06:52 people understood that like this is how hard i'm working same thing with you it's like i watch you at five o'clock in the morning when i get up to do this show you've already been on the road and like come ready you've been up an extra hour and then you're lugging ready as an overstatement but you know it's like there's hard things about every job and it's like we all need to be like a little more chill with each other i agree it's so easy for you jackets i mean i do make fun and we all do and we all do do that thing now especially like when we have been working for as long as we have you're like well back in my day it wasn't just you couldn't just get on yeah you know and i get it like it's still hard for those people and everyone is still starting from scratch it's just but then
Starting point is 00:07:26 it's it goes back to like don't compare your hustle their highlight reel where it's like you look at somebody else and everything looks easy from the outside but nobody is seeing like all of the bullshit grunt work that everybody is doing to make their life work oh i have a good job i did in the beginning story so it was um i was doing makeup i was assisting for a party city commercial hot and um I auditioned for a party city commercial but if you've seen the party city commercials you know it's them them holding streamers and like yeah their eyes are wide and they're smiling and it's just like over the top yeah so I'm on this job and one of the producers comes up to me and they're like our blonde model didn't show up and I had like a
Starting point is 00:08:06 blonde pixie cut and so did this model will you be in the commercial and I was like absolutely not I can't think of anything worse in the world and she's like oh well but we'll pay you like we'll pay you the actress's rate on top of your rate and I was like okay so I could just bring my set bag in hide it touch people up like in between and be in this commercial and she's like we're just gonna like have you kind of like be with the kit like you're kind of off screen I'm like great so it turns out I have to like bring out a fruitcake and get everyone excited I'm like about this fruitcake and you can't talk and you're like dancing to music that doesn't exist and it's everything and the commercial comes out and I am like it's like I was the lead
Starting point is 00:08:41 on the thing and then it was friends that i had from college that live in nebraska now texting me being like are you in a party city commercial and um it ended up getting renewed for the next three years after that and every year they sent me a check oh residuals i got residuals did you make like okay money from i mean i got 500 bucks each time so it was like at the time i think my rate on i think my rate on the job was i mean Obviously, it was probably like $200, $250 or something. That's amazing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Yeah, it was great. It was the day, the like one year finally that they didn't renew it. I was kind of upset. I was upset. It was a double-edged sword because people still recognize me of my friends and like would send it to me and be like, this is embarrassing. Dude, it was your claim to fame, Party City commercial. Claim to fame.
Starting point is 00:09:25 One week, Afton's going to fix your fucking face. The Lady Gang. All right, we're back. Okay, so we were talking about my beautiful skin. Yes, your skin is beautiful. um what's your favorite way to prep um my skin prep actually is generally the same for most of my clients because i really believe in my skin prep and it's cleansing with a micellar water and then um what's a micellar water i know i'm confused by this okay so well i think it's like
Starting point is 00:09:52 a toner water it's not a toner it's just a it's like using a makeup wipe but it doesn't leave any residue so it's just going to take out any extra dirt and oil that you have on your face and create a clean canvas for you to start off with micellar water so it's like it's also really great for if you're like going to bed drunk and you want to do something more than a makeup wipe, but not wash your face, which Jack knows is my struggle. I'm like, you know, such a hypocrite. Cause I'm like, wash your face, do this. And then I'm like, I'm going to eat popcorn.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Um, okay. So cleanse with micellar water. And then I use a plumping and firming moisturizer. I usually use the youth to the people hyaluronic air whip moisture creamer. It's amazing. And then I do an under eye de-puffing balm. Um, and then I kind of let that all sit and then later in the skincare routine, I'll come back and I'll do like a firming under eye cream that you absolutely need to use underneath
Starting point is 00:10:45 concealer or it's just going to be a wreck. And, um, like a really good lip balm. I love the hourglass lip oil for like for peps. So good. It's really luxurious. Um, but yeah, so it's just like cleansing, moisturizing. And then if you're going to use any, like if you want to change the finish of your makeup, So you're using like a dewy primer or, you know, like a matte primer or something like
Starting point is 00:11:06 that. Then you would add that in the middle. I love that. Jack, what's your favorite makeup now that you're like really glam? Do you remember when we started doing Lady Gang TV? I, okay. So I don't know how to put on makeup. I don't wear makeup in normal life at all.
Starting point is 00:11:21 So when we started filming Lady Gang TV, I was scared of wearing a face of makeup. I know. So in our pilot for our show, you and Becca were glammed out. you i don't think we're doing my makeup without no i can't remember no you wouldn't let anyone i don't think you had makeup no like every now and then she'd get a strip lash and be like i hate getting makeup i'm like because you're getting a strip well we had so i don't remember who did my makeup but i you wouldn't but you're very controlling yeah you're like no blush no because i feel like she still is controlling but i've learned how to like guide her into the right
Starting point is 00:11:49 amount of control but yeah didn't the network say that you looked frumpy next to everyone and you needed to like wear more makeup did they not then it was they didn't say no they said next to the girls i definitely did not look on i looked undone yeah you because that wasn't the word cut that out that's not what i meant we won't cut it out we won't cut it out no it's not that it's that when you are like there's a level of makeup that you have to wear on television to look like you're wearing makeup right like we look crazy right now it look it look insane i mean it's good but it's not how you would look in normal life right going out to dinner but you were really uncomfortable with that and then i was like we need to do like we need to get you
Starting point is 00:12:29 you know and i actually was like oh it's like afton just like really like a natural makeup person and then then i realized oh no she's an actual makeup she's not letting no i knew you were a makeup artist but i was like maybe that's her steeze you know what i mean because some people do the kardashian face some people do like when i go over to london when i did the royal wedding to hera my makeup artist over there like the london look is just like they don't even put a lash on you they're like oh that's crazy because i thought they were super heavy-handed i think i feel like i've had a lot of uk is it is either well it's like two ends of the spectrum because they have the crazy makeup where it's like your strip wash is listen natural makeup is and like
Starting point is 00:13:07 she wasn't letting you put any makeup on her no but after what i didn't really do my makeup until we started doing lady gang right because we did like no i mean i did her makeup for all other things before this but my thing was always and i always told her she would have me do her makeup for shoots or for like events or anything that we're going to and she'd always say what do i owe you and i'm like you're not gonna pay me until someone else is paying me yeah and i always said that and then it was like so then when she got the show she's like now's the time bitches like our dreams come true it's been four years i'm like now someone else is paying me i love that it really was the coolest thing ever because it's a dream to work with your best friend like that's
Starting point is 00:13:39 so cool and to be able to like offer you a job like it's just really cool and the fact that you're actually really kick-ass at makeup because it would suck if your bestie was a makeup artist let me do your makeup and i'm just like oh i'm gonna look like shit so but i'm just trying to be a good friend i know it's crazy okay one of the things that i love that you do um you do like a non-contour contour so like when you're standing next to a kardashian like you can see the etching right and i think with you when you've done my makeup it's like i look in the mirror and i'm like oh i have no makeup on but my face looks different i have a whole face of makeup on but like your face just like shapes so and i think that's a little bit more something that our girls
Starting point is 00:14:23 could use in their real lives rather than like the stage makeup of like drag queen so and the i will have to make a note so the other day on instagram i saw this girl i don't even know who i think it was a celebrity but she had the nose contour and i was like afton why don't we ever do nose contour she's like because it only looks good in a photo yeah she had sent me this photo and she was talking about the girl's nose and i was like well that's a lot of contour and she's like well why don't we do it i'm like because it looks awful like it has to be a dead-on photo um i had something to say here face contour face contour oh so the very first so i used to write for birdie the online beauty editorial and the very first article i ever wrote was about this
Starting point is 00:15:00 contour craze and it was years ago and how damaging i'm gonna preface this with to each their own whatever makes you happy by all means 100 do it if that's how you feel you're greatest then absolutely go for it. What I was commenting to you more was this one note of beauty. That's like, so blanket across, across the industry and what we see on Instagram and what we see like, you know, on TV and all these girls thinking that that's how they have to look or like how much they need to wear to change their face, to look like this one person that everyone started looking like. And it's bizarre. And to me, I was saying that expectation is damaging to young girls because they're not even embracing what they look like to begin with, which is usually
Starting point is 00:15:39 beautiful and like there's ways to enhance that and that's my favorite part about makeup like i've never been into doing like character or like i'll do like a super heavy glam because i'm getting paid to do it but like my favorite thing to do is just make people look like the best version of themselves without changing too much about them it's very much what you do but that's the thing it's like i think that um like i there'll be times where i'm like oh i better contour my forehead because so to make it look smaller like do i need a smaller forehead but it's like why why you're like wait but why like why am i and like when did like it become like you want a little pin nose like right i find noses to be so beautiful on a girl me too i think it's like the
Starting point is 00:16:19 character of your face jack that's the compliment jack always gives me she says my nose is her favorite i think you have a really good nose but your nose is not pencil thin and you had a weird pencil thin nose you would look crazy no and that's and that's what i hate about light like our world that we live in because you look on instagram and you see these pictures and you're like oh well that's that's a beautiful nose because it's a small little slopey nose and that's kind of what we're like ingraining in people's heads that that's how your nose should look like where it's not so i will i will do a nose contour when i'm asked to do a nose contour yeah but that's not a go-to thing that i would i'm not going to change a person's face unless
Starting point is 00:16:57 they ask me to like and i've had that i've had people that are like i don't want to see a single freckle on my face when they have beautiful freckles they're like i want my skin to not be my skin it's my favorite ariana grande thing i've ever seen she does she did but it was like before she was huge she did this youtube tutorial of doing her makeup she's like people always ask me how i do my makeup and she's going through and she goes so the key here is to make yourself look nothing like yourself and then she continues and i'm like wow and now fast forward and there's ariana grande who looks nothing like herself she really like a you know that was what she wanted yeah I know I mean I would like a new face but I actually just got a new face
Starting point is 00:17:33 you did but see I like your nose too like really but you both have like interesting noses I have a really interesting nose and I never realized that there was an issue with my nose until I went to get my chin done oh oh what did he say this story no it wasn't in a bad way but like when you go in for a surgery like I did like they take a lot of photos and then they map your face out and of course like their job is all about symmetry right so they're like they're like oh this is what i would do this is off this is off and like they said something to me i can't remember dr diamond or the other like nurses or whatever but they were like oh and what we can do is we can put some filler in your chin so that your chin um matches up with the line of your nose
Starting point is 00:18:15 because right now it doesn't and it's making your nose really protrude and look huge and i was like i've never once thought about my face and then like my nose isn't cute like i know it's a weird little pointy up shape and when i was a kid people used to bug me and be like why does it point up like that did you sit like a piggy oh yeah people want their noses to point up but like i i never realized it was a problem and so then i was like wait is there something wrong with my nose do i need a nose job oh yeah then i started going down the hole and i was like stop oh i did that too when i was this was a couple years ago i was going to get botox and i was asking the injector that was doing my botox i was like oh it was right when like the liquid rhinoplasty like where you
Starting point is 00:18:51 could do like fill in your nose and i was like oh well you know what's that about i was just asking him about it because i hadn't heard of it before he's like oh well on your nose i would actually do like a rhinoplasty and like we do this and this and this because it's too bulbous at the end i'm like god damn it i've never thought about my nose either but here i am now going down a rabbit hole thinking i need a nose job it's so weird so i just was looking i was going to show you this um about like three years ago i was on a show in austin we were staying in these hotel rooms that had like built-in ring lights into the mirrors and i was like i'm gonna do an instagram face on my face because both of you guys know me yeah let me see no little to nothing oh on the weekends i'm like
Starting point is 00:19:26 this is me but otherwise nothing and i did it and it was first of all i looked nothing like myself and then i was like what is this wait we have to post this oh yeah um and i i when we were going out that night with the crew and i took my makeup off like 30 seconds after i finished and took the photo and just like did my regular nothing face but but what was so funny was my caption was um i have a beauty light in my hotel bathroom so i decided to do an experiment i tried every single instagram makeup trend i could think of including but not limited to highlighting contour baking the brow fade the kylie jenner lips that pointy inner corner of the eye thing winged liner and dramatic lashes this took me an hour and 15 minutes um props to people with the passion and
Starting point is 00:20:09 patience to do this every day i prefer myself the way i am with no frills or major modifications and 10 minutes of application i got at the time the most likes on any of course and the comments the comments no literally damn girl fire like um i need this every day amen to that holy crap all this stuff and then people being being like oh shit i just read the comment you look great the other way too oh you're pretty as you are as well yeah i was like i was trying to make a point and it backfired 100 well that's how fucking instagram is it's the world we live in it's messed up it's messed up man um well i think you're really talented uh if you could put last question if you could put three products in every girl's makeup bag that you think are just like
Starting point is 00:20:56 life changers well they would be for they're what i use i think and it's um i wouldn't expect you to use like the shit that you didn't think worked well i guess yeah true like there's this thing that i've i heard this is great it's really expensive doesn't work at all but you should put it looks cute on the gram um it cosmetics cc cream love it that's the only thing i use on my face and yeah and it's really great because it's buildable so you can make it as much coverage as you want um the l'oreal lash paradise mascara it's drugstore it's nine dollars and it's a game changer and then my third would probably i mean could it be lip plumper oh 100 oh sorry yeah the two-faced lip injections that's so good those three that's all you need that's all you really
Starting point is 00:21:41 need and then like like if i could i would add in like a bronzer like i love the two-faced chocolate bronzer and an eyebrow gel call it a day it's all you need all right you can follow afton at afton is it just afton right afton yeah afton don't try to come steal my name all the aftons out there all they all try to steal our name we love having our friends on this podcast it's actually really fun it's like just being like really like out of brunch with us yeah it was fun to be at flies by i know it goes so fast well this is a quickie um afton thanks for coming on the podcast and i want to use this time to remind everyone that we're almost finish with our season of Lady Gang
