Podcast One presents The Lady Gang, The Hollywood Girl Posse with Lady Gang Quickie.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Let's make this quick. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie. I'm Becky here with Jackie McKelsey. Happy Thursday. Happy Thursday. Guys, I have a splinter in the palm of my hand. How?
Starting point is 00:01:34 But like a little baby splinter. I don't know. I haven't been on a playground in years. What kind of like splinter is that catching? Possibly. I don't know what it is, but I also like don't know how to get this out. You need a tweezer. It's really...
Starting point is 00:01:48 Are you trying to do it with my nails? No. Why? that hurts all right have fun with your splinter splinter i've had a splinter from broadway dance center in new york in the bottom of my foot for like 20 years you should sue them you know what i have i have a piece of lead in my hand that i've had since i was like six since you were like the mechanical pencil yeah you see it yeah yeah that's so weird i have a question did they i actually thought about this the other night do they still have those like pencil sharpeners in
Starting point is 00:02:16 school i've seen them in schools like the handheld yes were you like i gotta walk past mark's desk and get my pencil and my cute jordash jeans do you always do it for the walk by yeah walk by you're so you're so right yeah i was just wondering because i was like have we i was um shooting on a college campus and i saw one and i actually like consciously was like oh that is the weirdest thing i've ever seen because they have electronic ones yeah and they have electronic pencils yeah yeah it's wild maybe it's like a fun maybe it's vintage i just didn't know if we were still using pencils because now they have erasable pens but then my they always had erasable pens but those are garbage those don't really work they leave like a smear i mean i have a replaceable
Starting point is 00:02:59 bujo pen that is gone never seen that writing like your bones like my bones no i was just wondering because my niece like i got her a whole bunch of like really cool pencils for school and she was really excited about it. And I was like, oh, pencils. Well, I also got her makeup and I got her a freaking light LED lit makeup counter three-way folding mirror. Oh, that's nice.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Because she loves to do her makeup. Oh, that's cute. How old is she? She's like eight. That's a great gift. Although eight's a little young to be wearing makeup. She loves the makeup because she's a ballerina. And I gave her all this makeup at Christmas
Starting point is 00:03:37 and it wasn't on her list. Like, I was like, what should i get my niece for her for christmas and her mom like gave me things and then i just went rogue and got her like a caboodle and filled it with makeup that's cute she freaked out she's like oh my god thank you and i was like i know you're too young but i'm a bad auntie and i love it you guys remember back in the day like at the mall kiosks they'd have those those powder stackable little eyeshadows i wonder if those are still around like our kids using those these days I think they are. You know what's back is the lip things that are like, you know, vanilla berry snowflake.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Gross. Love a smacker. A smacker's back. A smacker is back. The Lady Gang. All right. So today on this quickie, we, I thought this would be a great, you guys, we're so far down the Lady Gang rabbit hole. There are people out there that have spent 250 episodes of Lady Gang with us. And I am sorry for that waste of your time. But I thought since the TV show aired and we've been growing and people have been telling their friends, obviously there's a lot of people that maybe haven't listened to the first episode.
Starting point is 00:04:43 So I thought it would be really fun to do a, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hov. But that's like Jay-Z. So this is just me. So I, Jack, in four sentences, take us back to the beginning of Lady Gang. To the beginning? Like what were we doing? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Okay. well first of all kelty and i were maybe acquaintances maybe maybe acquaintances the first meeting that we had for lady gang was the first time that becca and i had ever met yeah podcast one at podcast one and we bs'd our way through meetings incredible that the lady gang was based on our mimosa brunches and having girls off i had never had a mimosa with jack or kelty probably no it's true at all um and we were such little babies i think that we really thought that the lady gang was going to be all about our guest yeah it all depended on the celebrity that we had and we were kind of all just going to jump in and ask questions like we had no idea
Starting point is 00:05:36 what this would have transformed into a hundred percent it's wild okay worst episode best episode well i can't say worse but we've definitely we've learned the hard way to vet people who come on as guess we need to be able to see them outside of just insta story we need to be able to see them in a long form content yeah i would also say that not all comedians are funny no actually many stand-up comedians not funny not even not funny just like very dry and unengaging yeah yeah it's almost like they don't have their act so they don't know what to do or do yeah or like interact with other people that aren't themselves on stage yeah best episode any episode where it's mostly me i'm just kidding um i think one of my favorite episodes was oliver hudson yeah it just turned
Starting point is 00:06:36 into i don't even know i know it was so funny he was so funny set you up on the date i did go on a date and you told the josh josh story i did go out with his friend josh and then josh dumel also came on the date and then i felt like i was on the bachelorette it was very strange um so oliver hudson's episode was good we also loved miko obviously the matt nathanson episode was very special to me in so many ways that reading of the journal was the best moment of my life was iconic it was iconic it was a really iconic time i think the deepest episodes have been alexis from ryan murphy production yes ryan murphy ryan murphy rupaul i mean i have dreamed about being friends with rupaul and even though he doesn't actually know who we are yes he does he actually stopped
Starting point is 00:07:27 me in that hotel once and was like how are the girls in the gang that's so sweet he's the sweetest yeah he's like i every every week when i watch rupaul's drag race i'm always like oh my god rupaul spent an hour of his existence with us he didn't need to do that no he definitely didn't need especially in the beginning for us i know that was when it was early yeah that was like our first year i think but that's why he's had success like that because he's open to new forms he had a podcast before anyone had podcasts yeah what's the tea and he'll come and help the little people he was so beautiful like his freckles like oh my god yeah he's amazing i will say that i feel like we discovered morgan stewart i knew she was a star like she came i didn't really watch rich
Starting point is 00:08:07 kids yeah like i watched it a little bit when i was at the nail salon and like whatever you know i wasn't tuning in every week to watch rich kids when we had her on the podcast i was like she's so great she was so everybody already knew that about her they did it was just you think i was late you think you discover people when like you haven't heard of us yeah right i haven't like i just discovered lizzo like yeah yeah yeah you didn't discover i don't think we've really discovered anyone and we've gotten in trouble in the past by saying that we like made spencer pratt relevant again yeah yeah it's not true but we did definitely turn a new audience back into loving him again yeah i think so and him well we are also just one of the first things that he did
Starting point is 00:08:49 when he was coming back on the scene is our podcast is one of those first things that he like he would have gotten back no matter what yeah spencer pratt was happening no matter what his episode was also one of my favorites and loved it so much also the live show do you remember when he we did the live show in la and he came and he brought us all crystals i still have mine i do too I have mine too, but do you guys know my story about my crystal? No. So he gave us the crystal, and then it was just like a few months later that I had the car accident, and then like the worst year of my life, and I told him that.
Starting point is 00:09:17 I was like, Spencer, your crystal is not good. It's bunk. I don't want this crystal. Bad luck crystal. It's a bad, it has bad zhuzh, and he was like, oh, you need to charge it up, so I put it out in the full moon, and then I went back to him, and I was like, it's still not working. Things are still not great, and he was like, I need to get you a new crystal, and he sent me a new crystal in the mail that's really sweet and like a whole bunch of other ones too it was
Starting point is 00:09:41 really sweet i wear it sometimes and then did your life turn around after that new crystal yes see you know you just had a bunk crystal i had a bunk crystal and by the way when i was at his house i was interviewing him and heidi there are crystals everywhere they have crystals the size of this table remember i was like how much was that like thirty thousand dollars he's like you wish he yeah no remember he said that he went two hundred thousand dollars crystals yeah something like that yeah but he must be doing well because he has like a anyway i think he's doing really well and also i think his crystals crush he sells the crystals yeah and people are constantly buying them yeah well because you need them they work or they don't you need them to recharge my crystals
Starting point is 00:10:20 you need to recharge it you just put it out in the full moon i thought you could recharge them in the sun i think it's whatever you feel because i think it's placebo yeah so it really is you put them in your freezer that makes you feel better the lady gang um did you ever in a million years when we had the first ever meeting at e and we're like oh we're gonna do a digital show we're gonna do a tv show did you ever think like do you remember back at that first conversation we're like we should do a talk show and we're like well no one's gonna give us a talk yeah i remember now we have a talk show i know every time i go to the 101 i'm like oh my god i ate a salad should we go back to the 101 for a meal i think we should a lot except for last time i
Starting point is 00:11:00 should we bring jack like no yeah well we did go there after our la show and then i got food poisoning and then kelty was bombed wasted yeah and then yeah and then i got food poisoning so maybe not maybe we shouldn't i don't think that was from that food i either had the crystals blue or food poisoning i mean but we all ate there and no one else got sick yeah it's true even your mom and dad were there you tell me anyway yeah do you can you even believe what we've accomplished like it blows my mind a little bit i was trying i was telling somebody else about us starting the podcast and i remember i literally remember the day that you texted me about it and you're like do you want to start this thing with i wish we had me and becca i know i wish i had those receipts
Starting point is 00:11:44 as they say on the internet but when you texted me i was like oh i'm like this will be cool because like i was kind of like at a lull with my clothing line and all that and i was like this will just be like a like a cool thing to do you know every once in a while maybe we'll put out a youtube video i love that you were like not planning on working at all seven days a week didn't think we're gonna make money like ever and we didn't for a long time but i was just like this will just be a cool way to a project yeah yeah and now it's a full-time job it's a full-time text message text message when you go to sleep makes me sad because like people constantly ask me questions about like now that you're an ep on a tv show and you've created your own tv show like are you
Starting point is 00:12:26 gonna like try to work on something scripted like you should try to sell a scripted show and i'm like that sounds like a lot of work here's the problem is that i don't have a kelty in the scripted world like i can't on my own it's a bummer that you don't actually have any talents well no organization no like it's a bummer that you don't like have any interest in doing scripted tv because if you did i would ride those coattails too and it would just be incredible you know i didn't write a script is it good about what so oh god I bet it is good you're an amazing writer okay so I had I wanted to do a Thelma and Louise like buddy story should you say this yeah I'll say it it's never getting made so you know my best friend Christina Perry yeah has this like incredible
Starting point is 00:13:10 story and we like she had talked to someone about maybe making a movie based on like her crazy upbringing and then getting discovered and being coming this overnight sensation and then i wrote a script it's i wrote it on vacation once which is why i can never vacation and i wrote it by hand by the way but then i typed it out in a script thing but anyway the story is sort of the story of us i dated her brother we stayed friends he didn't break up with me i handed this song off to this person very like tower records and then she got discovered and then she went through that phase where we were very alienated from each other because she got this fame and it was always me and her against the world and then all of a sudden it was me and
Starting point is 00:13:51 her plus 50 other people on her side and we kind of like were butting heads a lot yeah and then we came back around and it was like we'd see each other at a premiere this is a netflix movie right it's like we're at a premiere and like we're strangers but like we're once like inseparable and then like at the end hopefully you could tie it up in like a nice bow wait i like this idea You do? Because there's a music element. Do you want to read my script? And I could play Christina.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Yeah. No, it's true. You could. With a streak in your head. You're not playing anyone because as we've all discovered, you are not an actor and neither is Kelty. I'm a terrible actor. Are you going to play yourself?
Starting point is 00:14:24 I'm not in it. No, she's going to executive produce. I'm going to be like. Who's going to play you? Someone. Amazing. That has a beautiful horse face. Anyway, I will read.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I will have you read the script. Can you send it to me? I want to read it too. Okay. That actually sounds like a great name. I called her because my baby name was Ever, and so the strip is called End Ever. Like Friends Forever, but it's just End Ever. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Because the Christina character is named Ever. Oh, I like that. Cute. Look at that. Oh, my gosh. This is like a, it's like a romance, but with friends. Yeah, it's like a friend romance. A romance.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Because there was like, there weren't a lot of female stories. Wait, I like this. Can I option it from you? Yeah, you can have it for sure. Cool. Thanks so much. Can you drive this ship? I'll drive this ship.
Starting point is 00:15:11 And can I take all the money? Yeah, I'd like to star in it and take the money and also never have to attend a meeting. Cool. Thanks. Yeah, but you're going to have to do it in between making podcasts. That's fine. Anyway, okay, the last thing I want to do in this quickie is just say a thank you to our listeners. Thank you, listeners.
