Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which
means it's going to be awesome.
Podcast One presents the Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie.
Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek.
Let's make this quick.
Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie.
We are here with special guest, makeup artist extraordinaire, Christina M. Bartzumian.
She is makeupbychristinak on Instagram.
It's Becca, Jack, and Christina.
Kelty is downstairs doing her interviews for Lady Gang TV, and we have taken over the podcast.
A.K.A. her closet.
Yeah, we're in her closet again, and she's going to absolutely hate this episode because
we have no structure, so hold on for the ride of your lives.
Hi, Christina.
Hi, guys.
Welcome, girlfriend.
thank you you've probably seen christina all over our instagrams yeah i've been working with
christina for like almost five years five years yeah yes so she's been doing my makeup for five
years and then i kidnapped her for lady gang and made kelty use her and now kelty won't use anyone
else either so she's kind of the bomb diggity she's a staple how did you guys meet do you want
tell the story um do you want to start it i'll start it so um there was a salon in la that had
like hair and color and cut and all that but they had a separate salon for like day of makeup like
kind of a blushing like a glam lounge yeah okay so like if you had like a wedding or something
you can go there yeah exactly a wedding or an event or whatever um and i went for an event
to get my makeup done a couple times i had a few different girls and then i think it was leah who
suggested that i go to christina yes and so i requested christina and um yeah i just it was
different than anyone else had ever done my makeup we fell in love we fell madly in love
okay so tell us a little bit of your story so my story is that i mean before i started um getting
into makeup i was working in the fashion industry i went to fit them i did i was a fashion design
major and then i worked for like different companies and i wasn't really feeling it
and then when i was about 26 i got a job working for laura mercier and then um like a mall or like
a corporate job yeah at the mall like at bloomingdale's counter manager so would you be
doing people's makeup or you're just i would do be i was doing people's makeup but and then i lived
in dc at the time so and then when i moved back to la i decided to go to school i went to mud
and then i just kind of started from there i started freelancing for nars and bobby brown
and then from there i started working at the salon where i met becca at and then from there
i went to espn and then um just kind of worked my way up from there yeah so she does makeup like
every single day for a different tv show so she does lady gang and um fair game fair game with
Christine Leahy um yeah who also goes to Sherry the same hair person so it's like this weird
we're all connected we're all gonna morph into the same blonde yes we're all the same person
same makeup same color yeah um okay so you like have always been super artistic
yes but like why do you think you're so much better than every other makeup artist
Well, I don't like to say it that way.
I say it.
I mean, it's kind of true.
Yeah.
Like, what do you think sets you apart?
I definitely like to pay attention to how I just finish things, you know.
I'll take my time to, if I see something that I, like, don't like and I feel like I didn't do my best at it, I'll definitely go back and correct it.
Like, maybe not like them, but I'll keep looking at the face and see what I can, like, change or make better.
and then but I just you know like my main thing is like eyebrows too because I feel like eyebrows
really frame the face and skin I'm just major on skin I'll take my time when I apply the foundation
because I really want to make sure like it looks like super smooth and no texture and I don't want
to see any like spots or makeup gathering for foundation what's your tip on application to make
it smooth do you use a beauty blender I do use a beauty blender but sometimes I'll just use a beauty
blender just by itself, but then sometimes I'll use like a brush too. I love like the It Cosmetics
brush. It's a foundation brush and it has a concealer brush on the end. That's one of my
favorite brushes, but it's like a nice like buffing brush also, but just kind of depends. You know,
I think it depends on the person too or what foundation I'm using. So, but sometimes, like I
said, I'll use the brush or I'll use the beauty blender or I might just use a beauty blender by
itself. But there's always a brush somehow comes in, especially like around the nose area or around
the eyebrows, like where you want to kind of get into those little corners and make sure everything
is like even. So don't put it on with your hands like I do. Never. I do it too. Do you ever use a
beauty blender? Yeah. If I'm really taking my time, but if I'm in a rush, I'll put it on like
moisturizer. It's so bad. I literally, I take it in my hands and I like rub it. So it kind of gets
thin and then I kind of just smear it on my face. You know, it's so funny when I worked for NARS
and I was a freelance makeup artist there.
So they didn't have any foundation brushes.
And the way that they teach you how to apply makeup,
they want you to use your hands.
Really?
And I was always so against it.
Ew.
Well, just your fingers are dirty.
Yeah, well, your fingers get dirty,
especially when you work like freelancing.
I mean, you're seeing a lot of people a day
and you're constantly having to touch people's faces.
So I was never okay with it.
So I would always like go and like take a foundation brush
from like another counter and do it without them watching.
And I would have to use, like, the little makeup sponges, like, at the makeup counters that I hated.
But that's all I had.
So that's all I had to work with.
So if you're going to go into a, like, CVS, Walgreens, like, pharmacy, what is that?
Drugstore?
Drugstore.
Drugstore.
What items are you willing to buy, like, makeup-wise?
If you're on a budget, what are your favorite things?
Well, and also, there has to be a couple items that, like, when we did our podcast with Afton last week,
they're like three of our favorite things were from drugstores like sometimes the drugstore
brands are better than the regular brands so this is really funny this was about a week ago and i
was doing my morning workout at orange dairy before i was going to go to my fair game and i
literally like came to me while i was doing my treadmill run that i forgot all my face brushes
at home so i was like oh my god it was like early in the morning so and i had to go to fair game
right after so i went to cvs i was waiting for them to open the door at 8 a.m and i bought four
foundation brushes that saved the day and they were for all from elf cosmetics so that's a good
brand though yeah they definitely have really good um brushes i don't like their makeup i've
tried their eyeshadows before and they break really easy and they're not um they don't have
a lot of like pigment but i think if you were to go with the foundation l'oreal definitely has good
foundations. Um, Maybelline has like a good concealer. I mean, there's just different
stuff, but like, you know, you can always buy lipsticks. There's that one brand Milani. They
have a good, um, bronzer brand. Yeah. So, but if I was just, if I needed like three things and I
had to get it at the, um, drugstore drugstore, it would probably definitely be a L'Oreal foundation.
and then i'd probably do the maybelline concealer and then i would need some uh lips so i guess i
could do oh well most drugstores now have uh nyx oh my god they're i like they actually have a lot
of good stuff lipstick is is the best yeah that's what i found today did you yeah they're like four
bucks voluminous mascara oh yeah of course that's what we use every day is that the pink one the
gray i have switched up my mascara you have yes oh i've been using the uh benefit cosmetics
i forgot the name but better than sex no it's not the better than sex it's a black bottle and has
like these little studs you remember you thought it was like a valentino mascara but i've just
been noticing sometimes with the l'oreal like i felt like it was coming down into the concealer
and stuff especially if you have long lashes and um i don't think the benefit cosmetics one does
that but it's a really good mascara yeah what do you think about eyelash extensions on girls
are you pro or against against why um i just think that they will not think but they do damage your
lashes and i have really good lashes like becca has really good lashes and i just don't believe
like you should i mean because ruining your lashes is just bad because what are you going to do how
are you going to grow them back you know and i mean if you put extensions in your hair you're
to have to keep doing it right and when you take them out like your hair's not going to feel the
same it's going to be the same with your lashes but at least with hair like hair grows way faster
than you know lashes do and there's so much more hair on your head than there's actual lashes on
your eye right and i mean for me it's such a big deal like i could just put some mascara on and
leave the house and i feel like my eyes can look really good and i just would never i i always tell
people like don't put lash extensions it's not worth it no i've heard they're uncomfortable too
You can't wash your eyes.
All I want to do is rub my eyes.
The Lady Gang.
Question.
What is your best slash worst celebrity makeup experience?
Name names.
You don't have to name names.
I'm just kidding.
Or you can.
Who was like the rudest or...
Well, you do a lot of brides.
Yeah.
I don't think...
I mean, I guess the coolest experience was when I did Justin Bieber.
oh yeah what did you do on his face he was gonna be on tv yeah it was just like a little bit of
like concealer um yeah like concealer tinted moisturizer and a little bit of bronzer it was
like nothing big it was just because he was going to be on tv and so it was like a quick like five
minute thing was he nice to you he was very nice where'd you do it at his house no at the montage
oh because he like lived there right in orange county i think no beverly hills beverly hills
everyone sees him walking around the montage in like a bathrobe all the time yeah he probably
just stays there when he wants to do you remember he lived in calabasas and he got kicked out of
calabasas because of all his like parties or whatever back in the day yep and i think since
then he's never owned a house in la or like he always lives at the montage something like that
i don't know so he just pays a thousand dollars a night to just like stay at a hotel yeah i would
that's the life right heck yeah so do you know what your worst experience is with somebody
um i haven't had any bad experiences honestly with makeup i mean i've definitely had
brides have always been good i've never even had any bride problems but i've had like
annoying bridesmaids that's for sure oh i feel like the bridesmaids get really
crazy or annoying mother-in-laws or mom i can see like a mother-in-law or a mom yeah for sure
what's your best advice for brides my best advice for makeup to prep yeah like if a bride is getting
married in x amount of months well you know i'm getting married yes so what are the better
questions what are you doing for your face i mean i'm not doing anything um like special
i am using proactive right now are you just because i feel like it really clears up my skin
even though i don't really have any issues but yeah i just feel like it just makes it like look
a little better um as far as like i mean preparing for it obviously i suggest botox if you're getting
any wrinkles or lines not if you're young but if you're starting to see any sort of like wrinkle
appearance on your face and you're gonna be a bride take care of it moisturize your skin
because i see a lot of dry dry skin you do moisturize your lips i wear a chapstick all day
long i have it with me when i go to the gym i have it by my bed i have it in my purse i have
it when i drive like i'm applying chapstick all day yeah because there's nothing worse than like
seeing like chap lips you know you want to see smooth skin moisturized skin and moisturized lips
yeah but again yeah botox so just i mean just the basics for me you know as long as you take
care of your skin like i don't think you have to do anything extra what about like for glam on the
day well you know what my favorite look is bronzy pretty no dark eyes no overpowering lashes i love
doing the individuals because i just feel like it looks so much prettier and more natural like you
don't want to look like you're extra extra done up because you have to realize that or remember
you're going to see people during the day and you don't want the sun shining on your face and you
look like you're just caked with makeup on that's the thing i find a lot with with brides is that
they're doing so much glam and they're putting on so much makeup that it looks great in photos
and it looks great at night but like you're standing a lot of the time in broad daylight
natural sunlight saying your vows across from your husband you have a strip lash and you have
like a strip lash and like a crazy contour on makeup that's the thing that i think of every
time i see a bride like he's probably terrified looking at you well especially yeah girls that
don't usually wear that much makeup yes and then also i guess you got to think that like
maybe not lean in too far to trends and stuff because you're going to be looking at these
yeah hopefully the rest of your life or what's your least favorite makeup trend right now
how do you feel about like the weird um eyeliner that they're doing at the crease of the eyelid
with a liner like a cut crease but like with like different like neon colors and yeah i mean
do you mean like a line on the or just like you're like they're basically doing like a cut crease so
it's like into the crease of it's almost like a design yeah like and it's like in these neon
colors i mean look i think the whole purpose of makeup is to make us look better so if you want
to look like artistic or you're going to be in some like photo shoot or runway go for it you
better put a put on a whole costume with it then you know right but i feel like if you just want
to look pretty then why would i want to do that i just don't think that makeup's pretty it's not
my style you know like like i said it'd look really cool in like a photo shoot or editorial
or runway or something like that or if you're just like going to like edc or something you
just want to pop some neon colors on and look a little like unicornish or something i don't know
yeah do you do a nose contour because we had a huge discussion about this before
because what was the nose well because i saw this picture i forget who it was but it was something
that kind of looked like me but she had like the nose contour i was like why are we nose contouring
me she's like that what this girl has in this photo looks terrifying in person oh yeah like
you can do a little bit but like you could tell it was well so there's obviously different ways
of contouring right so you can do with cream and powder and then you can do cream and powder on
top of each other or you can just do powder so for highlight i use like the concealer and i just
use like a lighter color and i don't do a lot like i'll do it in like small little areas and i just
blend it out with the concealer but for the nose when i contour becca or kelty i always just use
like a light bronzer color like i use hula and there's a new lighter shade of hula that i like
to use and i just like it because it looks more natural and you still see like a contour but it
doesn't look scary in person it doesn't look like wow this girl has like a lot of makeup coming down
her nose because i have seen like heavy contours in person and i don't believe they look good like
you can pull that off nighttime if it's darker but during the day like it's not cute so it's
not my style i like that trick that you use which with the lighter concealer versus a highlighter
so i feel like i see a lot of girls using a highlight in places that would look better if
it was just a light concealer yeah because they're like glowing they look like a light bulb like the
whole face is like lit up so christina does this thing where she goes down my nose and under the
eyes under the eyes and like up to my middle of my forehead and a little bit in the chin and then
like right over the cupid's bow yeah like where you would naturally want to put highlight but
like not a lot like a little just a shade lighter where you wouldn't even notice it so just sort of
like and that's that's like um recently Chrissy Teigen posted a picture from an airport bathroom
and she was like mid highlight or uh concealer and she had stripes of like really really really
light concealer under her eyes and like kind of through her cheekbone and like that's how you get
that weird Kardashian like dimension right but that's like I think what girls are using highlight
for which they shouldn't be i mean you know it's just yeah it's just whatever you want to look like
i guess and you could do that like i said if you want to do a heavier highlight again during the
day it's not going to look that good if you want to do it at nighttime like go for it that's true
you better set it really well too with powder set that translucent powder ish that's too confusing
for me that's true i can't do it i can't even put foundation on my face at all no stop using your
hands also i'll buy you a brush yeah get her a brush elf cosmetics has a really good um like
buffing brush for foundation done cheap but by the way they totally raised their prices too
i mean they did they used to be like that brush used to be like three five dollars
and then when i bought those four brushes that day i spent like 30 31 dollars at cvs and i was
like what they just know that i'm buying their shit yeah i recently left my makeup in la and i
was going back and forth from palm springs to la and i had to go out to dinner after work one night
in palm springs and i literally had no makeup other than makeup that they put on me for the
movie and i'd been in it for like 10 hours and so i was like i have to wash my face i have to
reapply but i have no makeup i went to cvs and i had like a shopping spree of makeup and i feel
like i got some really good stuff what'd you get yeah yeah i never know what to get i did obviously
the l'oreal mascara yeah the cover girl like stick for concealer under the eye is really good
the milani bronzer yeah it's like a bronzer highlight blush trio uh-huh was really good
and then i did just like a really simple uh like bronzy eyeshadow palette from i think it was
l'oreal but like it was pretty decent you know you could have just used a bronzer or highlighter i
I mean, blushing for your eyes, too.
That's true.
I do that a lot.
Yeah, Christina uses a bronzer a lot on my eyelid, which I like that trick because it's kind of like...
You can use highlighters on your eyes.
You can use them underneath the eye, and then you can use a bronzer in the crease of the eye, too.
I mean, you can use it anywhere, but they're just pigmented powder products, so it's going to work.
Honestly, probably the same thing as eyeshadow.
And it's not as dramatic as an eyeshadow.
It's kind of like an in-between.
a little tip that i like if you just want to do like an easy like you know what you were just
saying you went to cvs and you had to buy a few things if you just buy even like the foundation
or whatever or like if if you didn't get foundation what you can do is get like a liquid
or uh like a cream um blush which would look great if you want to do something really quick
because you can literally use your hands to blend it into your cheeks and if like you know like you
said like you didn't have much time and you didn't have anything with you so that's a good
thing to buy so like a cream product product yeah like a blush because then you can use it on your
lips too multi-faceted products all right so uh one last thing if you were stranded on a desert
island deserted deserted deserted island dipshit if you're deserted you're on a desert island
eating dessert um if you could have one product one makeup product only what would it be
uh my anastasia or my brow is yeah from anastasia oh i used to use that or the benefit one
yeah i like them like both equally the same actually but anastasia taupe for me is like
my favorite i mean it's a good one that was my one yeah the brow is do you have your eyebrows
microbladed or no she just smells good she's got that good armenian hair i know um all right
what one product would you splurge on what's worth all the money foundation um yeah definitely
foundation you have favorite which brand i've been using the armani right now which i was kind
of always like for i used to use it way back in the day and then i stopped liking it because i
thought it was like just moving around a lot on the face but then i just recently started using
it again and i've been loving it and i started using their concealer too which i love also
great worth it and i also love the charlotte tobery concealer too she has but i've been like
really enjoying this armani concealer right now great all right well this was our makeup session
with makeup by christina k on instagram you've seen her eight million times mentioned on our
stories yeah christina with a k um so follow her she always posts beautiful makeup pictures
