Starting point is 00:00:00 As you know, ladies give back and this year we have partnered with Children's Hospital Los Angeles Make March Matter. It's a special month-long fundraising campaign that takes place right in our neighborhood to support Children's Hospital Los Angeles, which is a non-profit pediatric hospital that's ranked among the top five in the nation. More children receive care from Children's Hospital LA than anywhere else in our region and we need to help them make sure they can provide all their patients with the same world-class medical care. That is why for the entire month of march the lady gang is raising awareness by donating 20 of our proceeds from our store to the children's hospital of los angeles so visit shop.theladygang.com to give
Starting point is 00:00:36 back and we have some super cute items that are up to 60 off right now in our warehouse sale and so make march matter with us thank you it's time for a quickie podcast one presents the lady gang the hollywood girl posse with lady gang quickie here's kelty knight becca tobin and jack vanek Let's make this quick. Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie. I'm Kelty Knight here with Jack Vanek. We are all alone because our darling Becca Tobin is on maternity leave right now.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Baby Ford is here in the world. If you have no idea what we're talking about, please go to Becca's Instagram. She's a mom, by the way. She's a mom. Sorry we had to keep this secret from you for so long. And we were doing these like solo recordings, and I really thought that Kelty was the one that really keeps us together, but there has never been a messier day of recording podcasts than it's today. So maybe it's somehow Becca, but by not doing anything.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Becca's a grounding, like a grounding energy. Yeah. Like you're, you're a little wild. You're spinning and I have 900 things going on and I'm like not focused. I just, I don't know. It might just be that time of the life. Time of the life. Time of the life. Yeah. We're going to talk about the time of the life we are going to talk about the time of life but we're so happy for Becca and um we're we're checking in we've you know she hasn't sent us any I mean we got we got to see the baby we saw the baby for like one second on zoom that's all we get wanted to do a meeting and then I was like can we see the baby like she's rationing him out to us we're just like waiting for her to let us know when we can see him again because we don't want to ask and be
Starting point is 00:02:11 annoying I guess we'll be uh taking our flight to Austin and just knock knock knock aunties are here Auntie Zahia. We're ready. But, um, so I thought since we had this time and she's often in mama land, um, we talk about me. No, I'm just kidding. No, I was, I will listen. I'm so excited because I have a new show. I know. Well, you haven't talked about it. Well, you alluded to it in one of the good week, bad weeks, but you couldn't really say that much just because you're still in like, is it going to get picked up? Is it not going to get picked up? So now here's your opportunity to really tell the whole story of super fan for everybody to hear. I think, and this is exciting. And Jack was a major part of this. So it's pretty, it's pretty cool. So
Starting point is 00:02:54 let me just like, take you back into how, so early, early, early, when I was like a professional dancer, I used to have this YouTube channel and I made a show called stage, right. And girl were the rockets. So I was like the stage, right. And girl, and I would like make all these stupid videos of me. And that's like kind of how I started making shit and then, you know, blogged and whatever. Um, and then when I, I ended up, I was, this is a very long story, but I was at like a brunch with some like people I would, cause I was like in an, I don't know, I had written that book, the terrible first book, right. Rockettes, rock stars and rock bottom classic bestseller. Well, no, at the time, here's what happened at the time I got introduced to our still lawyer,
Starting point is 00:03:38 Carolyn Conrad. And she had got me introduced to all the agencies and actually Rockettes, Rockstars and Rock Bottom had been optioned by a production company and to make a TV show based on it. And Hilary Duff, I took a meeting with Hilary Duff to play me. I swear to God, she didn't do it and never went anywhere, but I definitely sat on the CBS lot way before I worked there. I can't even remember the production company, but there was this whole idea that we're going to do this like young dancer in New York city, like sex and city version. And Hilary Duff was going to play me. That is insane. Just letting you know, how have you never shared that story? I don't know because I'm just like, well, and then it didn't happen. I, you know, I don't like to share my
Starting point is 00:04:17 disappointments. So, um, anyway, so after that I met Carolyn and then I was, uh, you know, auditioning, um, for like dance jobs. And I saw this like hosting job for live nation. I was like, well, I love having sex with musicians. Um, and I love talking. So maybe I could do this job. Cause like when you're a struggling dancer, you'll literally do anything for a hundred dollars. I mean, not anything, but like pretty close. Yeah. I once like got painted gold in a bikini and had my hair slicked back in a ponytail and danced as like a golden statue at a bar mitzvah. Like you'll do anything for a hundred bucks, you know? So I was like, okay, I can do this job. So I applied for this job at live nation and I got the job. And I was like this music host. And ever since
Starting point is 00:04:57 then I was like, I am the greatest VJ on the planet. Now, VJ, I realized that many of you youths don't understand what VJ is. Jack, this happened to me on Instagram. Someone was like, what's a VJ? I mean, TRL? Carson Daly? It's a DJ for videos, guys. Yes. A video DJ. Well, they don't have, we don't even have music videos anymore. Really? I mean, not really. So, so yeah. So I was like, I'm going to be a VJ like MTV. This is my next life. Yeah. So shortly after that, this show that I was doing for live nation got canceled. Um, famously Chris Knight told me at his 30th birthday, sorry about your shop. Then I loved him cause he was an asshole. Anyway, long story short. Um, then I was at this brunch about this Taylor Duff book and I met a woman who
Starting point is 00:05:39 worked at CBS and she was like, Hey, I know this is crazy, but like, we're starting some online stuff. Could you like maybe do like videos for CBS the way you did for your blog for buzz net? and I was like sure I had no idea I didn't even own a television guys like I went to work on that lot with a fucking handy cam and iMovie and I would like I saw the pictures I would make my own videos I'd like find I literally used to get the LA weekly see who was in town that week for a concert and then like write their website being like hi I'd like to interview one republic oh my god you know and all those bands were babies at the time and then over time I figured out how publicist and how the whole game works. So anyway, that's how I got into start working at CBS. So
Starting point is 00:06:22 then I kept getting moved up and like, I was online and then, sorry, I have something in my mouth. And then eventually the boss at, um, at the insider and entertainment tonight was like, oh, we're out of correspondence. Like get that weird girl with a purple hair and like, we'll use her. Cause at the time I was doing like purple clip in tips. Remember when tips, but colored tips was like way before Taylor Swift lover. Anyway. So I was so excited and I got put up. And then I spent 10 years like being on TV. And then I will finally admit to everyone like two years ago, right at the beginning of the pandemic, I had a little bit of a money. How do we even explain it? I don't even know what you're saying. We had a budgetary
Starting point is 00:07:04 issue with my job at ET. We had a budgetary, a budgetary time issue. And, and I, I believed that my time after a decade and how many hours a day I worked and how many weekends I worked and the amount of work I did was worth this certain number. And obviously they did not agree. And that's okay. Like there's no hard feelings there. It's like, you know, this is what happens. And I was glad for myself that I didn't cave because I could have caved and been like, it's fine. Just treat me like whatever. And I'll just keep the job because it was a very high profile job that got me a lot of opportunities. But instead I really, and I talk about this in the book, so I don't want to give too much away, but like, I, instead I was like, okay, I'm walking away
Starting point is 00:07:52 here. I kind of like committed to just working part-time for them, which was great. And it actually, I'm very thankful for that. Cause it kind of made ripping the bandaid off something I'd done every day for 10 years, a little easier, but like I packed up my office, I sold all my dresses. Like I was like out of TV and I felt like a loser. But right after that, my friend at the network, her name's Jodi. She's now my partner in our production company, Yacht Money. Great name. I know. So good. Right. So by the way, can you make me a logo? Anyway, you can pay me with the super fan money now. Exactly. So Jodi, there was a huge like amount of layoffs at CBS and she'd been an executive there for 20 years. So how weird that like two
Starting point is 00:08:32 friends kind of going through a similar situation where we're like, what are we going to do with our lives? And I had had this idea for a music show for like 15 years. I had originally called it fans versus bands. And I actually had it registered with like the director's guild, like did all the things. And it just never was right. It was never the right thing. And I sat Jodi down and I was like, I have this idea. Like I just, I've loved being a part of so many different fandoms. I hated being a part of the panic at the disco fandom when like we were pitted against each other, but like, that was my secretly loved it. I secretly still love it. But like fandoms like are so interesting and fans of things. Yeah. It's like such a cool world.
Starting point is 00:09:10 And I was like, there needs to be a show. First of all, there needs to be music back on television because there's like really nowhere. So the way it came about is that I was talking to Chris and of course he's in the music business. And it was like, what are your big A-list clients do? Like, what do they, where do they go when they need to promote something? They get three minutes on Jimmy Kimmel. They make a music video that nobody watches. They may be going good morning, America. Like, yeah, I don't know. How do you, I mean, you're cool. So like you find out about music, but like, how do you find out about pop culture in the general sense? Yeah. I don't know. I guess you kind of just do your rounds. You like, maybe you're a guest star on the voice
Starting point is 00:09:44 or something like that. And then that's about it. Right. And it's like, how do you hit stale? It's stale. And like, obviously if you follow Rihanna, you're going to know the Rihanna stuff that comes out on Instagram. But even with the algorithm, like a quarter of her fans are seeing her shit. So I was like, let me create like something, a musical, something. And so Jodi and I got together and I had this original idea and she was like, okay, let me, let me executive this for you. Cause like, there's a whole box of perfect, like just not going to work. And we came up with this show, super fan. And that was in the beginning of COVID. So it was two years ago. And I wrote out everything. We were like so intense about, we sit in my living room, like
Starting point is 00:10:21 really figure out what it was. And then I went to Jack and I was like, can you make me a beautiful Jack Vanek deck. And it was Jack Vanek's deck that sold the show. It was, we sent it into CBS. We took a meeting, um, and we pitched it to like 15 times to like all the different levels of people and it changed and it grew. And like, so the deck that Jack made was on Luke Bryan. So the whole show we made was like the Luke Bryan super fan episode. And like, I don't know why I chose Luke Bryan because I am not a super fan of Luke Bryan. Like I love Luke Bryan. I think he's a nice guy. There's like, come crash my party, live your life. But like, why I didn't make it Matt Nathanson is like beyond me. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:11:00 They'd be like, so what channel are you trying to do this on? I'm like, this is so weird. So, um, so anyway, we made this whole Luke Bryan deck and then they were like, okay, we like, we really love it. And then it's COVID. Yeah. And then it's like, okay, well, we're not making TV. No networks have any money. Like, well, they have money obviously, but they don't have money for this. Um, and, and I spent all of COVID just waiting to hear something. So like we sat, we're doing Lady Gang, we're moving forward and I'm just on pins and needles. Every single day of my life, I would wake up waiting to hear if this show was going to go or not. And it seemed, it seemed really good. And then it
Starting point is 00:11:37 seemed really bad. And then it seemed really good. And then it seemed really bad. And then like, I remember being once in my car on the way to Palm Springs and I got a call that they were like, they're picking it up. And I'm like crying. I called my lawyer, Carolyn. I was like, oh my God, I did. I called Chris. He's like, yeah, like we're so excited. And then a week later, it's like, Ooh, we spoke too soon. But that's like a normal thing for the entertainment industry is just to kind of be told yes and no. And yes. And no, even now it's like until that deadline article came out, I know you're just like, Oh my, who knows? I know. And still I'm like, who knows? Yeah. You know, like anything could happen. And so then we were sitting, um, it was up and down
Starting point is 00:12:16 and up and down. And like, I mean so many things, but just so you know, like, I think the average of amount of shows that gets pitched to like a network, like a big network like that is like probably five or 600 shows a year. And especially with CBS, they have so many long-term shows. Like I just looked at the Tuesday night ratings and it's like FBI 7.1 million people are watching it. And CIS 9 million people are watching it. Like it's such, you don't even understand, like you think the streamers are big and like, yes they are, but like network television is massive still. Like there's just so many people watching it. And so they don't have room to try something new when their show that's on is getting 10 million viewers. Like they don't really like
Starting point is 00:12:58 change it up that often. So it's the hardest network to get a show sold to. I, you know, I love an impossible situation. So, um, so anyway, so we hear like, it's going to be fine. It's going to be okay. And then we were in New York for fashion week. Yeah. And was that, was I crying in the lobby because it was happening or it wasn't happening? I can't remember what it was. Okay. When we come back, I'm going to tell the rest of this actual super embarrassing story. If you've ever gone to the lady gang.com, then you've gone to a Squarespace website. I've been Palm Springs. I was so excited about it. I'm crying a couple months
Starting point is 00:15:28 later. Like I'm celebrating. I'm like, Oh my God, I have a new show. I have a new show. Um, and then I get a text from my business partner and she was like, honestly, like, we're worried. I don't, I don't think this is going to go. And I was here with Chris. I was so upset. You guys, I drank an entire bottle of wine from the bottle by myself, sitting in my chairs here in my bedroom and I'm bawling. And Chris is like, it's okay, babe. Like the lady is so popular, whatever. And I'm just crying out. I still want to be a star. I still want to be a star. It's like, it was like your innermost ego. My innermost ego. That was just so damaged. Cause it's like still your biggest dream. And I was so broken after leaving ET, but I had this little
Starting point is 00:16:23 flicker of like, it's okay because you're moving on, you're doing another thing. So even though you feel worthless in this moment, you're working on a bigger project. You're worth it. Like you're worth it. Someone else thinks you're worth it. Like this might not be, you know, and I love ET and like, I'm always a part of that family for sure. But like, there was a part of me that was like, kind of like when you break up with your boyfriend and you're like, you have a rebound And you're like, okay, it doesn't matter that like the love of my life is not into me. Like I'm okay because I've got new hot guy and I'll just focus all my energy on that. So when that fell out from under me, desperation is nation. Yes. So then Jack and I go, we spent a lot of
Starting point is 00:16:57 time together this year. We did. Um, Jack and I go to fashion week, which is the most like soul crushing thing probably of all time. Cause you're like, let me get all dressed up and like call the paparazzi myself and then be like, hi, I'm Kelty. I was invited here. Do you want to take a picture? Neither of us wanted to be there, but somehow we ended up there anyway. This is very strange. So we go to fashion week and we're working from the lobby of the hotel. And I think I get a call that it's on again. Maybe. Yeah. Or yeah, it must've been on again or like, oh, it's still in play. I think it was,
Starting point is 00:17:26 that was still in play. And then I start crying then again. Anyway, that was like a year ago, guys. So it's been an entire year of up and down since then. My parents are like, what are you doing for a job? Like, anyway, so in January we got the word, like we got to move. And we want to, we want to start really working on this. So since then we've been like in full tilt. Um, and I had no idea the deadline article was going to come out. Like I knew that they were going to announce it soon-ish. I had no idea it was going to come out on the day that Becca announced her baby. Like, I feel like, I'm like, Oh my God. And then people are like, you would do this. And I was like, Oh my God, like people think I'm that person sometimes,
Starting point is 00:18:05 but i couldn't here's the thing i wanted to put it out because we're casting the fans yeah like now yeah superfancasting.com it wasn't your fault we're casting the fans and we want people to know that the show is real because what was happening is with um when you're probably getting in trouble but i've been posting about it shania twain's episode like a lot of the shania twain fans are writing in to shania's fan club and being like is this a catfish right right because it doesn't seem real if you can't say the network it's on. Yeah. So now that it's out, you can say the network is on. I think we'll get like more people applying and stuff. I mean, we're already getting crazy people applying. There's like lady gangers that have applied. I see you girl. Um, but yeah,
Starting point is 00:18:43 it's just been like such a wild ride. So now I just have to work my ass off for the next three months, actually get it filmed. Yep. And then once you film it, you have to get them to air it. And then once it airs, it has to rate incredibly well just that we can get a second season. Yeah. So it's like, it's a never ending heartbreak that I know I'm putting myself up for, but this is what I'm doing. You do do this to yourself, but I feel like this is your, this was your calling. You're meant to make like really big TV. And I'm glad that it's finally, yeah. Thanks. I mean, you've always had like the biggest boss energy, especially when it comes to that, you know, how TV works. You've been doing it for so long. Like this is where you deserve to be,
Starting point is 00:19:21 but it is one of those like constant uphill climbs that like anything could happen. And it doesn't mean that what you're doing is bad. There's so many outside elements that could affects something, whether that's budget timing, whatever, and you still have to take the L even if it wasn't you. Right. But hopefully that won't happen. Well, I do feel like Lady Gang TV set me up. Like I was texting Matt Anderson who we worked with on Lady Gang TV the other day. And I was like, you really like taught me, like I learned, I got rid of a lot of toddler energy on that show. Um, and like just being such a perfectionist and wanting things my way that this time I'm like, if I know the answer, like I'll fight for it. But if I don't know the answer, I'm not speaking.
Starting point is 00:20:00 Right. I don't need to figure it all out. Like there, I have experts working with me. Jodi's been making television for 20 years, 20 years with like the biggest people, you know, like it's okay that I don't know what the lighting designer should look like. Like I'm good. It's okay that I don't know really what I know what I like on the set, but like, I don't really know the answers. So it's like, it's kind of refreshing, but, um, it's going to be wild. I'm very nervous, excited, crazy. Can't believe this is happening. Can't believe the universe waited until I was 40 to make it happen. Like there's just so many thoughts about it, you know, I can't wait to see what your outfits are. Yeah. I mean, I guess when we decide who the hosts are going to be,
Starting point is 00:20:37 we'll see if it's going to be me. And if it is, I mean, that's not, it's definitely a chance, but I will see what, how that cookie falls right now. That's the next hurdle. That's the next hurdle. There's always something, but thank you for making the deck. You're welcome. Since then I used my lady gang subscription on Canva to start making my own deck. I'm so happy for you. I know. And you, I'm happy for you too. Um, cause I would be like, Oh, there's one spelling mistake. And Jack would be like, I'm running home to fix it. It was like, always like they need it now. Yeah. Well you have called me even the last two weeks, bawling your eyes out to fix something on Photoshop. So I think it'll still happen. Oh my God. Yeah. Just last week. See, this is the
Starting point is 00:21:18 thing. I knew the deadline article would come out at some point and I'm still crying. Yeah. It's really difficult. The way that you were crying during this call, I thought that Chris left you. I'm not kidding. Are you serious? You said you were bawling your eyes out saying my life is falling apart. And I'm like, either somebody died or Chris is leaving you. And I was out to dinner with my family and my aunts. And I was like, I need to leave the table. I think Kelty is in distress and I might have to go rescue her. Oh my God. And it was just a work problem. I'm such a loser. I mean, very on brand for you, but here's the thing I, and I've been open about this, like when it rains, it pours the best two months of my life, like work wise, as far as like being
Starting point is 00:22:03 able to develop this. And I think lady gang, like we have a very clear picture of what we want to do with the tour and the book being turned into like an exciting, like those work things are like really good. Have I been eating only Cheerios? A hundred percent. Like, is my family kind of a disaster? Yes. Like it's been best and worst, best and worst. So it's constantly like this, like I'm on edge all the time. I have anxiety all the time because I'm like something good is happening and I'm happy and I'm excited. And there's something so bad is happening. And I'm so nervous that the world is ending and then I'm happy again. Like it's just, yeah, you're living in a bit of an extreme. I'll get through it. And I already even upped my Prozac. Great. I went from
Starting point is 00:22:38 30 to 40 milligrams. So I should be calmer. Somehow it's the craziest you've ever been. I know. And Chris is like so funny because he's like, what are you doing? It's like seven o'clock and he's on his way home from work. I think he's wondering if he should order dinner or whatever. And I'm like, I'm like Xanax in bed. And then the next day I'm like Xanax in bed. Like, you know, I gotta do what you gotta do, girl. Yeah. Like sometimes you just need to sleep at 7 PM. That's okay. Anyway, lady fans, I wanted to give this update. Sorry that I just talked about myself for 20 minutes, but we love you. I'm so excited.
