Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which
means it's going to be awesome.
It's time for a quickie.
Podcast One presents the Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie.
Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek.
Let's make this quick.
Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie.
I am Becca Tobin here with Jack and Kelty.
It's quick.
Wait, do you always say your full name?
No, I did that on purpose this time.
You're really trying to screw us up.
I'm really, I'm sending you some psychological warfare.
I don't even know what's real anymore.
What is real?
What is real is that Jack Vanek has literally had a broken phone for seven months.
No, it's only been like a month and I'm just waiting to get the new one.
Why would I fix it if I'm going to get the new phone?
When are you getting the new one?
I don't know any day now.
I haven't decided.
I have no desire to go through that rigmarole.
of setting up a room.
It's not that hard.
You just put the phones next to each other
and they transfer the information.
It's hard.
Do you want to know why?
You know what it feels like?
It feels like moving into a new house
and not going through your junk from your old house
and just moving all the shit from your old house.
It's true.
But now with the cloud,
you don't really,
it doesn't matter.
All the junk lives up in the imaginary cloud.
I'm just sick of the junk.
Yeah, I'm sick of the junk too.
I want to be a minimalist.
On your phone?
I went, yeah.
I went through and like deleted a lot of pictures.
Gina's like,
I don't need all these pictures.
I have so many pictures.
I have.
I can only imagine how many pictures you have of yourself.
It's probably incredible.
Not as much as I used to.
We could wallpaper this entire office.
Should we try?
I went to Dolly Parton's childhood home, The Replica, and it's wallpapered with the newspapers
because that's all they had back in the day to make the house pretty.
She also didn't have running water, right?
Right.
And so I think it would be so...
What if we...
What?
Should we wallpaper or just press articles about me?
We won't have enough.
You could do of me.
Yeah.
Boom.
Okay, so this quickie is all about books
We're calling this the bookish episode
And I want to start off with this question
What is the best book you've ever read?
That's a tough question
Because for different purposes
There's different books
Okay
Like your favorite book
Like what's a book where people are like
What's your favorite book?
Like it's not that hard of a question
Just answer it
My favorite book is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
that's your favorite book favorite book why well it has a lot of meaning to me because you read it
as you were having sex for the first time no um no it was just i think jonathan saffron four is
one of the most beautiful writers ever his writing really resonates with me um and then i loaned the
book to a friend of mine that wrote a bunch of stuff into my book i'm like more just attached
to my actual book it's like an actual and then that friend of mine passed away and that's like
where he lives is in that book oh shit yeah it's just a very sentimental book to me i love that
yeah okay becca you got a favorite books um i really like
novel wise i like pat conroy so south abroad is like one of my favorite books ever
what's ever ever it's about a a group of people who grew up in charleston in this part of charleston
they call it South Abroad and there's like twins and it's all about this guy's recollection of
growing up in this neighborhood with all these different kids and like sort of how they
went through their lives and like there's like the whole AIDS crisis in the 80s is talked about
and I don't know it's cool it's just he's like an incredible incredible writer oh I love that it's
good it's a really good book um obviously my answer is going to be shantaram um i thought
you didn't like that no i didn't like the morning shadow which is the follow-up so he wrote these
like two 1100 page books and shantaram is so good it's about this dude and he's living in india and
he's like gonna be okay but then for some reason i can't remember because i don't remember anything
about books but he um he moves to the slums and becomes like a doctor of the slums because he knew
like some first aid and then it's this whole like life there and there's just this cast of characters
around him that teach him these life lessons through their insights and it's one of those
books where even though i'm not in india and i don't live in the slums like there's just these
things these moments of this book where you're like oh it's like these aha moments throughout
the book that just really really touched me but the first book that i read that made me want to
love books was she's come undone by wally lamb i read it in like junior high school and it was
like about this girl dolores who goes to like some sort of camp and she's fat like and i don't really
know and remember much about it except that i read it like three times in a row and it was the first
like big huge novel where i was like all i want to do is read like i remember that book switching
my brain over to be like all i want to do is you know what's really ruined reading for me
me is like cell phones yeah and social media because you want to be on social media instead
of reading well there's yeah there's so many times that i'm like god i've been scrolling
social media for 30 minutes i could have been reading a book and enriching my life i know that's
why i my i definitely used to read well i barely read anymore but i used to read so much when i
was younger me too and it's hard for me to turn off into reading mode i can't but i'm also someone
who i have such bad add that if i'm not in the right place like physical setting me too and then
also if it's not interesting to me i i cannot absorb it and i can't push myself to get through
a book i can't either if i'm not like 100 into it i've i've stopped so many books halfway through
That's why like with our podcast, um, the stacks, Tracy, the host, she is like, she's
so impressive to me because she sometimes has to read books that she does not have any
interest in reading for the sake of the actual book club podcast.
And like, she'll like muscle through and get through so many books.
She doesn't have, I could never, I would just call it.
And I've given myself permission now.
Like if I don't love a book, I'm like, I'm out.
I've done that too.
How far do you have to get before you can call out 100 pages?
Yeah, like a bit.
Yeah.
You know?
Okay, when we come back, well, before we go, I want to let everyone know, I know that you're
very interested in this.
It was my goal to read 50 books this year.
I only read 39.
That's pretty good.
But I did read some really big ones.
What are you going to read in the Seychelles?
You're a dick.
I'm reading the Oprah Book Club one right now, and it's very, very, very long.
What is it?
Like, I've been reading it forever.
um i can't remember the title right now but it's about like this guy who is like lives underneath
this house and then he comes out and like this whole family in this time what that's what it's
about you're laughing about the way i said it no we're laughing about your delivery but also
this sort of feels like someone telling me about their dream oh my god you're describing books
is like somebody telling you their dream which is my biggest pet peeve i went to a dinner no
No, I'll tell you what's worse.
Oh, because I'm like, it's about this girl.
No, she goes to school.
You're like, I don't really know what it's about.
But then there's, like, he's in India.
And then, like, it's weird because he kind of, like, ends up in this other spot.
I'm like, shut the fuck up.
No, what's worse than someone doing that is I had to sit through a dinner recently with, like, ten people.
And one of my friend's parents were at the dinner.
And these parents are pretty, like, they're very, like, upper crest.
like from like a very like affluent whatever area they're bougie but also they're like intellectual
snobs i hate that and they started i'm not joking you for the entire dinner they went on to describe
a documentary oh no for the entire they went through the entire documentary about jane goodall
Oh, it is a great documentary.
It's a great documentary.
No, the documentary.
Wait, tell us more.
It was before I had watched it.
Oh, that's, no.
And I was like, I almost can't watch this because I have such bad feelings about the
freaking Jane Goodall.
Now I know it.
Because I heard every moment of this for an entire dinner.
That is the worst.
When someone gives you a play-by-play of a movie.
Yeah.
No, thanks.
When we come back, we're going to talk about the best book of the year.
Our book.
The Lady Gang.
And we're back.
Okay.
I don't want to talk about our book.
I'm not going to.
Becca's a hater.
I'm not going to talk about it.
No, I just, we're going to be talking about it so much.
Okay.
I think she's going to talk about, are you talking about the process?
Yes.
Okay.
I just want to talk about a couple things.
So, I wanted to talk about the meeting we had with Andy.
Tell me about that dream again.
Shut up.
No.
So, like, it started off like I think it was nighttime, but then like.
There were bubbles.
Then there was a shark.
But I don't know.
It might have been champagne.
No.
So, it has been.
And I was wearing mittens.
oh my god it has been my dad was there and then he wasn't but he wasn't my dad he was my teacher
and he was doing cartwheels it was on a beach wearing boots
i hate dreams i hate him i hate him so much
okay so it's been my long dream to be a new york to go to the seychelles
i'm losing my mind it's been my long dream we have eight minutes i know to be i know
and i need you guys out of here so i can talk about you okay so we like i'm thinking about
quitting what if you guys heard me through the wall i'm about to facetime my therapist
in the office from a different room
and you guys are going to be listening and I'm going to be like
I can't do it anymore. I just
fucking hate. If I hear
the word seashells
one more fucking time.
I had a dream last night
where I murdered her.
And I was on the beach wearing boots
doing car wheels
with my dad. But he wasn't my dad.
He was my teacher. Were there bubbles? Champagne?
Were we in India?
And you were there.
oh my god okay my stomach hurts um all right so what i was gonna say about the meeting with andy
is that so we were just hanging out we were like chilling about doing our lady gang life
touring living our best lives and then out of the blue do you guys remember out of the blue we got
a cold call for the book from an agent we weren't like we should write a book and like let's go
write a book like we got called by the agent that was like you guys should really do a book
and then she sold the out of it it was like such a process of like it wasn't that hard we went to
New York we met with a couple publishers they were like one was like yeah we'll do it and like that
was it and that's never happened in my whole life everything I've ever done has been like a major
struggle like please pick me this was like pretty easy and even writing the book was easy until just
the last two months I the first round of writing the book when we handed in that first draft I was
like that wasn't that bad well we also were writing the book when we're doing lady gang tv
like the beginning of it like when we're doing all our book is like essays and then a collective
lady gang voice but we're doing our individual essays during lady gang tv so there's a lot
to do at once but i mean it was it was manageable it was manageable it sucked um do you guys remember
when we first started writing it and i had a cork board that had like ever i have the picture i have
it saved for the day that we published the book it's a cork board and under each one of our names
we had all the things that we were going to write and then i bought gold stars on amazon and like
every time someone completed one of their things i like gold star yeah and when i was like away for
a month doing a movie and you guys were like hey we need this essay and i'm like hey go f**k
yourselves remember when i said i didn't want to do this yeah i remember that you did that was
that was a time we were so busy you know that was a crazy crazy time um do you think you're still
gonna post the picture of the post-its when no one buys our book everyone's gonna buy our book
i i do not like to get ahead of myself but i think i think this is one one of the greatest
things we've done i i mean i'm gonna be serious with you like even becca even becca who hates it
the process of doing it like i read your essays and i was like laughing crying feeling all the
feelings like i think that people feel like they really know us because we talk in their ear like
every week but this is a different level like i felt more brave going to a different level that
even i would on the podcast well it's just like a different way of telling a story and as a story
that you would tell maybe on the podcast in a minute you get to explain in like great detail
and with thought um i enjoyed it i loved it but i love writing so it's different for me
and the last thing i was going to say just before we go is that um they did the ladies did make me
take out a very important part of the book that i thought everyone was really gonna love oh god
your bujo workout yes jack and i were sending each other pictures every time we'd take it out
of a draft they'd go one of us would go be like going through the book and we'd find the new place
that you were trying to fit the bujo workout in and i was like this is the herpes of the book
is her bujo workout the best part is why i asked because i'm like going through we have illustrations
in the book yeah and i'm kind of the one that's in charge of you know figuring out the creative
for it whatever and so i'm going through and i'm like kelty's fucking workout thing and i'm like
not much of the book it was gonna be it was kind of gonna be in a fill-in there's some fill-in parts
but it might have been more when we initially thought of it but anyways i was like kelty like
what's the relevance of uh your workout she just wanted to show a bucho she goes
what was her response she goes nothing but it's fucking amazing yeah i'm like okay well you know
what else is amazing the pimple i just popped on my forehead last night i'm not putting pictures
of it in the book she goes then she goes everybody will love it jack what's the relevant of any of
your essays yeah that was the rudest thing you've ever said i was joking it was the funniest i think
i screenshot that part of her text message because i was like this is insane what's the
all that's guilty nothing but it's amazing nothing it's amazing it has nothing to do with anything
the whole thing is just a blank chart because by the way we're paying our illustrator so to have
her waste one of her illustrations on a square is insane this is on 30 squares okay i'm gonna do
something very fun like jack vanek did at the tour this summer if you listen to her true crime
podcast you get a pin when we go on the book tour if you want a copy of the manifest gym workout
table i will have them readily available they will be printed and glossy people are gonna ask
for them just to make fun of you i know no they're not it is the most motivating thing i did this
year for myself the funniest thing is when you have like a whole month and just one one workout
i know it's so that's not motivating to me that's like oh my life jack how many workouts
squares would you have zero zero but i don't need a workout bujo table that's not for me
well it doesn't bring me happy not with that attitude anyway i will just say i loved writing
this book i love the process i am a little bit nervous for people to read it because it is so
in depth and that's it are you nervous about your family reading it becca no they're not going to
read it yes they are i doubt it your parents came to the lady hang one your mom's definitely
going to read it she's going to write the cole's notes and like the study guide i know well i sent
my mom up most of my essays because i always like her like looking over my stuff just my mom is the
best at deciding if something has gone overboard oh in my life okay in my life so she she's a good
proofreader. Oh, good. She proofed.
Jacqueline, you're a fucking idiot. Take this out.
She proofed. Okay. Well, we're so
excited. We're so excited that
Speak for yourself.
