Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, the following podcast is a Lady Gang Network and Podcast One production, which means it's going to be awesome. Podcast One presents the Lady Gang, the Hollywood girl posse with Lady Gang Quickie. Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Let's make this quick. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Lady Gang Quickie with Becca, Kelty, and what? Clayton. so for those of you who don't know who clayton is well clay but on instagram he's known as clayton
Starting point is 00:00:36 hawkins because he does our his air for the lady gang tv show and he's taking the position of jacqueline vanek because jack complained about interviews today and she wanted to go first so frankly she had a bad attitude she had a bad attitude and you know what a bad attitude gets you out of The Lady in Quickie and you've been replaced by Clayton. Yeah, and this is actually an audition. And I just thought that the show needed a little bit more like feminine energy.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Yeah, you're bringing us really good feminine energy. That she sort of wasn't bringing and I thought that I could bring that to the table. Where are you born? Tell us how you got into... He's a celebrity hairstylist.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Like, okay, so remember the girl in Bohemian Rhapsody, Lucy Boynton? Yeah. He just Instagrammed that he did her hair. I know. I've been meaning to ask you about this. And she's a real celeb. She's a real, you guys are real celebs.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Are we? How often do you get asked about our looks? Never. You know, we are waiting for. When's the last time that Allure was like, hey, can we just follow up? We want to get some details on the looks. You know what? I feel that coming soon.
Starting point is 00:01:39 I feel like that's brewing. I already told you, Kelty, 2021 is going to be your year. That's a long time away. He's kind of a psychic slash hairstylist. I am a psychic. Yeah, thank you. Okay, give us like your background and your story. okay well i grew up in la and i always was obsessed with doing hair i did hair from the
Starting point is 00:01:56 time i was a little kid dolls i did the dolls but i was doing the real dolls the women the actual living breathing ones yes so um did you go to school yes my parents made me go to elementary school and middle school and high school in fact did you go to beauty school i did go to beauty school but even before i went to beauty did you yeah libs long island beauty academy no you didn't yeah that doesn't stand for long island no school long island beauty she also went to itt tech no shade to everyone who graduated there i'm sure it's hard for you it's hard um anyway so no i always was obsessed with doing hair i did like when i was in eighth grade i was doing like the senior cool girls hair for prom made bank i would go buy the cheapest
Starting point is 00:02:39 extensions at santee alley because you couldn't get extensions everywhere back then and i would up charge these girls no smart business and yeah i bought my first car doing like prom hair yeah prom hair yeah prom hair but i was doing like cute like the inspo was very like misha barton like beachy waves like i wasn't doing like yeah i wasn't like an updo queen then well i have to say like in all these years that kelty and i have been getting her hair done by subpar people i'm just kidding i'm just kidding we've had amazing people it's cold but like clay is the type of person who goes above and beyond he makes a look he creates like he takes you to a level that you didn't know you could go to you also have a lot of passion which really does it's like a testament to doing
Starting point is 00:03:26 something that you're really passionate about because you end up being really good at it what's the point of doing this if you're not gonna like like i want you guys to look the best you can look and you guys have great hair to begin with so like let's have fun let's serve looks how did you become celebrity stylists like how did you go it was your first celeb yeah well i was actually going to the vanity fair party with my best friend and who's your best friend her name's lizzie olsen and her wait elizabeth olsen elizabeth olsen elizabeth olsen is your best friend lizzie olsen so i was doing did you go to school with her how'd you meet her i've known her since i was a baby since i was like one see that's how you get to be friends with celebrities though
Starting point is 00:04:05 i've been trying all these years to be friends with celebrities you can't infiltrate later but if they were your sister she's so sad i love how you're like nonchalantly like lizzie olsen okay anyway we know i'm not trying to be gross but this is my journey and i'm being gross but this is my journey this is my story and i need your support right now um no so i was going as her date to like vanity fair thing it was one of her first big events she had just started it's a big deal that she got a date because now they've cracked down like a lot of those by the way i thought i was going to be walking the red carpet i really tried to and they were like please move they're like now uh so her hairstylist was getting her ready and i always was doing hair obsessed so
Starting point is 00:04:47 i'm watching him and i'm like oh my gosh how do you do this and i'm handing him pins yeah irons and he's like why don't you actually go to beauty school and you can be my assistant oh so that's awesome wait can you say who his name is his name is mark townsend he's my mentor he's the best i love him so i went to beauty school i did my two years i did my loans and then i emailed him and i was like i'm ready to assist you and he did not respond no for a year i emailed him every month on the first of the month i was like i'm just going to be annoying and then finally he got back to me and i assisted him for four years and then i traveled all over the world with him worked on major things it was awesome and then yeah have you ever done a cover of vogue
Starting point is 00:05:28 uh i've done italian vogue yeah damn did you feel pressure uh no it was awesome it was uh bruce weber and it was just like male models on the side holding puppies and it was no way and great cute so what was a moment in your career where you're like sink or swim i'm i don't know if i'm qualified to do this but i'm here i'm gonna build a full wig on mariah that happens all the time really like this morning us in all of our careers we have those moments where you're like well i don't know if i can do this what am i doing does this make sense but you have to kind of fake it till you make it and i don't know life twirls on and you carry on and it's fine life twirls on it twirls on a memoir by clayton memoirs of a clay shot the lady gang what's it like to be
Starting point is 00:06:17 you know usually on these thursday quickies while the tv show is airing we like to give a little insight what's it been like to get up at five o'clock in the morning with these dolls okay well I don't get up at 5. I get up at 3.30 to be able to get here because I need my meditation time before I can be around you guys' energy. Yeah, it's crazy. So, you know what? This job is actually so fun, and I've loved working with you guys.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Are you just saying that? No. He wouldn't be here if he didn't feel that way because he has a lot of really important people calling him. I really do love being here, and I think you guys are really funny, and I think you guys are just so easy to work with, and I hope that we work together for a long time. I hope it's forever. I think it will be forever.
Starting point is 00:06:54 To be honest, I hope it's forever. Honey, I want to be twirling around those Hallmark premieres for you. Yes. Like, we're going to... Do they give you a budget for, like, a Hallmark premiere? Yeah, yeah. For sure. Well, we don't really do premieres.
Starting point is 00:07:08 We do TCAs, which are, like, the... It's exciting. It is. It is exciting. But we'll go to Pasadena, and we will live it up at the TCA. Yes, honey. Let's go to that hunting town. Guys, I'm about to go off and do another Hallmark movie.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Tomorrow. Oh, my God. I broke the news. Did I break the news? You broke the news. Are you so excited? Do you want to talk about it? I'm excited.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Yeah. What's the premise? Okay, let's guess. Yes. Okay, Clayton, you take a guess, and then I'll take a guess. Becca's your average Gentile farm girl who owns a bakery. She's never loved the meaning of Christmas, but with this Gentile boyfriend, she discovers Christmas, it's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:07:44 So many Gentiles. Well, I just had to clarify that they wouldn't let you play Jewish. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay. Mine is... No, they are doing Hanukkah movies now. Yeah. You have got to get in on this.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Lacey, you and Lacey. Me and Lacey should do Hanukkah Sisters. Oh, my God. A new mystery. A mystery. The Hanukkah Sisters mystery. Wait. The Hanukkah Sisters mystery.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Lacey should be there. And it would be like 11 nights of mystery. How many nights is Hanukkah? Eight. Eight nights of mystery. But honestly, it takes all eight nights to get to the murder. I don't know if I can do that because Lacey would be billed on top of me, like top billing. It would be hard.
Starting point is 00:08:19 But wait. We also have to clarify that your last name is Hanukkah in it, too. Yeah. The Hanukkah Sisters. it's like monica honica oh my gosh monica honica and veronica honica monica and veronica before those eight candles burn out those mysteries get funny and then we have a horror and it is oh it's over the murder happened in the horror it's not i almost died in a It's a Christmas movie.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Oh, okay. No, I'm going to take mine. Okay, tell me. Okay. Small town girl moves to the... No, they would never move you to a big city. Okay. Can't afford it.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Big... Hold on, hold on. Big city girl has to come home and take care of her mom in a small town, and she only owns heels, and she has to clomp around in her Louboutin platforms, and she doesn't even understand what grass is and she's there's no postmates and there's no uber and she's like what the is this bullshit and then she falls in love with harry harry sweeps the street he's a street sweeper yeah that's romantic small town i thought sweep street was the last thing harry sweeps the street what is your movie about it's called the our summer house it actually
Starting point is 00:09:43 takes place in palm springs where we're shooting it in palm springs my sister and i are both engaged we get engaged at the same exact time sister wives yeah we talk about doing a sister wedding well no like a fourth of july wedding we're planning it for my sister at the family's home in palm springs what i'm really excited about is two things number one obviously to do another homework movie because they're a blast i've actually never had an unpleasant experience on any of them and number two is that we're shooting in palm springs and not canada while i love canada a lot it's nice to be able to drive home on the weekends like for two hours it's a two-hour drive versus like the you know schlep from canada i love that for you and i can't wait to tune in
Starting point is 00:10:26 thank you so much my character's name is stephanie stephanie yes stephanie did you have to audition professor oh are you gonna do long hair short hair um short hair stephanie is short stephanie has short hair yeah do you think there's any possibility that we could get a walk-on role absolutely because i'm canadian i'll well but we're not doing canadian oh she went on she explained i'm a terrible thing yeah i know i know but so i thought it was a canadian company never mind no it's all it's all okay you know well i'm so proud of you and the funny thing for becca is like she's always like oh i'm just gonna go to a movie and then me and jack are like oh my god girl slay and she's like she's just very like opposite me i don't really like like she doesn't
Starting point is 00:11:09 like promote her boat where i'm like let's sail the ship honey you are gonna make that boat look like a yacht you know what i mean yeah i'm taking a sail water i'm taking sail but i'm taking standout paddleboard honey and she's in the french riviera boats to continue on with these metaphors and I went way over my head steer right I don't I don't know I was feeling the boat I started it and I was like oh god no oh no you started it I know and I just stand up I just that boat honey I just um I was paddling up no I um just booked a big vacation on a boat is that is that a joke or is that your journey no that's my joke oh i love that in the seychelles yes i'm going to seychelles because i hate when kelty talks about a rich person
Starting point is 00:12:05 no it's a place if you don't know if you don't know the seychelles you're poor that's not true it's true i'm flying on points it is some islands off the coast of africa and it is billed as the most beautiful beaches in the world but it is hell to get there i gotta fly la to london london to doha doha to seychelles so i'm going there and then i'm gonna spend four nights in a hotel and then we're getting on a catamaran okay we're gonna do seven nights on a catamaran but you could be on that catamaran with me because i am not a rich person if you want your own catamaran it's like 30 000 a week are Are you talking to the listeners?
Starting point is 00:12:49 Don't invite anybody. Who are you talking to right now? So if I wanted my own catamaran, it would be $30,000, which I don't have that money. So you can rent a catamaran by cabin. So our catamaran has four cabins, four double cabins. So Chris and I took one of them. So now we don't know. When are you going?
Starting point is 00:13:07 We're going December. I'll go. You want to go? Yeah, that'd be great. Wouldn't it be so fun? For sure. But it's very hard to get there. You want to come?
Starting point is 00:13:14 No. It's the most beautiful beaches. I'm going to say the same thing about that that I said about the pink hair, which is you like it. I love it for you. Wait. Let's talk about Kelsey's pink hair this week. No, I think the pink hair is really cute.
Starting point is 00:13:26 And I think with the makeup and everything, I'm really into it. She made it work. I'm not a fantasy hair color girl. Me neither. This is my first fantasy. I've never had a fantasy. I'm going to be honest. I've never been that girl.
Starting point is 00:13:35 I don't see myself becoming that girl. Yes. That's not- Who you are. That's not me. That's not your journey. That's not my vibe. That's not the path that I'm choosing to walk.
Starting point is 00:13:44 but if that's where you want to go, baby, you go there. I didn't even want to go there. What truly happened is that I had, what triggered this? You know that girls with their hair when they're like emotionally triggered. Yeah. Yeah. You know? So there's a lot of things up in the air right now. I have like contracts and deals and like, what am I going to do next year with my life? And it's all up in the air. And I just like, I'm swaying and I don't really know. And then what actually, it's too sad, but I will say what triggered me the most, I worked all weekend and then on my few hours off, I had to write my will. And then I wrote the will and that is, it takes you to a dark place. You know what I mean? It's like, what do I do with my jewelry?
Starting point is 00:14:22 Who gets grandma's engagement ring after, you know, like it takes you to a dark place. And then I went to target and those things in that order were a mistake. You know what I mean? There was, it was a mistake. I should have targeted and then wrote the will and then went to bed. But instead it was morning will and then afternoon target. And then I was emotional. I went to target i was buying the underwear that are not comfortable i was buying those saint patrick's day cookies that are just all icing and then i went in the hair i went in the hair dye aisle why can we can we circle back to the will clay do you have a will okay so i do have a will and yeah it's not just rich person shit i have a she just called you not rich i shouldn't yeah rude rude okay
Starting point is 00:15:04 you don't know what i go through at night um i do and i actually have a very uh legit life insurance policy yeah good on yourself you should why i unclear early on in my hair career i worked with a woman who made me do it yeah what's for your significant yeah but apparently you should only not you should but like i've heard that it's really only worth doing once you have children no you can pay into it and then you can take out of it in your retirement yeah i have that oh it's like a savings but i do have a will yes yeah what's like who gets your weave oh honey that's getting buried in the mausoleum in the tomb wait do you want to be in a mausoleum too no not at all but i want to be like burnt and like a guy at a restaurant on the grill on the
Starting point is 00:15:54 wait you want to be cremated yeah i don't want to i don't want any of that this is why wait on the record if i die i better be in a mausoleum okay because this is don't burn me we won't burn you please don't burn me but that's the thing about a will that's really hard is that then they ask all those questions what what do you want to do with your organs you don't like well here's the thing i love thinking about how sad people are going to be and literally the stories they're going to tell and i think about they better not use this picture but i hope they use you better make it clear make it because the loved ones that are left behind they don't know and they're in grief and they're like, Oh, the, he looks great in this.
Starting point is 00:16:31 I know, but don't you, when you just hear me here in there in grief, that makes me light up. You're a psychopath. That makes me so happy. No, I was like upset about the organ. Cause it's like, I want to donate all the organs, but then this is what really, I mean, this is a sad topic, but this is what got me. So there's two check marks.
Starting point is 00:16:46 You can donate your organs to like, if you need a heart, you can have my heart or you can donate it to education. And I felt really bad because I was kind of like, listen, do I want to save someone's life? Like, do you need my eyeballs? You can have my eyeballs. Do I necessarily want to be at UCLA where they're just like cutting me apart at school on a Thursday?
Starting point is 00:17:05 Like, I didn't know how I felt about that. And that's what me up. And now I have pink hair. So did you opt into donating for education? No, I couldn't do it. I can always change it, but I couldn't do it. Have you heard that myth about being an organ donor on your license that people don't revive you?
Starting point is 00:17:22 They don't work as hard to save your life. Yes. People say that. That is true. And then you have to do all that stuff. From when I was an EMT, I will tell you that it is true. You were an EMT? No, I'm kidding.
Starting point is 00:17:32 I hate you so much. Anyway, so then I went to Target, and then there was the Rose Goat Temporary Spray. And you see it on Pinterest, and you're like, this is an amazing product. It's going to be great. Kelty, I tease you because I adore you, and I think it looks really cute. It looks cute. It looks fine. I'm going to get fired tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:17:45 From where? I can't have pink hair on the entertainment tonight. Kelty, you've got to stop spiraling. I have to say, you ladies are such hustlers. You have so much going on. We spiral. Well, I wasn't even going to go there. I was just going to say, I think you guys need to count your, like, blessings, and I
Starting point is 00:18:00 think we all are guilty of not being present, because we all have so many things I'm thinking about. I have to be there tomorrow, and that part, and I have to fly there, but I really want you guys to take this moment while we sit here in this closet eating a Diet Coke, and all of our breath smells like onion. I want us all to take this moment to really, like, you guys, major, like, thoughts. We did it. why we love having you around aside from your stellar hair hair yeah honestly if you're a shit
Starting point is 00:18:29 at hair i wouldn't have you but since you're good at hair i'll also have you i mean it is not seriously like i'm bitching about being so busy but like it's not lost on me that like three prayed for this years ago i would have been like begging somebody to make me this busy yeah and being busy like it's great getting up early sucks that's the only thing that it does right the only part of having your dreams come true that sucks is getting up early you're so right once you're there everything's fine yeah but it's like at six o'clock this morning we're like laughing watching vanderpump rules but we're like at 5 15 i was like mother that's exactly true no it's true once you get going part even when i used to have that job where i had to get up at
Starting point is 00:19:09 3 45 like it was my old tv job and when i was an insider and i would like my call time was 4 15 so i'd get up at i've been drive but i remember like the drive there was horrible but then once i sat down and my makeup girl rebecca was doing my makeup we were like there's like 4 45 and we're like like having big laughs like you just kind of get over it yeah yeah i think and i think getting up early sets you up for that hustle life it's true the rest of the day i know okay all the girls that are in the facebook group and follow on instagram like they always ask care questions well here's my thing should we do that as a second episode oh shit are we out of time oh my god all right well all right so if our girls want to follow you clayton's gonna be back next week
Starting point is 00:19:54 clayton hawkins yes on instagram on everything clayton hawkins follow me guys he does some like mage mage mage people mate he creates hair magic so follow him do this next week oh that's a cute look okay all right we love you we love you clayton hawkins oh there's your best friend lizzie lizzie he's coming back next week to answer your hair question See you next.
