Well, this is really exciting, and I want to just caveat this for a second before we get into it. You guys know that I've been on this crazy health journey this year and then recently had found out that I had tungsten poisoning. Um, and tungsten poisoning is from the stage
Starting point is 00:01:57 lights that I stand out underneath. Yeah. So tungsten lead and mercury poisoning. It was my last thing, my mercury and lead were like through the roof. And so now I'm working on that. I know I'm like heebie jeebie and like, there's always something wrong with me, but that is the next step in my health journey. And, um, and it has re brought up a lot of those conversations that becca we were having a couple years ago and jack now with your fungal stuff like we are just we are in our sexy mature era of being so concerned about what we are putting in and on our bodies and so when we fell in love with this brand we were like we've got to have this creator on because what she's doing not only for what we put on our bodies but what we put out into the earth is incredible
Starting point is 00:02:41 so please our guest today was determined to build a company with products that anyone immune compromised could use safely after one of her friends died of cancer she started out as a makeup artist shipping products from her one bedroom queen's apartment and has grown it into one if not the most successful dtc direct-to-consumer beauty brands in the country we love the products celebs love the products and so do beauty experts she's appeared on the today show good morning america she's been featured in the forbes under 30 30 under 30 list. Marie Claire's most powerful women. She's here to share her story and share her beauty insights with us. Please welcome to the podcast, the creator of Thrive Cosmetics, Carissa Bodner.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Thank you so much for having me. I'm, I am a huge fan of the show and I'm so excited to be here today. You have the best red lip of any guests we've ever had. What color is it? Okay. So it is a shade that is going to be launching in about a month and it's our impactful lipstick named Maya. Well, it's a great color. Okay. So coming off of what I was just discussing about like the things that you put on your body, you had this realization, you're one of your best friends passed away from cancer. Tell us that whole story, what that was like for you and how that, how that inspired like your life. Cause I think that's really wild. Yeah. I think that the thing I really like to underscore about Christy is the way that she packed so much impact into her 24 years.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Just because we go through challenging times or sometimes catastrophic times doesn't mean that we're any less of a human. And that's what with Christy, there's been a lot talked about her cancer and how that inspired me. And absolutely. But what I really love about Christy is that she was that magnetic personality that instantly made you feel like you were seen and that you belonged. And while I was out trying to climb the corporate ladder at L'Oreal in their luxury division, she was in Tanzania working at the Tanzanian Children's Fund, who's one of our longtime partners now. And so I really want to start with that because she was such a bright light. And when a bright light like that is taken away from us, it's like, what do we do with that pain? And so, you know, thinking about Christy and really what she stood for, it was about thriving.
Starting point is 00:05:08 It was about making an impact. And one of the things that I got to have a really wonderful journey with her on was being that beauty confidant. And when you're going through cancer, when you're pregnant, when you're immune compromised in general, what you're putting on your body is so crucial. And I think that's, it can be a catalyst for a lot of people thinking about what they're putting on their bodies. like you shared. And that's how it was with Christy and I. And so, you know, that experience
Starting point is 00:05:38 really reinforced to me how important clean beauty is. I'm really passionate about animals. So we've been vegan from the beginning and cruelty-free, of course, but paraben-free, sulfate-free. And I think the other thing about clean beauty, because it can be a little bit of a buzz term, is that it's ever evolving. And I never want to be finished both on, you know, being more sustainable, being more clean, learning more about ingredients and also learning about how we can innovate through that. Can I ask the dumbest question? But I'm just I knew you were coming on and I've been saving it up and I'm so dumb. But like everywhere I go and everything I read, they're like, you don't want sulfates, you don't want parabens. What the hell
Starting point is 00:06:20 is a sulfate? Like, I don't even know. I love answering this question. So sulfates are so the dirtiest one is sodium lauryl sulfate. And you know, when you have a really greasy dish that has a bunch of shit on it, what do you put on that to clean it? Sodium lauryl sulfate. So it's literally penetrating through oils, fats, all these things. And we don't want to do that to our skin. So it's really stripping. It's in most detergents. And even with the detergents and the clean movement, there's definitely a movement to bring those out of those. But sodium lauryl sulfate i would say is it's a surf it's a surfactant but there are natural surfactants as well so you can find surfact like spirulina is one of my favorite surfactants and spirulina is
Starting point is 00:07:06 something that's great to drink and so thinking through like there's always another way and then i you know i think that the term sometimes we with you know how clickbait the world is now you can get really you know cancel an entire category you know magnesium sulfate is not bad So I think it's like thinking really taking it a little step further to, to think about that. Um, and then parabens are sometimes we even have parabens in our foods. Like, I don't know if there's parabens and in Twinkies, but have you ever seen that thing where Twinkies will last and look the same for like 30 years? Yeah. Yes. It's the donuts at 7-Eleven that have been there for like three weeks, still looking fresh. They never rot. And I still want to eat it. And I
Starting point is 00:07:51 I don't want to eat it when I see it. Why is that? But yes, so that's, parabens are preservative and there's a bunch of different methylparaben, things like that. And so, yeah, we've never, we don't use parabens either. It's crazy. Okay. So you're in Queens, you're working up the corporate ladder and you have an idea. Take me from that quickly. I know it was probably the longest, most hardest thing of your life, but take me from that idea to like, you have something to sell in your hands and people are buying it? It's a great question. I had to start with product development because that was what I knew. Product development and makeup artistry was what was in my background and really my original
Starting point is 00:08:35 passion for the industry. And so I knew nothing about starting a business. I literally had to Google how to incorporate a business, which I did a sole proprietorship first. And then it was, I mean, I totally screwed that up via legal Zoom and I've spent more money trying to fix it. But when I'm talking to entrepreneurs, as I do often, I always tell people, just start with where you know, and then take one step forward every single day. And 10 years into this journey, I'm still doing that. So I sucked at managing people when I first started Thrive Cosmetics. Luckily, we didn't have employees for the first few years. But once we got employees and I was so, you know, and I love our team so much, I had to learn how to manage people.
Starting point is 00:09:19 And luckily, I had a passion for that. But, oh, my gosh, have I made so many mistakes in that regard. So, you know, from that perspective, I was formulating in my kitchen. I didn't have access to a lab because I, you know. Like, what do you mean? You're, like, taking the baking soda and taking some bugs and squashing them and putting the, making the lipstick? Not bugs, Kelty. Not my bags.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Oh, yeah. Vegan, vegan. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Vegan, vegan, vegan. Sorry. But it is a great point. Carmine is what makes most red lipsticks or reds and purples. Isn't that a bug?
Starting point is 00:09:53 And so it's actually – yeah, Carmine is a beetle. So it's a crushed beetle. Yeah. We don't do that, which makes it a lot more challenging to create. And I could go on a whole science nerd thing about why that's challenging, but I won't. And so to formulate the products, what I was doing was getting the different ingredients shipped to me because that's what I really understood how to do. Cosmetic chemistry is my passion.
Starting point is 00:10:21 And while, so I mean, full disclosure, I did not get good grades in college. I went to community college. I went to Bellevue Community College in Washington State. Then I went to University of Washington. And while I was in college, what I was really doing was studying how to formulate cosmetics. That was really my passion. and reading things like the cosmetic ingredient dictionary. So formulating things for me is what came natural. Wow. That is so cool. And like, ladies, if you hate your job and you're looking
Starting point is 00:10:49 for a new job, I feel like this is a very cool space to get into. It sounds like I'm kind of hard, but yeah. It seems hard, but it seems very, very interesting. And science can be sexy. Let's be honest. Science can be sexy. That's the thing is like, I mean, I'm so passionate about people in STEM, particularly women, because I, you know, when I, I did terrible in chemistry class because it was not exciting, but teach me about cosmetic chemistry. I'll do that all day long. Well, I love this and I love, I, okay. So I want to know what, what was the first product you made? Infinity waterproof lash adhesive. That product I was making in my Vitamix. Yeah. So, and I should say I never mass produced anything in my, so when you're formulating something, you know, you do
Starting point is 00:11:36 what's in the lab, the bench, you're just doing that on the bench and then you scale it up. And so I had to scale up formulas with the manufacturers that I already knew, which, which was something again that I had in my background, but infinity waterproof eyelash adhesive, it was an acrylic copolymer and water. And it was actually a proprietary way in which we were mixing the ingredients. So it's not just the ingredients that you're putting in the recipe. It's also the way in which you're whipping it. Right. So it's kind of like if you're making cookies. If you add all the things that, you know, you'd have to do it in a sequence. It's really similar to baking, but you know, I will, I will make you a bad-ass lipstick. I will not
Starting point is 00:12:14 make you a good cookie though. I'm a, I'm not good at cooking. I'm really, really good at making lipstick. That is so crazy. What was the first product that Thrive Cosmetics put out that was a hit? Infinity waterproof eyeliner. And what I want to say though, is that I wiped out, wiped out my bank account to produce those. And I thought, oh, you make a website. Of course, these retailers are going to want to carry us. Ignorance was bliss. I was 25 years old. And so I just thought everybody would want to carry the brand. And I wiped out my bank account to fund the production of that. And what I want to say, though, that I think is really important is it sat for a year and a half before it actually started moving. So we are not an overnight sensation. We may have a
Starting point is 00:13:00 product named that, but we, there's no such thing as an overnight sensation in my opinion. And I think, you know, I literally had to look at that inventory in my apartment every day with just a sad face of like, oh, we had zero sales. And so, so it, you know, it was a, when it did hit though, it was amazing. And it was our community that made the product take off, which I think really speaks to the power of the Thrive Cosmetics community. Wait, like how did they take off someone used it and they were like, this is the best product. And then everyone tried it. It was, I'll never forget it. I was actually in Los Angeles and Van Nights working with, it was our first ever domestic abuse giving event. And I logged onto my social afterwards
Starting point is 00:13:44 on Instagram and I saw all of these comments. First of all, I saw our Shopify sales because if anybody's ever been an entrepreneur and they don't have the Shopify app, you have to have the Shopify app. It's like a little ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. So I had that. And then I was like, wait, how are we doing a thousand dollars in sales? Like we have like a hundred dollars on a great day right now. And I just wrapped up the giving event. And I, and so then I Googled us really quick. I was like, did we have a press hit, a celebrity mention? Like what happened? Cause that, that had kind of helped us a little bit, but definitely not enough to pay myself or hire anybody. And when I, when I logged onto social, I saw all these people talking about
Starting point is 00:14:29 how it was the best eyeliner they had ever used. And so even though we had been featured in magazines and we had all kinds of celebrities wearing our products, that was not what made us take off. It was really the community spreading the word, tagging their friends saying, you need this. This is the best. It stays on my waterline. I'm an ophthalmologist. I mean, we have people in our community, our customers that were ophthalmologists and dermatologists literally giving us endorsements there. And so it was this virality and I'll never forget it because it was a thousand dollars a day in sales. And then I called my sister. I was like, oh my gosh, okay. If we, if we do 5,000, I'm like, I'm totally going to lose it. And that was the next day.
Starting point is 00:15:09 And then it was 25,000. Then it was 40,000, which had been our best sales day ever. When we had a five minute piece on the today show a year prior. So I'll never forget it. I even have the magnets that we shipped out. We did gift with purchase for the people who, um, who purchased when it had sold out and we, they literally pre-ordered three months in advance and it helped me fund the inventory. So, yeah, yeah. So it was, it was crazy. Infinity waterproof eyeliner will always be my baby. Like Mariah says, like always, always be my baby. It's why I'm here today. Well, no, and I love this. And so, okay. So my question is about, um, the, your sustainability and, and so this is something that, and I'm going to be straight up honest about Lady Gang. Like
Starting point is 00:15:59 we throughout our years have given back, um, every year, every six months, we're looking for new, interesting ways to give back. And we've, you know, we did a menstrual cup like thing. And so we're donating money. And so, you know, we're doing all of those things, but I wouldn't say it's like, it's not at the forefront. It's not in our name, our brand name, you know, like we want to be there for our community and we try to do a really good job. But when you're running a small business, it is so difficult because when you are running a small business, it's like when you have that extra $3,000 or $5,000, you're like, oh, well we could get new equipment. We could, you know, update our studio. We could whatever. And then to give back is it's a choice and you have to make
Starting point is 00:16:48 that choice. And it's really hard. And I know this has like been something that you've done since the beginning in your company, even when your company was tiny. So how is that? And where do you give? And I know you donated like a zillion things in 2022. Tell me all about that. Cause I think it's so amazing. Well, thank you very much. And I really am so grateful for the Thrive Cosmetics community because it really is a mission and a movement that anybody can join. And it's the way that we've been able to build our philanthropy as much as we have has come from the community, not just from the obvious ways of them voting with their dollars and purchasing from us. Literally, we've been able to give to over 500 charities. And I'm very passionate about working
Starting point is 00:17:32 with grassroots organizations. Like when you talked about menstrual cups, I don't know enough about that. And I'm super excited to learn more about what you did there. But we work with an organization in Hawaii that's three sisters who started it. It's called My Movement. We wouldn't have known about My Movement. And they literally are providing feminine care products, menstrual products for all of Hawaii. So not only are you able to have access to it, it's also starting the conversation at a very young age in Hawaii at the public schools there. So sorry, I just have to mention my movement. But I think it's such a great example of our community coming together and saying, you know, we'll post on social, hey, what charities do you want us to give to? And that's
Starting point is 00:18:20 how it's grown. I started specifically giving to the cancer community. Then it grew into supporting domestic abuse. Strength United in California was the first, and we still love them so much. I met them through a makeup artist named Paige that I was working with. So the community has really, really helped build this movement. And it's so much bigger than what I ever would have dreamed of. The scholarships that we've been able to do, we partnered with University of Louisville and Breonna Taylor's family to do an endowment in honor of Breonna Taylor, who tragically lost her life, as we know. And Kaylin is now a Infinity Waterproof eyeshadow stick namesake. We name our products after inspiring people. And she was the first recipient
Starting point is 00:19:06 of the Breonna Taylor Scholarship. So it really has been so community powered. And it was really hard in the beginning. It was hard because I had no money. That was hard. So super obvious. It was hard to give. But it is what motivated me and inspired me in a way that I can't even put into words or quantify because I would get these letters from people saying, you know, the world needs something like this to exist. Please keep going. This helped me feel beautiful. I was going through chemo. And those types of messages and those people are what kept me going and still do like literally one of them sent me a bracelet that says keep going and I keep it here because it reminds me it just it just reminds me because it doesn't get easier. You just get better at
Starting point is 00:19:51 dealing with the challenges of the business. And there's peaks and valleys. There's peaks and valleys, by the way, you know what I mean? Like, I think that that's so, so important, because I literally in my 20s thought that Oprah didn't have problems. Like I was just like, oh, Oprah doesn't have problems. She's reached this like divine being state. That's not how it goes. It's that daily practice that I'm still learning. Over here at the Lady Gang, we are big, big fans of amazing brands that give back. That's right. Thrive Cosmetics is one of them. I've been a fan of theirs for many, many years. And I want to talk to you about something I love in their line of amazing products, the Brilliant Eye Brightener.
Starting point is 00:20:32 it's a highlighter stick made to brighten and open your eyes giving you an instant eye lift so you just apply it to the inner corner of your eyes to look like you've had plenty of restful sleep even if you haven't and let me tell you i am a sleepy sleepy mom and when i put this on my eyes boom i'm awake you can use it as an eyeshadow for perfect daytime glow or use the metallic shades for an easy smoky eye it has more than 10 000 five star reviews for a reason it even has a built-in sharpener win win win thrive cosmetics is amazing they're certified 100 vegan and cruelty-free beauty products made with clean skin loving ingredients plus cause is in the name for a reason a part of their mission every purchase supports organizations that help communities thrive such as those
Starting point is 00:21:10 battling domestic abuse homelessness cancer and more so you have to try thrive cosmetics to see for yourself right now you can get an exclusive 20 off your first order when you visit thrive cosmetics.com slash lady gang that's thrive cosmetics c-a-u-s-e-m-e-t-i-c-s.com slash Lady Gang for 20% off your first order. I know that you're now, since Thrive Cosmetics is so big, you're launching a sibling. You're having another baby, bigger than beauty skincare. And I love this. This is unisex. Can you tell us about that? Yes. So it's gender neutral. We developed it with plastic surgeons and dermatologists and again, really requested by our community. So one of my favorite products to talk about is our Bright Balance Cleanser, because I
Starting point is 00:21:55 love to brag about Bigger Than Beauty Skincare's team of people who created this dream formula. So we're really well known for our waterproof formulations, especially in the eye category. And the beautiful thing about waterproof formulas is that they don't come off. The challenging thing is how the hell am I going to get this off? They don't come off. And they don't come off for days. So how can we provide that to our consumers? So it was something that as the brand started to grow, they were demanding it. They're like, my waterproof eye makeup remover will not take this off without burning my eyes and my cleanser is burning my eyes.
Starting point is 00:22:33 And I also have really sensitive eyes, so selfishly, I really, really wanted this. And so Bright Balance Cleanser was something that I could not formulate on my own. We brought in the world's best dermatologists, plastic surgeons to talk to us about the innovation that was happening there and scientists. And then our team of super passionate product developers really brought this formulation to life. And so, you know, we really develop all of our products to solve problems. And when we say beauty with a purpose or products with purpose, it's like, you know, the world doesn't need another skincare brand. If we're going to be coming out with something, it really needs to be solving a problem. And so that's, you know, that's really what we were addressing there.
Starting point is 00:23:12 And the innovation that's happening in the skincare category constantly is so exciting to me. So we launched with 10 SKUs and 10 products, and it's a really tight assortment because we wanted to, we actually started with closer to 20. And then through our testing with our community and our customers, we decided, you know, that this was really the ideal setup. I'm sorry, what's that called? I actually like need to add that to cart.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Like that's exactly what I need because my eyes are so sore from like trying to get all this. It'll take your lash glue off. It will? Yeah. And a pro tip for using bright balance cleanser, when your skin, if you want to double cleanse with it, remove your makeup. And then when you're in the shower, shaving your legs or whatever, put on clean skin,
Starting point is 00:23:55 bright balance cleanser and the pineapple enzymes in it will give you a little mini facial, leave it on for three to five minutes. You can leave it on longer, but it will really help to brighten the skin. I love it so much. Okay. so um becca looks gorgeous right now jack and i are so beautiful all the time i want to ask you makeup artist question i want to take it back to the roots i have very small eyes and there's something when i get my makeup professionally done that they can zhuzh and like kind of make
Starting point is 00:24:29 them look bigger but when i use an eye product i'm always stuck with the tiny eye and i don't like to wear a lot of eyeliner. I'm more of like the stick kind of like, I don't know. So what is your secret for that? I got you because this is something that nearly 15 years into my makeup career, I am still learning. So never finished on this journey of makeup artistry and product development. So what you want to do is a lot of people think it's the eyeliner. A lot of people think that it's the mascara. It's actually not. Take Brilliant Eye Brightener or Infinity waterproof eyeshadow stick and use it just like you contour on your face. Use it to contour your eye. It's a little bit different on the eye though, where you, so a lot of times when we're
Starting point is 00:25:16 thinking about the contour shade or the crease shade, I think it's a little bit of false advertising. People just put it in the crease. And I wish people could see me on camera right now because what it, what you need to do is actually feel for your brow bone, not your upper brow bone but not that not the crease a little bit above yeah put it above and literally i'll just do it so you can see so i'm going i'm right underneath my brow bone right here and take it take brilliant eyebrow so and i should say a more of a deeper shade it's not this is not your highlight so i'm using peely right now to show you and you take it all the way up here then you can blend it out using your finger you can use one of those domed brush but
Starting point is 00:26:05 blend up and away and that's going to make your eyes like totally snatched like you can that's what makeup artists are doing so if i do that on the top am i bringing it from here or am i yes so i would looking at your eyes kelty what i would do is i would go from if i'm trying to make your eyes look bigger. I'm going to go from the two thirds inside. So like basically where your eye color is. So where your eye color starts on the inner corner of your eye. So go there and then you just draw underneath and go on your waterline. It's safe for your waterline. So go also go on your waterline and you're just going to give yourself a little bit of a a smudge it out, smoky, sexy under eye. But the key really is here up under it's it's like
Starting point is 00:27:00 right underneath your brow bone. I love you so much. I just want you to come to my house and play with me. I know you have a company to run, but this seems fun. That's so crazy. We've been told the crease for so long. We've been told all the wrong information. Yeah. If you have to have it like Kelty and I both have like heavier brows and it's like it does just make it more concaved when you're putting like dark shadow in the little caves of your eyes. I'm so excited because, um, Chris has sent us like a whole, I had some before, but sent us a whole box and I'm going to go literally try this as soon as we're done off this podcast. Like I can't wait. And I'm going to post the results. Um, I want to ask you one more thing cause we're out of time, but, um, you're launching
Starting point is 00:27:41 a podcast. Welcome to the podcast world. We can welcome you with open arms. Tell us about your show. Really? It's the, you know, it's the podcast I wish I would have had when I was starting thrive cosmetics and bigger than beauty skincare. I, I really, and I guess it was Thrive Cosmetics at the time. I have such, you know, I've made so many mistakes and I want to be able to share those mistakes. One thing about me is I'm a terrible bullshitter. I don't lie. Like I'm not, I can't, I'm like, I, I wear my heart on my sleeve and for good and for bad. And so I, you know, I talked to a lot of entrepreneurs that entrepreneurs at all different stages of their journey. And a lot of the questions are really similar. So I thought, well, what if I just made a 1-800 number and
Starting point is 00:28:24 people could just call and they could ask the questions and, you know, I can anonymize it. I also allow people to email them in. But the questions were, you know, there's so much shame that happens, I think, in life. But as an entrepreneur, we think that when we've made mistakes that we're going to be finished. And I'll never forget the first time, you know, I had to go through certain things like, you know, lawsuits or something that happened. And that's just the cost of, of being successful. And so I don't want other entrepreneurs. I got so many entrepreneurs reaching out to me. I just got, you know, my, this, you know, my first cease and desist letter. I'm totally freaking out. What do I do? And a lot of it's BS. It doesn't
