Here's Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Let's make this quick. hello hello hello and welcome to the lady and quickie i am becca here's jack here's kelty
Starting point is 00:01:27 hello and here is tommy lank it's a trash cast yeah it's a treasure pleasure pleasure by the way tommy is wearing the best shirt i've ever seen it's the b52s like 80s chic cosmic thing it says got it at buffalo exchange copyright 1989 oh my god that's the most 80s shirt i've ever seen in my life and i love this is the shirt i wanted in junior high and i never got it and then i've this b-52s was the first concert i ever went to as like way too old to be going to your first like big concert anyway it's such a nerdy thing to go to but then i saw this and i was selling clothes at buffalo exchange because i'm trash and i saw this hanging up on the wall for 40 and i'm like i won't take the cash back i will just
Starting point is 00:02:15 take that shirt no wait what other songs besides love shack rock lobster dare you i don't know b52 i'm not a connoisseur no what else rock lobsters them right yeah that was their first big hit what is it rock lobster yeah everybody had matching towels somebody went under a rock but it wasn't a rock. It was a rock lobster. It's a great music video. What's that song about? What's that song about? Drugs?
Starting point is 00:02:48 Oh. I don't know. It probably is about cocaine. It made sense if it was drugs. Why is there a rock under a lobster? Because the B-50s are very weird. They're new wave meets 60s old school astronaut cosmic. It's always like really random things and I love
Starting point is 00:03:04 them. You would know other songs from this Cosmic Thing album, which would be Rome, roam if you want to yeah there we go okay they're one of those bands that you know way more songs than you thought i hate those bands i know that's like toto toto has so many toto does have a lot of hits yeah and everybody only thinks it's africa well tommy we brought you here today to celebrate the launch the launch of the trash cast we are so excited you're part of the lady gang network i feel so loved i feel like the beautiful lady that i am you are you are beautiful i love a launch. It wasn't a soft launch. That's one
Starting point is 00:03:38 of my favorite words, by the way. We're having a soft launch. I feel like it's douchey restaurants. Soft launch just makes me think. When you know you're going to get bad service. But you have to have a soft launch. But doesn't it sound like your boner didn't get... Sounds like a half chub. It's not a full twerk. It's not.
Starting point is 00:03:54 No. But I was very excited. I was excited that Becca got her not one, but second Tommy Link look on your Instagram. It was a good look. That was a great choice, I have to say. Her look was costumey to begin with. Yeah, it was a little cowgirl-ish.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Oh, I thought it was very Xanadu. And Xanadu, yes. Very Olivia Newton-John. It was. With the high boot and the flowy pastel. I want to wear that dress again so badly. What did you wear it to? It was Lady Gang TV.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Oh. I want to wear it again. Here's why I chose it, is because I had this mint green shower curtain that I've been trying to use. And I don't know why I'm obsessed with that shower curtain. I just wanted to use it so bad, and then there it was. Is there anything worse, though, than a shower curtain? They're so fucking gross. Shower curtains are fucking disgusting.
Starting point is 00:04:44 A shower curtain in a hotel is the worst thing in the world. It's like cube magnet is what I call that. There's cum stains. They're not washing it off. I do like in a hotel when the shower curtain has that sort of like- Second shower curtain? It's a second shower curtain, plus it sort of swoops out. Oh, it's a, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:01 So it doesn't touch your body. An oval. but then it still does you still have to touch it and then you get the bacteria on you from other people's guests but what's worse what's worse shower curtain that you can toss throw away in the trash cast or uh or the um or one that you can wash or that stupid piece of glass that you have to use the the squeegee oh rather have glass glass the squeegee whoever do you really squeegee it you don't have to just get scrubbing bubbles and you get some you bought you get someone to come over and do that for you okay okay oprah okay kelty was just talking about what was the
Starting point is 00:05:39 first world stupid her like curtain oh her her she can do her phone her curtains her phone gross i hate you relatable i'm not relatable i've worked very hard to have my interactive curtain out see okay i cannot idiot i can't sleep in full darkness it freaks me out We were just talking about this. Okay, so I'm in Switzerland visiting a friend, and they have like Beauty and the Beast. They go out with the shutters like, good morning, Belle, and they close the shutters, right? So they all have those shutters if they're in an old school place, or if they're in a newish 70s building, they have these metal curtains like they live in a bodega, and they
Starting point is 00:06:17 put like the metal curtain down. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. It goes on the outside of the windows, and it's so quiet and dark, and I'm like, how do you get to the bathroom? Do you have a nightlight? Yes. Do you have any white noise? Do you have a fan I could turn on?
Starting point is 00:06:30 That's my nightmare. That's my hell. It was horrible. Dark, silent. I can't do it. I need a little bit of white noise and a fan going. I need a humidifier, a nightlight. I'm thinking about getting one of those weighted blankets.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I don't know. I have weighted blankets. Very, very comforting. Do you have trouble sleeping? Yeah, a little bit. Me too. But then once I'm asleep, I'm out. That's why I can't have the blackout curtains.
Starting point is 00:06:52 You'll never wake up. You'll sleep until three days later. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All right. When we come back, Tommy has launched his podcast and in his podcast episode gave a great question that I'm going to give back to him. That was a long hard launch in his hard launch. The Lady Gang. OK, so Tommy had Felicia Day.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Yes. On a recent podcast. And they got in this conversation that I loved. And you were talking about I don't really remember how you got on it. But you were saying, there's a part of the podcast where you said, who did I think I was? Like, what made me think I deserved? You guys were talking about being actors and, like, coming to L.A. And I was like, who did I think I was? Like, who did I think I was to deserve this lifestyle?
Starting point is 00:07:46 Take me back to little Tommy and, like, explain to me who did, like, who? Who did you think you were? Who did I think I was? Well, okay. I just thought, I guess in my mind in high school, when I was planning, you know, my career and what I'd be doing, I legit thought I was going to star as the lead. You thought you were Leo. I thought I was Leo, but I thought I was going to be the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Hell yeah. And I thought I was going to be Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. I had a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber hopes and ambitions. yes and i don't because i guess i thought oh when i grow up i'll turn into this tall sort of manly gorgeous man right not realizing like i'd already you peaked i peaked at 13 this is as good as it was gonna get you're like it's gonna be this more wrinkles and more gray i have people are gonna call me ma'am and that's cool i'm fine with that you guys people call my boyfriend ma'am sometimes and i get shocked my boyfriend's very stocky and very manly and he's been accidentally referred to
Starting point is 00:08:47 as a woman like three times recently is it from behind his long hair yeah i finally got six one very he's always wearing that shirling coat that like a woman with that haircut would wear it's true like in north dakota yeah but i just got to a place where i what if i what if that was not because back in the day i was so embarrassed and wildly offended by but i also did have sort of longish hair and looked very ladylike in high school but then i now i think about it like what if like we that's just because we villainize women and we think it's an insult and it's not and like you can call me ma'am you can call me sir i don't care just call me i did i already do that on the last podcast i think i said i'm not sure becca what makes you think you deserve it
Starting point is 00:09:30 i don't which is why i'm never working i actually here's the damn truth let's talk about it i'll read the text. Here's the damn truth. I, for some reason, how do I put this? Just going deep. I know, but like not too deep. At some point in my career, I don't know when it was when I got into it. I felt very deserving and very confident because I did. I worked really hard. um and then over time as like that career the business chips away at you and you're told so much how you're bad at most things and then you don't get so many things there does come a point where you're like it's too late to turn the car around i have no other skill or degree i'm headed in this direction i don't think that i'm worthy because otherwise someone would have
Starting point is 00:10:23 told me by now if i was i don't know so i i definitely don't feel deserving i look at myself and i'm like why on earth did you think that you like had any business pursuing this career however i did have business because broadway is very different as long as you have the skills and you're training yourself at it there's a place for you usually if you're talented enough Yeah. I mean, or they might look over you, but whatever. But then with TV and film, because I got, like, put into it without really striving for it, I think there's also a weird complex there, too, where, like, you get put on TV,
Starting point is 00:11:04 and then you're like, well, I wasn't even supposed to be at this party anyway. They're not going to invite me to another party. Yeah. But you had to be insane to even think, like, little Becca Tobin peeing in purses, like, I'm the shit. I'm moving to New York. I'm five years old. Like I'm going to, you have to be absolutely out of your mind to like have that much self-belief
Starting point is 00:11:23 to even make it in a city like New York. So it's crazy that now you're in LA and you've had a level of success that you can't seem to like believe in yourself the same way that you did back then when you had no reason to believe in yourself. I think it's easier when you're younger. I was going to say it is so much easier when you're younger. It's like when you're a kid and you go skiing, when you're like 10 years old, you don't realize that you can fall.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Like you don't understand that you can fail. So when you're younger, even 18, early 20s, I mean, I obviously wasn't in the entertainment industry, but I can assume that you think you can do anything and you don't realize that there's going to be all these failures and it's going to suck you in. And it's a form of insanity to continue doing what we're doing. Like the people who really succeed in this business, I find are the least aware, like self-aware, not in a bad way, but like they don't even know to doubt themselves because they're so wrapped up in their own delusion.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And it is a really entertaining thing at parties. But I also, like, don't want to be that person either. It's like you're supposed to pick up on cues around you. And when you go to 100 auditions and you get one, you're usually like, something here is not right. And it's probably me. Well, scientifically, I know your frontal lobes of your brain do not fully form until, like, 23, 25. Yeah. And so that's why when you're doing gymnastics as a kid or skiing, like you said, that part of your brain, that's why we do such stupid things as a teenager and take risks because that fear thing in your brain hasn't fully developed and logic hasn't fully set in in there.
Starting point is 00:12:56 So I think that's what it is. If you get involved in it when you're that age, you're like, I have no fear. I can do anything. And then as your brain fully starts to form, that's when the self-doubt comes in. What am I doing here? I should have listened in math class. Did I just mansplain? That was technically mansplaining, wasn't it?
Starting point is 00:13:11 No, it wasn't. No, it is interesting. I just read a – I remember reading a thing about it. Yeah, with your brain not fully developing. That's why we're such a moron. Well, then we're still morons. That's probably why I peaked at 23. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Because then your brain – now you're actually kind of smart and you're like, oh. Let me ask you this. I suck. As the final question of this quickie, is that what do you get out of – Doubting yourself? like that's it i know everyone like we love to like have a giggle at kelsey because i'm like who should be the host of entertainment tonight me who should be the president me like you know but like i guess my point is is that like it's either gonna happen or it's not but like if you
Starting point is 00:13:51 don't think it's gonna happen no one else it's not gonna well then like there's no chance you nobody's fighting for you you of all people should be and like i mean yes people are gonna make fun of you but you're not losing anything by being that person that's like i guess like what you said like crazy at parties that's like i know it's like an unfortunate narcissism and stuff but like that's kind of i don't know i don't think you know what the difference is but that's a personality trait too a beautiful personality trait i think it's great also those people take themselves very seriously it's i think it's hard when you have a sense of humor yeah and we'll self-deprecation too yeah yeah because you see those people and you're like yeah they're gonna keep failing
Starting point is 00:14:34 upwards because they're so serious about it they you know i don't know i just yeah i mean there's somebody right now that like how do i say this without being like too obvious i have seen so you look at the glee cast okay this is just an example the most talented people from that cast are not actually the ones working a lot. The people working a lot are the ones who didn't really ever second-guess their ability. Right. And it's not that they're not also talented. Sure.
Starting point is 00:15:08 There was a level of talent. There was a level of talent. Everybody was talented. Like, there's no doubt about it. But the most talented people were also, unfortunately, the most aware. And so they didn't come out, bust out on the scene once that show ended, being like, look at me, I'm amazing. some did and they are crushing it right but others were like i don't know i mean i got this show
Starting point is 00:15:32 because i like can sing and dance is that even going to translate to anything else fair questions yeah fair questions but then there were others that were like get me that golden glow well the thing is is that like i know that i am not the best at what i do like i'm good at what i do i'm like i was gonna say cheerio level glee i meant like that's not what i meant like i'm like i'm fine i'm not the greatest i'm not the goat but like i believe that i'm the goat and i tell everyone i walk around like i'm the goat and then people start to believe it but that's why you're fooled you fooled you fooled you because i don't even know how to pronounce words i i have the Grammar of a second grader.
Starting point is 00:16:17 This reminds me of some tea I need to spill. Okay, spill the tea. Okay. I'm at UCLA. I'm in college. My friend is- I went to UCLA. Yes, Bruins.
Starting point is 00:16:27 I was in Dykstra Dorm. My best friend at the time, Juan, was an RA up on the seventh floor above me. The resident next door to him was James Franco. And James Franco, Juan had sort of an open door policy, and I would go up there and do homework, and we would just hang out. I thought you were saying I went up there to do homo things Well that too, that's the first time I watched Ab Fab was in his room
Starting point is 00:16:50 What's Ab Fab? How dare you Wait, we have to watch this You will love this I keep pitching a podcast where we just watch episodes and talk about it Nobody's explained what it is Niche AF It's an Australian sitcom
Starting point is 00:17:06 It's British I thought they're Australian No, it's in London The reason I know about it is my Australian friends because they also loved it yeah they're british it's a it's they're basically you guys there i said it no they're crazy they're crazy delusional over the top like but elderly women okay i guess rude so you guys weren't that old though they were in their 40s they're in their 40s so rude so sad it's so old anyway sorry okay so i would be up there watching ab fab whatever
Starting point is 00:17:38 james franco would come in in just his boxer briefs nothing else just ripped just to papa gorgeous and we'd be sitting on the floor doing homework and he would hook his fingers into his boxer briefs showing off his cubic hair no his the the v or the you know gutters as they say whatever gutters i'm sorry you can bleep that uh he would come in and he would say one i want to be an actor like how do you become an actor like what what should i do i hate like you guys are theater people and what was he in school for at the time i think like english degree or something you're joking i don't know and we would be staring at him offended aroused spiteful and with a boner with a with a uh with a soft launch
Starting point is 00:18:31 She just spit out her water And we would say to him I don't know We're serious actors You have to go to an audition You have to take a class We're in Godspell right now We try it out
Starting point is 00:18:49 We go to auditions You can't just be an actor You can't just make up your mind And just be an actor Turns out, yes you can Just be really hot And you can just decide. Because if you can say words like a human, you can be an actor.
Starting point is 00:19:05 If you have gutters, you can be an actor. The moral of the story is be hot. We're not hot enough. Be hot and have dumb, blind, blind, what is that, blind confidence? Blind faith. The blind faith. You have to be a narcissist. How do I do it?
Starting point is 00:19:19 Is it a drug that I could take every day? What if there was like that limitless drug? Right? So not help my cause. What if there was, like, a drug, like, in Limitless where he could, like, unlock his brain and be amazing? Like, what if I could, like, lock up my self-awareness? It's called Prozac, and I'm on it. Me too.
