the lady gang the hollywood girl posse with lady gang quickie here's kelty knight becca tobin and
jack vanek let's make this quick hello hello hello welcome to the lady gang i am becca here with jack
and Kelty, I forgot to say it's a quickie, but that's because I have no brain cells left. This
is a quickie. Hi, everybody. We're so glad you've joined us. We have someone extra special with us
today. Kelty, take it away. Okay, so this is the craziest story. And the reason that I wanted to
have this lady on is she's been a friend of mine for over a decade. But this this show, if you
don't recognize her name, you soon will. And this show is all about resilience and getting over the
shock of when the rug in your life gets absolutely pulled out of your feet i want you to stay tuned
on that so um but our guest today has been my friend for on the front lines of entertainment
news for over a decade the former host of entertainment tonight canada she's a brand
new show yay because what happens when things get screwed you get your own show on tlc called
love and translation she's one of hello meg's 50 most beautiful people in canada she's the face of
CoverGirl Canada. Please welcome our friend Sangeeta Patel. Hi sweetheart. It's so good to
see you. First of all, Kelsey, how are you doing? I'm good. Healing up, healing up. So this, I want
to get to the show in a second, but I want to open with the resilience because the fact that you even
got out of bed today is wild. So I'm going to give the Coles notes and then I want to walk you to
walk through our ladies. We have so many women that like their job or whatever. Basically what
happened with you was you had been entertainment tonight Canada for so long like over a decade
and like on a random Thursday you guys get a zoom meeting and they're like the show's over
like your last show's tomorrow essentially after all that time so you're dealing with the loss of
your job your finances your mother your kids yeah that and then a cancer diagnosis like all in the
same time. Tell me the whole story. Where do I even start? And it's, it's, I don't even know
if I can swear, but that's exactly how I feel right now. It was a mind after me when this all
happened. You know, you always have an indication of something's about to happen. You always have
that feeling in your gut that something is approaching. And I was kind of preparing myself
mentally for it and it happened it was a call that i got an email actually i got first and it
was that terrible email you have a meeting tomorrow morning at 9 a.m and we're going to be talking
about the future of entertainment tonight canada and it said confidential and that's at eight
o'clock at night you get that email at night why and so of course i called my co-host and i was
like check your email what does it say and we knew things were going down so we did have the luck of
actually being told before everybody else and we were there in the morning we found out that that's
the end of a national show in Canada that's been around for 18 years and the hardest part for me
was going back to work right after I found out the information I'm like we're gonna go we're
gonna shoot the show we're gonna make this happen and it was the moment I was standing with everybody
in the office and you start looking around i'm like they're gonna find out tomorrow that they
don't have a job and that was probably the hardest part for me it wasn't about me at that point it
was about the young people who have joined they're excited to be here the producers everything and
that's when i broke down with that moment i felt okay i need to go to my office take a moment
before i go back to the studio and everyone noticed they're like you're not so happy what's
going on saying you know you're not yourself anymore and i said i love you guys that's all
i said in the studio remote they're like something's up and the next day everyone was told
and then we had one week before the show ended yeah that was the shocking part of it we thought
maybe give it a little bit of time let it breathe and say bye in a good way but fortunately on the
last show um we got to say bye to our audience and uh it was hard it wasn't easy you know when
you love something so much when you love your work and you're passionate about it and that's
taken away from you, it's a hard moment. That's really tough. Yeah. And it feels like, I mean,
TV is so unceremonious anyway, but it's like, I think about the people who, you know, when I left
ET, like I had watched 10 years of people leave the show and they get like the goodbye reel and
the, you know, and the like party and the cake and the, you know, whatever it was. And for you
guys like it happened so fast that it was like you didn't get to do the retrospective episodes
you didn't get to do the like celebration um becca when glee was ending did you guys know
like this is the final season you had the whole season to know yeah we knew the whole season
i think yeah yeah yeah because we had like an abbreviated season and we knew it was ending
but you know i saw something interesting on instagram of course that's all where we see
all the things now but it was neil patrick harris who has been in this business since he was a child
like doogie hauser and he's had this crazy like from the outside this ride that's just hit after
hit after hit after hit but he was talking about this advice that he was given as a kid in this
business and it was an older actor i think from the show and he said this business is surfing and
if you ever forget that you're you have to remember that there's so much paddling and waiting and
waiting and waiting your wave will come but you have to work your ass off before it does you ride
the wave, but inevitably in this business, every single wave crashes and then you're left at ground
zero and you got to paddle back. And it's just, it's like, we know this about the business,
but it never makes it any easier because it's a family. You, you bond with these people,
you get to know them so well. And it's like, it's just so unnatural to have to like have that wave
come to an end and say goodbye. And you grieve, like you truly grieve the end of an era.
Yeah, and I think that's part of it, too.
In 2023, it wasn't the greatest year for me.
My dad was sick, and then I was diagnosed with cancer, and it was just a little, you
know, I'm one of those people, you live that moment, you cry it out, you have that
moment, and then you wash your hands of it and go, you know what?
I'm in charge of my happiness.
Let me be happy.
So that's what I do.
Every time there's something negative, I find it, live with it, and then I come out
of it.
But 2023 taught me that it was difficult, especially with the cancer.
After that, it was more of I have two kids.
I have a family.
How do I move on?
How do I have this?
Same thing.
I tried the whole same technique, but I just fell into that loophole even more.
And I got into the sadness even more.
And I need to dig out of that.
And that is not the easiest thing to do.
And so what's the diagnosis?
Like, are you okay?
What are you doing?
Yeah. So I think I'm one of the healthiest people I know.
By the way, if you don't follow her on Instagram, this girl is like, oh my God, it's so fun. It's
muscles Tuesday. I'm going to do a plank with my husband and throw him into the pool. And here's
my 18 pack. Like when you, you are not the poster child for a cancer diagnosis. That's for sure.
That's it, right? I live a healthy life. And then I see a lump on my throat in the beginning of last
year and my co-host noticed it was growing so it went for an ultrasound and then I did a biopsy
which was benign you know I'm like I'm good I'm everything's good uh it just kept growing
excessively rapid it was just going and going and then I saw a specialist and he's like we need to
get that out he spent two hours with me he's like let's figure this out waited three weeks got the
results and thyroid cancer is very common it is something that a lot of women go through uh but
the type of cancer I had was a rare type of thyroid cancer of course I get the the winning
special one right the a-lister one and unfortunately it leaked into my blood
vessel and so now I'm dealing with an aftermath if this if I don't treat this that means the
cancer will come back in five years in my bones or my lungs and um the hardest part for me was
walking into the cancer center and meeting an oncologist and I just thought you know the surgery
is fine everything okay I gotta do this it wasn't until I went into the cancer center I'm like what
am I doing here yeah um I mean I just stood there I just walked into the door and I just stood there
and I looked around and uh and everyone's sick everyone's sick everyone's there to get better
um and then becoming a patient was the hardest part to say that I'm now a patient now I have
to go back every three months or six months. And I think that's really hard for mothers and women
in general to say, well, we're so resilient. But to say you're a patient is very difficult. And I
don't want that to be my identity, but it is going to be part of my life. And that's been, that
sucks. It really does suck. How does it change things with your husband? Is that wild?
Yeah. So my dad, my husband's in medicine. He's a doctor, he's a radiologist. And the moment
ladies when he read the report you get the report before the doctor talks to you about what's going
on um and it's the first my husband doesn't freak out he never reacts and he was sitting in his
chair and he does his hand movement where he's like this and i was standing behind him and this
calmness came over me because i knew he was freaking out and he never died and then he goes
let's go for a walk fine let's go for a walk and just walked very quietly and he was just holding
my hand and uh yeah and we haven't really talked about it though I don't think we've really like
gone there yet to feel his emotions yet and I think I do need to take care of him a little bit
but I don't know if I'm ready for it you got to put your own oxygen mask on first oh yeah right
you know what I mean and you're lucky because he knows what's up so he's not gonna bad you with
questions and whatever he knows exactly you know that's kind of like I guess a good a good side of
it so what do you do what do you do to get yourself we see so much in the lady gang women
writing in and being like i can't get out of bed i my marriage is falling apart i lost my job i
i am not in a good place health-wise i you know and you're like at your your desperation station
and what do i do how do i get out of this so you have lost you know that this new tlc show is on
the horizon. So you have one shiny star over here and stage left, but you have all this other stuff
you're dealing with and you are a very positive person, but how do you, what were your tools
that you could share with other women? Like how to get the out of bed? I know sometimes you do
need to be in bed. Yeah. Sometimes you do need to let, like I said earlier, I let myself live in
that low, let yourself beat it, let yourself cry, do that ugly cry, do whatever you have to do to
get that moment, but don't stay in it. I give myself a time limit. I let it be. Whatever it
is, I'm sitting in the corner, I'm going for a walk, whatever it is, I take the time to feel it.
And then I don't let it be me. So I walk away with it, feeling the positive. And it's really
a mind switch. I have this switch in my head where I just kind of like, all right, thank you. That's
it. Get out of it. And it's really helped me. And what that does is that comes from the ambition
you have and the hustle you have. And I called Kelsey, you know, we got on the phone. I'm like,
what's next? And in this business, as you guys know, things are kind of not as great as it was
four years ago. If I lost my job four years ago, I'm like, okay, I'm good.
You know, there's another job. Yeah. Yeah. You're good. Now in 2024, that's not the case.
And he's like, Hey, do you know? And I was like, well, six people got fired today and, uh, three
shows are getting canceled like there's we're not in a good place in our business at all so
even when the good people even when you've been the host the number one on the call sheet you know
and um you know beck i know you've experienced this in the same way like you have these sorry
jack your jack's auditions have been fine um all successful she's gotten every job she's ever
applied for four to zero old navy don't forget yeah but um but you know it's like it's not a
good time to have your life blow up and no and to feel uncomfortable for sure so when we come back
i want to talk about the comfort blanket of the new show because thank god

the lady gang so we're back with sangeeta so the show you've known about but you guys had
already filmed it before life blew up you were gonna be doing both yeah that was the plan right
that was the plan yeah so it was one of those situations where you know uh i don't know how
it works in american television but when you take a show idea to the people you work with they
usually say no to you and that's what i got i gotta know saying you can't do both shows like
you got to commit to this. And I fought for it. I went into that room and I go, well,
you know what? I need to decide what I want to do next. Is this the next step for me? Do I go
to the American market? Do I? And he was surprised that I came into the room and he goes, okay,
well, let's figure this out. I was like, yes, I finally did something that's for myself. I spoke
up for myself. It felt so good. Of course, you're like peeing in your pants, walking into that room
thinking, oh my God, I'm going to lose my job or what am I doing? And it was the greatest feeling
because one of the things I've learned, we're very good at advocating for other people. But
when it comes for ourselves to walk into a room like that, we're not very good. We don't know
our value. And that was the moment I'm like, yeah, I'm putting my shoulder back. I know what
I'm doing. Right. And it was the best decision I ever did. So the idea of doing that and doing
ET Canada was so great. And the concept of the show is so fun because I tell us all about the
show yeah yeah so i used to be an engineer so the idea that they're doing the social experiment i
was like i want to see if this actually is successful and so we went down to dominican
republic and we shot this show and the concept is can you fall in love without the use of language
and so i did a lot of love and translation love and translation it's on tlc it's it's airing right
now it's airing right now and so the question to you guys you know 80 of our communication is
nonverbal so I really want people to think about the way they communicate I mean are you more about
touch are you more about your the way your your tone or the way you look at people and one of the
challenges was to look into someone's eyes for two minutes straight and gaze into their eyes and
actually see into their souls and it's really interesting to watch certain people do it and
one of them just started crying because they felt that connection or they were reading each other's
story i don't know what it was but you know this is what we have to think about is the way we are
every day with people and i think that really resonates in this uh the show love and translation
now are they allowed to talk to each other at all like can they try to communicate or is it just like
no words like maybe like el cafe that's what's so funny about the show is that they are they're like
using like they're like miming a lot yeah they're miming a lot and we have translators so i can
understand the girls so the girls can understand amongst themselves but the guys don't have the
translator so they have to figure out how they're going to communicate with the girls and then later
in the show i give them the translators to finally connect when once they pick up two girls or so
um but it is really interesting to see how the guys would dance or they would slow down their
words i'm like it's the same word it's slowing you down doesn't help uh but you know they would
do whatever they have to connect with these girls and so i put them through all these experiments
to see if they actually can make connections.
And I actually tried one of them with my husband.
He's like, what are you doing?
He's like, I'm not into this.
But, you know, that's the fun of it.
It's a great show.
I laughed out loud.
Sorry, Jack.
I know, God.
I laughed out loud when in the beginning,
one of the girls was like,
I just, I really want to be with an American man
because they're such gentlemen.
And I was like, what the?
Excuse me?
Are we living on the same planet?
Like these women aren't American men. Nice. Um, no.
The biggest boys on the planet.
And one of them does call a guy a boy. And I'm like, they know that word.
Um, but I was like, God, they really,
these women and they all like specifically want to meet an American man.
And I'm like, wow. Amazing.
Yeah. I guess apparently they're supposed to be handsome and just treat women
really well. And you should have used some Canadian men.
yeah Canadian men the other thing is like the women's cultural right experiences too like this
woman is from Japan hugging or kissing or looking at each other is not it's considered disrespectful
yeah oh yeah he had to adjust to that right she had to learn like okay maybe I do need to do this
but she was really uncomfortable with it um but she goes for it and then the girls were asking me
like how long you've been married for 20 years like how do you do it like how do you make this
all happen and so that was also interesting to see that they were like oh that's how our
relationship works which I found really fascinating I do think it's so interesting because if you
think about like when I think about a reading Harry um not Harry Styles Harry Prince Harry's
book and then the stories of Meghan Markle when she was like I offended everyone because I like
went around and tried to hug people because like yeah you know you're on set and you're just like
oh my god hi like I hugged Meghan Trainor's PA yesterday at work I'm like I've never met you
willow but bye you know like i don't but it's like how those physical things you can be the
nicest person in the world in your words but i do think this is such an interesting social
experiment because oh my god megan markle this california american girl hugging kate middleton
was so offensive and you're like it's a hug what the hell you know yeah i love it i love it i just
have a question. Like, so as being a host, this is my dream, like to host a dating reality show,
because like, that's the only thing I watch other than true crime documentaries. Um, it's the only
way I would be on TV again. Um, but as a host, like, are you're like kind of integrated in
things like, you know, what's going on. Cause I always wonder about that. Like how much do you
actually know about what's happening? Um, with everything that like with all the couples and
stuff like that. That's a really good question because once I finished shooting, they would
send me back they said I can't stay they don't want me to know what's happening and I was like
why not in the morning they'll give me a little briefing but they won't say it and I'm like why
aren't you telling just help me a little bit more as a host yeah and I understood afterwards because
I do sit down with six of the girls at the end and there's an IV in my ear and they're feeding me
information of what's what happened and so they would be like ask her why she slept with them
that night when he found out this and ask him what what he does you know what so I didn't know
anything like this was happening I didn't know he slept with her I didn't know they were fine I mean
it just made really good television because I'm freaking out and I'm asking them with the
vulnerable state of finding out what just happened so right that's the reason they do it but I was
like I want to stay for the whole thing I want to know what's going on and which who's fighting and
who's happy and who's not but uh it was you know it was a real reality television show now uh you
filmed this a bit ago so since then have any of the couples that have you know come together
are they each learning each other's language like how what's what happens next yes i can't tell you
who are together yet okay but let's just say it was successful a successful experiment
yeah to learn each other's language oh wait okay cool i love it i can't say anything
well that's good that's good that's enough to tune in that's enough to tune in and everybody
is so beautiful which i really appreciate because i like beautiful people on my tv it's very important
so thank you they're all exactly um well we adore you and you've been so supportive of us over the
