Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys, it's your Lady Gang, Jack Vanek, Kelty Knight, and Becca Tobin. Thank you so much for subscribing on iTunes, and thanks for supporting the great sponsors who make it possible for us to have this much fun with you every single week for free. Well, what is this? Welcome to the Lady Gang. That's amazing. Say that again. The Lady Gang. Things are about to change around here.
Starting point is 00:00:22 Each week we catch up with Hollywood's hottest girl posse, Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek. Hello, hello, hello and welcome to the Lady Gang. I am Becca Tobin here with Jack Manick and Kelty Knight. I just housed some Doritos and some Fig Newtons. Oh my god, oh my god. It's here. What? She's... I'm like, what is happening right now? I understand. The guest. Yes, the guest. Guys, this is Kelty in the rarest form you'll ever see her in.
Starting point is 00:00:52 She's... She is... Fun. Fun, but I don't want to waste any time. Let's get to it. Gotta get right into it. Time for Good Week. Yes, it is. Bad Week.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Oh, no. I want to go first. Yeah. Okay. First of all, Good Week. Matt Nathanson is here, my number one favorite singer. And in honor of him, I've been listening to Matt Nathanson all day. Yay.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Bad Week. Great Good Week. I have a mystery pumpkin problem. You guys? That seems weird. I don't know what that even means. Only two weeks since October, I get home to my house, and someone has placed a pumpkin on my driveway. How is this the first we're hearing of this?
Starting point is 00:01:33 Above. This is amazing. Because I didn't realize. I thought it was just the neighbor being nice. Sometimes on top of my post box. Sometimes on my front door. There's just a pumpkin. You have cameras.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Well, I know. So then I went. Wait, wait, wait. Is it the same pumpkin that you keep moving? No, different pumpkins. How big? Like a mini pumpkin? Like a, you know, not a huge, like, I'm going to win the thing.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Just a small, like a pumpkin. This is so weird. And I'm like, so I say to Chris, I'm like, should we be worried? Like, is this someone tagging our house? Like, they go and put the pumpkin in front of your house to see if you're out of town. To see if you're out of town if you move the pumpkin. Or just, like, give a sign to their, like, partner that, like, it's a good house to, like, break into. Right.
Starting point is 00:02:07 It doesn't seem subtle enough. I know. I'm like, just tag me with, like, a big. A massive pumpkin with a sign being like, I'm watching you. I don't know. Anyway, so the pumpkin. So then I'm like, you know what? I got to go looking for the pumpkin footage.
Starting point is 00:02:18 So I go on my Ring app and I'm looking. And so then there's a video and I'm like, oh, there's the pumpkin. It rolls down the hill, rolls into my driveway and just rolls. So whoever put the pumpkin rolled it from out of reach of my camera. You're joking. I am not joking. But then how do they get it in places like on top of your... Well, clearly they put it...
Starting point is 00:02:39 Wait, so people are just rolling pumpkins down your street? I don't know. Well, like a pumpkin just gave me an alert and I was like, oh, I wonder what it is. Could it be the mail truck? Could it be whatever? it's just a pumpkin just rolling down to mark my spot you're being tortured you're being tormented what is happening you gotta look up what is like maybe it's a thing symbolic it might be a thing that people are doing i'm looking it up right now okay jack you go okay mystery pumpkin could it
Starting point is 00:03:06 mean put it on the first degree the disappearance of the pumpkin okay so my good week is um our friend becca tilly over at scrubbing and podcast did like an ask me anything the other day and people were just asking her remember when you guys made fun of me for doing an ask me anything okay anyway bye no not an ask me well it was like on instagram where i was like ask me questions and then she'll post the answers of it sorry and somebody had like asked her about botox and filler and she was very open and honest about what she has gotten done to her face i actually saw that and i was very impressed because as we have said a million times everybody in hollywood is getting shit done to their faces and everybody pretends that they don't what was the thing that
Starting point is 00:03:47 we wanted to do that they wouldn't let us do on our tv show how we wrapped up every show like the girl yes girl oh yeah yes girl yes girl yes girl we could do it on the podcast yeah i know we could that's our yes girl yeah becca tilly yes girl you know what i love it honesty is great because she's beautiful too and it's like there's a lot of girls out there who want to look like her Yeah. I mean, not that, like, Botox and filler, like, made her face because she's already pretty. Yeah, but I appreciate the honesty because it's very rare. That is so nice. Yeah, I really liked it.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Okay. Bad week is, oh, my bad week is fast. I just found out that there is a, like, four-year-old child on YouTube that makes $22 million opening gifts. Yes. I recently heard about some kid making $7 million talking about toys, so. Like, what the f*** are we doing with our lives when there is a child that is making... I hope he's saving his money. 200 times more than I ever make.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Listen, first of all, you're going to get murdered. When you turn nine, you're murdered. Mom takes all the money. I mean, this is like a JonBenet. Wait, this totally rolls into my good week, bad week. Oh, good. I don't know if you guys were with me because I have a really bad memory when people tell me things. So recently someone told me they were on an airplane, commercial flight,
Starting point is 00:05:02 and they recognized a child instagram star like a young kid i'm not gonna say her name okay she's a young girl and her mother has made her very famous she's very cute jojo no younger this is not the jojo siwa podcast no she's younger and um she's these people like a family there's like a couple of them right it's they have a few kids but like the one little girl like the star star well this family was on a flight in coach the kids were all in coach and the mom was in first class yeah that's what i'm saying that's what you're saying don't turn 11 and get braces kids because your career's over and your mom's gonna murder listen this woman is probably gonna try to be like oh but we that's how we flew before the kids were famous we don't want to like we
Starting point is 00:05:51 don't touch their money it's our money it's like girlfriend you were not flying first class before your daughter became famous on instagram that was the most like messed up story i wanted to cry yeah me too like who's looking out for these children no one it's us we should adopt them and we'll take 10 and like wasn't it something like they had they were going for an event so the older sister was like watching them and coach and they had fallen asleep and like left him on the airplane well they were like not being taken care of and coach and there was all kids back there there was no adult supervision no mom was just up having her like most like exploitive thing i've ever heard it's horrible and i'm pretty sure they were like coming from an event that the kids
Starting point is 00:06:29 were having to appear at yes you're welcome parents disgusting the dicks okay here's my good week so this is a little delayed because i forgot to talk about it but um i was at home and i got a delivery from Postmates and I did not order a delivery from Postmates and I'm like listen I have been a frequent flyer lately I've been really really lazy and I've been getting a lot so I'm like oh it's and I like look out the window I'm like hey and this girl's like holding a McDonald's bag she's like it's Postmates and I was like I didn't order and she goes it's actually a gift whoa and I was like okay and I like was too flustered to ask her well you know I chowed down immediately on the two large fries that came off then i thought they're mcdonald's fries i
Starting point is 00:07:13 thought maybe it was a gift from postmates because like i've been ordering so much they're just like i bet she's home yeah she's always home and she's always ordering food at this time yeah so then i'm like chowing down on these fries texting pretty much everyone i know being like texted me i texted her i was like did you send me french fries she's like no and then five minutes later another guy shows up with an Astro Burger bag and I'm like what is happening he's like hey delivery it's a gift and he like leaves it with me and I'm like can you tell me it's who it's from he's like I can't so I'm like is it is it from Postmates and he's like yeah it's from Postmates and I'm like you're not understanding what my question is but then I open the bag and I'm like it's my order
Starting point is 00:07:54 it's my order from freaking Astro Burger and remember when we talked about our favorite fast food the veggie burger from astro burger with mcdonald's fries yeah well my manager did it oh isn't that nice did he know you were home i think so because we had talked earlier and he was like i mean it's for fast food like it's okay if you hadn't been home like and missed it like it's not like he broke the bank that's a cute thoughtful granted it was probably 70 because it's so expensive to do postmates but like isn't that nice he did actually reach out to me prior Oh, he did? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Did he? And he was like, Becca's orders Astro Burger, right? And I was like, correct. And he was like, okay. Was this for anything specific or just like a rainy day? It was the day before my birthday. That's why it's a little delayed. So it was like a birthday thing.
Starting point is 00:08:41 That's cute. That is a great birthday gift. Great gift. Don't have to see the person. Yeah. It's food. I don't want flowers. No.
Starting point is 00:08:48 Send me a goddamn milkshake. Yes. French fries, please. It was great. And also, it's like Ricky's proving that he's listening to the podcast. Yeah. Good job, Rick. You can have your money, which is 50 cents.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Yeah. Okay. When we come back. Now back to the Lady Gang. Our guest today is my celebrity crush. With a brand new record, Sings His Sad Heart, my longtime life soundtrack is sitting right here in front of me to bring all his beautiful lyrics to life and possibly sing for us. He got his start as the hot kind of nerdy guy at parties who sat down and played Crash by Dave Matthews Band and then got laid. His multiplayer smash, Come On, Get Higher, is constantly playing in every home goods in the country, probably right now.
Starting point is 00:09:37 And his best song, Little Victories, was not only featured on the TV show Scrubs, but was also my wedding song and is now a tattoo on my wrist. This is getting creepy. He's performed on Ellen, Letterman, and The Bachelor, and his new album features some of my favorite songs of all time, including Used to Be and Mine. I think he's the greatest songwriter on the planet, and at one point in my life, I was definitely trying to marry him. Lucky for him, it didn't work out.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Please welcome to the Lady Gang, Matt Nathanson. Oh, my God. Best intro ever. That was so badass. Did you love it? It even made me sound like I got laid. First of all, I focused on that. I was like, that's a good myth.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And then every – you were the best. There's no way you weren't the nerdy person playing Crash by Dave Matthews at the party. So I'm about 100 years older than that. So I was definitely the nerdy guy playing like Indigo Girls songs. Oh, my God. It is. It's even better. And definitely not getting laid.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Like definitely just kind of being every woman or every girl at that point's best friend. I was totally the Dawson. Friend zone. Yeah, I was like straight up 1,000 percent. Like I maybe got to like make out with my best friend and then it was kind of like the next day. And then she was like, I'll go for the asshole. I got the, you know what? Like, I think that, like, our friendship is going to be hurt by this.
Starting point is 00:10:52 And I was like, it's okay. Like, let's hurt the friendship. And she was like, no, no. I think we should really be friends. And I was like, oh. Did you buy that then? You know what? I was just, yeah, I guess I was like, maybe.
Starting point is 00:11:04 It wasn't like, oh, she's missing out. I was like, well, I guess she saw the real me. That was totally how it went. But here's one, here's something even crazier. So my two best friends, one was a girl and one was a boy in high school. And I roomed with the boy. I went to boarding school from the time I was a really young kid. And I was such a sabotager of my own joy that, like, I convinced the girl that this boy who she didn't even like was awesome.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And then they started dating. Oh, no. What? We both kind of loved this girl. But I was friends with her. And then I totally, like, told her, like, he's the best. Like, you've got to get to know him. She's like, I don't like him.
Starting point is 00:11:41 And I'm like, no, he's the best. And then they started dating. And then I was like, wah, wah, wah. You're so masochistic. Dude, the worst. And then I might as well have like bamboo under my fingernails that bad. And then like for real, they broke up because it didn't work. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And who got them back together? No, you didn't. Oh, yeah. Straight up. A second time. Straight up was just like, no, you don't get it. And then they started dating again. You're perfect for each other inside.
Starting point is 00:12:04 You're like, I love you. The worst. Like I honestly, it couldn't have been like sitting on tacks or like sticking things under my fingernails would have been less painful than what I did to myself. Jesus. That's so sad. Oh, my God. That's so sad.
Starting point is 00:12:16 I'm a good friend to have. You are. I've since developed into quite a terrible wing person. Oh, yes. I'm not the person you want in your – like if you're a guy and you're like, hey, let's go. Even though I'm married and I don't want anything to do with any of it, I totally sabotage the other person. Really? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:34 I just do. It's just my thing. Maybe from like years of sabotaging yourself as a kid, you're like getting back at yourself. Spreading the wealth around. You're like some for me now that I'm 87. Yeah, yeah, yeah. At 106, I'm ready. I'm ready to take it on.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Ready to take your girl. So you have a brand new record out. Yes. Which I just love. You know, there's only one person that I buy records and the CD. Wait, you bought the CD physical? I not only bought it. I don't even know they made CDs anymore.
Starting point is 00:13:02 I bought it on iTunes because I wanted to help him chart. Then I buy the CD. Then I buy the vinyl bundle. I got two patches for my jean jacket and a Matt Nathanson t-shirt for tour in 2014, which I didn't go to. Why? What were you doing? He's just trying to get rid of his old merch. And I'm like, I support it.
Starting point is 00:13:19 You gave it to the 2014 t-shirt? So we sell like a – we'd be like, hey, we've got a couple things left in the store like for five bucks. It's like a crab bag. Yeah. I used to do that. Take a shirt and it's like – I'm some idiot. I love it.
Starting point is 00:13:30 I'm willing to buy it. Dude, so awesome. And she's the greatest. Like, I run things by Kelty at this point in our relationship where I'll be like, can I send you a song and, like, get your feedback on it? And she totally – it's the greatest. She's – I mean, she – here's the thing. I'm really happy that you're here and you're validating this because sometimes when she talks about you and says things along those lines, like, he sent me this song. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I'm like, is this in her head? Well, it's also, like, how she thinks – Like the Canadian girlfriend I had. What? Oh, that's what my brother thought. I was like, dude, I'm dating this girl when I was, like, in sixth grade. We're kind of talking on the phone a lot. And he'd be like, I think she's not real.
Starting point is 00:14:05 That's what it felt like with you. I was like, did he send it to you or did he send out something to his fan club? Yeah, send me an email. Well, it's the same thing that she thinks she's besties with Ariana Grande. So she DMs her, but it doesn't go really both ways. Right. Listen, but Ariana has nothing on you. Dude, I woke up this morning and I thought that exact same thing.
Starting point is 00:14:28 I was like, you know what? Ariana has a couple things going on. Nothing on me. She's got nothing on Matt Nathanson. No. I said myself in third person. I was like, she's got nothing on Matt Nathanson. That's when you know that somebody's super sane is when they talk in third person.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Totally. It's awesome. Before we get into the lyrics, I did want to talk about the record, but we're going to talk about that in a second. Wait, I have one question. Yes. Which episode of The Bachelor did you perform on?
Starting point is 00:14:50 I was on two different ones. Oh. So there was some Tanner and Jade got married. Yeah. From Paradise. Yes. You played at their wedding? I played their wedding.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Oh. Whoa. And then I was on one where we played – it was on a date in City Hall in San Francisco and we played on the stairs to them while they came in like to the date. So it was a different season, different group. I also played in another Bachelor contestant's wedding. Yeah, me. So cool. Isn't that awesome?
Starting point is 00:15:19 And I didn't hesitate for a minute when Christina was like, dude, can you – I mean – This is such a good story and I want to tell it because the back story that a lot of people don't know. Everyone knows that Christina surprised me with Matt Nathanson. What they don't know is that Chris was trying to book Matt Nathanson for like seven months before the wedding and could not get you booked because Christina had already booked you. He had a conflict. He had a conflict. Yes, I had a conflict at your wedding. Hey, okay, Megan.
Starting point is 00:15:46 Chris never got the memo that I was already booked? No, no, no. Christina told no one. No one knew. It was super secretive. And I didn't have a wedding party, so there was like no – so no one knew. So Christina, the plan was, is that I'm going to walk into a thousand years, we're going to get married and then I didn't want a traditional wedding.
Starting point is 00:16:02 So we're going to walk down the stairs. We're going to do like half of her song. Um, oh my God, I can't remember what song it was now that we pick our arms, this song called arms. And she was going to do half of it and we're going to like dance so that we can get the picture and then we're out. And so I walk into a thousand years, we get married, I walk down and Christina's like, by the way i'm supposed to sing right now but kelty described this wedding and like everything
Starting point is 00:16:26 is the same it's like the flowers her dress the flowers in her hair we couldn't have imagined how great chris would be but like someone's missing and she's like matt nathanson and he walks in and it's in the back of this house he walks in by the pool with a guitar and he's like hey and in that moment chris's face is like oh my god and he's also i think chris was probably like oh this is my new wife celebrity crush so this is up and then second of all like i didn't know he didn't tell me till after the wedding like in the back of his mind he was like i really wanted to surprise a thousand percent i'd be like who the hell did this to me amazing so anyway so when did like you you flew all the way from san francisco no i flew from somewhere else i think
Starting point is 00:17:09 i was on tour doing something and i had a day off and christina was like do you mind doing this and And I was like, no, for Kelty, I'll totally do it. Did she pay you? No. What? Oh, this whole time I thought she paid you. No, she definitely bought the plane ticket. She bought the plane ticket?
Starting point is 00:17:24 Yeah, which was super rad. That's very nice. That's so nice. Of course. Yeah, no, I felt like I would have been, like, it was just so easy to do it. And I'm not saying that like, but it was totally like, of course, that sounds rad. Do you get asked to play a lot of people's weddings and stuff? I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:17:37 Yeah, there's one song I have that's about my almost divorce that people want. Well, that's about, yeah, I got a lot of songs about almost divorce. But this one was Wedding Dress is what it's called. Everybody's like, will you play Wedding Dress at my wedding? And I'm like, will you pay attention to the lyrics before you ask that? For real. They're like, it's like in your wedding dress to have and to hold. Even at my best, I want to let go.
Starting point is 00:18:00 And people are like, I really want to walk down the aisle of that. This shows how dumb people are. Well, people really like, I call it simple. Like people really just want to, they usually see it through their own lens. And so they interpret something that seemingly to us would be like, hey, this kid's about to get divorced. They're like, hey, it sounds like he's so happy. Do you know what I mean? So it's like their own trip.
Starting point is 00:18:21 And so, yeah. So anyway, but that happens probably once a month. Someone will be like, hey, we walked down the aisle to a wedding dress. And I'll be like, that's an omen. Like you got to get that. Stop saying that. You're a terrible businessman. I feel bad.
Starting point is 00:18:33 No, you need to write a new song about weddings. That's what I'll do. $17 million and I shall come. Imagine. I'll show up and I'll ruin a dark cloud over your beautiful day. See, that's the difference between you and I. I'd be like, sure. I need you in my corner.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Listen, tell him to call me. I'll be like, wedding dress, beautiful choice. Yes, incredible. And then we hang that at my wedding. And then we just watch from afar as everything crashes and burns. Just things falling. Just drinking a martini. That's false.
Starting point is 00:19:00 All right. So I have a special surprise for you, Matt Nathanson. And mostly Jack and Becca because this is great. I am just terrified. So, everyone makes fun of me because I'm a massive journaler. I journal every moment of my life. I do every morning, by the way. But you're a songwriter.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Yeah, that's your job. So, I have found the journal. This is literally what Kelty does instead of, like, have friends. I love it. Your journals are meticulous because you post them sometimes in the world, and I'll be like, Jesus. So, the embarrassing thing is that this was in 2010, so that's not that long ago. It was not long ago. Eight years, nine years ago.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Not long enough. not long enough let's remind everybody kelty is 36 years old yes do the math okay so this is just a quick journal she's almost 30 i'm gonna throw that out there when she wrote that so i'm gonna read a journal entry that i found i knew it existed i think i had posted on a blog many many years ago so i don't know if you've heard this you might have read i don't know i definitely didn't okay so the title of this uh entry is called the day i almost met math nathanson it's april something i'm at lax flying to edmonton nothing special i'm always at lax i almost live here i'm wearing what i always wear leggings brown boots scarf yellow cardigan but
Starting point is 00:20:12 today i magically wore my one special feather earring i thought this morning as i got dressed should i wear my magical feather i might lose it there's no reason to look cute it's lax and on the other end of this plane ride is my mom she has to love me even if i'm ugly But something, also known as the ghost of Matt Nathanson, whispered in my ear, wear the earring. The ghost? Is he dead? And just like that, my luggage, tiny feather, and I were off to LAX. Well, at LAX, I had a conversation with my bestie Katie about how last night I was on a date. And right up front, Stiles, I told the date, there's something you need to know.
Starting point is 00:20:50 If I choose to be in a relationship with you, which is not going to happen, dud, I have an out. I need an out. If I ever get the chance to have an epic stay-up-all-night-playing-Portus-head-smelling-like-fresh-showers-makeout-session-with-Matt-Nathan-Sinn, no matter what, I need to be able to do that. And I needed to be able to do that. He didn't think that was a good idea, hence why he's not my dream man. Wait, where did the almost-meeting-him-come-from-in-your-mind figure that? Hold on. I'm taking it.
Starting point is 00:21:20 It's the greatest. He said, if you're going to do it, do it now. Touche. fast forward back to LAX today back to my extra special feather earring so I'm sitting at the gate and I'm checking Twitter and golly gee Matt Nathanson has tweeted and he tweeted that he
Starting point is 00:21:35 was at LAX my heart started to race I grabbed my chapstick I was thankful I had been on team feather earring in typical Kelty manner I tweeted at him three times and I stood I stood right beside security hoping he would walk by I had a fever
Starting point is 00:21:51 and a cold sweat a female boner Matt didn't walk by. But if he did, I know he would have fallen madly in love with me, my sparkling personality and my feather. Sadly, as I stood in line to be the very last person to board the plane just in case he walked by, he didn't. But as I sat down in lonely seat 23A, I checked my Twitter. Obviously, it had been almost 11 minutes, and there it was. At Matt Nathanson, direct message. Where you at, JetBlue?
Starting point is 00:22:22 It was not in a where you at, like, let's bone. No, no, no. It wasn't like, you up? Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's up, girl? No, it was like a, hey, fan that I've met before. Where you at? The way you said it, it sounded so...
Starting point is 00:22:35 Where you at? Bathroom? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Quickie? Let's play slap and tickle. This happened. I would have met Matt today, and he would have told me how beautiful I was and how charming my tweets are, and then we would have talked about his wife and how they split up.
Starting point is 00:22:50 No hard feelings. she decided to move to india and be a guru and that he had fallen instantly in love with me and that we would make out for most likely three to seven hours when we took breaks he would tell me he never wanted to be apart from me or my feather ever again the end oh my god wait kelty where would i have read that number one number two that's incredible i mean you need to print You need to give him a copy of this. Yeah. You are fearless.
Starting point is 00:23:21 The best part. Because I read it out loud or I wrote it in my journal. Well, because you read it out loud, but also because you're like, you manifest shit. Yeah. And like. Now we're here. And now we're here. But like, it's, that's some real commitment.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I was going to say dark. I'm like, you really went the positive route. Actually, Kelsey, I don't think I've ever loved you more. That is. I really don't. I mean, I'm so. I mean, I'm speechless, but my favorite part of this. Is you wrote this for only yourself.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Like this was for you. And that's not true. This is me and Spaghetti's journal. So my journal that I pass back and forth with my best friend. Oh, so this is a letter to him. This is a story I'm sharing. What did he say about it? Who's Spaghetti?
Starting point is 00:24:01 She has a childhood best friend and they mail each other still. Like this is decades. They write each other letters. Can I have a Spaghetti question? Yeah. You think he's straight or gay? He's straight. He's married.
Starting point is 00:24:13 He's straight and he's married and he's your best friend. Mm-hmm. okay okay well that's yeah there's a lot there we've like a brother we've known each other since we're five we're not talking about this isn't that don't waste this precious sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry we'll talk about it another time but so i'm easily my favorite podcast of okay again almost 30 years old writing like this like a crazed super fan that would get a restraining order against them probably but here's here's the thing and i will say this i am flat i'm beyond i don't know if there's a word beyond flattered that i could use scared
Starting point is 00:24:43 but let me just tell you this no there's a reason restraining there's some i just want to explain this because everyone's gonna listen they're gonna be like you're married you're a dick here's the truth is that people always say you should never meet your idols because you will be disappointed right and i'm not saying i'm disappointed like matt's face is like so sad jesus but the thing is is that i got into matt's music and then i really got into like the way i think people feel about harry styles where it's like you're only listening to the lyrics of their music this was before social media really took off we were tweeting like you didn't really get an inside look at someone's life you created this person so like matt nathanson sitting here
Starting point is 00:25:22 is way different than the man you created i know you and i know your life and i know like a little bit more about you that i'm like oh that would actually lost her boner yeah it's all good brought it back down no i'm very glad i married my husband he's the great match for me this would never have worked out and now i see that but so yeah and here's my thing about it but i did want to make out with the version but here's my thing i think i'm certain almost i don't think that i've done that what you did in the journal yeah i've done that in my life 250 000 times probably a week where you like i but with different people or you can create like i have this thing and i'm sure everybody does but where you see somebody and you like i can go deep on somebody that i love their
Starting point is 00:26:05 work right which is what you did which is different but i can even like create a life like i'll be like see somebody be like oh my god our kids would be so awesome and we would have like oh how about like a brick walls and then a bed against the wall and in tribeca and it would be like you know and so yes so i'm not even on a superficial level i get it and then on like uh the music spoke to you level yeah like i am so down like if natalie merchant had been like i want you to tie your family to a hut and and burn them like when i was not that you would have done it, but I would have been like, yes, Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs, let me burn my village.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Yes. You know what I mean? Exactly. So I'm with you. But I mean, but it's so detailed. No, but no, it's not even- It's f***ing awesome. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:26:48 It was the best thing I've ever experienced in my life thus far. Thank you for that. It's so you. It is so healthy. It's so you. Focusing on that f***ing earring. Yes. The ugly feather earring that was probably $3.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Everyone had one. I had one. I had one in my hair. Of course. It was so good. Would you call it – you said like the magic earring or something? Well, no. It's because – yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:07 It was like lucky at the time for me. Yeah, the lucky earring. You know? Lucky earring. Wow. All right. Back to your record. I think we just call it a day.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Yeah. I know. It's incredible. I need a cigarette after that journal entry. Holy shit. So Matt, the reason that I love him so much and why people love – Can you tell – when's the first time you actually met him? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:24 That's what I want to know. Oh. The first time I actually met Matt is I was all the way working on The Insider. It is, isn't it? I was all the way working on The Insider. I had loved him for a decade and then I was working on The Insider and I had my own little digital show and I was like running around town and every one time someone played The Wiltern and they played like, you know, an okay play. I would go with my little camera crew and like make an interview. And so like I really just used my job and I was like, oh, who's your publicist?
Starting point is 00:27:51 I need to like definitely reach out to them. Get a big interview with a big star. And then I was so nervous. I could barely speak. I'm like, I honestly, I just feel like flustered now. Oh my God. That was a lot of reveal. That was strong.
Starting point is 00:28:03 You're naked right now. Yeah, you are. Let's talk about mess. And you're accepted. Isn't she, everybody? I've never loved you more. I know. This is like a whole new level.
Starting point is 00:28:11 I love it. Let's talk about girls that date musicians. Because we always tell them not to. A thousand percent. The worst idea. It's a worst idea, right? Oh, my God. Because you know Jack and I have a mutual ex-boyfriend musician.
Starting point is 00:28:24 He's from Panic at the Disco. Yeah. I did it him first. That beautiful boy that just stood there? Yeah. No, he actually did. he did stuff he did
Starting point is 00:28:33 he wrote a lot of the music I think he wrote some he did because they seem pretty successful now and he's gone you're not wrong maybe he didn't write any of the music
Starting point is 00:28:41 he's looking back but anyway but that kid's beautiful like from a physical standpoint our ex-boyfriend no he's not that kid that sort of looks like
Starting point is 00:28:48 yeah isn't he a model like he has his resting face where it's like hmm do we both have the same person I don't find him attractive at all
Starting point is 00:28:56 why did you date him because I was 18 oh where did you grow up Orange County okay that's no that okay
Starting point is 00:29:03 had no judgment to that shit you can't say okay to Orange County and not have a judgment wait so you guys both dated the kid from Panic at the Disco
Starting point is 00:29:11 who pouts yeah and what's the vote on him I mean I know what the vote is well he cheated on both of us
Starting point is 00:29:17 and that's why they tell girls here's the deal most men like if we're totally straight about it men are so
Starting point is 00:29:25 they're like sub-rational cave people and so it's like and I women also have you know but like women are so much more mature and so much more further ahead and i'm not just saying this because we're hanging out it's just a fact and so dating men in general
Starting point is 00:29:39 is like a bad idea and then dating a musician a thousand percent and then dating a musician or somebody like especially in los angeles where they sort of scooped the 15 percent of you're the funniest person here or like you're really the best you should be a model you should act you to play music and they all came to this place the worst part of LA is it is like a shit show
Starting point is 00:29:59 in that respect so I'm with you don't date musicians don't date actors well actors are even worse because they like because they have no soul yeah and they have like
Starting point is 00:30:06 that true security no it's true because they're malleable yeah most of them they're professional liars yeah and they don't have most of them I find
Starting point is 00:30:14 this is so dicky most of them don't really have a sense of style when not dressed by someone else this is true yeah a lot of jeans and loafers
Starting point is 00:30:24 in the men department for actors. And it's just like, what the fuck is wrong with you? Like, you know what I mean? They don't have, yeah. Like, who told you that that belt that matches your shoes is a good idea? They're just soulless. Soulless. They're vessels.
Starting point is 00:30:37 They're vessels. They're very talented. They are vessels. Empty vessels. A lot of them, yes. Empty. Empty, empty, empty. Musicians are just dicks.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Musicians are like, dude, I mean, we get up on stage and we're trying to fill, like, a hole our parents left. It's like the worst. So definitely do not date us. that yeah that's the worst idea all right i'm gonna have you um continue on this sad heart moment um this is really going so well um awesome so you have some songs on this new record a couple and i thought i would i would pull out my favorite lyrics and have you dissect them and like kind of say what they're about or like yeah what you mean by them because i picked out three that
Starting point is 00:31:15 all people can relate to okay okay so there's this song called let you go it's kind of at the end of the record one of my favorites and it's my favorite lyric on the entire record so the lyric goes if you see me smile it's all pretend the only reason i still call our friends is the chance one of them will say your name yeah that's real you know what i mean in there you know like how you stay friends with the people that were in that friend circle just to like a thousand percent like to really be able to pinpoint that
Starting point is 00:31:50 like to put into words into lyrics that thing that would have taken me like three years of therapy to admit I've got a couple I've got about 20
Starting point is 00:32:00 do you know what I mean you're like why do I keep doing this I don't understand it's wild when they say the person's name doesn't it feel like
Starting point is 00:32:06 the great like you feel like you have a secret that nobody else has and you're like oh my god isn't it awesome to hear that person's name
Starting point is 00:32:12 and it's like it's just a fucking name Like people name their dogs the same name as the fucking name of the person you dated. It's so true. They're like, who's the kid that you dated from Pennington Disco? Ryan. Okay, so they're like, come here, Ryan. It's a fucking like pit bull.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Like, you know what I mean? Or like a, or some dog that just farts all the time and sits in the corner. It's Ryan. And that's a guy that you, that name sent chills into your situation. It just kills you. Ugh, that's good. Yeah. So good.
Starting point is 00:32:35 That is good. Okay. Thank you. I love that one. Okay, there's a song called Way, Way Back. sometimes when you write songs you can be like as bold as you'd like
Starting point is 00:32:43 to be in real life and it's kind of saying like I know you're getting married and I know he looks awesome through the Instagram feed that I've stocked but here's the deal nobody is gonna
Starting point is 00:32:54 you don't even come close to me yeah cause you want people to have when they you know people say like we really just wanted what was best for each other
Starting point is 00:33:00 when you say like I'm sorry you guys broke up like I've never thought that once I broke up with somebody I was never like I always hope that they find some sort of happiness
Starting point is 00:33:08 most of them but I hope there's like a ceiling on it you know what i mean like and it's usually sexual like i hope that they can have kids or a house or whatever but like i want the sex to just be like yeah it was good like thanks honey yeah but the best sex of your life yeah it was me like and the song is kind of like here's the deal no matter what happens like i know and you know that like we got this and if you ever need to i'll be there in your mind in the way way back oh wait so in so the lyrics the lyric he well the lyric the one lyric i love is like um the part that's like oh he looks good
Starting point is 00:33:40 with his shirt off but can he sing yeah yeah but the lyric that i wrote down for this one is didn't know that forever only meant forever till you found someone better yeah that's a stark man that's a it's a dicky thing to say i know what i think about it can i change yeah yeah can i go back and uh amend this uh yeah that's a little bit of a that's real it's a f*** you song yeah
Starting point is 00:34:07 it's f*** you and then used to be which is the single is kind of like by the way I was kidding I'm a mess like kind of song so this lyric
Starting point is 00:34:14 and Matt's gonna sing this in like five seconds so get ready warm up those vocals you really just wanted to conserve yourself 100% this is such bullshit
Starting point is 00:34:23 I hope you pay him for this because he hasn't been paid for any I know what the hell is your charity work for you Kelsey we're gonna sell
Starting point is 00:34:28 so many records right now Lady Gang's gonna go buy this record because it's so good Look at how I'm selling it. I mean, if people don't buy it after this. My pimp.
Starting point is 00:34:36 It's like crazy. Okay, listen to this. The way it used to be lyrics. When we were young and we were free and all your friends were friends with me. Ooh, I like that. Swimming in our clothes when the beach was closed midnight on New Year's Eve. And if you're having trouble, baby, holding on to memories, I've got a king-size bed and a PhD in the way it used to be. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Okay, I have a question about like writing lyrics. Yeah, yeah. So for this record, you're married right now. Yeah. So you're obviously, like, pulling, like, things from your past. And also, does your wife ever get pissed off if there's, like, some song about something that's obviously not her? Yeah. So how can I approach this?
Starting point is 00:35:17 That's a long question. I meant to write a record that was sort of, like, uplifting because we're in a weird time. And I was like, I'm going to write all these empowerment songs, right? And then the first one came out and it was like, why'd you leave me? Like, why'd you go? and there was like and then every song I wrote was like
Starting point is 00:35:32 why'd you leave me and I was like what the fuck I'm like the happiest I've ever been in my actual life and so like I drilled deep
Starting point is 00:35:40 and I found some undealt with shit interesting so this is like therapeutic for you and so I guess I mean like it was honestly
Starting point is 00:35:46 one of those things were like by song 15 that I'd written and they were all like I thought I was what you needed I was like what the fuck
Starting point is 00:35:52 is wrong with me but I couldn't it was time to put a record out and I was like I gotta put this shit on an album so that's why
Starting point is 00:35:57 I called it Yeah, and my wife is – so here's the deal. My wife is – and everybody says this about their significant other. But, like, my wife is truly the great – like, unparalleled greatest human I've ever known. Truly, like – Except for Kelty. Kelty is second. Second.
Starting point is 00:36:14 But, yeah. And so anyway, so we've been together for quite a long time. So we've been together for about 27 years. Holy shit. Okay. And so we're very far past, like, the who's that song – she was never that person that was like, who's that song about? But but so when these come up, she just kind of goes, oh, there's that song about that, that that somehow linked to this and this, you know, she kind of storytelling where it's like it doesn't always have to. And I just have to say, yeah, but but it's true.
Starting point is 00:36:42 It doesn't need to when you're really like super creative. I guess you tap into something. But these were all fairly personal, pretty right up the pretty real. Yeah, because I think like sometimes on this podcast, we bring up mutual X and like. but because that and people always like why can't you let it go but truly that's the last great tragedy in my life because after i dated him i found chris and like yeah marriage is hard and it's up and down and whatever and life's up and down but like that was my last heartbreak so whenever we talk about dating or advice or like that that's the story that i was part of your
Starting point is 00:37:14 life you know what i mean and it's so it's not that i still care or that i can't let it go i've let it go like i'm also it's just a funny story between the two of us we wouldn't talk about it all the time that's an incredible thing that you guys both is that how you met that's how we know each other yeah okay yeah yeah so but here's the other theory to like take it even further like all the hurt that you've had in your relationships in your life all stem back somehow to what happened to you as a kid with your either your parents or whatever and that's what's fascinating about it is that you kind of repeat the same shit over and over with different people and so it's usually like it's on like a on like a reptilian brain level the things that we
Starting point is 00:37:47 play out in our now life are kind of wounds that we were created in our young life and so in that respect i think i'm still digging to the bottom just so and so when you tell that story on some level you're probably still kind of mining that and churning it over to kind of like figure it out because the problem is still there he's just a representation like they really don't matter the other person doesn't matter even if you adore them they don't matter it's sort of about your evolution and so that's what he represents he's like a mirror to like he's just a real sharp mirror about how man men are they suck they're the worst yeah that's like a very healthy approach for an artist that I think
Starting point is 00:38:25 people struggle with, too. It's not about the person. It's about what you were going through, and it's the mirror for you. When we talked about this just before, everybody sees the world through their own... So even your memories with someone else are all your own memories, and their memories...
Starting point is 00:38:41 And you can find common ground, and you can even express it, but think about how hard it is to communicate with somebody that you love and see every day, and that you... The words that you use... Sometimes I'll find myself saying a word and it's interpreted as a different thing by the person even somebody i adore my wife and i'll be like dude i i said this like and now we've kind of gotten into a good groove because it's like a constant thing of church of yeah working on it but still it's like
Starting point is 00:39:06 most every human being speaks a different version of the same language and everybody sees shit through their own lens and so it really is like you do live and die alone even not in a depressing way but not in a depressing way kind of in like a it's pretty rad and we get to kind of bump against other humans and hopefully some of them stick like yeah oh god
Starting point is 00:39:25 so depressing on that note I dig it I think it's kind of awesome but yeah I get it that could be dark okay time
Starting point is 00:39:32 wait Kelsey when is Matt's birthday I have no idea yeah that's oh I didn't know that you haven't birthday guests
Starting point is 00:39:40 in the past like 20 years by the way Bono's birthday is uh the same May 10th oh I'm May 13th is that your birthday no but my wife's
Starting point is 00:39:47 is May 13th what's your birthday my sister's birthday is it really a lot of people I had sex nine months before that chunk of May, August, because I think everyone's on vacation. Oh, it's like summer 11.
Starting point is 00:39:55 Yeah, that's it. Summer 11. Because like my dad is around that time. Bono, who's like my favorite. That's what I'm saying. Like, I loved you two so much as a kid. Oh, March 28th. Wait, why did you come up with Bono?
Starting point is 00:40:09 Because I was thinking about people that like, even in a heterosexual way, people that like I f***ing sweated as a kid. Because music, I love music so much that when an artist touches like me in a way, I sort of like went all in so i sort of like i really like you should have known but the only thing that has been i i do i'm out of here no well you can you get your guitar ready and i'll tell a story oh my god do i want to like play behind it like your story no no no no no no here's the thing that has been the most difficult this year of my love of matt nathanson and it's put me to the test oh no i'm sort of sweating this pretty much every day of my life i get home no matter
Starting point is 00:40:48 what time it is and i put my sonos on to matt nathanson radio like every day i mean he is the soundtrack to my life when i'm at home i can't imagine culty really listening to listening to like music anything other than matt nathanson i put matt nathanson radio on it earlier this year well 2018 matt loves deaf leopard and he released a deaf leopard tribute can i just can i defend myself you don't have to defend i saw the eyes no i like deaf leopard i just it It just seems off the – Off-brand. Oh, it doesn't – yeah, it is off-brand.
Starting point is 00:41:20 Not very Natalie Merchant. I was so down with – I mean, Def Leppard, I think, are one of my favorite bands, but I'm so down. When I was a kid, I used to dress up in my – I used to – I was kind of heavyset, and I used to sort of sausage myself into my mom's leather pants and, like, pretend I was the singer in Def Leppard, Joe Elliott. And I would lip sync in front of the mirror, and I had – so – and I was kind of heavy, so I'd have to, like, you know, squeeze. And then we didn't have – you could order these Union Jack t-shirts, which are the British flag. And you could order them through the back of Circus Magazine. But I didn't ever do that because we didn't really do that. We didn't order things.
Starting point is 00:41:53 So I used marker and I drew. Made a Union Jack. My buddy and I did a Union Jack and we cut the sleeves off and we lip synced to Def Leppard. And then I spilled – I sweat because I was a little bit – and I spilled my Sprite. Oh, no. So when we got finished, I took my shirt off and the Union Jack had like bled through to my pale, pasty like stomach and back. So anyway, that's so many ways that I love Def Leppard, like love, love, love. So he put out this Def Leppard tribute album that actually was like crazy successful.
Starting point is 00:42:27 It was fun. It was like charting all over iTunes. And I was like, oh, that little indie Matt Nathanson, like he's not usually like top three on iTunes, but okay. But it was for this Pyromania or whatever the record. Pyromania. Pyromania. There you go.
Starting point is 00:42:40 That's a terrible title. Wow. Anyway, so now when I go home and it's time for me to relax. I play Matt Nathanson radio but sometimes the Def Leppard cover comes over push it down the algorithm or just play the shuffle of all
Starting point is 00:42:56 that you own I know but now I love Matt so much that I'm like some of his greatest and most esteemed works and now I've had to start to enjoy the Def Leppard of it all and I'm just like I mean it's acoustic version but I know the difference between when it comes on and I'm like
Starting point is 00:43:12 is this new and I'm like no the songwriting is not as good this is not Matt Nathanson damn here's the deal I'm going to get a tattoo that just says CK
Starting point is 00:43:21 consider Kelty so every time I go to do something creative I'll be like where's Kelty going to land with this that's the president
Starting point is 00:43:30 of my fan club totally I have to respect the president thank you okay it's time Matt is now going to play his new single
Starting point is 00:43:37 it's called Used To Be I will let you know that it comes on quite often on Sirius XM The Pulse please try not to sing along because we know your voice is not good no I'm not going to sing along
Starting point is 00:43:45 the lady gang okay he's tuning his guitar kelty's just being crazy being a crazy person crazy eyes crazy eyes kelty ck consider kelty she's getting a video on her phone of course she is okay next time we need to sell a lady box i'm just gonna post this oh because he's sitting in front of it oh wow that's nice where did you grow up atlanta oh where'd you grow up boston oh you do seem very bostonian yeah it's the anger when people drive anger oh my god there's so much anger in boston i know everybody's pissed it's a weird entitlement thing i think it's because we drove the british out you know i mean in 1776 a lot of drinking too a lot of drinking and like just being pissed
Starting point is 00:44:35 A lot of Irish alcoholics. Irish, all my, well, I can't, I get, yeah. Can't go too deep into it on the podcast in case they're listening, but we got a lot of them. Irish alcoholics. Yeah, Irish alcoholics. And then I'm Jewish. My dad is Jewish. My mother's Irish Catholic.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Me too. Yeah. Oh, really? It's a very fun combo. How did that marriage go? They're still together. Oh, my God. That's so good.
Starting point is 00:44:59 But neither were religious. Oh, okay. Like, grew up religious, and then they were like, fuck this. We're going to do our own thing. I like it. Yeah, mine, it was not so good. Not together anymore. No, it was a little bit of a worst marriage in history kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Well, there's no guilt like Jews and Catholics. Dude, it's unbelievable. I have the most guilt of anybody. That combination, it's crushing. Dude, and you know what? It travels through. P.S., you don't have any children. No, not yet.
Starting point is 00:45:22 So when you do, I want you to know that your guilt is so strong that it will move through your genes. No. Yeah, your kid will have it. But what if my husband has, like, none? It doesn't matter. It's the Jewish-Catholic guilt is so strong. Darn it. That it dominates.
Starting point is 00:45:36 It's kind of like a certain hair color, you know what I mean? Like in the genetic makeup. Yeah, brown eyes. Brown eyes and guilt. Yeah. And then did you light the Christmas tree eight times like we did? No, we didn't. No, I'm just kidding.
Starting point is 00:45:46 I was like, that's actually a pretty great idea. That's super dangerous, but yes. Yeah. But awesome. No, we did both, though. Yeah, we got a lot of presents. Yeah, we did, too. This is, you know, that's upsetting the guilt part.
Starting point is 00:45:58 So, Used to Be. Used to Be is just, truthfully, it's about a song about a woman. who I know, who I used to have a... I used to be in a relationship with. Uh-huh. And she... I hope you're better at this in your show.
Starting point is 00:46:19 Yeah, yeah, it's awesome. Everything is with a question mark? It never gets taped at the shows. So anyway, it's a song about a woman who is getting married, who I used to date, and I might have looked at her Instagram, and they seem happy. And I was psyched.
Starting point is 00:46:35 for them but then part of me was like ah but i was still psyched and so i wrote a song where the it's essentially saying hey in case you're i know you're moving on and i know your life looks awesome but in case you wanted to know how good we had it i'm still here like and not still you know not still here like come find me i'm more like i'm still here in the past i'll be haunted yeah yeah i'll be stuck in the past wait is this the sex one uh they're all about sex it's music it's all yeah
Starting point is 00:47:04 totally it's all sex it's humans nice okay still got the same old number still drive the car
Starting point is 00:47:13 you hate I'm still fighting with my father still staying out too late still leave the back door open I still let the
Starting point is 00:47:23 dog escape maybe I'm deep down hoping you'll come back to yell at me like you used to do And you were right I'm just a stubborn fool
Starting point is 00:47:36 Who's living in the past When we were young and we were free And all your friends were friends with me Swimming in our clothes when the beach was closed Midnight on New Year's Eve And if you're having trouble, baby Holding on to memories I got a king-size bed and a PhD
Starting point is 00:47:59 In the way it used to be I've got a king-size bed and a Ph.D. in the way it used to be. And when you write your movie, your autobiography, and can't reach the sweetest detail, feel free to call on me. And write how I made you shiver, and the ground underneath us shook. The devil is in the details. He and I get on real good like we used to do. And you were right, I'm just a stubborn fool
Starting point is 00:48:35 You're living in the past When we were young and we were free All your friends were friends with me Slimming in our clothes when the beach was closed Late at night on New Year's Eve And if you're having trouble, baby Holding on to memories I got a king-size bed and a PhD
Starting point is 00:48:57 In the way it used to be I got a king-size bed and a Ph.D. in the way it used to be. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. You know it's ancient history, but if you're having trouble, baby, holding on to memories. I got a king-size bed and a Ph.D. in the way it used to be. We were young and we were free And all your friends are fans of me Swimming in our clothes when the beach was closed
Starting point is 00:49:35 Midnight on New Year's Eve And if you're having trouble, baby Holding on to memories I got a king-size bed and a PhD In the way it used to be I got a king-size bed and a PhD In the way it used to be Yeah!
Starting point is 00:49:54 That was awesome. That was so good. Did you love it? I mean, your music is like panty dropping music. That's what I mean. I mean, I don't want to be inappropriate. Oh my God, be inappropriate. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:50:06 But like, it's crazy. Like everybody needs to put this on after like a first date, like when they invite the guy back home. Yeah, like 100%. Your voice is like stunning. What do you think is your most romantic song? I mean it's seemingly it's coming in higher
Starting point is 00:50:23 that one although it's about loss so I don't know I mean I actually don't write anything happy yeah they're all dark yeah you don't have anything
Starting point is 00:50:31 people love this one and play this at their graduation however it's about death yeah totally it's about falling down a well yeah is that weird that they play it
Starting point is 00:50:39 I think probably that song Run that I did with Sugarland oh yeah that's hot they people that seems yeah Jen and Jennifer and I
Starting point is 00:50:46 sang this song and it's kind of like the first line is I want to watch you undress, I want to watch you glow, you know, that kind of stuff, and then turning me on, that kind of stuff. That's sexy-ish. Okay, Kelty, warranted. Oh my God, this is-
Starting point is 00:51:00 Oh, thank you. Yeah, we get it. We get it. We get it. Are you guys making less fun of me? Because, well, so my little victory's tattoo, Jack, it's Jack's writing. Yeah, it's her. Her handwriting.
Starting point is 00:51:10 I'm a tattoo designer now. Yeah. That's an incredible handwriting you've got. I know, isn't it so beautiful? And like, they looked at me like, here's a song title on your wrist? That's a positive song. that's my only really my only
Starting point is 00:51:20 positive song it's like a minute long that's why so short I couldn't get I was like alright alright we're done
Starting point is 00:51:26 we're good I have song lyrics tattooed on me James Taylor which song Sweet Baby James oh yeah what a song my dad used to sing it to me
Starting point is 00:51:33 every night really my dad is tone deaf Jewish and he played the guitar and he would sing Sweet Baby James like almost every night
Starting point is 00:51:41 to me and I had never heard James Taylor do it until like I was a little bit older and I remember being like dad this is actually It actually doesn't sound like the same song.
Starting point is 00:51:51 The song is so good. I love your version, but it's a little different. And my mom's like, he's tone deaf. Oh, my God. That's adorable, though. That's awesome. Yeah, that song ruled. I mean, James Taylor is like, and that lyric, ain't it just, and not in Sweet Baby James,
Starting point is 00:52:07 but in my mind, I've gone to Carolina, in my mind, that line about, ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Ooh. That is so good. Who do you think is like the greatest songwriter? songwriter other than yourself? I could literally
Starting point is 00:52:24 cry every time I hear it. I don't think I've ever, but just the intro, like. Aww. He's amazing. So good. Who's your, like,
Starting point is 00:52:33 This is what Matt did at parties when he was a loser to get laid. I never did, actually. I can 100% see this. I used to go back to my room crying and then play. That's why all the songs
Starting point is 00:52:42 are so good. It's not bad, but. The goobers who bring their guitar and play at parties are never talented. Well, no, that's, there are certain people that do that for sure.
Starting point is 00:52:48 and they've all you can definitely tell the people that like make music where you're like that person definitely was like swinging their dick
Starting point is 00:52:55 and was like hey baby yeah totally it's like but so but James Taylor is great
Starting point is 00:53:03 but I would say my favorite I mean songwriter wise like songwriter like acoustic guitar songwriter or like so for me
Starting point is 00:53:12 I'm a super nerd this is a great question so Bob Dylan is to me kind of the lyrical peak because he does everything really well so he'll write
Starting point is 00:53:21 like the most vicious thing and he'll write the most heartbroken thing he has a line that says so the song is a little bit
Starting point is 00:53:28 it's like it's called Just Like a Woman and he says he goes and when we meet again and are introduced as friends
Starting point is 00:53:38 please don't let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world like if that's not like a I mean that's that just crushes me so dylan is sort of unstoppable on all sides but i mean i love
Starting point is 00:53:53 so many lyricists i'm a nerd for lyrics and so i have that's why your lyrics are so it's so fun it's like but dylan is is that is one of the highlights and then uh i'm trying to think of another i mean obviously like i mean jeff buckley too this song called morning theft and then leonard cohen obviously hallelujah is a great song but like all his leonard cohen stuff is heavy. I mean, it's just, there's so much. I don't know any of these people, because I've literally only been listening to Matt Nathanson for the last 15 years. She's like, who's Matt Dillon?
Starting point is 00:54:23 I feel like in Canada, like, Leonard Cohen is like one of the founding fathers of that country. But so many. It doesn't take much in Canada, though. Kelty's the most famous person. That's not true. I couldn't even shenagle my way onto the Canada's Most Beautiful list, and there was people
Starting point is 00:54:39 I didn't even know. Like, after Celine Dion and, like, Justin Bieber, who else is there, people? Drake the guy from Creed oh yeah is he from Canada that's what I mean
Starting point is 00:54:48 those are the kind of people they put on the list and I'm like I'm here with two television shows can I get on the goddamn list I mean it's Creed he's also not pretty so
Starting point is 00:54:56 it was like the lead singer of Our Lady Peace I'm like since when do we still care about Our Lady Peace like go fuck yourself you get like a Tim Hortons that's what I need
Starting point is 00:55:04 yes like an endorsement deal Tim Hortons is disgusting oh you're so wrong about that wait so I have a question lyrically like
Starting point is 00:55:10 what songs like lyric wise what music really like like today for example we're doing this thing like totally strange
Starting point is 00:55:19 a great lyric that I was singing today on this thing that I'm doing this fun little thing but you know like Pete Wentz writes incredible lyrics
Starting point is 00:55:27 yeah so like except for like none of his lyrics really make sense so listen to this though there's I'm trying to think
Starting point is 00:55:33 of what the best line it's a bunch of mumbo jumbo I sang a lyric today and it's totally like it's a really untrained ear that's true maybe I'm not looking that's how I feel
Starting point is 00:55:44 when I listen to Bon Iver I'm like, no, I should understand. I told you my Bon Iver story where I rewrote this song. Okay. I smoked weed for like one of the first times and I put on a Bon Iver record and there's a song called Michigan, which I think is like one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The lyrics don't make any sense.
Starting point is 00:56:01 So I smoked weed and rewrote the lyrics to Michigan and now it's great. That's excellent. While I've got you, can I totally nerd out on lyrics for a second with you or is that like you guys have places to go? So, but okay. So I'm like, I'm actually sleeping here. So have you guys heard this Phoebe Bridger song called Funeral? No, but Emotional Motion Sickness is one of the best songs.
Starting point is 00:56:20 It's a great song. You can't play that, though. No, I'm not going to play it. I'm just going to read you the lyric. We can't clear it. Hold on. I'm just going to read you. Oh, I love that other song.
Starting point is 00:56:27 Wait, and also Matt has this other song that has this great lyrics, but it's only on this live album, and it's only one lyric, and then you don't play the rest of it. I don't? What is it? When the guy's like, can you play a line from Lie? Oh, I have a song called Lie. But you only played two clusters of it. Yeah, the chorus in that song was Please fix your own lie before you start attacking mine
Starting point is 00:56:48 I wrote it in college, I was so mad But that was not what you sang on the record Oh no, what did I do? I don't feel much like Oh yeah, I don't feel much like talking tonight I'd rather, I don't know Not twist I'd rather not have you twist my words around again
Starting point is 00:57:05 And give you something to feel I'd rather keep my distance Thank you very much Thank you very much Thank you next It's the original Panky Necks. It was in the 1800s when I wrote that. So here's an example of a great lyricist.
Starting point is 00:57:20 I think this song is nuts. So she says, the dogs are very, I love it. You really stirred their emotions. I know. You're there at this song and they're trying to hump. I'm not going to sing it, but I'm singing at a funeral tomorrow for a kid a year older than me. And I've been talking to his dad and it makes me so sad. When I think too much about it, I can't breathe.
Starting point is 00:57:39 and I have this dream where I'm screaming underwater while my friends are all waving from the shore and I don't need you to tell me what that means. I don't believe in that stuff anymore. Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time and that's just how I feel. Always have and I always will. I have a friend I call when I'm bored to tears,
Starting point is 00:57:55 when I bored myself to tears and we talk until we think we might just kill ourselves but then we laugh until it disappears. And last night I blacked out in my car and I woke up in my childhood bed wishing I was someone else, feeling sorry for myself and then I remembered someone's kid was dead. jesus christ i'm so blue all the time and that's just how i feel and it's i mean and the song is
Starting point is 00:58:15 so good i mean like it's so good and lyrically when she gets to that thing of like i'm feeling sorry for myself and then i just remembered somebody's kids dead and it's just like my mind so anyway that's the i do that stuff i literally that my life is like spent sitting and crying to myself like reading people's shit and being like wow i just try and get turned on by other people's songs because it's so fucking bad. So what do you think the Lady Gang song
Starting point is 00:58:41 will sound like? Like dogs barking in the background. Dogs barking. Definite like sort of pink. Motif? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:50 Sort of like a tool situation. Tool? Yeah, like the stuff that you... I was like, you know what? I kind of like industrial.
Starting point is 00:58:59 Yeah, it's going to be like Skinny Puppy or Slayer. Yeah, yeah. It's going to be like Raining Blood. Gwar. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:05 Oh my God. Well, Matt Nathanson, now that I've completely embarrassed myself slash turned on our entire fan base to your awesome music. You're welcome, ladies. I hope your basements are flooded. Yup, that sucks. And music!
Starting point is 00:59:18 Hi! You can go to mattnathanson.com to get all the records, but they're also all on iTunes and Spotify. And Matt's going on tour, and it's basically sold out, if you haven't got your tickets already, like I got mine. What? Why'd you get tickets? Of course I got... She's a supporter.
Starting point is 00:59:33 The L.A. show is not sold out yet. Right. Where are you going? L.A. You guys are welcome to come. When is this? It's in March. March what? March 20th. Oh, he doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:59:43 I don't know. Is it your new birthday? It's close to my birthday because my birthday's in San Francisco, two shows the day before. So yeah, it's around then. Okay. So around March 28th. You guys know that I never leave the house. No, I'm shocked that you're going to.
Starting point is 00:59:54 I will go to a Matt Nathanson concert by myself. The last concert I went to at the Wiltern was by myself. Wow. And I stood there and I sang every word by myself and then I left. Like, I'm a f***ing weirdo. Anyway. You're the best. I'm so excited.
Starting point is 01:00:05 We're going. Come on, Lady Gang. And get on tour, because Matt's even better live. And thank you for being here. I'm sorry I'm creepy. I'm sorry to your family. I'm sorry to your kid. I'm sorry to your wife.
Starting point is 01:00:16 I'm sorry to your manager. Like, all the people that I, like, conned into being here. I'm very sorry, but you're very talented. And please go support Matt, because he is kind of an indie artist with a record deal, but kind of indie. And so, like, it actually matters when you buy his records. So go buy it, and don't download it for free. Okay, bye.
