All right, Lady Gang community, I am calling on you because it is one of my favorite times
of year, the Make March Matter campaign for Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
It is such a special place.
It's a nonprofit pediatric hospital ranked among the top five in the nation on U.S.
News and World Report's prestigious honor roll of children's hospitals.
So Make March Matter is a campaign to raise $1 million or more during the month of March
through a variety of fundraising efforts in support of programs and services at CHLA that
create hope and build a healthier future for children. So basically what you do is you make
a purchase, make a donation or participate in an event. And for a complete list of participating
businesses like the Lady Gang and others, visit makemarchmatter.org. Support the businesses that
support Children's Hospital LA. Lady Gang is making a contribution and raising awareness
surrounding the campaign for the entire month of March. Will you do the same and will you join us?
And if you're going to do that, why don't you share on social media and use hashtag
make March matter. And the handle is at make March matter. Let's spread the word and let's
get this hospital lots and lots of money for make March matter because they make so many families
healthier and happier every year. All right, ladies, we customize everything in our lives.
Why are we not customizing our mattresses? I did with Helix and I am obsessed with my mattress.
So there's a quiz that you take and it's two minutes, literally two minutes of your life.
It matches your body type and your sleep preferences for the perfect mattress for you.
We love it so much. And Helix is offering up to $200 off all mattress orders and two free pillows
for our listeners at helixsleep.com slash lady.
That's helixsleep.com slash lady
for $200 off your mattress and two free pillows.
Well, what is this?
Welcome to the Lady Gang.
That's amazing.
Say that again.
The Lady Gang.
Things are about to change around here.
Each week, we catch up with Hollywood's hottest girl posse,
Kelty Knight, Becca Tobin, and Jack Vanek.
Hello, hello, hello.
Welcome to the Lady Gang.
I am Becca Tobin here with Jack Vanek and Kelty Knight.
Hello.
You sound amazing, Becca.
I know it took a while to get that mic working.
It's like first time podcasting all over again.
Guys, I hate technology.
I mean, I love it because we're able to do this, but I also really nothing infuriates
me more than when I see that colored circle come up on my laptop and never go away.
Oh, you're still having your laptop has a colored circle.
That is your issue.
Yeah, that's your issue, babe.
That computer is old.
I'm basically Bethany Frankel.
I do not use computers, like only to do podcasting. I only opened my laptop to do podcasting.
I was thinking about this last night, Becca, because I had my AirPods in and it made me
think about the time that you like refused to get AirPods because you're so stuck at using the old
headphones. And I just want to say, I never bought AirPods, but I took Zach's old ones.
So I still, he was going to just get rid of them. So I still have never caved, but he of course had
to get the new ones and I just took the old ones. So I'm still old school. Yeah. You still won't
contribute the money to the air pod. No, no, but it's ridiculous. And the fact that there's
how many versions of an air pod now you Apple. Okay. Now it's time for good week. Yes, it is
bad week. Oh no, Jack, go for it. Okay. Um, my good week I'm in New York right now. And my good
week is that i have taken my first flight in the past almost a year and it was thrilling it's so
good flying thrilling being well just being at the airport thinking i'm traveling somewhere i mean
i'm stuck in a hotel room and i can't leave for four days and after that i won't be doing anything
either but like it was so cool to be at the airport thinking i was gonna go do something
It was almost as good as actually, you know, having a vacation.
Yeah.
How many people were on your plane?
Were there a lot?
No, it was empty.
I flew on a Wednesday, which was good.
So I felt very safe.
I flew Delta.
It was awesome.
They do a very good job.
So, and that was also a good week that I actually felt safe on a plane because I've been terrified
to step foot on a plane.
I haven't even seen another person other than Jared or my parents in the past 10 months.
So it was a, it was a good experience.
my bad week was so i'm on the plane and one of the flight attendants comes up and talks to me
because i was like a sky miles member and she was thanking me for being on the flight because
obviously i haven't done anything with delta in like a year and as she's talking to me she's kind
of looking behind me and i had my computer open she keeps like glancing at my screen glancing at
my screen and then when we finished talking i had an article pulled up on my computer about says the
different stages of body composition oh research that i was doing for work and uh she probably
thought that i was a murderer so that was super fun that's exciting wow i don't want to know
about the stages of body composition ever if you ever decide that you do then i can be of help
one of the greatest things that you've done on tiktok this whole year was your little like
serial killer TikTok. I was like, Oh wait, I'm into crime. I'm into crime. Well, it's like a
one minute murder thing. I'm going to continue doing those. Cause I actually, I feel like that's
where my niche is. That's your niche. My niche is not dancing on TikTok. It's, it's describing
different murders. So that's where I'm very excited because Ryan Murphy's doing Jeffrey
Dahmer. Oh, he is. I didn't know that. I don't know. I'm really excited though. All right, Becca.
Okay. My good week is that for not New Year's Eve, but for like this year's intentions was
to spend less time on scrolling mindlessly on social media because when I'm sitting on set
because of COVID, you're not as social when you're on set anymore. So you're either reading a book,
emails, but most of the time it's just scrolling on Instagram. And I realized that I must have been
doing so many hours. I'm embarrassed. So I put the 10 minute timer on my Instagram and it's been
about a week and I have not, I have not done more than 10 minutes on Instagram.
Oh, you can time yourself on Instagram now? You can set a timer and then it says you've been on
Instagram for 10 minutes. It'll like pop up, but you could do it for however many increments of
time that you want. And so I did 10 minutes because that felt good. Yeah. I have an hour.
You have an hour? Oh my God. I probably spent way more time on Instagram than an hour. Just
mindlessly. Yeah. It's mindless, but a good trick, if you're trying to minimize it,
you don't want to set a timer. I started off in moving the app into another folder.
So it's not this automatic, you reach for it, you click it. You're not used to having it in
that place. We're so dumb. They've programmed us literally, it's slot machines. Our phones are
slot machines. So if you put it in a different folder, inside of a folder and not where you're
used to having it, you won't find yourself just like mindlessly opening up the app. So that will
help you if you need any help. Okay. So my bad week is this, um, for my birthday every year,
my friend from new Orleans sends me king cakes, those cakes with all the little plastic babies
in them for Mardi Gras. And I've been trying to do no sugar because I've just consumed so much
sugar sitting around during COVID and my skin's been doing really well. And I'm just so thrilled
about it and i received a shipment in canada of every king cake that they make from new orleans
my friend vanessa put a fedex box the size of me filled it with king king cakes and i have not
stopped eating sugar i am addicted like fully back back on the sauce i'm on the sauce and i
can't get off with a king cake you said they put a bunch of babies they put babies in there
like that? King cake has in the cake? King cake has one baby in it, right? But you said a lot
of babies. Well, I have multiple cakes, so there's multiple babies, but yeah. What do you mean a
baby? Kelsey, you know about this. You have to. The tradition with a king cake is they put in a
little plastic baby. It's the size of a quarter almost. And it's a naked baby and it's baked.
they put it somewhere in the king cake and then i guess whoever gets the baby in their slice it's
the lucky one is the lucky one so you have a money cake at your birthday when you were young
a money cake yeah it's a big big thing in canada so you would take like a dollar worth of coins
like quarters loonies like whatever and you'd wrap them in wax paper and then you
bake them in the cake we probably poisoned ourselves and then you would
i feel like eating a metal like that is so bad to be eating yeah canada's dumb
oh wait speaking of canada people are getting very angry with me for on the podcast by just
you're about your clumping together clumping together canada as all canada and they want
me to separate and say british columbia because they're like we don't go down to california and
say that we're in america and i'm like well sometimes you might but i realize the canadian
is the one who's always lumping in just with the broad canada so i'm just following kelty's lead
the canadian well there's an east coast west coast fight and then there's the whole quebec
situation so there are you know like east coast thinks they're the best west coast thinks they're
the best right but they don't like because apparently they don't like it when we clump
them together in certain generalizations about, you know, Vancouver loves recycling. Apparently
they're the only people who really are that passionate about recycling in the country.
They're like, don't, don't pin me as a recycler. Yeah. God forbid. I live in Ontario.
Yeah. Ontario. I just put it all together. Calgary. We burn it. I don't know.
guilty um okay so i have a good week that is a bad week okay i as you know i am torn between
getting this haircut that i really want and i was like don't do it don't do it and wait the shag
shag yeah okay and so people have been like you you would look good you'd look good i don't know
and i just like i spent so much time growing my hair that i i just want i'm not taking this
lightly, you know? So I went down a K-hole and I ordered like six sets of fake bangs from Amazon.
And I had to order like many different sets because I ordered the first two and the color
was not right. And so then I went back and ordered a bunch of other colors and like,
anyway, so I got the bangs and I'm unsure if I look great or not. So I took a picture with them.
I'm going to post it on the social media. And I would love if everyone can tell me if they think
like i'm one step closer to the shag here's the picture
well kelty that's you're it's not it's not even she assumed into her teeth let me just tell you
something that's just a bang isn't it it's kind of a bang i mean it's just to see i don't know
anyway shag like layers that go down your face yes like a fair faucet well the bang was called
on amazon is called the french bang so it has bangs and then it has like little pieces so i
thought it would be this most similar anyway i'm just not sure but here's the real issue
is that now i have one bang that kind of matches my hair and then i have like six bangs that are
completely the wrong color and like they're non-returnable i don't know what to do with the
bangs i feel like amazon will take back anything even like food they will i think i don't i don't
know if this is returnable. So I, if anyone is like a dark Brown with a reddish, like mahogany
tinge and needs a bang, let me know on Instagram. I'll send you a bang. The trick with you getting
this haircut is it's all in the styling. So there's people in LA who have really incredible
haircuts, but if you go home and you don't know how to style it, if you don't, you're not edgy
or edgy enough with it, then you end up looking like a soccer mom. Yeah. Which is going to be
my problem because i go to soccer mom so fast and moody if you don't style it are you up for
styling your hair every single day no because here's my shot shags for you the bang is going
to be the bad week so my good week is that becca tobin inspired me and and and really influenced
me so the other day this few weeks ago she did that robe thing on her head where you have your
wet hair and you twist the robe the hair around the robe put it with no dry hair oh okay well i
took it one step further i did it wet and slept in it that's one step back no look how amazing my
hair looks oh that's from doing it with wet hair it does look good hair i slept in it and no heat
curls it's like staying all day it's so beautiful and shiny so easy and then i saw online that these
people heatless hair are selling like a version of this that is like all matchy and very cute
and made of silk or whatever but the fact that you can do it with a robe tie is incredible i will
never wake up in the morning slept on my hair and then put a curling iron on it again if i want this
hair i've tried it before and it was an absolute disaster for my hair really it was horrible my
hair gets so kinky and then it gets so oily if it's like not for me but it looks amazing on you
I'm so beautiful. And this Becca, like for all the things that you've given me in my life,
I think this is the greatest thing that I've ever. You're so welcome. It's better than all
the jewelry, all the styles I've stolen from you. You know, the housewares, like everything that
I've knocked off from you. This is most important. All right. Wow. When we come back, the queen of
style is here. All right. I am so excited to share our black owned business of the month because this

Our guest today is fashion royalty. She's been in the design business for 53 years and is
known for being an innovator. She created the first ever Try Before You Buy website and was
the first designer ever to have a store on eBay. Icon. Not only that, but she is credited for
creating some of the most iconic pieces that you've seen. Think the red piece, one piece
bathing suit worn by Farrah Fawcett on that iconic 70s poster. The bathing suit worn by Whitney
Houston on the back cover of her debut album. I mean, these are cultural zeitgeist moments.
She's also credited with popularizing the shoulder pad in women's wear in the 1980s.
You're welcome, Becca Tobin, who loves a blazer.
Her work is included in the collections of the Met Museum.
And in 2016, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA and the Women's Entrepreneurship
Day Pioneer Award at the United Nations.
There's so much I could go on.
The whole podcast could just be me talking about your career.
She's got a brand new book, I Am Invincible, that focuses on the benefits of a healthy
lifestyles through sleep, diet, exercise, and personal style that will be released
in January. Please welcome to the show, Norma Kamali, the icon.
Hi there. It's exhausting being you, isn't it?
Actually, you could be right. No, it's actually a lot of fun. I finally,
I have to say when you decide the kind of life you want to live, and I decided I wanted to live
a creative life and I'm actually doing it and have been. So I'm, I'm lucky and I'm happy to say
it is exhausting, but it's, it's a good life. I was thinking about you and I was thinking about
us and how in the last, I guess, probably 10 years, we've been doing Lady Gang five years.
It's become like the buzzword of the millennia, like a female empowerment entrepreneur. Like you
can do anything. Now, when you started in this business, it was not chic. It was not cool for
a female to be an entrepreneur and to start her own thing. It was like all the great men had a
great female beside them, but females were not the entrepreneurs. So what was that like?
It just didn't exist. I didn't know anybody that I truly didn't know anybody. And had I not made
one of the big decisions of my life, I probably would never have started a business. I wasn't
sort of an aggressive female. I wanted to continue making clothes and I was really happy. But
you know, I got married at 19. So at 29, I started to bring clothes from London and
and started selling them. And I said, I want to open a store, we opened a store
$285 for a nine by 12 space in a basement. And that's how I started my company. And he would he
was a student. And he sold the clothes during the day. And then I started designing clothes.
And and for some reason, I got a lot of attention, even though I knew I didn't know what I was doing.
I got a lot of attention and the business did very well.
And 10 years later, he obviously grew in one direction.
I was so happy to have found this thing that I love to do.
and um and I think he was threatened by what that I had this energy and that I was feeling
so good about what what I was doing to be honest at at that point I knew we weren't meant for each
other but I have to say I'd already left him I was in an empty apartment with a mattress I didn't
even have curtains. I had nothing. And I just remember crying so much. I don't think I ever
cried as much as I cried. My face was swollen. I asked a lawyer about a few months earlier if I
could take if I left, if I could take anything. And they said, you can't take anything. It's like
theft, even though it's your business. If you leave and take it, it's like theft. So I couldn't
take anything. And now I have to say, I really enjoy business. I didn't think it was my thing,
but I, I like it. I think it makes me a better designer. And obviously women, the more women
know about business and finance, the more power you have. So that the, the notion of women not
being good at business is still as you know there are a lot of women that sort of like
shy away from it so yeah it's interesting that's not good you have such a strong personal style
and i think your woman who who shops um for the for your clothes has this unique personal style
but also you know it's just like a stylish bitch like i just don't know how to describe it it's
like you just put the clothes on and you're like, I'm pulled the together. And I have no personal
style. Becca and Jack both have amazing personal styles. Becca is very much your 1980s dream girl.
She loves a shoulder pad. She loves like a boxy menswear. Jack is like, wears clothes that I've
never seen. Like for instance, five years ago, when we started this podcast, she would come to
the podcast studio in like a cropped windbreaker from the eighties. And I would be like, what the
are you wearing and then now they sell at urban outfitters and like every influencer on tiktok's
wearing it so she's like that girl but how do you how do you how does one and i speak for the
ladies of the lady gang out there listening who feel more like a kelty how does one create a
personal style well you you have a personal style even though you say you don't lame ass girl no
But that's how you want to identify your personal style.
But that's your choice to be that way.
If you wanted to be something else, you would be something else.
So your personal style is exactly who you are.
So personal style doesn't mean innovative or provocative or bold.
it it could be very quiet very understated and and there's a boldness in that too there's there's a
very aggressive approach to fashion by disregarding it so i i always whenever somebody says i have no
style it's like you have to be hello hello you definitely have style your style is to say you
not have style your style is your style sucks comfortable no but but I look at you and when
first of all we're all home right we're all sort of in cat I am in such casual mode that if I don't
get out soon on a regular basis my body's not going to know how to dress again and this is my
game. So I got to get out. And we all do, right? But when I look at you, I think your hair,
the color you're wearing, the lip color you have on, your nails, the whole thing. I think you have
style. I think you have great style. Let's talk about the book. So February 2nd, the book comes
out. It's available for pre-order right now. I am invincible. And it's not completely fashion.
This is sleep and diet and exercise and overall.
So what made you at this point in your career feel like this was the time to write this book?
Okay.
So the book is basically a handbook for women.
I take the center of the book and I divide it into decades.
And what I do is I tell the story about what women go through in each decade.
So in your 20s, how old are you guys?
how old are you 30s 30s late 30s 39 no all right and early 30s early 30s and then old
34 is not early anymore I'm not 34 yet all right so so the book the emphasis of the book
is aging with power and I wish I had a handbook and so I decided to do a handbook for women
So at 75, I feel I have a little experience. I've been around women for 53 years. So I have a little insight. So I take the 20s. I talk about all the discoveries, the experimentation, the how far do you go before you don't totally make a big fool out of yourself?
what do you what is what how much pain can you experience in discovering who you are the whole
20s thing and I tell my experience about my 20s and I told you a little bit about them in the
story about the marriage then 30 is huge as you all know 30 is a lot of tears are spent on 30
a lot of tears on the pillow like why is my life not where it should be right now where everybody
thinks it should be at this marker am I am I missing out is life passing me by all of that
anxiety but once you get over that and how you get over it really defines how you handle the
rest of your life. It's really a very meaningful transition. 30s, where you guys are, is what
you're doing. You're building your brand. You're developing and building and getting recognition
for what you're doing. And you're on that path. And now's the time where you put the energy in
that but you're also thinking if you're not with someone or you're not married how am i aged out of
the dating market is like being aged out is a big part of how age is looked at so i keep reinforcing
aging with power is key I met my soulmate at 65 I went to an astrologer in 1970 who told me
I'd never been to an astrologer she told me so much about my life my childhood she was scary
she was so right on and then she told me about my career that I was going to have and then she said
and you'll meet your soulmate at 65. And I said, I hate this woman. She's like, so wrong,
not going to happen. And of course, there you go. And so I actually met my soulmate at 65. And I,
I will tell you, I was not ready to meet my soulmate at 35 or 38 or 50. I wasn't, I, I was
with guys I had long relationships I didn't marry them because I intuitively felt like
no I don't need to get married I'm good you know I'm fine I'm good with this but I really needed
to work on myself and I needed to work on loving myself not in a narcissistic way but by really
loving yourself you attract people who will love and respect you and if you don't totally love
yourself and you have a little self-hate or just or insecurity or uh self-esteem issues that really
pull at you you know that gets picked up really fast and the really bad people come to you like
they like moths to a flame and they want they want to take advantage and so I had a lot of you
know fabulous experiences and being taken advantage of because I didn't take care of you know me and
working on me and it took me some time obviously to get it right um but so I I go through the 30s
40s what you're coming into next is amazing you guys if you stay on this path obviously
when you get to your 40s you cash in on your success you take that and then you you know
that's your platform for you know who you are like you are who you are now but that then you're there
and then 50 that's a whole other conversation about reinvention i love this so much and i love
i love aging with power it's everyone's like aging with grace aging with aging with power
is my new hashtag yeah and on that note we're gonna take a break when we come back

Maybe it's Jack. Definitely not Kelty. But anyways, I feel like I can speak on this because
I know how to chill out. I really do. And one of the ways that I like to unwind and chill is
cracking open a frosty frosty Coors Light beer. There's nothing like that feeling on a Saturday
afternoon like cracking open a beer and taking a sip and I love Coors Light because they have
these mountains on the cans and the bottles that literally turn blue when your beer is cold enough

okay and we're back so for the last segment of our podcast we have our listeners writing
questions about their lives and we try to give them some advice to fix their life
and no better person to have with us than you so question one comes from leslie and she says
i'm not your typical listener as i'm 47 divorced with a 21 year old son have an nba and i'm engaged
i love fashion and you all have amazing style and fabulous taste even though i have always wanted to
be different from everybody else i'm a professional who has to maintain a certain style of dress at
the office how can i still stand out in my fashion while not taking it too far what do you think
You know, there's something interesting that happens when we're little girls. If you think back to when pictures of you when you were six, right, you probably wore everything that you loved at the same time, like every pink thing or every whatever.
and there's a certain joy in just having things you love and I think nobody can pick out I can't
tell her what would be good for her because she has to allow herself to go online I mean
how easy is it to shop go online and what looks really great that she never thought would be right
for her but somebody else just get it have it shipped try it on at home play around with your
wardrobe and these pieces that you never thought you love them but you never thought they were for
you and then all of a sudden they can be for you but I refer to the six-year-old girl because she
has no edits she has no you know no that's not right or she's just loving certain things and
i i i don't think we ever took off the things we loved right so i think she has to go back to that
six-year-old in her and play and how easy is it the internet just gives you access to anything
at everything. Ship it to me and let me play and see if I like it. I love that. We have a major
issue with that in my house. My God, the packages. Okay. I know. Okay. Next question. What else do
we have now? We don't have packages coming to the house. What else is there? It's the only thing to
live for at the moment. Literally the only thing we look forward to. Okay. Second question comes
from k-type number two i've recently been thinking about cal t 3.0 as i've been doing some deep
diving and trying to get to the next stage in my life and how i feel about myself i need to glow up
and move beyond the stuff i've been dealing with in the past few years things are finally turning
around and i wondered if you had any other stuff you did actively or maybe just think about
retrospectively that you attribute to becoming cal t 4.0 this seems like a cal t directed question
Wow. This is so embarrassing that I'm on 4.0. Great question, K-Type. I actually think a lot
of what Norma's talking about in her book is a little bit of that 30s where for me, I was
trying to hustle so hard that I was not sleeping, that I was not eating, that I was not taking care
of myself at all because something had to give and I didn't want it to be career and I didn't
want it to be my relationship. So the thing that gave was myself. And I think that, you know,
that glow up is about, like you were saying, is just having the courage to like, take care of
yourself and invest in yourself and your body and your health and your sleep and your mind,
knowing that you want to be, you know, getting laid in your sixties and seventies and like
feeling amazing about your body. Like that is so inspiring to me. So that's, it's kind of my
thought is exactly what you're saying, probably pick up this book. It sounds like maybe we all
need these decade lessons. Seriously. But yeah, I think it's just the attitude about taking care
of yourself, not in like a, oh my God, I did a sheet mask on Sunday night, but like really putting
in the work to like yourself is the glow up. Yeah. I always cheat and I know that the people
I surround myself are going to elevate me if I choose wisely. So I'm the type of person where I
think it's a codependent thing where if I surround myself with people who
are operating at a certain vibration, I will match that. So I will seek out people who
make me feel good, but also inspire me to kind of take that next level, take myself to that next
level. So I do try to go inward, but to cheat it and get there a little faster, sometimes I'll
just try to surround myself with better humans that I want to kind of emulate. And that does
the trick it's like fake it till you make it gotta make them proud okay last question comes
from tina xoxo it's a gossip girl my question is one i know a lot of my friends have too but i was
inspired to send it can you ladies recommend some specific brands types or style names of shapewear
there are so many options out there it's overwhelming and i feel like the ones i've
tried don't ever work as well as i want them to norma do you have a go-to shapewear company that
you use i i don't wear shapewear no i don't do it no i just don't i i is this a moral decision
like you're not or comfort i i yeah i think there's something about shapewear um
that makes me feel like i'm telling a lie and so working out is a really good thing and so
you feel um like you don't have this little secret that you're really not good enough to
not wear shapewear so i think it does damage to your head it and i understand if there's an
occasion where it like you got to hold your stomach in no matter what and and the dress is
only going to work that way but overall the idea of shapewear to me puts a negative connotation in
my head about my worth and and my body and my body's not good enough so um I really invest in
working out and i feel better about it and that's why i feel better with my body with no clothes on
than i would if i were wearing shapewear and then i like have to take that off and then
everything i was hiding would come out so really cool so that's my my my approach to it is that
bullshit good information i mean i think this is really interesting i you know for me it's like
i like a something underneath like a white pant because i just feel like safer in some things
but i think this is a really great um again lesson pat to back to we should be trying to
do everything we can do to feel comfortable in our own skin and like ourselves the way we are
without having to eat. Yeah. But you're right. If, if it's under a white pant or some, or a fit
for something, but if it's, if, if it's something you depend on and it's part of the way you dress,
then I think working out more, finding different types of workout, changing the food you're eating
And to be able to feel good, without that on is a real, it's a very empowering feeling. It's really, you know, and for me, it takes so much more work than it would for you guys, because, you know, I'm working against hormones and all of the other things that become more challenging.
But I really say sleep diet exercise helps with that. It makes a big difference. And it's not taboo against shapewear, but I don't want it to be part of the way I think about myself.
