podcast i am jenna and sitting across from me is kevin mckale yeah you're listening at your
own risk good luck to you because we don't know what we're doing actually that's not fair jenna
knows what she's doing i mean i i you know fake it till you make it well and podcasts are just
about talking and we're very good at that yeah at least we think we are with one another here we go
let's go oh is this a fit do we change something do we have to start speaking differently because
Is this now like a legit thing?
Yeah.
I put my radio voice on.
Oh, yeah.
Remember?
Oh, it's so sexy.
Welcome to Jenna and Kevin's podcast, Showmance.
Keep going.
Ew.
That's weird.
Anyway, Kevin, tell me why you want to work with me again.
It's all I know.
It's like Stockholm Syndrome.
We're like, ah.
Well, that's nice of you.
I just got to get away.
It's like, oh, no.
I'll call Jenna.
We should do something more.
No, you know what it is, Jenna?
What?
We've been best friends for a long time.
How many years?
11 almost 11 years almost 11 holy oh look what we're 10 seconds in i've already cursed
it's okay um and you moved back to la because you abandoned me you went to new york listen i needed
i needed a detox i needed an la detox i like how people go to new york to detox when you're just in
the city of like exhaust yeah i blacked out that entire time i don't remember any of it i was
wasted from day one till you know of new york three yes every night don't you feel like when
you go to new york every night is like you're shaking you're hung over the next morning and
you didn't even mean to that sounds like a very specific experience to you or every day no i'm
kidding but i have i imagine that when you live there you don't do that every night well i don't
know what new york you're going to god anyway anyway here we are i'm really excited to do this
podcast because i feel like we have a lot of history yeah i'm back i'm ready to be with you
again and nobody else will give us work so here we are making it for ourselves i'm sweating because
that hit me really hard oh that's so true the other thing is too we realized we were talking
about if we could subject and force other people to listen to our stupid conversations
what we realized is there are a lot of people like us in our situations who have become best
friends through work right or who are actual couples right who have worked together where we
almost were a couple well wow we can get to that yeah people might have thought we were but people
did think we were kevin yeah if you google mikhailowitz or if you google jenna and kevin
the most romantic photo monaco yeah 2000 we can talk about that too we'll get to that we'll get
all that but we realized it's a really interesting dynamic that when you get to sort of our age you
your friend group has i think sort of solidified in a way where you know who your people are right
and especially in a town like los angeles cliche and you've heard it a billion times it's hard to
find your group as opposed to living in new york where people actually speak to one another when
they go out right here you find your friends and you hold on to them when you find people who are
great right not terrible that's good and fake point and when you work with those people it can
be hard you and i even live together so we have yeah i don't know how we made it out alive exactly
living together and working together at the same time so that's why i'm curious to talk to other
people too that we'll have on in future episodes exactly about this sort of dynamic of working
together being best friends or being in a relationship with one another and working
together right or working together and not fields and they're not working at all or you know what
they think is working and then doesn't work out at all it's all about that balance yeah i have to i
have yet to figure that out yeah i mean maybe that's the maybe there's no such thing as also
the thing about new york is also that you're forced to talk to people every day right that's
why i moved back to la i'm not kidding because i literally don't want to talk to somebody if i
don't have to. And so being in LA, like I have to make the conscious decision. Like today I'm
going to go outside and I'm going to see a friend. Well, this is the only way I could have you as a
friend. I'm like, Jenna, we have to have a podcast. We're going to make it work. And therefore you're
forced to talk to me. Are you going to pay me to talk to? No. Okay. But we're used to not getting
paid. So it's fine. It's great. There's nothing out of the ordinary here. I think we had a pretty
good showmance if you ask me. Yeah, we did. Do you want to explain the word showmance for people
who don't know what because i love the word so much i only learned the phrase showmance because
there's an episode of glee called showmance right episode two season and i'm not from the
the theater world the theater world so i don't know these terms and a showmance is basically
a romance between two people who meet working in the biz
right yeah i mean is that correct yeah you staring into my eyes like that when you said
that was yeah because you thought you had a chance okay that's fine i did think i had a chance there
was one point where chris colfer found a photo of you in my dresser drawer and the top dresser
drawer what i know you don't know this i was actually waiting till we recorded this for you
to tell you that literally chris had no no i didn't print it out chris printed it out
and chris put it in my dresser drawer of course he did and it was like one of your nlt photos i'll
have to find it and you were like doing the tiger look like i know exactly and um your hair was like
all along awful it was off wearing suspenders and you put and he put it in my dresser drawer so like
one night i opened it up and i saw this photo because he knew that i had like kind of had a
crush on you at that point so he printed it out and put it in my dress i the only one who didn't
know yeah it's still embarrassing why is it embarrassing because i didn't have a crush on you
Well, fair.
Well, it's not embarrassing because you're great, but you also don't like vagina, so.
Well, I was still figuring it out at that point.
Yeah, I didn't know that.
Right.
Well, I told you eventually.
Yeah.
I told you pretty early on.
Yeah, you did.
That's fair.
Yeah.
It was, I felt like I was in the circle.
Yeah, you were the first one I told.
Really?
Out of glee.
Oh.
I didn't have like coming out, quote unquote.
I know.
I think I just.
I think you actually came out to me before Chris Colfrey even came out to himself.
Maybe.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah, it was like you, Amber, and Chris and I would hang out all the time.
I was like, Jenna, I'm sorry, but I'm more into Chris than I'm into you.
I never came on to you, though.
No, you didn't.
You're very respectful.
To me, I was.
Like, I didn't know.
To me, I was.
All the time.
Oh, yeah, we've definitely made out.
We used to call it friend kissing.
Yeah.
Yeah, that was back up making sure that people knew that Kevin and I made out.
Yeah.
I'd make out with you again.
I don't think my boyfriend would like it, but I'd make out with you again.
Same.
Yeah, for sure.
Boyfriends can go be miserable together.
We'll always be great.
Yeah.
Doing a podcast and making out.
Yeah.
I dated a lot of gay men in my life, so this is not a surprise.
Maybe it's, I didn't know I was gay until you liked me.
That's my worst fear coming true, so thank you so much.
It pretty much happened like clockwork.
guys would come out after they would date me yeah it was incredible i'm kind of a gay man though so
i feel like i was like the transition maybe i was the transition for sure i i have a handful of men
who are gay like full-out boyfriends engaged and that's it and that's why tina loved blaine so much
was because the writers loved the idea that i dated gay men yeah so they're like why would
Tina had fallen in love with Blaine.
She knows he's gay.
Because Jenna can't resist herself.
Here we are.
I can't resist myself.
Jenna's got a strong type.
Got a really strong type.
Luckily, you broke that cycle.
I did.
For your own happiness and sanity.
I did.
Because, you know, that's always going to be a dead end, really, when you're going after gay boys.
Yeah, but you fixed that now because you got a new man's.
I do got a new man's and he couldn't be straighter.
That's true.
Thank God.
And lovelier.
It's warm in here.
Now it's warm.
I'm hot.
Are you talking about your man?
No.
Is he off limits?
You don't have to talk to him.
No, he's not off limits.
I love him.
He's off limits to you because he's straight.
Well, yeah.
I'm not going to.
I mean, yeah, I could be a hoe, but I'm not that much of a hoe.
Yeah.
I'm a hoe no more.
I'm reformed.
I have a question for you.
Uh-oh.
What was your first impression of me?
Can you tell everybody how we met, actually, for the first time?
Okay.
Do you not remember?
Yes, I remember.
You look, like, confused.
No.
He's like, Jenna and I, so Jenna obviously was living in New York and we had a test for
Glee and it was my second test at, okay.
Testing for a TV show is where you have to, it's like a second, third or fourth round.
It's right before you either get the job or don't get the job.
Does it give you bad memories?
Yeah.
Okay.
And just, it's the odd you know.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
Sorry.
So I was testing for Glee at 20th Century Fox, and there was two tests.
You have a studio test.
You have a network test.
Back in those days, you actually had to go between all of the suits, like a room full
of like 30 really intimidating, scary, old white people.
Right.
And now it's not, you know, luckily it's not all these.
We got like two more women and one person of color.
Yes.
So before it would just be like 50 old white men.
And now there's 47 old white men.
yeah and two women yeah and on the second test which i think was for the network yeah
jenna they flew in the people from new york that they wanted to test and jenna was one of them so
it was me and jenna and chris all testing on the same day and that's when jenna and i met
i had met chris two days before at the studio test right and we realized chris's situation of like oh
they wrote this role for you like at least like you got this gig right and he's like oh i don't
know and i'm like oh that's sweet but like you you got it kid well your book at the audition
was like somebody else testing for tina and there was somebody else testing for your role for arty
and it was just chris yes testing for against against himself so cool so he got it yeah and
then he got it like we didn't get it but we also got it we got it we got it oh the comeback oh the
days yeah and so that's how jenna and i met and then i just remember when they so when you were
testing and they brought you into the room they brought you both in the room at different times
different times and then they like brought you guys back in for a second time which none of us
had to do for the other yeah for the other roles nightmare because they changed originally tina had
a stutter she had turrets yeah and turrets she had turrets yeah yeah and so they brought you back in
to say drop the turrets and lower and subtle yeah subtle and i remember like your determination like
you came in that room and you're just like on it like i'm so embarrassed all the time in front of
other people yeah like having you know you walk into an audition room and people are like acting
out their lines and things oh this is terrible um and then you just went in there like i'm gonna
get this and you're like walking around the room like practicing and doing it i was like respect
she's going for it i don't remember this at all oh yeah i just remember you pacing back and forth
like behind a couch like doing this well i got hives on my flight on the way in because i was
so nervous so i don't there was a blackout period of you know the test i vaguely remember i also
think the biggest impression was you me amber and chris together for the first time where we were
all sort of like really unsure about everything but like it was only awkward for like 20 minutes
it's true that's true because that went away really quickly and then i remember going around
and they made you amber and chris sing because you guys had audition songs that's right in the
pilot that's right and i didn't so i didn't have to sing which was great that's right and then i
remember hearing you sing and hearing amber sing and hearing chris sing i was like oh okay everyone's
like legitimately talented i'm like this is cool this is great and everyone's nice and super
talented yeah what was your what are your what were your first impressions of me i'm trying to
remember um i i remember being completely well yeah obviously but i remember being completely
like blacked out at the studio network test so i vaguely like i remember us looking at each other
when ryan came in he's like are you guys nervous don't be nervous we're more nervous than you are
so much fun and kevin and i were like um and then i remember you were like you were just we had
rehearsals with zach our choreographer and we had we were doing sit down the rock in the boat and
that was like kevin's solo and you know thank you yeah yeah and you were in the wheelchair and you
were maneuvering the wheelchair so good but then you get up and dance and i was like oh this kid's
like in a boy band he's awesome um and then heart eyes emojis yeah and then i was like that's gonna
be my husband and that was it no i remember just being impressed by your um your cooperative
attitude being in that wheelchair and since the very beginning well yeah and your professionalism
likewise yeah i also think i was i looked up like to you i knew you had been on broadway
and all this i'm like i haven't done anything like that i should probably pay attention to them
but like being in dance rehearsal was very familiar to me because you know being in a boy band
you spend hours in dance rehearsal and recording studios so like the process of what we were doing
yeah was the exact same thing i had been doing for like years leading up to it but it was still
terrifying in terms of like i'm around all these professional people i don't know what i should
actually be doing very professional i remember going home to leah that night because she didn't
have to be at those rehearsals she's like tell me everything tell me everything about them and i
remember being like well kevin's really nice he's in a boy man and amber's got this massive voice
and chris is like really quiet but he's really sweet and that was like that was it yeah the rest
is history um what do you think do you think there was a moment where you and i sort of clicked like
oh this is gonna be it now for us yeah well we're best friends well here's the thing so i was really
close with chris during the pilot because you guys had all had your own lives in la already
like amber had her family here and you lived like hours away true it was 30 minutes but yeah it was
it's more like 45 um yeah so chris and i were the ones like the ones who had were put up here
and like you know stayed at the palazzo on third and you know had no lives here so we definitely
bonded that we bonded over that time but i think it was when we actually and this is ironic and
i'm just remembering this it was during showmans and we started to click you guys would come over
to my house at night after we would shoot and we would like hang out and we would drink and we
were like dance and then i remember it's a nice way to put it yeah we'd get obliterated yeah we
would get wasted but some of us really don't know where we're in so we're not gonna talk about that
um but i remember us drinking red bull to do push it yes and we have all these photos of us together
like taking selfies on our camera that's what comes to mind when i think that was it i think
that was the time well when you have to practice a dance of everyone humping each other for three
weeks you really form a bond wasn't there a point where like we were finishing shooting that and we
were sitting in a circle on the floor like all you know like the six of five of us six of us and
we were like guys i'm really horny i don't think so i think that was in your head no somebody said
it and i don't remember who it was i thought it would be in in true like form probably yeah i
don't know if i would have said that i'm shy i don't know if i would have said that i don't i
think you would have and i think you did i feel like cory probably said that maybe that sounds
like but also like i think it might have been you if i said i feel like i'm gonna be really
creeped out i was like oh my god that's my husband he's the one um i do remember us getting
in trouble when we were talking in a circle during don't stop believing and they were shooting mats
no no we were we were dancing and being assholes oh yes for matt's coverage and he had to cry and
be like all happy that like the glee club was coming together and ryan screamed at us we were
being dicks we totally deserved this horrible i went home and cried we didn't know i was terrified
i was like oh god i'm gonna get fired i finally get a job and this is how it ends do you want to
talk about do you want to talk about monaco okay we will get to that but we're gonna come back
When we come back, we'll get into Monaco, all the juicy stuff, the actual showmance aspect of it.
And then we'll ask each other some questions that we'd actually ask future guests.

Now back to Showmans with Kevin and Jenna.
And we're back.
We're going to ask each other some questions because I feel like we can't expect our guests to answer questions that we're not willing to ask and answer ourselves.
Right.
Right?
You can't serve it.
What is it?
You can't serve it until you dish it.
Wow.
No, I'm not going to help you.
Keep going.
Come on.
You can't.
Connect the dots.
Well, you can't see as Becca is literally peeing her pants.
You can't serve it.
Nope.
You can't dish it until you...
You got served.
What is it, Kevin?
Please help me.
I'll poop my pants.
No, you got it.
We'll get to it.
I want it.
It's going to hit you at some point, and then you're going to scream it out, and then you
win the game.
Or it won't ever come back.
Yeah, it might not.
I'll reward you with it at the end of it.
Okay, you keep thinking.
okay i'm gonna ask you a question oh my god i'm crying okay okay do you think um how do you think
we balanced the whole dynamic of spending literally every waking moment with one another
because we worked together for yeah 15 to 16 hours a day and then at some point we also lived
together but even when we weren't living together we would all just hang out with one another
anyway yeah how do you think or why do you think we were successful and not letting that sort of
make our relationship not work because i feel like that alone spending that much time with anybody
yeah can really put a lot of pressure no i agree i think it's very particular to you and i like i
think that we have we the way we function and the way that we are and like operate is very similar
in a way and yet we're like so different no that doesn't make sense no it did but i think no i
But I think we're really similar in, like, the sense that we're, like, super chill.
We're, like, go with the flow kind of peeps.
Like, we don't – we're not one of – like, one of us isn't super, like, picky about stuff.
So I'm like, where do you want to eat?
Like, let's go here.
Cool.
Great.
Awesome.
Let's go.
Like, it's, like, a chill vibe that we have that's just – it is very specific to our friendship and, like, knowing each other so well and knowing, like, when you see, like, the fire start in my eyes, like, on set.
Or when we're out with somebody that's pissing me off, you're very good at giving me space, at least from the way I feel about it.
We're really good at knowing when we need time and when we need to be consoled or supported or just words of encouragement or whatever.
So cheesy, whatever that is.
I felt like the biggest indicator of why it worked or how it worked was when you and I lived together, we lived together for two years.
Yeah.
And it's that thing of when you're hanging with somebody you're really close with and
you don't feel the need to talk.
Right.
Or like the pressure to like, oh, it's silent.
We just got to talk because this is uncomfortable.
Right.
Where you and I could just sit there.
Yeah.
And not say anything and not even think that we're like.
There's something wrong.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And we could just be.
Yeah, it's true.
And it was also because we shared the exact same experience every day.
It's true.
If there is something we needed to like vent about, we knew where the other person was
coming from because we're having a very specific experience.
Right.
You're also the devil's advocate and be like, I was there.
I saw it.
I don't think it was meant this way or it was.
There's just a nice perspective that we each had for each other.
And I also think living together is so specific and it works or it doesn't.
I've had roommates that it has not worked at all.
And I don't know what we were thinking that we were like, yeah, this is just going to work.
And we work 15 hours every day together as well.
Not a thought.
yeah um but yeah we we gave each other space like we liked our own space too we like being by
ourselves whereas i feel like i had i saw this ad the other day for a friend um whose roommate she
had just moved out she was like i cannot with this girl i'm done and so the um she saw the ad that
the other girl posted for the to like fill the room and it was like looking for a friend looking
for someone who wants to hang and like chat and not just hide in your room and i was like worst
night yeah no no no worst nightmare no so you know it's nice that like you lived upstairs i
lived downstairs like if i didn't come up oh my god are we really getting into that right now
no we're gonna talk about the ghost um we can talk about the ghost if you want uh but yeah it
was nice like if i didn't want to come upstairs and i don't want to see you i don't have to come
upstairs yeah i have to see it was also great because as us weekly called it oh my god we lived
in the love nest the laurel canyon and that was dubbed because we went to monaco and we saw all
this paparazzi wait hold on let me okay let me backtrack a little bit okay right after the first
season of glee after the first tour right there is a tv festival in monaco every year that i did
not know existed and it seemed very fancy and i had never been to europe before and one of our
who ended up being one of our best friends worked in the publicity international department at fox
matt morrison canceled going to monaco yes because everyone gets to go and you get a plus one right
and we told her that we wanted to travel oh my god and so she called us and we were each other's
plus one because we couldn't get a full invite ourselves and so we're like yeah we'll go and
had the time of our lives we did and it was like us and jane and a couple of the producers yeah
and yeah we were swimming one day as you do in the mediterranean right and there was yeah one
paparazzi guy and we were like he thinks this is leah and cory like right right this ain't
like what you'll see it in like the monaco daily you know yeah like this isn't gonna go anywhere
and then one of the producers on the show was like you guys should act like you're like flirting
we're like okay great so he's like we're like okay so we're just gonna come up from the water
and like hugging and like look lovingly at each other and not no joke that's what we said to each
other and that is the photo we should yeah i will post that photo but it is unbelievable and then we
had our families texting us the next day because i remember it was all over like well there's also
more photos that kevin was like i'm gonna come over and whisper in your ear now well because
then we went to yeah and then i was like i'm gonna dunk you yeah and those photos ended up
everywhere it was more publicity than i've ever gotten in my entire career literally no joke yeah
we and then like no reason the next week's tabloid was us weekly called they heard that we were
moving together that summer yep and they called it the love nest yes which we then all adopted
yes and call the love nest and it was ground zero for all of our glee parties and mischievous
moments oh yeah yeah you get a hangover just thinking about it i know honestly well i had
that wine club remember like my parents signed me up for so we had like 50 bottles and we didn't
drink wine at that terrible wine it was horrible so when we'd have i kept the wine at the love nest
you kept the wine after we moved out you're like you want to be like no i don't want the wine i'm
like well i can't let this go it's free wine so i took it oh and then i went through all the bottles
i anyway recently and it was all disgusting no i had to pour it all out it was terrible
yeah then we went to london and there are all these paparazzi pictures i'm like jenna
when you leave the hotel let me hold my hand yep yep it was great it was awesome the people
thought we were together i was like oh no it's gonna look like i'm making you be my beard but
it was really like oh we're getting attention this is stupid let's put them oh it did go on
for a while we let it go on for a while i love it i still love it yeah it was we'll post those
photos for sure um yeah it's funny i have this question here and it's like do you push each
other's buttons and do you fight a lot and i don't we just don't we're not those people
we're way too calm we're also so self-deprecating that like we don't have time to make fun of each
other because we're making fun of ourselves and we're actually like we're usually we interpret
things the same where it's like if you're getting upset about something if i'm getting upset about
something i completely get it yeah it's true like 100 of like oh you should be getting upset about
it it's totally fine that you feel upset about it right like i'll talk you through this um what do
you aside from us what do you think makes a good work wife or couple work or relationship work where
you're intertwined as friends or romantically involved and working together i think it's that
thing that we have where this like innate instinct of the balance like we had the balance like we
were just talking about of giving each other space but also being really positive and beneficial for
one another in terms of i could read you you could read me and i think when you're not putting too
much pressure on the situation and you're letting it be where we are both so chill right that i feel
like if you and i were not that way we'd be getting on each other's throats because of the amount of
time we spent with one another so i feel like it's maybe just like feeling secure in your friendship
or relationship with one another knowing that like we don't have to talk about this right now
but i know they get it right i'll have them if i need to talk about this or dresses later well
well said i don't know i'm sort of just rambling well said well you're so smart that like when you
ramble it's still like really smart i also think a big aspect of it is you are super type a and i
am not type a yeah but you're the chillest type a person i've ever met for example when we missed
our flights in new york we were all in new york for up front up front is like a thing where you
go to new york all the networks present their slate of new tv shows for the fall to advertisers
and it's a really strange thing it was the first time our cast was in new york all together which
again going back to it new york shaky hangover well this was the work so we had our flight was at
7 a.m so we had to leave at 4 30 in the morning to go to the airport we were out all night yeah
and the thing is the night i fell up the stairs we had to make that flight because we were going
to straight from the flight to go to the finale of american idol and our the pilot was premiering
after and they were going to sit us in the audience and show us on camera so we had to all
be there so cut to us out at like 3 a.m apparently or 4 a.m yeah still going for it and i wake up
sun shining at like 8 a.m like ah it's a beautiful day in new york oh my god my flight was two hours
ago yeah i never missed a flight in my entire life yeah i'm a goody two-shoes yeah i never even got
detention in school yeah like this was the worst thing i had ever done you missed your your flight
and i wake up and i have all these poor sweet chris i have all these missed calls and texts
from chris like hey we've been trying to call you we knocked on your door we had security come knock
on your door you're not answering i hope you guys are okay um we have to go to the airport okay bye
and we were sharing a car with them so they were like worried they were gonna leave us
and then i call you immediately and you pick up yeah which was wild because you also had
a bunch of missed calls and texts.
Yeah. And I was like,
we missed our flight. And I'm like, Jenna, we missed our flight.
And you're like, okay. Now, here's the
interim part also. More type A.
I had pre-packed my bag, laid
out my outfit, and I was still in my
dress from the night before. I'm an idiot.
Well, I did not do any of that.
I was still in my clothes from the night before.
Yeah, me too, but you were laid out.
But my clothes were everywhere, all over the room.
But I just threw them in a bag real quick. And then Jenna calls me
back and is like, meet me downstairs in 10 minutes.
I'm like, oh, thank God.
She has a plan.
Then we get downstairs.
I'm like, what's the plan?
She's like, I don't know.
Like, we got to buy tickets.
And then this little kiosk in the lobby.
Yeah.
And we bought tickets.
With a computer.
I bought us two Virgin America tickets, both middle seats, because we missed our first
class flight.
And we got on that last flight out.
We paid for them because we're like, screw it.
We got to pay for these.
This is our fault.
We got to get our cab.
We're going.
I almost threw up in the cab.
I remember I had to go lay down in the back because it was awful.
We got there.
We got back to L.A. and we told the executives, we're like, you have to reroute our car to go literally stop at Kevin's house, stop at my house, and go straight to the American Idol studios.
We did that.
I was still – I ended up having to wear my upfront dress because I had nothing else and my hair was still, like, hairsprayed and, like, messed up.
I was so greasy.
I had to throw it in a ponytail.
I was so gross.
No time for hair and makeup.
No time for any of that.
And what did we do?
We made it, Kevin McHale.
We made it.
That camera came on to us in the audience and we were like, we've been here the whole
time.
We didn't start playing.
No.
I remember we showed up and everyone else from Glee that was in New York was already
there like walking in and they all started clapping and they're like, what the hell happened?
And then everybody thought, which I don't even think crossed our minds.
Right.
Everybody thought.
We were in the same room.
Yes.
Woken up.
Yeah.
In my dreams we were.
Well, obviously I totally would have been down for that.
We were in separate rooms and we missed our flight.
Passed out like idiots.
People are still like to the amber.
night of love and passion oh god what a waste amber to this day was like y'all were still in
the same room i'm like no we weren't everyone was talking about everyone we would have told you
no honestly we would have told them by now yeah i would have told everybody idiots
why did we start talking about that story oh because you're so type a and in that moment i
was like oh jenna's the one i gotta keep her around because she just saved us so quickly
like i would have just shut down like i'm not gonna make it you guys this is it i'm so sorry
i'm getting fired and enjoy american idol without me i hope the pilot goes well because
but you got us like you saved my ass oh little kevin mccale yeah you taught me so much about
now like to this day and age i feel like you would have been like i got it yeah and now i
could do it yeah because you taught me that oh i've over and over again honored i feel honored
if i could share my psycho ocd type a just a little bit i just pick up a little bit because
i'm not type a at all so i have a question yeah like a fun stupid question okay and then we can
move on yeah we should do the really weird third part of this show which i'm really excited about
but if you were stranded on a deserted island and you could take three people with you in your life
to help you survive on that island.
Whoa.
Would I make the cut?
Yes, Kevin.
Don't lie to me.
Yes, Kevin.
Why?
Why would I make the cut?
What do you think I could bring to the table?
Becca's shaking her head because she thinks he wouldn't.
I don't think I would either.
I think you'd be an idiot to invite me.
I'm stupid.
You're not stupid.
I got all these ailments.
Are you kidding me?
I'll be broken down within two days.
Hey, wait.
I've never really thought about this before.
Who would I take with me?
Yeah.
But I would take David.
Yeah.
I would take David there, too.
I'm like, he can protect us.
He's a smart guy.
I feel like...
Zach, I would just take everybody.
Everybody's, like, significant others.
These are some strong men.
Honestly, the other person, if I had to bring another female badass, would be Becca.
So, you know, like...
Are you saying that because she's in the room?
No, that's true.
I would take her.
But...
I think you guys would be good.
Yeah, I think so.
You guys would...
Remember when we tried to be on The Amazing Race?
I know.
We tried to be on The Amazing Race.
And then when Becca, due to contractual things, couldn't, I was like, Kevin, do you want to
come on The Amazing Race?
You are my number two, number one.
Okay.
Here we are.
That's fine.
Is that fair?
Do you take that?
Yeah.
That's fine.
See, you would be on The Desserted Race.
I would trust you two to get through The Amazing Race more than I would trust me with either
of you.
Because you guys are smart and you're problem solvers.
Here's the thing about it.
You get things done.
I feel like you've got that innate thing.
I feel like you'd be a good fisher.
I feel like you would know how to –
Oh, you are mistaken.
Honestly, I believe you can do it.
If I can teach you how to book a flight and make a flight somewhere out of New York, I feel like I could teach you this.
Well, if you already knew how to do it, you would have –
This is a teaching moment, Kevin.
Well, you don't take me to a deserted island to save your life to teach me something.
Yeah, that's fair.
All right.
I'm being nice.
It's fine if I wouldn't make the cut.
I think you would.
I would bring you.
So me, Becca, and David.
Two tiny people and one tall guy.
Yeah.
Three tiny people.
Yeah, that's bad.
I maybe need to cut somebody for a taller person.
I would bring, like, The Rock with me.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah.
Do you know him personally, though?
No.
Does it have to be a personal thing?
Sure.
For the sake of this.
Gosh.
I need somebody who's, like, an Eagle Scout or something like that.
Was Zach an Eagle Scout?
I knew he was.
He could like – yeah.
Honestly, you only need Zach.
Would I make your deserted island list?
I think you would.
Yeah.
I do think you would.
Okay.
Because you are so smart and you're – I also think like if we were getting down about something like we're going to die in the sun, you'd be like, no, absolutely not.
Everyone get it together.
Sorry, those claps really loud.
No, sometimes I feel like there's days I want to give up and I'm like, well, this could never happen.
I just give up too easy.
so i think i appreciate your your belief in me yeah shall we you know i was just trying to like
i was gonna throw that phrase back at you right now and now i can't remember it if you can't
if you can dish it you can if you can't take it if you can what yeah i know we're missing
something out but you can't take it yeah so if you're gonna dish it out if you can
If you're going to do that, you've got to be able to take it.
Yeah, it's something like that.
Anyway.
You can't take it if you can't serve it.
There's nothing about serving.
There's no serving here.
You can't dish it if you can't.
It's dish.
Yeah, and taking.
Dishing and taking.
This is what I'm saying, though.
Here's the thing.
I'm not that smart.
You can't dish it.
No.
Okay.
All right.
All right.
So when we come back, you're going to find out something very weird and new to me about
Kevin McHale.
Full of surprises.
kevin what are you working on what do you mean besides this wonderful podcast that's my least
favorite question revolutionary what are you up to what are you doing well this week is a busy week
because the podcast is starting now today hello but also i am putting out music that's right
because i'm a masochist this is really exciting though i've been waiting for this for a really
long time thanks jenna you're always my number one fan i am i've heard some of the music right

go search help me now and watch the lyric video and the music video will be out in a couple weeks
have fun bye i hate talking about myself
help me now i'm getting caught up in 10 feet of water stirring at the bottom yeah help me now
sorry i brought up all this shit please let me tomorrow yeah help me now
And we're back.
And I want to talk about something that I learned about Kevin McHale, about you, very recently.
I'm not surprised, but it's something that I didn't know.
So Kevin really likes to give wedding advice.
Kevin is not married.
Nope.
Kevin has been to a handful of weddings.
I've been to a lot of weddings.
Yeah, okay.
You've been to a lot of weddings.
You've been to a lot of weddings.
But he's very good at giving advice.
So this is where I believe that this is so.
I just never knew this.
Here's what happens.
I love weddings.
Always.
Since I was a child, tear up that dance floor.
Well, I believe that.
Yeah.
And all the older men, you dance with their wives and things.
I shined on the dance floor at weddings.
It's really, you know.
You shine wherever you go.
Thank you.
Yeah.
And I've had so many friends, like close friends, get married recently because we're getting up there in age.
It's what people do apparently.
Yeah, I guess so.
That people would come to me to ask me advice about like, yo, my mom is acting like this.
Yeah.
My future mother-in-law is being like this or this bridesmaid wants this happening or this guest is flaking on me because they're going to Beyonce.
What do I do?
Wait, straight up.
I feel like you get really sound.
I will say this.
My friend had her wedding, and she planned her wedding, and they announced a couple weeks
later that Beyonce and Jay-Z were going to have a concert there, a concert like two miles
away on the same night.
But Beyonce and Jay-Z had two shows, and she had people not show up to her wedding because
they had Beyonce and Jay-Z tickets.
I mean, I respect that.
You know, Beyonce is my number one, but at the same time, I'm like, guys, there's a second
night.
There is a second night.
So, the other thing is, besides me loving weddings and giving pretty sound, pretty okay
wedding advice, I feel like you've also been to a billion weddings, and you've been in
so many weddings.
I have been in quite a few weddings.
I think we'll be a good pair at this, because we sent out a little thing on Instagram, asked
people to write in their questions about weddings, and if they wanted advice, and so we combed
through it.
I actually didn't think we were going to get many responses, and immediately we got all
kinds of responses.
Great ones.
Like even from some of our really close friends.
And it's amazing because weddings are a really weird sort of thing.
Like the stakes are high.
That's what it feels like to people all around.
Exactly.
People in the weddings, family involved, people who are getting married, obviously.
And it just feels like we've been in this world where like it's supposed – there's this one way that it's supposed to happen and that's not true at all.
So I just think like you got to go with your gut.
Yeah.
And I generally, as a rule of thumb, I will just preface all of this with, I feel like weddings can be so expensive.
They take up so much time.
There's just a lot of emotion and anxiety surrounding it.
And it's really hard for the people who are actually getting married to enjoy it.
Right.
And so generally, I'm always like, as a rule of thumb, if you're the ones that are getting married, screw everybody else and do what you want to do.
Right.
Exactly.
Your wedding, your day, your pay.
So do you want to pick one?
Yeah.
We're going to pick.
We're each going to pick one and we're going to share it with one another.
And we're going to give some advice that maybe you shouldn't follow.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Wedding advice.
This is a fun one.
I thought we could start out with this because I thought this was kind of fun.
I feel like you're going to pick a more serious one.
Maybe not.
So this is a question we got that I feel is kind of fun and we'll have very specific opinions on.
um so my girl and i want to have our wedding on halloween should our guests come in costume
hot take i'll just spit no no next question no no right but hold on i i do have to play devil's
advocate as i do okay so i would say as the people getting married my only thinking is is that they
did this intentionally right on halloween so therefore obviously they it's whatever they want
that their venue was available and they had to choose halloween and then they're like oh crap
like these people are going to come to our wedding on halloween are they gonna want to show up in
i guess it's like costume optional i don't know would you want to go to a wedding in a halloween
costume it's different it's a lot of hours and a really uncomfortable costume well you don't
choose an uncomfortable costume i just think how do you look sexy then sexy red riding hood
sexy red riding hood um okay here's the thing yeah i guess for the guest i'm gonna go with
as a guest no i don't want to show up on costume but if i'm having my if i'm the bride i'm having
my wedding on halloween you show up in costume good you do what i want they just need to make
it clear whoever's having the wedding you just have to pick it and make it what you want super
explicitly clear okay all right give me your question okay my question or not your question
so this person wrote and said i'm the maid of honor for one of my friends and it was a shock
i thought we were naturally drifting apart and she thought maid of honor advice for the speech
wtf do i say i don't even know who you're marrying oh that's a tough one that is a tough one okay
here's my two cents yes that's really complicated that's really complicated here's the thing if
you're gonna do it i here i would have a conversation first and be like are you sure
are you sure you want me to be your maid of honor are you sure this is you know and if you are and
like that's great you're gonna give your speech and you're gonna go about all the things that
you loved about that person when you were the closest of friends or you know what she thought
about the you know when she was looking like you know and single and what she was looking for and
what made her you know pick this person and you know all of her great attributes i think is is a
great way to go if you don't know who the other person is yeah um and i also think you know there's
a way to yeah that's it that's those are my two cents i think that's very sound advice thanks
because i think if you've already accepted right because if you haven't then i think the thing
would be have a combo is to give them an out right to be like are you sure yeah like i this is a huge
honor i totally get it but like i know we haven't been that close i don't have a relationship with
this person and if you feel like there is somebody who better represents both of you right then feel
free i won't be offended however i stand by exactly what you said or if you're gonna do it
then you have to be like look i grew up with this person right i trust their judgment and if you
think this person is wonderful then i can't get i can't wait to get to know them right and this is
the way i look you know and this is what i love so much about this person and i loved about our
friendship and i love about you know you have to use what you know so if you haven't been friends
in a long time you're not gonna lie don't lie that's number one don't lie it's okay that you
don't know that person that well because again it's the bride and grooms it's people getting
married choice there's got to be a reason why she asked you so yeah yeah and i think yeah there's
definitely a convo for for that to happen if if if you haven't accepted yet kevin you're you are
really good at this no you what are you talking about i just repeated what you said no and a
and a little no and like a little roundabout way it's the exact same thing you said um okay so
here's one more can i do one act bonus okay go for it my cousin's wedding is coming up and she's
struggling on keeping three bridesmaids limit that she wants to set so she's debating if she
She'd keep it just sister, sister-in-law, and blood-related, or have her best friends
instead, or have more than three.
What's your opinion?
I got it.
Go.
Trim it.
Trim the fat.
Yeah.
No drama.
Do nothing.
Fam.
Keep it family.
Fam band.
And that way, nobody can complain about anything.
And you don't have to worry about explaining why, and you don't have to.
And honestly, I think the smaller the wedding party up there, the classier it looks.
And it's going to be less people that you have to worry about getting the right outfit
and all that.
It's just a lot.
It seems like a lot.
I've been in a lot of weddings.
It's a lot.
The less you have to put on yourself, the better.
So I think, yeah, trim the fat.
Good job, Kevin.
Thank you.
I'm hired.
I think we did it.
I think we did it.
All right.
Well, I honestly, high five, Kevin.
