Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Breaking the Cycle: How to Stop Having the Same Fight Over and Over Again
Episode Date: October 29, 2025Did you know that if you keep leaving relationships because you’re tired of having the same arguments, you’ll probably end up having those same fights in the next one too? It doesn’t always mean... you’re not compatible. Most of the time, it simply means there’s something still needs healing. In this episode of The Language of Love Sessions, I answer a question from a listener named Carrie. She wrote in because she and her partner keep fighting in circles. Same argument, same frustration, and she’s starting to lose hope that things will ever change. I get it. It’s exhausting. But what I’ve learned after decades of working with couples is that repeating arguments aren’t just about who’s right or wrong. They’re often a mirror showing us the patterns and pain we haven’t yet healed. Our relationships have this beautiful way of bringing up the stuff that’s ready to be worked on if we’re willing to look at it. In this session, I talk about: Why you keep finding yourself in the same kind of fights How to take responsibility for your part in the pattern The difference between incompatibility and unhealed wounds How to turn conflict into a chance for connection instead of disconnection Why doing your own healing work changes every relationship you have If you’ve ever thought, “Why does this always happen to me?”, this episode is for you. Because real change doesn’t start by finding someone new. It starts by getting curious about yourself. If you’d like me to answer your question on the show, send me an email at languageoflovepod@gmail.com or leave me a voice note at speakpipe.com/languageoflove. Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, and for the last 30 years,
I've been helping people learn to love and be loved better.
Welcome to the Language of Love Sessions.
This is where I get to work with you one-on-one, on air.
You, my listeners, my goal in these sessions is to empower you to enjoy better relationships,
both with others and with yourself, and to help you embrace how precious and sacred your body,
your love life, and your sexuality really is. It's time we all become fluent in the language of love.
Okay, this is a language and love session where I get to answer your questions. Whatever is on
your mind, I'm here for you. You can come on the show live if you want, and we can talk directly
You could just email me if you want to do that at languageoflovepod at gmail.com.
And you can also leave voice notes if you want to.
Just go to speakpipe.com slash languageoflove.
But you can also just email a question, which is what Carrie did.
Carrie's question says, hey, Dr. Berman, my partner and I fight in cycles and always seem
to end up back in the same argument.
We love each other, but I'm tired and starting to lose hope.
Is it possible to break these patterns, or does it mean we're just not compatible?
Well, Carrie, I mean, perhaps you're not compatible, but the truth is what I find in relationships
like you describe is that this is probably a pattern.
My guess is that in most of your relationships, there are things that you argue about.
there are ways that you fight in cycles as you say and the truth is even if that's not the case
and I've been doing this for 30 years so I can promise you this whatever is going on in this
relationship if you leave this relationship without really working on the communication
issues and what's underneath them I can promise you that you're just going to carry that stuff
to the next relationship and the next one after that, because the truth is that our relationships
not only are a beautiful way to love and be loved, they are a living laboratory that is going to
trigger our deepest wounds, our deepest growth edges.
Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman. I've been a sex, love and relationship therapist for over 30 years.
And the main question I always get asked is, how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term
monogamous relationship?
Well, if you want to take your love life, your sex life to the next level, whether you're
in a relationship or not, check out my free course on quantum sex.
It's going to teach you how to take your sexual response to the next level, capable of full
body orgasms, how to use sex magic to manifest your dreams and how to connect on an even deeper
level sexually with your partner. Just go to drlauraberman.com and you'll find it right there
on the homepage, the quantum sex free course. Check it out. Let me know what you think.
so they're really a beautiful soul school and an opportunity to grow your relationship skills
your communication skills to move through old traumas and old patterns that no longer serve
so yes you could bail on this relationship but you're going to find yourself in a similar one
down the line, maybe in a different flavor, but the dynamics are going to be similar.
So what I would recommend instead of bailing on the relationship, assuming it's not abusive,
that's a key element, get support from a good couples coach or couples therapist who can
help you navigate how to have these discussions and how to hear each other in a way that will
land and help each of you take your hundred percent, because in every love relationship,
each of you has a hundred percent that you're bringing to the issues. So if each of you are
able to recognize what you're bringing to the table, that's contributing to the problems,
the way you may be shutting down, the way you may be pointing the finger of the blame,
the way you may not be willing to see your role in things, the way you may be being passive
aggressive, the way you may not be speaking up for yourself sooner and waiting for things to
boil over, the way you're not necessarily maybe hearing your partner. And of course,
your partner is doing the same. This is a beautiful opportunity, not only to save your
relationship, but like I say to couples that I treat all the time, even if goodness forbid,
your relationship doesn't work out. And usually if they're working with me, it works out in the
end, but even if it doesn't work out for some reason, you are going to take everything you
learned into the next relationship. And that one will be so much better. So long story short,
Carrie, don't throw in the towel until you really get support because a couple that fights in cycles
is an ideal candidate for couples therapy. I hope that helps. And remember, I'm always here to help
you love and be loved better. Just reach out to me via email or through SpeakPipe and I will get
you on the show and get to your questions. See you next time on the Language of Love Sessions.
Roll me a prescription, but there's no cure.
