Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, and for the last 30 years,
I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be loved better.
Welcome to the Language of Love Bites, where I tackle your most asked questions and requested
topics.
These episodes are designed to be fun, quick, and to the point.
It's time we all become fluent in the language of love.
so I'm sure you've heard about Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater and relationships in the spotlight
are hard enough but when there's an affair involved it's like a bomb went off there was
recently an essay in the cut written by Ethan Slater's wife who happens to be a therapist
who shared how difficult the affair has been for her as well as the breakup they've gotten a lot
immediate attention. But here's what I want to focus on here. You don't have to be famous
to feel this kind of betrayal. But there are ways to protect your relationship, to affair-proof
your relationship from the kind of breakdown that leads to infidelity. And at the end of this
episode, I've got something incredibly helpful to share with you that will really make sure
that you keep your connection strong and you make it much less likely that infidelity will happen.
Now, here's what you need to understand. Affairs rarely happen because someone is evil or heartless.
Now, that once in a while does happen if someone's a sociopath or an extreme narcissist,
but most of the time, affairs happen when there's a disconnection, a gap between partners
that someone has slipped into and in between, where one of you is open. Now, part of it is
opportunity, right? And if you're a celebrity, there's lots of opportunity. But there are plenty
of celebrities with lots of opportunities who don't cheat. So it's not about policing your
partner's every move. Affair-proofing your relationship is about connection, intention,
and intimacy. So let's dive into this. First, let's talk about the power of emotional check-ins.
Most people think they know how their partner is feeling, but they're really operating on
autopilot, especially in a busy long-term relationship. So stopping and even asking
your partner, what's been on your mind this week? What's something that you've been needing from me
and maybe haven't told me about? These questions are like glue for your relationship.
they keep you emotionally synced. Next, let's get real about keeping desire alive. It's easy
to let intimacy slide when life is getting busy, but neglecting it will create a gap.
And into that gap can come someone else. So you want to plan a date night, even send some spicy
texts during the day. Remember that in long-term relationships, desire isn't just spontaneous,
It's created.
And if you want to learn how to create more desire in your relationship, make sure to
watch some of the videos I've made on that topic.
You'll find a link to some of those videos in the show notes of this episode.

and here's a big one for a fair proofing your relationship boundaries people do not talk enough
about this having clear boundaries with people outside your relationship is a game changer you
can be friendly with a co-worker but constant texting late at night not so much healthy
boundaries were going to protect the sacred space of your relationship. So the golden rule of thumb
is that you should not be behaving, texting, talking, doing anything that you wouldn't do
with your partner standing right next to you or looking over your shoulder. If you follow that
rule of thumb, you will be much safer when it comes to a fair proof in your relationship and
you'll much more readily avoid a slippery slope that can lead you into a really difficult
situation.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
This is great, but what if my relationship already feels shaky?
What if I'm scared it's too late?
Well, hang tight because in just a minute, I'm going to share a powerful tool that can
help rebuild intimacy, even if the trust has been tested a little bit.
Here's the golden nugget that I call the love audit.
it. Once a week, I want you to sit down with your partner and answer these two questions.
What's one thing you did that made me feel loved this week? And the second question you're going
to answer, what's one thing I can do next week to make you feel more loved? So the first question
you answer about what your partner did to make you feel loved, each of you do this. And the second
question your partner answers about what you can do to make them feel more loved. Make sure to
answer in the positive. So it's like not, you can make me feel more loved if you don't ignore me or
if you're not a jerk, right? You're going to say, you can make me feel more loved by spending a
little undistracted quality time with me, maybe taking a walk or having a picnic somewhere,
right? So you do it in the positive, what they can do to make you feel more loved. It's simple,
but it actually works magically to keep the connection strong
and prevent resentments from taking root.
Relationships are not easy, but they are definitely worth the effort.
And when you take these steps to a fair proof your connection,
you're not just protecting your relationship,
you're actually strengthening it in ways that will bring you closer than ever.
So there you go.
Hopefully this gives you some guidance to a fair proof your relationship.
