Hey, I'm sex, love and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman. And for the last 30 years,
I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be loved better. Welcome to the
Language of Love Bites, where I tackle your most asked questions and requested topics.
These episodes are designed to be fun, quick and to the point. It's time we all become
fluent in the language of love. How to stop overthinking during sex. So have you ever been
in the middle of sex and suddenly found yourself thinking about the laundry or if your stomach
looks bad in that position or if your partner is really enjoying it? There's nothing wrong with you.
You're just in your head. So today we're going to be talking about why so many of us overthink
during sex, what's actually happening in your brain and your nervous system, and how to gently
guide yourself back into your body and into your pleasure. At the end of this video, I'm going to
walk you through a simple, powerful practice from Sex Magic, my latest book, that can help you shift
from overthinking to deep embodied receiving. So first, let's just normalize that overthinking
is incredibly common, especially for women. We're multitaskers by nature. It's how our brains are
wired. And arousal is deeply woven into feeling emotionally safe, relaxed, and attuned. But your
brain is running a commentary. Do I look okay? Am I taking too long? Are they bored? Are they
really enjoying themselves, and then your body can't fully open. And that's because arousal and
anxiety cannot coexist. Your brain and your nervous system is wired for survival. So if
parts of you feel judged or unsafe or checked out, your body is saying, uh-uh, no, not now.
It's not safe to be vulnerable. So what do you do? Well, first of all, we don't try to force
ourselves to stay present because that only creates more pressure. You can try to come back
to center and back into your body, but you can also anchor yourself in your body through your
breath, through focusing on the bodily sensations, and through simple curiosity. That's the essence
of a lot of what I teach in Sex Magic, how to come home to your body as a sacred place,
not as a performance. Reclaiming your pleasure as a place to receive, not just to achieve.
So if your mind tends to hijack your pleasure, here's a beautiful practice that you can use
before or even during intimacy to shift back into presence and back into your body.

Let me know what you think.
It's called the embodiment receiving,
and this can be done solo or with a partner before intimacy.
So it starts by closing your eyes,
place one hand on your heart and one on your belly and take a few slow breaths in through the nose
and out through the mouth and imagine as you do so breathing in and out a warm golden light coming
in from the crown of your head soft sensual and loving with the in-breath with each breath
visualize the light melting down into your body through your face and throat and heart and belly
your pelvis, and your thighs. Let it fill every part of you with presence and permission.
And as you feel the light land in your lower belly and pelvis, say silently out loud,
I give myself permission to receive. My body knows how to feel. I am safe here.
i give myself permission to receive my body knows how to feel i am safe here
this takes less than three minutes but it actually shifts your state completely
it gets you out of your head and into the sacred truth of your body full presence if this helped
you breathe a little deeper inspired you in some way or you want to learn more make sure to hit
