Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - How to Get Over Fear of Rejection in the Bedroom
Episode Date: April 1, 2026You love them, you're attracted to them, but the fear of hearing "not tonight" stops you from taking action or initiating intimacy. So you wait for them to make the first move. And then they feel unde...sired. Suddenly two people who love each other are trapped in a standoff, both feeling rejected, neither feeling seen. In this Language of Love Session, I respond to Theo, who feels anxious initiating because of his fear of rejection. So he waits. It feels safer to avoid the risk. But over time, distance builds as his partner feels undesired. He feels on edge. And intimacy begins to feel heavy instead of connection. At the heart of this conversation is the rejection trigger that can make initiation feel like emotional danger. When an old wound gets activated, “not now” can feel like “not you.” And unless you address that wound, it will quietly run your relationship. We dive into: Why “not tonight” can hit like a full rejection even when it’s not meant that way The role each partner has to play in the intimacy initiation deadlock How to recognize and heal a rejection wound (even if there was no major trauma) Strategies that actually work that take the pressure off and guesswork out of the equation Remember, if you have a question you’d like answered or want to be featured in a future session, email me at languageoflovepod@gmail.com. And if you’re ready to feel more confident initiating and more secure in your desirability, explore my free Quantum Sex course on my website to deepen connection and strengthen your intimate bond. Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've worked with individuals and
couples to help them build deeper, healthier relationships with one another and with themselves.
Welcome to Language of Love Sessions.
This is where I work one-on-one with you, my listeners, in real time.
These sessions are intimate, personal, and grounded in what's actually happening in your
life and relationships.
Let's get started and get fluent in the language of love.
Here is an email from Theo.
Dr. Berman, I get anxious initiating sex because I'm terrified of rejection.
Even when my partner has never been cruel about it, a not tonight hits me like I'm unwanted.
So I wait for them to initiate and then they feel undesired.
I don't want this to become a power struggle.
How do I initiate in a confident, connected way
when rejection is a trigger?
Theo, you got to deal with that trigger, right?
Because you know that even if your partner
is not in the mood,
the fact that you're taking it so personally,
especially since it sounds like your partner
has been clear with you,
they just mean not tonight,
means that you have a rejection wound,
which listen, a lot of us have.
There's nothing wrong with that,
but you don't want to have to be a slave to that.
So I really encourage you to work,
maybe even with a trauma informed therapist, that doesn't mean that you had to have had some huge
relational or sexual trauma to have this kind of rejection. It could have been that you were
kind of humiliated in high school when you asked some girl out and the whole lunchroom laughed at
you, but it really left a mark on your nervous system. So you don't want to be controlled by
your triggers or have to have your relationship controlled by your triggers, much less have your
sex life controlled by your triggers. And my guess is when someone has this kind of rejection
aversion, it comes out in many areas of their life, not just in this area. So your entire life
will get better if you attend to this. So you want to find a trauma-informed therapist who can work
with you around this rejection wound you have that clearly comes up when you're initiating.
Now, that doesn't mean that your partner doesn't have a role to play. And hopefully you've explained
to them how you feel and that this is hard for you and that you want them to feel desired,
but you also have this fear.
And especially if you can tell them I'm working on it now and I'm seeing this therapist, but
it would really help me if maybe, and there's lots of ways, I'm going to give you lots of
ways you can suggest that you could attend to this.
Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman.
I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years, and the main question I always
get asked is, how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term monogamous relationship? Well,
if you want to take your love life, your sex life to the next level, whether you're in a
relationship or not, check out my free course on quantum sex. It's going to teach you how to take
your sexual response to the next level capable of full body orgasms, how to use sex magic to
manifest your dreams and how to connect on an even deeper level sexually with your partner.

Okay. The first is to take the guesswork out of it for a while and schedule sex. Now,
that doesn't mean you have to do it on the same day and time every single week. You can change
week to week, but it does mean you have to address it every week. So you say, okay, you know, this
week we're going to have sex on Thursday night, you know, sometime between six and eight. Next
week, we're going to do it on Sunday morning or whatever. You know, everybody has busy schedules.
So honestly, scheduling, it can be really helpful and it takes the pressure off.
So you both know it's coming.
And I've even had couples that I counsel where we alternate who's kind of the official in
charge, even though it's scheduled on Tuesday night, you're in charge.
So somewhere between six and eight, we're going to have sex and you've all agreed.
So then you go at seven or whenever it is and say, okay, you know, let's go.
whatever. And then on Sunday morning, it's her time to take charge. And I mean, you can make a
game out of it where the one of you is in charge, lights candles, puts on music, you know, sets the
scene, whatever it is. But one of you is kind of taking the initiative when it's already established
when you're going to have sex and it takes the guesswork and the pressure out of it.
The other is that you can sort of have a conversation like, look, I am going to initiate,
but I want to know some windows. Maybe you don't know in advance, but maybe you know that
Sunday afternoons, I should never ask because you've already got the Sunday scaries and maybe
Friday night or Saturday night or nights or Sunday mornings or whatever. What are the windows when
you might be most receptive to me initiating? Because I very much desire you and I want you
to feel that desire, but I start to get into my rejection stuff if I ask and it's not a good time
for you. Now, there's still room for you to say no if you're not up to it in that moment, obviously,
but I would like it to be at a time where you're most likely to say yes. And then the other thing
is to ask her or him, whoever your partner is, I'm assuming it's a her, because usually, I mean,
some guys say not tonight, but usually I hear that from women. So you could say, I would really like
you to initiate, or maybe we could take turns. If you initiated the last time we had sex, then I'm
going to initiate the next time. Because just like you want to feel desired, I want to feel desired
too, and I don't want to be rejected. So it's not really fair for her to say, hey, I want to feel
desired, and by the way, I might shoot you down. But there also has to be room for honest dialogue
and you can't let this rejection stuff rule your life.
So I hope that gives you some guidance
and you keep us posted on how it goes.
And you call or email if you have a question.
Nothing off limits on the Language of Love sessions.
I'll see you next time.
Said I'm crazy for your love
