Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Is it cheating... or not?

Episode Date: May 27, 2026

Late-night texting. Deep emotional conversations. A level of intimacy your partner shares with someone else that they no longer share with you. Nothing physical has happened. But something inside yo...u still says: this does not feel okay. And that is where so many couples get stuck. Because one person says, “Nothing happened.” While the other feels like something already did. So who is right? And what happens when two people are operating from completely different definitions of loyalty, betrayal, and emotional boundaries? Because trust rarely breaks all at once. Usually, the definitions break first. In this Language of Love Session, I respond to Chris, who is struggling to understand whether his partner’s emotional connection with someone else counts as cheating, and what to do when one partner sees harmless friendship while the other feels deeply destabilized. This conversation is not about policing behavior or labeling every outside connection as betrayal. It is about understanding what happens when emotional energy, secrecy, and intimacy begin shifting outside the relationship without clarity, agreement, or conversation. Because emotional affairs rarely start with an intention to cheat. They start with unspoken needs, blurred boundaries, and rationalizations that slowly erode trust over time. What we explore in this episode: Why emotional betrayal often hurts more deeply than physical betrayal for many people How secrecy, emotional dependency, and private intimacy become warning signs long before anything physical happens Why couples repeatedly fight about the same issue when they have never clearly defined what loyalty actually means to them What it reveals when one partner feels hurt but cannot fully explain why, while the other insists they did nothing wrong Why assumed boundaries quietly damage relationships more than openly discussed boundaries ever do How to create clear agreements around emotional intimacy, friendships, texting, social media, and outside connections before resentment builds The difference between controlling a partner and protecting the integrity of your relationship If you have ever questioned whether something counted as cheating, felt uncomfortable with a partner’s outside connection, or struggled to explain why “nothing physical” still hurt so much, this episode will give language to an experience many people silently wrestle with. Because trust is not only about what happened. It is also about what was protected, prioritized, and emotionally shared. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, and for the last 30 years, I've been helping people learn to love and be loved better. It's time we all become fluent in the language of love. Welcome to Language of Love. This is Language of Love Sessions. Some of my favorite time
Starting point is 00:00:45 is when I get to answer your questions, whatever's on your mind about life, love, relationships, intimacy, you can reach out to me at languageoflovespod at gmail.com and email me your question, or just let me know that you want to get live on the air with me and I'll talk with you one-on-one and we'll try to work out whatever is going on. There's no question off limits. And of course, when you're asking yours, believe me, there are millions of people who have the same question. Chris has a question that I think is pretty normal and pretty common as well. hi dr berman i'm confused about what counts as cheating now my partner says they didn't do anything in quotes but they were messaging someone late at night sharing personal stuff they don't
Starting point is 00:01:32 share with me no sex no meetup it feels like emotional intimacy was happening how do couples define boundaries around dms flirting and emotional reliance on someone outside the relationship, especially when one person thinks it's harmless? Yeah, this is such an important question, Chris, because I see this happening all the time. What you're talking about is emotional cheating, right? So there's emotional cheating, there's physical cheating, there's financial infidelity, there's all kinds of cheating. And when you are investing energy away from your relationship, even if you aren't acting on it physically, it puts the relationship at risk and it absolutely can feel like a betrayal. So, you know, there's a couple of things I want to say
Starting point is 00:02:19 about this. First of all, this is why it's so important for every couple to have a really clear conversation about where the lines are, right? So for your partner, their line is, as long as I'm not getting physical with anyone, I'm not doing anything wrong. And I'm not having virtual sex with them or physically connecting with them or meeting them in person, then anything goes. That is not how you see it. And quite frankly, Chris, not how I would see it either. But that's why it's really important or as early in the relationship as you can. And if not, now is the time in your relationship for anyone listening to talk about what are the rules? Like in my relationship with my husband, especially when, you know, because we were
Starting point is 00:03:09 already together for probably 10, 15 years when social media really took off. And so we had a conversation because I was getting these friend requests from a lot of ex-boyfriends and he was getting them from a lot of ex-girlfriends. And so we said, all right, what's the deal here? Are we okay with us being friends with our exes online? And we decided, no, we aren't. And we also decided that early on that we give each other all of our passwords, not because we're constantly checking up on each other, but because there's nothing to hide. Right. So that's first of all, like, is it okay to be friends with exes? Is it okay to have an emotional connection with someone where things are shared that are not shared with me? Now, of course, with your girlfriends or even with guy friends, whoever, there may be things that you're not telling your partner, but if it is involving flirting or relying on that person, or you notice that you are telling that person your exciting news before you
Starting point is 00:04:13 tell your partner, you're basically siphoning off the energy that should be going towards your partner toward someone else. And it's a really slippery slope. My general rule of thumb, if you want to know what I think will keep you from problems, the rule is simple. Do not say, do, or behave in any way with someone who could be a potential sexual partner. So that means if you're heterosexual, someone of the opposite gender, if you're homosexual, someone of the same gender, if you're bi, it's a little trickier, right?
Starting point is 00:04:52 but you know what I mean. You don't behave, speak, write anything that you wouldn't do with your partner standing right next to you. If your partner would be like, oh no, that is not cool, then it's not cool, right? And so Chris, even though your partner thinks I didn't do anything, I'm just having an emotional connection with someone, it's not okay with you. And that's why the boundary has to be made really clear. You don't have to explain why you want what you want. You both have to agree on the boundaries. And if they don't agree and they're like, well, I'm keeping this relationship going,
Starting point is 00:05:38 I don't agree with you, then that's a real red flag, right? That they are now dependent. So as far as DMs and flirting goes, much less emotional reliance, that is dangerous territory and it's detracting from your connection. So if your partner doesn't agree, then I would suggest that you maybe get some couples therapy because sometimes we need some outside support to kind of really get clear on what rules of the road we want to set in our relationship and how to negotiate those and navigate those. I would like to see the two of you come to a place where you were on the same page about what was okay and not okay, where the lines were very clear and you
Starting point is 00:06:26 discussed all the different scenarios and what would be okay and not okay, and that you have each other's passwords, not because you're going to be constantly checking, but because there's nothing to hide. I am a big fan of couples sharing passwords. I do not think there is a reason to hide them unless you have something to hide. So hopefully that gives you some guidance, Chris. I hope it does. And if you have a question, you can always reach out. I am here for you on the language of love, helping you learn to love and be loved better. We'll see you next time.
