Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - The Awakened Way with Medium Suzanne Giesemann
Episode Date: November 6, 2024Losing someone we love is a heartbreak like no other. When I lost my son Sammy, it felt like a piece of me went missing, but that wasn’t the end of our connection. In fact, since he crossed over, I...ve felt his presence in the most unexpected ways. Turns out, love has a way of sticking around—even when we are no longer here in physical form. In this deeply moving Language of Love Conversation, I’m thrilled to chat with Suzanne Giesemann, a spiritual teacher, evidentiary medium, and author. After the loss of her stepdaughter, Susan, Suzanne began a whole new journey as a spiritual medium, discovering that the bonds we share don’t fade—they just change channels. She even shares her “Sip of the Divine” meditation, a practice that’s helped countless people, including me, turn pain into purpose and keep those we love close at heart. So, if you’re curious about keeping that connection alive or just need a little comfort, this episode is one you won’t want to miss! Here’s a glimpse of what we explore: Signs that indicate that our loved ones are still with us after they've passed How we can find growth through grief and turn pain into purpose Ways of connecting with the spiritual realm “Soul plans” and why they matter How gratitude can help us bridge spiritual connections Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Suzanne’s book, The Awakened Way, and explore her website for even more insights. Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman.
And for the past 30 years, I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be loved better.
Here on the Language of Love Conversations, I'm talking to some of the world's most influential and revolutionary experts,
thought leaders, spiritual teachers, and celebrities about love, sex, and relationships from a mind, body, and spirit perspective.
And that way, my goal is to awaken your mind, body, and soul.
It's time to become fluent in the language of life.
Suzanne Giesemann is an author and teacher of Awakened Living.
She's been included on Watkins' list of the 100 most spiritually influential living people.
She's also a former U.S. Navy commander and has a master's degree in national security affairs.
She's authored 15 books, six best-selling HemiSync recordings, YouTube videos reaching
millions of viewers, all kinds of content.
She creates online classes, workshops, retreats, even Awakened Way cruises.
But she is most famous for not only her access to ancient spiritual wisdom, but as an evidentiary
medium. Her mediumship, she gets messages that are so specific and provide such stunning evidence
of our essential interconnectedness and to the truth that love never dies. She has a beautiful
way of making deep spiritual concepts so easy to understand. And her left brain thinking allows her
to articulate processes that help us connect to the divine in really practical ways.
So I'm so excited to dive into this language of love conversation with Suzanne Giesemann.
Suzanne Giesemann, thank you so much for being here with us on the language of love.
Laura, it's great to be here, especially as a language major.
Yeah, well, good.
So I bet you speak the language of love well, too.
You certainly speak the language of the other side very well.
I'm really excited to get into all of this with you.
I was thinking, there's so many questions I have for you, but I was thinking it would
be really helpful because most of my peeps here, some of them are spiritual seekers,
some of them aren't even in that realm, but all of them, because they're here and they
know me, are open to it.
For many of us, like me, we've lost someone.
It doesn't have to be a child, but some of what I want to cover in this episode with
you, which we'll get to in a little while, is how we ourselves can connect to the other side.
And one of the things that I think is so compelling about your story is that you didn't start off
this way. You were a high ranking, you worked for the military for 20 years in a high ranking
position. I think you were the aide de camp of like the head of the U.S. military, right? The
chairman. I was a Navy commander and served as aide to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Wow. So you did that in totally in the left brain, like, I mean, maybe you were using right brain stuff, but you wouldn't, you know, you were using your intuition, but you weren't necessarily calling it that. And you were in the practice, you know, just like I used to be so in the sciences and what you could see and prove with your five senses. And, you know, you were sort of in a similar world in a military world.
From what I read, after 9-11, things changed for you, and that's when you decided to retire.
I was wondering if we could start there.
You could tell a little bit of that story, how that happened.
Then we'll get into what triggered your awakening into the more psychic, mediumship, channeling
realms.
Sure.
I would not have called it intuition when I was on active duty.
That was just to me thinking ahead, planning ahead.
And it served me well.
That's why the chairman asked me to be his aide.
We were in the last airplane in U.S. airspace on 9-11.
And we flew over the Burning World Trade Center towers on our way back to Washington.
After we got the news, we landed in D.C., went to our burning office building that we
just left ours earlier, the Pentagon.
And I really have had people say to me, did a plane really crash into the building?
And I said, I really stepped over pieces of the engine in the grass personally.
And that was a real wake up call for me.
And I retired as soon as I was eligible because I just didn't want to be like that other Navy
commander who was two weeks away from retirement when he was killed by the attack.
And I said, you know, I've served enough here.
Let's go live our dreams, I said to my husband.
So we did.
We sold our house and our cars.
We went off sailing into the sunset and eventually sailed across the Atlantic.
And we're off the coast of Croatia when we got news that my husband, Ty's daughter,
Susan, my stepdaughter had been struck and killed by lightning.
No, that literally took the wind out of our sails.
We stopped cruising, came back here.
And that's when my spiritual search really began.
And I'm so sorry for your loss.
I know it well, obviously.
And I thought that was a really compelling part of the story too, because I now have
met thousands and thousands and thousands of parents in particular, it seems, but I
think it's true of anyone who's lost someone near and dear to them.
But so many parents who were not really thinking about or open to the more spiritual realms
before. And once they lose someone really crucial to their hearts and or a child,
it's almost like an invitation. It's an opening. It is. It's a wake up call to awakening. And
when you answer that call, life changes for the better and changes the whole trajectory of your
grief journey. Yes, I really do believe that. And it's something that's so important to me and the
work that I do with people to help them heal this piece of it. Once you recognize, and we're going
to be getting into this, guys, and we're going to do it through not only what Suzanne went through
herself, but all that she teaches people on how to do this. And I see this time and time again
with the mamas and the others that I help heal, that once we have that experience of connecting
with our loved ones on the other side and realize the truth that energy can't be created or
destroyed. It just changes form. And they're still right there. It's like 30, at least 30%
of the healing right there, because you realize to a certain extent, yes, that you can't physically
be with them anymore, but they're still here on a certain level. They're very much still here.
It's just a different channel on the network. I love how you talk about that and how it's like
a television. Can you speak to that for a minute? You gave us a metaphor of how it's like a
television station. It is. When we think about a TV that's on the wall here playing a certain
program, the people aren't in the TV. It's an instrument that displays a frequency, a signal.
So with the TV set breaks, the signal is still here. We just can't perceive it with our physical
senses. So you and I are souls being displayed through these physical bodies. This is the TV
set. When this body no longer functions, our signal, the soul containing our energy information
and our story is still here. It doesn't go anywhere. We just can't normally sense it with
our ordinary day-to-day physical senses. So what I've learned to do and what I teach other people
to do is attune to that channel using as much of our physical senses as we can, but our soul senses
as well. Yeah. And we're going to get into that, but let's just put a pin in that for now and talk
about your daughter, because that was the opening for you. And like so many, that opening came,
I mean, I have met so many amazing mediums since Sammy died. And so many of them,
Some of them, their gifts were there from the time they were little, but so many of
them, their gifts came online because they desperately wanted to connect with a loved
one.
And it sounds like that was really how it started for you as well.
Right.
And I had no idea that I would become a medium or that I would be helping other people.
None saw Susan's body at the funeral in the coffin.
And I just had an epiphany.
That's not Susan.
She still has to exist in some form.
Even though I was raised with no religion, I hadn't studied the soul or spirit communication
at all.
I just knew.
And that's the soul's awareness now coming to the surface in an epiphany, the moment
of grace, that knowing.
And so even though this was 2006, when meditation isn't as mainstream as it is now, I knew that
that was how I was going to connect with Susan.
Not through some medium.
I was going to do it myself.
And so I began meditating every day and that opened me to these abilities that we all have.
They're just dormant.
They're latent.
I don't remember if it was something I read because I've read your book, but I also saw
you speak at the Helping Parents Heal when I was there with our mutual friend, Anita.
So I don't remember in what context you were sharing this story, but you were saying that
it was a long while before you actually heard from Susan herself, but that there were others
who came in first. Oh, many, many. I was doing readings for other people before I connected with
Susan and she came through much later after I'd already connected with her to tell me she
deliberately held back because if she'd come through right away and it makes perfect sense
to me knowing my personality, I would have said, you know, check in the block. Here you are. That's
great. Now let's just get on with normal life. But because I was so determined to not stop until
I connected with Susan, I started getting clear evidence from other people's loved ones and
tapping into even higher beings than formerly human beings. It was all part of a plan, which
helps me encourage those who aren't called to be mediums, but might be discouraged if they thought
it would take three years to connect with their loved ones. I've had a lot of parents now come
to me and say that they're having breakthroughs in much shorter time because that's the main
intention. I think what you're alluding to here is the soul plan. And I think that's such an
important piece of this. And it's really hard to hold on to when you've been through something
terrible that is so painful, or you're struggling with a horrible loss. The last thing you want to
hear is like, well, this is just part of your soul's plan. But that's a big piece of it, right?
And for you, your specific soul's plan was to be a teacher of this and to guide other people and to make accessible the more metaphysical realms, the soul's connection, the higher self to people like you were, people who lived more in the left brain, right?
Like part of your soul's plan was to be an initiation for those people to teach them
how, but, and that's why it sounds like you were saying, and what Susan said to you is
like, I could not, you know, I couldn't give you what you wanted right away, or you would
have just stayed communicating with me and you never would have become the teacher you've
become and the one in service to so many others.
So that was part of your soul's plan.
Yeah.
The key point there for everybody is don't feel that you're a failure.
You're not doing something right.
If you don't get what you want right away, we're in this for the long game.
And there's zero doubt in my mind that Susan and I know each other as soul family throughout
lifetimes and that this lifetime, she said, before we came here, this one, I'm going to
be here just a short period of time and you're going to carry on in my honor, which is what
I'm doing.
But it's funny, I took something off the shelf just yesterday.
And when I looked at it today, Susan said to me, this is going to come up in the show
today.
And all of a sudden I laugh because it did just now.
Now, she came to me once when I was in England studying mediumship, and she said, I was your
mother in another lifetime in Russia together.
And I just think that sounds ridiculous.
I can't prove past life regression.
This is where my left brain professional side says, oh, here we go with the past life things.
And I said, all right, so you show me.
What are you going to show me just to validate that?
And she showed me this pink Fabergé egg, clear as day, very ornate.
And I'm in London.
And I thought that's a very strange thing to show me.
Well, the next day I went to leave at Gatwick Airport and Susan drops in and says, go wander
around the lobby, practice tuning into spirit.
So I go out to the hotel lobby.
I'm wandering around.
She says, stop.
I stop.
I look to my left in the gift shop in London and this pink Faberge egg is on the shelf.
That's a Russian thing.
What is it doing in London?
Well, she knew I was going to be seeing it.
So you wanted to let me know how clear our connection is.
So I just trust that.
And this is really a great point for everybody.
This is not our only go around with our loved ones.
We've been in various family positions with them in other lifetimes,
or maybe they're parallel lifetimes.
It's all unfolding beyond time.
So what do we do with what we're given in this lifetime?
You and I have had what we would call a tragedy,
but yet we know our children are right here.
So for them, it's not a tragedy.
we're on a mission. Yeah. Yeah. And it really does seem to, I mean, I always say that grief
is a portal, but when something like this happens, it does awaken you and it, I can see,
I mean, I I've shared this before, but I think this happened when I was at the conference in
one of the sessions at the helping parents heal conference, where I saw you speak,
it was in another session, we were in a guided meditation and I was communing with him in this.
and I said to him, are you going to help me write? Cause I'm writing a grief book now.
And he's, and it's the first one I've ever written. And he said, I said, are you going to
help me write it? And he looked at me with this, like mom smile on his face and said, mom, I was
always going to help you write it. And I knew what he meant that like, this was always part of the
plan that I was going to have him for a short time. And then that was going to break me into
a million pieces. And then I would end up changing the trajectory in many ways of what I offer the
world. And I hear that story, not this exact story, but your story, my story. I hear this
time and time again, turning pain into purpose. I just feel like that's a really important piece
of the puzzle. So yeah, go ahead. What were you going to say?
That you just ignited another recent memory from a recent memory reading I did with a woman whose
son took his own life. And she said, ask him why. And I got answers, but we can't prove that. I like
evidence-based mediumship. And she said, was this part of his soul's plan? And my guides have
explained very clearly, and I felt absolutely correct from him as well, that the soul does not
come in planning to take their own life, but they're warned, advised by their guides before
they come here, you know, you're taking on a really tough assignment. Maybe you'll have
mental illness. Maybe you'll encounter a parent with a challenge that's really hard. And there
will come a time when you may want off the planet early. We advise you to say, are you sure you're
up to this? And that's the way that's been framed. So my client looked at me and she said,
well then what's my soul plan in other words why did i take on this life yeah that has this
challenge in it and i have learned laura not to answer off the top of my head this child is right
here i need to ask him i need to ask my guides so i said what's your mom's soul plan silently i
asked this i said your son said mom your role is to love fiercely i thought that was a very
unusual word choice and her eyes got really big. And she said, we have a saying about him
sorely missed and fiercely loved. That to me validated our whole, everything that came up
before that, his reasons why everything, it was just beautiful. And our mission can be that simple
to me. Yeah. It doesn't mean you're going to change the politics or the world or become a
well-known medium. It could be that you are just moving different in the world. It could be that
you are here to love more fiercely. It could be that your soul, you know, wanted to experience
the growth and the breaking open and healing that comes from going through something like this.
Yeah. So I get that. And people say, okay, what's, you know, what's the big thing? And people tend
to rush. Well, I'm going to start a foundation. I'm going to, you know, because it helps and it
can be used to kind of bypass the pain. So it's always that balance. And I do love this about
your work. You have so many beautiful stories of how you, the evidence piece. You have your
friend Lynette, who I met when we were at Helping Parents Heal, who's one of your besties. And you
have a mutual friend, you and Lynette, named Brenda, right? Who is now on the other side.
And the three of you kind of have this game you play, which I thought was so cute and so cool, to kind of make sure you're tapped in and tuned in before your sessions.
She's sitting over here right now twiddling her thumbs because I've been so busy.
I've done barely not even a handful of readings all month.
It's frustrating me because I love doing readings.
But Brenda was dear friends for both of us.
And it surprised me that she now helps me in my readings by getting the client, the
spirits lined up for my clients and telling them how I work and my symbolism.
And so I found that a great way for me to just have a little fun and make sure I'm tuned
in and ready to work is before the client comes online or in person, I'll just casually
say, hey, Brenda, tell me something Lynette has done recently.
Give me a current event.
And she just drops it right in my mind.
I text Lynette.
Brenda's here getting ready to do a reading. She says, you've been chewing on ice and Lynette will
text back. Let's just say, oh my God, she's such a spy because it's just accurate every time,
just common things that I wouldn't have any way of knowing. And if I could, there was the most
stunning one where I said, Brenda wasn't here at first. I had a little trouble tuning in,
but now she says that our friend, our mutual friend, Jane is going through some tough challenges
And Lynette said, I don't know.
I haven't talked to Jane in months.
And I said, it's been a year for me.
And she said, let me check.
Well, the reading had to start.
So I had to trust that was correct.
And I finished the reading.
And here comes Lynette on the text.
She says, you won't believe this.
I reached out to Jane.
She says she's going through such a hard time that she really wanted to know we're not alone,
that our loved ones are here in spirit.
And she loved Brenda, too.
And she reached out to Brenda before the reading and said, I know you and Suzanne and Lynette
played this sign game.
Would you bring up me the next time you play?
So I know you support me too.
Oh, that's beautiful.
So she gave, so your friend Jane, who's here, you know, who's a living person, gave a shout
out to her friend on the other side, Brenda.
Yes.
To bring herself in as a sign that Brenda could get.
Wow.
That's really confirmation.
Yeah.
And I mean, the way that you seem to move in the world is I respect so much.
And I, I aspire to be like that where you just, I mean, do you just walk around the
world being guided?
I do.
And I have to tell you, I was checking into a hotel in Boulder, Colorado last weekend,
And then, you know, it's a little stressful traveling and being on flights.
And I'm standing just behind two people in front of me.
And I didn't realize that I had been tuning in because I'm standing there with my eyes
closed.
And this woman in front of me turns around.
She said, are you sleeping or angry?
And I said, neither.
I'm tuning in because I was just getting centered and asking my team anything I need to know.
And she laughed.
And I thought, boy, if more of us did that.
And then even greater, the next, I was there because I was going to be filmed for Gaia TV.
And the next day I'm getting ready.
I only had the one outfit to wear.
And I usually put my outfit on before I do my makeup.
And the guides clear as day said, don't put your shirt on yet.
And I thought, well, that's strange.
Okay.
But I've really learned to listen, you know, follow orders.
And so I didn't put my shirt on.
I take the lid off the foundation.
and because I'm at higher altitude, it popped and exploded all over you. Oh my gosh. Wait,
so how do you get that message? Do you hear it? Do you sense it?
You're the first one I'm sharing this with. I'm going to share it in my monthly webinar
next month in November. All these new things and new insights, I always share once a month
in a webinar, but this one was a profound aha for me the next day when I thought about that.
it was absolutely a voice, a being saying, don't put your shirt on yet. It wasn't a knowing,
maybe I shouldn't. And my guides told me the reason we've gotten into this type of communication
with each other is because I thoroughly have come to know they are real beings. They don't
have physical form, but they're sentient, conscious, humorous, helpful beings. And we
converse that way. I honor them and value them as beings with whom I interact. But most people
don't have that awareness of their guides. So the insights that their guides give them
sound like their own thoughts. Maybe I shouldn't put my shirt on. When actually you can aspire to
and achieve this conversational back and forth with your guides, that's totally silent. If you
start having those kinds of conversations every day in the silence, in meditation with them.
Yeah. I want to talk about that because you have this process that you call the sip of the divine,
which is like a three-minute kind of centering. And you can go on, and we'll put all this in the
show notes, but you can go on Suzanne's YouTube channel, right, is where I think it is. But we'll
also give all the links to her books and website and everything. But it's a three-minute kind of
meditation where you sort of tap and tune in and open up to like, what would you have me know? Or
what do you want me to know? Right? That's it. And the reason it's so perfect, we're SIP standing
for sit in peace, is it fits the bill of what we need to learn to connect regularly. It causes you
to set aside the external objective world to use your non-physical senses. You're believing that
you're going to get an answer. You're focusing on one thing only, and it only takes three minutes.
Most people say, I don't have time to meditate. Yeah. Yeah. But if you can carve out three
minutes a day to really emphasize in your own mind, I am connecting to something higher. I'm
part of something greater. And ask a question from the heart, trusting you're going to get an answer.
You start to get answers that you wouldn't normally get at your normal level. And it
becomes this beautiful self-feedback that shows this works and it's worth the investment of three
minutes. Three minutes. And you say, you know, those messages that come, especially signs from
spirit can be super subtle. I find, I mean, we're not until maybe we really trust it. We're not
going to hear like a proclamation like you did getting ready for your show, but you discuss it.
I know, I think in the awakened way that one of the ways that you can kind of know that
this isn't you and something you're making up, but a message from spirit, your higher
self, your guides, your loved ones.
And I also want to talk to you how, you know, how, you know, which is which, but first tell
us how we know we're getting something from somewhere other than our own minds.
There are two main ways.
Number one is you just know in your heart.
it's not your imagination. There's a different feeling to it that even though you may continue
to question, am I making this up? There's something in you that's causing you to question
that because you know this is real and you want so badly to be real, but it is.
But the second one is what you're sensing or hearing or seeing stands out from your normal
stuff. In my book, The Awakened Way, stuff is an acronym for sensations, thoughts, and feelings.
all experience. If you really think about it boils down into, you're having a sensation of
something, a thought or a feeling. And so you just, you become aware of what's arising in
awareness and you say, Whoa, where'd that come from? That's, should I pay attention to that?
It's just a matter of what stands out. Yeah. And it's kind of, I remember you saying it sort
of feels new and different than how you normally think or say, even if it's slightly aligned. I
I mean, sometimes it's not, but even if it's slightly aligned with how you might think
already, it feels kind of fresh and different.
Absolutely.
That's it.
And you also talk about, which is something I do all the time.
I always say, you probably have an acronym.
You have so many beautiful acronyms.
There may be an acronym for this too.
I always say, run it through your heart.
And I feel like that's a really beautiful process too, of like holding things that your
decision. One of the ways we can tap into our higher selves and access is also through our
bodies. So it's both the way that we can tell when something is maybe true and that really is a
message, but also when we can answer a question for ourselves about how to handle a situation
or what next step to take. Can you tell your version of that?
I don't have an acronym, but you're absolutely correct. The body is a barometer and a wonderful
indicator. And so if you're not supposed to do something, or it's a big no in the answer
to a yes, no question, you'll feel a clenching in your gut and your chest. If it's a yes,
there's just complete openness. The challenge is that if we go into asking a question with fear
around an issue, we're already clenched. So before you ask a question and tune in,
you practice the vagus nerve breathing that I talk about in the book, or simply breathe in
slowly and completely exhale. And while resting in the exhale, before you inhale again, ask the
question. The exhale leaves you in this open state. Now you're ground zero. You can ask the
question and see, do I tense up or is it open? Beautiful. And so let's talk about all the
different versions, right? People talk about the spirit. They talk about the soul. They talk about
the higher self, talk about the guides or ascended masters, loved ones on the other side. Can you
explain your understanding of what all these different components are that we can access?
Yes. When you sit in the silence and sit in peace for three minutes a day, and maybe it becomes a
little longer, you start to realize that everything that arises is coming from pure being, no story
beyond the story, beyond all sensations, thoughts, and feelings. It's this beautiful state of
nothingness. It's not just this empty void. It's pure potential. That's God. That's spirit. That's
the field. That's the sea of consciousness. Everything that exists is an emanation of that
field. You and I, our loved ones who have passed, the masters, angels, guides, they're all coming
from this same field, but they all have a different vibration. And so just like a piano has
one keyboard with different octaves, this one sea of consciousness has different bandwidths
of frequency of information and energy. And we have over time figured out that, okay,
here's the human in a physical body bandwidth, and here's the frequency or the channel for those who
have passed from their body and are now in the astral realm. So we give them all labels,
the higher self, the masters, that's what they are. Patterns of energy and information at
different frequencies, all connected. That's the most important part. This is what causes
suffering in this world, the feeling that we're separate, the misconception that we are separate
from source. Once you learn how connected you are and learn how to tap into that, to dissolve into
that, that our very being, yet we're just an infinitesimal part of it, that changes everything.
That gives us hope, gives us access to information and guidance, and gives us instant connection
with others. Yeah. And so is there any, I mean, does it matter who we reach out to? In other
words, like your intention is what your goal is. If you really want to connect with your loved one
who passed, you set a clear intention to take me to their channel, even if you don't know what
their frequency is. But how about just, I just want whatever's in my greatest and highest good,
whoever has that and has my greatest and highest good and interest, please give me the answer now
or come now. Yeah. I love your story. Maybe you can tell this story. This was in your book about
Odom. Oh, I just was in meditation and felt this very powerful masculine presence step in. And I
normally don't see it faces, but this one looked like Moses with this long white beard and older
man. And I said, who are you? Because I've learned to engage when I sent someone and he says,
Odom. And I thought, who's Odom? I don't, I might've heard that before, but I don't know.
and I said, tell me all about you. And I always have my pad of paper when I meditate because I
get really cool downloads. So he started telling me and he said, I had an eight-legged horse. I
write it down anyway, even though I'm thinking, what is this? He said that he discovered the
runes and I suddenly got this piercing, stabbing pain in my left side that literally made me go,
ow, got all kinds of other information. And he gave me some guidance about who we are and what
consciousness is. When he left, I went out of meditation and Googled Odin. To my dismay,
just learned that Odin is a mythological figure. But indeed, in the mythology, he had an eight
legged horse. And he was pierced in the side right where I got my pain by a spear in this
mythology and hung upside down from this famous tree and discovered took up runes, this divination
tool. This boggled my mind. How can I be tapping into a mythological figure? So I asked him to come
back the next day in meditation and he did. And I said, you know, how can I be tapping into you?
And he said, everything is consciousness. And that figure of him was created over millennia
of people believing in this mythological figure, but it's still an aspect, a pattern of consciousness
with a story, which is what you and I are. Yeah. The moment that really got me was when I said to
him, I protested, but you are a myth. And without pause, he replied, you are a myth.
And if you really look into that, it's true. What is a myth, but a story that brings growth.
and we come into human form into these bodies as beings of light to experience growth through
our stories there that doesn't mean they're not real i said to odin are you real and he said as
real as you are but not human anything that can be created in consciousness is real and can convey
healing growth and whether it's manifested in the 3d realm and perceived in 3d by our five senses
or not doesn't mean it's not real yeah yeah why do we read myths mythology for the learning that
it provides us and we learn that we all go through these cycles and these growth periods and
all for the experience and the joy of it even though it's not always joyous
most of us have no idea how to move through loss there's no roadmap to follow when you're trying
to navigate grief and i realized this when i lost my son three years ago as a therapist who
understood grief a whole new level of pain opened up to me when i lost my 16 year old son
and since then i have been building resources that have allowed me to navigate through loss
not only in a healthy way,
but in a way that has transformed me for the better.
We can move through the most terrible loss with grace.
And that's why I have created the course,
Good Grief, Healing from Loss with Love.
You can find it on my website, drlauraberman.com,
right there on the homepage,
as well as free resources,
letting you know how to support others
who are going through loss.
None of us has to do this alone.
We're going to talk about some more ways to kind of access the higher realms.
But you were in that story about Odin.
You were talking about Ty, your husband.
And there were a couple of points in your book where you talked about, in fact, I think
your first interaction with Susan, you said, I need some evidence to give your father and
other family that it's really you. And I want you to tell that evidence in a minute,
but I also want you to speak because it sounds to me like Ty is a lot like my husband,
you know, very kind of left-brained and is not in the hanging out in the psychic and metaphysical
realms. And I meet a lot of people who are, especially women who are spiritually seeking
and like stepping into this and are worried because their husbands are not. And I don't
feel like that matters. I mean, my husband's not either, but I wanted to get your take on how that
works in your relationship. It has generally been very smooth sailing. He trusts me. He knows this
is real. He's very proud of my work. He sees the difference that it's making in this world. It's
saving people's lives and changing them and very, very supportive, but you're absolutely right.
it's not his path. And sometimes it is a big challenge because when you open up to oneness,
you accept everybody, no matter what. And he's just not there yet. And I really pushed some
buttons with him last week and I've changed because I used to have strong opinions too
about certain things. And now I'm just open to things that I didn't expect to be. And he's not
ready to be there. I've just been working with my guides and they said, just flow and allow.
Oh, that's the message they've given me throughout this whole journey. Allow others to be where they
are. I didn't come into this life to change him. I came into this life for me to accept everyone
as they are. Yes. Including him and his. Exactly. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I feel the same way. And it's
the same thing with grief. Like my husband grieves completely differently than I did. And for a hot
second, I wanted to make that wrong until I realized like, who the hell am I to say what's
right or wrong for anyone? Everyone has to grieve in their own way, but yeah, it can be a real
challenge, but I think that's the key. And you speak to this a lot. And I was really re-inspired
reading your book. I have to say, because this is something that I aspire to, but have not been in
this space. I've fallen out of it, I would say, especially since Sammy died, but really in
particular, I would say over the past year of just being in a lot of fear with everything going on
in the world. And, you know, a lot of what you speak to is this idea of surrender and just
trusting that you are held and supported. I mean, this is me paraphrasing. You didn't exactly say
this, but it may look like a complete shit show, you know, what's happening right now or what's
happening in your own life or in the world in general. But if you just trust and see that it's
kind of a movie that you're in and watching, and on a certain level, your higher self is watching
the movie with popcorn, as you say, but that just letting things unfold, it always seems to work
out and to be for your greatest good. It's interesting that you bring up that particular
story because I just got word that an excerpt from the book is going to be in Spirituality
and Health Magazine. Yay. And I reread the whole excerpt and it's exactly that one about reminding
us that we are like a theater goer who does sit on the balcony and gets drawn into the drama.
But I watched people come out of the movie American Sniper, oh, depressed. And I thought
they paid good money for that they paid money to leave that theater like that and i decided to go
to the movie and see if i could remain as a neutral observer which the soul is the whole time
and i did it and i i learned so much more from that movie than if i'd gotten sucked into the
drama i actually what always happens yeah i felt compassion for everybody on both sides i could see
why people were fighting. And, and I walked out of that theater just with an, isn't that
interesting attitude, which is the phrase my guides always tell us to say when we're knocked
off balance. And so just this morning, thinking about one of these challenges with my husband,
who thinks differently about certain things with what's going on in the world right now,
my guide said, just do that experiment that you did with American Sniper, but turn it on your life.
Yes. That's exactly what, if we do that all the time, then we just say, isn't that interesting?
And don't get caught up in it. Yeah. And don't make meaning out of it because,
you know, it's like the Dalai Lama says, right? The only two days you can't control is what
happened yesterday and what's happening tomorrow, right? Like yesterday is a myth we've made up.
We can't, it's all our memory in the future. We have no freaking idea, but what causes all the
pain and anger and agony is all the meaning we make over what's going to happen out of
X, Y, Z or what this may mean.
And so, guys, I just want to encourage you to try this on.
Just try it on for a week before you start flipping out over something or worrying about
something or making meaning or making something mean something for you or your family or your
loved ones or the world in the future or why this happens and that's going to happen.
Just try them like, oh, isn't this interesting?
what would it be like to just surrender and trust that everything is unfolding
for my and everyone's highest good? It's a real softening, I got to say. And it's the ultimate
exercise in faith, right? It's the ultimate exercise in faith.
Trusting the long game.
Yeah. Yeah. And even just trusting, like my oldest, who's now 28, has had a really hard
time since his brother died. I think that was one of many triggers, but he became suicidal for a
while. And I was not only beside myself because my kid was suicidal and he's a grown man and there's
only so much I could do to help him or to make him get help or whatever. But also I had to face
the possibility that I might lose another one. And boy, was that a dark night of the soul.
And I finally said to my healer therapist, okay, I get the memo and the assignment here for me and my soul is that I am meant to lean so deeply into my faith, so profoundly that I can know that I will, don't know how it will happen, that I'll be okay, but that I will be okay.
even if i was like but why does it have to happen through my freaking children and she said because
that's the only freaking way you get the message and i was like oh shit you're right but it's true
this life is not for the faint of heart no it definitely isn't it's not for wimps okay so you
can ask specifically going back to techniques here you can ask specifically for like you know
Spirit, please tune me into the channel of my loved one, X, Y, Z, or of my guides or
of an ascended master of my higher self, which is kind of our essential self, our spirit
self, right?
That is the lovingly detached observer of this little movie we're in, right?
Right.
And you talk about the sip of divine, and that's a beautiful place to start.
And we talked about how to know whether the messages are real or not.
are there any other techniques? And I also want to talk about Wolf by the way, but are there any
other techniques that you can share that is good to get? I know you have courses, which I have,
I bought the course, but I haven't yet taken it. Oh, I don't know which one you got. Cause I know
it was a course. There was a course on mediumship. It was when you'd already recorded. It wasn't a
lot, but a few online. So just not there on my courses page. Yeah. What you bring to mind here
is a new book that just launched mediumship. Yes. Typically on the topic of mediumship part
one is all of the, how does it work? Why does it work? What makes this possible? Part three is
some how-tos, but part two is really interesting. It's part of a book series that does this in every
book are 32 stories of normal people's after-death communications from their loved ones. And that in
itself, reading stories like that opens us to our own possibility of having those kinds of
experiences. Because if you're not aware that something's possible and you don't believe that
it's possible for you, you'll miss it. It won't even happen to you. Yeah. I found out in my
reading is if I used to be so naive and I just couldn't imagine the kinds of things people do
to each other, hurting them. So I was not able to discern those things in my readings till I
started to open up to what humanity is like, unfortunately. And now I get some of the more
tough cases in my readings because I just wasn't aware and didn't believe. So reading stories like
those in my book or our near-death experiences will open you to greater awareness when those
things happen around you. The after-death communication signs and synchronicities in
many ways, our loved ones across the veil communicate with us. Yeah. I feel that so
strongly that you have to be, if you want that communication, it's so important to not only be
open to the signs, but to accept them and leap into the faith of them when they happen. Because
if you do, then they're like, oh, she gets it. Give her more. Yeah. One thing you said often
in your book, which I totally agree with, but I was noticing I had some resistance to, I'm not
sure why, not huge resistance, but there was a lot around thanking them. Like you say that a lot,
make sure, and it's not like I have a problem thanking people, but for some reason I was like,
I wonder why. I think it's partly like, why is important? I mean, it's polite to thank people
when they, yeah, I'm assuming it is. Yeah. It's a vibration. It's the closest thing to love,
which is the highest vibration we can send out to the spirit world. It's an awareness. I'm not
alone. I'm connected to something that is helping me. It establishes that connection. It opens your
heart. It's so it's like that it's being in the energy of gratitude for the experience of, okay,
that makes a lot more sense to me. It's like that I can totally resonate with, but this, like,
I must thank you versus being in the energy of, and the frequency of gratitude, which is one of
the highest frequencies there is a kind of cements the experience. Yeah. I hope I didn't say you must
I'm saying. No, no, no. You never, I'm sure you didn't say you must. I'm a recovering
codependent. So anything anyone suggests is a must, but, but you suggested it as part of the
process and then you thank them and then you make sure to thank them. And then I was like, yeah,
okay. I never thanked them. I mean, I sometimes do like if Sammy picks a song and it's like
hilarious and the perfect song, I'm like, thank you so much. That was hilarious. You know,
I'll crack up or whatever, but I haven't really ever thought of like, oh, allowing myself to
really swim in the yumminess of gratitude after an experience like that. And before to roll around
in the feeling of whatever you're grateful for, that opens up your field and sets you up for being
in a good state of mind for connecting. Good state of mind for connecting. And also I feel like they
are at such a high vibration, higher than a human body could ever reach that when we move into those
states that you get to with your sip of the divine and your other techniques. And I call
home frequency in my books, getting to that open-hearted home frequency state, you are
raising your frequency so that they can kind of meet you in the middle. I feel like it's easier
for you to access them and them to access you when you're in that higher vibration.
Exactly. One of the teaching techniques I have is to visualize your energy field like a traffic
light. What are you radiating to the spirit world? If you're like, oh, I don't really believe
I can do this and I'm not feeling so great today, but I'll give it a try. That's a red light. But
then, okay, I'll give this my best go. I really hope this works. That's yellow. A green light
would be, I am so grateful to know that this is possible. Here's all my love. I'm just pushing
it at you. And I trust this connection. Boom. Now they've got you. Yeah. I love that. Yeah.
That makes so much sense to me.
I want to circle back.
I remember, and I got off track and didn't ask you about this when you were talking about
the mother and son who committed suicide.
We have a lot of parents in our groups whose children have committed suicide.
Either the initial, many have had multiple children die.
Some of them, one child died of suicide.
The second child died of suicide, kind of like my son was struggling as a result of
the trauma of the first child dying.
But I'm wondering if you can speak to what the truth is, as you understand it on the other side,
because there's so much fear about like, is my child in hell? Was I? All of that.
Let me first say something that I learned from the organization Helping Parents Heal. My working
with them, I've learned from the parents of so many of their children who took their own lives.
They, the parents, no longer use the term committed suicide.
Yes, that's true.
I should have done that.
Completed suicide.
Because commit implies you're breaking a law, which in many states it is, but it's not.
Yes.
And I have talked to so many across the veil who completed suicide, including one week
where I had 10 readings in a row.
Every single spirit that came through had taken their own life.
Wow.
And everyone, 100% of every spirit I've ever connected with who completed suicide was
immediately surrounded by love, greeted by loved ones or guides who said, all right,
let's see what happened there.
Let's talk about this.
Let's go over this.
Let's see how we can make something better come of this.
Let's help your family.
It's just loving and helpful.
They're having their own experiences across the veil.
Some of them do go to what I see as a healing place, like a sanctuary with this blue light.
They've been through a really rough time and they're given time to recover.
Others are just instantly like, that was so hard.
And no, I want to help my family know I'm okay.
It's different for everybody except for the love part.
That's the same for all of them.
Yeah.
It's interesting when Sammy first died, or I know just like you say, completed suicide,
helping parents heal doesn't like to say the word died.
I don't mind the word die because-
No, not die, committed is what they don't like.
No, no, but I was also told recently
not to say that our children died
because there is no death.
I say-
They died, the physical body died.
The physical body died, yeah.
But after that happened,
almost immediately I became obsessed with the question,
did he die knowing?
And does he know now how profoundly
and deeply he is loved. Like, does he know? Does he know? That's like all I could focus on. I think
because I was scared he didn't know. I was scared that, you know, I was blaming myself, I'm sure.
But I got very clearly that, and I want you to speak to this, that once we leave our bodies,
what kind of picture becomes clear from your understanding, talking to so many beings on
the other side and what, and as they recount what they've experienced? It's absolutely that.
they're instantly aware that, oh my gosh, I just came out of that experience and now I'm having
another one, but they're both real. And I remember two specific readings where the children across
the veil said, tell my parents, I know already how much you love me. And in both cases, they
were really obsessing. Like you said, you were like, do you know how much I love you? Yes. Let
them know they can stop. Yeah. They know it even better than they could have ever known it in human
form with all of their own foibles and fears and, you know, all their stories that we get to leave
all of that low frequency behind. And, and so I, my sense was that he, like our loved ones
understand it even more deeply than we could understand it in human form over there.
That's true. Yep. Yeah. And what about making amends? I find that that's a question I get
asked often. If you haven't, and this I see a lot with parents who have passed, and children,
but whoever, loved ones, that there were things left unsaid, or it was a really conflicted
relationship. That is one of the greatest services that a good medium can provide,
to be the mouth for those to say what they want to say and didn't have a chance to say.
but I also like to let people know you don't need a medium. If you have things left unsaid,
just go to your heart and say it to them. I guarantee you they're right here listening
and they're giving you their forgiveness or their understanding in return because they do have the
bigger picture across the veil. Yeah, they really do. My friend, Susan Graw, who's a really wonderful
medium said that she often, if she tells people, like she'll say this, your mother is telling you
how proud she is of you for X, Y, Z. She has to clarify in life, she would have never said this,
you know? I catch myself saying that kind of thing a lot because people might say,
that's not my mom. It's actually evidential to say she would have never said this.
Yes. She would have criticized you for this, but the truth is, yeah. So I think that's really
important for people to know too, that our loved ones leave. I like to think about that with my
dad, especially who got blessed and was a toxic narcissist that, you know, that stuff was left
behind when he left his body. And you were alluding to the writing right down. You talk
about inspired writing. You don't call it automatic writing, but inspired writing. Can
you speak to that? Because I feel like that's a beautiful way that people can connect.
Yes. When I was early on in this journey, I studied the spiritualist tradition and those
in England and the U.S. for coming up on 200 years have been communicating with spirits and
automatic writing was one of the methods. And I would sit for hours waiting for spirit to move
my hand. That's automatic writing. I'd get a little bit of chicken scratch. Now, am I doing
that or am I moving my hand? I finally gave up. And then I started hearing the voices and getting
what I call downloads and I would write. So inspired writing is more like taking dictation
from spirit. You know, it's not you you're in the flow and it works so beautifully because
it holds our attention. We're having a conversation or we're receiving direct communication and
in the writing it down that allows them to keep this steady flow. We can pause and ask our own
questions, write those down too, to maintain the flow. And you can make an appointment with your
loved ones to do this once a week and receive, finally go beyond the, I'm making it up to
receiving information and guidance and insights that you say, oh my gosh, I never would have
thought of that. I know this is them. Yeah. One of the, what we were talking about, how, you know,
it's true. This is really a question I've always considered. Can you type as well as write?
download my free app, Awakened Way. There are coming up on 6,000 daily messages in there for
everybody. They come up new one every day. I type them in my iPad as I receive them in meditation.
Then when I'm out of meditation, I go type it up and put it on the app and online and on Facebook.
But yeah, you can absolutely learn to type, but it's highly recommended if you're new to this to
start out by writing. They actually reinstated teaching cursive writing in California after
not doing so, because they found out that writing by hand activates more of the right brain.
Helps you be more balanced in the way your brain works.
Okay. Cause I find it so much easier to write quickly when I'm typing, which is why
I want to do it that way. That's true. Stay in the right brain at first. So you get
really used to how it feels and how to hold that connection. I've been doing this for years. So now
I just get in that state and I can type and type and type. Yeah. Yeah. That makes a lot of sense
to start off writing because I want to give them some of your amazing, I mean, guys, she has a
million examples of these insane stories that you couldn't make up, but can you share the one about
when you said to Susan, you got to give me something that no one can argue with?
Oh, yes. That was the very first time she came to me after meditating daily for three years to
sense her. She just showed up here. I sensed her up to my right side in her voice. Clear as day.
If I knew somebody before they passed, I hear them in their voice. If we never met,
it sounds like my own thoughts. But this was Susan saying, hey, Suzanne. There was no doubt
it was her, but I knew her dad would likely question if I said, Susan's here. Having already
been connecting with other people's loved ones and knowing how important evidence is, I said,
Susan, thank you. Thank you. I'm so grateful to feel you. I'm crying. I said, but I know we want
your dad to trust. So please tell me three things going on with your biological mother now that I
can't know. And she said, easy, boom, boom, boom. And I wrote it down, came out of meditation,
so excited. Oh my God, Ty, Susan, I got her. She's here. I only got her. Let's call your ex-wife.
And I don't know what she thought about that. Probably thought I was off my rocker, but I said,
no. Susan says, your cat is sick. I love that because cats are relatively healthy.
Yeah. And her mom said, I just brought her home from the vet with medication.
Wow. Like I joke around and say, it's not like the cat spit up a hairball, right? This was a sick
cat. She said there was some incident with a ladder in the last two days. You did something
with a ladder. I haven't touched a ladder in weeks, right? But her mom had been at a wedding
just two days before and everybody was running around. They needed a ladder to fix some
decoration. Nobody could find it. And all of a sudden it popped up. So that's the ladder. That's
not big, but the other one was, but it's accurate. I said, she shows me you have white Christmas
lights up inside your house right now. And it was October. And she said, oh yeah, they run up
the banister. We have them there all the time year round. So there you go. You couldn't possibly
know those things. And even before we started recording this episode, you were giving me some
messages, which was very sweet of you. I mean, these guys know I don't hide anything. So you
could have done it during the show, but you were giving me some messages from Sammy and things he
was showing you. And one of the things was a cowlick that nobody knows about, but it was in
the front of his head and it was very small, but it drove him crazy. And you were like, yeah,
he's showing me a little like cowlick or something in the front of his head as evidence that it's
him and that I'm getting him. And that also he alluded to the penises he used to draw on my
artwork. She's not going to find that online, right? I know. And Susan was like, you've talked
about the little bit I've watched. You've talked about how sensitive he is, but he's really goofy
and he's showing me this stick figure thing he drew. I was like, yep. And also a squirrel that
he's been playing with and sending a squirrel. And we have a squirrel in our yard that is driving
our dog insane and like heckles him. It's like a sitcom, the two of them. And it didn't even
occur to me that Sammy was behind the squirrel, but evidently he gave Suzanne the message that
Yes. When they say messages like he did that, I'm watching you, mom. I always say,
prove it. And he showed me that he had watched you. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That he watched
me. I mean, I dance a lot, but usually when I show it on social media, I'm showing how I'm
using it to move emotion or to move some energy. But just last night I was in the kitchen and a
song came on, I just started grooving and dancing. And I was like, Oh, I'm happy. Like I had this
moment where I was like, Oh, I'm happy dancing around the kitchen. You know, he saw you being
happy and he was celebrating. I love that. Yeah. Yeah. So that was a really beautiful confirmation
to take a minute to tell us about, I know you wrote a whole book about Wolf, but this was one
of your earlier experiences in mediumship, but it was so profound and explicit and beautiful.
Can you tell that story a little bit? I am thrilled that Wolf's message, my book is being
made into a documentary as we speak. It'll be out next year because Wolf is a young man who was
struck and killed by lightning, like my stepdaughter, but he left proof a day before it
happened that he knew he was going to be killed by lightning and he knew where it was going to
happen. There's so much more to the proof part that makes that story almost unbelievable,
but we have the physical proof of this. But what makes his story so important for all of us is that
he came to me after I agreed to do a reading for his parents before the reading, a drop-in like
your son Sammy did with me before this session today. And he gave me 45 pieces of information
about himself and said, have this verified by my parents like you do with Dr. Gary Schwartz
at the University of Arizona, and they sent the data to Dr. Schwartz, and he said, this is
historic, actually, to have no feedback from the family and to get this kind of accuracy about this
young man. But that just let me know, okay, we've got him. That was the evidence part.
But then when in his reading, what he came back to share with all of us that took a couple months
to figure out what he was getting at, but it's like following the breadcrumbs in this spiritual
mystery. He came back to tell us that we as a species are out of balance, that we're too much
in the head and not enough in the heart. Amen. Another way, too much in the left brain, not
enough in the right brain. And that the true way to find freedom from suffering and pain is balance.
And so I'm just so grateful this documentary is going to get out there and hopefully be watched
by lots of people because that's the message we need right now. We need it more than ever.
Yeah. Well, I think you're amazing. I know I'm one of millions of people that say that to you
every day, but I am so grateful to you and to the work that you're, and for the work that you're
doing in the world. We're going to put all the links to your books. The new book just came out,
Mediumship, the book, the other book, which is beautiful. I mean, she's written lots of books,
But The Awakened Way, that's a book that I like refer all my spiritual newbies to who are like
wanting to start this path, wanting to open up to something larger than themselves, don't know
where to start. That's just such a beautiful place to start. And there's so many practical
techniques in there. So I'll put links to that and to your website and to your YouTube channel
and everything else. But is there anything that you want to leave us with before we go?
you don't have to, but I like it. I love these questions that always come up at the end of
interviews because it gives me a chance to tune in fresh and model for everybody. We can always
get a fresh answer. Don't rely on what you always say. And right now, first time they've ever said
this, but people must need to hear it. Don't give up hope. And the hope can be found within.
So please do that Sip of the Divine. It's on the YouTube channel. Just do a search for Sip of the
divine and it's so simple and it will change your life if you stick with it. Yeah, I've been doing
it. Yay. Thank you, Suzanne Giesemann for everything. Oh, Laura, thank you for the chance
to share with more people and for what you're doing for everybody. Beautiful.
