Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - The Missing Step in Healing Your Attachment Style
Episode Date: June 8, 2026Have you ever found yourself reacting in a relationship and thinking, Why am I doing this again? Maybe you've read the books. Taken the attachment style quizzes. You know you're anxious, avoidant, or... somewhere in between. You understand where the pattern came from. And yet when you're triggered, all that insight seems to disappear. You still send the text. You still pull away. You still shut down, chase, overthink, or panic. Because awareness is important, but awareness alone doesn't create change. Real healing happens when your nervous system begins to trust that you are no longer living in the conditions that created those patterns in the first place. In this Bite, I walk you through what it actually takes to move toward secure attachment. Not by forcing yourself to behave differently, but by learning how to respond to your triggers with awareness, compassion, and new experiences that teach your brain and body a different way to love. Whether you're trying to break lifelong relationship patterns, understand a partner whose reactions leave you confused, or simply learn how to feel safer and more secure in love, this episode offers a practical roadmap for change. In this episode you'll learn: Why understanding your attachment style is only the first step toward healing How to recognize when your attachment system has been activated before it takes over The difference between what your wounded self wants and what you actually need How to pause long enough for your grounded adult self to step in Simple ways to soothe your nervous system instead of relying on someone else to regulate your emotions The hidden childhood beliefs that continue to shape your relationships today Small "opposite actions" that help retrain your brain and build security over time When attachment wounds may actually be rooted in deeper trauma Three powerful questions to ask yourself in moments of activation that can change the course of a relationship Secure attachment isn't something you're born with or without. It's something you can build. One moment, one choice, and one new experience at a time. If this episode had you thinking, “Wait, this is exactly what I do,” you are not alone. That is why I created Quantum Love to help you move from simply understanding your attachment style to actually changing the patterns that keep standing in the way of the love you want. Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've been helping people navigate
love, intimacy, desire, and relationships with more clarity and confidence.
Welcome to Language of Love Bites.
These are short, direct episodes where I answer your most asked questions and tackle the topics
you really want to talk about, often around sex, dating, intimacy, and the messy realities
of modern relationships.
let's get fluent together in the language of love. So you know your attachment style. Maybe you
recognize yourself in some of the styles I'm describing, and you're recognizing or already
know how it's affecting your love life. And the natural question you're going to ask is,
okay, now that I have a sense of my attachment style, how do I actually change this?
how do I stop reacting from my old wounds and start responding from my grounded adult self
this is exactly where transformation begins knowing your attachment pattern is powerful
but learning to soften it and eventually shift it is what creates secure love so let's talk about
how to do that. The first step is in noticing that your attachment system has been activated.
Your body will actually tell you before your mind does. It's that quickened heartbeat,
tightness in the chest, the urge to withdraw, the urge to chase, the fear that someone is pulling
away. Those sensations are very often your younger self saying, this feels really familiar. This feels
like the past. So instead of reacting automatically, pause and label it. Oh, this is my attachment
system talking. Just that simple pause actually will create space for change. The second step
is asking what your adult self actually needs. Your old pattern wants to protect you the only
way it knows how by clinging, distancing, shutting down, or trying to control the outcome. But the
adult you has more options. So you can ask yourself, what do I really need right now to feel
safe? Maybe it's your adult self having a conversation with your little self, right? But
you want your adult self to be in the driver's seat. So you can ask yourself or maybe your inner
child? What do you need? Maybe it's reassurance. Maybe it's setting a boundary. Maybe you need to
clarify something. Maybe you need five minutes to breathe before responding. Separating impulse
from actual need or action is a huge part of the healing. And the third step is learning to
regulate your nervous system inside your own body. Most insecure attachment reactions come
from trying to calm your anxiety through another person's behavior or controlling that behavior,
the text back, the apology, the attention, the closeness. But real security comes from learning
to self-soothe. So learn to do that. Slow down your breath. Put your hand on your heart. Feel
your feet on the floor. Remind yourself, I'm safe in this moment. And when your body calms,
That's when clarity returns.

The fourth step is rewriting the old story of your childhood and the one that childhood gave
you. Because every attachment wound comes with a narrative. I'm too much. I'm definitely going
to be abandoned. No one shows up for me in the end. I can't trust anyone. Intimacy isn't safe.
Any of those sound familiar? These stories are really powerful because they were survival
strategies, but they are rarely true now. And when you hear an old story rise up, you can acknowledge
it like you would a child who's feeling a lot of fear and gently offer a new one. I am a grown-up
now. I can communicate my needs. I am worth consistency. I can take my time. I deserve secure
love. You're not lying to yourself. You're updating the script. And the fifth step,
the one that really rewires attachment, is taking small opposite actions. So if you usually chase,
if that's your pattern, try pausing. If usually you shut down, try staying. Stay in the conversations,
maybe even for 30 more seconds. If you usually withdraw, try expressing one honest feeling.
If you tend to test your partner, try actually asking for what you really need. These tiny
opposite actions teach your nervous system that new endings are possible. Now, I want to add
something important here. If your attachment patterns come from trauma, especially childhood
trauma, emotional neglect, really unpredictable caregiving, physical sexual abuse, emotional abuse,
frightening family environments, then these reactions were once survival tools. And in those
cases, shifting attachment is absolutely possible, but you definitely may need more support. If you
notice panic responses, or you disassociate, you leave your body, you lose time, or you flood
emotionally, or you chronically shut down, or relationships feel unsafe rather than just
uncomfortable, those are all signs that you need to maybe consider working with a trauma-informed
therapist or a somatic healer that can help you move through these patterns safely. There is
absolutely no shame in that, and sometimes your younger self really needs that backup.
So here's a simple practice to begin with. The next time you feel triggered, pause and ask yourself three questions. One, is this my younger self or my adult self reacting this way right now? Two, what do I really need? My adult self supporting my child self. And three, what is one small opposite action I can take?
these three questions will create a doorway to secure attachment you are not broken you are not
doomed to repeat the past you're learning new ways to love and to be loved from the most grounded
wise adult part of yourself you want more tools you can always visit healwithlaura.com
