Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman.
And for the last 30 years, I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be
loved better.
Welcome to the Language of Love Bites, where I tackle your most asked questions and requested
topics.
These episodes are designed to be fun, quick, and to the point.
It's time we all become fluent in the language of love.
If you're wondering if your relationship has what it takes to go the distance,
in this episode, I'm going to break down the one powerful question that can predict
your relationship's future. And at the end, I'm going to share a two-minute exercise that will
reveal whether your love is built for lasting growth or just temporary comfort. You don't want
to miss this one. So the question about the future of your relationship goes well beyond
surface-level compatibility. Of course, there's shared interests, physical attraction, and that
drives the foundation of long-lasting, fulfilling relationships. But it's mutual growth and
inspiration that really determines the lasting power. So what we're going to do in this video
is help you assess whether your partner supports your evolution and whether your connection
encourages you to thrive individually as well as a team. So why is growth important to long-term
success? Well, first of all, people naturally grow and evolve over time, whether we want to or not.
And so if the relationship doesn't allow space for this, that's what we're talking about when
we say that a couple grows apart. So a growth-oriented partnership encourages learning
new things and overcoming challenges together and exploring individual passions while staying
connected. So maybe in a couple, one partner returns to school to advance their career while
the other offers emotional and practical support and celebrates those milestones as shared success.
So questions to ask yourself to evaluate how compatible you are in the growth department.
First of all, do I feel supported when I express my goals and dreams?
Does my partner encourage me to stretch beyond my comfort zone or do they hold me back?
Are we both open to change or is one of us resistant?
Now, key behaviors to look for to answer these questions, does your partner have a genuine
interest in your personal growth?
Do they ask you about your day?
Do they support your interests?
Are they curious about what you're up to?
Are they open to new ideas you bring to them?
How willing are they to adapt to life circumstances and challenges?
That's why I think it's really important before you commit permanently to someone to go through
something difficult or even they go through something difficult in their own lives,
are they adaptable? Are they resilient? Are they willing to adapt to changes?
And do they encourage you to pursue hobbies? Do they support you in creating space for that,
for self-care, even career advancement? These are important things to explore. And the red flags
you're probably looking for is a partner who belittles or dismisses your ambitions or is
unwilling to compromise or doesn't really want to grow alongside you or at all.
When we talk about being inspired by your partner, that's a huge part of a long-term
successful relationship. So what does it mean to be inspired? Your partner certainly doesn't need
to be perfect to inspire you, but their values, their actions, or character should ignite admiration
in you and even motivate you to be a better version of yourself. So do you feel proud of
how they treat others, their work ethic, or their personal growth? Are their strengths complementary
to your own? So if your partner's patience encourages you to be more understanding or
their creativity inspires you to try something new or think outside the box, those are good signs
that they're going to be an inspiring partner for your growth.
Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman. I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years. And
the main question I always get asked is, how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term monogamous
relationship? Well, if you want to take your love life, your sex life to the next level,
whether you're in a relationship or not, check out my free course on quantum sex.
It's going to teach you how to take your sexual response to the next level capable of full body
orgasms, how to use sex magic to manifest your dreams and how to connect on an even deeper level
sexually with your partner. Just go to drlauraberman.com and you'll find it right

So practical exercise is to explore this question together. First of all, I love the vision
exercise. So sit down together and write individual vision boards. You don't have to
make them visually, but write them for your future, including personal, profession, and
relationship goals. And then compare them. See where the shared goals are. Discuss how you can
support each other in achieving those goals. A monthly growth check-in is really valuable in a
long-term relationship. So schedule a monthly conversation where you're talking about what's
working well in the relationship. What personal goals are we each working on? How can we support
one another's goals and growth? And complement journaling is another favorite of mine. So each
of you keep a journal throughout the month where you jot down moments when the other has inspired
you? Share these entries during date nights or time together to reinforce that mutual admiration.
Now, are you ready for the two-minute exercise I promised? It's called the mirror test. It's a
quick and powerful exercise that helps you assess whether your partner aligns with your long-term
growth and inspires you to be your best self. So here's how you do it. You can grab a mirror
literally or figuratively and sit down or just close your eyes and visualize yourself if you're
not looking in a mirror and reflect on the version of yourself you've become so far in this
relationship. Ask yourself two questions. Am I proud of the person I've become while being with
my partner? And do I see myself growing into the person I want to be if this relationship continues?
Assess your answers. If the answers are a confident yes, you're likely in a relationship
that supports your growth, aligns with your values, and inspires you. If there's hesitation
that creeps in or you're uncertain, it's an opportunity just to explore what might be missing
or where adjustments are needed, either in the relationship or perhaps within yourself.
But by asking if you can grow with this person and if they inspire you to be your best self,
you're moving beyond the physical and the stories of what you want or don't want in a partner.
And you're able to evaluate whether your relationship fosters a lifelong journey
of mutual evolution and support, because those are the relationships.
those are the quote-unquote perfect partners and perfect relationships that go the distance
