Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - The Truth About Performance Anxiety (And What’s Really Happening)

Episode Date: March 30, 2026

Sex is one of the most vulnerable experiences you can have. You are naked, literally and emotionally. So how do you build sexual confidence? Most people think it comes down to performance, size, or st...amina. But the truth is, most men lose confidence long before anything physical even happens. It begins in the mind. In this Language of Love Bite, I break down the real roots of sexual insecurity and share a practical, neuroscience-backed path to building unshakable confidence. Most men believe confidence means never losing an erection or always knowing the right move. But that pressure to perform is exactly what shuts down your arousal response. I explain why sexual insecurity is not a character flaw. It is a nervous system response. When you go into fight-or-flight mode during intimacy, your body literally cannot stay aroused. The solution is not trying harder. It is learning how to stay calm and grounded when you feel exposed or vulnerable. I also explore the stories we tell ourselves after one bad experience. That mental loop of “I’m not good enough” or “She’s going to lose interest” quickly becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I show you how to interrupt that pattern and replace it with a grounded, earned confidence so you stop abandoning yourself when things do not go perfectly. I break down: Why sexual confidence is about comfort with the unknown, not control The connection between your nervous system and performance issues (erection loss, premature ejaculation, numbness) Real signs of  sexual confidence What women actually find sexy (It’s not perfection, it’s presence) The "pre-game grounding drill": a simple 5-breath practice to shift from pressure to safety How to anchor small wins after sex to retrain your brain The daily 3-minute mirror affirmation that rewires how you show up sexually Why the most confident men are the ones who choose to show up with honesty and heart, over and over again Don’t forget to visit my website and check out my free Quantum Sex course to take your connection and pleasure to the next level. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've been helping people navigate love, intimacy, desire, and relationships with more clarity and confidence. Welcome to Language of Love Bites. These are short, direct episodes where I answer your most asked questions and tackle the topics you really want to talk about, often around sex, dating, intimacy, and the messy realities of modern relationships. Let's get fluent together in the language of love. Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman,
Starting point is 00:00:37 and we're gonna talk about something most men struggle with, but few talk about openly, sexual confidence. Maybe you've had some performance issues, or maybe you're worried about your size, your stamina, maybe your experience level, or you've been rejected and now you're in your head about it.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Whatever the story is, I want you to know two things. First, every confident man you've ever admired has had to build that confidence. It's not magic. And number two, sexual confidence isn't about being perfect. It's about being present, curious, and grounded in your body. At the end of this video, I'm going to give you a practice that takes about three minutes a day and will completely shift how you show up sexually. Let's get into it and start with why sexual insecurity happens in the first place. Sex is one of the most vulnerable things you can do. You're naked, literally and emotionally. Your body, your performance, your desirability, it all feels pretty exposed, right? And the moment
Starting point is 00:01:46 you think you have to perform or impress someone, your nervous system is always going to kick in. You stop being present. You start second guessing your moves. Most men were not taught how to handle that. They were just taught to get hard, last long and make her come. No one told them how to breathe. No one explained to you how to stay calm or how to feel pleasure for yourself, not just as a means to an end.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So if you've struggled, it's not because something's wrong with you. It's because you were never taught the skills. So we're going to change that. okay? Most men define confidence as never losing an erection or always knowing what to do or never being rejected. But here's what real sexual confidence looks like. It looks like being calm and steady in your body, even when things don't go perfectly. It means being able to check in with your partner without feeling ashamed, being curious and open instead of feeling like you have to prove yourself. Confidence is not about control. It's about comfort with the unknown.
Starting point is 00:02:56 It's knowing I've got this, even if it doesn't go exactly as I imagined or planned. That mindset is incredibly sexy. Women don't expect or want perfection. They want presence. Now, if you've ever lost your erection during sex or finished too quickly or gone numb, it's not just a performance problem it's a nervous system problem your body's going into fight or flight and that shuts down your arousal response and makes you feel even more insecure to build sexual confidence you have to train your body to stay relaxed even when you're feeling vulnerable so here's a simple practice the pre-game grounding drill okay do this before a date a hookup or even on your own. Sit or stand with both feet on the floor. Take five slow breaths, shorter on the
Starting point is 00:03:54 inhale than the exhale. So inhale through your nose for the count of four. Exhale through your mouth for the count of six. Do that five times. And with each exhale, let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw soften. Maybe place a hand on your lowered belly and remind yourself, I don't have to perform. I just have to show up. Do this regularly, and you are going to actually rewire your system to associate sex with safety instead of pressure. Most men have one bad sexual experience, and then they replay it forever. It becomes this story. I'm not good enough. I'm broken. Women lose interest in me. I can't last long enough. Whatever that is, you've got to replace that story with something real and earned. So here's how. After every sexual experience that
Starting point is 00:04:52 feels good, even if it's small, anchor it. Write it down and say aloud, she said I made her feel safe. Or I stayed in my body when I felt nervous. Or I slowed down and felt pleasure instead of brushing. These are wins, and these wins are how you retrain your brain to trust yourself again. Confidence isn't built by avoiding mistakes. It's built by showing up, learning, and not abandoning yourself when things don't go perfectly. Now, here's the daily practice that will completely change your sexual energy over time. Once a day, morning or night, just take three minutes to do this. Stand in front of the mirror, make eye contact with yourself and say out loud, I am a powerful, grounded, generous lover. My confidence grows every time I show up with honesty and heart.
Starting point is 00:05:49 I am a powerful, grounded, generous lover. My confidence grows every time I show up with honesty and heart. Yes, it may feel awkward. Do it anyway, because what you say to yourself neurologically shapes how you show up. This is what elite athletes know. And what you believe becomes how you behave. The most sexually confident men are the ones who choose to show up with love for themselves and their partners over and over again.
