Hey, I'm sex, love and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman.
And for the last 30 years, I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be
loved better.
Welcome to the Language of Love Bites, where I tackle your most asked questions and requested
topics.
These episodes are designed to be fun, quick and to the point.
It's time we all become fluent in the language of love.
why you're feeling disconnected and how to fix it in five minutes a day. Now, if you felt like
the spark in your relationship is dimmed, believe me, you are not alone. It is basically going to
happen in almost every long-term relationship. But the good news is it doesn't take some huge
grand gesture to bring back the connection. In just five minutes a day, you can start to feel
closer than ever. And I'm going to show you exactly how. And at the end of this episode,
I'm going to share the most powerful five-minute ritual you can use to deepen intimacy starting
tonight. So here are the things you need to understand about really fueling reconnection
when you've been disconnected. First of all, you have to identify what's causing the disconnection.
Is it stress going on in your life?
Is it too much technology distracting you from each other?
Is it that you aren't investing enough time together in your relationship?
So once you find out what's causing the disconnection, you can also start to remove those blocks to
connection, which will immediately improve things.
It's also important to understand that it is small, consistent actions that build connection.
So try daily micro rituals like eye gazing for one minute.
That means that you sit across or stand across from each other and just look into each other's
eyes.
One minute is actually a really long time when you're doing this, and it's been shown
to definitely increase feelings of intimacy in couples.
Or take a moment to kiss them more than just a peck as you're walking by or as you're saying
goodbye, hello, the beginning of the day, the end of the day.
Send a loving text when you get to work just to let them know you're thinking about them.
Those are all micro rituals you can work into your daily life that will make a huge difference
in rebuilding a connection in a disconnected relationship.
The other thing that will help is practicing active listening.
So ask your partner one meaningful question a day, even if it's how was your day, what
was the best and worst part of it. And give them your undivided attention. Don't interrupt them
and tell them about your day or ask them a question about something else. Really sit there
quietly and let them talk and let them share. And if you do ask questions, ask clarifying questions,
but really try to draw them out and give them the experience of your full undivided attention.
And at the end of the day, do something just for five minutes, a gratitude hug, where you hug each other and you share something that you really appreciate about each other, or you cuddle each other and listen to music.
It doesn't have to take long, but if you invest in undistracted quality time with a physical connection involved, and it doesn't have to be sexual, and if you've been feeling disconnected, it probably isn't sexual.
But if you can connect even in a non-sexual way, but physically as well as emotionally, let your partner feel seen and heard and understood and valued and them make you feel that way too, you will be surprised at how quickly you can get that car back on the road and out of the cornfields that is your relationship, right?
Because in a long-term relationship, that's what happens.
We tend to veer off course and the next thing you know, we're out of the cornfields.
So we want to bring it back to center, get the relationship back on the road.
Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman.
I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years.
And the main question I always get asked is,
how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term monogamous relationship?
Well, if you want to take your love life, your sex life to the next level,
whether you're in a relationship or not, check out my free course.
on quantum sex. It's going to teach you how to take your sexual response to the next level
capable of full body orgasms, how to use sex magic to manifest your dreams, and how to connect on an
even deeper level sexually with your partner. Just go to drlauraberman.com and you'll find it

Finally, here's a five-minute ritual that I call the heart-to-heart hold that I find people really
love. So you're going to sit together where you can face each other, cross-legged or on chairs.
You're going to gently hold one another's hands, but you hold one hand of your partner and you
place your other hand, your right hand, over their heart. And they place their right hand over yours.
So your left hands are holding each other, your right hands are on one another's hearts.
And now you can close your eyes, take a few deep breaths together, but sync your breathing,
okay?
Match the rhythm of your inhalations and exhalations so that you're breathing in tandem.
And from that place of synchronized breathing, hands on hearts, share gratitude.
Take turns sharing one thing you appreciate about each other.
and you start with the phrase, I am so grateful for you because, and you fill in the blank.
And then you close this little heart-to-heart hold exercise with intention. So you end by
setting a joint intention for the day or the week, such as let's focus on supporting each other this
week, or let's make time for laughter together this week. Just set an intention because that
then becomes the compass that you can build on throughout the rest of the week together.
If you do this five-minute ritual once a week for a while, or indefinitely, you will notice
a big increase in the level of connection and appreciation you feel for one another.
So there you go. If you like this episode, make sure to follow and make sure to let me know if
there's a topic you want me to cover. I'm always here for you, helping you learn to love and be
That's bad.
