Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Why Desire Fades in Relationships (And How to Bring it Back)

Episode Date: April 27, 2026

If your sex life has slowed down… or feels like it disappeared altogether… it doesn’t mean the love is gone. What it usually means is something far more common. Your body, your mind, and your r...elationship rhythms are out of sync. And the good news? That can change. In this episode, I break down why desire fades in long-term relationships, and what actually helps bring it back without pressure, shame, or forcing anything. You’ll discover: Why low desire is rarely about attraction and what’s actually driving the disconnect beneath the surface The hidden nervous system shift that can shut down sexual desire even in loving relationships Why emotional overwhelm and mental load quietly lower libido and the small shifts that begin to change it What helps your body feel safe enough to want connection again instead of shutting down or pulling away How couples can re-sync instead of drift apart A simple 1-minute intimacy practice that reduces stress and helps reopen emotional and physical connection How to rebuild closeness without pressure, performance, or needing everything to be fixed first If you’re in a relationship where one of you wants more intimacy and the other feels shut down… this will help you understand what’s really happening underneath the surface and what actually helps bring you back together. Because desire doesn’t disappear. It gets buried under stress, disconnection, and lack of support. And it can come back. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've been helping people navigate love, intimacy, desire, and relationships with more clarity and confidence. Welcome to Language of Love Bites. These are short, direct episodes where I answer your most asked questions and tackle the topics you really want to talk about, often around sex, dating, intimacy, and the messy realities of modern relationships. Let's get fluent together in the language of love. If your relationship has become sexless or you're struggling with low desire, I want you to just take a breath because it doesn't mean that anything is wrong with you or your partner for that matter.
Starting point is 00:00:46 It certainly doesn't mean that the love between you is gone. What it almost always means is that your nervous system is just overwhelmed. you're out of sync, or you're going through a life stage that makes desire much harder to access. I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and I've been helping couples navigate intimacy for more than three decades. And one of the most common questions I hear is, why don't we have sex anymore? And the truth is, the answer is almost never about attraction or compatibility. It's usually about hormones, emotional load, stress, resentments, and the realities of modern life. So let's just start with hormones because they play a much bigger role than most people
Starting point is 00:01:29 realize. After childbirth, a woman's hormones go into total reorganization. Her estrogen drops, her testosterone drops, her prolactin rises, and that alone will take her desire offline. Not to mention sleep deprivation, bodily changes, raising a child, caretaking mode, all of that. And then later in life, you have perimenopause and menopause, which brings another wave of hormonal shifts with dryness, discomfort, anxiety, insomnia, low testosterone. That all makes sex feel like pressure rather than pleasure. And none of this means that she doesn't want her partner.
Starting point is 00:02:06 It means her body needs support. It needs softness and safety to reawaken. And that brings me to the emotional and mental load, which is one of the biggest libido killers, especially for women, because so many women carry the invisible to-do list for the entire family. Everything from the kids' schedules to the household logistics, and when the brain is overwhelmed, the body cannot shift into sensuality. So it's not a lack of desire. It's really a lack of bandwidth. One of the most loving things you can do is help lighten the load without being asked, without treating it like a favor.
Starting point is 00:02:44 And when her nervous system relaxes, her libido has a space to breathe again. For so many women, emotional intimacy comes before sexual intimacy. And if she doesn't feel appreciated, understood, emotionally connected, her body is going to close down. Not because she's trying to reject you, but to protect herself. Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman. I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years, and the main question I always get asked is, how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term monogamous relationship? So if you just share a nightly ritual where you connect, you share appreciations, you talk about your day, you're not trying to fix anything, you're not trying to make anything happen, you're just witnessing, this small connection point will warm you up. and that warms up the erotic field. And of course, almost every couple you need to know
Starting point is 00:04:30 will experience mismatched desire where one partner wants it more and the other less. And that doesn't mean you're incompatible. Some people just need buildup or rest or emotional connection first. Some need spontaneity. You're not off, you're just uncoordinated and coordination can be learned.
Starting point is 00:04:52 So I want to leave you with a simple intimacy practice that you can try tonight. Sit facing each other or side by side. Place your hand on your heart and take a slow inhale for the count of four. Hold for two. Exhale for six. In for four. Hold for two. Exhale for six.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And if you're together, try to sink your breath. If you're alone, imagine your partner sitting next to you. Just one minute of shared presence has been shown to lower stress hormones, to increase the chemical of attachment, oxytocin, and to begin thawing the distance that makes intimacy feel so hard. Just remember this. A sexless relationship is almost never about a lack of love. It's about a lack of space, a lack of support,
Starting point is 00:05:48 And a nervous system that's usually running too fast or running on empty. So with small, consistent changes, desire can absolutely come back.
