Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Why Trying Harder Makes Erections Harder (to Achieve) with Laura Berman

Episode Date: August 17, 2026

You're with someone you're attracted to. Things are going well. You want to have sex. And then your body doesn't respond the way you expected. Within seconds, your mind starts racing. What's wrong ...with me? Why is this happening? What is my partner thinking? For many men, the erection )and whether it works or not) isn't the biggest problem. It's what happens next. The self-doubt. The panic. The pressure. The fear that it will happen again. Ironically, those thoughts are often what keep the cycle going. The truth is, erection difficulties are rarely just about attraction, masculinity, or even desire. More often, they're about what's happening in your nervous system. When your brain shifts from pleasure to performance, your body has a much harder time responding naturally. And if you're the partner of someone who's experienced this, it's easy to assume they're no longer attracted to you. In reality, the opposite is often true. Performance anxiety can happen even in deeply loving, highly desirable relationships. In this Language of Love Bite, I explain what's really happening in the brain and body during erection difficulties, why shame and pressure make the problem worse, and what you can do instead. I also share practical ways partners can help create safety, reduce anxiety, and strengthen intimacy, along with a simple practice you can begin using tonight to feel calmer, more connected, and more confident in the bedroom. In this episode, you'll learn: Why erection difficulties often have nothing to do with masculinity, attraction, or desire How performance anxiety activates your stress response and interferes with arousal What happens when your brain slips into "monitoring mode" Why trying to force an erection usually backfires The connection between chronic stress, nervous system overload, and sexual performance How overstimulation can disconnect you from natural arousal Why slowing down can improve intimacy and sexual response What partners can do to reduce pressure and create emotional safety A simple breathwork exercise to calm your nervous system in the moment Practical strategies to rebuild confidence, trust, and connection without shame Whether you've experienced erection challenges yourself or love someone who has, this episode will help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface and offer practical, compassionate tools to move forward with confidence. If you're ready to go deeper, Sex Magic  explores how to work with the body's energy in ways most people never learn, and my Quantum Sex course  is built to help you create lasting confidence and connection, not just fix a moment. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm sex, love, and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, and for the last 30 years, I've been helping people just like you learn to love and be loved better. Welcome to the Language of Love Bites, where I tackle your most asked questions and requested topics. These episodes are designed to be fun, quick, and to the point. It's time we all become fluent in the language of love. If you've ever struggled to get or stay hard, especially when you really want to, you know how quickly it can turn into panic. One moment you're in the mood and the next your body
Starting point is 00:00:39 shuts down and your confidence can often go with it. But here's the truth. Erectile struggles almost never come from lack of attraction. They come from something much more common and much more fixable. And in this episode, I'm going to show you exactly why this happens and what you can do to get your confidence back. So stay with me because toward the end, I'm going to give you a simple practice that can shift things immediately. After decades of working with men and couples, I can tell you that erection issues are not a sign of failure or lack of masculinity or lack of desire, they're a sign that your mind and nervous system is overriding your body. And we can absolutely work with that. So let's start with the biggest cause,
Starting point is 00:01:29 performance pressure. The moment you think, I hope I can stay hard, your brain will switch into monitoring mode instead of pleasure mode. Monitoring mode is the enemy of erections. When your brain starts watching, judging, worrying, your body pulls back blood flow. That's not dysfunction. That's biology. Your brain literally cannot be in arousal and anxiety at the same time. The second major cause is stress and nervous system overload. If you're carrying work stress, financial worry, relationship tension, or even just
Starting point is 00:02:05 mental exhaustion. Your body is going to prioritize survival resources, not sexual ones. And erections require relaxation, not motivation or willpower, relaxation. When your nervous system is activated, your arousal system gets quiet. The third cause is habitual stimulation patterns, especially online stimulation. So if you're used to fast, intense visual stimulation, Your body becomes conditioned to a different kind of arousal curve than what happens with a partner. This doesn't mean porn ruined you. It means your brain adapted to it.
Starting point is 00:02:47 The good news is it can adapt back. And the fourth cause is lack of warmup. Most men are ready quickly, not all of them, but many. But the body still needs time to build arousal in a partnered context. if you try to move too fast your mind outruns your body and the erection can collapse so when you slow down kiss more touch more breathe more your body can catch up and the fifth cause and this is rarely talked about is fear of letting your partner down when you care about someone you want to perform well but ironically caring too much about performance often creates the
Starting point is 00:03:27 very struggle you're trying to avoid. Your partner does not need perfection. They need presence. And here's something you may not realize. Many partners interpret erectile challenges as stress, not necessarily rejection. What hurts them isn't the softening. It's the silence and the avoidance. So if you say something simple like, I'm really into you, but my body's just overwhelmed right now, you instantly relieve their anxiety and your own. Now let's talk about how to rebuild erectile confidence. The first step is slowing the entire experience down. Take the pressure off the erection by shifting focus to kissing, touching, connection. When the erection isn't the goal, it returns much more easily. The second step is breath control.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Short, shallow breaths push your body toward climax or collapse. Slow exhalations, long, steady out breaths help your body reset, rebuild blood flow, and stay regulated. The third step is sensation focus. Instead of thinking, is it working? Ask yourself, what feels good right now? Focus on warmth, pressure, texture, your partner's breath, the curve of their neck. Your body follows attention. If attention goes to anxiety, your erection follows anxiety if attention goes to pleasure your erection follows pleasure and the last step is reconditioning your nervous system so you can retrain your arousal pattern by slowing down your self-pleasure practice use your breath change your rhythm bring your awareness
Starting point is 00:05:14 into your body instead of your screen this teaches your brain to stay present and aroused in real time. And as promised, here is a simple practice that you can start using tonight. It's called the anchor and expand technique. When you're getting intimate, choose one place in your body to anchor your attention, your breath, your chest, your hands on your partner's skin. Feel that one point fully. Once your anxiety softens, slowly expand your awareness outward. Anchor, then expand. This keeps you present, grounded, and in your body rather than in your head. And erections thrive on presence. Remember, erectile confidence isn't about being perfect. It's about understanding how your body works and supporting it instead of fighting it. And you can absolutely get that
Starting point is 00:06:15 confidence back. For more tools, guidance, and support, you can always visit healwithlaura.com. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to follow on your favorite platform. you
