Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Why Your Desire Disappeared (And How to Get It Back)

Episode Date: May 25, 2026

What if low libido is not a problem to fix, but a message your body is trying to send you? Most people assume desire disappearing means something is wrong. Wrong relationship. Wrong attraction. Wron...g body. But what if that assumption is exactly what keeps people stuck? Because desire does not disappear randomly. It responds. It shifts with stress, pressure, emotional load, exhaustion, and disconnection. When the system feels overwhelmed, shutting down can be a form of protection, not failure. In this Language of Love Bite, we explore what it means when your body stops saying yes, and why the usual explanations about attraction often miss what is actually happening underneath. This is not about fixing libido. It is about understanding what it is responding to in the first place. And when that changes, the way you relate to desire starts to change too. Why low libido may not signal loss of attraction, but a nervous system response to overload that most people overlook Why desire often fades in moments where emotional, mental, or physical pressure quietly accumulates What becomes possible when you stop interpreting shutdown as dysfunction and start reading it as information Why attempts to “fix” libido can intensify disconnection instead of restoring desire How your relationship to stress, safety, and emotional space directly shapes access to desire The subtle shift that helps libido return without force, pressure, or performance This is not about performance or pressure. It is about learning how your system communicates through desire, and what changes when you stop overriding it. Because libido is not just about attraction. It is about whether your system feels safe enough to open. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've been helping people navigate love, intimacy, desire, and relationships with more clarity and confidence. Welcome to Language of Love Bites. These are short, direct episodes where I answer your most asked questions and tackle the topics you really want to talk about, often around sex, dating, intimacy, and the messy realities of modern relationships. let's get fluent together in the language of love. If you're in a relationship where one or both of your libidos feels low or totally gone, please hear me. Nothing is wrong with you. Desire is one
Starting point is 00:00:45 of the most sensitive indicators of your emotional, your physical, and your hormonal health. It reacts to everything. Stress, sleep, hormones, grief, medications, relationship dynamics, and it's designed to shut down when you're overwhelmed. Libido isn't a moral issue. It's a wellness issue. And the good news is that it's absolutely possible to restore it. That's what we're talking about on this episode of Language of Love. I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and low desire is something I see every single day in my practice. And almost every time the person sitting across from me believes that they're broken or failing, and I promise you they're not. What's really happening is that their body is delivering important information. And when you listen to that
Starting point is 00:01:40 information, desire actually becomes much easier to rekindle. What can go wrong and what you can do to fix it and recharge your desire. So let's talk about hormones first, because they are foundational to libido. When estrogen drops, sex can feel uncomfortable or even painful. And when testosterone drops, and remember, women need testosterone too, desire fades. And sexual sensation and response is more difficult as well. Then when cortisol, your stress hormone rises, the nervous system can't shift into a sensual framework. Medications, especially antidepressants, can also dampen desire, and hormonal contraceptives can also negatively affect your hormonal balance. So all of this is normal and treatable.
Starting point is 00:02:36 You want to talk to your doctor, get a hormonal panel, maybe consider some vaginal estrogen if you're having dryness. Adrenal support if your cortisol is high. You have to address sleep. Sometimes you have to adjust medications with your doctor, and that can make an enormous difference. But let's talk about stress and mental overload because your brain cannot be in survival mode and sexual mode at the same time. It just doesn't work that way. So if you're running from task to task, carrying the emotional labor for the family, or one or both of you is exhausted, your libido is naturally going to go quiet. It's not because you're avoiding. It's your system's way of protecting itself. And one of the best things you can do is create small pockets of rest,
Starting point is 00:03:31 even five minutes of stillness, a hot shower, a walk outside, something nourishing. These tiny resets actually open the door to desire. Relationship dynamics I want to talk about too, because that is another huge factor. Desire thrives with emotional safety. And when there is unresolved conflict, resentments that have been building, disconnection, or a lack of affection, the body closes down. Not because love is gone, but because emotional tension and sexual openness monogamous can't coexist. Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman. I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years. And the main question I always get asked is how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term monogamous relationship? Well, if you want to take your love life, your sex life

So a simple check-in daily, talking about how you're feeling, will increase emotional closeness, bring desire back online. And body image, that plays a big role too. So if you feel self-conscious or ashamed or disconnected from your body, sexuality
Starting point is 00:05:27 can leave you feeling too vulnerable. And you don't need to love your body to feel sexual again. You just need to feel safe in it. So I often encourage people to explore gentle self-touch, warm baths, sensual fabrics, mindful movement that reconnects you with your senses and with your pleasure. And remember, your partner is not noticing the cellulite, the pockets of fat, the folds that you are so self-conscious of unless you're constantly pointing them out to them. So let me give you a few ways to gently reignite desire. First, start with sensuality, not sexuality. So touch yourself,
Starting point is 00:06:10 not even in the sexual center, slowly. Feel warm water on your skin. Attune to all of your senses. Second, create micro moments of pleasure every day, whether it's lighting a candle, turning on some music, wrapping yourself up in something soft. Third, make sure to schedule pressure-free intimacy time. So that's a weekly window where the goal is not sex. The goal is closeness. The pressure is off. You're just spending quality time together. And finally, foster that emotional closeness daily. Even 30 seconds of genuine connection will shift your desire. Remember, your libido isn't broken. It's communicating, and everything it's telling you is workable. Now, if you want deeper support reconnecting with your desire, you can find lots
