Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman - Why your partner's porn use hurts so much with Laura Berman
Episode Date: August 19, 2026Few discoveries can shake your confidence quite like finding out your partner watches pornography. Suddenly, it's easy to wonder if you're enough. You start comparing yourself to people on a screen, ...questioning your body, your desirability, and even your relationship. Even if your partner insists it has nothing to do with you, the hurt can feel very real. But what if the greatest threat to your relationship isn't pornography itself? What if it's the story your mind begins telling you the moment you discover it? In this Language of Love Session, I answer a question from Priya, who recently learned that her partner watches porn and doesn't know what to do next. She doesn't want to control his behavior, but she also can't ignore the insecurity, resentment, and self-doubt that have crept into their relationship and into their sex life. Together, we'll explore why our brains are so quick to compare ourselves to impossible standards, what pornography does and doesn't necessarily mean in a relationship, and how to rebuild your sense of confidence regardless of your partner's choices. We'll also talk about when porn is relatively benign, when it may signal a larger issue, and how to have an honest conversation without shame, blame, or ultimatums. You'll learn: Why discovering porn use can trigger such intense feelings of insecurity The stories we tell ourselves that make the pain even worse When pornography is relatively harmless and when it becomes a relationship concern How comparison quietly erodes intimacy and self-confidence What actually creates lasting sexual attraction in a long-term relationship How to talk with your partner about porn without attacking or shutting down Practical ways to rebuild your erotic confidence and feel desirable again If this episode brings up a question of your own, email me at languageoflovepod@gmail.com or leave a voicemail at languageoflovepod.com. Hey, I'm Dr. Laura Berman, and for more than 30 years, I've worked with individuals and
couples to help them build deeper, healthier relationships with one another and with themselves.
Welcome to Language of Love Sessions.
This is where I work one-on-one with you, my listeners, in real time.
These sessions are intimate, personal, and grounded in what's actually happening in your
life and relationships.
Let's get started and get fluent in the language of love.
All right, Language of Love sessions.
I love getting your questions.
So many of you email me.
I have hundreds of emails that I love to get through.
But also, if you ever want to leave a voicemail, you can do that at drlauraberman.com slash
languageoflovepod, or you can go to language, or you can email, I should say, to languageoflovepod
at gmail.com.
Here is an email from Priya who says, Dr. Berman, I found out my partner watches porn and I can't stop comparing myself, my body, my energy, my confidence, all of it.
They say it doesn't mean anything, but I feel insecure and I hate how much it affects me.
I don't want to police them, but I also don't want to feel like I'm competing with a fantasy.
How do couples handle porn honestly in a way that protects intimacy and doesn't crush self-esteem?
Priya, this is a tough one because it is pretty much insidious.
I know very, very, very few men, if, I mean, maybe a handful that I have met who, and they're usually for strong religious reasons, don't look at porn.
It is so available to everyone.
And so I think it's really important for women to know, especially, not that women don't sometimes look at it too, but that men definitely are looking at it.
What you also have to understand is that it is a fantasy.
So it doesn't mean that he wants to be with that woman who he is looking at in the porn. It's just the fantasy of what they're doing and pretending in his mind the erotic expression of whatever he's watching.
So when I talk to men, they never say, oh, I wish I could have sex with that woman.
They want to be having sex with their partner, maybe emulating, sort of acting out what they
saw in porn to an extent, but not necessarily having sex with that person.
You could compare yourself to all the other women he's had sex with.
You could compare yourself to the women he sees going to work or hanging out with his
friends that are hot.
it's your decision. It's not up to porn or even your husband or your partner how confident you
are or how much you're comparing yourself, okay? My guess is your partner thinks you're gorgeous
and wants to have sex with you, not that porn star, and is not comparing you, okay?
Hey, it's Dr. Laura Berman. I've been a sex, love, and relationship therapist for over 30 years,
And the main question I always get asked is, how the heck do we spice it up in a long-term
monogamous relationship?

Let me know what you think.
So this is really about your confidence and you deciding that this isn't about being perfect
And this isn't about looking like a porn star. Women get really caught up on this. And yes,
there are a teeny, tiny, tiny, tiny portion of men who are extremely superficial and very,
very focused on looks and only want to be with a woman who looks like a porn star, okay? Fine.
But most men, they don't see all the flaws and cellulite pockets and uneven nipples and whatever
it is that we think are wrong with our bodies, they are not even noticing unless we're constantly
pointing it out to them. They are just so happy to be naked and to have access to us. They are
looking at the whole silhouette. They are feeling the eroticism of the moment and the connection
and you being into it and the physical exchange that's happening. They are not analyzing your body
or comparing you to anything, okay? The only thing that will affect them is if you're shut down and
insecure and self-conscious and inhibited and unwilling to really fully be present and participate
or avoiding it altogether, that will eventually gross them out or shut them down. But if you are
a willing, enthusiastic partner who is fully present and into it and confident, they are not
analyzing your body or comparing you to anyone. This is something, you know, if you want to see
what he sees when he's looking at you, stand naked in front of a mirror. And instead of letting your
eyes go immediately to all those problem areas, like all of us do when we look in the mirror,
just blur your vision out a little bit. Look at the whole curvaceous, gorgeous silhouette.
that is what he is seeing, all right? He is focused on certain areas. He is focused on the
sensation. He is focused on your presence and how into it you are and how into him you are,
and that is what's important. I can't take your insecurities away from you, but my guess is this
isn't the only place where you feel insecure. If you're feeling so inhibited and shut down
because you're imagining your partner comparing you to some imaginary person that you're not even
sure they're looking at or and much less want to be with, you probably have lots of other
insecurities, which is very normal. Lots of us do. But I really encourage you to get a little
support from a counselor or a coach or a therapist to kind of work on self-worth,
work on confidence. Because we all know women who don't look anything close to a movie star,
porn star, model, anything else. They do not meet the ideal standards of beauty in any way. And yet
men can't stay away from them. And it's because of their confidence. It's because of their inner
light. It's because of how they hold themselves. It's because of their presence. It's because of
their own eroticism and enjoyment of their own erotic nature that's what makes you hot okay
so put some attention on that and let us know how it goes and you reach out too if you have
a question i'm always here for you at language of love
i went to the doctor said i'm crazy for your love
I wrote me a prescription
But there's no cure for crying
