I'm NK, and this is Basket Case.
What is wrong with me?
A show about the ways that mental illness is shaped by not just biology.
Swaps of different meds.
But by culture and society.
By looking closely at the conditions that cause mental distress,
I find out why so many of us are struggling to feel sane,
what we can do about it, and why we should care.
Oh, look at you giving me therapy, girl.
Listen to Basket Case every Tuesday on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you
get your podcasts.
Look, man. Oh, I see.
Wow. Oh, and look
over there. Wow, is that culture? Yes.
Oh, my goodness. Wow.
Las Culturistas.
Ding dong! Las Culturistas
calling. A new day.
A brand new day.
And more gifts to be shown, wouldn't you say?
A brand new day and more gifts to be shown and to share.
Here's the thing, Bowen, do you consider yourself a good gift giver?
I really don't know.
I don't know how to self-identify because today I was just like,
oh, should I get gifts for the office?
I was like, well, that's a lot of people.
It's a lot of people it's a lot of people
that i was like but i'm also like that i was i couldn't think of a single thing like here's the
thing miss heidi gardner nails it every year i've heard tell of her gifts she is a sleigh every
christmas will give you thoughtful queen baked goodies queen, candies, gummies queen, things that you can immediately enjoy.
Up in the kitchen, up in the bakery, up in the patisserie,
here, there, everywhere.
And then on Saturday Night Live, on stage, wild, on camera,
slaying Heidi Gardner, thoughtful, talented, and ultimately...
Fashion.
Fashion.
And a queen.
And a queen.
And we celebrate her.
I'm sorry, you were were gonna say ultimately a good
gift giver which i'm not because i'm like i can't think of anything what oh doug is saying mcribs
mcribs for the whole cat for the whole cast and crew yeah get them a mcrib you love it so
oh maybe but truly the dietary restrictions are beautifully diverse um oh that's... Doug says no.
Doug says not to make ribs.
What's Doug trying to say?
Doug, what are you trying to say?
Doug, come in here.
Doug, come in here.
Let's just go.
Doug, come in here now.
Come in here.
Come in here now.
We're going to get your audio.
We're going to get to the bottom of this.
Doug, what are you trying to say?
This is hot engineer Doug.
This is Doug.
Do you feel emboldened?
Because before we got on
bowen said that you looked handsome and hot with your new haircut or like what's what's what's going
on yeah of course i mean who wouldn't be right so doug what are you trying to what are you trying
to say about the mcrib i was just trying to be funny well what were you saying we're considering
what was it we want we want to know i don't think it's a good idea at all oh well no no no really
i of course not i was trying to just for a second just be in that counterfactual space and be like
what would i do i'm just gonna keep my mouth shut from now on i think no you know what though like
if you're gonna insinuate that everyone at SNL should be given the McRib,
then I just want to hear why it's a good idea.
Because as you heard Bowen say, there's a litany of dietary restrictions.
He was just kidding, I guess.
Goodbye.
Bye, Doug.
That was the first time you heard Doug.
It would not be the last.
No, and see, the thing is, our producers, they chime in quite a bit.
And we love their interactions,
but they shouldn't be surprised from this point on.
When we challenge them.
When we say, get on up here and sort of, you know.
Explain yourself.
Explain yourself.
Prove it.
You have a strong opinion?
Welcome to the world stage.
Welcome to the world stage.
Oh my God.
I think this is going to be a theme for this episode.
And I think that this actually is sort of what they call really in Western culture,
a segue.
Yes.
Well, first of all, before we segue, and I will actually know now I feel bad for
undermining your perfect segue.
Yeah.
Oh, this is what I wanted to say.
I think as someone who has received gifts from you,
that you are a very good gift giver because you gave me one of my favorite things.
You gave me a pair of shoes that I love.
I gave you a pair of shoes when I care about the person
and you know how I care about you.
You know that when I look at you,
I feel like...
This is a Whitney Houston song
but anyway go
I have to
I can be thoughtful
when there is thought to be had
like I can't be thoughtful
when I don't really
I can be thoughtful
when there is thought to be had
that is very
Real Housewives reunion of you
I can be thoughtful
when there is thought to be had
but for you darling
there's no thought to be had
it's very
it's like a combination of karen huger with bethany the care the i don't care about you
fuck you attitude of nini and the verbosity of bethany yeah and she's trying to like really
smoke you out in front of and yes yeah. Are you a good gift giver?
No, I think that I'm getting better
now that I have time in the quarantine
to sit around and think like,
what's a good thing to get that person?
If I'm busy,
like it's something I need to prioritize more and don't,
but I've really enjoyed
getting to kind of just take the time
to think early about what I want to get people.
And I'm actually for the first year,
maybe excited about the things that I'm getting from people just because I
think that,
um,
they'll go over well personally.
Yeah.
And it's not just like,
I'd like to get someone,
um,
you know,
an expensive thing.
Yeah.
Like a humidifier.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Or like one of those like small, tiny little humidifiers that like, you know what I mean? Everybody has from Christmas. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, okay. Or like, one of those like, small, tiny,
little humidifiers
that like,
you know what I mean?
Right, that everybody
has from Christmas.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You really went above
and beyond for me
this year for my birthday,
so I can confirm that one,
that you are a good gift giver.
I wanted you to be able
to spin the records,
and I know I'm enjoying
my setup so much.
Like, I have a new
record collection.
It's like my new favorite thing that I'm doing.
Seriously, it's like really filling itself out.
I love that.
It's like been a good hobby.
You are enjoying this.
Oh my God, I'm rediscovering so many good things.
Like I listened to, you know, this isn't too old,
but just like playing Kacey Musgraves.
Hero by Maren Musgraves.
Oh, I was playing, I was listening to Maren,
but like Kacey Musgraves, Gold Tower on the record player.
I said Maren Musgraves, I meant Maren Morris. Sorry, yeah. Maren Musgraves. Oh, I was playing, I was listening to Maren, but like Casey Musgraves, Golden Hour on the record player. I said Maren Musgraves, I meant Maren Morris.
Sorry, yeah.
Maren Musgraves,
she's a superhero.
She combines the powers of
Maren Morris and Casey Musgraves.
Maren Musgraves,
she's a hero.
That's like an animated shot
I would like to see.
Gorgeous.
But anyway,
yeah,
I've been loving Golden Hour
on vinyl.
So good.
And now back to the segment that you set up.
No, hold on for a second.
Remember when you and I were out here telling all the queers to listen to Kacey Musgraves?
We were first.
For years.
First.
You and I emailed our editors at Vulture and we were like, we have to write this piece about Kacey Musgraves.
Mm-hmm.
Everyone needs to
being a gay icon low-key high-key low-key high-key low-key mid-key but like she was being paid dust
by the queers yeah until really recently and i gotta tell you something what i she is has a song
with troy savant coming out you are spilling i If it's not out by the time this comes out,
I'll retract this,
but I saw the music video today.
It is stunning.
Bitch, have you seen the music video
of Kacey Musgraves and Miguel doing it?
I might've talked about this before,
but Miguel has that song Waves.
And then he like did a bunch of like covers of it that he duetted with
other artists.
So I think he might've done this.
I'm making this up,
but he might've done one.
He might've done with the Grimes or something.
And then he did another with Casey and he would switch the genre.
He would switch the,
it was great.
It was genius for waves.
It was like,
it's like slowed down.
And the two of them have the most crazy chemistry I have ever seen.
I mean, she is stunning.
Stunning.
She's like a runway model.
Stunning.
Stunning.
Stunning.
God, we love KC.
Oh, we were talking about vinyls, right?
We were talking about vinyls, but before there was a segue,
which was taking the world stage.
Well, hold on.
Yes. I was going to say it's meaningful that you bought taking the world stage. Well, hold on. Yes.
Oh, I was gonna say it's meaningful that you bought me my first vinyl.
Oh, yes.
Teresa Tang.
Teresa Tang.
And it's like so special.
She's the reason she's like the first musical artist I was ever obsessed with.
So it's all perfect.
So once I get my setup going, it'll be great.
That is what's nice about a vinyl collection, because you're not just going to buy every
album on vinyl.
You're going to buy ones that feel like they're a time and place and that you put energy into them that
you would like to recreate in a special way on a record player because if i ever want to listen to
something disposable like whatever like a single from an artist i haven't invested in i'll just
pop that on like whatever like like spotify whatever i'll play it off my laptop whatever but
to buy an album and like invest in it,
it takes you back to a time and place
and a feeling, which we love.
Say that.
So it's good to start it with
something like Teresa for you.
I love it.
It's beautiful.
I'll remember it always.
Talk about the world stage.
What does it mean when someone
is on the world stage?
There's the period before you're on the world stage.
Yes.
And then there is the period after.
And they call that the great before and the great after of a star's life.
So, for example, in the great before of someone's life, such as, you know, Barbara Streisand, she was sort of, you know.
At the Duplex.
She was a Miskite.
You know, she was a miskite you know she was she was a brooklyn girl and she sort of rose up and started playing
in clubs and places like um the duplex like you were saying and then she rose in the new york
scene hit broadway was startling and funny girl and then in the film she really hit the world
stage and she won an oscar and i think the second day of culture kind of covers that sort of Barbara Streisand
hitting the world stage star is born truly,
if you will,
moment with our second day here,
the figure we're going to be discussing.
The figure we're going to be discussing.
So Matt,
what is on the second day of culture?
It was,
it was it was
gone bond
it was November 11th
2020
Mary
Mary M.
Cosby hits
the world stage
oh my god
Mary is here Mary is here.
Mary is here.
And it's the second most important day of culture in a row of the 12.
As soon as you say the words, Mary M culture hits the word stage.
I'm hit with so many senses.
Mary M culture.
You took Cosby out.
You said Mary M culture.
Bowen said Mary M m culture it's a
mary m cosby bowen said mary m culture it's a rule of culture it's rule of culture number two
mary m cosby bowen said mary m culture but let's just when I say the words, when I say the words, Mary M culture hits the world stage.
I can see it.
I can hear it.
I see it.
I can smell it.
What is she wearing?
What is she wearing when you see her?
She's wearing a metallic blazer, but with the green Christmas tree looking dress.
Yep.
She's wearing that hideous garment.
Hideous garment, but she's wearing a blazer over it.
A metallic blazer over it.
Her hair is down.
She's got
six inch long stilettos,
also metallic, but rose gold
for some reason.
Doesn't echo the metallic
silver from the blazer.
I should have said it was the silver blazer.
I see that, but I see her with her arm on her hip,
and she's literally stepping on a miniature version of planet Earth in space.
It's black behind her,
but she's slamming her heel down on the surface of our planet.
This is one of the most epic things I've ever thought
about. And I
hear this sound on
impact. On impact of her heel
hitting Earth. Can I try to
say, I'm literally, I'm not even joking, this is
what I hear. I am edging
hard. Do it.
Prow! Like
she hits the world stage and it's like
a sting. It's like a frow! Oh my god! Like a ba-prow stage and it's like, it's like a sting. It's like a,
Oh my God.
Like a,
and it's Mary M culture,
not cause Mary M culture.
No hitting the world stage.
And now we all know who Mary M culture is.
If you don't know who Mary M culture slash Cosby is reader,
Matt,
tell him Mary M culture.
And you know what?
Yeah,
we are taking the Cosby out of it.
We're going to take the Cosby out of this.
Because it reminds us of bad things.
Yeah.
So we're taking it out.
I do love that her name is Mary M. Cosby,
but we're taking it out of it.
She's Mary M. Culture for this episode.
All right?
Stupid.
Mary M. Culture is the newest mover and shaker
of the Housewives franchise in real Housewives of Salt Lake.
Oh my God.
And she has been the topic of conversation.
Why?
Oh, it's because she's currently married to, you guessed it, her grandmother, who is since
past ex-husband.
Her step-grandfather.
She is married to her step-grandfather. The man that was basically
her grandfather figure is the one she is married to. Now you might think this is a little odd.
Well, it was in her grandmother's will that one of her granddaughters do this so that she could
eventually step into her shoes as the first lady of the Pentecostal church in Salt Lake city,
Utah.
Thank you.
Right.
She is,
I don't know if they are ordained.
I don't know the specifics in terms of,
um,
religious titles.
And maybe wouldn't want to know.
And leadership roles.
I maybe wouldn't want to know,
but I,
she is,
I guess an ordained Pentecostal minister. She, Oh, and she feels her fantasy. She feels to know, but I, she is, I guess an ordained Pentecostal minister.
She,
Oh,
and she feels her fantasy.
She feels her fantasy,
but she,
um,
is a professional orator in a sense.
Oh,
a speaker.
And yet the words that come out of her mouth are so shocking.
And that,
of course it makes sense.
So there's that.
Words like what?
You smell like hospital.
I had to get my odor glands removed it was 12 different surgeries
I almost died twice on the table
they had to bring me back
they had to bring me back
they had to bring me back
or words like
one of the worst
a wildfire that killed 5600 people
turned into some of the best grapes
I've ever tasted.
Out of context, they like they did you remember that from last night's show?
Yes, I distinctly remember them like all coming in all coming in.
We should say to her Met Gala themed luncheon to theme to theme your event after another
event that changes themes. It's iconic.
Iconic, cathartic even.
It's cathartic.
It was a cathartic moment in history
to understand that the women had no prompt
other than Met Gala,
a famously themed annual event.
It was held in a restaurant in an osteria in salt lake city with a thin thin red
carpet that baby had was four feet in length total velvet rope you had beefeater slash christmas toy
soldiers valeting the women out opening the woman's's door, the car doors, and then two or three fake paparazzi or fake photographers
snapping photos of these women walking inside this one-story restaurant
in Salt Lake City.
And then they walk into their settings, to their place settings,
where they are greeted by a journal that has the words boss lady on them and they're prompted to write
something about themselves that they want the group to know as well as airpods as well as airpods
this fall on bravo it's time to turn up think you've seen it all i don't think you've been a
good friend to me lately.
We're friends like that.
Who needs enemies?
You ain't seen nothing yet.
Cheers to being Germanic.
With the Real Housewives of Potomac.
Oh my gosh, can I take this in?
It's gonna be amazing.
New York City.
Everyone is a gossip.
No one gets a happier life.
Salt Lake City.
We don't wear costumes, we wear fashion.
And below deck sailing out.
You broke the rules and now you're here getting upset. Watch all new seasons on Bravo or stream it on City TV+.
Let's have a real good time.
I'm Julian Edelman.
I'm Rob Gronkowski.
Guess what, folks?
We're teammates again.
And we're going to welcome you guys all to Dudes on Dudes.
I'm a dude, you're a dude, and Dudes on Dudes is our brand new show.
We're going to highlight players, peers, guys that we played against,
legends from the past, and we're just going to sit here and talk about them.
And we'll get into the types of dudes.
What kind of types of dudes are there, Gronk?
We got studs, wizards.
We got freaks.
Or dudes dudes.
We got dogs.
Dogs.
We'll break down their games.
We'll share some insider stories and determine what kind of dude each of these dudes
are. Is Randy Moss a
stud or a freak? Is Tom
Brady a dog or a dude's dude?
We're gonna find out, Jules.
New episodes drop every Thursday
during the NFL season.
Listen to Dudes on Dudes on the iHeart
Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or
wherever you get your podcasts.
I felt too seen. Um, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I felt too seen.
Dragged.
I'm NK, and this is Basket Case.
So I basically had what back in the day they would call a nervous breakdown.
I was crying and I was inconsolable.
It was just very big, sudden swaps of different meds. What is wrong with me? Oh,
look at you giving me therapy, girl. Finally, a show for the mentally ill girlies. On Basketcase,
I talk to people about what happens when what we call mental health is shaped by the conditions
of the world we live in. Because if you haven't noticed, we are experiencing some kind of
conditions that are pretty hard to live with. But if you struggle to noticed, we are experiencing some kind of conditions that are pretty hard to live with.
But if you struggle to cope, the society that created the conditions in the first place will tell you there's something wrong with you.
And it will call you a basket case.
Listen to Basket Case every Tuesday on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, it's Mike and Ian. We're the hosts of
How to Do Everything from NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. Each week, we take your questions and
find someone much smarter than us to answer them. Questions like, how do you survive the Bermuda
Triangle? How do you find a date inside the Bermuda Triangle? We can't help you,
but we will find someone who can. Listen to the How to Do Everything podcast on iHeartRadio.
When we are understanding this to be a real person in the world,
it's important that we lift that person up to the front of the culture.
Now, in terms of housewives
and why we should care
Bethany Frankel
is a part of the culture
Nini Leakes is a part of the culture
to move on
Lisa Rinna is a part of the culture
Lisa Vanderpump is a part of the culture
this
individual has the power
has the power has the power culture has the power miriam culture has the power
to shake things up internationally she has a great responsibility now to speak for us
on an international on an international level because these women you know they do they they're
international they're all over the place.
Bethany Frankel, she's feared.
She's feared in all nations.
Across the world.
She is one of the most fearsome figures.
Do you remember when we saw her at the Emmys?
I literally don't.
She walked right past us at the Emmys and we were like, that's Bethany.
Honestly, maybe I was more having a sooty moment about it.
We were like, that's fully Bethany just out maybe I was more having a sooty moment about it. We were like, that's fully
Bethany just out in the wild.
You must have blacked it out. Maybe you
were so anxious.
You know, like it was a big night.
It was like a really big night.
Sometimes there's some jitters on Emmy night.
On the purple carpet at the Emmys.
It just gets really
feels so big. And you know, you've been
watching it every year since you were little.
And then all of a sudden you're there,
you know,
Miriam Cosby.
What,
what kind of leader do you want her to be?
If she ever reaches that international,
international level,
diplomatic,
diplomatic leader,
which I think she has shown.
I like her to be a diplomatic leader,
compromise,
centrist.
I couldn't be the most centrist. be the most centrist we need more centrism
we need more centrism
we obviously need more centrism
America has spoken, we need to be more centrist
and keep things the same
we need to do nothing
things need to not change
we need to be more centrist
this is the way things are going now
it's good we need to be more centrist this is the way things are going now it's good
we need more
centrism
stay the same
stop
I said
everybody
these episodes
are going to
everyone's going to catch up
this is going to be weird Matt
I'm sorry
everyone's going to catch up to the baseline
that I have been at this whole time
which is there is no one funnier
than Matt Rogers
no don't do that
Matt
this is art
you're being ho-ish
stop I'm just having a good time with my sister.
Okay.
My sister.
You know what I've been thinking a lot?
What?
How we have to make these 12 days of culture surprising coming from us.
I know.
We can't have any bullshit like it's Disney World.
No, but I mean is well-trod territory cannot be trod again.
But Miriam Cosby is an exception because she's a Barbara Streisand,
Starz moment, Bethany Frankel potential.
That's what I'm thinking.
But you, why are you putting that limit on yourself?
No, no, no.
Look, we've talked ad nauseum.
But if you want to talk about Disney being
a part of the days of cult.
There's bigger than Disney.
Really?
There's bigger.
I don't know.
There is so much bigger out there.
So you're saying there's not going to be a Kelly Clarkson day?
There's not going to be.
There's bigger.
My jaw is on the floor.
I don't, Kelly doesn't need, she, she.
Are you, are you going to commit to this?
There is no Kelly on this.
Oh my God.
Well, readers, okay.
We should just say we did not do this like 200 moments in culture history.
No, we're doing this second by second.
We are doing, we're building this out like on like ad hoc creating.
So you're saying that you don't want any Kelly Clarkson days.
I have spoken about Kelly Clarkson enough.
And she needs the holidays off from me.
She needs the holidays off from me.
And we've done an amazing job so far.
Over two episodes, we have done the cultural institution of McDonald's
and the cultural institution and cultural promise shown by Ms. Mary M. Cosby, who said famously, what's her opening line?
You smell like hospital.
I may love God, but I will read you like scripture.
But I will read you like a scripture.
Like a scripture.
I'm sorry.
Also notice that Mary M. Cosby feels no need to like say the housewives tagline
like a housewife or like
do any of her talking heads like in a housewife
way. She is authentic.
Not
she's not adding an extra layer on top
of who she really is.
You have to respect that.
Oh no. There is no layers.
There's no layers.
She is married to her step-grandfather.
She has a child with him.
And now when her son is acting up about who he wants to date,
she will have an opinion.
That explains it.
I never thought of it like that.
I'm a dumbass.
I'm just watching these shows like fully.
Oh no, these are deep texts.
No, they are.
They really are deep texts.
I've never doubted.
I mean, you know, our friend Natalie Walker says Housewives is Shakespeare.
You're seeing pathos play out in these truly shocking ways that make you rethink how suffering happens or joy happens.
Can you literally believe, though, that there's only been four Housewives of Salt Lake episodes and already
it's in a whole world. I'm like
I feel like I could slide into a booth at a restaurant
with these girls and be like everyone
I have an opinion and I'm ready to share it.
I don't like
Meredith. I don't like Lisa.
That's crazy. Meredith is the glue.
No. She's the glue.
Meredith is the glue and I'm disengaging.
I'm sorry but that is I'm the glue and i'm disengaging i'm sorry i'm not engaging i'm
disengaging i'm no longer engaging that's what i do i just engage i don't think you should talk
to a woman like that no oh no that's lisa no that's what lisa oh no lisa is lisa crying because
she has high goals at the end of the episode was i texted you about that right i was like but i feel
like i'm lisa so i did think it was hilarious that she started crying out of nowhere,
talking about her own goals.
I was like,
where is this going to go?
That was the only non Mary related thing that episode that I was like,
Oh my God,
what?
Also Meredith telling her something important about her life.
And Lisa being like,
is it going to make me cry?
Don't make me cry.
I'm crying.
I'm crying a lot. Okay lot okay okay i'm not okay i'm not gonna cry yeah i didn't think of that wow lisa is it's to me it's funny like literally that entire scene the the thesis of that scene was lisa tries
not to cry while meredith tells her about her separation from her husband, the father of her children.
Okay.
The through line was, Lisa did not want to cry.
Okay, well, I guess this is the thing.
I like watching Lisa and Meredith,
but they are not likable to me.
I get it.
Heather's growing on me so much in the lot.
Her saying, yeah, I'm dressed like a flapper and I have cankles
like calling the Uber driver.
Oh, a flapper with cankles.
I'm like, okay,
she's so funny.
And then...
I mean, I'll go over there
if we make eye contact,
but if not,
I'm going to wait
for my chicken lollipop sticks.
Iconic.
And then Whitney,
I think is really fun too.
Whitney's great.
I like Whitney a lot.
Whitney's good at talking heads.
Whitney's great at talking heads. Whitney's great at talking heads.
She's really good.
She actually is the one that has impressed me the most.
Yes.
I love that it's like a thing that,
she's got a stripper pole in her house,
so she must use it a lot
because the women all talk about it.
Also, just like, she's not like,
she's not against, I don't know.
When I saw her, I was like,
oh, she's going to be too sweet for me.
But she talks a lot of shit.
And I really like it. But she says smart things. Yeah, she I saw her, I was like, Oh, she's going to be too sweet for me, but she talks a lot of shit. And I really like it.
But she says smart things.
Yeah.
She's always right.
I feel like she hasn't said anything thus far where I've been like,
Oh,
that person has an issue.
That's deeper than anything I can get from just them talking right now.
Like for example,
Jen obviously has like anger issues.
Yes.
Yeah.
Like there's obviously a deep well of sadness there or maybe loneliness
like she was saying but i think crucially is like there needs to be an assessment of like what's
obviously an anger problem of course um but before we move on from whitney i feel like whitney's
sort of storylines that have nothing to do with the housewives are mostly about her dad and i'm
like oh but like this is a really kind of like a like
a lovely journey to follow and there's a lot of like pathos there too but it's like on its way
it's on the right side of things yeah she is um i like yeah she's like she's like a good audience
surrogate like you feel like you can place yourself in her situation and understand emotionally
she's a lot like honestly um you don't watch Dallas, but
Stephanie. I can see, like, there's
this one Stephanie where she just, like,
really opened up about the stuff
that she's gone through. Like, she made a
suicide attempt when she was very young,
and she was open about it, and you,
she, I talk about this with Joel all the
time, because she's in both of our All Stars
cast, if we put together Housewives.
You might like
dallas by the way no i have no reason to not watch it yeah yeah but i get i literally get not
watching it it's like doubt on face value i didn't watch her for so long it's like dallas like am i
gonna hate watching these like rich white women who have like southern values conservative values
like toe the line between like what's low class and high society
am i gonna like that i did um that's how i felt going into salt lake city is like am i gonna want
to watch these wealthy women in they're the most liberal cast they are they really are it's it's
interesting yeah it's it is it is interesting like heather gay said something that was really
great about um trans rights Did you see this?
Oh, no, I didn't.
Somebody commented on her Instagram and was like,
how does it feel to be the first trans housewife?
Oh, Jesus.
It was horrible.
It was like just trying to demean her.
And she said, I am so happy to be an advocate for the trans community
if it's helpful.
I think that everyone deserves equal rights and that everyone,
she just went on and she just like went on
and she was like,
you're saying this as an insult,
but like if I can be someone who's visible
that says that trans lives matter,
that black trans lives matter,
like she basically kind of just took that opportunity
to be like, I'm an ally
just so everyone that follows me knows.
I love that because it's not even her
like trying to like snipe back, but she was just like,
oh no, I refuse
the terms of this insult
that you are putting forward.
And I'm only
going to go the other way. That's great.
Oh my God. Good for her.
Yeah. It was cool
to read. This is before the show
started, but I don't want to
talk positively about anyone really in the moment of
Mary M culture.
Oh no,
this is Mary M cultures moment.
Yeah.
Cause none of them matter ultimately,
but hit it,
hitting the world stage.
Like,
what I want to ask you,
what do you see?
Any sensory,
any sensory thing that is associated.
The Greek theater.
It's 9.30.
The show started at 7.
The sky is black.
But thousands of stars.
On stage, cutting through,
cutting through even the Los Angeles smog.
The stars in a way calling out, saying,
we're here and we're ready to be joined
by a new star.
Understand that we are your family.
The stars screaming out for something.
On stages, just that familiar landscape, you know?
That familiar musical landscape.
The drums, the guitars, the keyboards, all empty.
No one is there.
In the audience, however, thousands of people screaming, screaming,
star, star.
They're screaming for the star.
Star, come out, star.
They're screaming out.
Backstage, just offstage, the star is shaking.
She is so trembleful.
And she is such a star.
Everyone knows it.
Everyone that sees her knows it.
She has star quality.
She's a star.
She shines.
But still,
she's shaking so much
and a man approaches her.
And I mean,
Oh my God.
I don't mean just any type of man.
I mean a real man.
Okay?
One who can handle some bricks
and some wood
and some trees.
Okay?
He has that rugged look of a man,
not a boy,
a simple boy,
not a simple boy.
And he says to the star,
I will be with you out there too.
He says,
just those simple words.
I will be with you out there too.
He says,
Hey,
Hey,
I will be with you out there too. He says, hey, hey, I will be with
you out there too.
And she
sort of looks up at him and she says,
I know this
is about to change it all.
Everything.
And he just shakes
his head. He just shakes his head.
He's like, yeah.
And in that moment, they not only just fall in love, but they start walking. shakes his head. He just like said, you know, he's like, yeah. Yeah.
And in that moment,
they not only just fall in love,
but they start walking.
And then,
this is so emotional,
even for me.
I was there that night.
I was there that night.
You were?
I was there.
And,
she gets tired. Once the crowd sees her, it's just, that was there. And she,
the star, once the crowd sees her, it's just, it's so
clear. It's so clear
she's Star.
And Star gets to the mic
and she
looks out to the crowd and everyone's
just like,
ah.
It's just a thick wall.
And she holds up one finger.
She says one thing.
She holds one finger up.
This one, the pointer finger, just the pointer.
And everyone within seconds.
And it is silent. And suddenly, the star drops her hand.
And the beat comes in.
And she says,
Why did you do that?
Do that, do that, do that, do that to me.
Why did you do that?
To me.
That. to do that to me! That
causes her
to shoot into the sky.
Solidify in a gaseous form.
She becomes
her own sun.
Planets circle around her.
And the stars all around her turn to her.
Because they too were once performers.
And they say, girl, you did that.
End of story
you know why i love that because it referenced a lot of lady gaga imagery no no was because
is maryam culture is the why did you do that? If people, that's a little culture,
Mary M culture is the,
why did you do that?
Of humans.
Which rule of culture is that?
14.
There's many of them.
There's so many.
And this joins that iconic group.
You are giving me, can I tell you something?
Yes.
Everything you're saying has the same amount of gravitas that I associate with someone like-
Hillary Clinton.
Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey.
You are laying down these... This company
is immense. I think
you've earned your place next
to them, my friend.
I take
my platform very seriously
and you do too.
I want you to know that you're...
You do something different. No, no, no.
I'm not done with you yet.
You do something with your platform
which is that when you speak you speak the truth you're a seer and people listen people listen
yeah don't forget i learned everything that i learned from books film television media
so but that's the power of culture.
Don't deflect.
The culture teaches me and I'm just a vessel.
I'm a vessel.
You're giving the culture back.
Radiating out from you is the culture.
You know what?
Ultimately, it is an honor to hear that coming from you, my sister.
Thank you. Who has the taste that jumps out nearly seven times a day.
The taste jumps out.
Thank you, Queen.
Which is way more than the taste jumps out of, let's just say this, anyone who listens to this.
No, no, no.
I don't want to. No, no, no, no, no.
They understand.
The taste jumps out of Bo and Yang more than most human beings.
And we as readers and me as a cult priest, I have to be humble about this.
We are in the presence of Bowen Taste Yang.
B-T-Y.
I take very seriously.
Yes, you should.
The act of consumption.
We all consume. It's consumption. We all consume.
It's okay.
We all consume.
You know what?
I've been consuming from day one.
Honey, you don't have to explain it to me.
I've been there.
I know.
I've been there.
I know.
But I take seriously what I consume.
And after a certain amount of time, I don't know if anyone else does this,
but I,
when I,
when I like something,
I go for it.
Yes.
And that's what I hope.
I hope some people out there are doing this too.
I can't be the only one.
Are you doing this?
Think about that.
Ask yourself that question right now.
Are you doing this?
I want every culturista and reader,
whatever you got,
you're stupid idiots. Stop. I want to culturista and reader whatever you got you're stupid idiots
stop i want to say i don't like you i lovingly call them the stupid idiots yes
i want you to say out loud right now are you doing this are you doing this to say that to yourself
are you doing this and answer not you might not like the answer but you have to answer
and you know what i hope you say yes.
And I just want to say that before we sing our little song,
thank you so much to Mary M. Cosby for hitting the world stage.
Thank you, life.
Thank you, love.
And it is true.
There is some angels in this city.
And Mary Miam Cosby,
I want to thank you
for giving me
the best day
of
culture.
Bye.
Bye.

What is wrong with me?
A show about the ways that mental illness is shaped by not just biology.
Swaps of different meds, but by culture and society.
By looking closely at the conditions that cause mental distress, I find out why so many of us are struggling to feel sane, what we can do about it, and why we should care.
