On Thanksgiving Day, 1999, five-year-old Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez was found off the coast of Florida. And the question was, should the boy go back to his father in Cuba? Mr. Gonzalez wanted to go home
Starting point is 00:01:20 and he wanted to take his son with him. Or stay with his relatives in Miami. Imagine that your mother died trying to get you to freedom. Listen to Chess Peace, the Elian Gonzalez story on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Jay Shetty and I'm the host of On Purpose. My latest episode is with Jelly Roll. This episode is one of the most honest and raw interviews I've ever had. We go deep into Jelly Roll's life story from being in and out of prison from the age of 13 to being one of today's biggest artists. I was a desperate delusional dreamer. Be a delusional dreamer.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Just don't be a desperate delusional dreamer. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast trust me you won't want to miss this one look man oh I see him wow look over there wow is that culture yes Las Culturistas. Ding dong! Las Culturistas calling! And listen to this sound. Ah! Oh my god! That's a little bottle of VUV for your nerves. VUV to move the spirits of a nation.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Yes! As we absolutely get together today, Bo, for what is the 300th episode of Las Culturistas. Can you fucking even? So, Raise Your Glass If You Are Wrong Hitting all the right ways More on that one later. I mean, we started with that song
Starting point is 00:02:53 pretty recently in an episode. Yes. Raise Your Glass by Pink. Well, not to sort of get ahead of ourselves because It was the Jared episode, I think. I believe it was. And not to sort of get ahead of ourselves, but the reason why it was so easy to sort of, quote-unquote, as you said, start with Raise Your Glass on that episode is because it's at the forefront of the culture. Absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:12 And that is what this series of episodes is about. Say that. Say that. And keep saying that. Well, if you don't know, we've been sort of building up to it for a while now, for a couple months at least. Oh, yeah. We are presenting you, the readers, the publicists, with the 300 songs of the Great Global Songbook. What does that mean?
Starting point is 00:03:36 What does it mean to be on this book, be in the Great Global Songbook? global songbook it means that when you were released whether that was by streaming or even on a record years ago yeah you had international impact instantly this is the great global songbook this is not the national song no las codrillas has no national pride it's actually a rule of culture number 16 las codrillas has no national pride nationalism will destroy us all and it's destroying us currently and it's yeah now but speaking sort of about the world um one of the most important things in the world is music i think you can agree cheers to that cheers to that and absolutely let's just say that the whole community the whole lost college expanded community is here we have you know hans we have
Starting point is 00:04:21 anna we have doug and you know tonight and you know, tonight it's just family. Tonight it's just family. We've been hearing the calls. Oh yeah. Everyone's saying, we want Lost Culture to do Culture Catch-Up. Yes. We hear you. We'll do you one even better. We'll do you 300 even better. We'll do you 300 even better. Culture Catch-Up,
Starting point is 00:04:40 how about for all time? For all time. How about for music of all time? How about you wanted Lost Culture to sort of get together in the room, look each other dead in the eyes and talk culture? You're going to get fucked in your ass. You're going to get fucked in your ass. Let me just say, it's vibes and the vibe is different. We say this every time we meet back up again in person. It's just not the same over Zoom.
Starting point is 00:05:01 It's just not the same over Zoom. And one of the great things about this is that not only can Bowen and I be together, but like we said, we have the Lost Coach expanded family here. And they're all going to be making cameos today. Absolutely. Which they don't even know. But they're all going to come in and they're all going to tell us at some point, not right now, because I saw you get up, Doug, and I didn't say now.
Starting point is 00:05:18 No, he went to go grab a coffee. He made a pot. Well, don't come in yet. Because I didn't say. You didn't say either, right? I did not make a peep so he was not invited he's not invited in so later when he's invited and he can come in and he can sort of say what lost culture he thinks has done for him his career uh you know and really
Starting point is 00:05:35 the international community at large absolutely i think we should waste no time i well and before we sort of get into it there is a twist there's a twist there's a lot there's a classic las coderistas twist um with this 300th episode not only are we presenting the great global songbook the songbook is a list and the list is a countdown it's a countdown there is a number one song of list is a countdown. It's a countdown. There is a number one song of all time in the world. And there is a number 300 song in the world.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And we have meticulously gone through this list. And it's an honor to be on the list. It's an honor to be on the list. There is no such thing as being on the list and being a failure of a piece of culture. Right. Of a song. Exactly. You are in the great global songbook this is something celebrate it celebrate it this is people will be singing this for generations to come the children will be
Starting point is 00:06:34 singing the songs at graduation at weddings at funerals children will be singing the songs at weddings at funerals you know here's the thing too um when when you when you get when you if you are an artist on the list and you want to reach out to us please do it through channels please do it through proper channels yeah do it through proper channels because the dms you know it's so overwhelming it's so overwhelming for us my God. You got to go through your requests. So let's just say, like I'm going through the list right now. Donna Sommer,
Starting point is 00:07:09 if you're out there, you have some songs on the list. Go through channels. Go through channels. Please. Whatever that means. Yeah, whatever that means to you.
Starting point is 00:07:15 And I think we should start, you know, right before we hit play, Bowen. Yeah. Hot Engineer Doug. What? He said something to us. he said yeah i'm just
Starting point is 00:07:28 reading the quote me too he came into this room earlier and said the flow can dictate the feel the flow can dictate the feel that's one of the hottest things he's ever said it really was sort of jarring and i think in the moment I sort of responded in a negging way. Because I think I was scared at how aroused I was. When you have fear over the arousal, when it feels forbidden. When it feels forbidden, that can be some of the hottest moments in your life. That's actually real culture number 50. When it feels forbidden, that can actually be some of the hottest moments of your life.
Starting point is 00:08:07 You know? What does that mean to you, the flow can dictate the feel? I think what he was trying to say was that we don't have to feel like we're spending too much time or not enough time on any song. The flow can dictate the feel. You know, we are gonna be sitting here for six hours. That's another thing. We're gonna
Starting point is 00:08:22 be here all day, and maybe we're even gonna have some surprise guests. Maybe some surprise guests surprise guests maybe some surprise guests maybe not too many maybe not too few maybe none maybe none we'll see we really created a playground a sandbox for different people to come through and play and build castles yes so because that's what happens in a sandbox really you get into it and you build a castle and so i think that all we're really trying to do with this is build a castle that is the 300 well i think and i'm being completely honest i looked through this list this morning yeah we've built a monument this will stand the test of cultural time. This is a canon list. This is canon. This is like the top 200 moments of culture. This is canon.
Starting point is 00:09:09 I feel like this list by itself is its own moment in culture history. We may have to make a new list. We may have to make a new list. Well, what do you say? I say. Let's begin because guess what? To quote a famous person. My ass has been on pause.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Yeah. But I'm about to press play. And let's press play. What do you say? Play. Podcast being a visual medium, I just totally mimed hitting play. A button.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Wait, everyone listen. Okay. And with that, we have number 300 someone to watch over me ella fitzgerald one of the most incredible communicators of story and music of all time absolutely longing um the first time you know one of the only times the word monogram is used in a song. One of Gershwin's finest, best songs. I mean, effortlessly performed by Ella, whose vibrato is singular. You know, she just, and just the last notes of the song, you never forget.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Oh, me. That was sort of my Ella. That was beautiful. Yeah. So she, of my Ella. That was beautiful. Congratulations, Ella. You just eked the 300th spot. You made the list. Number 299.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Blurred Lines. Glee Cast version. Glee Cast. I mean, this was... This elevated the material. This elevated the material because the source material is a little dubious. Let's just say it's a little thick.
Starting point is 00:10:48 It's a little thick. Okay. So to speak. So to speak and so to be spoken. So to be spoken. But to have the artists of their generation, the Glee cast, be able to make it palatable, presentable, appropriate for a Fox network prime time for kids. Kids now
Starting point is 00:11:10 were singing about the blurred lines. You know what I mean? Kids were singing it. And it's not kids bop. No, no, no, no. It's Glee cast. It's adults doing teens for kids. That's not kids bop. No. It's very kids, Bob. No.
Starting point is 00:11:25 It's very different. You're passing down something through intergenerational access. Absolutely. And I think that Blurred Lines is important. If you just read the lyrics. Sometimes on some of these songs, if you really want to just internalize a song, just read the lyrics. And then be like, understand, the kids, of course, should hear this. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Palatable. Number 298. Venus, Lady Gaga. I mean, transport me, why don't you? Why don't you? To another galaxy. Or our own solar system. Well, up for debate.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Up for debate. You might say Venus is not in this galaxy. We don't share a galaxy with Venus. Well, honey, I'll tell you what song is in my heart. Venus. Venus. You remember years ago, me, you, and Dave Rizzoni. We went to karaoke in Williamsburg. Yes, we did, but do you remember the time we performed Venus at the People's Improv Theater?
Starting point is 00:12:16 Yes. Oh my, we had different memories. See, the fact that we have different indelible memories of Venus, because we, I remember the time you and I did it at karaoke in Williamsburg with Michael Hartney
Starting point is 00:12:27 sitting in the corner. Yes. Hearing this song for the first time going, what the hell is this? And were we not the purveyors of joy in that moment? Girl, we were like,
Starting point is 00:12:38 you know, importing, you know, when you meet a white lady in Los Angeles who sells artisanal vinegar or whatever, our vinegar was Venus.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Yes. We were the people who were like, let me show you this beautiful product. Before we move on, favorite planet? Neptune. I'm going to say Jupiter. But I also have a solid spot for Mercury. Mars. And several stars! Okay. But I also have a solid spot for Mercury, Mars, and Sir for the stars.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Okay. Number 297. I will always love you, Whitney Houston. Would you say this is a low placement for this song that is considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time? I think people will be surprised by its placement, but I do not think it is a low placement. Because it is where it is in the list, and that means that's where it's falling in the canon so where's the surprise coming from then mama i guess people would people i think have really built this song up and let's just say it should be built up it's on the list and when dolly parton god created god created and i think god was really speaking through dolly when he wrote this song. Dolly was channeling the muse, a.k.a. God.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Yeah. God is the muse. That's actually real culture number 99. God is the muse. First of all. And I think we can all agree that when Whitney Houston sang the song, it got more famous. I would say so but i there are 296 songs that are better than this song according to this songbook canonically we should also say this was not up to us this was not up to us no
Starting point is 00:14:15 we did not decide where things landed um i'm sorry can i ask i think you might have more visibility into this process was Was it the committee? Was Megan involved? I think that there was a blue ribbon panel of Megan McCain and Abby Huntsman. A two-person panel. A two-person blue ribbon panel. An even number of people. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:38 In case they would just assume that there would be no ties. Right. That there would be in unanimous agreement and unanimous being two people, mutual agreement exactly, because usually what happens is Megan sort of says we're doing this and Abby sort of says maybe not and then Megan says and then they do that thing
Starting point is 00:14:54 so that's sort of the way the list was decided and we merely received the list and with all that in mind, just know that I Will Always Love You does land at 297 that was an amazing essence of megan mccain like you don't have to say you know you know what would you say my essence like in um in a sound is no no you can't use any words i can do you first do me
Starting point is 00:15:19 because i was gonna go for you i was gonna go hmm yeah and i feel that that's so i have the more it's more a little bit more like rougher and yours is more analytical it's more hmm but sometimes people love the rougher and with and and with that's in that spirit yes let's get number 296. I'm gonna get you good green version Shania Twain. This is the country version
Starting point is 00:15:50 of I'm gonna get you good. The green version. What makes it green? Is there a synesthesia there? I'm pleased that you asked. So she has two versions of the song and I guess we'll see
Starting point is 00:16:02 if the other version made it onto the list. But this is green version. So green version being country version. She released two versions of the song and i guess we'll see if the other version made it on yeah yeah this is green version so green version being country version she released two versions of her album up one was more country and one was more pop i guess she was sort of one of the original crossover women absolutely green is country because of the the hills green grasses green grasses i see yeah so you can imagine the nature of, country music is very much made in nature. Outside. I didn't know that. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Yes. They record outside? Well, yes. So with country music, it's more about, you know, hay, barley, horses, fields, all things that happen outside. So you have to sort of be outside in order to sing correctly country you know what i mean i totally understand for example the song um this kiss this kiss was performed outside uh-huh and when you sing it inside try it's though it doesn't sound right it's the way you let me know
Starting point is 00:17:01 i wasn't enunciating i don't know what i don't know what's going on. Well, it's because you were inside. That's really what it was. That's really what it was. Let's move on. 295. I'm gonna get you good. Red version.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Shania Twain. More pop. More pop. And red is pop. Could happen inside. You want to give this one a shot? I don't know. I'm not familiar with the song.
Starting point is 00:17:28 I don't. I'm not. You don't know i'm not familiar with the song i don't i'm not you don't know i'm gonna get you good i'm gonna get you it's a matter of fact oh yeah yeah yeah yeah well see there you go that's perfect we're inside and that's red version to me it was really resonant there it was resonant red you can bet your bottom dollar and dime you're gonna be mine. Just like I should, I'll get you good. Oh my god. Red version. Pokemon found dead. Pokemon
Starting point is 00:17:55 kilt. Kilt. Red version, green version, more like Shania Shania. Red version and green version, more like fuck off. The number 294 on the list. Cinema Italiano, Kate Hudson. The only time I've ever felt represented on screen is Kate Hudson in the film Nine. Person with long legs singing about an Italian movie.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Yes. So the thing about Kate Hudson in Nine is she really wants to live in an italian movie you know what i mean and she's she wants to go down the vietnam and you know like and you know she's just so horned up yeah for italian cinema have you not been to italy i have not been to italy so i guess you could say i'm just as horny as she is for italy i think you need to go to... I have only been to Rome. I have not been to the nice parts of Italy.
Starting point is 00:18:49 Not that Rome isn't a nice part, but Rome feels very touristy and not quite as... You don't get that Chinima Italiano feel. No. No, no, no. If you want to do Chinima Italiano, you gotta go to Venice. You gotta go to Venice. You know what I mean? You gotta go to Como. Exactly. You gotta go to Cinque Terre.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Yeah, and you know, the thing about Rome is I'm sure the bathroom facilities aren't updated. It's giving Colosseum. It's giving the Forum. It's giving the Forum. And I'll tell you something about Rome. There's death everywhere.
Starting point is 00:19:22 You look around the Colosseum, people were dying. People were dying everywhere. And look around the Coliseum, people were dead. People were dying everywhere. And if that's what you want to think about on your vacation, you have to go to therapy. You have to go to therapy for that one. I have a good therapist for you. Debra. Debra. Let's move on.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Alright, so this is number 293. Thunder by Jessie J. One of the craziest vocals on any song ever recorded It sounds like that It sounds just like that
Starting point is 00:19:53 Talk about the reasons why this was released in the UK years before it was ever released in the US It's really shocking to know this wasn't a hit song because it is so incredible and amazing. And something about Jessie J is, like Nicole Scherzinger, she's really only very famous in England,
Starting point is 00:20:14 which is really more acceptable for Jessie because she is English. Nicole is sort of extremely American, but somehow can only really register in the UK. That might be changing, though, here for Nicole. I mean, I recently saw uh nicole do an intimate performance and she was singing like she was kate hudson what does that mean very well very well yeah extremely well yes i love the black and white i love the play of light. The way Contini puts his image through a prism. We're on a different song.
Starting point is 00:20:47 I know, but that's the power of some songs on the list. It's Ginema. But what a shame for Jessie J that she sort of got overshadowed by Kate. Well, no, no, no. Well, technically, in the placement, Jessie is overshadowing Kate. But we must, I think we might have to revisit this throughout this list yeah chini may italiana was a better song than i will always love you by whitney houston yeah absolutely sorry and that wasn't up to us that was up that wasn't up to sort of the blue ribbon panel and
Starting point is 00:21:14 also let's just say it god created let's move on 292 state of grace scooters version taylor swift you take this one hun you know there are those subtle differences that you notice any time an artist re-records one of their classic songs. And Taylor Swift is, of course, doing this in her project to re-record her albums to own her masters. Every now and then, you listen to a song and go, I liked the original better. I liked it when they didn't think
Starting point is 00:21:45 of, they didn't have to think about, well, we might have to re-record this in the future. Correct. And there are multiple songs on Red, Taylor's version, that I think were maybe glossed over. And State of Grace as the opening track of that
Starting point is 00:22:01 epic album. Genre-expansive, genre-b epic album. Genre expansive, genre bending album, crossover, smash hit. It's interesting to listen to Taylor's version of State of Grace and go, I think I like Scooter's version. You listen to the song and you say,
Starting point is 00:22:21 now where's the girl I knew? Now where's the girl I knew? Because I'm not hearing her. Because I'm not hearing her. Because I'm not hearing her. Let me find her. I'm not feeling enough of the color red. And red is pop, as we've learned from Shania Twain. Red means pop.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Red means pop. And there was something about, in a post-folklore Evermore world, I hope that Taylor revisits the pop. The truth you spoke just now, I hope she hears it. You know, I would say this to her face. I really would. I would watch. You would watch.
Starting point is 00:22:58 You like to watch. Let's move on. Number 290. Tie. This is a tie. This is a tie for 290. The tie is Sugar, we're going down fallout boy and dance dance fallout boy sort of like you know two two energies that were so undeniable that we could not as a as Cultures community, decide which one would go above and below the other one. So this is the only tie on the Great Global Songbook. The Great Global Songbook, which...
Starting point is 00:23:35 Say that 10 times fast. Say that 10 times fast. I mean, you're, you know, it's a little bit of a spoiler. There are no other ties in the rest of the list. I'm comfortable spoiling it. I'm comfortable spoiling that, too. As a community, and again, it wasn't up to us,
Starting point is 00:23:46 but it's up to the community, we could not decide which one was above or below the other. Correct. We do know that both are above I Will Always Love You. Both are above I Will Always Love You, which is great.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Great. And everyone did an amazing job on it. Including Whitney. Well, it's her version that's on the list. I mean, I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton that's on the list i mean i will always love you by dolly parton's is not it's not on the list and so therefore sort of doesn't really matter yeah so so in the end whitney still won out in a way now sugar we're going down what's the feeling that you get when the song comes on oh my god just as soon as pete comes in, am I more than you bargained for yet?
Starting point is 00:24:26 I'm buckling in, up, down, around. You know what I love? When he says the word we're, he goes, sugar who? Sugar who? Going down swinging? I never noticed that before. There are layers. There are still layers even years later to peel back.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Now, just to sort of, you know, jump over to a more sort of, you know, dance moment, dance, dance. How do you feel when you hear this? I go, I know, I guess I gotta follow the, anytime someone in a song tells you to dance, I command you to dance. You must follow the order. Oh, absolutely. And a military floor filler. The dance dance is a floor filler. And, you know, it absolutely popped off the music video when they're like, dance, dance,
Starting point is 00:25:14 et cetera, et cetera. It's one of the greatest songs. And it's tied for 290 on the Great Global Songbook. 289. School and Life, Beyonce. A song that you've described as saving your life. I will still say that.
Starting point is 00:25:28 I still believe that's true. What about it? Snapped me out of my depression. It's a song about... Let the readers get to know you in this moment. Well, the song is about
Starting point is 00:25:37 how at any age you are in school. And isn't that something amazing? That's something amazing for people who miss school for people who hate school yeah for people who never who still have stressed dreams about school yeah even though they've been away from it for decades like me decades i think this song is a wonderful encapsulation of life that you know you don't need who needs a degree who needs a degree and especially in a post in a post sort of um covid landscape when student debt student loan debt is still sort of
Starting point is 00:26:16 being foisted upon multiple generations of students this really liberates you from that thinking. Beyonce said gap year. Gap year. With this one. She said gap life. Gap life. She said, don't even go to third grade. Girl. She said, skip it all.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Who needs that degree when you're school alive? You know who didn't go to school? Didn't go point blank period? Jesus Christ. No. You think Jesus went to school? No. No.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Jesus was helping out on the farm. Jesus Christ was getting his hands dirty like a man should. All right? Let's say that right now. Jesus Christ was getting his hands dirty like a man should. It's rule of culture number five. Jesus Christ was getting his hands dirty like a man should. Getting schooled in the school of life.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And they remembered her. And they remembered her. And they remembered her. They never forgot her. Beyonce remembered Jesus? I think for sure. Say that. And more about Destiny's Child and members of Jesus later. Members of Jesus? The Real Housewives of New York City are back for another bite of the Big Apple.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Look who it is. Joined by elite new friends. Rebecca Minkoff. Have you ever heard of her? But things could change in a New York Minute. She had this wild night and ended up getting pregnant by some other guy. What? You told her? Not today, Satan. Not today. Starting point is 00:28:19 to be at the top of our game. On Thanksgiving Day, 1999, a five-year-old boy floated alone in the ocean. He had lost his mother, trying to reach Florida from Cuba. He looked like a little angel. I mean, he looked so fresh. And his name, Elian Gonzalez,
Starting point is 00:29:18 will make headlines everywhere. Elian Gonzalez. Elian. Elian. Elian. Elian. Elian. Elian Gonzalez. At the heart of the story is a young boy and the question of who he belongs with. His father in Cuba. Mr. Gonzalez wanted to go home and he wanted to take his son with him. Or his relatives in Miami. Imagine that your mother died trying to get you to freedom. At the heart of it all is still
Starting point is 00:29:39 this painful family separation. Something that as a Cuban I know all too well. Listen to Chess Peace, the Elian Gonzalez story, as part of the My Cultura podcast network, available on the iHeart Radio app,

Starting point is 00:33:39 You do? I think this is your spirit. Especially when I think about you. Ever since, I mean mean talking about Kate Hudson it's a constant thing even I forget about you having known you for so long you have that spirit in you
Starting point is 00:33:53 of Kate well when I meet Kate Hudson one day I'm just gonna go up to her tap her on the shoulder and say you're like me and she'll get it
Starting point is 00:34:02 she's gonna be like yeah for sure and then she's gonna be like yeah for sure and then she's gonna be like wait do you wanna go smoke a blunt out back oh my god

Father figures are just as important as fathers.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Let's move on. Number 285. Pretty girl rock, Carrie Hilson. Carrie Hilson has a huge career. Has a huge career. And you never... For her to identify, to ID herself so quickly in a song, my name is Carrie.
Starting point is 00:35:06 I'm so very fly. Oh my, it's a little bit scary. I know everything I need to know about this girl. Yeah, it's like she's begun the song, and we know who she is. And that allows us to really invest in her, which we did, and now she's got a huge career. Talk about the impact.
Starting point is 00:35:28 The line, don't hate me because I'm beautiful, had on the culture. Oh, my God. Major. Major impact. I wouldn't stop hearing it for years. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. It's sort of a chicken of the egg. Chicken of the egg.
Starting point is 00:35:42 It's sort of a chicken of the egg chicken of the egg it's sort of a chicken of the egg did carrie say it or did or did did your um you know your floor mate in your dorm at uh you know pace university say it and and it's that's the sort of chicken of the egg the chicken of the egg all right let's move on number 284 get ready for this one a thousand miles vanessa carlton A Thousand Miles, Vanessa Carlton You know immediately what song it is You already know And immediately like It's crazy It's not a lot, would you agree
Starting point is 00:36:15 And I'm being serious, not a lot of songs Are recognizable by The first lyrics Sometimes you gotta Hook someone in with the chorus Sometimes like the way that you can index A hook someone in with the chorus. Sometimes like the way that you can index a song is by singing the chorus
Starting point is 00:36:29 or the bridge. The first lyrics, you could say Pretty Girl Rock is the same. Absolutely. But Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful is maybe more
Starting point is 00:36:36 important than My Name is Carrie. For A Thousand Miles, the most important lyric of that song is Making my way downtown Walking fast Faces fast And I'm homebound And also, A Thousand Miles, the most important lyric of that song is, Making my way downtown, walking fast, faces fast and I'm homebound.
Starting point is 00:36:48 And also, not even just the first words, the first musical notes. Yes. I don't know better notes. I don't know a better note. Better notes. Put together. Put together. In terms of song. 283. Tiny Moves, Miss Beginnings
Starting point is 00:37:04 Chang. Played by Maya Rudolph on Deep House Dish on Saturday Night Live. This was one of the greatest moments in sketch comedy history for me. Deep House Dish. Absolutely the same. James Anderson, We Do Not Deserve You. These are my tiny moves. These are the moves I do.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Want to start to move with you. I start with my tiny moves. Tilt and freak tilt tilt and freak tilt and freak tilt tilt and freak don't start a dangerous situation tilt and freak tilt tilt and control your parameters control your parameters i was waiting i thought it was explore your parameters but it was control your parameters. I was waiting. I thought it was explore your parameters, but it was control your parameters. It's just, you can't, there's, it doesn't get better than that.
Starting point is 00:37:51 No. On a comedy level, on a songwriting level, like, on a, on a choreo level, like, these are my tiny moves,
Starting point is 00:37:59 these are the moves I do. Honestly, I'll never forget watching it. It was the Matthew Fox episode of SNL years ago. Oh my god, and that was like you, like that's your culture. My culture was literally all coming up in one. And also, never forget, it did not make the list, but that was when
Starting point is 00:38:13 Amy Poehler played Miss Latissa Stroh and she ka-ka-ka-ka- cologne. I want it. Ka-ka-ka-ka- cologne for Christmas. Two ounces is not enough. C-C-C-Cologne. I want it. C-C-C-C-C-Cologne. For Christmas. Two ounces is not enough.
Starting point is 00:38:28 Three ounces is not enough. Four ounces is not enough. Five depends on the brand. I want to spray myself in spray cologne this Christmas. And there's more to the song. Wow. Put respect on James Anderson's name. Now. Now. Prior guest of the... Listen to the song, but wow. Put respect on James Anderson's name. Now.
Starting point is 00:38:45 Now. Prior guest of the... Listen to this episode of Lost Culture. Go back and listen, or else. Or else. Next up. Number 282. I'm here, Cynthia Erivo.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Talk about the importance of The Color Purple. No, we can't. The Color Purple was an incredibly important and influential film you know steven spielberg directed this film in the mid-80s and not only was it a launching pad you know not only for the careers of whoopi goldberg and oprah winfrey um but really what this did was it told a story that needed to be told it's an al Alice Walker novel. And, you know, like, we've also seen it, you know, brought to Broadway by Oprah Winfrey. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:39:29 And it's a great Tony-winning success by LaChanze and Cynthia Erivo herself. And, you know, now Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba. Is Elphaba. So that's sort of, if you can sort of see the trajectory there, it's like you go, and this is what everyone dreams of.
Starting point is 00:39:41 You dream of Celie. Celie and then Elphaba. And then Elphaba. The Celie to Elphaba pipeline is the dream. It is the dream. For any actor.
Starting point is 00:39:49 You know that Cynthia Erivo has played Celie, Aretha Franklin and Elphaba. The three dolls. And then I'm
Starting point is 00:39:57 I feel like we're missing one. I feel like there's a fourth doll. It's Celie, Elphaba, Aretha. And who else did Cynthia play?
Starting point is 00:40:09 Who's the doll? Oh, my God. Let me just see really quickly. There's one doll that we're missing. I just know it. Okay. I just know it. Well, Harriet. Oh, of course.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Harriet. Iconic. Harriet Tubman is the fourth doll. Okay. Let's move on. Moving on. And this is true. This song is better than the previous song on a roll number 281 on a roll ashley oh isn't it iconic that miley cyrus said you know what i am gonna be another fictional so many characters live inside
Starting point is 00:40:41 miley she's like um chameleon She's a chameleon. She's like David Bowie. So many characters. She's like David Bowie. You know what Miley Cyrus said? She said, fuck you David Bowie. She said, fuck you Daniel Day-Lewis. Fuck you Jared
Starting point is 00:41:00 Leto. I'm gonna do my way. I'm going to do my way. And sing a Nine Inch Nails banger and make it slutty pop. Oh, my God. When you hear, oh, honey, I'll do anything for you. It's like a thousand miles. You're so right.
Starting point is 00:41:19 It is truly one of those songs that is welcome every time. Every time. Drug alert. There's going to be a few songs on this list that we're going to say, drug alert. Sometimes you listen to a song and it feels like a drug. And whether or not you're sober, you can experience the high of listening to a song
Starting point is 00:41:42 like On a Roll by Ashley O. I feel like I'm on poppers even talking about it. Me too. Hey, I'm on a roll. Come on. She's basically singing Hey, I'm a hole. Not no. Number 280.
Starting point is 00:41:59 My hair looks fierce. Amanda Lepore. Nightlife legend. Pop music superstar. My hair looks fierce is amazing. I'm also partial to doing it my way. Doing it my way. I wake up in the morning between three and four, and I go to the bathroom between four and five.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Like, she's giving us her schedule. I mean, what I... She's constantly walking us through what she's doing. Her life. So in this song, she says, I just show up, all done up, dance, do my thing, get paid, and I'm out. And you know what? That is exactly how I want my night to go.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Oh my God. Okay, can we say that we were recently somewhere where Amanda Lepore showed up? Yes. And it was just like, this is her life, and she's figured it out. 100%. She comes in, sits down. Shows up. Shows up, chats with a couple of people, all done up. She's out. 100%. She comes in, sits down. Shows up. Shows up, chats to a couple,
Starting point is 00:42:45 chats with a couple people. All done up. She's out. She gets paid, she's out. I just show up, all done up, dance,
Starting point is 00:42:53 do my thing, get paid, and I'm out. Sometimes she doesn't even dance and that's amazing. She needs to prove nothing. Amanda Lepore has nothing to prove. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:43:04 It's Rilla Culture number two. Amanda Lepore has nothing to prove. It's Rilla Culture number two. Amanda Lepore has nothing to prove. 279. Tatiana doing same parts instead of Roxy Andrews' verse in Red You Wrote You, RuPaul's Drag Race, All Stars 2.
Starting point is 00:43:21 There's nothing wrong with Roxy Andrews's no and we've all as a community i was thinking about this today you were thinking about this today i was thinking about this today when i was reviewing the list as a community have we have we bullied this poor person see here's the thing about roxy andrews and we can say this a natural bully herself and but had to do work to not be that and then wasn't and now i think it's all in good fun but i wonder if it was okay for us as a community and i'm saying us because i feel because i've i've
Starting point is 00:43:58 taking ownership taking ownership i've partaken in this very adult of like using her trauma the bus the bus to make fun of her and i'm kind of being i'm kind of seriously opening up this conversation all right saying you know everyone in agreement that her verse and reggie wrote you is garbage like it's the only one i know by heart i'm roxy anderson i'm here to make it clear i know you want my baby that's why i got right here was the big time season five i'm gonna make it right give me a stone challenge and i'll give you what you like um we're skipping we're skipping um um something like uh room for monsters i forget so maybe i'm not off book so but and that's the beauty of that's the beauty of that verse is that you think you have a total understanding of it and yet you don't and that's why i think we should maybe reconsider
Starting point is 00:44:50 i know that the the version with tatiana doing same parts is what's on the list but i think as a community we really have to examine ourselves should we make history right now and spit in the face of the blue ribbon panel and say the original Red You Wrote You is actually what's here? Yeah. Number 279. Red You Wrote You,
Starting point is 00:45:14 RuPaul's Drag Race, All Stars 2. Addendum. Addendum. I never would have predicted that we would have spit in the face of the blue ribbon panel. And we're going to be hearing about it,
Starting point is 00:45:23 probably on Twitter, which we should all be leaving i know i'm not i know number 278 and i am telling you i'm not going by both jennifer's and amber riley And Amber Riley. For multiple women to definitively approach this song, a very difficult song to sing. Oh, yeah. But for the fact that multiple women can walk up to this Goliath as David herself, say, I'm going to fling my stone.
Starting point is 00:46:01 And it's a rangy song. You have to be able to go all the way up there with your voice, you know, and be powerful. And you have to go, you have to be able to say, and make it like your own every time. You know, no disrespect to Hudson and Amber. Wow. But something about Jennifer Holliday doing that
Starting point is 00:46:27 eight shows a week is a lot. She had to do that a lot more times than the other girls. And of course, we never forget her American Idol performance
Starting point is 00:46:36 of the song where she... I don't know what happened. I don't know what happened. She's a little possessed every time she sings this. Absolutely. I think you have to.
Starting point is 00:46:44 There has to be a demon inside you. Well, Effie takes happened. She's a little possessed every time she sings this. Absolutely. I think you have to. There has to be a demon inside you. Well, Effie takes over. You're Effie. And Effie is demonic. Effie has had a demon put in her. The reverse exorcism in that scene. I think it's the moment where they say, Effie, we all got pain. A demon entered
Starting point is 00:46:59 her. Did you see me get the chills? A demon might have entered you, honey. I might need a shaman to come. I might have to blow air through a tube and they suck out you know the demon i hate it when that happens number 277 do you want to come over britney spears it's a song that causes joy in the hearts of i think many millions but I can pinpoint the moment when it brought us much joy was New Year's Eve, a couple years ago,
Starting point is 00:47:28 COVID New Year's. COVID New Year's. That first COVID New Year's where we were very careful. We obviously all got tested, but then we got a house and it was just a few of us. Had a few drinks.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Absolutely. Played some songs. Had a good time. But the tide shifted, honey, when Do You Want to Come Over by Britney Spears came on. Yeah. Do You Want to Come Over sort of will make you really move. And it made us sort of all strut around a little pool table. Remember that?
Starting point is 00:47:58 I remember that. We all just ran around a pool table. But, okay, can I say, what song did we say? We said, Total Occupation of the Heart is catharsis. No song does catharsis better. No song does coy better than Do You Wanna Come Over. Do you wanna come over?
Starting point is 00:48:12 I love that it's like a little bit not even a V sound, it's a B sound. Do you wanna come over? Do you wanna come over? Just let me know. Like, I... Do you wanna come over? If I could, you know, I don't think I'm the greatest flirt but I think if I were to remember
Starting point is 00:48:28 if I were to you know access the part of me that is I would just think of this song yeah yeah activate that
Starting point is 00:48:35 I think next time you have a flirty um uh instinct just think of yourself as Britney Spears and do you want to come over? should we change the
Starting point is 00:48:44 I was gonna say change the V to a B do you want to come over? Should we change the... I was going to say, change the V to a B. Do you want to come over? I did it. This is freedom. We've earned this. This is our 300th episode. 300. We have earned the right to do everything we do today.
Starting point is 00:49:02 Such as say that this next song is only a little bit better than Do You Want to Come Over? Number 276. Natural Woman, Aretha Franklin. Written by Carole King. Looking out on the morning rain I used to feel
Starting point is 00:49:21 so uninspired. One of the best bridges. Oh, baby, what you done to me? What you done to me? You make me feel so good inside. Good inside. And I just don't wanna be Close to you, you make me feel so alive
Starting point is 00:49:50 I mean, any of these songs that make us sing I had to look back at Doug Let's get Doug in here Doug, come in here now Doug, you're invited We wanna hear your input Is this mic on? Okay, Doug, come in here now doug we want to hear your input is this mic on okay come in this is an
Starting point is 00:50:06 important moment because you know we've we've now gone through 25 of the songs of the top 300 and we need and which is surreal 40 come in and close the door for sound purposes thank you do you want to use this one which which makes you want to well here there's lots of shit on that seat that one's on over here so come on over here so i guess what i want to use this one? Which mic do you want to use? Well, there's lots of shit on that seat. That one's on over here. So come on over here. So I guess what I want to know is, so far, what do you think of the list? Do you think, do you agree? Do you even know a lot of these songs?
Starting point is 00:50:33 Do you know a lot of the songs? Know about half of the songs that you've said. Okay. And they're great. And they're great. What kind of songs are you looking for? Like, what do you hope makes the list? I hope it's diverse, right?
Starting point is 00:50:46 Okay, well, I think we've done that. I do too. I mean, you've went from Beyonce to Fall Out Boy to Bonnie Tyler to Aretha. That's what I like. That's culture. That's culture. That's right, 100%.
Starting point is 00:50:59 We've had nice Beatles conversations with you before. We've had nice Katy Perry, Celine Dion conversations. What do you think is the pinnacle of music? Beatles? For me? Of pop music. Yeah, the Beatles. I think that changed everything.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Well, we can reveal to you right now. There are no Beatles songs. That's okay. There's none. Here's what I would say to you, Doug. Here's what I'd throw out there. I don't think our next artist on the list gave a fuck about the beatles when she recorded this track and i want to know a if you even know this song or if you even know this artist because number 275 my head
Starting point is 00:51:37 and my heart ava max do you know who ava max is no i think you would do a better job of explaining. Okay, so Ava Max is sort of a pop singer-songwriter. And one thing about her is she has one side of her hair is really long. And one side of her hair is really short. You've seen her? Yes. Yeah. Yes. Impressions on that.
Starting point is 00:51:58 You think it's a great look? I think it's a great look. Love it. She's been doing it for years now at this point. Yeah. Do you think it's something she can just sustain for the rest of her career? I doubt she'll want to. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:08 I think at this point she's committed too long, and she just has to stick with it for the rest of her life. Yeah. So she's going to be an old woman in the nursing home with, you know, with one side long and one side short. Now, Bowen, this song. Oh, my God. It's kind of a sampling of Around the World.
Starting point is 00:52:29 La, la, la, la, la. But it's just one of the most powerful. This is a drug alert song. Drug alert. Yeah, there's going to be lots of drugs done. So, Doug, just to ask you a question. What's the sort of, when you were out there going to concerts, were you into the Grateful Dead? I've been to a bunch of Grateful Dead shows.
Starting point is 00:52:51 And you smoked reefer? Yes. So this is sort of the straight culture with drugs. But I agree. I want that. Oh my God. Josh Sharpener and Jackson just went to a Phish concert in Madison Square Garden where a man fell from the nosebleeds and lived. And lived to tell the tale? That is, you know, but a Phish concert, I think everyone is vibing. Sort of fucked up.
Starting point is 00:53:18 But having a good time. I respect it. I would love to have gone to a Grateful Dead concert. 100%. 100%. 100%. Doug, would you want to go to, let's say, the Chromatica Ball, the Lady Gaga concert? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:53:31 I like Lady Gaga. You think she's talented? Well, she appears on the list many times. She appears on the list many times. Are you excited for her Top Gun song? I didn't know it was coming. She'll be doing the song from the new Top Gun film starring Tom Cruise.
Starting point is 00:53:43 Well, that will encourage me to actually tune in. I have a feeling. Wow. Okay, so it's sort of trying to be the new Take My Breath Away. I like it. Kind of cool. Doug, what do you think has been the cultural impact of Las Culturistas and how has it changed your life to be a part of it? Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:53:59 That's a lot to put into words, but I would have to say you've really opened me up culturally to the gay community more than I ever have, and I love it. Well, we're happy to have done that. What do you love and not like about the gay community? I mean, what's not to love? Thank you. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:54:19 And we really want to thank you for being here to help us announce 2755 My Head and My Heart by Ava Max. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Doug, to be real, we love Doug so much. We love Doug and thank you for being part of the fabric of Lost Couch. I mean, thanks for having me. Thanks for always making us sound really good. I try. Making us laugh. Making us giggle.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Setting a good vibe for the guests. Now get lost. Get lost. Thanks, Doug. It's been amazing to have you and we'll be checking in with you later. Everyone give a round of for the guests. Now get lost. Get lost. Thanks, Doug. It's been amazing to have you, and we'll be checking in with you later. Everyone give a round of applause for Doug. Hey, I'm Jay Shetty, and I'm the host of On Purpose. My latest episode is with Jelly Roll. This episode is one of the most honest and raw interviews I've ever had. We go deep into Jelly Roll's life story from being in and out of prison from the age of 13 to being one of today's biggest artists. We talk about guilt, shame, body image, and huge life transformations.
Starting point is 00:56:49 I was a desperate, delusional dreamer. And the desperate part got me in a lot of trouble. I encourage delusional dreamers. Be a delusional dreamer. Just don't be a desperate, delusional dreamer. I just had such an anger. I was just so mad at life. Everything that wasn't right was everybody's fault but mine.
Starting point is 00:57:03 I had such a victim mentality. I took zero accountability for anything mad at life. Everything that wasn't right was everybody's fault but mine. I had such a victim mentality. I took zero accountability for anything in my life. I was the kid that if you asked what happened, I immediately started with everything but me. It took years for me to break that, like years of work. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Trust me, you won't want to miss this one. on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:57:27 Trust me, you won't want to miss this one. On Thanksgiving Day, 1999, a five-year-old boy floated alone in the ocean. He had lost his mother trying to reach Florida from Cuba. He looked like a little angel. I mean, he looked so fresh. And his name, Elian Gonzalez, will make headlines everywhere. Elian Gonzalez. Elian. Elian. Elian. Elian. Elian Gonzalez. At the heart of the story is a young boy and the question of who he belongs with. His father in Cuba. Mr. Gonzalez wanted to go home and he wanted to take his son with him. Or his relatives in Miami. Imagine that your mother died trying to get you to freedom.
Starting point is 00:58:13 At the heart of it all is still this painful family separation. Something that as a Cuban, I know all too well. Listen to Chess Peace, the Elian Gonzalez story, as part of the My Cultura podcast network, available on the iHeartRad Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We're not making good time at all. No.
Starting point is 00:58:36 So we better keep going. Number 274. Stronger. Marnie Cover and Girls. Allison Williams. I think it was better than Kanye West Absolutely here we go Number 273 Meet me at our spot Willow and a boy named Tyler
Starting point is 00:58:51 The band the duo between Tyler and Willow Is called The Anxiety The Anxiety So it's kind of chaotically credited and listed on Spotify Or the streaming services or whatever It's Willow the Anxiety And this Tyler fellow Well speaking of spotify or the streaming services or whatever it's willow the anxiety and this this this tyler fellow well speaking of um you know uh roxy andrews and willow the number 272 wet my hair
Starting point is 00:59:14 willow speaking of roxy andrews from several songs ago i mean remember when willow came out with this i'll never forget i had an internship at the show teen mom too and i worked for a woman named unique yes and and i one day unique was playing the song with my hair by willow and she said to me she turned to me i was an intern and she said i love this song and i was like you know she's 12 and she sat back in her chair and she looked at me and she said are you telling me i was dancing to a 12 yearyear-old in the club? And I was like, you mean? I think so.
Starting point is 00:59:48 I think that's what happened. And she laughed and laughed and laughed and then she couldn't ever get over that she was 12. I still am not over the fact that she was 12 years old. I think it made me a little uneasy even at the time. I was like, yeah, but this is a little girl. Pop up up the beds and the swag on. It was like watching Chloe Grace Moretz say cunt in Kick-Ass.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Yeah, but I don't know. It sort of makes you really hopeful about the younger kids, huh? I guess. Number 271, and this is going to get us into trouble, Beau. This is going to get us into trouble. Wild Wild West,
Starting point is 01:00:28 sorry but Will Smith. Wild Wild West is that song. It's pretty good. Oh my God. Even the trailer of the movie, it would play on TV growing up and it'd be like, that looks like the coolest movie ever made.
Starting point is 01:00:43 Salma Hayek culture. Salma Hayek culture. Salma Hayek culture. Garcelle Beauvais culture. Absolutely. Kevin Kline culture. Kevin Kline culture. And yes, Will Smith culture. And also, you see a little bit of his butt in the movie.
Starting point is 01:00:57 You always say this every time we mention Rob Weld. In our 300 episodes, it's a recurring theme. Is it? I think you've mentioned it. Number 270. Men in Black. Apologies, Will Smith. This Men in Black,
Starting point is 01:01:11 this song, Men in Black. Uh, yeah. And then they go, The Men in Black. Oof. You know, as much as, like,
Starting point is 01:01:21 Will Smith's music hasn't aged terribly well, but it's been it's aged well enough to end up on the list he did do a great job of blending the R&B with the hip hop absolutely and also he always
Starting point is 01:01:35 he was always going to say I have a movie well I'm gonna make that title of my song Synergy and what I want to shout out most respect to is everyone that works in the Men in Black attraction at Universal Studios Florida because that song plays in a loop
Starting point is 01:01:52 at the gift shop and it's never anything else. And I have to really salute everyone that works there for not... And we're raising our glass to you. In all the right ways. All my underdogs. The people working at Men in Black, the ride.
Starting point is 01:02:06 The dirty little freaks. Dirty little freaks. We hope you survive hearing Men in Black. At least 200 times a day. 100%. Cheers. We're gonna sip. Number 269.
Starting point is 01:02:19 Miami. Truly, regretfully, but definitely Will Smith. Party in the city when the heat is on, on the beach till the break is done. Welcome to Miami. Bienvenido a Miami. I mean, iconic culture. I'm there. I see the neon.
Starting point is 01:02:35 I see the Art Deco. I'm at South Beach. I'm on Coke. I was going to bring up cocaine. I'm at the W Hotel. Getting sucked off. I'm at the W Hotel getting sucked off. I'm there. I'm getting sucked off while I'm sucking on a mojito.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Thank you. How good does that sound right now? A mojito sounds so good. But only in Miami. How do we order mojitos? Hey, is it a thing of you can still order cocktails to go? Maybe not. In LA?
Starting point is 01:03:07 Okay, find out and figure it out. Find out. Because we're craving mojitos because we started talking about the city of Miami because the song Miami by Will Smith is on the list. Okay. All right. 268. Smooth Operator by Sade. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:03:20 Smooth Operator. She really was a smooth operator. From the album Diamond Life. She had a diamond life. She really was a smooth operator. From the album Diamond Life. She had a diamond life. She has a diamond life still. Yeah. No, when you sort of, this is what I would call like heightened, advanced, like elevated elevator music.
Starting point is 01:03:39 Oh, yeah. Elevated elevator. Elevated elevator. Hundo. Hundo. That's all there is to say. I have nothing else to say about that. Let's move on.
Starting point is 01:03:50 Although, wait, can I say? No, I want you to say. It's not off of this album, but we played, we did play Promise, the follow-up to Diamond Life, this album, on Fire Island. Yes, oh, I remember it. When we were making, like, grilling stuff. Vibe. It was, and the sun was remember it when we were making like grilling stuff vibe it was and the sun was setting we were like eating food it was the perfect vibe that was iconic sort of bow and yang um vibe curation i i put it on i was like this is like cooking music a hundred percent and cook we did and cook sometimes elevator music goes into cooking music. Smooth operator.
Starting point is 01:04:26 More like good cooking. Good cooking. Hey. Let's go. Number 267. On my own from Les Miserables. Who's your favorite? Who's your favorite on What's Your Faith?
Starting point is 01:04:38 Okay. This is a really complicated, difficult thing to explore. But the best singer of all time is Lea Michele. Lea Michele took Epony into new heights. And it's not on the list, but when she dies in a little fall of rain, she gives it
Starting point is 01:04:55 everything. She's in that fucking page boy cap, the trench coat on stage. Go to YouTube. And also, here's the thing. When you're listening to On My Own, and it starts with, On My Own, you fucked up. It's supposed to listen to the version that starts with,
Starting point is 01:05:12 And now I'm all alone again, no one to turn to. Yeah. History I ain't going to. And she goes, The city goes to bed, and I can live inside my head. Beautiful song. And you're transported to a time when everyone was dirty and wet.
Starting point is 01:05:40 Except for Marius. Marius was always clean. Keeping it clean. And Miss Cosette, too. Squeaky clean. Squeaky clean. And Miss Cosette, too. Squeaky clean. Squeaky clean. Castle on a cloud. More like, no dirt on my face.
Starting point is 01:05:50 Honey. Honey. Let's keep going. 266. Stole. Kelly Rowland. Stole by Kelly Rowland is... Do you know the song?
Starting point is 01:06:02 I don't think I know the song. Oh my god, Bowen. You're playing it. We don't have time. The flow will dictate the feel. We didn't even
Starting point is 01:06:17 have this problem in the 200. In the 200, we got to this point at number 50. Okay, here's what i'll say i'm not gonna play the song but stole by kelly roland is all about people who died too young oh my and it was her first like big single and she talks about uh someone who played basketball and then i think got involved in bad shit and ended up dying. And one of her riffs at the end of the song is, he had game!
Starting point is 01:06:45 Oh! Oh my god. Greg was always getting banged from 20 feet away. He had game! Oh! And this is the song where she goes, like Marilyn Monroe.
Starting point is 01:06:59 Yeah, I know this song. Wait, we are making horrible time. I'm so stressed out. Number 265. Bang, bang, my baby shot me down. Nancy Sinatra. Number 264.
Starting point is 01:07:13 Bang, bang, my baby shot me down. Lady Gaga. And number 263. Bang, bang, my baby shot me down. Bowen Yang. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:07:21 Would you like to perform it? I was five and he was six. We rode on horses made of sticks. He wore black and I wore white. He would always win the fight. Bang bang! He shot me down. Oh my god, vulnerable.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Bang bang, I hit the ground. Oh my god. Bang bang, that awful sound. Bang bang That awful sound Bang bang My baby shot me Down We'll have to perform that soon
Starting point is 01:07:55 At the duplex this summer Just do the end Oh like the last chorus I'll just do the last The last sort of belt. Yes. Bang, bang, my baby shot me down. Number 262.
Starting point is 01:08:19 Bang, bang, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj. Enough said. I mean, three of the greatest talents coming together to sort of deliver an answer to Lady Marmalade, which did not make the list. It's me, Jesse, and Ari. If they test me, they sorry. Let's keep going. It's Mix Mascara with Scrizze and a bottle with Snicky Votato with uh, uh. Number 261.
Starting point is 01:08:41 If I Dream, RuPaul. If I dream. It's one of the most beautiful melodies. And whenever you hear it start to play when one of the queens gets emotional talking to their child self, you are affected. Oh my God, you are really affected.
Starting point is 01:09:00 You're so affected. I think that Lucian guy wrote this. Number 260. Satisfied by Renee Elise Goldsberry. One of the greats. Renee. Lynn. Lynn.
Starting point is 01:09:13 Shout out to Lynn. Shout out to Lynn. Shout out to Lynn. Who is writing new songs for the Little Mermaid. Let's not forget. Oh, new songs for the Little Mermaid. New songs for the Little Mermaid. Perchance we get a fish singing something like Satisfied by Renee Elise.
Starting point is 01:09:26 Perchance Scuttle played by Nora, Lum, Awkwafina. He's after me cause I'm his guy and his sister and I'm satisfied.
Starting point is 01:09:33 I have to be naive to sit that aside. Maybe that is why I introduced him to Eliza and now that's his bride. Nice going and delicate. He was right. He wouldn't be satisfied.
Starting point is 01:09:43 Number 259. Jungle Kitty, Bebe Zahara Benet. And the music video really elevated this one. High production value. High production value. Like, I could have seen, you know, this could be a big budget film. And I love when a music video tells a story. I mean, I love to see pop stars act.
Starting point is 01:10:01 Yes. You know? And Bebe Zahara Benet, pop star. She's one of the biggest popstars and she's really acting. There's a scene in the, I don't really want to spoil the music video,
Starting point is 01:10:09 but there is a scene in the beginning of the music video where she is interrogating someone and she says, who sent you? I said, who sent you?
Starting point is 01:10:20 Amazing line read. And she laughs like this. Bebe! Ratatatatata yeah I'm pussy bitch which did not make the list that is Jungle Kitty you're right
Starting point is 01:10:38 next up 258 Seasons of Love Rent one of, Seasons of Love, Rent. One of the most amazing songs. When you can just stand on stage as a company and connect with an audience merely through song, and it really is like sort of like, it's like a transitional song into, you know, an act of Rent.
Starting point is 01:10:58 You know, it's really powerful. And I think measuring your life in love is something we can all live by. We can all live by that. And Tracy Tom's in the movie version. Measure, measure your life in love is something we can all live by. We can all live by that. And Tracy Tom's in the movie version. Measure! Measure your life in love! 257.
Starting point is 01:11:14 King of anything, Sara Bareilles. I love this song because it gave us a new comeback, which was, who made you king of anything? So far, we have two out of the four leads of girls five ever represented on the song renee sarah pretty cool and there will be no more there will be no busy phillips and paula pell did not make the song they did not actually park did not make the list weren't we supposed to have paula pell on this podcast at some point she'll be on yeah at some point she's the best but i remember like it was like confirmed happening and then didn't i know i think. Starting point is 01:11:52 Live at the Oscars. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Who could forget? I was going to say who could forget. Oh, my God. Ready? One, two, three. Who could forget when she was a little sharp and he was really flat?
Starting point is 01:12:04 And they sang together and, you know, had that moment. To be real, though, that moment at the end where the camera is in their face and they basically have a post-coital, post-nut clarity look at each other as if we had just watched them fuck in front of hundreds of people. Thousands of people in that Dolby Theater. It was culture. It was like, it did... Not that this goes without saying, and everyone agrees with this, but it was one of those Oscar moments
Starting point is 01:12:36 that you're like, wow, this is only at the Oscars. It was only at the Oscars moment, and it was culture. And Shallow, talk about knowing it from the beginning tell me something girl we were recording this podcast
Starting point is 01:12:51 the day the trailer dropped in like June 2018 or something too long ago too long ago but like we were off book on the fucking song that day

Starting point is 01:14:00 and really debate out loud with herself just exactly you know not even really a debate i mean she's really she's it's contemplative and it's devastating it's this is one of the most devastating songs in musical theater but i have a question to ask yeah is this one of the songs about is this a song about realizing that you're a jester flop? Mm-hmm. Send in the clowns, more like, I am the jester. More like, I really flopped. I am a fool. Jester flopping in the square. The clown square.

Starting point is 01:15:01 transportive I think there are not that many songs on this list that take you to a place. Maybe Will Smith, Miami, but Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett takes you there. And can we talk about
Starting point is 01:15:13 being a global brand? Honey, entrepreneur. He wrote a song and it became a global brand where I want to go have a kong fritter today. Today. I want to have a cheeseburger Fritter today. I want to have a cheeseburger in paradise today. Heinz 57

Starting point is 01:17:12 And didn't he also date Rachel Bilson? They did date when they were shooting. So he sort of has a type, which is like brunette star of a teen soap. He was... I think he's one of the most attractive people in the world he's really cute seth cohen i was like there's no one better remember seth cohen there was you he was the original internet boyfriend yeah seth and also like how genius to make him like such a freaking freako nerd and everyone was like this guy's a freaking cretin and meanwhile he was like

Starting point is 01:18:32 at the airport that show was so good that show was so good but if you do go back and watch it like does not really hold up on a writing level you're like wait
Starting point is 01:18:39 this is horrible writing it gives me hope though we can write an horrible show that lasts totally that impacts the culture. That lives in the hearts. Thinking about that.

We talk about guilt, shame, body image, and huge life transformations. I was a desperate delusional dreamer and the desperate part got me in a lot of trouble. I encourage delusional dreamers. Be, delusional dreamer, and the desperate part got me in a lot of trouble. I encourage delusional dreamers. Be a delusional dreamer. Just don't be a desperate, delusional dreamer. I just had such an anger. I was just so mad at life. Everything that wasn't right was everybody's fault but mine. I had such a victim mentality. I took zero accountability for anything in my life. I was the kid that if you asked what happened, I immediately started with everything
Starting point is 01:22:05 but me. It took years for me to break that, like years of work. Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Trust me, you won't want to miss this one. Number 249, Firework by Katy Perry there's so few songs that could ever start I mean talk about first opening lyrics do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Starting point is 01:22:34 and then it went on to become a hit despite do you ever feel like a plastic bag amazing okay we're actually making good time because we're at 50 and we're an hour in that's perfect so we have 50 more to go if we spend another hour
Starting point is 01:22:49 it's a two hour episode of a hundred songs and if we keep it up well let's just keep going let's just keep going number 248 driver's license by Olivia Rodrigo
Starting point is 01:23:00 documented moment on this podcast of me not knowing this song, you introducing it to me, me going who's this Olivia Rodrigo girl? Weeks later, I stand. Even more weeks after that, the whole country stands.
Starting point is 01:23:16 And then the world, because this again is the great global songbook. Yes, you're right, I'm sorry. This is an international, galactic even, list. The great galactic songbook list. The Great Galactic Songbook More Like. Number 247. Tattoo. Jordan Sparks.
Starting point is 01:23:31 Just like a tattoo, I'll always have you. Really kind of, that lyric is really it. Just like a tattoo, I'll always have you. Yeah, you're like, I guess. It's kind of giving stuffer. It giving it's giving what girl here's a laser treatment you can go to yeah hello hello it might hurt but what hurts more the embarrassment you have to carry with you because of that damn tattoo it's too so big and colorful i I assume. Probably. Colorful tattoos, yay or nay? It depends.
Starting point is 01:24:07 Okay. Number 246. Fergalicious Fergie. Definition, make the boys go loco. This is an autobiography. 100%. And we've said on a rule of culture that Ashley Simpson's autobiography is the best autobiography
Starting point is 01:24:28 but this is a close second it's number two and even autobiography isn't even on the list it's different strokes there are songs from autobiography on the list that's for certain but Fergalicious by Fergie
Starting point is 01:24:44 I just it's a crazy song this this was actually a specific time in the culture when you could write a song like let's say wind it up by gwen stefani wow or fergalicious by fergie london bridge by fergie songs that like had nine different things going on in them this is a crazy fucking song it's one of the most insane songs ever and it starts with that like beehive
Starting point is 01:25:12 and then also Fergalicious definition first of all there is no definition it's not a word and so what she's saying is that Fergalicious by definition make the boys go loco which doesn't make is that Fergalicious, by definition, make the boys go loco, which doesn't make sense. Like, Fergalicious, meaning make the boys go loco? That's not a verb.
Starting point is 01:25:32 What did you do last night, Fergalicious? Huh? Fergalicious? Well, I went out in Fergalicious. Oh. You made the boys go loco? Well, yeah, that's what it means, by definition. Fergalicious definition.
Starting point is 01:25:47 It's one of those grammatical things in a song that like, people only focus on Concrete Jungle where dreams are made of. Oh, that doesn't make grammatical sense. No. Fergalicious definition make the boys go crazy. They always claim they know me. Come to me. Call me Stacy.
Starting point is 01:26:01 But I'm the F to the E-R-G. The I to the E-N. Can no other lady put it down like me? Think about how famous you have to be to even put this song out. People have to know who you are. They have to buy into the reality that we, as the listening audience, know who Fergie is so that when she's saying all these things, we sort of understand.
Starting point is 01:26:17 Yes. We can see it, smell it, taste it, fuck it, snort it. That her name is Fergie and that and also that people call her Stacy but she's the f to the e r g the i the e and can another lady put it down like me number 245 work it missy elliott is it worth it I say yes this was one of those songs I think I was like nine years old when this song came out nine ten eleven but slamming your pussy to the ground like that. My mom was driving her Toyota Sienna minivan on my way to piano lessons. And this song would come on, 95.7 KISS FM.
Starting point is 01:26:56 And like, call before you come. I need to shave my cha-cha. I go, okay. need to shave my cha-cha i go okay i guess i am an adult now because i am i want to shave my cha-cha before the man comes over speaking of the man number 244 one minute man missy elliott break me up show me what you got because i don't want no one minute missy elliott One of the greatest Everyone needs to, if you partake in marijuana Smoke a bowl, just watch the old videos The I Can't Stand the Rain one
Starting point is 01:27:35 Which one's that? What one's that one called? Doesn't matter We're a little buzzed We're drinking champs Tonight I'ma make you want me Make you want me And i'ma give you some attention oh yeah the rain super duper fly that's what i meant okay number 243 lose control
Starting point is 01:27:56 missy elliott this is one of those songs that could make you snap like if you hear it like music makes you lose control. It's just like, it's like Fergalicious, the beginning, where you're just like, your brain has no choice. It has to, like, Floor filler. It's like the equivalent of a strobe light. Yes. Musically. Like,
Starting point is 01:28:19 Ultraman, like, strobe effect gives kids seizures in Japan. You could get a seizure from listening to this song. You really could. Number 242. Get your freak on, Missy Elliott. Now go! Now go!
Starting point is 01:28:39 I mean, like, she fucking hawks a loogie in this song. And we still said, I would like to listen to it again and again and again and again. I just had a visceral response to you doing that. Because she fucking goes for it. She really does. No. Let's keep going. Number 241.
Starting point is 01:29:00 So beautiful. My Immortal Evanescence. Talk about this song. This song, like, My Immortal Evanescence. Talk about this song. This song skyrocketed Evanescence. They're so famous still. And they're as big as U2. As big as Carrie Holson.
Starting point is 01:29:16 It's Coldplay, U2, Carrie Holson, Evanescence. These are the big names of now. And it started with, of course, Bring Me to Life, which did not make the list because when they followed it up with My Immortal. That's when you knew they were here to stay. When you cried, I wiped away all of your tears. When you threw your eyes, I closed all of your fears.
Starting point is 01:29:40 And I held your hand through all of these years And you still have all of me It's like a hymn. Hymnal. Number 240. Biddy biddy bum bum, Selena. The queen of Tejano music. Gone too soon.
Starting point is 01:30:04 Gone too Soon. When she said, the world said, absolutely. Absolutely. Number 239. Leave, Get Out, JoJo. When she was 13 years old, she came out and she said,
Starting point is 01:30:20 I'm singing this song, The House Down. Leave, Get Out. Now The House Down. Leave. Get out. Now. Right now. Now. It's the end of you and me.
Starting point is 01:30:31 Now. It's too late. Now. Can't wait for you to be gone. Because I know about it. Who? Wonder. Why?
Starting point is 01:30:41 How I bought all the lies. You said that you would treat me right, but you were just a waste of time. A waste of time! But there was something major about JoJo being in, at least being class of 2008 in high school. Like, she was our age. I think she was like the first big pop star that was our age putting out hits. I think she was, well, you're famously a little younger than me, but like, younger 91 i think she's born 91 yeah can we look it up really puts her in your sort of purview even though you were 90 november 90 she's she's december 20th 1990 so she and so
Starting point is 01:31:14 she's our age she's 90 whoa she's not taylor she's she's she's jojo i'll never forget sitting in information processing class in ninth grade when she really came out with leave get out and the senior that i used to sit next to her name was jasmine and she turned to me and she said i can't believe this girl is 13 and you're like i'm 13 and i was like i was 14 oh and and that's when we started hooking up you hooked up with the senior no oh my god um scandal just a little bit better than that song is number 238. Don't Stop Believin' Journey. I mean, an amazing song that has so many lives.
Starting point is 01:31:52 So many lives. So many lives. Journey, and then Family Guy brings it back. Glee brings it back. The Sopranos. The Sopranos brings it back. Oh my god. Don't stop. The end. Blackout.
Starting point is 01:32:03 Just... And when the Glee kids sang this one, you knew the Glee kids were going to be then capable of something like Blurred Lines. Or then capable of something like Walking on Sunshine mashed up with Halo by Beyonce. 100%. 100%. Or that, you know, Darren Criss would sing Teenage Dream so beautifully
Starting point is 01:32:26 even though he didn't sing in the story don't stop believing I know what you mean don't give me that look you how dare you disrespect Darren Criss I'm not disrespecting Darren Criss Darren Criss is a gay king he's not even gay
Starting point is 01:32:41 I guess not hey at number 237, this one really is famous. Single ladies, Beyonce. This one really is famous. What? Oh,
Starting point is 01:32:51 oh. Do you remember the dance that she used to do to single ladies? I remember this dance. Sort of one like this? Didn't she have two people? Yeah,
Starting point is 01:32:59 there was two girls behind her. Yes. And they were all doing the dance. And I think the dance, if we were, we're not, but if this was a dance list, Yes. I think it might even make the dance and i think the dance if we were we're not but if this was a dance list yes i think it might even make the top 300 dances of the world dances of
Starting point is 01:33:10 the world it would be salsa rumba single ladies the quick step ballet freestyle uh wedding dances father daughter um cha-cha real smooth real smooth macarena soldier boy soldier boy those Cha Cha Real Smooth. Cha Cha Real Smooth. Macarena. Soulja Boy. Soulja Boy. Those would be sort of the top ten. But this is not a dance list. This is the Great Galactic Songbook. This is the Great Galactic Songbook. It's sort of changing.
Starting point is 01:33:35 Okay. So, next up, and speaking of party dances, number 236. Macarena. Los Del Rio. Do you remember the dance? I think so let's do it together did you ever get self conscious when you were doing the Macarena dance
Starting point is 01:33:58 about shaking your ass at the end? no, I always committed and you know I would get so shy that girl who sings in between the choruses yeah was was telling the story that people don't pay attention to yeah no they weren't like she was flirting with a boy named nicorino in the song yeah nicorino nicorino oh yeah Oh, yeah. You can't have me. And then, like, literally, one of my first moments in the culture of going,
Starting point is 01:34:32 now who is she? Yeah, right. It was one of the first now who is she moments. Can I just say that this is how the song goes. Wait, that's not how it goes. That's... This is not the song goes. Wait, that's not how it goes. That's... This is not the pop version. That's not the pop version. Oh, radio version.
Starting point is 01:34:53 No. What the fuck? Here we go. This is my girl. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, my God, Bo. That... You're transported. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh my god, Bo. You're transported.
Starting point is 01:35:08 Oh my god. You're absolutely shaking your ass when this comes on. It's so surreal. This was a simpler time. The time was so simple. Oh my god. Does she start the song? I think so.
Starting point is 01:35:25 Oh, you forget about this part. Oh! And he's really going for it. You can hear her grinning. Yeah, you can. Wow. She is the set spot. You hear the men sort of saying, Macarena, Macarena.
Starting point is 01:35:57 Hey, Macarena. Wow. People don't realize that that's a real storytelling song. Yeah. That she's like the best, the fucking star of the show. Absolutely. Of the venue. Number 235.
Starting point is 01:36:12 There are worse things I could do. Stalker Channing. You know, it's interesting that you put Stalker on this. I know of one other person who's done a good version of this. The Hudgens. The Hudgens.
Starting point is 01:36:26 Well, stay tuned. Stay tuned. Let's keep going. Stockard should have been Oscar nominated for this. Absolutely. Absolutely. Number 234. Since you've been gone, Kelly Clarkson.
Starting point is 01:36:36 This feels low. Well. This feels low, I'm going to say. I'm going to speak on your behalf, and I think you agree. I didn't make the list. It wasn't up to me. I know. to say i'm gonna speak on your behalf and i think you agree i didn't make the list it wasn't up to me i know but i think but you must have a response to this or an emotional response to being at 234 here's what i'll say it's on the list and so therefore it's like i can only complain so much i would say that this is a sort of banger forever and it did sort of kickstart the conversation
Starting point is 01:36:59 about max martin okay the first big old that's not really true though because he was working with factory Boys for years and stuff like that. And Britney Spears. But anyway. But I know what you mean. What I want to say is that since you've been gone,
Starting point is 01:37:10 made Max Martin, okay? Okay. Number 233, a better song than since you've been gone. The Electric Slide, Disc Jockeys. At block parties, bat mitzvahs,
Starting point is 01:37:20 sweet 16s, graduation parties, you hear The Electric Slide. And you're expected to know it. And you're expected to sort of dance to it the same way that like, don't they do it, don't they dance to it
Starting point is 01:37:33 in 13 going on 30? I think they do. Thriller. I think before Thriller at some point they do Not on the list. Not on the list. They do the electric slide. Maybe you're right. No, I'm getting it wrong. If it came on right now, could you do it well? No.
Starting point is 01:37:49 I don't really remember it. Do you? I don't think the electric slide. You go. You go. I guess I could sort of fake it. You can see it. It's electric.
Starting point is 01:38:08 Wookie, woogie, woogie. Oh, wow. This is one of the best songs ever. It's on the list. Yeah. Okay, number 232. Frosty the Snowman, Fiona Apple. Our first Christmas song.
Starting point is 01:38:18 And Fiona Apple has her own amazing original songs, but she chose to cover Frosty the Snowman. And that was the most impactful song in her career. I think that she knows what's going to move people. And it's Frosty. Yeah. And I never thought of Frosty as being angsty. Until now.
Starting point is 01:38:39 Well, the story is angsty. He melts. He goes away. He dies. He dies. He gets... away he dies he dies he gets frosty dies and he like corrals the chill he like manipulates the children
Starting point is 01:38:51 like frosty is not frosty was a sick pedophile and that's what fiona is good about writing about is good with writing about men who manipulate predators predators frosty the snowman was a fucking predator rot rot no number 231 cha-cha slide mr c cha-cha no y'all this is another one
Starting point is 01:39:16 i would get self-conscious about it's a child because they when they say cha-cha you sort of have to like shake your little ass i guess i just wasn't in my body as much as you were as a child oh i i mean you didn't do the thing like you know uh a middle school dance where you're grinding i mean that we we were dancing in the age of the grind we definitely came of age in the time of grind yeah um but i wasn't grinding to cha-cha real smooth no i'm saying like you weren't comfortable in your body while like cha-cha slideCha Slide would play, like, after Yeah by Usher. Yeah. Not in the left.
Starting point is 01:39:48 Remember Get Low by Lil Jon? Oh, my God. To the windows! To the, wow! To the sweat drop down my balls. Men are so disgusting. Disgusting. Lil Jon, Frosty.
Starting point is 01:40:04 It's insane. Let's move away from men. Number 230. It's Raining Men. The Weather Girls. I guess we couldn't escape. I guess we couldn't escape them. This is a song that is really beautiful.
Starting point is 01:40:17 I mean, could you imagine it's Raining Men? Well, first of all, practically, this would be really scary. It would be really scary think about the men what are they thinking oh my god i'm falling down um you know what this is iconically like sort of like disposable men you know what i mean like it's raining men like whatever who cares but you know what i love about this song when it starts and she goes hi and the other one goes hi we your weather girl and have we got news for you
Starting point is 01:40:51 better listen just the levels there you could tell it was different people and also the choice to do to say these lines like this get ready all you lonely girls and leave those umbrellas at home it just keeps getting higher and bigger and higher to build they and they started at a 10 uh-huh hi hi what do you
Starting point is 01:41:13 think they end up what number do you think they end up at 50 absolutely way off the charts number 229 where are you christmas tay Taylor Momsen, and Faith Hill. We have the film version and the sort of pop radio version. Both equally valid. It would be a tie if it weren't for the fact that they were basically the same song. Right. Now, what do you think this question is asking? She can't find Christmas.
Starting point is 01:41:41 And she's asked, it's like very Judy Blume. It's like, are you there god where are you christmas yeah it's really a song about maturation i think it's not just fear about losing christmas it's i think a fear of what am i going to become as i get older as i'm exposed to more truths as i move forward in my life me cindy loo who what's going to become of me as i step forward into adulthood if christmas changes does that mean i'm going to change as well and what will i become as i become an adult this song is deeper than it's being given credit for and it was written by mariah carey there is no song quite like this in the christmas canon no and it made the list and it made the list number 228 torn natalie embrulia i mean
Starting point is 01:42:27 this bitch wore a fucking zip-up hoodie a sweater whatever the hell and she made it into a moment she gave she gave when she was like when she goes and it goes and she's like spins around that iconic thing you know years ago i tried to write a sketch which was like i don't know what it was but i think it was just people hanging out and the song would come on and like people would just go do the dance i think no one got it and it did not make it into the show that's okay but you can use it for snl if you want i'll use it for snl i'll try to find it thought i saw a man brought to life. He was warm. He came around.
Starting point is 01:43:06 And he was dignified. He told me what it was to cry. But you couldn't be that man I adored. You don't seem to know, seem to care what your heart is for. Well, I don't know him anymore. There's nothing where he used to lie Inspiration has gone dry That's what's going on
Starting point is 01:43:30 Nothing's right, I'm torn I'm all out of faith This is how I feel I'm cold and I am shamed Lying naked on the floor Illusion never changed Into something real. I'm wide awake and I can see
Starting point is 01:43:47 the perfect sky is torn. You're a little late. I'm already torn. Torn. Amazing. It's so good. It's amazing. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:44:02 And the lyrics are like low key. Amazing. Like you're thinking about it. Illusion never changed into something real. I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn. What the fuck? I remember just being scandalized by lying naked on the floor. I was like,
Starting point is 01:44:18 naked? Lying naked on the floor. Yeah. How many times have you been lying? How many times in your life have you lied naked on the floor? Not that many. No, I don't really lie naked on the floor. I lie naked in the bed.
Starting point is 01:44:31 I lie naked in the couch. Yeah, all the time. I walk around naked often. But on the floor, you are at your lowest. No, the floor is filthy. But you had to get naked before you ended up on the floor you can't get lower than the floor the real housewives of salt lake city are back i love that oh my gosh welcome and last season's drama was just the tip of the iceberg you're're recording us? I am disgusted!
Starting point is 01:45:08 Never in a million years after everything we've been through did I think that you would reach out to our sworn enemy. We were friends! How could you do this to me? I don't trust her. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Wednesdays at 9 on Bravo, or stream it on City TV+. I'm Cheryl Swoops,
Starting point is 01:45:23 WNBA champ, three-time Olympian, and Basketball Hall of Famer. I'm a mom, and I'm a woman. I'm Tarika Foster-Brasby, journalist, sports reporter, basketball analyst, a wife, and I'm also a woman. And on our new podcast, we're talking about the real obstacles women face day to day. See, athlete or not, we all know it takes a lot as women to be at the top of our game. We want to share those stories about balancing work and relationships, motherhood, career shifts. You know, just all the s*** we go through.
Starting point is 01:45:57 Because no matter who you are, there are levels to what we experience as women. And T and I, well, we have no problem going there. Listen to Levels to This with Cheryl Swoops and Tarika Foster-Brasby, an iHeart Women's Sports production in partnership with Deep Blue Sports and Entertainment. You can find us on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 01:46:19 Presented by Elf Beauty, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. Elian Gonzalez.
Starting point is 01:46:44 Elian. Elian.
Starting point is 01:47:01 Imagine that your mother died trying to get you to freedom. At the heart of it all is still this painful family separation. Something that as a Cuban, I know all too well. Listen to Chess Peace, the Elian Gonzalez story, as part of the My Cultura podcast network,
Starting point is 01:47:20 available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 01:47:43 We talk about guilt, shame, body image, and huge life transformations. I was a desperate delusional dreamer and the desperate part got me in a lot of trouble. I encourage delusional dreamers. Be a delusional dreamer. Just don't be a desperate delusional dreamer. I just had such an anger. I was just so mad at life. Everything that wasn't right was everybody's fault but mine. I had such a victim mentality. I took zero accountability for anything in my life.
Starting point is 01:48:29 Number 227. Ooh, ah, just a little bit by Gina G. A little bit more! Mm-hmm. Number 226. Creep, TLC. Famously, Katrina Rogers' famous
Starting point is 01:48:43 favorite song. Of all time? There was a time when she would call this her favorite song, which is so funny to me, knowing her and knowing what this is about. So I creep, yeah, just keep it on the down low. It's about cheating. Katrina loves it. It's like my dad re and loving belief I share.
Starting point is 01:49:06 Maybe on the list. We'll see. Stay tuned. Anyway, that one was for you, Katrina. 225. Living la vida loca, Ricky Martin. Gay rights. Gay rights.
Starting point is 01:49:18 This is a song about a gay man worshiping a woman. Yeah. She's in the superstition. Also, just sing it like that. Black cats and voodoo dolls. It's like almost not singing. It's sort of like... It's Bob Dylan.
Starting point is 01:49:33 Yeah. Ricky Martin. This is... Live and Live Eat a Loca is a Bob Dylan song and that's a rule of culture. That's rule of culture number 24.
Starting point is 01:49:41 Live and Live Eat a Loca is a Bob Dylan song. That cat's gonna make me fall. That cat's gonna make me fall. That girl's gonna make me fall. I think Bob Dylan should consider covering this song before he perishes. Fucking croaks.
Starting point is 01:49:55 Croaks. Hey, let's do the next one. Number 224. Intuition Jewel. Kid Moss can't find a job from 03-04 her sort of pop
Starting point is 01:50:09 horror moment and unfortunately Jewel has sort of politically been troublesome lately has she? she's very she loves
Starting point is 01:50:18 she loves one Joe Rogan? yeah we'll cut that out she loves Joe Rogan she's from Alaska girl cut that out. She loves Joe Rogan. She loves Joe Rogan. She's from Alaska, girl.
Starting point is 01:50:28 I don't know what that means. They're very conservative. Very conservative. We're going to cut that. Okay, Intuition. For your heart, your intuition. What is that? Leaning you in the right direction.
Starting point is 01:50:45 What a weird singer. Crazy singer. But we love her. And she appears on the list numerous more times. Numerous times. Jewel. Number 223. Cotton Eye Joe, Rednecks, the band, not necessarily the people.
Starting point is 01:51:00 I'm sure Rednecks like the song Cotton Eye Joe. I used to love this song remember this song there was a time when Cotton Eye Joe and like the fucking hamster song Cotton Eye Joe was always my favorite song at like one of these types of events where these songs
Starting point is 01:51:18 would play and do you know Cotton Eye Joe? do you know the dance? I don't know the dance Matt's taking off the headphones And do you know Cotton Eye Joe? Do you know the dance? I don't know the dance. Would you like to see it? Yes. Okay, Matt, it's taking off the headphones. It goes like this. Matt, I've been for Cotton Eye Joe.
Starting point is 01:51:31 I've been married a long time ago. Where did it come from? Where did it go? Where did it come from? Cotton Eye Joe. Oh! So it's like, honestly, in my bones, like, in my body forever. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:51:43 But you saw, in watching me do the dance, you thought it was fun, right? It looked so fun. I was square dancing with the guys and girls. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love it. And it really gets everyone onto the floor. And also, it's like, it's better than the electric slide in Macarena because when you get it right, it feels like you actually challenge yourself via V-Dance. This is the thing, though, and this is part of why Macarenaita and Cha-Cha Slide, or the Electric Slide, took off.
Starting point is 01:52:08 It's because they're slow. Right. It's boom, boom, boom, boom. Cotton Eye Joe is... It's just that, like, the BPM is a little bit more engaging. A hundred percent. It gets your heart rate up. It actually predated berries
Starting point is 01:52:25 Cotton Eye Joe was the original berries And that's our little culture number 144 Cotton Eye Joe was the original berries Just even doing Cotton Eye Joe You get the same workout that you would at berries You just burned a thousand calories Shout out to Ian Shout out to Ian McAndrew
Starting point is 01:52:40 Okay number 222 Talk about another fast-paced song. Be My Lover, La Bouche. We did a performance of this when we hosted our show, The List, at the Public Hotel. That was a great performance. I wish we still had it.
Starting point is 01:52:57 I know. Where did it go? I don't know. We never filmed anything we did. I know. Except Pop Roulette. Except Pop Roulette. But this song, I mean, like,
Starting point is 01:53:06 and just a great, like, quintessential, like, this and, like, Show Me Love by Robin S., like, might be on the list. The quintessential, like, pop, huge pop house, 90s house moments. Brought it into the mainstream. And this song, just, like, the
Starting point is 01:53:20 vocal. The vocal. Hook it back on all the times we spent together. You wanna know by now if you wanna be my lover wanna be my lover. No matter that or now, boy, you gotta feel secure.
Starting point is 01:53:37 You know, what I love about this vocal is it's full-throated. Yes. They said, hey girl, you don't have to do all that. And she said, you don't know what I have to do. You don't know what I have to do. I'm La Bouche. La Bouche. The mouth. The mouth. Is that what that means? Yeah. What?
Starting point is 01:53:53 La boca. Oh my god. Yeah. Is that French? La Bouche? La Bouche is the mouth in French. Someone's opening a door. Oh my god! We have our first guest! We have our first guest! Come on, get in! Oh my god oh my god we have our first guest we have our first guest come on get in oh my god we have our first special

Starting point is 01:54:25 it was Be My Lover by LaBouche Be my lover Be my lover anything anything you want to say about this song
Starting point is 01:54:34 it's an and I want to say thank you for wearing the Las Colas just for my boys today I mean and every day but I was going
Starting point is 01:54:44 to get my little sweatshirt on to go to the gym, and I said, it has to be a less cultured dress. Oh, my God. So are you stopping here on your way to the gym? I'm stopping here on my way to the gym. So you're sort of endorphins before the endorphins. Exactly. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:54:57 We're so thrilled to see you. A shocking honor to be on the 300th episode. I mean, your family. Oh, your family. And you need a mimosa. You need a mimosa. You can't possibly because you're... I can't possibly because I'm going to go and bust my ass on the stairmaster.
Starting point is 01:55:12 Because tonight, I do believe and hope that we are all eating fajitas. Yes. We're having a little birthday dinner moment. And happy belated, Mama. Happy belated to me. Now, listen, I'm really excited that you are going to be here for this next one. Okay.
Starting point is 01:55:27 Because Bowen, by the way, I'm cutting this out, I see that 220 is also Frosty the Snowman. Oh shit. Okay. So what do you want to replace that with? It's going to be iconic because we're going to have gratitude. What is the song that should be on the top 300 that should be here? Throw it out. It should be Natalie Imbruglia. Lying naked on the top 300 that should be here? Throw it out. It should be Natalie Imbruglia.
Starting point is 01:55:46 Lying naked on the floor. We just did it. You know what else? It should be Liquid Dream. Liquid Dream. Liquid Dream by O-Town. Liquid Dream by O-Town. Okay, perfect.
Starting point is 01:55:57 All right, but that's not yet. Number 221 is Push It by Salt-N-Pepa. Iconic song. Now Push It by Salt-N-Pepa. Iconic song, now push it, et cetera. Ooh, baby, baby. Ooh, baby, baby. Get up on this. Probably the most, like, performed song in cinema, one might say. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 01:56:22 Very, not only do we get the song, we also get dance. Dance. And the thing is, this song, let's just put it out there on the table. It makes you want to fuck and get down and have sex. It's that beat, that ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:37 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:39 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:40 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:40 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:40 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:41 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:41 ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Starting point is 01:56:41 ... ... ... ... ... ... .................................... And effect. One, two, two, push it back. Move it about day and at night. Working up a sweat. Come on, girls.
Starting point is 01:56:46 What is the movie I'm thinking of where that is like the friendship thing between them? Is it Sweetest Thing? I don't know. But it's like their thing where they like meet up and they do it at like a sleepover night. Oh, my God. I'm seeing like. I think it's Sweetest Thing. Push it.
Starting point is 01:57:03 Push it movie scene. In a movie, friends. Push it in a movie. Something Borrowed? Something Borrowed. It's Something Borrowed. Wow. And for the film Something Borrowed to take real estate on our top 300 is absolutely perfect.
Starting point is 01:57:20 Perfect. Something Borrowed, one of those movies that had a good trailer and then was not good. Now, 220, we had a repeat of a prior song, so we did ask Greta to give us her contribution to this list. And I'm thrilled. I'm thrilled. It's the perfect answer. Number 220 is Liquid Dream, O-Town. Yes.
Starting point is 01:57:37 Ashley Parker Angel, everyone. Yeah. Remember him? They were all really attractive. Yeah. They were all really attractive. And not only did they offer liquid dream but also is it all or nothing at all let's talk about the lyrics of
Starting point is 01:57:53 liquid dream yes them painting the perfect woman she's got a body like jennifer right yeah i do about a girl who's a mix of Destiny's Child. There we go. With a little touch of Madonna's wild style. Wild style. With Janet Jackson's eyes. Throw in a body
Starting point is 01:58:13 like Jennifer. Yeah. You got the star of my liquid dream. Yes. Which is about coming. Yes. And like,
Starting point is 01:58:19 I knew that at the time. Also the line, she's a morph, a morphorotic dream from a magazine. Now this hot girl she's not your average girl. She's a morphorotic dream from a magazine.
Starting point is 01:58:34 And she's so fine. Designed to blow your mind. She's a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen. She's a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen. I did not know what the word dominatrix meant. Angelina Jolie's lips to kiss in the dark underneath Cindy C's beauty mark when it comes to the test. She's Tyra's the best.
Starting point is 01:58:56 And Selma Hayek brings the rest. These men are gay. These are gay men. These are gay men. Basically, Liquid Dreams has them standing. And they're gay men. Liquid Dream says them standing. And they're talking. The Liquid Dream is them having a martini with them. I better be hearing Liquid Dream
Starting point is 01:59:11 blasted in the clubs this prize. Honey! You will appreciate this. Both of you will. It's just unlocked a memory for me. The first time I went to Universal Studios Hollywood. The first time I was in la don't tell me they were playing it well no that album had just come out and that album that my sister bought
Starting point is 01:59:31 was in my disc man that entire time we were in los anderson i just we played i played that album start to finish over and over and over again was otown a Pearlman creation? No, they were making the band. We watched them come together. Yeah, we did. We really did. And they really were a group of horny looking guys. I wonder how much of them were gay. It was four, right? Four. I think it was four of them. Ashley Parker Angel, is he...
Starting point is 01:59:59 Well, he just looks gay. Am I making this up, but was Ashley Parker Angel in a relationship with Ashley Simpson? Oh my god. At one point in time? Spiritually, that feels right, but of course, Ashley Simpson iconically dated Ryan Cabrera. For sure. Who's not on the list. Ashley,
Starting point is 02:00:16 wait, oh my god, they had once, wait, okay, Ashley had a son named Lyric Lennon, born August 2005, and Lyric is an actor and appeared in American Horror Story Hotel. Well, you know how he came to be? Because Ashley Parker Angel
Starting point is 02:00:32 had a liquid reality into a woman. Oh my god. He basically probably was thinking of Into a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen. Dominatrix supermodel beauty queen got him all excited. Underneath Cindy C's beauty mark. And Salma Hayek brought the rest. Yep.
Starting point is 02:00:45 What does that mean? I would just like to say that Lou Pearlman did manage them. Oh, he did? Iconic. So he probably was like, you guys should sing about how you want to come.
Starting point is 02:00:54 And they were like, okay, Lou. Dark. So number 219. I Love You Always Forever by Donna Lewis. Yes. This is that song you hear in the doctor's office.
Starting point is 02:01:06 It's that song you hear on FM radio in the car when you're driving around as a kid. But it always gets you. Always. Say you'll love me forever. Never stop, never whatever. Near and far and always and everywhere and everything. I'll never forget. She really sang this from her beautiful soul.
Starting point is 02:01:24 Yeah. I'll never forget She really sang this From her beautiful soul Yeah She said You got The most unbelievable Blue eyes I've ever seen She made me say You could see the blue eyes
Starting point is 02:01:35 You know what I mean You could see the blue eyes This song Gives me A gorgeous Fall afternoon Yeah It's an autumnal romance
Starting point is 02:01:42 For me Or Yeah no Fall afternoon is good I was gonna say But it's not quite that It's like autumnal romance for me. Yeah, no, fall afternoon is good. I was going to say, but it's not quite that. It's like poolside in the spring, but maybe not that. But fall and spring speak to each other because they're not hot or too cold. You know what I mean? Absolutely.
Starting point is 02:01:55 They're mirrors. 218. It's like that mirror. Not on the list. No, definitely not. No, JT is on the list. Number 218. Hold on Wilson Phillips. Sort of living in the same time period. I really do appreciate it coming back in a big way
Starting point is 02:02:11 after Bridesmaids. Yeah, I was gonna say Bridesmaids. Gorgeous song. When you hold on for one more day. I mean, really, really, really just and you know what I love
Starting point is 02:02:23 about this song is they're saying I know this pain. Why do you lock yourself up in these chains? No one can live your life except for you. Don't ever let nobody step all over you. Open your heart and you'll find. Open your heart and your mind. Is it really fair to feel this way inside
Starting point is 02:02:45 someday somebody's gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye till then baby are you gonna let him hold it down and make you cry this is girl by destiny's child spiritual successor successor this is white girl white girl this is white. It's actually Roller Culture number 40. Hold On by Wilson Phillips is White Girl by Destiny's Child. Let's move on. And this song is very famous, but it's only a little bit better than Hold On and Liquid Dream.
Starting point is 02:03:17 Respect, a.k.a. R-E-S-P-E-C-T by Aretha Franklin. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. What's to say? Come on. She literally spelled it out. Aretha Franklin. The queen of soul. Aretha Franklin. The queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. I mean, there's not much... What's to say? Come on. She literally spelled it out.
Starting point is 02:03:29 Just a little bit. Mister! Just a little bit. Just a little bit. Hey! Remember when she went Respect. Just so you know, I was in my gospel choir in high school. And truly as a prank, they made me sing Respect in front of my entire high school my senior year. Oh my God. How did it go? Let's just say it was not what you want.
Starting point is 02:03:57 Okay? Because you're more jazz vocalist. You're not really a soul vocalist. What you want. But that was good. Baby, you got it. Baby, I got it. Baby, I got it. My God. Remember when Kelly Clarkson
Starting point is 02:04:07 was that iconic white girl who sang Respect on American Idol and then shot into the hearts of millions? Yeah. You think that was the moment? Yes. Yeah. Respect. She slayed that. She slayed that. Alright. 216. A song that's better than Respect. Just a little bit better than R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Bring back
Starting point is 02:04:23 my girls, upaul so at the there comes a time in every episode of rupaul's drag race where rupaul has to bring back her girls to get critiqued and to find that it's going to be eliminated and so naturally this was an opportunity for her to make a song yes hence we have bring back now what's the famous lyric in the first in the first verse she's going back to the workroom. Starting point is 02:07:09 Pedophiles were everywhere when this song came out. And now you had kids listening to the song. Anytime some Q bitch is like, that person's a pedophile, I go, no, that was the 80s. Yeah, that was the 80s. It was a different time. Pedophiles don't exist anymore. No, they're gone. Starting point is 02:13:03 and the desperate part got me in a lot of trouble. I was the kid that if you asked what happened, I immediately started with everything but me. It took years for me to break that, like years of work.
